This month we are bringing back something from the past and introducing something new to the pages of Siesta Sand. First, we’ll share the new idea that we are introducing in this issue. Being an artist community, we wanted WR Ă€QG D XQLTXH ZD\ WR VKRZFDVH GLIIHUHQW views of our island through the eyes of an artist. |Whales to left, whales to right By Paul Roat... We may learn more about whale strandings than we want to here in Florida. Responding to a public outcry of a Naval sonar testing range off North Carolina by whale enthusiasts a few years ago, the military advocated establishing the tests in the Atlantic Ocean off Jacksonville. Of particular concern with the Florida location is the proximity of the range to established calving grounds of right whales. Right whales are the most endangered species of big marine mammals, with less than 400 estimated to be swimming in the world’s oceans. Right whales, by the way, got the name because they were the “right” whale to harpoon by New Englanders because the high oil/fat content of the mammals caused WKHP WR ÁRDW WR WKH VXUIDFH DIWHU WKH\ GLHG Female right whales migrate south to waters off Florida and Georgia to give birth in the fall. The proposed testing area would encompass 625 square miles and have hundreds of microphones placed on WKH VHD ÁRRU WR UHFRUG WKH WUDLQLQJ H[HUFLVHV DV VXEPDULQHV ÁRRG WKH DUHD ZLWK VRQDU waves. The range would cost about $100 million and be used about 480 times a year in one- to six-hour durations. Before any Naval underwater sonic booms take place off Florida, a bevy of

permissions must be granted, including the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The studies are expected to go on for a while. Whales have the most acute hearing of any mammal. Some species, like humpbacks, can communicate across thousands of miles. Imagine a creature that can hear that well being subjected to a barrage of really, really loud noise 480 times a year next to a nursery. Comforting, isn’t it?

… and even closer yet

Best opening sentence in any novel is from Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick or the Whale.”

Here it comes: “Call me Ishmael.”

Sperm whales bring to mind huge white creatures ramming sailing ships in an effort to kill guys named Ahab in the 6RXWK 3DFLÀF RU WKH 1RUWK $WODQWLF Call me Pyseter catodon. But one of the most popular areas for New England whalers back around the

late 1800s was the Gulf of Mexico, at least until the whale population was driven to the brink of extinction. Among the whales found were sperm whales. Sperm whales are toothed marine mammals that feed on giant squid and other deep-sea critters. They grow up to 60 feet in length and can dive down to 3,000 feet, staying underwater for up to an hour. When they surface, they exhale and inhale in great bursts up to 70 times before diving again. They aren’t the fast swimmers like their smaller relatives, dolphins, but cruise at about 15 mph and can shoot up to 40 mph when disturbed. Sperm whales make clicking noises for HFKRORFDWLRQ ³ ÀQGLQJ RXW ZKDW·V DURXQG them — and also “make a variety of other sounds including groans, whistles, chirps, pings, squeaks, yelps and wheezes,” according to researchers. The sound can travel for miles. Just where and how many sperm whales are found in the Gulf of Mexico isn’t certain. Studies have only been taken for the past 20 or so years, but based on occasional sightings and strandings, it is believed they mostly inhabit the northern and central Gulf. Researchers believe there are about 1,350 sperm whales in the Gulf. Most sightings run on a line from southern Texas to northwest Florida, and from south Texas to south of Key West. It is estimated that the worldwide population of sperm whales numbers 1.5 million. A sperm whale stranded itself on the beaches of northern Anna Maria Island in 1974, eventually dieing despite efforts to turn the 48-foot-long creature to deeper waters. Cause of death was not determined. There have been only 39 strandings of sperm whales recorded in Texas, Louisiana, and Florida.

It is also believed, based on DNA tests, that sperm whales in the Gulf are a “distinct stock” from other sperm whales. It is also believed that there is a resident population of females and juveniles in the Gulf, with roaming males coming to pay occasional visits. There have been studies conducted to determine impacts of shipping activity as well as gas and oil exploration in the northern and eastern Gulf on whales, ZLWK QR FRQFOXVLYH ÀQGLQJV \HW UHDFKHG A sperm whale investigating an oil rig was captured on a pretty incredible video, though, at a depth of about 3,000 feet. Sperm whales are described as being “highly gregarious and polygamous.” They are found in groups of up to 100, although pods of 30 are most common, and are generally clustered according to age and sex. Older males are solitary except during breeding time. Sperm whales live up to 70 years. Females mature at age 10; males don’t mate until age 26. Females calve every 2 to 5 years. It’s pretty amazing the things that lie under the calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, isn’t it?

Factoid

The sperm whale has the largest of mammalian brains, both in proportion to its body and in sheer mass. It also has the largest gullet of all cetaceans, large enough to swallow a human. Males can be aggressive when disturbed and caused serious disruption to whalers in their small wooden skiffs during hunts in the 1800s. Although generally dark in color, older male sperm whales lighten at they age. Perhaps the tale of Moby Dick wasn’t that farfetched after all.

([HFXWLYH 2IĂ€FHU 6LHVWD Key Association siestakeyassociation.com During the winter months and especially at spring break, Siesta Key is buzzing with activity and this year it has been even more so since Siesta Beach was honored with the #1 rating out of the top 10 beaches in the USA by Dr. Stephen Leatherman, well known as Dr. Beach. Last month, the Siesta Key Association (SKA) was proud to introduce renowned coastal research expert and author, Dr. Leatherman, at its annual SKA member breakfast. Well over 140 SKA members who attended the breakfast meeting also enjoyed a presentation by Sarasota County Commissioner, Nora Patterson, and an engaging historical discourse on Siesta Key by John McCarthy, the county’s Community Services Director. How are we all so fortunate to enjoy Siesta’s top beach ranking in all of the US, moving up from #2 in both 2009 and 2010, to a prestigious #1 in 2011? Among the 50 beach criteria that Dr. Beach follows annually to rate America’s top beaches, he highlights Siesta’s clear water and sand TXDOLW\ JHQHURXV EHDFK IDFLOLWLHV QRQ VPRNLQJ policy, and its cleanliness and environmental consciousness. Interestingly, to help keep Siesta Beach pristine and attractive, trash receptacles are located only at the beach access areas, not on the beach itself. Many thanks to all who help keep the beach clean by bringing back their trash, and others’ trash, too, to dispose of upon leaving the beach. Did you know that removing the trash bins from the expansive sandy beach areas can actually contribute toward a cleaner and environmentally protected beach? According to some local beach conservationists, the relocation of trash cans to the beach access points not only encourages beachgoers to take out what they brought in leaving less behind on the sand. In addition, scavenging wildlife like crows are deterred from spreading trash further, and their predatory access to other protected wildlife such as our nesting Snowy Plovers may be prevented. Siesta Key Round-Up

Dr.Beach honored by Siesta Key Association

Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach, director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research, was one of the guest speakers at Siesta Key Association’s annual breakfast meeting last month. Before his speech, Catherine Luckner, Siesta Key Association’s board president, presented him with a framed print of a snowy plover chick, by well-known photographer Ted Mase along with a plaque in appreciation for his contribution in protecting the environment and endangered species. Per Luckner, the snowy plover chick on Siesta Beach was chosen because its presence is evidence of a healthy beach environment.

No. 1 beach sign MIA

Visitors wishing to pose in front of the No. 1 beach sign located near the concession stands at Siesta Public Beach were confronted with a strange site. The beautiful brightly colored sign that proclaimed Siesta as the #1 Beach in the USA was missing. In its place was a temporary county sign providing daily water temperatures and hand-printed, in chalk the words, “#1 IN USA ON BEACH”. According to Jonathan Poyner, Beach Events Coordinator the No.1 beach sign was stolen the third week in March and a new sign is expected to be in place by the end of March or beginning of April.

Beach road erosion

Although deterioration is evident on the north end of Beach Road, no plans are currently in the works to address the problem. Per Thai Tran, mobility program manager for Sarasota County, repairs to the road remains a No. 2 priority unfunded mobility project. He did not have an estimate for the cost of repairs but expects the issue to be discussed in future meetings. Sarasota County executive director of public works, James Harriott Jr., discussed the problem at the Sarasota County Commission meeting on March 14, and acknowledged that each heavy storm further erodes the road. However, the lack of funding currently ently prevents any repairs to the road.

Siesta Key water main break

Sarasota County lifted a precautionary boil water advisory for residents impacted by a broken water main in the area of Seaside Drive off Midnight Pass Road on Siesta Key. The spontaneous break occurred on Thursday, March 22 resulting in limited service to approximately 700 Sarasota County Utilities customers. The break was repaired on Saturday, March 24 but precautionary boil water advisory was issued for anyone whose water service was disrupted. That advisory was lifted March 25. Bacteriological testing showed water to be safe to drink.

Sewer project scheduled

A sewer force-main line project on the north end of Siesta Key is scheduled to begin April 1 and expected to be completed before bridge renovations begin June 5. Although FDOT engineering manager, Albert Rosenstein voiced concerns about the timing of the project during a Jan 5 Siesta Key Association presentation, Glenn Marzluf, general manager of the city of Sarasota’s Utilities Division LV FRQÀGHQW HYHU\WKLQJ ZLOO EH FRPSOHWHG RQ VFKHGXOH

Sarasota County celebrates Siesta Beach Day

Last month Sarasota County and the Baltimore Orioles celebrated Siesta Beach Day at B Ed Smith Stadium. In recognition of Siesta Beach E b being designated the No.1 beach in the USA, Parks aand Recreation staff handed out limited edition ssunglasses, T-shirts and beach towels. To add to tthe celebration, summertime music was played between innings.

Bluegrass on Siesta

Turtle Beach was shaking last month as Benny Kimsey hosted his annual fundraiser; Bluegrass Picnic on Turtle Beach. Skeeterland Bluegrass Band, Tonga Street Bluegrass Band, Sycamore Shade and Siesta key Boys were all on hand to help spread the bluegrass gospel on Siesta Key and raise funds. By all accounts everyone had a great time and according to Mr. Kimsey, “We raised by far the most dollar amount of donations that we ever have by almost three times. It was quite a substantial amount and just shows what a great community we live in and what great people volunteers, musicians, publications, etc. that help with this event.” Red Cross volunteers were on hand to accept the donations, from the crowd of approximately 350, for the th hurricane relief fund. The event was free and everyone enjoyed burgers and hot dogs with sides,’ compliments of Mr. Kimsey.

Last month Sarasota County Commissioners met with family members of Donna Chen, who was struck and killed January 7 by an allegedly drunken driver, along with former commissioner David Mills to listen to their request to ban alcoholic beverages on the beaches. Why I Love living In Sarasota After visiting Sarasota for more than 10 years, my husband, our 3 young daughters and I moved to Sarasota from Long Island 16 years ago. Interestingly enough, we moved here with the mind frame that “if we don’t love it here, maybe we’ll move to Dallasâ€?. Needless to say, we’re still very happily living in Sarasota! We’ve found it a great place to raise children, work, play, relax and entertain ourselves and all the guests who’ve visited us. When we arrived, our girls were 4 months, 4 years and 6 years old. Coming from NY, we were a little nervous about the quality of education in Florida and the ability to raise young children here. However, when we did a little research and asked a lot of questions, we found there was little need for concern. :H PDQDJHG WR Ă€QG D ZRQGHUIXO EDE\VLWWHU (thank you Miss Ilene!), and great preschool and elementary schools. The older 2 girls have since graduated from the local public school system and are currently attending public Universities here in Florida. The youngest is a sophomore in high school, and we believe that the educational system here in Sarasota is excellent. I also have to say we love the opportunities available here that helped us to round out there childhoods. While growing up, some of the activities outside school they were/are involved in include dance, gymnastics, soccer, softball, crew, youth orchestra and a variety of summer camps that exposed them to music, sports, art and drama. Sarasota has helped them develop into the beautiful young ladies they’re becoming. We arrived here 16 years ago unemployed, and have found that Sarasota is a great place to

We frequently engage in conversations about Nunley’s Carousel in Baldwin, NY, reminiscing with customers about our previous business at the amusement park so many of our snowbirds grew up with. We’ve also formed some great relationships through the Siesta Key Village Association, Siesta Key Chamber of C Commerce, Sarasota Originals and the Sarasota C Convention and Visitors Bureau. Through these o organizations over the years, we’ve enjoyed aactive participation with 4 large annual events o on Siesta Key: the Easter Egg Hunt, Fourth of JJuly Fireworks, Sandfest – Celebration of our W White Sands, and Light up the Village (Santa’s aarrival to Siesta Key). our world-class Asolo Repertory Theatre. Today this theatre is a jewel in Sarasota’s crown, and has delighted decades of audiences. The back story of the Asolo Rep is fascinating and not often told. I take this opportunity to share it with you: In 1960, the faculty of Florida State Unive University started a summer acting comp company in Sarasota, where plays were perfo performed in the Ringling Museum’s Histo Historic Asolo Theater. It was an impo important moment in my life, for it was KRZ KRZ , ÀUVW OHDUQHG RI WKH IDEXORXV OLWWOH circu circus town known as Sarasota. At the time time, my husband Frank was on staff as a television director at FSU, and Dick Fallon—who was the head of the FSU theater department--brought him alo along to see what was going on. Frank ret returned to Tallahassee completely sm smitten by Sarasota, and a year later we had moved here. The early productions at the Asolo Th Theatre were period pieces, plays such as Tartuffe by Moliere (written in 1664) an and The Beggar’s Opera by John Gay (written in 1728,) which wickedly satirized Italian Opera. The small Asolo Theatre was the perfect setting for these period pieces, for the building itself was almost two centuries old. Built in 1798, it had been dismantled and put into storage in 1930,

then crated and shipped to the Ringling Museum in 1949. In the late 50’s, it was reconstructed so that modern productions could be staged there. Under the auspices of FSU, it soon emerged as the home of the Asolo Theatre Festival. In 1965, the Asolo Theatre Festival EHFDPH WKH ÀUVW 6WDWH 7KHDWUH RI )ORULGD One year later it expanded its season to become a year-round professional theatre. In 1968, FSU began sending acting students to Sarasota to intern with the company. In 1973, FSU’s MFA-in-Acting program came to Sarasota, and the Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training was born. In 1989, the company outgrew the Historic Asolo at the Ringling, dedicated a new building, and named it the Asolo Center for the Performing Arts. The Dunferline Opera House was purchased from Scotland and reconstructed inside the Center, becoming the Mertz Theatree in honor of its benefactors, Harold E.. and Esther M. Mertz. The Asolo Rep now had a brand new main stage. In 1994 the Jane B. Cook Theatre opened and became the main performance stage for the

Conservatory as well as the second stage for the Asolo Theatre Company. In 2006, the Asolo Theatre Company was renamed the Asolo Repertory Theatre. After a series of spectacular world premiers and brilliantly executed classics, Asolo Rep was awarded WEDU’s prestigious Arts & Culture Award in 2012. The award was given for the theatre’s contribution to the spirit of adventure and exploration through education in the arts, and also for bringing rich and engaging experiences to a wide range of audiences. Beginning with Moliere’s Tartuffe to the recent productions of The Life of Galileo and Bonnie and Clyde, the Asolo Repertory Theatre has provided Sarasota an exciting theatrical ride. During this evolution, it has been hugely supported by such glorious galas as the 2012 extravaganza, RAGTIME REVISITED.

Pending sales in the Sarasota real estate market hit an 11-month high in February 2012, demonstrating once more the health of the local industry as the buying season heats up. Median sale prices were also up substantially for single family homes and condos in February 2012 compared to this time last year – another positive sign for a successful home buying season. “I have heard nothing but positive reports from our members about the seasonal surge in our real estate market,â€? said SAR President Laura Benson. “Sales are up, prices are stable and much higher than last year at this time, and we are seeing multiple offers on many transactions. Pending sales are off the charts – we hit an 11-month high of 1,130 in February. This is all very encouraging news.â€? The January 2012 holiday sales lull didn’t last long. The 177 condo sales in February represented the highest level in the last eight months. If pending sales, which represent properties going under contract, produce the expected level of closed sales, we could see a major selling month in March 2012. That could repeat what we saw in March 2011, when sales hit the highest total since 2005. Overall, February 2012 saw a 15 percent increase in property sales over January 2012, and a 17 percent increase in pending sales IURP WKH SUHYLRXV PRQWK ERWK UHDIĂ€UPLQJ numerous verbal reports of a very busy spring

selling season in Sarasota. Closed sales stood at 414 for single family homes and 177 for condos, lower than in February 2011, but higher than last month. In February 2011, 471 single family homes and 201 condos were sold. The single family home median price climbed to $167,500 in February 2012 from ODVW PRQWK¡V Ă€JXUH RI )RU FRQGRV WKH Ă€JXUH IHOO WR IURP WKH -DQXDU\ OHYHO of $180,000. Last February, both single family homes and condos were selling at the median price of $137,500, so both of the current numbers reflect a stronger market than a year ago. Single family home prices were a whopping 21.8 percent higher than in February 2011. Condo prices were 9 percent higher than last February. The inventory for February stood at 4,588, down almost 5 percent from January’s 4,711, and 20 percent lower than last February’s total of 5,864. With fewer available properties, the law of supply and demand indicates asking prices could be climbing higher in the coming months. The inventory hit a 10-year low of 4,408 in August 2011, and has remained at or close to this low level since then. As the inventory has slid, the months of inventory has also dropped. 7KH Ă€JXUH QRZ VWDQGV DW PRQWKV IRU VLQJOH family homes, compared to 8.3 last month and PRQWKV LQ )HEUXDU\ 7KH Ă€JXUH ZDV months for condos, compared to 11.3 months

Distressed property sales continued to represent a higher percentage than normal in the local market in February 2012, with 37.4 percent of all sales from bank-owned IRUHFORVXUHV DQG VKRUW VDOHV %XW WKH Ă€JXUH was a drop from the 40 percent total in January 2012, and far below the record high of over 50 percent in the second quarter of 2010. Currently, only 740 properties for sale in the MLS are distressed listings (short sales and foreclosures), or roughly 15 percent of the market. Last month at this time, the number was 812 out of 4,711 homes and condos on the market, or about 17 percent. If this percentage continues to trend lower, we could begin to see median sales price increases going forward. “The lower number of distressed property sales, and the decreased number of foreclosures and short sales available will likely mean greater competition and higher asking prices,â€? noted Benson. “We are all hoping for a return to historic levels of distressed properties, which would be less than 5 percent of the market. But until that day, our members will continue to educate themselves on the existing market and help customers make sensible decisions.â€?

|How Can Chiropractic Care Help You? Who do you know that is Subluxated and lives in the United States? Who do you know that needs a healthy immune system or that have children that are always sick? Your immune system is controlled by the brain, either indirectly through hormones in the bloodstream, or directly through the nerves and neurochemicals. One of the most widely accepted explanations of cancer, the “surveillance” theory, states that cancer cells are developing in our bodies all the time but are normally destroyed by white blood cells before they can develop into dangerous tumors. Cancer appears when the immune system becomes suppressed and can no longer deal with this routine threat. It follows that whatever upsets the brain’s control of the immune system will foster malignancy. Most certainly chiropractic science should be given due credit for being on the right track. Chiropractic has been helping people with musculoskeletal pain for over 110 years. Medical studies have shown that chiropractic can be effective at treating back pain, sciatica, neck pain, dizziness, and even high blood pressure. Chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to “suit” the outside environment. While nutrition, detox, max-mind, and healthy relationships are important, these things are secondary to a chiropractic adjustment that restores health within the body by removing nerve interference and allowing the body to heal. If you suffer from back pain, neck pain, headache, sciatica or have been in an auto collision, chiropractic care can get you back on the road to health. Swamp Donkie Florida’s newest sensation, Swamp Donkie is comprised of international recording artist JOHN WHITELEATHER and South Carolina’s own MARY BETH PONDER. In the short time they’ve been together, they’ve created quite a buzz amongst a growing audience and venues alike. Delivering a raw, energetic, and at times, humorous approach to music; Swamp Donkie’s spontaneity keeps folks coming back knowing that each performance will be a fresh and unique experience.

Q: What was the strangest or funniest thing you experienced at work? A: One night a co-worker’s boyfriend came into the bar. He was super drunk and decided to dance on the bar. This was a small pub with low ceilings and he had to bend down while dancing. After about 2 minutes he started trying to spin around and fell, right behind the bar at my feet. He just missed the sink and the wine rack by about an inch. He just laid there laughing for at least 5 minutes. We all just looked at him cracking up. It was hilarious. Q: What do you do in your spare time? A: If I have any spare time I do booking and promotions for bands. I also have been spending quite a bit of time at the gym lately. I like to hang out in the sun and read and just relax with friends. Q: How would you describe yourself? A: I’m a pretty easy going girl with a good/odd sense of humor. Sarcasm is my best friend. Q: How would you describe Siesta Key Oyster Bar (SKOB)? A: SKOB is a great place to work and hang-out; most of us do even on our days off. The atmosphere is wonderful and the owners are amazing. SKOB is just a laid-back island bar with a good group of locals and tourists that hang out. We get repeat guests every year from super far away. SKOB is always energetic and fun. You never know what will happen from day to day. Q: When’s the best time to see you? A: I work at the back bar every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Come visit!!!

Yellow-crowned Night-heron (Nyctanassa violacea) Other names: crab-eater, crabier, gauldin ‡ Status: FL=stable, IUCN=LC ‡ Length: 22-28 in. (56-71 cm) ‡ Weight: 1.6 lb (.72 kg) ‡ :LQJVSDQ LQ FP

‡ Life span: Up to 6 years ‡ Nests: throughout SW Florida ‡ Found: All six counties, coastal, near coast, mainland ‡ Months found: JFmamjJASOND (lower case indicates nesting season)

CharlesSobczak livingsanibel@gmail.com

Found only in North and South America, the yellow-crowned night-heron is virtually identical in size to its close relative, the black-crowned night-heron, but has less than one-third the life span. The easiest way to tell the two birds apart part is by the large, yellowish tuft of feathers on the yellow-crowned heron, ron, making it appear to have a punk-style tyle haircut. Its wings are also much more ngs variegated than the solid gray wings of the black-crowned heron. The yellow-crowned heron tends nds to feed more often during daylight ght hours and does not have as diverse rse a diet as its cousin. As its nicknames mes imply, the yellow-crowned nighththeron specializes in eating crabs. A curious habit of this bird is that it carefully

removes all the legs on a captured crab before eating. It is monogamous and tends to nest in small colonies of other yellow-crowned night-herons. Snakes and other birds prey on its eggs, and alligators and bobcats take the adult bird. Its population is stable, but it suffers from habitat loss resulting from the drainage of wetlands and coastal development. p
