Cabbage Key Cruise on Tropic Star April 10, 2018 April 10th was a partly cloudy day with a nice breeze. Just perfect weather as we left the dock of Jug Creek with members of the Mid-Atlantic Club. The female crew suggested we hang on as the captain put the throttle of the Tropical Star to full speed. The boat was originally designed for an amusement park safari ride. It sped along at 6 knots (a slow running speed), on a calm day. There was plenty of time to take in some of the local history of the islands we passed by. We learned a 104-acre island known as Little Bokeelia Island, recently sold for $14.5 million down from the listed $24.5 million to a famous internet entrepreneur, Mark Pentecost, owner of “It Works”. The island is complete with a desalinization water supply and a 1920’s Spanish themed mansion built by battery inventor Burgess, who entertained Thomas Edison on the island. It is no surprise that it was also known as Burgess Island as well. Our first stop was Cayo Costa Park to drop off some day travelers that got to enjoy the 9 miles of pristine undeveloped beaches. We also picked up half a dozen people to enjoy the famous Cabbage Key Restaurant, open 365 days a year. We ordered lunch in the scenic open-air restaurant which had been featured in a National Geographic article as one of the 10 best places to visit in Fort Myers. It was easy to see why it was chosen. Some of our group ordered the “cheeseburger in paradise”, made famous by the song of the same name by Jimmy Buffet who once ate there. Thousands of signed dollar bills are taped to the walls and are donated to charity when they fall off. The Tropical Star returned to the dock to bring us back to the marina and our cars for the return to Tara Woods. It was a pleasant and fun day for all. Thanks to all the plans made by Barb Pollitt, president of the Mid-Atlantic Club. ~ Bill Beaulieu

FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou Hopefully all are settled in for the summer, either up north or here in Tara Woods. Recap of Rent Negotiation - On April 17, 2018 the Rent Committee met with Gena Paugh, Regional Manager of Hometown America and Darlene Bradley Community Manager. After the meeting our committee concluded that Hometown is in compliance with Florida Statutes as it relates to our rent increase. Hometown did agree to share the inventory of items that make up the ad valorem tangible property tax. A major part of the meeting was devoted to the fitness center location letters received by Gena Paugh and Hometown CEO Steven Braun. As a result of your many, many letters the use of the Meeting Room and Verandah for a fitness center is ON HOLD. THANK YOU to all who took the time to send in letters. The Committee had the opportunity to show Regional Manager Gena where we think the fitness

center should be located. This proposed location is a win-win for current and future residents. It highlights the best of Tara Woods and will significantly enhance our evolving recreational campus area. We thank Gena for taking the time to examine the proposed stand-alone site and listen to our thoughts concerning the future of Tara Woods. Again, I want to thank the Committee: Don Boehlke, John Hoos, Joe Bevilaqua, and Frank Millette, for their participation and insights. The Committee would like to give a big thank you to George Sullivan who recently stepped down as Chairman of the Committee. His leadership and dedication to the process was invaluable. HEADS UP – Gail Sanfilippo our Columns Distribution Manager will be moving out of our community. Gail has done an excellent job of setting up delivery routes, attracting and working with a team of volunteers to deliver The Columns. Gail

provides The Columns to the delivery people in an accurate and timely manner. We thank her and will miss her. We wish Gail, Tony and Casey well! Sue Uccello has volunteered to assume the Distribution responsibilities. We look forward to working with Sue. She can be reached at 599-4264. DID YOU KNOW THAT – We have a Computer Club right here in Tara Woods that offers free computer classes on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the summer months at 10:30 AM. The classes are led by Dave St. Laurent, “The Computer Tutor”. Dave has over 50 years’ experience with computers and has seen it all. During the summer season the classes are held at Dave’s house at 19729 Kara Circle. All are welcome. The summer is a great time to try it out. The classes are less structured and more relaxed. Bring your laptop and your questions... get answers plus free coffee and donuts. Lou Dunning, Vice President

MANAGER’S CORNER This time of year, all of our snowbirds have flown the nest back to their home states... We take this time of the year to take care of major projects in the community. Cleaning, painting, repairing, and replacing. Before most of our residents departed, we had a great turnout for our Easter Dinner and then of course, the great Kentucky Derby Party with prizes for best hats for men and women, what a day of

fun. Then came our Memorial Day Picnic of hamburgers and hot dogs sponsored by Bill Black and friends. July always promises to have a fantastic turnout for the July 4th picnic with lots of good food, games and prizes. We close July with a National Hot Dog Day gathering on July 22nd. Our planning for hurricane season starts in June and July, and as it approaches we make sure our residents have a plan prior to any storm.

This is done every year to keep our residents prepared and safe! After our July Hot Dog Day Picnic, August is a quiet month. We have no major events other than Bingo every Tuesday night at 7:00 PM and a movie night. Darlene Bradley “Don’t let yesterday take up too much today.” Will Rogers

This is one of the exotic places in the world we have always wanted to explore. In July we will get to have fun at the 4th of July picnic. We hope to see you all there. If you are taking a vacation away from here, have fun. If you’re staying close to home, enjoy Tara Woods. Either way, have a great summer. Life is full of drama, why not join the club? Kentucky Derby Day – Tara Woods Style A large enthusiastic group gathered in the Clubhouse to watch the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby on the big screen. It was pouring down rain at Churchill Downs. Not to be outdone, the sky opened up and it poured down rain here in Tara Woods. You could see the ladies and gents on the screen in their finest outfits, complete with hats. Nothing compared to the vast number of wonderfully creative hats that filled our Clubhouse. Before the race, all were treated to mint juleps complete with fresh mint leaves. This was followed by a buffet longer than the home stretch at Churchill Downs. After giving serious, or not so serious, thought to the twenty horses, folks had the opportunity to make their wagers and watch the race. It was an altogether great party! Lou Dunning

MIDWEST CLUB Hello everyone, By this time our snowbirds have made their way north. Hopefully everyone’s trip was uneventful and you’re enjoying time with family and friends. I would like to thank all of the outgoing officers for the wonderful job they have done the last three years--Arlene Green, Art Frederick and Don Buechner.

To all our members, the new board members have been meeting and we have a lot of things planned for next season. Hopefully fun will be had by all. For our year-round members, keep an eye out for an email; we have a couple of things happening this summer. Thank you Rick Lubich, Club president

NEW ENGLAND CLUB

7-8/18

It is with a heavy heart that the New England Club must say goodbye to 2 of its long time and favorite mem-

bers, Dennis and Bev Bayer. Dennis and Bev have been Club members for as many years as I can remember. Bev has served as Membership/Secretary for the last several years as well as serving as a league officer which as we all know, involves a lot of hard work and dedication to the Club. Dennis has served on every committee that there was to serve

on, is an original “party-ops” man, and never shied away from any task put before him. We wish you sunny days in Connecticut, close to your family and friends. May God Bless you with good health and happiness. You will be missed. Judy Machnicz

BAILEY SPEAKS really feel great on my feet! Anyway, it’s June, and God willing, my 13th birthday will be on June 10th. So, it’s my party and I’ll howl if I want to, howl if I want to! If any other four-footed along with my two-legged friends have birthdays this month - paws up and have a great day! Don’t eat too much cake and make sure it’s not chocolate, because chocolate is a no-no for us! Father’s Day is also in June so Happy Father’s Day to all you Fathers out there. Even though my father is long gone, I feel I have his genes to keep me going. Well, this month in Bailey Speaks, I’m addressing things you can do with your four-footed friends since summer is upon us, and like I said before, our snowbirds have come and gone and hopefully they make it back safely. Here are some activities to do with us other than playing in our dog park at Tara Woods. 1) Every 2nd Friday of each month, starting at 6:00 PM at the Bell Tower Shops, they have Yappy Hour, with vendors and live music

until 8:00 PM. Also, restaurants Cru and Shoeless Joe’s (across the street) are pet friendly restaurants where you can eat outside with your pet. 2) If you are interested in fishing, camping, hunting or other outdoor activities, and need outdoor equipment, put us in a shopping cart and wheel us to Bass Pro Shops at Gulf Coast Town Center. 3) Miracle Baseball at Hammond Stadium at 6:00 PM, weather permitting, Bark in the Park / Dog Daze of Summer, where your admission includes you and your pet, to enjoy the Miracles play ball. Scheduled games are May 19th, June 30th, July 21st and August 18th – all on Saturday nights. Vendors are there with free samples – yum yum – if not, give your sad eyes to your master and just maybe they’ll buy you a burger or a hotdog. 4) There are dog parks and beaches other than Tara Woods dog park. a) Fisherman’s Village, Punta Gorda b) Estero Community Park c) Bonita Beach Dog Park and Beach – (In which, there is an off-

leash beach playground at New Pass - Bonita Springs.) Just to name a few areas. *Just a reminder, like our dog park, please pick up after us. As you well know, June starts hurricane season, which lasts until the end of November. If you are in need of a motel stay for you and your pet, here are a few pet friendly motels: 1) Four Points Sheraton 2) La Quinta 3) Best Western I’ll try to scratch behind my ears for more updates when available along with other activities, if you

happen to run into me and my master. You won’t get an issue in July, because we only have two papers that come out during the summer – June and August. Remember July 4th is Independence Day, celebrating 242 years of our freedom. A reminder about fireworks – please keep us in a quiet sheltered place and away from the scary sounds of fireworks. Lastly, hot summer weather is here, and not only in Florida. Please check your pet’s water dish often. Until then, Happy Tails Bailey

11/18

Hi everybody, this is Bailey. First of all - paws up, plus a great big THANK YOU to my two-legged friends along with my fellow footed furry friends for the get well cards and also coming to see me when out and about and asking how I’m doing. (Sounds like Joey from reruns of Friends, and talk show host Wendy Williams saying, “How you doin’?” Ha! Ha!) I’m on the mend - slowly but steadily recovering and continuing with my cancer treatments until August. My vet feels I’m doing good mainly because I have been eating, drinking and taking my medication. If you have seen me out and about, I have lost hair on my chest, legs, face and feet and sides, along with my tail. My vet says maybe my hair will grow back, but not on my legs and feet, but there is always hope. In the meantime, my master – the two legged one I live with, has found me baby booties at the Dollar Tree for my feet, so I don’t have to suffer going through the hot dirt and grass in the dog park or on short walks around the house. Boy, they

The stakes are very low. Call Polly Brown, 731-1614, if you’d like to join us – she’ll fill you in on the details or answer any questions you may have.

COMPUTER CLUB The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes and is open to all residents and visitors. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. We are meeting at my home during the Summer season like we have in past years. These meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 10:30 AM. They offer a more relaxed atmosphere, with coffee and donuts provided for free. We normally cover a limited number of topics in this off-season and go into greater detail. My home is located in the northwest quarter of the park, at 19729 Kara Circle. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it.

I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. I live in Tara Woods

and serve all of North Fort Myers and Cape Coral. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I’m looking forward to seeing you! Dave St. Laurent, The Computer Tutor

What Should You Look For In An Annual Financial Review? Given the complexities of the investment world, you might consider working with a financial professional to help you move toward your goals, such as a comfortable retirement. You’ll want to establish good communication with whomever you choose, and you should meet in person at least once a year to discuss your situation. At these annual reviews, you’ll want to cover a variety of topics, including these: Your portfolio’s progress – Obviously, you will want to discuss how well your investments are doing. Of course, you can follow their performance from month to month, or even day to day, by reviewing your investment statements and online information, but at your annual meeting, your financial professional can sum up the past year’s results, highlight areas that have done well or lagged, and show you how closely your portfolio is tracking the results you need to achieve your long-term goals. Your investment mix – Your mix of investments – stocks, bonds, government securities and so on – helps determine your success as an investor. But in looking at the various investments in your portfolio, you’ll want to go beyond individual gains and losses to see if your overall mix is still appropriate for your needs. For example, is the ratio of stocks to bonds still suitable for your risk tolerance? Over time, and sometimes without you taking any action, this ratio can shift, as often happens when stocks appreciate so much that they now take up a larger percentage of your portfolio than you intended – with a correspondingly higher risk level. If these unexpected movements occur, your financial professional may recommend you rebalance your portfolio to align it more closely with your goals and risk tolerance. Changes in your family situation – A lot can happen in a single year. You could have gotten married, divorced or remarried, added a child to your family or moved to a new, more expensive house – the list can go on and on. And some, if not all, of these moves could certainly involve your financial and investment pictures, so it’s important to discuss them with your financial professional. Changes in your goals – Since your last annual review, you may have decided to change some of your long-term goals. Perhaps you no longer want to retire early, or you’ve ruled out that vacation home. In any case, these choices may well affect your investment strategies, so it’s wise to discuss them. Changes in the investment environment – Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to establish a long-term investment strategy based on your individual goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, and stick with this basic strategy regardless of the movements of the financial markets or changes in the economy. Still, this doesn’t mean you should never adjust your portfolio in response to external forces. For instance, if interest rates were to rise steadily over a year’s time, you might want to consider some changes to your fixed-income investments, such as bonds, whose value will be affected by rising rates. In any case, it’s another thing to talk about during your annual review. These aren’t the only elements you may want to bring up in your yearly review with your financial professional – but they can prove to be quite helpful as you chart your course toward the future.
