They Did It!!!
They Won!!!
The Magic Softball Team Celebrated Monday Night, March 9th With Their First WIN In The League! You might have heard the car horns beeping Monday night, March 9th, as the Magic Softball Team came through the front gate. THEY WON!!! Actual “Magic” was with the team who WON their first game in their two seasons of play (15 to 14). They have been improving their skills with each game, giving hope to all who were in the bleachers. In past games, they had been coming so close, but unfortunately wound up losing. That Monday night, coming from behind, they brought home a WIN. You should have heard the roar of the crowd and the team all the way from Punta Gorda. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE TEAM!!! You greatly deserve it. Also, congratulations to all who supported the team each game with their encouragement, energy and enthusiasm.

COLUMNS STAFF
From the President It was good to see so many of you at our March membership meeting. Celeste was pleased to start passing out our new membership cards. This is a good way to find out if you have paid your dues for this year and will serve as a reminder for next year. The Board is considering other ways these cards would be to your advantage. If you have any suggestions, we’d be glad to hear them. Celeste will have them with her at Saturday Coffee and possibly at Tuesday Bingo. You can always give her a call to make arrangements to get yours. In this issue of the Columns, you will see a meeting being called by the Appreciation Weekend Committee. At thirty years old, this community is
aging, along with its residents. The Committee is looking for input as to how Appreciation Weekend will best serve the residents in the future. Here is your opportunity to voice your opinions and concerns. It would be helpful to have some new residents attend to bring their perspective to the table. Please plan to attend if you have any interest in the future of this event. April should find us warming up and slowing down - a little. There are still State Club events to attend, Saturday Coffee and Pancake Breakfasts into May. Easter dinner at the Clubhouse on Sunday, April 5th is always a nice gathering and a great way to celebrate Easter with friends. The Garden Club is having their
luncheon and is also sponsoring an outing to a local nursery that gives informative and educational tours. Watch the bulletin board for more information on these and other events happening in April and May. If you are heading north, don’t forget to visit our website at twha.us for the latest Columns and other Tara Woods information. Happy Easter and Happy Spring!

BOXES FOR THE MILITARY The Inspirations group wants to thank everyone who contributed to our project of sending boxes of cookies and treats to our service men and women. Many were very generous and it is appreciated. Also, we want to thank the Tennis Association for their offer of funds if more was needed for the expenses. They wanted to support the troops and we thank them for their kind offer. Also, a big thank you to everyone who
baked cookies and helped pack the boxes. I’m sure those who received the boxes will appreciate not only the contents but the knowledge that we are thinking of them, and appreciate what they are doing. Thank you, all! Inspirations Group, Barbara Miller and Beth Ferris

FMO NEWS WHAT DID YOU DO WITH THE $500 FMO SAVED YOU LAST YEAR? That is the question FMO President John Salvucci asked at the February District 7 Meeting held here at Tara Woods. I hope you were able to attend that meeting; the speakers were very informational and the cookies provided by the Ladies were the best. Let’s talk a bit about that $500. Where does it come from? First of all, FMO has headed off a sales tax attempt on your lot rent twice in the past 10 years. If you take the average monthly rent at Tara Woods times 6% you have a nice piece of change. Secondly, FMO got the Tangible tax we used to pay removed several years ago (for my home that amounted to $80 - $90 per year). Thirdly, the Bingo industry keeps trying to impose on us the $1,500 fee
that they must pay annually so we can operate Bingo in our parks; FMO always blocks that. These savings go on to you year after year, to both FMO members and non-members alike. It just makes sense that we should all do our part in supporting FMO by being members. $25 per year is only a small part of that $500 savings to give back. Many thanks to the almost 170 Tara Woods FMO Members we now have. KEEP IT UP!!! If you are not yet an FMO member, this part is for you: you can obtain an application in several ways, 1) on the Clubhouse bulletin board, 2) on the web at twha.org, 3) from an FMO member (there is an application in every FMO magazine), and 4) by calling me, Bud Snell, 567-2712.
SUNSHINE AND SYMPATHY Condolences to the friends and family of Jean Beecham and Barbara Filkins who passed away this past month and to Joan Johnson on the loss of her sister and to Gene Johnson on the loss of his brother. A speedy recovery is wished for Joan Johnson, Gene McRae and Marilyn Workman and others in the community who are struggling with health issues. Stay well! Nancy Wuebbeler, 288-5778

TENNIS NEWS TENNIS ASSOCIATION MEETING The Tennis Association held their last meeting of the season on Sunday, March 22nd, at 5:45 PM. An election of officers to serve on the Tennis Association Board was held at that meeting. The results of that election will be reported in the next issue of the Columns. The offices that were voted on were President, Vice President, and Secretary. The Treasurer position was not up for re-election, so Carole Nevue will continue as our Treasurer. Thanks went out to Gary Sponseller who did a very good job of repairing the sliding doors that cover the Tennis Bulletin Boards. Don Boehlke was thanked for lubricating the latches on the gates by Court 1
and Court 4. The dates for next season’s Round Robins were discussed. The dates of November 22nd, January 24th, February 21st, and March 20th were requested. We will post the approved dates on the Tennis Bulletin Board and will list them in the Columns when we get confirmation. ROUND ROBIN The third Round Robin of the season was held on Sunday, February 22nd. Only 23 people signed up to play in that Round Robin, so we had a rather small turnout of tennis players. Everyone seemed to enjoy their matches; you could hear a lot of friendly banter and laughing on the courts. The weather had been cool during the week, but the sun
was shining brightly on that Sunday and it turned out to be a pretty warm day on the tennis courts. Bea Sponseller provided a nice assortment of courtside snacks and drinks for everyone to enjoy between their matches. The dinner was hosted by Val and Paul Roderick, with help from Mary Ellen and Jon Gold. They served Russian Chicken Pierogis, cole slaw, and dessert. The meal was enjoyed by 27 people. The last Round Robin of the season was scheduled for Sunday, March 22nd. Carole and Frank Neveu volunteered to serve the dinner, and Kathy Rafferty volunteered to handle the courtside snacks. We will give a report of that Round Robin in the May/June edition

While playing the “Hit the Chairs” game, Charles hit 2 tennis balls in the teapot which was sitting on one of the chairs. This rewarded him with 25 bonus points for each ball he hit in. He just narrowly missed putting a third ball in, with the ball rolling around the rim but not going into the teapot. Even though we couldn’t award a prize for the individual games, here are the results: Hole in the Board Game: Four people did manage to hit 4 tennis balls through that small hole in the board. Warren Engel, Glen Fisher, Frank Neveu, and Dakota Windancer, each got 4 on Friday. Warren got 4 again on Saturday. Hit the Chairs Game: Hitting a chair earned the player 5 points. George Johnston earned 50 points, with 25

APPRECIATION WEEKEND The weather for Appreciatin Weekend didn’t start out too well. It was cool and breezy on Friday, but it warmed up nicely on Saturday, for both the parade and the games. As for the three games played on our tennis courts, we had 53 players on Friday and 65 players on Saturday. The scores from all three games had to be totaled to determine that day’s winner. The overall women’s winner on Friday was Carole Neveu. Actually she and Gigi Fisher tied with 31 points each. As we could not have two women winners, Carole and Gigi had to play a tie-breaker, which meant playing the three games again; as it turned out,
they tied again with 27 points each. Rather than play the games a third time, Carole and Gigi decided to flip a coin to determine the winner who would be announced at the Saturday evening festivities. Carole won the coin toss, so she was credited with the win. She received a scratchoff card which she and Gigi had decided to share if there was any money to be won. The women’s winner on Saturday was Sue Yohn with 38 points. Thankfully, there was no tie-breaker needed to determine Saturday’s winner, as Sue had quite a few points over the next closest player. The overall men’s winner on Friday was Dakota Windancer with 43 points. Saturday’s men’s winner was Charles Engel (brother of Warren) with 61 points.

points of that coming from getting 1 ball in the teapot. We had three players who got 40 points; they were Dale Holat, Eddie Amarando, and Larry Baldwin. Sorry to say, but the women didn’t do so well. Tennis Bowling Game: Contrary to last year when quite a few people knocked over 9 of the 10 bowling pins, no one this year came even close to that. Three people knocked down just 7 of the bowling pins; they were Gigi Fisher, Dale Holat, and Dakota Windancer. So, Appreciation Weekend is over for another year. We thank all the workers who volunteered their time to make the games possible. Your help certainly was appreciated. TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE The Women’s SWIFT League, which ended its sea-
son on Thursday, March 12th, was comprised of eight teams from the surrounding communities. The Tara Woods Angels took first place in the league, and the Tara Woods Jewels took second place. Both teams actually wrapped up first and second place a few weeks before the end of the season. Our two teams were far enough ahead of the rest of the league that they couldn’t be bumped out of the top two spots. That’s pretty impressive! After the first week of tennis – way back on November 6th – the Angels and two other teams finished the day with 5 wins and only 1 loss. After the second week, the Angels were alone in first place, and they stayed there for the entire season. It only took three weeks of tennis for the Tara Woods Jewels to claim second place
– and each week their win/loss record put more distance between them and the other six teams. Congratulations to both teams on this awesome record! It’s great to have both Tara Woods teams at the top of the Women’s league. – Linda Engel

MEN’S LEAGUE Red League Our 6 matches with Sabal Springs on March 4th were very close but we fell short, losing 5 sets and winning just 1. Better luck next time!!! – Glen Fisher White League It’s been a great year for the White Team and it appears that we will finish this year solidly in the middle of the pack of eight teams. What more could we ask for – we had good exercise, lots of laughs, great fans, and lots of liquid cheer. I was a bit disappointed with our
cheerleaders. I won’t mention any names but their initials are A.B. and L.L. (you guess who they are). One of them forgot the pom-poms and the other one decided to attend a Red Hat luncheon. Can you imagine!! Again, many thanks to our loyal fans; you are part of our team. Gerry Gagnon
Blue League The best information available (as of March 6th) is that we will remain in third place, a point or two behind the second place team. The league’s official scorekeeper is shoveling snow up north and will not return until next week. So, a more accurate accounting of scores will take place at that time. We have three more weeks to play and the season will then be over. – Bill Powers Submitted by Linda Engel Pictures by Mike Burk

NEW ENGLAND The New England Club Bon Voyage party, or as most of us like to refer to it. The Yankees – Red Sox game, will be held on Friday, April 10th. We have outgrown the space that Beef O’ Brady’s provides us, so this year’s party is being held at All Star Lanes on Tamiani Trail in North Fort Myers. They have a private party room off the front right of the building which should provide ample room for our festivities. The Club will pick up the tab for Beer, Wines, Soda, and Coffee. The game starts at 7:05

TREASURES OF TARA
At Tara Woods we have a couple who are extraordinary! Jackie Sullivan is a Mighty Mouse, quiet, humble, and the catalyst behind her powerful, successful husband George. The Sullivans have been at Tara Woods since 1997. Before that, they lived in Grand Island, New York.
George has a long resume of accomplishments. He worked for many years at the Buffalo News, retiring as the Director and V.P. of Circulation. He was the Union Negotiator and President of the New York State Circulation Association. For 12 years he was Councilman for Grand Island, 6 years being the Deputy Supervisor. When asked to run for Congress, he declined in favor of time with his family. In George’s spare time he was very active with the Knights of Columbus, being a 4th Degree Knight and Grand Knight. With the help of the Knights he was instrumental in building a Catholic School, a Convent, Rectory, and finally a 29,700 square foot Church. George also worked for the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury for Tax Payers Advocacy in Florida, and was Chairman of 7 States for the Advocacy Commission. While George was busy with all the above, his wife Jackie was the successful heartbeat of the successful family. They raised 5 children: 1 girl, Jackie
(a nurse), and 4 boys, Mike (a newspaper executive), Paul (a doctor), Brian (a lawyer), and Jeff (a Homeland Security supervisor of 4 Western NY State Crossings). They also have 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Jackie stayed close to her children by being the School Crossing Guard for 17 years. With 4 boys, she was busy!!! George found time to coach Little League, be a Scout Leader and together the family boated, skied and played tennis and hockey. When their only daughter, Jackie, was stricken with cancer and passed away in 2013, it was their strong faith and love from their sons, family and friends that carried them through the intense pain. George helped start the first Softball team at Tara Woods, was President of the Tennis League and Captain of a Tennis Team. They also helped establish (with 3 other couples) the Wednesday Happy Hour Club. For 5 years George was Chairman of the Rent Negotiation Committee,
and President of the Homeowners Association in 2013. He was also very involved in the Guardian Ad Litem Committee, helping abused children identified by the Lee County Courts. When he retired and came to Florida, the Vicar General heard of George’s accomplishments and asked him to be Finance Director responsible for building the present St. Therese Church. Jackie was also involved for 5 years on the Activities Committee, played tennis (she was responsible for naming the “Angels” team), as well as being our very own “Snow White” in the Appreciation Weekend Parade this year. They are also both members of the New Image Chorus. Jackie and George have been married for 52 years and have received 3 Papal Blessings from 3 different Popes, two of which are now Saints. I guess the blessings have helped the Sullivans be such a blessing to so many others. Thank you Jackie and George! Mary Nothnagel

TESTIMONIAL: Phil - Tara Woods on his Installation: “I would like to thank you and your staff for the great job installing my new air conditioner. After getting quotes from two other companies, including the company that had been servicing my old unit, I thought you should know why I chose your company. It wasn’t based on price alone, even though your quote was extremely competitive. Custom Cooling was recommended by many folks in my community along with a neighbor that handles the heating and cooling at Edison College. When you first visited us for the initial quote, you were the only representative that thoroughly explained all options. I found your sales presentation both informative and honest. Having been an auto dealer for almost 30 years, I appreciate that type of business approach. The installation was fast and neat with no surprises. Please feel free to use me as a reference. I will let everyone know why I chose Custom Cooling. Thank you for your admirable business ethics.!”

So Ladies and Gentlemen….. if you are reading this Column, I certainly hope that you came and were part of the show last month, either on stage, back stage, helping somehow, or in the audience. If not, you missed a fun time. Thanks again to all who helped in any way. If you see any of our performers or crew around the community, stop and tell them how much you enjoyed their hard work. I know that I could never do what the performers do on stage. I give them a lot of credit for putting themselves out there to entertain us. Let us know if you are thinking about joining our group. Perhaps we could start you out with a small part in the next production. Please consider exploring the creative side of your brain and join the Entertainers. Now the actors get to take a break. The Directors are beginning to work on the show for next year, and I am sure that it will be entertaining. Some of our community will be heading away from us soon, so drive safe, arrive safe and have a great summer. For the rest of us, especially those of us who stay here year round, we are looking forward to less traffic, fewer crowds and more chances to get to know one another. How Should You Respond To Higher Interest Rates? If the Federal Reserve (Fed) raises short-term interest rates this year, as many financial professionals predict, what will it mean to you? As a consumer, you might experience the “ripple” effects if long-term interest rates eventually follow suit, affecting mortgages and other loans. But as an investor, you might quickly feel the impact of a move by the Fed — especially if you own bonds. In fact, the value of your existing bonds might drop noticeably if interest rates were to rise. That’s because no one will give you full price for your lowerpaying bonds when new bonds are being issued at a higher interest rate. So if you want to sell your bonds, you might have to take a loss on them. Of course, if you were always planning to hold your bonds until maturity, you might not be overly concerned with falling prices. Assuming your bond issuers don’t default — and defaults are rare among “investment grade” bonds — you will continue collecting regular interest payments until your bonds mature, at which point they will be redeemed at full face value. Furthermore, just owning bonds can help you diversify your portfolio, which might otherwise be dominated by stocks and therefore be susceptible to big swings in value. (While diversification can help reduce the effects of volatility, it can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) However, it’s still useful to be aware of the effects of rising interest rates on bonds of different maturities. Typically, when rates rise, long-term bonds will fall in value more than short-term bonds. So if you only owned long-term bonds, your portfolio could take a bigger hit than if you owned both short- and longterm bonds. Again, this might not be a big issue if you intend to hold bonds until they mature — but if your plans change, a drop in value in your bond holdings could be cause for concern. Furthermore, if you just owned long-term bonds, your money would be tied up, thereby not allowing you to take advantage of newly issued, higher-paying bonds. You can help protect yourself against the potential negative effects of rising interest rates by incorporating a “fixed-income ladder” in your portfolio. You can build this ladder by purchasing fixed-income securities — such as corporate or municipal bonds — in various maturities. With your ladder in place, a portion of your portfolio matures at regular intervals. Consequently, you can benefit from any increase in interest rates by reinvesting your maturing bonds at the higher rate. And if interest rates should fall, you still have your longer-term bonds working for you. (Generally, longer-term vehicles pay higher rates than shorter-term ones.) Even if the Fed does raise short-term rates in 2015, it doesn’t necessarily signal the start of a trend. Interest rate movements are notoriously hard to predict — and you probably won’t help yourself by trying to “time” your investment decisions based on where rates may be heading. But techniques such as a fixed-income ladder can work for you in all interest rate environments. So as you think about how you’ll invest in bonds in the years ahead, keep this type of “all-weather” strategy in mind. It may be able to help you keep the “guesswork” to a minimum. As I write this article, our ladies are busy baking cookies for our military care boxes. Ladies, “Thank you” for your faithfulness to this worthy project. Thanks also to those who made donations for our postage. Let’s remember to be faithful in praying for our men and women in our military. These are perilous times. Many of them put their lives in danger every day. We are glad to have many of our snowbirds with us until after Easter since it comes on the first Sunday in April this year. Have you noticed that the budding cones in the tops of our pine trees are in the shape of crosses? It happens every year around Easter time. Interesting isn’t it! Have a great spring and rejoice as we enjoy all the beautiful flowering plants and trees that surround us here in Southwest Florida.

that damn door Glad to know this, at least there is a reason for it. Ever walk into a room with some purpose in mind, only to completely forget what that purpose was? Turns out, doors themselves are to blame for these strange memory lapses. Psychologists at the University of Notre Dame have discovered that passing through a doorway triggers what’s known as an Event Boundary in the mind, separating one set of thoughts and memories from the next. Your brain files away the thoughts you had in the previous room and prepares a blank slate for the new locale. Thank goodness for studies like this. It’s not our age, it’s that damn door!!
