FROM THE BOARD ROOM BY LOU As some of you know, my wife Pat and I are train enthusiasts. Last year we covered nearly 7,000 miles on trains here in the U.S. We have also been fortunate enough to ride trains on five continents. We have yet to do Asia and Antarctica when they get a train. All trains are led by an engine and our favorites are steam engines. They seem so simple (heat water, water turns to steam, steam propels the driving mechanism). Actually, it is far more complex. Together there are literally hundreds of parts that work to move the train forward. You might compare a steam locomotive to our Homeowners Association. On the surface it seems pretty simple. However, in reality, it takes hundreds of dedicated volunteers to move our Homeowners Association forward – resident volunteers who serve to

make all our lives better and allow all of us to enjoy this special lifestyle. You know who you are!!! We are blessed to have this incredible, large cadre of folks who are willing to volunteer their time and expertise on behalf of others. Thank you! Thank you! Just like riding trains, there is always more to do. If you are looking to make a difference in our community, contact me or any other Board Member. All are welcome. Let’s talk! HEADS UP – Join in with the Thursday Water Volleyball group. It’s a splashing good time on Thursdays at 5:30 PM in the lap pool. No experience necessary. For more information contact Barbara Simonson at 541-840-4430. Go ahead, take the plunge. DID YOU KNOW THAT – As a resident you are able to

reserve the Clubhouse for private parties, based on availability. Contact our Clubhouse Scheduler, Judy Lanpher, at 386-795-5555 jlanphertw@yahoo.com for more information. CALENDAR HOUSEKEEPING – If your plans change and you need to cancel or move an event that has already been approved and scheduled, please contact Scheduler Judy Lanpher at 386-795-5555 or jlanphertw@ yahoo.com and Web Master Bill Loveday at 313-220-0622 or bill@twhoa.net. This will help ensure that the calendar and website have the most accurate information. Thank you.

So, Ladies and Gentlemen...well here we are in the middle of the summer. For some it is a great time to be out enjoying the heat and humidity. But for others, time is appreciated indoors and relishing the conditioned air. Whichever you do in life – ENJOY – this is not a dress rehearsal, make it the best you can. Speaking of the best you can – this is an opportunity to give recognition to those who work with the Entertainers, those who are not seen under the lights during our production in March in the Clubhouse when we put the play on stage. I am listing as many of the volunteer activities that I can think of; can you see yourself helping us?

Estate Plans Can Help You Answer Questions About the Future The word “estate” conjures images of great wealth, which may be one of the reasons so many people don’t develop estate plans – after all, they’re not rich, so why make the effort? In reality, though, if you have a family, you can probably benefit from estate planning, whatever your asset level. And you may well find that a comprehensive estate plan can help you answer some questions you may find unsettling – or even worrisome. Here are a few of these questions: What will happen to my children? With luck, you (and your co-parent, if you have one) will be alive and well at least until your children reach the age of majority (either 18 or 21, depending on where you live). Nonetheless, you don’t want to take any chances, so, as part of your estate plans, you may want to name a guardian to take care of your children if you are not around. You also might want to name a conservator – sometimes called a “guardian of the estate” – to manage any assets your minor children might inherit. Will there be a fight over my assets? Without a solid estate plan in place, your assets could be subject to the time-consuming, expensive – and very public – probate process. During probate, your relatives and creditors can gain access to your records, and possibly even challenge your will. But with proper planning, you can maintain your privacy. As one possible element of an estate plan, a living trust allows your property to avoid probate and pass quickly to the beneficiaries you’ve named. Who will oversee my finances and my living situation if I become incapacitated? You can build various forms of protection into your estate planning, such as a durable power of attorney, which allows you to designate someone to manage your financial affairs if you become physically or mentally incapacitated. You could also create a medical power of attorney, which allows someone to handle health care decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so yourself. Will I shortchange my family if I leave significant assets to charities? Unless you have unlimited resources, you’ll have to make some choices about charitable gifts and money for your family. But as part of your estate plans, you do have some appealing options. For example, you could establish a charitable lead trust, which provides financial support to your chosen charities for a period of time, with the remaining assets eventually going to your family members. A charitable remainder trust, by contrast, can provide a stream of income for your family members for the term of the trust, before the remaining assets are transferred to one or more charitable organizations. As you can see, careful estate planning can help you answer many of the questions that may be worrying you. Be aware, though, that certain aspects of estate planning, especially those related to living trusts and charitable trusts, can be complex, so you should consult your estate-planning attorney or qualified tax advisor about your situation. But once you’ve got your plans in place, you should be able to face the future with greater clarity and confidence.

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors are not estate planners and cannot provide tax or legal advice.

GARDEN CLUB

As a reminder, our next meeting is Saturday, October 12th. Please mark your calendars. This is our only meeting before the Craft Fair and this year we have another meeting on Saturday, November 9th, before the Fashion Show. Anyone interested in joining or just helping out, please come to these meetings. You don’t have to be a member to volunteer to help. The Craft Fair on Saturday, November 2nd, is open to the public, with lots of talented vendors selling their handmade items. We will need volunteers on Friday,

November 1st, to set up and again on Saturday, November 2nd. If you are new to Tara Woods, the Fashion Show on Sunday, November 17th, is a Free event; everyone is expected to bring either a salad or a dessert to share, with some members bringing the wine. It’s ALWAYS a fun afternoon. A poster for signing up will be in the Clubhouse in October. We set up for the Fashion Show the morning of the show on Sunday, November 17th, and again volunteers are needed. Again, this year, our models will be wearing the beautiful clothing from Razzle Dazzle, a

wonderful boutique, located at 1335 Cape Coral Parkway East. If you’re shopping there, tell the ladies you are from Tara Woods; they would love to meet you. They are running a 10% off sale and they have Dazzling Deals which run 50-70% off. If you need something special, be sure to check out this store. Please put these dates on your calendar; you do not want to miss them. The Garden Club hopes everyone is having a safe and fun summer.

AUGUST What to Plant Annuals/Bedding plants: The hottest days of summer limit planting to heat-tolerant vinca, coleus, salvia, and celosia. Bulbs: Aztec lily, butterfly lily, walking iris, and spider lily can be planted any time of the year, even late summer. Herbs: Herbs that can be planted from plants (not seeds) include bay laurel, ginger, Mexican tarragon, and rosemary. Vegetables: Start planting eggplant, okra, peppers, pumpkin, squashes, and tomatoes for the fall garden.

What to Do Palms: Check older fronds for yellowing as it may indicate a magnesium or potassium deficiency. Apply an appropriate palm fertilizer. Vegetables: Solarize the vegetable garden for 4–6 weeks in preparation for fall planting if not done in July. Poinsettias: Pinch back poinsettias and mums before the end of the month to allow time for buds to form for winter bloom. Ornamental plants: Fertilize those plants that show signs

of deficiencies. Rapid growth and leaching rains may result in nutrient deficiencies in some plants. Fertilizer Bans: Numerous municipalities in south Florida prohibit the application of fertilizer to lawns and/or landscape plants during the summer rainy season (June–September). See if such an ordinance exists in your area. Annuals/Bedding plants: Remove spent blooms, cut back, and fertilize flowering annuals and perennials to extend the bloom season into the fall months.

SEPTEMBER What to Plant Annuals/Bedding plants: If summer beds need refreshing, try scarlet sage, nasturtium, celosia, and wax begonia for color into fall. Bulbs: Plant gladiolus every 2 weeks to stagger blooming. Stake each plant. Herbs: Plant herbs that tolerate the warm temperatures of early fall, such as Mexican tarragon, mint, rosemary, and basil. Vegetables: September opens the door for more vegetables to plant.

Shrubs: Consider placing native shrubs, like beautyberry, marlberry, firebush, and dahoon holly, where you can view the birds that enjoy them.

but seeds provide a wider variety from which to choose. Perennials and bulbs: Divide and replant perennials and bulbs that have grown too large or need rejuvenation. Add organic matter to planting beds and monitor water needs during establishment. Irrigation: Check that irrigation systems are providing good coverage and operating properly before summer rains taper off. Citrus: Fertilize citrus with a balanced fertilizer either this month or in October. Use controlled-release nitrogen because rain will not leach it from the soil too quickly.

What to Do Lawns: Continue to monitor the lawn for signs of insect damage. Fall armyworms, chinch bugs, mole crickets, and sod webworms are still active this month. Vegetable gardens: Prepare the fall vegetable garden if not done in August. Using transplants from your local garden center will get the garden off to a fast start,

VOLUNTEERING I wanted to share this article with you that appeared in the Manchester Newspaper. I have been a volunteer with the New Horizons homeless shelter for seven years. Last March, New Horizons merged with an organization called Families in Transition. New Horizons has served homeless clients in the city since 1973. Last year, the agency merged with Families in Transition; the

combined organization runs an adult homeless shelter, soup kitchen, food pantry and women’s shelter. The mission of Families in Transition was to provide housing for the needy. Many of the volunteers have found that the current transition was not working, and we saw an increase in the volume of homeless that were hanging out on the streets and hurting the businesses downtown, especially

the restaurants. We have also noticed an increase in the number of young people who are homeless. The article below describes a meeting that the residents and volunteers had to brainstorm potential solutions to help solve the problem and offer a better atmosphere for the homeless. Mike Renzulli

YARD OF THE QUARTER

YARD OF THE QUARTER

CITY RESIDENTS OFFER SOLUTIONS TO CITY’S HOMELESS CHALLENGES By Shawne K. Wickham Families in Transition-New Horizons is seeking the public’s input on its plans to redevelop its Manchester Street facility. The first step was a “charrette” run this weekend by Plan NH, a nonprofit group whose volunteer members include architects, engineers and planners. “Our objective is to create a place at the site to make it more appealing, welcoming and efficient, and to create a cohesive and coordinated neighborhood where New Horizons is a good neighbor and an element of the neighborhood that brings pride,” he said. The plan the group came up with in just 24 hours would use the existing shelter building as a “dry,” or abstinence-based, dormitory for men and women as well as a dining area and a balcony for outdoor dining. The current food pantry would be replaced with a new, separate market where folks could shop and attend culinary classes.

Another new building would house a “wet” shelter — where clients are not required to abstain from alcohol — with separate floors for men and women and space for medical services. Another goal, planners said, is to make the campus more a part of the surrounding neighborhood. They envisioned opening a barber shop and salon in street-level storefronts, installing artwork and murals, and planting trees with benches underneath along the city streets. Local business owners, residents, storekeepers and clients of the shelter weighed in. And while many offered positive suggestions, some complained about the impact of the shelter on their businesses. And that’s what they tried to do, Sturtevant said Saturday. “We thought big,” he said. “Don’t get scared of that. There’s a way to break this down and look at it strategically, so that over time this larger vision can be realized.”

SHILOH SPEAKS

Hello Summer! Yes, the “Dog Days of Summer” are here with temperatures in the high 90’s and the humidity too hot to do any enjoyable outdoor activities; that is unless you enjoy air conditioning as your activity. And who can’t forget we are still in hurricane season mode - till November 30th. Hopefully, everyone is prepared and we can all rest assured that this will be a safe and quiet one. Anyway, let me introduce myself to one and all. My name is SHILOH, and I’m the new Bailey Speaks for future articles called Shiloh Speaks. As you either heard or read in The Columns, we lost our dear friend and my big brother Bailey. Bailey was a West Highland Terrier, and I’m an Australian Silky Terrier. I can be mistaken as a Yorkshire Terrier or “Yorkie”. We are totally different breeds of dog. We each have different traits and characteristics. If I give a good scratch behind the ear and put my best paws forward, I hope you will continue to follow me and my future articles. To acknowledge Bailey, who put up a good year and a half fight against cancer, and through love and compassion of my master and friends, he lived to see what life meant. During this past Spring, I have witnessed several other of my four-footed furry friends who have passed on like Bailey. They belong to Joe & Sue VanSickle’s mixed terrier and Linda & John Hoos’ little Dachshund. And who can forget Ruth and her beloved Schnauzer, Lucy, who each morning and late afternoons you would find them either walking or biking

through Tara Woods neighborhood, and throughout the Fort Myers areas. Let me know if you have had the loss of your canine or feline companion so that they can also be remembered. So, in this segment of Shiloh Speaks, I have pawed about When We Have Lost a Pet, How We Know when to Say Goodbye. When is the right time to make the decision to put your pet down; dogs do not know when the right time is. In the end, you (the master) are the one who will have to make that dreaded decision. It isn’t always easy, but usually we know in our hearts whether our canines or felines are still enjoying life or not, and when we have to let them go. I know my time for pawing today’s article is almost up for this two-month issue. I’ll be back to share more informative articles in the October issue. Hopefully, I will meet you and your master in my travels around Tara Woods. As I end this segment, I’m enclosing this comforting thought from remembering Bailey and others who left our hearts.

The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other. There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth. So each day they run and play until the day comes when One suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears go up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group! You have been seen and when you and your special friend meet, you take them in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and you look once more in the eyes of your trusting pet. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, Never again to be separated.

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It’s called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” Rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. The stakes are very low. Call Polly Brown, 7311614, if you’d like to join us – she’ll fill you in on the details or answer any questions you may have.
