“DRINKING HABITS” IN TARA WOODS! In Tara Woods? Not possible!
But, yet, the Entertainers brought to life the story of nuns making award-winning wine at the convent. Again our actors, crew and all the support from the many people working together created a great theater experience. We want to say, “thanks” again for all who came and enjoyed two great nights on stage. There really is the “Magic of Tara Woods”. ~Pat Dunning

FROM THE PRESIDENT March Madness at Tara Woods is now behind us, and we look forward to a calmer April. I hope you took advantage of as many of the fun events as possible that were offered in March. Looking ahead to November, the Board of Directors will be sponsoring the Community Opportunity Fair to be held on Saturday, November 18th from 1:00 – 4:00 PM in the Clubhouse. The time was changed to an early afternoon event as the result of the feedback from last year. Hopefully, this new time will give more opportunity for people to attend. Last year’s event was well received and the groups that participated indicated that it was not only fun, but successful – even if they reached just one person. Hopefully, even more groups will participate this year. The goal is to have every group, club, sport, game, etc. represented at a table to promote their activity and inspire new members. We hope the many new residents in the community, as well as all residents or renters
who are interested in trying something new, will come and see all the opportunities in the community for fun and friendship. There is a short application to fill out with your group’s information and any requests you may have for the event. There will be a poster in the Clubhouse with the forms available, and reminders of the event will be in future Columns. The Board continues to function as your voice with management. Directors Lou Dunning and Nancy Wuebbeler meet with our new manager, Darlene Bradley, on a regular basis to promote your concerns and seek resolutions. Their detailed reports are presented at the Association meetings. The Board voted to change their meetings to the first Thursday of the month at 10:30 AM to better accommodate board members’ schedules. At the March Association meeting I called the members’ attention to a letter I wrote to Stephen Braun, Co-President and COO of
Hometown America. Basically, it was an effort to seek answers to the many questions residents are asking about the impact the additional new homes and residents will have on our community amenities and recreation areas as they now exist. The letter is posted on the back bulletin board, if you want to read it. The Association will be made aware when I receive a reply. Thank you to Director, Lou Dunning, for bringing the Mentoring Program for at-risk youth to our attention at the March 25th Saturday Coffee meeting. If you can give one hour a month it can make a significant difference in the life of a young person. To hear more please attend this Coffee meeting. The next meeting of the Association is on Monday, April 10th at 7:00 PM. This will be the last Association meeting until October. I look forward to seeing you there. Janet Daly

Many contributed, baked cookies, helped pack the boxes, etc., and it is very much appreciated. As one relative said as he gave me the name and address of his loved one, it means so much to them when they receive boxes of cookies and treats, and they know that others care and are thinking about them. Many share the items with others in their unit, too.

FMO NEWS One of our residents made an interesting observation regarding membership in the FMO. He commented that we think nothing about purchasing homeowner’s insurance to protect our homes, automobile insurance to protect our cars, or life insurance to protect our family. Yet, we will not invest $25.00 for a one-year membership in FMO or $65.00 for a three-year membership in FMO to protect our wallet. What did he mean by that? The FMO is our voice in Tallahassee. When the Legislature wanted to put a sales tax on our lots for the
second time in the last several years, it was the FMO that stopped it. When Citizens Insurance refused to insure our sheds and overhangs, it was the FMO that went to bat for its membership. Unfortunately, the membership in the FMO is in decline. There are several reasons for this. The main reason is that our membership is moving away and not telling the new owners about FMO. There are also people that feel it is not their responsibility. It belongs to someone else. The problem is that someone else could cost us significant amounts of monies over
a short period. For those of you who stepped up to the plate, whether it was a one-year, three-year or renewal, THANK YOU. It is truly appreciated. Membership applications are on the back bulletin board along with envelopes to mail your completed applications. Information is also there to remind you what the FMO has done for YOU lately. Should you have any questions or concerns about the FMO, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Stuart Berman

JOKE OF THE MONTH A driver was stuck in a traffic jam on the highway outside Washington D.C. Nothing was moving. Suddenly, a man knocks on the window. The driver rolls down the window and asks, “What’s going on?” “Terrorists have kidnapped Congress, and they are asking for a $100 million dollar ransom. If their demands aren’t met they are going to douse them all in gasoline and set them on fire. We are going from car to car looking for donations.” “How much is everyone giving on average?” asked the driver. The man replies, “About a gallon.”

BAILEY SPEAKS
8-9/17
Hi everybody, my name is Bailey; I am a retired Service Dog from my owner, Lorie Thomas’ late husband. I now reside in Tara Woods. Yes, I am a retired West Highland White Terrier – after all I am 11 years old. If you take 7 years to each human year, I would be 77 years young (I’m old enough??). Anyway, after scratching behind my one ear (not fleas, mind you), I’m putting my paw prints down once a month in the Columns (actually my owner is writing it for me. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?). Every month I’ll be trying to give you little reminders (don’t think otherwise) for my fellow dogs – a recipe, tips, activities in our area and other interesting points of interest. I’m almost like a Dear Abby except I’m Dear Yappy, in other words, “Bailey speaks”. If your four-footed furry friends have a birthday for the upcoming month of the Columns, throw me a bone (no later than the 10th of the month before). I mean, drop a small note with their name, birthday, and age; I’ll give them a good birthday howl along with Paws Up for their special day. Well enough for Bailey Speaks for this month. Except, I don’t want to bark up the wrong tree…but

TARA’S TREASURES
Sharon and Ron Davidson are a classy couple. Everything about the Davidsons stand out, their attitude, their style, their spirit, their talents, etc. Even their home on Steamboat Loop (which was specially ordered from Palm Harbor), is outstanding and tastefully, beautifully
decorated. They were both born in Mattoon, Illinois. Sharon came from a musical family. Her grandmother played the organ and taught Sharon and her sister to harmonize. They were so good that the two young girls sang on the radio station, WLBH. Sharon majored in Arts, Music and Speech,
but once she became a mother to her 3 children she sacrificed her musical career to raise and be with her children. However, in later years, she sang at the Weddings and Funerals for friends. Ron’s father was Chief of Police, a State Trooper and attended FBI school under Hoover! When Ron was
AARP SMART DRIVER COURSE Twenty-one residents attended the AARP Smart Driver Course offered in the Tara Woods Clubhouse on February 24th. The course provided a review of driving skills and technique, as well as strategies and tips to help you adjust to normal age-related changes that may affect your driving ability. Research shows that as a result of completing the course, most people make positive changes to their driving behaviors. After completion of the course, all participants received a certificate that may make them eligible to receive an auto insurance discount for 3 years. This course was arranged in Tara Woods through your Homeowners Association.
8 years old he was afflicted with Polio and in the summer of 1945 he was in a Polio ward with 12 other boys. He missed all of third grade but was able to rejoin his classmates in fourth grade because he studied so hard in the summer! What a good, motivated student! In High School, Ron was President of his class, a sports star, and was Lt. Colonel in ROTC. He later majored in pre-engineering at Eastern Illinois College and then transferred to the University of Illinois to continue his studies in civil engineering. The young couple met in high school – Ron being a basketball player and Sharon a cheerleader. They dated other people but eventually married, and people said it would NEVER last. However, they fooled everyone, and this June they will celebrate 60 years of a loving marriage. Ron had an illustrious career with the Railroad – NY Central, becoming Penn Central and then Conrail RR. He was with them for 34 years. Because Ron was responsible for purchasing and building, the family moved frequently – to Sharonville, OH (where Sharon lived on Sharon Drive!); Indianapolis, IN; Pittsburgh, PA; and Charleston, WV. Fortunately, they were able to reside in Indianapolis for many years and the 3 children were schooled there. Sharon worked part-time in the school system and was able to closely supervise her children. A task well done! Sharon and Ron have many accomplishments, but their 3 children
are their proudest. Their young boys were always building tree houses, forts, and shacks, and now son, Ron, who lives in Naples, FL, has his own company, Davidson Home Builders. He tears down million dollar homes and builds multi-million dollar mansions. He is blessed with a wife and daughter. Tony lives in Floyd Knobs, IN. He, too, has his own construction company, building and remodeling houses. He, also, is blessed with a wife and daughter. Their granddaughter has given them two special great-granddaughters, Tinley and Paisley. Shari, their youngest, lives in Fort Lauderdale and successfully works for the Berkeley Group Management. Shari’s son, Cody, lives in Bloomington, Indiana. In 1994, Sharon and Ron came to Tara Woods and have been on the tennis teams for 22 years; they also bowl and are members of the Midwest Club. At {almost} 80 they still bike and play tennis! Sharon performed in the Entertainers and the Chorus for many, many years. Their daughter remarked after one show, “I never knew my mother could sing like that!” The Davidsons are another example of the special people who live in Tara Woods! Happy 60th Wedding Anniversary! APPRECIATION DAY AT TARA WOODS Tara Woods Office staff and volunteers combined to make for a grand Appreciation Day sponsored by Hometown America. The day started early with coffee and bakery items followed by a challenging poker run. After a light lunch “let the games begin”. Residents tried their hand at numerous games while enjoying the camaraderie and a good laugh or two under a beautiful sunny Florida day. A very popular Free Bingo followed with cash prizes provided by Tara Wood Bingo. After a little rest, it was time for a wonderful evening of music and dancing. Highlighting the evening were numerous and wonderful prizes donated by many area businesses. In addition, Hometown America supplied many delightful gifts. Community Manager Darlene Bradley MC’d the event which included the presentation of an award/plaque to Doug and Debbie Objartel for their many years of service to Tara Woods. The evening also included a wonderful tribute delivered by Irene Dorr for the 2017 Appreciation Day Honoree, Shirley Ringleben. Shirley embodies all the best that is the “Magic of Tara Woods”. Thank you again to Hometown America, the hardworking committee, the many volunteers and all the residents who enjoyed a Grand Day! Lou Dunning

MAGIC SOFTBALL UPDATE As we come to the close of another softball season, the MAGIC can celebrate some great accomplishments. Even though our win/loss record wasn’t our best; yet, the season was very thrilling, producing many more runs than in prior years. This was really shown in the March 13th game against Old Bridge with Magic winning 15 to 10. It has been a MAGICal journey especially with our new “Rookies”. A great big “chest bump” to all the coaching staff and fellow teammates.
And as the MAGIC players train and prepare for next season, we ask that all the Tara Woods MAGIC fans have a safe and wonderful summer so we can see your smiling faces in the stands next year! Thank you for your dedicated support at our games. We would also like to thank Janet and George Daly for the music which enhanced the games; even the other teams and their fans enjoyed the music. Remember to watch for coupons and specials for next season’s games! Oooops, I forgot
– that admission to the games is free.
TENNIS ASSOCIATION MEETING The Tennis Association had many things to discuss and vote upon at their meeting on February 26th. It began with a big round of applause and kudos to Val and Paul Roderick and Jon and Mary Ellen Gold for arranging the dinner, Fred Puhlfuerst and Janice Johnston for the courtside
snacks, and Warren and Linda Engel for their tireless work at setting up the monthly Round Robins. We all looked forward to the next Round Robin which was held on March 26th when Carole Neveu and Connie
Lessard prepared a delicious dinner for our consumption and Liz Wilson provided the courtside snacks. Officers were elected for the next two-year terms. Frank Neveu will remain as Vice President, Carole

The White Team is having a great year!! We were at #8 out of 10 teams. We played four matches since our last publication, and after playing our hearts out we are still at #8 out of 10 teams. Seems like our transmission is broken and we can’t seem to go forward. Oh well – there is always next month – (or maybe next year!!) – Still trying. – Royce La Liberty Blue League We are now tied for third place and have an excellent shot at moving ahead to end the season with a solid third place. As of this writing (March 3rd) two games remain. The weather has been outstanding, and all of our players are in top form. Just a brief note I would like to share with everyone: During a break in a game I watched last week, a player on the opposing team leaned over the chain link fence separating the courts from the spectators and said in a loud voice to the Tara Woods spectators and cheering section, “You guys are the greatest; I only wish we had a similar turn-out for our team. You have no idea how much it means to the players”. Ain’t that the truth. – Bill Powers Submitted by Linda Engel

Women Must Act to Overcome Financial Challenges International Women’s Day, observed on March 8, celebrates the social, cultural and political achievements of women. Yet, women continue to face many challenges. For one thing, women still encounter gender-specific obstacles to their important financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement. If you’re a woman, what can you do to get past these barriers? First of all, you need to recognize them. Here are a few to consider: • Longer life spans – A 65-year-old woman is expected to live, on average, another 20.5 years, compared to 17.9 years for a 65-year-old man, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. That’s another 2½ years of life – and 2½ years more of expenses. • Lower incomes – Women working full time in the United States typically are paid 80% of what men earn, according to Census Bureau data. • More time away from the workforce – Men work an average of 38 years, compared to just 29 for women, according to the Pew Re search Center and the Social Security Administration. The gap is largely due to women taking time off to care for young children and elderly parents. Women who work substantially fewer years than men will miss out on hundreds of thousands of dollars in earnings and many years of contributions to 401(k)s or other retirement plans. These statistics certainly are sobering – but they don’t mean you are powerless to improve your financial security. In fact, you can do quite a lot, including the following: • Boost your retirement plan contributions – Put in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan, and increase your contributions whenever you get a raise. And even if you have a 401(k), you may still be eligible to contribute to an IRA. • Invest for growth – Some studies have shown that women may invest less aggressively than men. If you invest mostly in conservative vehicles, you may run the risk of falling short of your financial goals. To achieve these goals, you’ll need a reasonable amount of growth potential in your portfolio. • Extend your working life – If you like your job, you may want to consider sticking with it a couple of years past when you initially thought you’d retire. You’ll be able to add to your retirement accounts, and the extra years of work may help you increase your Social Security benefits. These payments are based on an average of your highest 35 years of earnings, so if you have a zero in some of these years, it will pull the average down. Consequently, your extra years of work may help erase those zeros. But even if you have a long, unbroken work record, your extended career can help you in regard to Social Security, because the extra money may mean you can afford to delay collecting benefits – and the longer you wait past 62, the bigger your checks will be – at least until you turn 70, when they “max out.” You’ll help yourself by becoming familiar with the special issues women face in meeting their long-term goals. As you know, women have met challenges successfully for a long time. After all, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did – except backwards, and in heels. . ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen…..we did it! The Entertainers finished their 25th Anniversary show. I hope everyone involved enjoyed themselves; I know I did. The Entertainers want to thank everybody who helped make this production a success. When it comes to productions it does take a village. We do hope that you got a chance to spend at least one of the two nights with us enjoying “Drinking Habits”. It was fun for us and we hope that we entertained you. Next year think about coming to both nights. That way you can see how different we make one night from another. Now we all get a break for a few months before we get back on the band wagon for the 2018 season. So for now I will make this short and sweet – please help keep live theater alive; attend as many performances that you can. Support the Arts! Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.

The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month is devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer. The second and fourth Thursdays are reserved for General subjects, and cover
a single specific topic of interest. Last month we started a minicourse of the basics of Microsoft Office. This is the most popular productivity software of all time and in all places and uses. We began Microsoft Word, the word processor in Office that has become the standard in business. In Basics, we started looking at WordPad, the word processor that is included free with all versions of Windows, and the Windows Paint drawing and drafting application. This month we will continue with Office, and move on to the Internet and E-mail in Basics. We will wrap up the Basics by the end of the season, and hope to cover Excel spreadsheets (the other major component of Office) and Google Apps (an online version of Office). It’s never too late to join our
group, even if you’re a total novice. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St.Laurent, The Computer Tutor
Bravo! Bravo! What a fine presentation of An American Celebration by the New Image Chorus on March 25th. All of the La, La, Las, 1, 2, 3, 4 and again and again paid off nicely. You could feel the toe tapping, humming along with the tunes, and nostalgic memories of the audience surround the Tara Woods Clubhouse walls. We would like to give a hearty “Thank You” to Dave Adams, our Chorus Director, the Sound and Lighting Crew, the ticket sellers, Polly Brown for the exceptional choreography, and all of the members of the New Image Chorus. Have a safe journey home, Snowbirds; come join us all in the Fall to Sing Along! 8-9/17

For another year, the Trash and Treasure was a huge success. THANK YOU to Everyone who donated items. A special THANK YOU to ALL the great volunteers; without these people the Trash and Treasure would not be possible. The Garden Club will again be able to hold the Fashion Show in November as a free event. And we will be able to make donations to CROW and ECHO. What To Plant: Annuals: Plant heat-tolerant annuals, such as coleus, vinca, and portulaca. Bulbs: Cannas thrive in the heat of summer. New varieties have colorful leaves as well as flowers. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH The Two primary reasons for the WATCH are the protection of our residents and the observation of our community. Check on your neighbors who may be housebound or ill. If you haven’t seen them for a while, check on them. If you see something out of the ordinary, call and report the problem. (911 or 477-1000). THIS MONTH’S TIPS: I keep coming back with tips on SCAMING. Never give out personal information unless you initiate the call. Examples: SS Numbers, Driver’s License, DOB, Phone Numbers and Credit Card Numbers. When dealing with companies on line, be sure the transactions are secure with the lock icon. Never deal on a line that is a public connection. When disposing of mail, try to shred all names and addresses. Recently I found a Lee County Sheriff agency for Crimes against Senior Citizens (Fraud). You can contact them by calling 258-3287 or 477-1000 and ask for the Fraud Squad.
