941-349-0194 | ISLAND VISITOR PUBLISHING, LLC | www.islandvp.com Seeing the first total coast-to-coast solar eclipse (78% visible in Tara Woods) in 99 years was so exciting. Experiencing the solar eclipse together with our Tara Woods friends and neighbors was very much a fun event! Everyone had the chance to view the eclipse live outside on the verandah as neighbors shared their special glasses with each other. Inside the Clubhouse residents watched the eclipse on the giant screen with a direct feed from NASA while feasting on “moon burgers” and “sun dogs”. A special “thank you” goes to George and Janet Daly for organizing the event and friends helping to make this an exciting once-in-a-lifetime event for all of us.

TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOC. NEWS By-laws Update The By-laws Committee has completed their annual review and charge from the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors has reviewed their recommendations and intends to put it to a vote from the voting members in good standing. The voting will take place at the January membership meeting. The current by-laws,

proposed amendments with deletions, additions and the rationale for their proposal will be posted in the Clubhouse before the vote. Copies of the proposals will also be included with the notice of the annual meeting. Review them before they are put to vote. Vice President Frank Millette and Board liaison to the By-laws Committee will conduct the vote

FMO NEWS It is late August and I’m writing the FMO article for the October Columns. Where has the summer gone? Hoping everyone had a most enjoyable summer and, more importantly, a safe one. To those of you who have joined or renewed your membership in the FMO, THANK YOU. For those of you who think it is my neighbor’s responsibility to join the FMO, let me suggest

the following. Tara Woods has a CERT Team (COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM) that assists Tara Woods residents in case of emergency or natural disaster. What would happen if there was a HURRICANE or other natural disaster and your survival depended on the CERT Team and they said let my neighbor help and they didn’t? WHERE WOULD YOU

at the meeting. Each proposal will be explained for further clarification if necessary and voted upon individually at that time. Remember to make sure your membership dues are up-to-date so you can participate in this process. Thank You Frank Millette

Consider Multiple Factors When Creating Retirement Plans When you create your financial and investment strategies for retirement, what will you need to know? In other words, what factors should you consider, and how will these factors affect your investment-related decisions, before and during your retirement? Consider the following: •

Age at retirement – Not surprisingly, your retirement date likely will be heavily influenced by your financial situation – so, if you have to keep working, that’s what you’ll do. But if you have a choice in the matter, your decision could have a big impact on your investment strategy. For example, if you want to retire early, you may need to save and invest more aggressively than you would if you plan to work well past typical retirement age. Also, your retirement date may well affect when you start accepting Social Security payments; if you retire early, you might have to start taking your benefits at age 62, even though your monthly checks will be considerably smaller than if you waited until your “full” retirement age, which is likely to be 66 or 67.

Retirement lifestyle – Some people want to spend their retirement years traveling from Athens to Zanzibar, while others simply want to stay close to home and family, pursuing quiet, inexpensive hobbies. Clearly, the lifestyle you choose will affect how much you need to accumulate before you retire and how much you will need to withdraw from your various investment accounts once you do.

Second career – Some people retire from one career only to begin another. If you think you’d like to have a “second act” in your working life, you might need some additional training, or you might just put your existing expertise to work as a consultant. If you do launch a new career, it could clearly affect your financial picture. For one thing, if you add a new source of earned income, you might be able to withdraw less from your retirement accounts each year. (Keep in mind, though, that once you reach 70 ½, you will have to take at least some withdrawals from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan.) On the other hand, if you keep earning income, you can continue putting money into a traditional IRA (until you’re 70 ½) or a Roth IRA (indefinitely) and possibly contribute to a retirement plan for the self-employed, such as a SEP-IRA or an “owneronly” 401(k).

Philanthropy – During your working years, you may have consistently donated money to charitable organizations. And once you retire, you may want to do even more. For one thing, of course, you can volunteer more of your time. But you also might want to set up some more permanent method of financial support. Consequently, you might want to work with your legal advisor and financial professional to incorporate elements of your investment portfolio into your estate plans to provide more support for charitable groups.

As you can see, your retirement goals can affect your investment strategy – and vice versa. So, think carefully about what you want to accomplish, plan ahead and get the help you need. It takes time and effort to achieve a successful retirement, but it’s worth it.

The Autumn leaves drift by my windows…No, no that’s not right. We live in Southwest Florida. There are no Autumn leaves. In fact, we are still at 90 degrees and waiting cautiously for our predicted hurricane! Soon, God willing, our Snowbirds will be heading back to Tara Woods. Our activities will resume and we will be singing our little hearts out once again. It is with great pleasure we welcome Carol McGowen to our New Image Family as our new Chorus Director. September 25, 2017 is our first meeting for this season. Time is changing a wee bit from 1:30 to 12:30 PM. A request has been sent out by Shirley Ringleben, Secretary, for suggestions of songs we might want to present this year!

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen... October is here and we can smell Fall in the air, ok maybe not so much. But Fall is around the corner; that we can agree on. This hot summer is over and we will be starting rehearsals this month for our 26th season. We have some new faces this year and are excited to begin the road to production of Adam’s Eve by Matthew Carlin published by Heuer Publishing, which will be on stage in March of 2018. Next month on November 18th

is the 2nd Community Opportunity Fair where everyone will be able to check out the varied groups and clubs displaying what they offer you to while away the winter season here in paradise. Make sure to mark your calendar. There is more information about this in the Columns and at Saturday’s Coffee. On the 18th of November when you enter the Clubhouse, be sure to stop at the Entertainer’s booth. We are planning on it being even better this year; sorry no nuns serving wine this year. Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart. Pat Dunning Entertainers

We don’t have much tennis news for this October issue of the Columns, but I thought it would be good to give you some information so you can start thinking about our Tara Woods tennis. I hope that all of you had an enjoyable – and healthy – summer. Whether you headed back to your home state or you stayed in Tara Woods, I hope that you got in some playing time on the tennis courts. The upcoming tennis season at Tara Woods is only about one month away, so we hope you are ready to enjoy league play or that you will get involved in our many social tennis activities. League Play

League play usually starts in early November. The actual start dates for the Women’s SWIFT league and the Men’s Red, White, and Blue leagues will be published as soon as we get that information. Women’s Teams Tara Woods will have two Women’s Teams this season: the long-standing Angels (with Sharon Boehlke as Captain) and the newly-named Fusion (with Janice Johnston as Captain). Both teams will practice Tuesdays at 9:00 AM. League games are played on Thursday mornings. Home games start at 10:00 AM. Away games start at various times. The league schedule will be posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board sometime in November. Men’s Teams Tara Woods will not have a Red Team this season, but we will have two White Teams (the Mustangs with Ed Malatesta as Captain and the Stallions with Fred Puhlfuerst as Captain). We will also have one Blue Team (the Tigers with George D’Alessandro as Captain). Both White Teams play on Tuesdays at 1:30 PM; with practice on Mondays and Fridays at 10:30 AM. The Blue Team plays on Thursdays at 1:30 PM; with practice on Mondays at 9:00 AM and Tuesdays at 7:30 AM. Blue League As of early September, we have 4 regular team members ready to play tennis for this coming season here at Tara Woods. A few more are expected sometime in late October and early November. Some of the team members

have been playing on a regular basis here at Tara Woods and at their northern homes, and a few have taken the summer off literally. We look forward to the new season and a winning year. – Bill Powers Round Robins Sunday, November 26th, marks the start of our first Round Robin and our first Tennis Association Meeting of the season. Let’s start out the tennis season with a good turnout for both events. I’m sure you will want to attend the dinner, which will be hosted by Janice & George Johnston. Fred Puhlfuerst volunteered to handle the courtside refreshments. The remaining Round Robins are January 28th, February 25th, and March 25th. We need volunteers to host the dinners and we also need people to handle the courtside snacks on these dates. If you haven’t volunteered in a while, maybe you could consider helping out. Having someone help you with the dinner or the refreshments will make the job easier. Tennis Association There will be a party for Tennis Association members on Sunday, January 14th. Watch for an e-mail from Debbie Polenska with more information on that event. Submitted by Linda Engel

SUMMER FUN

Some friends from Tara Woods who go north to Wisconsin and Illinois for the summer met in Green Bay, Wisconsin for our annual luncheon get-together. It was so good to see Ruth and Ron Bradley again. Sharon and Don Boehlke and Linda and Warren Engel came together, as did Judy and Dale Holat and Louise and Art Frederick. They drove a long way as well as the Bradley’s. Peggy and Dave Boncher have it the easiest; they are already in Green Bay. Ken, Beth and all enjoyed a delicious threecourse lunch and each other’s company. Beth Ferris

As IRMA made her way to Florida as a Category Three Hurricane, many were praying. Some residents evacuated and some remained. All in all, Tara Woods came through it with minimal damage and, more importantly, everyone is safe. A big Thank You to all who helped before, during and after the storm. You all did a fantastic job!

COMPUTER CLUB The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes, and is open to all residents and visitors. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice.

We are meeting at my home during the Summer season like we have in past years. These meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 10:30 AM. They offer a more relaxed atmosphere, with coffee and donuts provided for free. My home is located in the north-west quarter of the park, at 19729 Kara Circle. Lessons will continue in the Club-

A DAY OF CARING 2017 A Day of Caring is a day of Sharing. We will be kicking off our annual fund drive on October 1st and it will run through midDecember. This fund drive raises money to support local charities that help feed local families in need on Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Last year Tara Woods residents contributed $2,304 to Day of Caring. Thank you all again for your generous support. The local charities organizations supported by this fund drive are Fort Myers Rescue Missions, Hispanic Services of Catholic Charities and Wake Up America. Look in the October issue of The Columns for a Day of Caring letter and a contribution envelope. I will be making periodic reports on the progress of the fund drive. If you have any questions

WELCOME BACK Neighbors and Friends and HELLO NEW RESIDENTS It’s hard to believe another season is here already! I hope you had a great summer and enjoyed your travels and that GOING PLACES will help you with your travel plans in the coming season. During my ‘hiatus’, GOING PLACES was busy planning ways to keep you movin’ and on the go. As the season progresses, additional information will be forthcoming. It was brought to my attention that new residents – and we do have a few – and the not so new – and some of the original residents – don’t know me, what I do or the procedure on how to reserve. I coordinate and advise what is available locally and afar – in the theatre, offer day and extended trips, cruises, domestic and foreign travel, answer mega miscellaneous questions, etc. In other words, show you ways to spend your children’s inheritance. With the ‘in park’ and ‘out of park’ program, guaranteed there will be something for you to do. AN IRISH STORY

John Bradford, a Dublin University student, was on the side of the road hitchhiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a big storm. The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly, he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stop. John, desperate for shelter and without thinking about it, got into the car and closed the door...... only to realize there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn’t on. The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road ahead and saw a curve approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life. Then, just before the car hit the curve, a hand appeared out of nowhere through the window, and turned the wheel. John, paralyzed with terror, watched as the hand came through the window, but never touched or harmed him. Shortly thereafter, John saw the lights of a pub appear down the road, so, gathering strength, he jumped out of the car and ran to it. Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and started telling everybody about the horrible experience he had just had. A silence enveloped the pub when everybody realized he was crying.... And wasn’t drunk. Suddenly, the door opened, and two other people walked in from the dark and stormy night. They, like John, were also soaked and out of breath. Looking around, and seeing John Bradford sobbing at the bar, one said to the other…Look Paddy....there’s that bloody idiot that got in the car while we were pushing it!!!!’ Contributed by Bill Nothnagel

THE GARDEN CLUB

Our meeting is Saturday, October 14th, please attend. This is our only meeting before the Fashion Show (Friday, November 3rd) and The Craft Fair (Saturday, November 4th) If you are not a member, please join or volunteer to help for these TWO big events. Without volunteers these events are not possible. If you are new to Tara Woods, ask around; both these events are always fun and you don’t want to miss them. As always, the Fashion Show is a FREE event; you need only to sign up to bring either a salad or a dessert to attend. A sign-up sheet will be in the Clubhouse October 3rd. In order to have enough

of everything to share please follow the instructions on the sign-up sheet. It is very important to note what kind of wine you prefer to drink, so that the correct wines can be purchased or if you are not drinking wine if you would like lemonade or ice tea. Please be mindful of how many people are signing up for salads or desserts; we would like to have more salads than desserts. The Garden Club members will be bringing the cheese platters and the wine. The Garden Club is respectfully asking all dog owners not to walk their dogs in or around the butterfly garden. A great deal of time and money has gone into the butterfly garden and recently the garden had to be cut down because of an alligator. As a result, many of the larvae that would have been

our butterflies was destroyed. Linda and John Hoos will be upgrading the Garden. Linda has been taking some courses at Riverland on butterfly gardens and I look forward to her new ideas. Again, a big Thank You to Linda and John. Rachelle DellaRocca New contact # 239-322-6386 October What to Plant Annuals/Bedding plants: Even though temperatures are still warm, begin planting for the cooler months ahead. Impatiens, alyssum, and dianthus are good plants for the fall/winter garden. Bulbs: Plant agapanthus, rain lily, and Clivia lily now for blooms next spring or summer. Add organic matter to the planting bed for best results. Herbs: A wide range of herbs can be planted from seed or transplants this month.
