Turtles Restaurant is located at the south end of Siesta Key on Little Sarasota Bay. It has been around since 1986, and customers enjoy great views of the water from anywhere inside the restaurant or outside on the deck.

The General Manager at Turtles is a delightful guy by the name of Alex Ortega. His road to success is a fascinating one, for he has truly lived the American Dream.

Alex Ortega was born near Aguascalientes LQ &HQWUDO 0H[LFR WKH ÀIWK LQ D OLQH RI VHYHQ children. He grew up on a small ranch complete with horses, chickens, a housewife mom, and a father who was a teacher.

When he was eight, his father passed away, leaving a wife who had never worked to support the family.

In addition to taking care of her offspring, Alex’s mom was given a job by the school board to help support the family. All seven children saw how hard their mother was working, and were inspired to do all that they could to help.

|Sarasota duo goes to the sea for speed

Steve and Stephen Kildahl are father and son in search of another world championship in one of the most grueling and dangerous sports known to man – offshore powerboat racing.

Steve has won three world championships, three national championships and two Florida championships. Stephen – who just turned 21 – has one world championship, one national and two Florida championships. Now they’ve begun the hunt again in a new boat.

“We used to terrorize Sarasota Bay when I was a kid,â€? said Steve Kildahl, the elder of the duo. And when organized racing came to Sarasota with a grand prix in 1985, Steve was there as an independent, long before Stephen was born. ´,Q D PDMRU Ă€UH PRVWO\ GHVWUR\HG RXU marina on Phillippi Creek,â€? said Steve. “Gene Whipp asked me to race a 22-foot Velocity since our boat was destroyed.â€?

Whipp was the operator of Gulf Wind Marina, and founder of the Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix. The race has raised more than $14 million since 1985 to build and maintain facilities for children with special needs in Sarasota County.

The race is now known as the Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix Festival, but has always taken place over the July 4 weekend.

It’s a huge moneymaker not only for the Suncoast Charities for Children, but is a big tourist draw. A study by the Sarasota County Sports Commission indicated the event had an economic impact of $12.7 million in 2011.

In the mid-1990s, Steve won a world championship aboard a 26-foot Velocity, and also set a world speed record with a 24IRRW 0DOVWURP ´&RPSHWLWLRQ ZDV Ă€HUFH Âľ Steve recalled. “There was not always a class dominator. We had Wellcraft Scarabs, Donzi was just coming into racing, the Velocities of course.â€?

The Snowy Plover, with banding registered by Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), was born in St. Joseph’s Peninsula in the Florida Panhandle. St.Joseph’s Peninsula State Park was rated #1 by Dr. Beach in 2002. After dogs were allowed on the beach, it was feared the bird was frightened off or had died. Everyone was thrilled that the bird found its way to the #1 beach in America, Siesta Beach.

In May, Mother’s Day is always a special celebration each year, and the month brought the ascent of the “Super moon�, which appeared larger in the night sky and was a third brighter than usual due to its close orbital proximity to the earth. This May to October, local beach visitors may be quite moonstruck to witness another one of Mother Nature’s fascinating phenomena.

to share her knowledge of some very special visitors to our coastal community, many of them UHWXUQLQJ WR 6DUDVRWD IRU WKH ÀUVW WLPH LQ DERXW thirty years! They are the sea turtles who have returned to our beaches to lay their eggs. On May 1st, right on schedule, two sea turtle nests were discovered on Siesta Key beaches. Tommy Vaughn-Birch, who is a long-time volunteer and instructor for the Sea Turtle Conservation & Research Program (STCRP) of renowned Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, provided a captivating educational presentation on the annual sea turtle nesting season.

Sarasota hosts the largest sea turtle population on Florida’s west coast. Sea turtles are differentiated from land turtles by their à LSSHUV DQG WKH IDFW WKDW WKH\ FDQQRW UHWUDFW their heads. By early May, there were already over twice the number of Loggerhead turtle nests on Siesta Key as the same time last year.

/RJJHUKHDGV RQH RI ÀYH W\SHV RI VHD WXUWOHV on the Gulf Coast, can weigh 250 pounds at maturity - about 30 years old. Under the moonlight, a female Loggerhead returns to the same beaches where she’d hatched, then digs out a nesting area into which she drops over one-hundred eggs that look like ping-pong balls. After laying eggs every two weeks, she leaves behind four to seven nests during a season and returns to the sea for a few years.

Crawl tracks, which can look similar to a single tire track, can be found heading from and then back to the water. Nighttime beachgoers who happen upon nesting sea turtles should watch TXLHWO\ LQ WKH GDUNQHVV QR à DVK SLFWXUHV SOHDVH From 30 years of monitoring by Mote’s Sea Turtle Patrol volunteers, about 1.5 million hatchlings were recorded along 35 miles of beaches from Long Boat Key to Venice. Starting this July after a two-month incubation, expect

several thousand happy birthdays for the hatchlings that will start their moonlit crawl to the sea. For every two thousand hatchlings with about half being female, only one female will make it back to Siesta Key thirty years from now, by around 2042! Amazing that this season’s turtles had been born around 1982. Interestingly, temperature determines the turtles’ gender. Tommy added that cooler temperatures produce males, and hotter temps produce females‌thus their nicknames “cool daddiesâ€? and “hot mamasâ€?. Instinctively, the newly born turtles head toward the brightest OLJKW DQG KRSHIXOO\ LW LV PRRQOLJKW QRW DUWLĂ€FLDO light- to swim out to sea and nourishment.

Unfortunately, many a mother turtle and their hatchlings will become disoriented by the light glow from shorefront condos, homes, and businesses.

Siesta Key Round-Up Two long time businesses leave Siesta Key

Total Tennis and Anna’s Deli, both located on Avenida Madera in the village, made the decision to relocate their business to off island sites. (The remaining Anna’s Deli located on the south end of Siesta Key in the Southbridge Mall will remain). With limited parking in the village, some wonder what type of business will be able to occupy the vacated premises.

Currently, due to parking restrictions, one parking space is required for every 50 square feet for a restaurant vs. one parking space for every 250 square feet for a retail business. Sarasota &RXQW\ ]RQLQJ DQG SHUPLWWLQJ FXUUHQWO\ KDV QR DSSOLFDWLRQV IRU SHUPLWWLQJ RU FHUWLĂ€FDWH RI occupancy on either location thus far. SolĂłrzano Bros. Pizza and Sun Garden CafĂŠ are the two remaining businesses down this short corridor.

Daiquiri Deck expands to Venice

From its early beginnings in 1993, when the restaurant made its debut in the Village, Daiquiri Deck has been serving both residents and visitors on the Key. Its ever-expanding menu includes D GR]HQ GLIIHUHQW GDLTXLULV DQG ÀYH W\SHV RI R\VWHUV ZKLFK KDYH NHSW SDWURQV FRPLQJ EDFN IRU more. Co-owners Russell Matthes, Matt Grover, and Troy Syprett contribute their success to the knowledge they’ve gained over the years in identifying the taste preferences and expectations of their customers. They opened their second location in St. Armands Circle on Lido Key on February 22, 2011 and are set to open their new restaurant in Venice this fall.

County commission votes to approve variance for water main replacement project

On May 23rd, Sarasota county commission voted unanimously to approve a variance for the water main pipeline replacement project between Siesta Key and Casey Key. Of concern was the question whether the pipeline would pose any problems for future initiatives to re-open Midnight Pass. County staff assured everyone present that replacement of the water main pipeline would not interfere with future initiatives. Howard Berna, environmental supervisor in the county’s Conservation and Natural Resources Department noted that the pipeline would be placed between 30-35 feet below the existing grade and that dredging for pass openings, in the past, had taken place at levels much shallower than that.

8th Annual FIT Triathlon Asian Restaurant to leave the Key

Another business has set its sights on an off island location. A Taste of Asia, one of two Asian restaurants located in the Village is relocating to its new place on Tamiami Trail. The Lum family is currently in negotiations with three business owners offering to pick up their remaining lease. No date set yet on when the move will take place, but you’ll still be able to enjoy the same great quality. You’ll just have to travel a bit further.

New businesses open in the Village

Two new businesses opened their doors in the Village these past months. Back in April, Village Eats opened its window. It’s located right next door to the Lobster Pot. The small donut stand serves made-to-order mini donuts sprinkled with either cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar. The other new business in the Village, Bonjour French CafÊ, opened their doors in May. Among their offerings are crepes, salads, croissants and espresso.

North bridge constructions to start June 5, 2012

40th Annual Amateur Sand Sculpting Contest Property owners in violation of conservation easement

According to a conservation easement approved in April 2011 by the Sarasota County Commission for two area lots located on Beach Road, the property owners may have unknowingly violated the terms by having the lots raked and groomed by, what appeared to be, mechanical means. The conservation easement was put in place to help protect the known nesting sites for the endangered snowy plovers. The natural debris such as seaweed and shells are needed for the survival of this delicate species thereby prohibiting the use of mechanical instruments to rake and groom the area in question.

Lighting for Siesta Key Village crosswalks still in Limbo

Back in January, the Siesta Key Village Association discussed a proposal to purchase better crosswalk lighting for the seven crosswalks located throughout the Village. As of May 24th little progress has been made to secure any type of lighting option. According to Ryan Montague, with the FRXQW\¡V 0RELOLW\ 7UDIÀF 2IÀFH WKH\ KDYH FRQWDFWHG IRXU OLJKWLQJ YHQGRUV requesting demonstrations to determine the effectiveness of each product, but only one vendor has responded to their request thus far. He is hopeful that by the end of June they will have the three demonstrations needed to help them prepare a request for a proposal or quote. In the meantime, talks continue on the cost and the county’s best use of the limited taxpayer’s dollar.

Sarasota Up & Down the Trail

Longboat Police Chief and former Sarasota Mayor Killed Al Hogle died after a motorcycle crash in the Blue Ridge Mountains on May 14. Hogle was police chief of Longboat Key, former chief of the Bradenton Police Department, and retired as a captain from the Sarasota Police Department.

Hogle was an active motorcyclist, and would often put his Ducati on a trailer and drive to North Carolina with friends to cruise the back roads. He was motorcycling with three friends when the Ducati went down at low speed in a corner. Hogle struck an obstacle and was killed. ,Q WKH V DQG V +RJOH ZRUNHG DV DQ XQGHUFRYHU QDUFRWLFV RIĂ€FHU LQ 6DUDVRWD +H RQFH quipped, “I bet you’ve never talked to somebody who’s bought pounds of cocaine.â€? $IWHU UHWLULQJ IURP WKH 63' +RJOH ZDV DSSRLQWHG WR Ă€OO D YDFDQF\ RQ WKH 6DUDVRWD &LW\ Commission, and later won the seat outright. He served a term as mayor before quitting to become the Bradenton Police chief.

Hogle was born in Gulfport, Miss, and is a 1966 graduate of Sarasota High School. After graduation, he served a hitch in the U.S. Air Force before joining the Sarasota Police Department in 1970.

Charter Board examines by-elections, signature sunsets and more The Sarasota County Charter Review Board moved ahead a proposal to eliminate special elections for citizen-petition proposed changes to the county’s home-rule charter.

The charter today says once the required signatures are validated, the county has 60 days to hold an election on the question. County Assistant Attorney Kathleen Schneider said it takes the elections supervisor at least 8 weeks to prepare a ballot, with the special election costing $500,000.

To get the question on the November ballot, the charter board moved up the required public hearing to June 6 at 7pm. The hearing will be held at the county administration building on 5LQJOLQJ %RXOHYDUG DFURVV WKH VWUHHW IURP WKH PDLQ SRVW RIĂ€FH The charter board meets infrequently. At the next regular meeting in October, it will consider a three-year maximum on petition signature validity, and the expansion of the county commission WR VHYHQ PHPEHUV XS IURP Ă€YH ZLWK HDFK UHSUHVHQWLQJ D VLQJOH PHPEHU GLVWULFW Three city commissioners hint at tax increase If you’re counting votes, it looks like there are at least three for a City of Sarasota tax increase this fall. Speaking before the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce’s Government Issues Group, Commissioners Paul Caragiulo and Shannon Snyder telegraphed the coming hike. “If we start raising taxes, which we’re going to eventually do, there will be a taxpayer revolt,â€?

said Snyder. “And most of our voters live in the high-rent district.� Caragiulo followed up Snyder’s comment by saying, “You’ve got to be willing to fall on your sword over this.�

Later that day Suzanne Atwell was re-elected mayor of Sarasota. She said during her “State of the Cityâ€? address, “We need a balanced approach to balance the budget. A combination of VSHQGLQJ UHGXFWLRQV HYDOXDWLQJ DGGLWLRQDO PRGLĂ€FDWLRQV WR WKH SHQVLRQ SURJUDPV XWLOL]LQJ revenue stabilization funds, as well as a millage increase.â€?

Caragiulo showed chamber representatives a chart indicating Sarasota has the third-lowest property tax rate for the 50 most populous cities. And when the county’s millage rate is added, the combined levy for the city is the lowest in the state.

Thaxton knocked from county commission race The Florida Supreme court ruled May 10 in favor of term limits approved by voters in charter counties. County Commissioner Jon Thaxton was planning on running for his fourth term.

County voters in 1998 approved a two-term limit as part of an amendment to the county’s charter. However a circuit court judge struck down the election. A Broward County case on WHUP OLPLWV ZDV VHQW WR WKH )ORULGD 6XSUHPHV ODVW \HDU DQG D 6DUDVRWD FLWL]HQV JURXS ÀOHG D similar challenge.

Sarasota is famed for its circus history.

For decades our town has been home to circuses, trapeze artists, clowns, midgets, tumblers, daredevils, bareback riders, lion tamers and the like. But did you know about Laughter Unlimited? It is an DPD]LQJ JURXS RI FORZQV ZKR ÀOO WKH YRLG between heath care professionals and families by creating a masterful blend of therapeutic medicine they proudly call “Humor Therapy.”

Under the auspices of Circus Sarasota, this group includes professional clowns, entertainers, musicians, and trained volunteers who make regular visits to nursing homes to enhance the daily life of residents, patients and staff. There, institutionalized seniors experience the comfort of a caring arm around a shoulder. It is amazing to see how most of these residents react to the clowns. Dementia residents rarely have much of any kind of reaction to anything, but in Laughter Unlimited programs, nursing home patients actually become involved and interact. Talented, gentle pranksters bring the old folks to life, returning them to happy moments of their childhoods.

Ten years ago, Laughter Unlimited began as an innovative program at just one nursing home: The Pines of Sarasota.

This came into being under a William G. and Marie Selby Foundation Innovative Partnership grant. (The Selby’s once lived in what is now Selby Gardens. The couple has been gone for decades, of course, but their foundation carries on, doing ever-somuch for the City y of Sarasota.))

Today, Today the Laughter Unlimited team interacts with children in hospitals as well as senior residents of nursing and assistant living facilities. Created

by Circus Sarasota, the program has grown to serve 71 facilities in Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte counties. Most recently, Circus Sarasota implemented this program at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Hospitalized patients of all ages are often not able to join in activities because of physical limitations, or perhaps they simply do not have the desire to join in.

Here, the team makes room-to-room visits.

They work one-on-one with patients, using improvisational visitations to lift spirits p and elevate the quality and meaning of daily dai life.

Laughter has been shown to L reduce stress, ease anxiety and red depression, and decrease the de perception of pain. It has been pe

VFLHQWLÀFDOO\ SURYHQ WR KDYH D SRVLWLYH DQG lasting effect on the body’s immune system, heart, and brain. “Humor with a Purpose” enhances not only the lives of patients, but also the lives of families and staff.

For nursing home residents, a component called “Memories…Lost & Found” is designed to address memorychallenged persons at all levels of impairment. This aspect of the program takes the resident through a series of interactions proven to increase sociability and awareness. “Comedy in Motion” is but another component. It is designed to increase physical range of motion through the use of comedy and clown skills.

There are also additional Interactive Programs for seniors, Inter-generational Events, and even a Men’s Club—all designed to inspire residents to function at their personal best. These programs are simply vehicles by which loving persons are able to establish relationships and

improve the quality of life for others.

|Gail Rubinfeld: Born to be an artist By Diana Colson...

Gail Rubinfeld is an accomplished artist. She loves to create in a variety of media, producing portraits, life drawings, collages, pastels, and anything else that FDWFKHV KHU IDQF\ +LJKO\ SUROLÀF VKH approaches her art with the excitement of D FKLOG ÀOOLQJ WKH ZDOOV RI KHU KRPH KHU gallery, and her many exhibitions ns with graceful, colorful work.

Looking back at her life, she realizes she was always meant to be an artist, but got waylaid by circumstances. Her identical twin sister, Miri, was supposed to EH WKH ÀQH DUWLVW ZKLOH *DLO KDG chosen the more practical road of becoming a fashion designer.

Both the girls took art classes as children in West Harford, CT. Right after high school, Miri moved to Israel and Gail went on to attend Pratt Institute in %URRNO\Q ,W ZDV WKH ÀUVW WLPH the twins had been apart. It wass o a time when letters took weeks to arrive and a phone call could costt d in the hundreds. It was the wild and crazy 70’s, and Gail found thee g. free-wheeling era bewildering.

With temptations surrounding, shee stuck to her guns and graduated d h with honors from Pratt in 1974 with a major in fashion and a minor in professional illustration.

About this time the FAX AX machine appeared, and Miri and nd Gail were back in frequent and rapid touch. h.

As always, Miri kept painting away while le Gail embarked on a multitude of careers: rs: fashion design in New York, real estate, e, interior design, raising three children, n, and ultimately becoming a Siesta Key y innkeeper along with her husband, David. d.

Now Mrs. Marian Rosenfeld, Mirii was deep into painting landscapes,, creating mono prints, and raising herr own family in Israel. She was stunned d when diagnosed with breast cancer.

Having visited the Wellness Center here in Sarasota, Miri dreamed of one day starting a similar cancer center in Jerusalem. (Nothing like our Wellness Center existed in Israel.) This dream was not to materialize during her lifetime however: in 1998, at the age of 46, Miri tragically passed away. Her art supplies had been mailed to Gail’s Florida studio, but they arrived after her death.

Gail took this as a signal to start seriously ly doing her own work.

From that point on, Gail began to approach art as a calling. She was determined to become every bit the artist her treasured sister had been. Gail also set about realizing Miri’s dream of creating the Jerusalem Support Center for Those Affected by Cancer. It was a project Gail thought would take only one year, but it ended up taking eight.

Named “Ma’aganâ€?— which means anchor or safe harbor—the center er in Jerusalem provides a place where people with cancer join together with families and friends to build social and emotional supports to supplement ment FRQYHQWLRQDO PHGLFDO FDUH $ QRQ SURĂ€W SURĂ€W

Gail continues to donate a percentage of her sales to support WKLV QRQ SURĂ€W RUJDQL]DWLRQ At her mother’s instigation, Gail’s father, now i 885, started painting when he was 80. “He had been an electrical 8 engineer,â€? Gail says. “He even en worked on the lunar module. Who w knew he was an artist?â€? kn Well, her father’s 101 year old W uncle knew. “Of course you are un an artist!â€? the old man said. “My brother, Herman, was an artist in bro Hungary.â€?

Hu Ah, ha, thought Gail. I always A knew I was born with the art gene. kne Although her parents both live in A Israel, Israe much to her Dad’s delight, Gail arranged for him to have an art show arran right here in Sarasota.

In 1987â&#x20AC;&#x201D;an era when green cards were not hard to come byâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; America beckoned as the land of promise. Alex decided to join his FRXVLQV ZKR ZHUH ZRUNLQJ LQ WKH Ă&#x20AC;HOGV LQ 5XVNLQ )ORULGD +H ZDV Ă&#x20AC;IWHHQ \HDUV ROG He spoke no English, but by keeping long, hard hours, he could earn sixty to seventy dollars a week. That would mean a lot to his mother back home. So, he went out every day very early in the morning to see who needed an extra worker. It was backbreaking work, but he was young and optimistic.

At that time, one of his cousins was working at Chez Med, a restaurant near Turtles, since closed. His cousin invited Alex over and told him to apply at Turtles.

Alex knew zero English, but dishes donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t talk much, so he applied for the job of dish washer.

He was the first Spanish speaking person to work at Turtles, so when servers came into the kitchen to ask for a particular plate, they would have to pick up one to show him.

As Alex looked around at the restaurant operation, he began to grow more and more ambitious. He moved from Dishwasher to Prep and from Prep to Pantry, where he made salads and the like. Pretty soon Alex was promoted to Expeditorâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; the person who takes a plate from the Chef and dresses it up with appropriate side dishes.

Alex never had the opportunity to go to Culinary School or to formally study English.

He did, however, get his Food Manager &HUWLĂ&#x20AC;FDWLRQ DQG SURXGO\ VKRZHG PH KLV PRVW FXUUHQW FHUWLĂ&#x20AC;FDWH ´:KDW GRHV D &HUWLĂ&#x20AC;HG 3URIHVVLRQDO )RRG Manager do?â&#x20AC;? I asked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He knows temperatures, sanitizing, delivery,â&#x20AC;? responded Alex. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He knows everything there is to know about foods.â&#x20AC;?

Alex went back to school at what was then known as VoTech. There, classes were conducted in Spanish as well as English. He OHDUQHG WKH VNLOOV WR EHFRPH FHUWLĂ&#x20AC;HG Ă&#x20AC;UVW DV

As Alex moved into management, he brought in the only people he could fully trustâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;his family. â&#x20AC;&#x153;About twelve or thirteen years ago, my three brothers came here to work so that they could help the family. They went into restaurant business. When I became General Manager, I put them in charge of the kitchen. Cooking, workingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;it is an art. Julian is Kitchen Manager, Manuel is Sous-Chef, and Agapito is Cook. Whatever needs doing, they do it.â&#x20AC;?

In 1991, Alex had gone back to Mexico to marry his childhood sweetheart, Irma, in a civil ceremony. At that time he was only nineteen.

He went back to Mexico again a year later for the ceremonial wedding. Today, the couple has four children: Ezequiel, who is eighteen, and on the Rams Team at Riverview; Sebastian, ZKR LV Ă&#x20AC;IWHHQ DQG DWWHQGV 6DUDVRWD 3RO\WHFKQLF High School; Maria, ten, and Pedro, eight, who both attend Southside Elementary. Alexâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s four brothers also live in Sarasota along with their families, and their mother and grand-mother often travel from Mexico to visit. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We believed in working hard, developing ourselves, paying our health insurance and

living the American Dream,â&#x20AC;? Alex says with a grin. The brothers all work from four to sixtyĂ&#x20AC;YH KRXUV D ZHHN GRLQJ ZKDWHYHU LW LV WKDW WKH restaurant requires.

Alexâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s management team consists of Ken Idsardi, Amber Davis and himself. They handle the front of the house. His three brothers handle the back of the house.

Dolphins play frequently within eyesight of the bar and one day some tourists were at the bar amazed by this sight. I told them there was a button behind the bar that I could press to cue the dolphins and they believed me!

|Sarasota duo goes to the sea for speed

Somebody else was coming along in the decade of the 1990s. Stephen was born in 1991.

In the second half of the decade of the 1990s, rules were changing. Organizers wanted to bring more manufacturers and more sponsors to offshore powerboat racing, so a â&#x20AC;&#x153;factory classâ&#x20AC;? was created with â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as Steve describes it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; â&#x20AC;&#x153;a sealed motor and a minimum weight.â&#x20AC;? The idea was to feature boats that a family could use one day, and go racing in the next day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It brought several manufacturers back to racing,â&#x20AC;? said Steve. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Formula, Fountain, Laveycraft of California, all dual-purpose boats. But eventually it became an all-racer class until it was discontinued in 2006.â&#x20AC;?

In 2000 Steve created a youth racing division, using 15-horsepower Mercury outboards and a 10-foot boat design used for Disney World rentals. They called it the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Water Mouse,â&#x20AC;? and young Stephen raced it for four years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Then I began to crew with my dad, when I was 14 and 15, driving the boat during testing,â&#x20AC;? Stephen recalled.

The rules for Super Boat International set the minimum age for a racer at 18, but Steve asked for an exception for his son. It was granted and Stephen debuted as a racer at 16. ´$W P\ Ă&#x20AC;UVW UDFH , VWLOO GLGQ¡W KDYH D GULYHUV¡ license,â&#x20AC;? he said. Since the 2007 season, Steve and Stephen have handled increasingly larger and more powerful racers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I do it because I love it,â&#x20AC;? said Stephen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t brag about it.â&#x20AC;?

After racing Velocity-brand boats for more than two decades, the Kildahls have debuted a new raceboat for the 2012 season. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a Phantom, and features a closed cockpit like an airplane. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s there for safety,â&#x20AC;? said Steve. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But there is also a speed advantage.â&#x20AC;?

Some of the mechanical decisions can determine the outcome. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You change propellers based on the conditions,â&#x20AC;? said Steve. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You prop-down for rougher seas.â&#x20AC;?

When the boat is in the air, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Steveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s job at the throttles to pull back on the gas, and then slam them full-bore when the boat is back in the water. In rougher seas, the pounding can be intense. Steve and Stephen are strapped in place with a harness, and wear helmets but thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about the extent of their protection. No kidney belts, shock absorbing, special padding or other amenities.

Because the duo is now racing a closed cockpit boat, Stephen must use an aftfacing television camera to look behind him.

Bradenton racer Joey Gratton died in Key West last November during the world championship races, the third fatality in three days of racing there. Does that cause 21-yearold Stephen to lose any sleep? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I always lose sleep, thinking about how to make the boat go faster,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sarasota is the flagship race of the season,â&#x20AC;? said Steve. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are eight races, one in Michigan, one in New York and six in Florida.â&#x20AC;?

Sarasota is home to many of the teams. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At one time, there were 13 teams here. Now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ă&#x20AC;YH RU VL[ 6DUDVRWD LV KRPH WR D ORW RI RIIVKRUH racers,â&#x20AC;? said the elder Kildahl. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The offshore community is very family-oriented.â&#x20AC;?

The Florida panther is the largest feline carnivore in North America. The last remnant population of the Eastern subspecies has managed to survive in the southern portion of Florida, including Charlotte, Lee, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Monroe, Palm Beach, Brevard, and Miami-Dade counties. Although several cats have been authenticated as far north as Polk County, there appears to be no substantial breeding population north of the Caloosahatchee River and Lake Okeechobee. There are an estimated 120 to 150 panthers living in Florida.

As the Latin name (coryi) implies, the Florida panther was once considered a viable subspecies of the much more successful North American cougar. Recent genetic studies of mitochondrial DNA have disproved this status. There are now, according to Mammal Species of the World, RQO\ VL[ UHFRJQL]HG VXEVSHFLHV RI SXPD Ă&#x20AC;YH of which are located in South America. The Florida panther, although still in desperate need of protection, is no longer considered a viable subspecies by the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading taxonomists. In fact, since the introduction of several Texas pumas for several years to prevent inbreeding, the genetically â&#x20AC;&#x153;pureâ&#x20AC;?

Florida panther no longer exists.

The North and South American cougar family is currently listed as LC (Least Concern) by the IUCN. The cougar is the only large feline in the world whose population is increasing throughout most of its range.

This is especially true of the western cougar population, which is expanding its numbers and range throughout the entire western edge of North America, from Colorado to British Columbia.

The panther in Florida survives largely on feral pigs, armadillos, raccoons, and white-tailed deer. The major cause of death to the Florida panther is the Florida panther. The extremely territorial male requires a tremendous range, of up to 200 square miles depending on available q p prey. Within that given range it may have two to rang

When he matures, should he come across a dominant male in search of his own range, he will likely be seriously injured or killed.

The second leading cause of panther mortality is automobiles. This is also a byproduct of too many cats in too small of a range. As the male cat attempts to avoid the dominant male in any given range, it ZDQGHUV IDUWKHU DĂ&#x20AC;HOG RIWHQ SODFLQJ LWVHOI in a suburban or urban environment where its chance of getting struck and killed by an automobile increases dramatically.

The Florida panther is Floridaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s state animal, a designation granted by the schoolchildren of the state in 1982. The irony is that Floridaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incessant growth and its demand for more subdivisions, shopping malls, and asphalt put constant pressure on the ever-shrinking wild places the panther requires to survive. Scientists have calculated that to prevent further inbreeding, the state would need a resident population of approximately 240 panthers.

Based on the pantherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s habitat needs, this equates to 8,000 to 12,000 square miles of range. With developers edging in from all directions, it is unlikely the panther will HYHU KDYH VXIĂ&#x20AC;FLHQW UDQJH WR PDLQWDLQ LWV population without genetic intervention from outside stock.

A male panther requires more than 5,000 calories a day to survive. A nursing female cat requires twice that. That translates to 3.8 pounds of meat a day for a male to survive and 8 pounds for a female with cubs.

It is estimated that a single panther can kill up to 50 deer a year and 10 times that number of raccoons. The panther has also been known to kill and eat immature alligators, snakes, and iguanas.

With proper management and continued importation of Texas cougars to keep the JHQH SRRO VXIĂ&#x20AC;FLHQWO\ YDULHG WKHUH LV HYHU\ reason to believe this remnant population of pumas will survive in the heartland of south Florida for years to come. Your chances of seeing one of these elusive animals in the wild are almost nil. One of the best places to see panthers in a semiwild environment is at the Babcock Ranch in eastern Charlotte County, covered in the Charlotte County destination section of The Living Gulf Coast.

> A woman decided to treat herself to an overnight stay at the best hotel in town for her 75th birthday. When she checks out the next day, the desk clerk hands her a bill for $800.00.

Upset, she demanded to know why the charge was so high. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s certainly a nice hotel room, but doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t justify the high cost for a one-night stay,â&#x20AC;? she indicated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even order room service.â&#x20AC;? The clerk informs her that it is the standard rate to which she requests to talk to the manager.

The manager listens to her complaint and announces, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sorry you feel this way madam, but this hotel is the best in town and offers patrons an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference Centre which are available for use.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;But I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t use them,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well, they are here and you could have,â&#x20AC;? replied the manager. He went on to explain that she could have also seen one of the shows. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have the best entertainers from the world over performing here,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even see any shows,â&#x20AC;? she declared. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well they are available and you could have attended a show without charge,â&#x20AC;? replied the manager. He in turn countered with his standard response.

Realizing she wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t getting anywhere, she decides to write out a check and hands it to him. |Siesta Key oldest island in region, thanks to Point of Rocks By Paul Rote...

Siesta Key held the title of the No. 1 beach in the nation.

Historically, it appears, the island has had the top spot of beaches in Southwest Florida for about 4300 years.

A 2003 report by University of South Florida scientists indicate that, based on analysis of Point of Rocks near Crescent Beach, â&#x20AC;&#x153;these beach deposits were in place at least 1800 years ago and might have been there as long ago as 4300 years ago. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This means that some type of barrier island was in place at that time.â&#x20AC;?

The report quotes another coastal geologist who wrote that the information â&#x20AC;&#x153;shows that Siesta Key is one of the oldest barrier islands â&#x20AC;Ś along the west-central Florida coast.

Siesta Key beachgoers are familiar with Point of Rocks, a unique beachrock outcrop that juts into the Gulf of Mexico for a little more than a half-mile along the shore. Much of the rock is above the water at low tide, allowing for an up-close exploration RI WKH LQWHUWLGDO ]RQH LQKDELWHG E\ FUDEV OLWWOH Ă&#x20AC;VK VWDUĂ&#x20AC;VK DQG other critters.

The rocks are popular for snorkelers and divers at high tide.

Fishers enjoy a chance to get a little farther away from shore at all times.

Exactly why Point of Rocks exists, and why it is where it is, has always been up in the air. The team admits that question, and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really explain why the rocks are only found at that one location. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most of the proposed theories on beachrock cementation have strong supporting evidence making it impossible to

attribute all beachrock to a single process,â&#x20AC;? they wrote.

The USF scientists submitted samples taken from Point of Rocks to a barrage of tests. They also studied other elements found in the vicinity. Their conclusions? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Without question, the island immediately landward of the present beachrock exposure is not the paleo-island or the portion of the present island â&#x20AC;Ś this means that an older barrier occupied this site and was removed prior to the accumulation of sediments that constitute the landward, present barrier.â&#x20AC;?

The team continues that further data collected â&#x20AC;&#x153;â&#x20AC;Ś implies that an island of considerable size (once) existed â&#x20AC;Ś an island seaward and perhaps much larger than the one present today.â&#x20AC;?

In other words, islands now known as Siesta Key have evolved over time both east and west of Point of Rocks.

Point of Rocks, sea level rise

Rising sea level is one of the looming threats to all barrier island residents â&#x20AC;&#x201D; actually, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a threat to all people living near the water in Florida.

A little history, from â&#x20AC;&#x153;1992 Framework For Actionâ&#x20AC;? by the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program. â&#x20AC;&#x153;During the last ice age (18,000 years ago) temperatures averaged 41 degrees colder than today, and sea level was 328 feet lower. The Florida Gulf Coast was located 80-100 miles west of what is now the mouth of Tampa Bay, and the climate in Florida was described as similar to the present climate in North Carolina. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Changes in sea level are caused by changes in climate, and therefore temperature. The changes that occurred during the last ice age were predominately so slow that plant and animal life were able to adapt to changes in sea level.â&#x20AC;?

What is happening today is a bit different. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Atmospheric loading of greenhouse gases is expected to increase global temperatures and accelerate rising sea levels to rates greater than those in normal climatic cycles.â&#x20AC;?

Greenhouse gases are the fossil fuels that spew from our cars, truck, power plants, lawn mowers and anything else than takes gasoline or coal.

Sarasota Bay may expect water levels 14 inches higher than today in 2065, and 25 inches higher in 2115, according to data accumulated by Mote Marine Laboratory.

Looking back, the Point of Rocks team found that â&#x20AC;&#x153;sea level must have been very close to its present position at least 2000 years from present.â&#x20AC;?

What will happen 2000 years from now, of course, is uncertain to say the least.
