Stuart & Belle Berman Stuart and Belle Berman

moved into Tara Woods in 2009 and we have never been the same. You will see why they were chosen to be this year’s honorees. Stu volunteers for many, many organizations with enthusiasm and zest, which is very contagious. Belle, on the other hand, is the complete opposite – quiet, shy and very sweet. They blend and work together and they have made a great couple for 52 years. Stu was born in Brooklyn, attended New York City Community College of Applied Arts and Sciences and then joined the Navy at age 20. While stationed in Memphis, Tennessee, he met his “Southern Belle”, who later became his wife. Belle grew up in the same neighborhood as Elvis Presley and Elvis even played basketball with her cousin! After they were married in 1967; the Berman’s moved to New Jersey for 10 years and Stuart attended and graduated from Rutgers University and worked at American Standard during the day. They were

2019 APPRECIATION DAY HONOREES blessed with a daughter, Lori, and a son, Michael. From there they moved to Richmond, Virginia, for 29 years. If you know Stu, you know he does not simply join an organization but utilizes his strong, leadership skills and becomes an officer in many of these organizations, e.g., Knights of Pythias, where he was elected Grand Chancellor; President of the State of Virginia. He was also, a member of Employee Volunteer Committee which supported Special Olympics and Make a Wish. After “RETIRING” to Tara Woods, he slowed down to only serve as Treasurer of Happy Hour; helper at the monthly Pancake Breakfast; member of Sound & Lighting; NY/NJ Club and the Mid-Atlantic Club, where he served as an officer. He was also Vice President of the TWHA, and is Tara Woods’ representative for FMO; Past President of New Image Chorus; member of CERT; and IF you are wondering who is waving to you as you enter the

Tara Woods gate, YES, it is Thanks, Stu and Belle, for our Stu, who is gate attendant all you do and who you are! two days a week. Of course, the Berman’s also have de~ Mary Nothnagel livered phone books and The Columns. So he doesn’t get bored, Stuart has been past Treasurer of Disabled American Vets, and he is current Secretary/ Treasurer of the Vietnam Vets in Cape Coral. He is also Secretary/Treasurer of the Southeast Pythian Association; past Vice President of Southern Florida and Regional Councilor for the Eastern U.S. for Forester’s Financial; and Vice President of Temple Beth Shalom. Behind every successful man is a woman and Belle is the “other half” of this strong 52 year team. Even during Belle’s physical challenges, she remains the same, kind, sweet lady. Now you can see why they were selected to be Tara Wood’s 2019 Honorees.

MANAGER’S CORNER February, really has it been a whole year, already! Welcome back Home; we are glad to see you have returned. February is month for Resident Appreciation; thank you for calling Tara Woods Home. Residents are in full swing with parties, tennis, bocce ball, softball, golf, bowling, pickleball, horseshoes, etc. Take a drive around and see all that has happened at Tara Woods. While you were away, we were able to get in quite a few new projects over the past few months (some still under way, but in the works never the less). We had the roof replaced on the Clubhouse, put in the new pickleball courts, moved the horse shoe pits, added a new picnic area with a grill, new A/C’s in the Clubhouse, new pumps in the pools, added a few new homes in the front section of the community, fresh paint, new shrubs and added some new stop signs around. It is time to start getting ready for our Annual Resident Appreciation Day. This year’s theme will be a Hawaiian luau; get those grass skirts out. Saturday, February 23rd, we at Hometown America provide a day of funfilled games, lunch provided by Tara Woods, prizes, Bingo, and an evening of dancing and door prizes. Our residents participate in fun games, like bocce ball, pickleball, tennis, basketball and various other games. It’s a way to meet new people and get to know your neighbors. What a great day so come on out and join us. If you have visitors or company, you can purchase a lunch ticket for $5.00 per person. We have added a new Sales member to the team, Sam Schmidt. Stop by and meet him; all sales members are now housed out of the front office. The model center no longer has an office so if you need to list your home or would like to see the models, Sam or Mary would be glad to assist you with your needs. Please be aware of our speed limit of 20 mph. As we have many walkers and bike riders, patience is the name of the game. While on the subject of safety, children are not allowed to drive golf carts until 16 years of age with a driving permit. We do ask our bike riders and walkers to wear bright colored clothing and always have lights on your bike when riding at night. See you at the Residents Appreciation Day! Darlene D. FMO NEWS TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS At a recent Saturday Morning Coffee, I was talking about the January FMO meeting that Tara Woods was going to host. One of the residents stood up and asked what the FMO was. So here goes for longtime residents, new residents and renters. FMO stands for Federation of Manufactured Homeowners. It is OUR organization, and with your dues maintains a lobbyist in Tallahassee who looks out for our interests. For those of you who were not here for the recent elections, FMO supported Amendment Two which called for maintaining the cap on our real estate taxes. As residents and renters, the real estate tax is a pass through that we pay in our rent. When the Legislature was looking for additional funding, they were going to put a 7% sales tax on YOUR lot rent each and every month. Once again, our representative, in Tallahassee, was able to prevent this from happening. For those of you who enjoy playing Bingo, it was the FMO that encouraged the legislature to support Bingo in our communities. If the FMO was not here to support you, your MONTHLY LOT RENT could be as much as $75.00 per month more. A one-year membership in the FMO is $25.00 and a three-year membership is $65.00. Which would you rather pay? Applications and mailing envelopes are on the back bulletin board. As the saying goes, there is strength in numbers. Your support of the FMO and TWHA is vital to ensure that your voice is heard. I want to thank all who provided refreshments for our January FMO meeting which was hosted by Tara Woods. It was greatly appreciated. The February FMO meeting will be held at Serendipity MHP in North Fort Myers on Friday, February 8th, starting at 1:00 PM. All are welcome. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact the writer. 5-19

BAILEY SPEAKS

Just when I get caught up with chasing my tail as stated last month, out pops another month of Bailey Speaks. Bow wow. Bow wow. Boy, what seasonable weather we’ve been having, even a few days of coolness. Our residents and our snowbirds are out enjoying every minute of this great weather – taking advantage of all the outdoor activities we have in our Tara Woods community. Seeing our 4-footed along with our 2-legged friends, golf carts parade up and down our streets, seems we have our traffic jams in our subdivision like rush hour traffic on Pine Island or Del Prado roads. Welcome, welcome for a few more months. February is a short month, with only 28 days. Sorry, no Leap Year this year, but we will next year in 2020. We have President’s Day and the Chinese New Year beginning on the 8th, the Year of the Pig. But, the sweetest day of all is Valentine’s Day on the 14th. No matter what age, the expressions of this day can be exchanged through flowers, cards, hugs, kisses and, of course, chocolate. (Just a reminder – no chocolate for us, a hazardous danger to our well-being.) In this segment of Bailey Speaks, I’m addressing how our pet owners might try to express their affection for pets. In return, my Valentine’s saying to all pet owners is: Happiness starts with a wet nose and ends with a tail, although we have a wet and cold nose, we have a very warm heart. 1) My dog is always in the mood to cuddle and be my protector. 2) My dog’s presence is like a constant high five. 3) My dog never complains about my cooking. 4) My dog never leaves the toilet seat up. 5) My dog loves the short to long walks. 6) My dog gives me gifts. (Can be taken two ways…) 7) My dog keeps me warm at night and may or may not take the covers. 8) My dog doesn’t fight over the remote and will tolerate my choice of TV shows. 9) My dog shares my beliefs that are on my behalf. 10) But mainly, my dog loves me unconditionally. That’s why he’s my best friend always. So, my time is up for Bailey Speaks for this month, once again. Happy Valentine’s Day one sloppy kiss and lick to a warm embracing nudge. In other words, it is what it is. Reminder to pick up after us and watch out for the gators as mating season is approaching. Happy Tails, Till next month, Bailey

TARA WOODS SOUND & LIGHTING w good vo nd & Lighting is looking for a fe lunteers Sou Sound & Lighting is looking for a couple of residents with some experience in audio/video recording to help record/video some of the events at Tara Woods for the purpose of preserving the events for others to see in the future. THE GARDEN CLUB The Garden Club meeting is Saturday, February 9th, immediately after Pancake Breakfast. This is the only meeting before the Trash and Treasure. We will be planning our luncheon, which is in April, and is open ONLY to Garden Club Members. Anyone who wants to join, please come to this meeting. We will be collecting dues at this meeting. Dues are $5.00; please, put in an envelope with your name and phone number and email address written on it. I want to remind everyone that the donations to the Trash and Treasure make it possible for the Fashion Show to be a Free Event. So, please, if you have items that are clean and useable that you are giving away, hold onto them until Friday, March 1st. (To all our wonderful volunteers, please put this date on your calendar. At 9:00 AM we will need to move tables and set up for the sale, also the next day, Saturday, March 2nd, after 1:00 PM we will need to put tables back in place.) This year’s Trash and Treasure is Saturday, March 2nd. I also want to mention that some of our monies are used to care for the Butterfly Garden near the Gazebo, and we make donations to CROW and ECHO. If you don’t know about these organizations,

please take the time to look them up on the internet. As a reminder, we live in USDA planting zone 10a. I found a great website to see lots of plants that thrive in this zone: anniesannuals.com. Rachelle DellaRocca What to Do February Lawns: Fertilize lawns this month. Choose one (not a weed & feed) with no or very little phosphorus unless a soil test indicates the need for it. A fertilizer with controlled- release nitrogen will give longer lasting results. Grasses for Florida lawns: Bahiagrass, Bermudagrass, Centipedegrass, St. Augustinegrass, and Zoysiagrass. Prune Roses: Roses should be pruned this month to reduce and improve the overall form. After pruning, fertilize and apply a fresh layer of mulch. Blooming will begin eight to nine weeks after pruning. Fertilize Shrubs and Palms: Spread fertilizer evenly over the soil surface and water in. Follow with a fresh layer of mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Hold off pruning cold-damaged branches until new growth starts. Lawn Weeds: Apply a pre-emergent weed killer (not a weed and feed) to

lawns this month to prevent germination of warm season weed seeds. Apply when temperatures rise to 65°F for 4-5 days. Timing is important for good control. Spray: When avocados and mango have lost 2/3 of blossoms, spray copper fungicide to control anthracnose. Fruits: If not done in January, fertilize fruit trees including citrus now. What to plant February Bedding Plants: Good performers in South Florida’s mild winter include impatiens, verbena, dianthus, strawflower, and lobelia. Bulbs: Many bulbs can be planted now. Divide large crowded clumps. Provide adequate water to establish. Some to try are Amazon lily, crinum, and agapanthus. Ground Covers: Consider replacing areas of grass with drought tolerant, low maintenance ground covers. Vegetables: Begin planting warm season crops this month. Sweet potato, cantaloupe, eggplant and squash can be started while temperatures are cool. Excerpts from the University of Florida Gardening Calendar for South Florida. Complete information can be found on line: http://solutionsforyourlife.ufl.edu/ lawn_and_garden/calendar/

NEW YEAR’S EVE 2018 “Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne!” We don’t know what any of that really means, but we sing it every New Year’s Eve, when the clock strikes midnight. Actually “auld lang syne” is translated as times gone by. The year 2018 has gone by and now we begin a whole new year with resolutions and goals that probably won’t make it through the first week of January. Around 200 residents and their guests rocked the Clubhouse on New Year’s Eve from 8:00 PM until the wee hours of the morning. The members of each individual table took responsibility for decorating their table and providing snacks for their specific group. The decorations were spectacular, and the food was outstanding. Attendees filled the dance floor for most of the evening along with a little boogying around the perimeter of the hall and out onto the front porch. The attire ranged from Florida casual to just plain snazzy. New friends were made and old acquaintances shared conversations along with everyone’s favorite beverage. Prizes were awarded and winners went home with all smiles. On a sad note, one attendee went home without her brand new black sweater. If you might know its whereabouts, please take it to the Lost and Found in the Library. Happy New Year to everyone and may you enjoy a safe and healthy 2019! Sue Clark

It has been a whirlwind of activities since the New Year started for the Midwest Club. It began with the Midwest sponsoring of the New Year’s Eve party. Over 200 people danced, laughed, and nibbled on some delicious appetizers, as they waited to ring in the New Year at midnight. Two weeks later, on January 11th, our first meeting of 2019 occurred. It was a beach themed party with beach game fun and frivolity. The club served hamburgers and hot dogs with an array of scrumptious salads and desserts being provided by the club members. On February 1st the Midwest Club is gathering together again to meet and share wonderful soups, salads, and desserts prepared by the members. Inquiring minds may want to know why the club is meeting early in February. It is due to the fact that the Midwest Club is sponsoring the Valentine’s Party on Saturday, February 9th. Tickets went on sale January 8th and the number of tickets is limited. So, hope you bought yours at Tuesday Bingo or Saturday Morning Coffee and are treating your sweeties to a night of great food and dancing. Debbie Polenska

CANADIAN CLUB Welcome back to all of you to your Florida getaway. After the first few days of cleaning and getting organized it is time to enjoy the weather and meet up with friends new and old. Please let me know if there are new owners/renters that I need to add to our Canadian directory. The next Canadian Club dinner is Friday, February 15th, at 5:00 PM and is being hosted by Dave & Jean Sharp and David & Brenda Redgers. The menu is fajitas and we invite you to help with salads, appetizers and desserts. If you could find a moment to RSVP what you could bring, just so we don’t end up with all desserts (but would that be so bad!). Just email me at bzztoy@hotmail.com. We of course will have the 50/50 drawing–who wouldn’t want to add a little pocket change with the exchange rate at almost 40%! Stretch your arms for the arms-length number of tickets. Three for $5.00 or arms-length for $10.00. We all send our best wishes and positive thoughts to Connie and Andy as she progresses through her treatments over the next couple of months. Looking forward to seeing you all in February. Brenda Redgers

Please get the information to me by Saturday, February 23rd. This is an annual project of the Inspirations Group here in Tara Woods. We don’t meet monthly any longer but we have continued with doing our service projects. We would appreciate contributions to help with the cost of mailing the boxes and for purchasing the items. Those can be given to Beth Ferris. Ann Scott will put up a sign-up list on the bulletin board in March for baking cookies, or call Beth or Ann. The boxes are very much appreciated, and we thank you for your help and support. We will be packing up the boxes in March. Beth Ferris, 239-543-6295 • Ann Scott, 239-543-9285

Tara Woods Computer Club great time to learn the Basics; we are starting again at the very beginning and assume that you know nothing about computers. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will

answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St. Laurent, The Computer Tutor

Your NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH is working for you.

The two primary reasons for the WATCH are the protection of our residents and the observation of our community. Check on your neighbors who may be housebound or ill. If you haven’t seen them for a while, check on them. If you see something out of the ordinary, call and report the problem. (911 or 239-477-1000).

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

We have been receiving calls from homeowners and renters at the front gate for assistance, police, fire and security problems to help with their emergency. The men working the gate are Gate Attendants, not security guards and can’t leave their post. They can’t answer the questions the dispatcher will ask. This also takes time better used to respond to your problem. Please call 911(Emergency) or 239 477-1000 (Lee County Sheriff Dispatch Center. For all other security problems contact Hometown America Management. Bob Glandorf

The Computer Club has begun a new season of free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month are devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer, including computer types and components, the Windows Desktop, programs, files, folders, games, internet, email, and multi-media, as well as an overview of WordPad and MS Paint. The second and fourth Thursday are reserved for General subjects; this year we plan to examine computer speech, social media, smart phones, and tablets. Other topics will be added later as time allows. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. This is a

The holidays are over; I hope everyone had a blessed and peaceful holiday season. We in the Tennis Association invite anyone who would like to play or learn how to play to contact me at 239-5437556, or contact anyone you know who plays tennis. You are also invited to stop at the courts anytime you see people playing; they will be able to answer most questions about the tennis community here in Tara Woods. We are an all-inclusive group; from experienced players to beginners, we accommo-

date everyone. We are currently looking forward to our second Round Robin of the winter season on Sunday, January 27th. The Tennis Association dinner and meeting will follow that evening, with a social at 4:30 PM, dinner at 5:00 PM, and our meeting to follow. You needn’t play in the Round Robin

event to participate in the dinner and meeting. Tennis Association dues are $1.00 per year. Hope to see you on the courts. Roger Rafferty TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE Women’s Team – Angels As I write this article in early January, the Tara Woods Angels remain in first place with 24 wins and only 6 losses. We have 3 more wins than the second place team, the Herons Glen Volley Girls, who we are scheduled to play on January 10th. We hope to have a good match that day and increase our lead. I will report on that outcome in the next issue of The Columns. We are happy with this great start to the season for our team! On January 3rd we played the women’s team from Sabal Springs. After a very competitive match, the Angels came out on top with 4 wins and only 2 losses. Afterwards, our team enjoyed a very good lunch in Dina’s Restaurant – without our competitors joining us, but we had a great time celebrating by ourselves. We will be playing four more matches in January before I will be able to report on our standings for the March issue of The Columns – I hope to have good news to report at that time. Linda Engel MEN’S LEAGUE White Team – Stallions WOW, what a great match we, the Tara Woods Stallions, had against the first place team on January 8th. The weather was perfect – hot, sunshine, and no wind. All our team members played their hearts out and we managed to win 4 out of 6 sets. Congratulations!!!! Glen Fisher Blue Team – Tigers We played our last match of 2018 against the Pine Lake Pitbulls on December 13th. We were unable to do better; we only had 2 wins. We restarted the season after January 1st with a home game against the Herons Glen Smashers on January 3rd. Unfortunately we didn’t do very well; we lost 5 and won only 1. Our next match was January 10th against the Admirals from Admiralty. The results will be in next month’s issue of The Columns. We are still playing these matches short of team players still due to holiday absences. We hope to have people back shortly. We have 12 more matches in the season to improve our record. Dale Holat Blue Team – Mustangs As I write this article on January 6th, we have taken over first place in the Blue

division. We have won 10 out of a possible 12 sets in our last two matches, and we lead by 2 sets heading into our match with Herons Glen on Thursday, January 10th. I feel our strongest team accomplishment has been NO injuries after six matches! We have only had to use subs in one match this season! Having a healthy team and being able to play with the same group each week has certainly made my position easier. Having started to play a more demanding schedule will be a clearer indication of what type of team we have; and the team and I are looking forward to this. As always, stay healthy, and see you on the courts! Ed Malatesta ROUND ROBIN There is not much news to report because there was no Round Robin in December due to the holidays. The sign-up sheet for the January 27th Round Robin is up as of this writing and will be taken down January 22nd. For future reference, the next Round Robins are scheduled for February 24th and March 31st. Sign-up sheets will be up by the first of each respective month. As always, the Tennis Association Meeting is scheduled later on the day of the Round Robins. Details of the meetings are on the bulletin board at the tennis courts. I hope all had a great holiday and look forward to seeing you on the 27th. Jon Gold. Submitted by Linda Engel

MAGIC SOFTBALL The Tara Woods Magic Softball team played our first game on January 7th, versus Del Tura. We had 12 hits, but also grounded into 4 double plays, which stopped some of our rallyies. As a result, we came up short that game. We play every Monday and Wednesday night at Carmelita Park in Punta Gorda. There are three dates during February where we are NOT scheduled: February 4th, 18th, and 27th. As of January 10th, we had sold 150 tickets to our Spaghetti Dinner, with a goal of about 200, for the January 17th event. Folks who attend every year rave about the great food and fast, efficient service, so it’s always fresh and hot. Many thanks to those of you who support the Magic through attendance at our games and patronage of our dinner. Bill Hubbs

NEW PICKLE BALL COURTS The new Pickleball Courts are operational and located on Shiloh Lane between the Putting Green and the Butterfly Garden. Activity abounds, complete with a resident fan base. The local alligators make it a point to keep an eye on the courts by lurking near the shore whenever the pop of the ball can be heard. So, BEWARE and BE CAREFUL should your ball land in the lake. The new courts schedule is as follows: General Playtime 9:00 -11:00 AM - 7 days a week 4:00 - 6:00 PM - 7 days a week Please note that a sign-up sheet is posted on the fence to reserve a court at any time other than general playtime. Just post your name and the court is yours for that time slot. The courts are appropriately named Court 1 and Court 2 (Court 1 located closest to the Putting Green). The courts are regulation size with an 8’ fence. Several benches are located just outside the courts for waiting players and enthusiastic onlookers. It truly is an exciting time for Tara Woods Pickleball. Check the website for more information or stop by the courts during general playtime to inquire. You can also contact Lynn Makia at 513-4762465 or Diane Gibson at 603-244-0536.
