MANAGER’S CORNER
Tara Woods Staff would like to wish you all much happiness this Holiday season. We have a feeling that 2019 is going to be our most exciting year yet. For the New Year we have already planned two resolutions: continue improving our existing amenities and look into adding new ways to better serve our residents. Stop by the Office and see our beautiful decorations, say hello and grab a candy or a cookie. Winter weather has a tendency to increase aches and stiffness, but we do offer several ways to loosen up and get some excellent exercise. We have yoga classes Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and we have water aerobics on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It is a beautiful walk around the community or a bicycle ride. What a great way to meet people out and about, a friendly smile or wave goes such a long way to make someone’s day. Our new residents are getting everything arranged and put in its place. We are thrilled that they have chosen our community a place to call home. Welcome to the neighborhood. We are here to make your life easier. “May you never be too grown-up to search the skies on Christmas Eve.” Sincerely, Darlene D. Bradley

The FMO meeting season is in high swing. The next FMO meeting will be held at The Heritage on Friday, December 14th. All meetings begin at 1:00 PM and last approximately 2 hours. Halfway through there is a refreshment break and there is always time for questions and answers. Looking ahead, the January meeting will be hosted by Tara Woods, on Friday, January 11th. Look for more information in the January Columns. Just as it is important for all residents to be a member of the Homeowners Association it is just as important for all residents to be members of the FMO. If it weren’t for YOUR FMO, you wouldn’t be able to enjoy Tuesday Bingo in Tara Woods and your lot rent would have a monthly sales tax of 7%, among other benefits we enjoy and take for granted. Applications are on the back bulletin board along with envelopes to mail your payment. My suggestion is to go for the 3-year membership. This way you don’t have to worry about renewal for 3 years and you save some money besides. Don’t forget about the motor club. Wishing you and your families the very best during the holiday season.

ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES by Janet Daly
Coming up: December: The Tara Woods Christmas Party is on Saturday, December 1st. I hope you have your tickets to this festive occasion hosted by the New England Club. The Christmas Golf Cart Parade and Caroling at the Clubhouse is on Wednesday, December 12th. The parade starts promptly at 6:00 PM. Gather at 5:00 PM in the north parking lot to line up and enjoy the “before the parade” social hour. This is the time to bring your beverages and goodies to share with fellow revelers. Please remember, the parade will not stop along the route. Please don’t offer food or beverages to the carts as they pass by. Your greetings and friendly waves will be appreciated. Cookies and finger desserts to share for the Caroling can be brought to the Clubhouse at 5:00 PM or when you arrive for the Caroling about 7:00 PM. This is BYOB. Hot chocolate and punch will be served as well. This is your opportunity to wear those crazy Holiday hats and outfits and share your Christmas wishes with your friends and neighbors. This is a fun evening for everyone, but please be careful out there. I hope to see you there! Thank You! Thank you to Donna Erhardt and Friends for hosting the Thanksgiving Dinner again this year. What a wonderful way to give thanks for living in beautiful Tara Woods and having the opportunity to celebrate with our friends and neighbors. The Clubhouse should be decorated by now and down Tara Boulevard as well. Thank you to a great committee who worked hard to make our community shine with the joy of Christmas. This was accomplished a little early this year, to accommodate yours truly, and also to check out a new design for the decorations. We hope to add a little each year to make our community sparkle during the Christmas season. ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen…..in December we shovel snow and scrape our car windsh…..oh!, excuse me I was having a flashback to a former life when I lived in the north. Let me start again. In December the Entertainers have a short month of rehearsals. We also get to decorate our Christmas tree on the same day as everyone else who helps decorate their tree in the Clubhouse. It always is a fun time and usually we have refreshments; then afterward the Clubhouse looks transformed with so many trees and lights. The community looks especially pretty too since most of the houses get some decorations on them. I hope everyone has a great Holiday Season, and that you get to spend some time with the people that care about you; and if I don’t get a chance to see you, “Happy Holiday and Merry Christmas” to one and all from the Entertainers, Lou and me. REMINDER – Entertainers meeting will be December 15 following coffee on Saturday. Wow! The holidays are upon us, and to think in less than 4 weeks we’ll be in 2019. Yikes! Will we ever get a breather? Anyway, during the next two holidays in which I’m referring to as Christmas and the New Year (oh, boy! presents and Christmas trees; oops sorry! I’m showing my favorite outdoor activity). We must give thanks to all mankind, which includes young and old, our troops, races, religions, and whatever you were brought up as, but mainly during these holidays, we have family visits, or not. But if you do, it is time to bring out the cookbook and start sharing our holiday dishes which we may enjoy during this festive season. What about us – Yes, US – your four-footed furry friends – sure you can give us turkey (as long as there are no bones) under the table. How about our nourishment for you to make us happy and health,; so we can enjoy every beneficial bitefull once it was prepared. So, in this segment of Bailey Speaks, how about: A Homemade Dog Food for our Holiday Treat. This easy homemade recipe will keep your dog healthy and fit. I bet on my “four paws honor” it’ll be cheaper than store-bought dog food, and it is chuck-full of fresh veggies. Just a reminder, please consult your veterinarian and use personal judgment when applying this information to your own dog’s diet. It takes about 55 minutes for you to prepare this meal for us. Ingredients: 1 ½ cups brown rice 1 tablespoon olive oil 3 lbs of turkey (ground) (there goes some of your leftovers from Thanksgiving or Christmas meal. He! he! But aren’t we worth it!) 3 cups baby spinach chopped 2 carrots, shredded 1 zucchini, shredded ½ cup peas, canned or frozen Directions: 1) In a large sauc pan cook 3 cups of water with rice according to the package instructions. Set aside. 2) Heat olive oil in a large stockpot or if you have a Dutch oven over medium heat. Add your ground turkey and cook until browned, about 3-5 minutes. Make sure to crumble the turkey as it cooks. 3) Stir in spinach, carrots, zucchini, peas and brown rice until the spinach has wilted and the mixture is heated through, about 3-5 minutes. 4) Let it cool completely. Dog Gone It – see how simple it is; our own homemade Christmas dinner – just for us four-footed friends. Instead of the same old can or dry food which we get each and every day. Wow! Wow! And Bow Wow! What a treat! What is nice about this simple recipe is that dogs have different nutrient requirements than humans for their proportional body size. Such as: 1) High quality protein (meat, seafood, dairy or eggs) 2) Fats (meat or oil) 3) Carbohydrates (grains or vegetables) 4) Calcium (dairy) 5) Essential fatty acids (egg yolks or oatmeal) With this recipe, your furry-footed friend has a balance of 50% protein, 25% veggies, and 25% grains, but the ratio can easily be adjusted to suit your dog’s breed or needs. I hope you’ll give it a try and hopefully they will enjoy eating my Dog Gone Holiday Homemade Dog Food recipe. It’ll make a Tail Wagging delicious experience. In the meantime, my time is up for this segment of Bailey Speaks. Hope you had a delicious Thanksgiving without too much to eat. And remember to use those leftovers wisely, especially for us. Please, I beg all of you to keep our Dog Park clean. Take the time to pick up after us. It’s our park, the bags and trash bin are supplied, so, don’t be a lazy owner and not pick up after us. Think of others who want to enjoy the Doggy Park. If not, we may not have one to enjoy coming to. From Bailey and my owner, “We wish all of you a Safe and Happy Holiday Season, Season’s Greetings, Merry Christmas, Joyeux Noёl, Fröhliche Weihnachten, Buon Natale, Feliz Navidad, Happy Hanukah, and Happy Tails till next month.” Bailey

THE GARDEN CLUB I believe everyone who attended the Fashion Show would say it was fantastic. The models looked fabulous in the beautiful clothes from the: Razzle Dazzle Boutique located at 1335 Cape Coral Pkwy E, Cape Coral, FL 33904 I’m sure Cathy, the owner, would love to meet each of you. If you are looking for that one-of-a- kind outfit for whatever, or just something different than you find in the big department stores you should check out their clothes. club than a garden club. Few members work in the garden. The Garden Club is responsible for the Fashion Show, the Craft Fair and the Trash and Treasure, and we have an end-of-season luncheon for members only. Dues are only $5.00, collected once a year at the luncheon. The Garden Club maintains the Butterfly Garden that is near the gazebo. Linda and John Hoos volunteered to care for the garden and have done an outstanding job. Did you see the Halloween decorations? I cannot wait to see what they do again for Christmas. A Big Thank You to Linda and John The Garden Club wishes everyone a Merry Christmas / Happy Hanukkah And A Very Happy New Year Rachelle DellaRocca What to plant December Bedding Plants: To add color to the winter garden, plant masses of begonia, impatiens, and geranium.
Bulbs: Amaryllis is a popular plant for the holiday season. They can be forced to bloom now or planted outdoors for spring blooms. Herbs: Plant herbs that thrive in cool weather. Some to try are parsley, thyme, sage, dill, fennel, and cilantro. Vegetables: Reliable cool season vegetables to plant this month include celery, cauliflower, lettuce, cabbage, and carrot. What to do December Poinsettias: One of the most popular holiday plants is poinsettia. Enjoy it indoors now; then plant in the garden to re-bloom next year. Irrigation: Plants may need irrigation if the weather has been warm and dry. Monitor for signs of stress and water only as needed. Fungal disease: Continue monitoring for brown patch and large patch fungal disease through May. Cultural practices are key in control. Houseplants: Inspect regularly for pests on indoor plants. mind that plant specific temperature, light, and humidity are key to ensuring that indoor plants thrive. Soil Test: If plants did not perform as desired this year or new plantings are being planned, a soil test may be a good idea. Compost: Composting is environmentally friendly and produces a beneficial soil amendment or mulch. Plant debris provides the carbon ingredient needed for successful composting. Pests: While cooler weather generally means fewer pests, some populations actually increase at this time of year. Continue monitoring and treat as needed. Holiday Trees: Consider enjoying a live southern red cedar and then plant it in the landscape when the holidays are over. DOG PARK BARBEQUE
This is Old Glory. Is yours faded and torn? Retire her to a proper disposal. Drop her off at 19553 Charleston Circle (lot 12) or at the Guard House. Replacements are available from Bob Glandorf. $7.00
The Dog Park Barbeque on Sunday, November 4th, was a great success! A huge thank you to our host Bill Black, our grill masters Jon Porter and Tim Lanpher, the set-up and clean-up help, Len Makia, Judy Lanpher, Marie Ivens, Cindy Erikson, and Judy Powers who provided the delicious side dishes. We would also like to thank the many people who attended, with a special shout out to Joan Musso and all those who brought the delicious desserts. Our very talented resident photographer, Sam Jokich, was kind enough to donate his time taking pictures of the many adorable dogs, as well as donating three beautiful pictures for the lottery to help raise money for the park. The lucky winners of these masterpieces were Janell Wissler, Frank Guerin, and Marie Ivens. Thank you to everyone who donated their time and participated in the fun for a good cause.
HEALTH NEWS
We rarely read about men’s Prostate Cancer. The male population needs to be aware of this disease, so it doesn’t become life-threatening. Prostate Cancer is nicknamed the “Silent Cancer” because men do not like to discuss the disease, diagnosis, procedures and treatment alternatives! Prostate Cancer affects 1 in 6 men in their lifetime and kills 1 in 5 of those impacted by the disease. It is commonly thought to be “an old man’s cancer” where one dies of some other illness well before they die of Prostate Cancer. This is False!!!!! Men in their 30’s can and have been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. Men have died from PC while in their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, and so on. Early diagnosis is best because it then leads to more treatment options. Men and their families need to be fully informed about the treatment options so they may make “informed” decisions about their health care choices. Prostate Cancer is an inherited trait cancer. For example, in African American men their ordinary risk factor is 1 in 3 chance of experiencing Prostate Cancer. However, if it is in their family, the risk becomes 100% chance of experiencing PC. In Caucasian males, the risk begins at 1 in 6 chance, but if it is in the family bloodlines, then the risk becomes 1 in 3. It also important to know males and females will carry this risk factor and will pass it along within the family. Prostate Cancer is generally comparable to Breast Cancer in the rate of risk to be found with the cancer and the risk of death.

TARA WOODS HALLOWEEN PARTY On Saturday, October 27th, we had our Halloween party, hosted by Cindy McKay, at the Clubhouse. The decorations and food were amazing. The event featured a Haunted House and an Asylum for all the participants to enjoy! Cindy and her volunteers created a memorable Halloween experience. Thank you to Just for Kicks, all those who helped serve the meal and everyone who assisted in the room set-up and tear-down. The residents in costume were the main attraction. There were clowns, jellyfish, witches, werewolves, a geisha, pirates and many more! The creativity that went into the costumes this year will be hard to match. Prizes were awarded for best couple, men’s and ladies’ costumes. The evening commenced with music and dancing, and a hauntingly good time was had by all.

THIRD ANNUAL DOGGIE CONTEST PARADE AND CONTEST
The Third Annual Doggie Costume Parade and Contest was held on Sunday, October 28th, by the Gazebo with nine dogs participating. There was Wonder Woman, a ballerina, a liger (half lion, half tiger), prom king and queen, and many other fabulous costumes. You could hear a lot of ooh’s and aah’s to encourage the dogs and their owners. I don’t know how the judges (Karen and Dennis Daley from the Presbyterian Church) made their winning selections; the costumes and dogs were really very good. Both Karen and Dennis mentioned that picking the winners was very hard. Congratulations go to the winners: Lori Thomas’ Bailey – most creative, Judy Powers’ Chloe – most comical, and Gwen and Dakota Windancer’s Malachite – ballerina with very fancy foot work. Finally, I would like to thank those who helped to make this all happen. Without them this event could not have proceeded so smoothly. Many thanks go to Lou and Pat Dunning, Janet Daly, Mary Ellen Gold, Linda Hoos, Sam Jokich, Bob Kuhns, Frank Millette, Diane Nunn, Ginnie Pontarelli. A special “Thank You” to all who just showed up to see the dogs and the event, you just being there made the event special. Finally, this whole event would not have been possible without the gracious support by Bob and Emy Stein of Island Visitor Publishing who print our paper, The Columns. Questions to Ask When Considering an Annuity Like everyone, you want to retire comfortably – without worrying about running out of money. And that’s why you should consider every available source of income for your retirement years. One such source might be a fixed annuity – but is it right for you? A fixed annuity is an insurance product that can provide you with an income stream you can’t outlive, although payments also can be structured to end after a certain number of years. Your principal and interest rate are guaranteed, based on the claims-paying ability of the issuing company, and the interest you earn is tax-deferred and will compound annually until you begin taking income. These features are certainly attractive, but, even so, before you invest in an annuity, you will need to ask yourself some key questions, including these: What other sources of guaranteed income will I have available? One way to evaluate the value of an annuity is to determine what other guaranteed income you might have available during retirement. If you find that Social Security and any other sources of assured income, such as a pension, are enough to cover all or most of your essential living expenses, then you may not need any additional guaranteed income from an annuity. However, if these other guaranteed income streams aren’t enough to meet your cost of living, then you might want to invest some of your assets in an annuity. How much of my retirement funds should I consider putting into an annuity? You’ll need to determine the portion of your diversified portfolio that a fixed annuity should occupy, taking into account the nature of this investment – specifically, it’s a fixed-rate, income-producing vehicle. This means you’ll want a certain percentage of your portfolio in stocks, another in bonds, and still another percentage in the guaranteed income from an annuity. The exact percentages will depend on your age, proximity to retirement, risk tolerance and other factors. What are the issues I might want to discuss with a financial professional before investing in an annuity? As mentioned above, you will need to determine if, and how, an annuity meets your needs and how it fits into your portfolio. A financial professional can evaluate your situation and help you answer these questions, as well as inform you about other issues related to an annuity. For example, if you decide to tap in to your annuity earlier than planned, you probably will incur surrender charges. These charges decline each year, usually reaching zero after seven years. Furthermore, different annuities come with different fees, so a financial professional can help determine what options would best suit your needs. You’ll also need to be aware that while the interest you earn is tax-deferred, it isn’t tax-free. You will be taxed at your ordinary income tax rate once you start taking withdrawals, and withdrawals prior to age 59 1/2 may be subject to a 10% federal tax penalty. So, you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor before withdrawing from your annuity. A fixed annuity could be a valuable asset during your retirement years. But, at the same time, it’s a big investment – so get the help you need to determine if you’re making the right choice. Welcome back to our Winter residents! On Thursday, December 6th, the Computer Club will begin a new season of free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursdays of each month are devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use
your computer. The second and fourth Thursdays, are reserved for General subjects and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. Computer Basics includes a wide range of generic topics, such as computer types and components, the Windows Desktop, programs, files, folders, games, internet, email, and multi-media, as well as an overview of Wordpad and MS Paint. General subjects this year will examine Windows 10, ebooks, social media, smart phones, tablets, and Google and Android devices. Other topics will be added later as time allows. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. This is a great time to learn the Basics; we are starting again at the very beginning and
assume that you know nothing about computers. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St. Laurent, The Computer Tutor

A Day of Caring is a day of Sharing. We kicked off our annual fund drive on October 1st and it will run through mid-December. This fund drive raises money to support local charities that help feed local families in need on the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Last year Tara Woods residents contributed $2,436 to A Day of Caring. Thank you all again for your generous support. The local charity organizations supported by this fund drive are Fort Myers Rescue Missions, Hispanic Services of Catholic Charities, and Wake Up America. Look in the October issue of The Columns for A Day of Caring letter and a contribution envelope. I will be making periodic reports on the progress of the fund drive. If you have any questions regarding A Day of Caring, please call John D’Amico at 731-7928. Your contribution can either be mailed or dropped in the Day of Caring contribution box located on the windowsill of the Tara Woods Homeowners Office. Please use the Day of Caring envelope provided. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH Your NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH is working for you. The two primary reasons for the WATCH are the protection of our residents and the observation of our community. Check on your neighbors who may be housebound or ill. If you haven’t seen them for a while, check on them. If you see something out of the ordinary, call and report the problem. (911 or 239-477-1000) THIS MONTH’S TIPS: Keep lights on during the evening. Try to have an entry light that comes on when someone walks down your drive or property. Lock your house, car or truck,
garage or shed every night or while away. Stay Safe Tara Woods “SILVER ALERT” Update We are looking for additional volunteers to aid in our program. Another month has gone by, and as you are reading this, the Tennis Association’s first Round Robin of the season is over and hopefully everyone had a nice, pleasant experience. Also, our first Tennis Association Meeting of the new season is in the books. We are looking forward to the holiday season, many social events among good friends, and our wish for a peaceful and blessed holiday and new year. Here’s wishing you and yours Happy Holidays. Hope to see you all on the courts. Our next Round Robin will be on January 27th, with the Tennis Association Meeting following in the evening. – Roger Rafferty TENNIS LEAGUES Both the Women’s and Men’s Teams started their league play in November. Because of the deadline for this issue of The Columns, we only have a few scores to re-
port. There will be more scores to share in the January issue. WOMEN’S LEAGUE Women’s Team – Angels The Tara Woods Angels began their league play on Thursday, November 8th, with a home game against the Six Lakes Seagulls. Conditions were very hot on the courts, but the Angels were successful in winning all 6 sets. What a great start to the season! As is the custom after our home games, we invited the Six Lakes women to join us on the Verandah for refreshments. Our whole team pitched in to serve our guests, and our first after-game social was a great success. After the Six Lakes team left and we were cleaning up the leftovers and celebrating our victory, I heard someone say, “We may be angels, but we play like

devils” ¬– well said! We appreciate our spectators coming out to watch our home games and we hope that you will continue to watch us play and show your support for the Tara Woods women’s team. Our home games start at 10:00 AM. The away games have various start times; these are shown on our league schedule which has been posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board. – Linda Engel MEN’S LEAGUE White Team – Stallions Hi everyone. It is really nice to see all the people together again – good friends, good weather, and some fun tennis. Hopefully, everyone is looking forward to a great winter of tennis. We (The Stallions) play on Tuesday afternoons starting at 1:30 PM. We have posted the game schedule on our Tennis Bulletin Board. This year, the team consists of 10 full-time players who are very eager to play tennis and have a lot of fun. Our first match was held on Tuesday, November 6th, against the team from Lake Fairways. Our guys stepped up to the challenge and managed to win 5 out of 6 sets. We really appreciate your coming out to see us play. It inspires us to play the best we can. Thanks. – Glen Fisher Blue Team – Tigers This is the start of the Tara Woods tennis season. The Tigers started the season on a positive note. The first week we opened against the Six Lakes Raptors. We won 4 sets and lost 2. It was a pleasant good start for players who have not played competitive tennis for the last 6 months or so. We had a chance to see the new construction of the new clubhouse and other facilities at Six Lakes. It is very impressive. Our second match of the season was Thursday, November 8th.
We faced the Herons Glen Yard Dogs. Unfortunately, we were only able to manage 1 win. Being a little short on players as the season starts, we hope for stronger performance as the season goes on. Our third match was scheduled for November 15th , at Lake Fairways. – Dale Holat Blue Team – Mustangs We opened our 2018-2019 season on Thursday, November 1st, at home against Six Lakes. Led by newcomer Ed Sandre and returning players Don Boehlke, Gene Dickie, Roger Rafferty, Mike Renzulli, and myself, we were able to win all 6 sets. We continue to practice twice a week and play our matches on Thursdays, as all team members are back in Tara Woods. Our schedule is posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board. We welcome all to see us have FUN and enjoy a nice afternoon of tennis when you can. Our second match was played on Thursday, November 8th, at Herons Glen. The results of that match had Tara Woods winning 4 sets and Herons Glen winning 2. – Ed Malatesta ROUND ROBINS Our first Round Robin was scheduled for Sunday, November 25th. Results and details of the day will be reported in the next edition of The Columns. Just a reminder, here is the schedule for the rest of the season: December 2018 – No Round Robin Due to Holiday Sunday, January 27th Sunday, February 24th Sunday, March 31st All residents are invited to participate in this event, and those interested are invited to attend the Tennis Association Meeting later in the day at the Clubhouse. Details are on the Round Robin Sign-up Sheet posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board. This event is just to have a good time, get some exercise, and enjoy some camaraderie with your neighbors. We encourage all to attend and participate. – Jon Gold

ATTENTION all TARA WOODS BIKERS!! aka TARA’S NOT SO WILD HOGS!
We are creating a list of bikers who would like to be informed of group rides. We have noticed an increased population of bikes in the neighborhood and would like to include you when we ride. We typically take a nice ride and stop to have lunch or dinner together. We have lots of fun, enjoy good food and fellowship, and would love to have you ride along. If you would like to be included on our list or have any questions, please contact Donna Erhardt 239-322-0070.

fore the season beings after January 1st. Our games are Monday and Wednesday nights in Punta Gorda. We’re always done by 7:00 PM. Afterwards many of us stop at local eateries to rehash the games, and now and then we celebrate our victories! We also put on a Spaghetti Dinner in January that is a great time and provides us with some funds for team expenses. Below is our initial game schedule. It was changed twice last year, so this may not be the final printing. Please call one of our coaches if you have any inquiries: Bill Hubbs, Bob Uccello, Larry Baldwin, and Rod Browder.
