FABULOUS HALLOWEEN PARTY
Whether you came dressed in a costume, a Halloween shirt or regular dress, everyone enjoyed a fun night at the Halloween Party. Dawn Benjamin and Judy Machnicz led the party hosted by the New England Club. A delicious beef stew dinner was made by Linda McKay and her team. There was great music by DJ John’s Mobile Music which kept everyone on the floor dancing. Prizes were given out for costumes. And how can we forget the surprise visit by The Village People! This group of men really put on a show one of the highlights of the night! Thanks New England for a great party.

COLUMNS STAFF
FROM THE PRESIDENT In my November article, I mentioned that some of what I wrote about was obsolete before the Columns actually went to print. Well, I’m glad to say that has happened again this month. There was a misunderstanding, and the decorating of the Clubhouse for Christmas on Saturday, November 28th, will be hosted by the Midwest Club, as originally planned. This will have already happened, so I hope everyone had a good time. The Midwest Club knows how to host a good party. They are hosting the Christmas Party on Saturday, December 5th. It looks like we’re in store for an old fashioned Christmas, complete with a great dinner. I wonder if they’ll provide snow? I hope you have your tickets to find out. Thank you to the New England Club for a great Halloween Party! There were a lot of great costumes, and even a surprise visit from “The Village People”. What a hoot! You never know what’s going to happen at a Tara Woods party. There is a great New Year’s Eve Party planned by Kathy Rafferty and Friends. With the theme, “Bring your house party to our house party”; it’s an invitation to host your friends, without all
the work of preparing your house for a party. Some lively music is planned by a new DJ, “Bouncer” Entertainment. Come to the Clubhouse for a reasonably priced, fun, New Year’s Eve with your Tara Woods friends. Don’t forget that the cutoff date to run for a position on the Board is Monday, December 7th. There are no nominations from the floor at the Monday, January 11, 2016 Annual Meeting. The letter regarding the Annual Meeting, the Bylaws revisions, the budget for 2016, and the candidates running for the Board of Directors will be mailed to members in good standing shortly after the Association Meeting on December 7th. Remember, you must be present at the meeting to vote in the election of members to the Board. We are pleased to welcome Stu Berman as our new FMO representative. Bud Snell, our representative for many years, has retired. He’s done a wonderful job of keeping us all informed of FMO news and updates from Tallahassee. Thank you, Bud, for your dedication and devotion to FMO and reminding us of how important the FMO organization is to

Tara Woods. Stu acknowledged at the meeting that he had big shoes to fill. I’m confident Stu can fit in them. The December Association Meeting is on Monday, December 7th at 7:00 PM. I look forward to seeing you there. There is much to hear about as we wrap up 2015 and head into 2016. It’s also a good time to purchase tickets to the New Year’s Eve House Party. I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and Hanukkah season. We know how to celebrate all the seasons in our energetic Tara Woods community, but we also know how to care for each other all year-round. Why not gift someone with a “random act of kindness” this holiday season. You both will receive more than you expected.

UPDATE FOR TWHA DUES, ELECTION AND VOTING This will be a final update with information about dues, elections, voting for Directors and changes to the TWHA by-laws. TWHA ANNUAL DUES: Usually I will collect dues in November and December for next year. I am now collecting for 2016. Those residents who have paid dues for 2015 are up-to-date. That will entitle you to vote for Directors, the 2016 budget and changes to the by-laws. If you have not paid for 2015 as yet, you can do so now. Be aware that 2015 dues will expire on January 31, 2016. If you choose to pay for 2016 only, be advised that you will not be permitted to vote on Monday, January 11, 2016. Of course, you also have the option to pay for 2015 and 2016 now.
Dues are $15.00 per household. Checks are made out to TWHA and cash is always accepted. You will see me around collecting dues at Saturday Coffee, Tuesday Bingo and Homeowners meetings in December and January. Dues can also be deposited in the mail slot outside the Homeowners Office and outside my lanai door. ELECTION AND VOTING: Due to new rules imposed in Chapter 723 Florida Statutes, The Florida Mobile Home Act, some changes have been mandated. Voting for Directors requires that members be present at the annual meeting. One of the new changes mandates that no nominations for Directors will be accepted after our December 7th Homeowners

FMO NEWS I want to thank Bud Snell, who recently resigned as Chairperson of FMO, who represented Tara Woods for more years than I can remember. I also want to acknowledge Fred Gabriel and Bill Keibler, who along with Bud, were there above and beyond the call of duty. I look forward to working with Fred and Bill in the coming years. I have big shoes to follow and I welcome your comments and support. Residents ask why they should become a member of the FMO. According to information provided by FMO, as a homeowner of a manufactured home, your home is unique and requires laws to protect your lifestyle and your home. FMO is an association of people just like you and is the only organization that retains a lobbyist in Tallahassee to monitor the legislature. The lobbyist works to promote legislation favorable to your lifestyle. Why does FMO need you? It is the old adage: There is strength in numbers. FMO needs numbers to lobby against legislation that would be counterproductive for us. Without the strength in members, it is impossible for FMO to be effective. Your home is your castle and you want

As we did last year, we will use your donations to provide Gift Certificates from Publix for the three shifts who work December 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, so that they can purchase Holiday dinners for their shifts. We will accept donations at Bingo on Tuesday nights and at Saturday Morning Coffee. Or you can call Chuck Poveromo or Frank Millette and we will be happy to pick up your donation. Make any checks payable to “cash”. Please give generously to those who are always there for us in our time of need. Thank you. Chuck Poveromo, 560-9642, and Frank Millette, 543-2954.

TREASURES OF TARA
You are about to read the story of two exceptional people. Have you ever been a caretaker for an elderly family member? If so, you know that it takes an unusually kind person to handle the daily dedication, frustration, love, confusing emotions, and stress that it entails. Marcia and Chuck Poveromo have lovingly taken care of Marcia’s 89-year-old Mother for many years. This provides insight
into their goodness, kindness and love of family!!! Marcia’s Dad was a pilot for Pan Am Airlines and met her Mother when he was stationed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They married and eventually left Brazil with baby Marcia, moving to Miami. In their home, with Marcia’s two younger brothers, they spoke Portuguese, as well as English. Marcia graduated from a Catholic High School where she learned Spanish from her mostly Cuban classmates. She is still fluent in both languages, which was helpful in her eventual job with Varig Brazilian Airlines in Miami. Chuck grew up in New York City (with 4 sisters!!!) and attended the Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades. He graduated with an FAA aircraft and engine license and put
that knowledge toward a long, successful career in aviation. He was in the Air Force from 1956 to 1960 and then got a job in aircraft maintenance with Pan Am at JFK. His next job was with TIA, a charter airline, traveling all over the world. He flew many charter flights to Viet Nam for the military and cattle to South America, as well as passengers on vacation! Because of his experience and skill he was hired by Varig, where he worked for 20 years. After transferring to Miami, he met Marcia and they were married in 1981. After 12 years working at Varig, Marcia became a stay-at-home Mom, raising their two daughters, Julie and Laura. At 56 years of age, with a young family, Chuck’s department closed. Fortunately, he was hired by UPS in Louisville, Kentucky as an
aircraft mechanic. In Kentucky the girls developed a passion for horseback riding. After four years Chuck was promoted to Supervisor and transferred to Rockford, Illinois. Upon moving, they promised their two unhappy girls they would buy them their own horses, which worked to appease them!! In 2004 they retired to Tara Woods and have been active since. Marcia is treasurer of Bingo, copy edits the Columns and is the Line Dance instructor (as well as full-time caretaker of her Mother). Chuck, a former volunteer firefighter, organizes the Annual Firefighters and Paramedics Holiday Dinner, is co-leader of CERT, is on Appreciation, Sound and Lighting, and Bingo Committees, as well as Florida’s State Emergency Response Team. He recently returned
from the disaster flooding in Texas. Wow!! What a good man!!! They have many accomplishments, but their pride and joy are their children. Julie (32) successfully works for an insurance cooperative in Chicago, and still rides and trains horses. She also teaches riding to adults and children in Pony Club. Laura (30) is a Clinical Pharmacist and after attaining her Doctorate was hired at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina. She also still rides and trains her horse. Chuck’s two children from a previous marriage – Linnea (44) and Charlie (45) and three grandsons top off their wonderful family. We are blessed to have them part of the Tara Woods Family!! Garden Club Fashion Show
I am sure that everyone would agree that this year’s Fashion Show was GREAT. The Calendar girls added entertainment which was fun. The clothes from Patchington, located in the Bell Tower Mall, were beautiful; we saw some interesting new styles. Remember anyone who shops Patchington’s store and mentions the show will get an additional discount, just in time for holiday shopping. Our models as ALWAYS were beautiful, and looked glamorous in their Mary Kay makeovers. Some of the ladies were asking about our Mary Kay representative, her name is Jackie Dunmire, cell number is 812-381-4489. Jackie was instrumental in getting us the Calendar Girls and Patchington for this year’s show. She is already helping me get a really big surprise for everyone next year. Rachelle Dellarocca

ROUND ROBIN The first Round Robin of the season was held on Sunday, November 22nd. Janice & George Johnston hosted the dinner, and Janell Wissler arranged for the courtside refreshments. Because of the deadline for this Columns, we don’t have the number of tennis players who participated. There is no Round Robin in December; the next Round Robin is scheduled for Sunday, January 24th. The sign-up sheet will be posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board in early January. Special Note: We are considering a change to the monthly Round Robin in January to be a 32-person team event. There will be 8 teams of 4 people per team. All the players will be rated from 1 – 32 in order to create 8 teams. Each team will play a total of 3 match-
es in a round robin format. The winning team wins a PRIZE. Details to follow!!!!! In order for this to work, we need participation from all of our tennis players (the Women’s SWIFT team and the Men’s Red, White, and Blue teams, as well as the inter-county players). We can set this up with 2 divisions, with the 4 top teams in Division A and the other 4 teams in Division B OR we can set it up with 2 divisions with equal strength in each division. We are looking for your input on this (it is up to the members to decide). MEN’S LEAGUE Red League Thanks everyone for coming out and supporting the Red Ream for our first match on Wednesday, November 4th on a very hot day. It was much appreciated. As for the tennis, no one passed out. Unfortunately, there was one cloud over us which produced rain which forced us to postpone the remainder of
the matches. The funny thing was that most of us stood in the rain; it felt good and refreshing. – Glen Fisher White League The White Team has completed its first match with surprisingly great results. We won 5 sets and lost only 1 to Pine Lakes. Let’s hope we can continue this fine performance. We had a boatload of spectators on Tuesday. Please keep coming to watch our games; it’s enjoyable to play in front of friends and neighbors. Check the Tennis Bulletin Board for our weekly schedule and team roster. – Gerry Gagnon

Get Your Affairs in Order for an Orderly Estate You may be quite willing to plan an investment strategy for your retirement years. After all, it can be enjoyable to think about traveling the world, pursuing your hobbies or participating in any of the activities you’ve associated with an active retirement. However, once you do retire, you’ll need to “shift gears” somewhat to focus on your legacy. Specifically, to protect your loved ones and ensure your intentions are clear and carried out, you’ll need to do some more planning – and you’ll need to share your thoughts with your family. Here are some moves to consider: •
List your assets and debts. Your family needs to be aware of your assets and debts, so share this information with them while you are alive and well.
•
Create a durable power of attorney. Give a trusted friend or family member a durable power of attorney to pay bills and make financial choices on your behalf if you are unable to do so.
•
Choose an executor. An executor is the person or entity you name in your will to carry out your wishes. An executor has a variety of responsibilities, so pick someone who is honest and capable of dealing with legal and financial matters. Talk with an attorney about how best to name your executor.
•
Update your will. You might have written a will many years ago, but, over time, many aspects of your life may have changed. Review your will with your attorney to ensure it reflects your current wishes.
•
Review benefits of a living trust. A simple will may not be enough to accommodate your estate-planning needs. You might want to consider estab lishing a living trust, which provides you with significant flexibility in distributing your assets and can help you avoid the time-consuming, expensive and public process of probate. To create a trust or other estate-planning documents, you will need to work with a qualified legal professional.
•
Review your beneficiary designations. The beneficiary designations on your financial accounts (401(k), IRA, etc.) and your insurance policies can even supersede the directions on your will, so it’s essential that you update these designations to reflect events such as divorce and remarriage. And make sure your beneficiaries have the facts they need to claim their benefits.
•
Share location of your legal documents. Your loved ones should know where you keep documents such as your birth certificate, will and living trust. If you keep these items in a safe deposit box, tell your family where you keep the key.
•
Encourage two-way communication. It’s obviously necessary to communicate your final wishes to your family members – but listen to their wishes and concerns, too. For example, ask your children to agree on who gets those objects of special concern to them, such as furniture, mementos and heirlooms.
As you can see, you’ll need to take several steps to fulfill your intentions – and the above list is certainly not exhaustive. So plan carefully, engage the appropriate team – financial advisor, attorney, tax professional – and put your plans in motion. By being proactive, you can greatly ease the burden on your loved ones in the future. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

It’s hard to believe we have reached the month of December. I know many of you will continue with your same activities in 2016. I would like to address those who might say “I would like to try something new next year.” My answer to them would be “Why not try joining The New Image Chorus?”. This is a new experience for all of us. We now have live piano music with our new Director, Dave Adams. We will use the music for each song so memorization will not be a problem. Just to give you a little “hint”, our performance will be entitled “Rock Roll and Remember”. With this we will be doing a variety of songs – some old-time favorites, some with three-part harmony (a challenge for each one of us) and then some, just for “fun”. We rehearse in the Clubhouse on Mondays from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. We always need more male voices, but girls are very important too! Please accept our personal invitation to come to our rehearsal on Monday, December 7th at 1:30 PM to check us out. We hope you will like us and decide to become a member of “The New Image Chorus” for your new activity in 2016! Shirley Ringleben
Happy Holidays! The Computer Club has begun a new season of free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. Our normal schedule of classes begins on December 3rd. The first and third Thursday of each month is devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer. The second and fourth Thursdays are reserved for General subjects, and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. We will not meet on December 24th or 31st due to the holidays. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. This is a great time to learn the Basics; we are starting again at the very beginning and assume that you know nothing about computers. The General topics cover all sorts of subjects, programs, and hardware, including Windows, the Internet, e-mail, multi-media, tablets, and e-book readers. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St.Laurent, The Computer Tutor

JANUARY CRUISERS
THE GARDEN CLUB
Time really does fly; I find it unbelievable that we are wishing everyone: HAPPY HOLIDAYS and the Very Best New Year. Since I am writing this before the Fashion Show I cannot report on what happened, but I am confident that everyone had a good time. This was our first year with entertainment and a new store, Patchington (see the center page for more on the Fashion Show). The Garden Club meetings for November, December and January have been cancelled. We will meet again on February 13th, to discuss the March 5th Trash and Treasure and our Luncheon plans. We will also be collecting our $5.00 dues. Please put your name/ telephone number in an envelope with the $5.00. This would be a great opportunity
for anyone who is not a member to join. Please mark your calendars, so that you remember to attend this meeting. Please start to put aside items to donate to the Trash and Treasure. Remember that the money from the Trash and Treasure is a large part of the Garden Club’s income and helps make possible the FREE fashion show. Rachelle DellaRocca WHAT TO PLANT Bedding Plants: To add color to the winter garden, plant masses of begonia, impatiens, and geranium. Bulbs: Amaryllis is a popular plant for the holiday season. They can be forced to bloom now or planted outdoors for spring blooms. Herbs: Plant herbs that thrive in cool weather. Some to try are parsley, thyme, sage, dill, fennel, and cilantro. Vegetables: Reliable cool season vegetables to plant this month include celery, cauliflower, lettuce, cabbage, and carrot. WHAT TO DO Poinsettias: One of the most popular holiday plants is poinsettia. Enjoy it indoors now; then plant in the garden to re-bloom next year. (Continues on page 24)

(Continuing Garden Club from page 22) Irrigation: Plants may need irrigation if the weather has been warm and dry. Monitor for signs of stress and water only as needed. Fungal disease: Continue monitoring for brown patch and large patch fungal disease through May. Cultural practices are key in control. Houseplants: Inspect regularly for pests on indoor plants. Keep in mind that plant specific temperature, light, and humidity are key to ensuring that indoor plants thrive.
Soil Test: If plants did not perform as desired this year or new plantings are being planned, a soil test may be a good idea. Compost: Composting is environmentally friendly and produces a beneficial soil amendment or mulch. Plant debris provides the carbon ingredient needed for successful composting. Pests: While cooler weather generally means fewer pests, some populations actually increase at this time of year. Continue monitoring
and treat as needed. Holiday Trees: Consider enjoying a live southern red cedar and then plant it in the landscape when the holidays are over. Protect: Falling temperatures may require protection of tender orchids, impatiens, and tomatoes. Excerpts from the University of Florida Gardening Calendar

NEW YORK/NEW JERSEY CLUB
12/15
Thank you so much to everyone who helped and/or brought baked goods for the Bake Sale at the Craft Fair. That’s always a fun morning, though it does start a bit early. Some of you changed shirts and did double duty working with the Entertainers serving the lunch. The kitchen was
certainly very busy! Our December meeting is on Sun. Dec. 6 at 4:00pm when we will celebrate Christmas together with an Italian dinner. Antipasto will be provided. You are asked to bring an Italian dish to share. The sign-up sheet is hanging on the Club bulletin board in the clubhouse. This is BYOB as usual, and don’t forget to wear your name tag and bring a few dollars for the “social” raffle. You are also asked to bring an extra $5/ person to be donated to a charity that
will be selected at our meeting. As always, everyone from New York and New Jersey is welcome to attend our meetings. New residents, renters and visitors are especially welcome. If you will be traveling this Holiday season, stay safe and have a Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah with your family and friends. I look forward to seeing everyone on Sun. Dec. 6th. MIDWEST CLUB
Christmas is just around the corner and it’s time for the Midwest Club to hold its Christmas dinner and Holiday fun. WHEN: Friday, December 11th TIME: 5:00 PM WHERE: The Clubhouse Meat will be provided and we are asking that everyone bring a side dish or dessert to share. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the bulletin board. It will be helpful if you included what you would like to bring. Also, furnish your own drinks. Instead of the “white elephant” gift exchange, it was decided for everyone to bring a $5.00 unisex gift. Place your gift in a brown paper sack. No ribbons or bows. We will be doing something different this year. Secretary, Arlene Greene
MID-ATLANTIC CLUB
The Mid-Atlantic Club held their regular October meeting on October 18th with 30 members and 1 guest in attendance. The Club followed an Oktoberfest theme with all members contributing a German or Fall blend of beers to our “Tubs Full-o-Beer”. Then we enjoyed a Beer Tasting event with warm soft pretzels before the meeting. Some of us were very surprised at the variety of tastes associated with German Beer. Wayne Cox, Vice President, provided Polka and “Oompah” music to liven up the festivities. Wayne also conducted the meeting that followed. Plans were finalized for the November “Chili Cook-off”. Shirley Mize, Judy Powers, Mary Green, Nancy Wuebbeler, Pat Virkus and Sue Yohn volunteered to be the cooks for the contest. Sue was volunteered in absentia by her husband, Darryl, as she was still with their daughter in Pennsylvania. (This writer thinks Darryl must be a very brave man.) Wayne said there will be a gift card presented to the winner. We are all looking forward to the Mid-Atlantic Club’s annual Christmas Party at Bianca’s Restaurant. This year will be a buffet with a variety of entrees to choose from. Wayne led a discussion and asked for suggestions from the members about 2016 activities. Mary Green suggested ethnic/regional foods for January which was approved. Bob Uccello suggested attending the February 13th performance of the “Del Prado’s” at Fishbones Restaurant in lieu of a formal meeting. This suggestion was also approved and Bob agreed to make the arrangements. March is still unsettled, but April will be a boat trip from Bokeelia to Cabbage Key; Jane Crawford is in charge of making the arrangements. May and June will remain the “Mother’s Day” and “Father’s Day” celebrations. Maggie Discepolo was appointed the official “$5.00 Lady in Charge” of 50/50 ticket sales. After the meeting we enjoyed an Oktoberfest dinner of Bratwurst with sautéed onions and peppers, sauerkraut and chips. Shirley Mize provided a treat with her German Cherry Crumble Cake. Assorted cookies were also provided for dessert. We welcomed several new members and are looking forward to seeing our “snowbirds” who continue to return. New members are always welcome, and we hope to add you to our Club. Mary Donald, Secretary
NEW ENGLAND CLUB Come out and help decorate our beautiful New England Club Christmas tree on Saturday, November 28th at 9:00 AM. The more the merrier and any new New England themed ornaments are welcome. The New England Christmas party is being held on Saturday, December 12th at 5:00 PM. The party is being catered by Beef O’Brady’s. Dinner will be Rocky Mountain Chicken with potato and vegetable, salad and bread service. The cost for this party will be $6.00 per person, with the Club subsidizing the remainder of the cost. Dues must be paid to attend this party, and all Club members are asked to bring a dessert. We are asking all members to pre-pay for this party and you may do so by contacting Dawn, Judy or Bev. We must have a count for the caterer, so the deadline for payment is Saturday, November 28th. If you are paying by check, please make it out to the New England Club. Hope to see everyone there! We will undecorate our tree on Saturday, January 2nd at 9:00 AM. Please come and help if you can! So Ladies and Gentlemen…..it is always a little sad and happy when a show is over; hence the logo for theater . I do hope that you were able to join us for our fundraiser, Tara’s Got Talent. The Entertainers would like to give a special thank you to those of you supporting us. I wonder if
the show sparked anyone into thinking about their own talent; so maybe next year??? We now look ahead to our next regular production in March 2016. The show Senior Follies will be on stage March 11th and 12th. Our actors are already in rehearsal, learning their blocking and lines. It is not too early to mark your calendars for this once a year event. This year will be the premier for several people. We have several new actors joining us on stage along with a new Director. These people, along with our all-star regular
players, are working hard to produce the best show for your enjoyment. I hope that you will give our cast of players and our Director, Patty Sparany, your encouragement when you see them around our community. It takes a lot of work to put on a stage performance, but hearing your applause and your words of support go a long way to prove to us that it is appreciated. Thank you all for your support. Pat-one, Stage Manager Entertainers
