FROM THE PRESIDENT It was a good Fourth of July party, but it couldn’t have happened without all the helpers who gave so much of their time and energy to make it so. I’ll try to list everyone, but there were some people I didn’t even know, who were helping to clean up and put away chairs and tables. The TWHA Board may have sponsored the gathering, but it would not have happened without the help of so many other people. Everyone’s help was greatly appreciated. Selling tickets every Tuesday and Saturday were Ann Millette and Celeste Perre. The homemade potato salad was orchestrated by Donna Phillips with help from Pat Sparany, Pat Dunning, Joanne Byrne and Sue Nedelka. Decorations, kitchen help and chefs included Sue and Bob Uccello, Nancy Wuebbeler, Stu Berman, Chick Jakacki, Polly Brown and Frank Millette. Sound and Lighting support was provided by Wayne Cox and Frank Millette. Table set-up on Friday was done in about 10 minutes, led by Ed Sparany and the horseshoe players. The bean bag games were provided by and set up by Mike Girty. We apologize for not having the Volleyball set up in the lap pool, but we couldn’t find the net and ball! If anyone knows where it may have been stored after Labor Day last

year, please let me know. Lou Dunning, Chuck Poveromo, Jon Porter and others were helping during the party and busy cleaning up afterwards. I really appreciate people stepping up to help when they saw something that needed to be done. Special thanks to George, my husband of 45 years. It was his idea to recognize our anniversary with a “mini” renewal of our vows with “Pastor Polly” presiding. It was very thoughtful and appreciated. More people witnessed these vows than 45 years ago! Many of these people were there Friday and Saturday, working in the kitchen, on the Verandah or wherever needed to make the work lighter and easier. If I missed your name, please let me know. We had a lot of fun working together. So many other people offered to help as well; it was refreshing and encouraging. The “magic” of Tara Woods is alive and well! The weather also held off. While it was a very hot day, the rain and storm didn’t arrive until about 5:30 PM, when everyone was gone. All in all, it was a festive and fun Fourth of July. Thank you, everyone, for your help and support. The work of the Board continues through the summer, even if we don’t meet on a regular basis. Most of the Board members are

in residence this summer, which is good if the need to meet arises. The By-Laws Committee will be meeting in August to start reviewing the By-Laws and preparing to present their recommendations to the Board in October. It’s been a relatively quiet summer so far. We have some new owners and renters here for the summer. I’ve met them at Saturday Coffee, Bingo, Golf and at the July 4th party. Welcome to Tara Woods! If you meet these people while you are out and about in the community, please give them a hearty Tara Woods welcome. Stay dry and cool!

“The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color.”

APPRECIATION WEEKEND UPDATE Our April committee meeting included many resident groups, organization leaders and individuals who suggested that changes be made to the Appreciation Weekend activities. Many ideas and possibilities were discussed. Wayne Cox and Polly Brown, Appreciation Weekend Chair, presented the suggestions to Doug Objartel who then passed them on to Hometown America. The corporate office was receptive to making changes. However, Hometown America is asking that the residents submit a reasonable plan of the changes they would like to make. The committee will present the plan to Doug and he will submit it to corporate for their approval.

Those of you who are requesting changes will have to put your ideas and suggestions together, write them down, and bring them to our first committee meeting on Tuesday, October 13th at 10:00 AM in the Card Room. We will conduct a workshop to finalize a new program for the weekend. Since we will not be meeting until October, the dilemma we now face is that there may not be sufficient time to review, submit and implement all approved changes for the upcoming year. Because of the time constraints, the best option may be to work on a reasonable, well – thoughtout plan for 2017 and proceed with the changes we are able to make for this coming year. We

need your input if changes are to be made! And if these changes require manpower, we need your help! Hometown America will not pay for personnel to man these events! It is common knowledge that Hometown America is not obligated to continue Appreciation Weekend, but they are willing to work with the residents and committee to achieve a reasonable solution. By working together, Tara Woods will continue to be one of the great retirement communities to live in where we can enjoy the resort lifestyle and the amenities it has to offer. Wayne M Cox

Are you ready for the 2015 hurricane season? • Have you visited the TWHA website at www.twha.us to find updated information on what you need to do now and what you need to do in the event of an impending hurricane? On the website home page look for a green bar on the right side of the screen labelled “CERT Information”. Click it and you will find the “Tara Woods Hurricane Preparation Plan”, application forms, website links and other informative literature that you should read and understand to be prepared. • Do you have medical needs that require special attention? If you have special medical needs, you need to apply for the Lee County Special Needs Program to take advantage of the shelter and medical services they offer in the event of an impending hurricane. You must apply now because they cannot accept applications when Lee County is within the “5 day forecast cone” of an approaching hurricane. Once registered, you will be good for the entire year. You will find the application for this on our website or you can fill one out and submit it on-line at the address below. https://www. leeeoc.com/shelterevacuation/ Pages/application_en.aspx You will receive confirmation that you have been registered along with the location of the local shelter to which you’ve been assigned. Once registered, you are not under obligation to use this service but it will be there if you need it. If you have any medical questions regarding this, call our CERT medical coordinator, Lorraine Milligan at 560-7931. • Are you aware of the procedures involving the use of the Tara Woods Clubhouse as a safe haven from a storm?

In the event of a hurricane that is predicted to affect our area, our CERT team will go into action. As the storm approaches, the procedures laid out in the “Tara Woods Hurricane Preparation Plan” will be executed. They will track the storm and provide updates on our preparation via our community TV channel (195). If deemed necessary by the CERT team, the Clubhouse will be prepared to house our residents should they wish to seek shelter from the storm. You should not be in a manufactured home during a hurricane. Although the Clubhouse has been certified to resist damaging winds from category 3 hurricanes, it is suggested that a prediction of anything beyond a category 2 hurricane should be your signal to seek shelter out of the predicted path of the storm. The direction you should travel will be reported on the local news stations. Home-

town America and the CERT team do not accept liability for using the Clubhouse as a safe haven. • Do you have a pet that will require shelter? If we open the Clubhouse for occupancy we will also designate the Crafts Building by the tennis courts as a shelter for your pet. Pets will not be allowed in the Clubhouse. The only exception will be a dog used as a “Service Animal”. Please read the pet guidelines in the “Hurricane Preparation Plan” on the website. If you have questions or concerns regarding the care of your pet during a storm, call Joanne Byrne at 652-0110. Be Smart…Be Prepared! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our CERT Leader, Frank Millette at 543-2954

It is already August: Time does fly when you are having a fun time, and living in Tara Woods is ALWAYS fun. As you can see when you walk past the Butterfly garden, we have completed our new planting, with the help of Aaron Homrighouse (who is looking for work in your garden if you are looking for help), Joanne Byrne, and Carol Shields. I believe the garden is looking good and after a few months of growing, the new plants will spread and give the garden a beautiful new look. We have added to the garden Milkweed, which we know the Monarch butterfly depends on, and the following butterfly friendly plants: Galladia, Lantana and parsley, which is a butterfly favorite. The blue Penta in the front and back of the garden are in memory of Ernie Griffin, who was always so good to the models during the

Fashion Show. We miss him. This year’s Fashion Show will have a new sponsor: Patchington. They are known for contemporary classics of the highest quality with fun colors, comfort and care. They are located in Bell Tower and have a great sales staff to help coordinate and accessorize your wardrobe. You can get a sneak preview of their clothes at Patchington.com. The Fashion Show will be held on Friday, November 13th; please mark your calendars. Our first Garden Club meeting for the new season will be Saturday, October 10th at 9:00 AM (immediately after Coffee). Garden Club members please attend; this is the ONLY meeting before the Fashion Show. If you would like to join or only wish to volunteer to help with the Fashion Show, please attend

this meeting. As always, the Fashion Show is a free event. The sign-up sheet with ALL information will be in the Clubhouse on October 13th. What to do Lawns: Apply controlledrelease nitrogen (not a weed & feed) to St. Augustine and Zoysia lawns this month. Palms: If older fronds are yellowing, a deficiency of magnesium or potassium may be the problem. Vegetables: If not done in July, solarize the vegetable garden for 4-6 weeks in preparation for fall planting. Poinsettias: Pinch back poinsettias and chrysanthemums before the end of the month to allow time for buds to set for winter bloom. Ornamental Plants: Rapid growth and leaching rains may result in nutrient deficiencies in some plants. Fertilize those plants that show signs of deficiencies. Bedding Plants: Remove spent blooms, cut back, and

fertilize flowering annuals and perennials to extend the bloom season into the fall months. September: What to plant Bedding Plants: If summer beds need refreshing, try scarlet sage, nasturtium, celosia, and wax begonia for color into fall. Bulbs: Plant gladiolus every 2 weeks to stagger blooming, staking each plant. Add color, texture and pattern to the garden with the many varieties of Elephant’s Ear (Alocasia) available now. Herbs: Plant herbs that tolerate the warm temperatures of early fall, such as Mexican tarragon, mint, rosemary, and basil. Vegetables: Prepare the fall vegetable garden. Using transplants from your local garden center will get the garden off to a fast start, but seeds provide a wider variety from which to choose. Cool-season crops such

as broccoli, cabbage, collards, and lettuce can be planted now. What to do Lawn Problems: Continue to monitor the lawn for signs of insect damage. Fall armyworms, chinch bugs, mole crickets, and sod webworms are still active this month. Divide Perennials And Bulbs: Divide and replant perennials and bulbs that have grown too large or need rejuvenation. Add organic matter to planting beds and monitor water needs during establishment. Fertilize Lawns: Fertilize bermudagrass with controlledrelease nitrogen (not a weed & feed) this month. Wait until next month to fertilize centipedegrass and bahiagrass lawns. Check Irrigation System: Before summer rains taper off, check that irrigation systems are providing good coverage and operating properly.

Citrus: Fertilize citrus with a balanced fertilizer either this month or in October. Use controlled-release nitrogen as rain will not leach it from the soil too quickly. Shrubs: Consider placing native shrubs like beautyberry, marlberry, firebush, and dahoon holly where you can view the birds that enjoy them.

Excerpts from the University of Florida Gardening Calendar

It’s that time of year again that we need to be mindful of the possibility of a hurricane affecting our community (June 1-Nov 30). Forethought and planning should begin NOW. The following is a list of choices that are available to you. 1. Make plans ASAP as to what you will do in the event of a major storm. The safest and best thing you can do is get out of town! Familiarize yourself with short-term living accommodations North, South and East of Fort Myers NOW. Local news will tell you in which direction you should go to avoid the impact of an approaching storm, and because you have researched your alternatives, you will be prepared to start making reservations. 2. Plan to go to one of the Lee County shelters. A list of

3. The last choice as a safe haven from a storm event can be the Tara Woods Clubhouse. While it is not a certified public shelter, our Tara Woods Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) does prepare the Clubhouse for as much storm protection as possible. If you have a pet and feel you may select this location option, then you must register your pet with CERT NOW. Availability of space will be on a “First Come, First Serve” basis. Please read the CERT Hurricane Plan June 2014 at www.twha.us for registration form and requirements. 4. A choice you should NOT make is to stay in your manufactured home with hurricane force winds predicted. We learned that lesson here in Tara Woods after Hurricane Charlie in 2004 and Hurricane Wilma in 2005.

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB

The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes to all of our residents and their visitors. We cover a wide range of topics, along with general questions and answers. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. During the summer season, we are meeting at my home instead of in the Clubhouse. This is in the Northeast section of the park at 19729 Kara Circle.

These meetings are held on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 10:30 AM. This is a more comfortable setting, and coffee and donuts are available. We will resume our weekly meetings in the Clubhouse at the beginning of November. In May we covered how to work with photographs – everything from selecting a digital camera, organizing and editing your pictures, and printing your photos or using them in projects, through creating slide-show videos with music and narration! In June and July we looked at ebooks, reader devices like Kindle and Nook, and how to work with them on your computer or download them from the Public Library. In future months we will cover a variety of topics, including

Speech (talking to your computer and having it talk back), TV on the Web, social networking (Facebook, Twitter, Skype), and computer security. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to. I will answer any question you care to ask me. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I can help you with any of your computer needs. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St.Laurent, The Computer Tutor

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen….. first I would like to remind everyone about the Entertainers fundraiser, Tara’s Got Talent which will be held on Saturday, November 21st in the Clubhouse. We will all get the opportunity to enjoy the talented people from Tara Woods as they share their talents with us. Tickets will be on sale a month before, so keep us in mind, and let me know if you would like to be one of the people on stage sharing your talent. Summer in Tara Woods gives us the time to relax and kick back a little. The Columns is usually not as full, which allows me the opportunity to relate another story. So sit back, have another cup of coffee, and read on. Let’s go back to the late 60’s (that is the 1960’s). My husband was in the Army stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where we shared an apartment off-base in Hopkinsville. This was the first time I had lived away from home and

was the “lady” of my own house. I was to make my first Thanksgiving Dinner for the two of us. At home, with a family of 6, I assisted my Mom with the preparations, only doing a little of the actual cooking. But that was enough – after all, I owned a Betty Crocker Cookbook. I was ready! We found a 10 lb. whole turkey and purchased the necessary items for the complete traditional Thanksgiving Dinner from his home and mine. When I unwrapped the bird, I was feeling a little less sure of myself. I suddenly was not sure how to proceed. So I grabbed the legs of the naked bird and walked into the room where Lou was watching football and said with barely a voice, “I have no idea how to finish this!” Well, he had absolutely no idea since the closest he ever came was eating the finished product. We went back into the kitchen and we talked through how to proceed. Then, when I felt a little surer of my-

self, I continued on, reading every step of the instructions my Mom had sent me earlier in the week. I did finally complete making our meal with a little of each side of the family being represented on our table. On the table was turkey, gravy, potatoes from both sides of the family, plus all the trimmings. When we sat down we realized that there was enough food to feed several more families. Do you know how long it takes to eat 5 pounds of two types of potato filling? Not to mention 10 pounds of turkey? This turned out to be one of our most favorite memories, our first big holiday together as husband and wife. We have had many holiday meals since with just us, also with family and friends, but none as special as that first one in Kentucky. Pat-one, Stage Manager Entertainers 8-9/15 9/15

A SUMMER MORNING BIKE RIDE WITH CHARLIE

It is 8:00 AM and time for Charlie’s daily bike ride. The temperature is 83 but will be 95 by noon according to the weather person. Charlie (he’s my dog) has a basket, in the back of my three-wheeler, and loves to go. The sky

is a beautiful blue this morning, not a cloud in the sky. It is a quiet summertime day, and the only noise I hear are the many birds chirping and singing away. We first stop at the front lake; Charlie likes to sniff around to see what other dogs have passed by and leaves his own calling card. A few cars pass us by with a quick wave. Along our route we meet several residents out for their morning walk. It hasn’t rained in a few days so the lakes are down a bit; we passed a few turtles already sunning themselves on the shore and upon hearing us, they jump

right back in the water. I haven’t seen the resident alligator this morning, but there were a number of water fowl along the banks of the lakes. The Sandhill Crane family is walking down the road ahead of us; the babies are almost as big as their parents. There are a few people at the pool, probably exercising before it gets too hot. My husband and I try to get to the pool for a few hours each day; it is so relaxing. Shuffleboard and Bocce courts are empty, but the Butterfly Garden has been cleaned out and new flowers planted; it looks lovely. The tennis courts are empty to-

GRADUATING COUSINS

Gloria Conklin is a very proud grandmother as she has 3 grandsons graduating from the same high school class of 2015 at PatchogueMedford High in Medford, Long Island, New York. In the photo are twins, Justin and James Conklin (on the ends) and in the center is their cousin Ryan Conklin. Ryan happens also to be the grandson of Joan and Bill Powers. All 3 are planning to go to different colleges. It is quite an honor to have 3 graduate together. Gloria Conklin

day, but people do play some mornings. On our way back I see a few clouds along the horizon; they will build up as the day goes by and hopefully we will get rain this afternoon. I hear the mowers in the distance – grass grows so fast this time of year. I am coming to the end of our ride;

Charlie is happy to be back home and will flop down and nap most of the day. Looking forward to the return of our winter residents. Joanne Byrne

SURPRISE VISITOR TO CLOISTER STREET The Milligans and Perrys were quite surprised when this 2 ft. alligator came for a visit. He was between the two houses and more scared than we were. He did not move at all until we went inside. Then he moved into the Perrys’ driveway and finally crossed the street where he disappeared behind the houses – not something you see every day. VISIT TO NEW YORK During a recent visit to New York City, Aaron and I saw many highlights. We first visited the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for the Japanese cherry blossoms. Unfortunately, they were waning, but all the other spring trees and bushes were in bloom – dogwood, magnolia, azalea, etc. – as well as tulips of various colors. How I miss the springtime up north! We also went to the Frick Museum just off Central Park East. The art collection is housed in a Gilded Age mansion which is just as beautiful as the art work. Within the collection of paintings and sculpture are works from Renoir, Titan, Hoblein, El Greco, Bellini, and many others. I didn’t think that Aaron would enjoy this part of our trip, but it was one I’d

wanted to do since going to college in the City. To my surprise, Aaron became very interested in the art as well as the sculpture and garden at the Museum. Another highlight we enjoyed was the production of The Phantom of the Opera at the Majectic Theater. This was a show I’d put off for many years since I’d seen the movie many times. But if you haven’t seen it on Broadway or off, the costumes, scenery, and of course the music is positively worth seeing. Have you ever seen a garden in the sky? Well, visit the “High Line”. “The High Line is a 1.45-mile-long New York City linear park built in Manhattan on an elevated section of a disused New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line.”

(from Wikipedia). It is located in the Meat Packing District. At one point you can stop and view the traffic directly over the road below. Coming down from the High Line, we stepped into Chelsea Market. The Market is an enclosed urban food court, shopping mall, office building and television production facility located in the Chelsea. Another spot which I’ve gone by many, many times is Coney Island. This location I’ve heard about since I was a small child living out east on Long Island. The old parachute jump, a landmark, is still there, but unfortunately no longer working. We spent an afternoon walking the boardwalk at Coney Island with many interesting spectacles: There were two men

with boas wrapped over their shoulders and another man with an iguana; a metal band was playing Spanish music while many people were dancing the salsa to it. We ended our walk by, of course, stopping for a Nathan’s hotdog. Now, you could pick any of these prior events to be the highlight of our visit. But the one thing which both Aaron and I thought was outstanding is the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. The 2 reflecting pools and infinity waterfalls are placed on the footprints of each tower with names of those lost etched in stone around the pools. The pools, waterfalls, and “survivor tree” are open to all. “The National September 11 Memorial Museum serves as the country’s principal institu-

tion for examining the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11, 2001.” (Taken from the museum’s website.) This museum took us 3 hours to walk through. If you have a chance, please take the time to go visit. It was well worth the time. Very well done. With sore feet and legs, we returned to Tara Woods very tired, but glad to be back to our friends and community – feeling happy that we had visited many new sites of New York we’d never seen before. BREATHALYZER Late one Friday night the policeman spotted a man driving very erratically through the streets of Dublin. They pulled the man over and asked him if he had been drinking that evening. “Aye, so I have. ‘This Friday, you know, so me and the lads stopped by the pub where I had six or seven pints. And then there was something

called “Happy Hour” and they served these mar-gar-itos which are quite good. I had four or five o’ those. Then I had to drive me friend Mike home and O’ course I had to go in for a couple of Guiness – couldn’t be rude, ye know. Then I stopped on the way home to get another bottle for later.” And the man fumbled

around in his coat until he located his bottle of whiskey, which he held up for inspection. The officer sighed, and said, “Sir, I’m afraid I’ll need you to step out of the car and take a breathalyzer test.” Indignantly, the man said, “Why? Don’t ye believe me??!!!”

one’s got to tell Paddy’s wife... who will it be?” They draw straws, Paul Gallagher picks the short one. They tell him to be discreet, be gentle, don’t make a bad situation worse. ”Discreet? I’m the most discreet Irishman you’ll ever meet. Discretion is me middle name, Leave it to me.” Gallagher goes over to

Murphy’s house and knocks on the door. Mrs. Murphy answers and asks what he wants. Gallagher declares, “ Your husband just lost $500 and is afraid to come home.” “Tell him to drop dead!”, says Murphy’s wife. “I’ll go tell him” says Gallagher.

LOSE 500 Six retired Irishmen were playing poker in O’Leary’s apartment when Paddy Murphy loses $500 on a single hand, clutches his chest and drops dead at the table. Showing respect for their fallen brother, the other five continue playing standing up. Mike O’Connor looks around and asks, “Oh, me boys, some-

No Secrets to Investment

SUCCESS

Many people look for the “secrets” to investment success. Is it timing the market just right? Is it finding those hot stocks or getting in on the “ground floor” of the next big thing? Actually, these types of moves have little relevance to the vast majority of investors — even the most successful ones. So let’s take a look at some steps you can take that can be effective in helping you work toward your financial goals.

• It’s time in the market…not market timing. Some investors think they can succeed at “market timing” — buying when the price is low and selling when the price is high. And this would indeed be a good strategy if they could predict highs and lows. No one can accurately forecast these peaks and valleys, though. So, instead of ducking in and out of the market in a vain attempt to catch the highs and lows, simply stay invested. The more time you spend in the market, the lesser the impact you’re likely to feel from short-term price swings. And if you’re always invested, you’ll always be in a position to benefit from the next market rally.

• It’s “buy and hold” — not “buy and sell.” Even if you aren’t trying to time the market, you may be tempted to buy and sell frequently as you look for new and better opportunities. Yet, this constant buying and selling can be costly. Frequent trading, with all the additions and subtractions from your portfolio, can make it hard for you to follow a consistent, unified investment strategy. You’re better off purchasing quality investments and holding them for the long term, until either your needs change or the investments themselves no longer possess the same attributes they did when you purchased them.

• It’s building a strong foundation — not getting in on the “ground floor.” Many people regret not being one of the initial investors of a company that has done spectacularly well. But most new companies don’t achieve anywhere near that level of success. So, instead of looking for the next big thing on the “ground floor,” try to build a strong “foundation” consisting of a mix of quality investments suitable for your risk tolerance, goals and time horizon. This type of investing may not sound glamorous, but a strong foundation is better equipped than a possibly shaky ground floor to withstand the shifting winds of market forces. It’s cool-headed thinking – not chasing “hot stocks” — If you browse the internet or watch one of the investment shows on cable televi- sion, you are bound to read or hear about “hot” stocks. But by the time the news reaches you, these stocks may already be cooling off. Even more importantly, they might not be right for your needs in the first place. Instead of chasing after hot stocks, which, by their nature, carry a strong emotional component (namely, the desire for quick, big gains), try to coolly and dispassionately analyze your situation to determine which investments are really most appropriate for your goals. There really aren’t any shortcuts to reaching your desired financial destination. But by taking the slow and steady path, you can work toward getting there. It wasn’t based on price alone, even though your quote was extremely competitive. Custom Cooling was recommended by many folks in my community along with a neighbor that handles the heating and cooling at Edison College. When you first visited us for the initial quote, you were the only representative that thoroughly explained all options. I found your sales presentation both informative and honest. Having been an auto dealer for almost 30 years, I appreciate that type of business approach. The installation was fast and neat with no surprises. Please feel free to use me as a reference. I will let everyone know why I chose Custom Cooling. Thank you for your admirable business ethics.!”
