TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION (TWHA) As of publication, TWHA has four open positions for the Homeowners Board: Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Membership Secretary and Director (1 seat open). The following list are members who have placed their names for consideration. Anyone who is still interested in running for any of the open positions should contact Celeste Perre. Elections will be held at the Homeowners meeting on Monday, January 12, 2015. For more information see the article, Tara Woods Homeowners Assoication Update for 2014.
POSITION: TREASURER NAME:
Paul Montelaro
My wife and I moved to Tara Woods in 2012, and I have been the TWHA Treasurer for the past two years. Prior to moving to Florida, I was the Treasurer for the Pacific Point Homeowners Association for two terms (four years). As you know, my 30-year banking career includes 18 years of regulatory service with both the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and the Texas Department of Banking, and 12 years of service in the private sector. As a result, I have gained considerable banking regulatory knowledge, as well as a sound understanding of corporate finance. With sound financial management and controls, the net equity position of the TWHA, including contingent liabilities, has been increased by 60 percent, from $14,000 to $22,500, during the last 18 months. Going forward, we will continue to emphasize sustained positive cash flow and equity growth. Thanks for your support!
POSITION: DIRECTOR NAME:
• • • • • • • • • • • •
Phil Featherbay
My wife, Diana, and I purchased our home here in September of 2012; we finally moved here in October of 2013 from Monticello, N.Y. I feel that with my past association with various organizations including a Homeowners Association, I can help and work with the present Board of Directors in Tara Woods to make this an even better place to live. Before coming to Tara Woods, I performed in the following volunteer capacities: Charter member of People for Equal Justice, Sullivan County, N.Y. Chapter. Chairman of the Town of Fallsburg, N.Y. Republican Party (2 years). Chief of Fire Police, Hurleyville, N.Y., Fire Company #1 (4 years). Officer at Large, Hurleyville, N.Y., Fire Company #1 (1 ½ years). Secretary of the Hurleyville, N.Y., Fire Company #1 (4 ½ years). Vice President of Hurleyville, N.Y., Fire Company #1. President of the Hurleyville, N.Y., Fire Company #1. Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners, Hurleyville Fire District (4 years). Member of the Board of Directors, Foxcroft Homeowners Association (2 years). President of the Foxcroft Homeowners Association (2 years). Director of Operations Tri-State Mechanical Systems, Inc. Project Manager World Trade Center Tower 1 (Freedom Tower).
POSITION: MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY NAME:
Celeste Perre
My husband, Tony, and I bought our home in 1988 and moved in full time in January of 1991. I have served in this position for three years. The first year was appointment by the Board. For the last two years I was elected. I have been an active member of our community since the beginning. This includes the Showcase Chorus, Treasurer in the Tara Woods’ Bowling League, The New York/New Jersey Club, and with Tony. I ran the Apparel cabinet in the Clubhouse for 12 years. Last employment before retirement was administrative assistant with the Town of Babylon on Long Island, New York where I served for 15 years. I appreciate your support in the upcoming election.
POSITION: DIRECTOR
NAME: Linda McKay OBJECTIVE: Ensure all ideas, suggestions and concerns from
the Tara Woods’ Residents are communicated to Hometown America. I commit to follow through on those items by obtaining reasonable solutions for the community and its residents. During my 9 years as a resident of Tara Woods, I have been an active member of the New England Club. For 5 ½ years, I have been a member of the Activities Committee of Tara Woods and the Chairperson for the past 3 ½ years. Over the past years, we have held numerous community events such as holiday parties, cookouts, golf cart parades and many raffles and prizes for our residents. By doing so, this enabled us to fund the purchase of Made in U.S.A. American Flags for the monument, a new refrigerator for the pool Tiki Hut, new holiday decorations, as well as other items for the residents of Tara Woods. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: 1994 to 2009 Delta Airlines – Customer Service/Gate Agent. 1993 to 1994 August Max – Store Manager. 1979 to 1993 General Electric/Ametek – Supervisor/Production Control Specialist. EDUCATION: A.S. in Travel & Tourism – Northern Essex Community College. A.S. in Business Administration – Northern Essex Community College. Certificates in Materials Management. Completed Courses in Effective Presentations, Negotiating Skills and Supervision and Leadership.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND AWARDS: Charter President of Timberland Lions Club, New Hampshire District President of Lioness Club and awarded with the International Melvin Jones Award for Outstanding Achievement and Contribution to the State of New Hampshire.
POSITION: DIRECTOR NAME:
Nancy Wuebbeler
I’ve been married to Wally for 55 years and we live on Amelia Road. We have been in Tara Woods for 11 years and have lived in 4 neighborhoods.
EDUCATION: Graduated high school in Cincinnati, Ohio. Attended The College of Mount St. Joseph on the Ohio – majoring in Business Administration. WORK EXPERIENCE: Employed for 30 years in business medicine, with my last position as office manager in a large medical-legal practice.
GOALS: To continue the ideals established by the present Board, express the needs of the community and hopefully reach a satisfactory conclusion for both the Board and the residents.
POSITION: RECORDING SECRETARY No one has submitted to run for this position at the time of publication. Please contact Celeste Perre if you are interested in the position.

The “season” is in full swing at Tara Woods! It was great to see so many new people at the Halloween party. I highly recommend the Christmas party on Sat., Dec. 13 and bringing in the New Year with your friends and neighbors at the Tara Woods “House Party” on New Year’s Eve. There are no planned parties in January, but the cruise, a show, the yard sale and lots of other activities will keep you as busy as you want to be. Thank you to Evelyn Loud and the New England Club for a great Craft Fair. There was a wonderful variety of crafts offered this year and a steady stream of shoppers throughout the morning. The Bake Sale, hosted by The New Image Chorus, and the lunch, provided by the New York/New Jersey Club, were very profitable venues, as well as the raffle run by Sound and Lighting. I hope the crafters did well and will be returning next year. It was energizing to see a number of workers, committed to both Chorus and the NY/NJ
Club, “changing shirts” and going from one to the other. They certainly took their obligations seriously. It was a busy morning, starting very early for those helping, but the fun is in the fellowship of working together. If you haven’t experienced it, this is what contributes to the “Magic of Tara Woods”. The election in January 2015, for four new board members for the Homeowners Association is shaping up to be a “real” election. Please see Celeste Perre’s article on the election and the candidates to date. She has provided their bios and pictures to help you get to know them a little better. Thank you, Celeste, for all the work you’re doing for the Nominating Committee and preparing for the Annual Meeting. Nominations will be taken from the floor at the Annual Meeting on January 12th for any additional candidates. There is also time to throw your hat in the ring and get your bio and picture into the January Columns. Just get the information to Celeste by December 10th. You must be a
member of the Homeowners Association to run for office and to vote. If you are not sure if you are a “member in good standing” – that your dues are paid for 2014 – please contact Celeste. We’re looking forward to a stimulating election in January. On behalf of the Board, I’d like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season. May one of your New Year’s resolutions be that you commit to helping at one activity here in the community, giving yourself the opportunity to experience the Magic of Tara Woods. Merry Christmas and Happy, Healthy New Year!

YOU WOULD NEVER HAVE GUESSED Continued from November The Sergeant’s name is Bob Keeshan. You and the world know him as Captain Kangaroo. On another note, there was this wimpy little man (who passed away) on PBS, gentle and quiet. Mr. Rogers is another of those you would least suspect of being anything but what he portrayed to our youth. Mr. Rogers was a U.S. Navy Seal, combat-proven in Vietnam with over 25 confirmed kills to his name. He wore a long-sleeved sweater on TV, to cover the many tattoos on his forearm and biceps. He was a master in small arms and

hand-to-hand combat, able to disarm or kill in a heartbeat. After the war Mr. Rogers became an ordained Presbyterian minister and therefore a pacifist – vowing to never harm another human and also dedicating the rest of his life to trying to help lead children on the right path in life. He hid away the tattoos and his past life and won our hearts with his quiet wit and charm. America’s real heroes don’t flaunt what they did; they quietly go about their day-to-day lives, doing what they do best. They earned our respect and the
freedoms we all enjoy. Look around and see if you can find one of those heroes in your midst. Often, they are the ones you’d least suspect, but would most like to have on your side if anything ever happened. Take time to thank anyone who has fought for our freedom. With encouragement they could be the next Captain Kangaroo or Mr. Rogers. Submitted by: Ruth and Timmy Zimmer
ACTIVITIES Where has the year gone – Christmas is just around the corner! Trees are up and the hall is decorated. The Golf Cart Parade is on December 10th. Everyone should be in front of the Clubhouse no later than 6:00 PM. We will start promptly, so if you are late you will have to catch up with the gang!! There will be caroling in the Clubhouse at 7:00 PM. You are asked to bring a plate of your favorite cookies to share; punch and coffee will be provided. Please support the New England Club by attending the Tara Woods Christmas Party. I’m
sure, with Judy organizing it, that it will be wonderful. The New Year’s Eve Party is going to be December 31st. The price has not yet been determined. We are looking to keep the price as low as possible – the more residents that attend the lower the price of the tickets. There is new Entertainment this year, but of course it is New Year’s and it still is expensive. We are calling this “TARA WOODS NEW YEAR’S EVE HOUSE PARTY”; make a table with your friends and decide what appetizers to make for your table. Champagne, pastries and
coffee will be provided by Activities. Watch for the poster for details. Please make sure you have proper storage containers to put away your decorations. There will not be any storage under the stage or in the back. Large totes are available at Home Depot. I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah! If you are traveling, be safe. Linda McKay, Activities
ENTERTAINING NEWS
So Ladies and Gentlemen…..December is here. By now most of the gifts have been purchased and likely mailed to the loved ones who are not fortunate enough to live in Paradise. If your tradition is to decorate, I hope that you, like Lou
and me, appreciate not having frozen fingers in the process of decorating outside. We are looking forward to the fabulous Golf Cart Parade (with a few bikes thrown in for good measure), then gathering for cookies and singing with our friends later in the Clubhouse. But the best of the Christmas season is coming near the end of the month. No matter what you believe, people just somehow seem kinder toward each other during this holiday. So,
as a kindness toward each of you, I am not going to bash you again with information about the Entertainers. I will just say keep us in your thoughts and wish us a safe and successful season in 2015. So from the Entertainers, my wonderful husband and me, we wish you Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah and a very Happy New Year. Pat-one, Stage Manager

FMO NEWS We are off and running with another active Federation of Manufactured Homeowners, Inc. (FMO) winter season. It is good to be back at Tara Woods as your FMO representative. Thanks to those who are FMO Members and a plea goes out to those of you who are not yet members to join. The low cost of $25.00 per year is the best investment you can make. FMO’s main job is to lobby for Manufactured Home Owners’ interests in Tallahassee. The list of accomplishments over the years is impressive and in many cases has saved home owners a
nice piece of change. Our voice in Tallahassee is only as strong as our membership numbers. Right now statewide FMO membership is near an all-time low. This needs to change. If you are not already on the band wagon, join now. Membership applications can be obtained by going to the Tara Woods Homeowners’ web site (http://twha.us) or in the Clubhouse at the FMO bulletin board space. Each month during the winter season, FMO District Meetings are held locally. You are invited to attend any or all of them
(even if you are not an FMO member). At the November 10, 2014 meeting, State Representative Ken Roberson was the Guest Speaker. His topic was “Legislative action this year and bills that may impact our lifestyle in the future”. Just a heads up, Tara Woods will be hosting the February 9, 2015 district meeting. Let’s plan to have a good turnout from our park at that meeting. Questions? Call: Bud Snell, 567-2712

GARDEN CLUB Time really does fly! I find it unbelievable that we are wishing everyone HAPPY HOLIDAYS and the Very Best New Year. Since I am writing this before the Fashion Show, I cannot report on what happened, but I am confident that everyone had a good time, and I want to thank everyone who made it possible. As the sign in the Clubhouse states, the Garden Club meetings for November and December have been cancelled. We will meet again on January 10th to discuss the March 7th Trash and Treasure event and any luncheon plans. Please mark your calendars so that you remember to attend this meeting and start to put aside items to donate. Also, remember that the money from Trash and Treasure is a large part of the Garden Club’s income which helps make possible the FREE fashion show. Rachelle DellaRocca

University of Florida Gardening Calendar South Florida Edition December What to plant: Bedding Plants: To add color to the winter garden, plant masses of begonia, impatiens, and geranium. Bulbs: Amaryllis is a popular plant for the holiday season. They can be forced to bloom now or planted outdoors for spring blooms. Herbs: Plant herbs that thrive in cool weather. Some to try are parsley, thyme, sage, dill, fennel, and cilantro. Vegetables: Reliable cool season vegetables to plant this month include celery, cauliflower, lettuce, cabbage, and carrot. What to do: Poinsettias: One of the most popular holiday plants is poinsettia. Enjoy it indoors now; then plant in the garden to re-bloom next year. Irrigation: Plants may need irrigation if the weather has been warm and dry. Monitor for signs of stress and

Pests: While cooler weather generally means fewer pests, some populations actually increase at this time of year. Continue monitoring and treat as needed. Holiday Trees: Consider enjoying a live southern red cedar and then plant it in the landscape when the holidays are over. Protect: Falling temperatures may require protection of tender orchids, impatiens, and tomatoes.

“For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 What a wonderful time of the year as we celebrate the longawaited birth of our Savior, Jesus. All ladies are invited to join
us as we celebrate His birth. We will share Scriptures from the Old Testament that foretold His coming and also Scriptures that told of their fulfillment. Linda Clegg will be giving a monologue about Mary’s relative, Elizabeth, and how she plays a part in the Christmas story. The date of our meeting is Monday, December 15th at 12:00 PM in the Clubhouse Living Room. Each lady who attends is asked to bring two dozen cookies as we will be taking gifts of Christmas cookies to our shut-ins here at Tara Woods. A time of refreshments
and fellowship will follow our meeting. You are invited to visit our Christmas tree in the Living Room. As always, it is a tribute to Jesus whose birthday we celebrate. And the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.” I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Merry Christmas to all. Questions: Ann Scott, 543-9285.

MORE TENNIS NEWS TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE The 2014-2015 tennis season started on Thursday, November 6th, with the two Tara Woods women’s teams playing against each other. There were a couple of close sets and even a tiebreaker. When the well-played tennis was finished, the Tara Woods’ Angels came out ahead by winning 5 sets and losing only 1 against the Tara Woods’ Jewels. Both teams gathered on the Verandah after the match to enjoy great refreshments provided by the home team Angels. – Linda Engel

MEN’S LEAGUE Red League - The Red Team started the season playing at home against Sabal Springs on Wednesday, November 5th. The Tara Woods Stallions won just 1set and lost 5. – Glen Fisher
White League - The White Team had a slow start to the season, which began on Tuesday, November 4th. We had only 1 win out of 6 matches against the team from Lake Fairways. There is only one way to go now … and that’s UP. The beer after the match still tastes as good as last year. Check our schedule on the Tennis Bulletin Board for future matches and standings. We enjoy seeing the folks from Tara Woods at our matches. – Gerry Gagnon Blue League - Thursday, November 6th, marked the beginning of the tennis season for the Blue League. Our Tara Woods’ Tigers played against the Pine Lake Gators. We won 5 sets and lost only 1 – not bad for our first match of the season. – Bill Powers
TENNIS TIDBITS If anyone is getting new carpeting for their home, we could use some of your old carpeting for the tennis courts. We use the old carpeting for the rugs that we drag across the courts to dry them after it rains. Please contact Nancy Schoeppner or Fred Puhlfuerst if you can help us out. There are many new people who have moved into Tara Woods. If anyone is interested in playing tennis, we have all sorts of activities that you may enjoy. Just come to any tennis event and introduce yourself or contact any of the tennis members listed on the Tennis Bulletin Board. Linda Engel

TREASURES OF TARA
I am sure most of you know Dawn and Bob Benjamin. If you don’t, please make a point to meet this positive, outgoing, caring couple. I call Dawn, the “Captain of the Tara Woods (TW) Cheering Squad” because she is always cheering and encouraging everyone in all they do, wherever she is.
Dawn and Bob were raised in Connecticut, attending the same high school. They married young (ages 21 and 23) and raised four children in Preston, Connecticut. They have been married for 54 years. Ironically, Dawn was pregnant with her first child at the same time her Mother was preg-

We are having a Prime Rib dinner, catered by Beef O’Brady’s. The cost for members is $5.00 (if dues are paid). We are also asking everyone to bring a dessert,
as well as BYOB. We will also be having a short business meeting, and some fun Christmas games and raffles. Hope to see everyone there! The Tara Woods Christmas Party, which we are hosting, is Saturday, December 13. The last day to buy tickets is Saturday, December 6. Tickets are $23.00. If you volunteered to be on a committee, I will contact you as to when we need you. Saturday, January 3, we will un-trim our New England Christmas tree. Please come help if you can. Judy Machnicz
nant with her youngest child. The Benjamin’s are so proud of their three sons and one daughter, as well as their eight grandchildren. Their family visits Tara Woods each season, and they have the same enthusiasm for life as their parents. We love it when they are all here! Bob is a very humble man who worked hard for 39 years and had a successful career at Electric Boats General Dynamics in Groton, Conn. At 58 years, he had a heart attack, open heart surgery and a double bypass, but this did not stop Bob. His heart just kept on growing and continues to grow with love and kindness. Dawn, too, had a thriving 31year career as a sales person for Princess House Products, selling crystal and home decorations. She worked her way up to Divisional Organizer. She won trips for the two of them all over the world. Some places were: London, Paris, Spain, Hawaii,
Caribbean, Canada and all over the United States. That’s a lot of hard work!!! After Bob’s heart attack and Dawn’s recovery from breast cancer in 1990, they bought their Tara Woods (TW) home in 1991 and visited often. Dawn always loved the story of Gone With The Wind so Tara Woods was the perfect place for them. In 1998 they became Snow Birds and TW has not been the same since! They are both skilled athletes and participate in many activities. They both love to bowl, and Dawn won the highest average for the ladies last year. Bob played tennis, was on the original softball team, and started the Horseshoe League with Floyd Jacobs. Dawn was the Captain of the Tennis Team for 13 years; she proudly reports their tennis team, “the Angels”, won first place in the league two years ago. She has been president of the New England Club for 15
years. Also, she started and implemented the original Garden Club Luncheon and Fashion Show which has become the highlight of the Ladies Social Season. Sometimes suffering brings out greatness and it certainly is true in Bob’s life. For the last couple of years, he has had physical challenges, but it has not stopped him. Through pain and discomfort, Bob continues to attend most activities, always showing his wide, genuine smile and being supportive of his wife. His sense of humor and love of life surpass his pain. He is a true inspiration. We thank Dawn and Bob for their years of service, for sharing their strong leadership skills, their positive attitudes, and their sense of play. We are a happier community because of them! Mary Nothnagel

TARA WOODS “MAGIC” SOFTBALL TEAM
Mondays - 2:00 - 4:00 PM No auditions required Come and have some fun with us! Have you ever thought you might like to be a part of an Old-Fashioned Western “Hoe Down”? Well, here’s your chance! The Chorus has begun rehearsing for our performance next year. We are having so much fun singing songs like “Happy Trails” and “King of The Road”. Some of us might even try a little “Acting” and “Dancing”. So with this bit of information, why don’t you come and sing with us at one of our rehearsals? I am sure before you leave you will want to “sign up”. We are always looking for more male voices, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need the gals, too! Shirley Ringleben
Tuesday League will begin on December 2 at 10:00 AM. Sign-up sheet is posted in Library. All are welcome and instructions are available for new players. Friday League will start on January 9. This is a singles league. Sign-up sheet will be posted in Library. Dues are $5.00 for each league. Banquet will be held the first week in April. The Shuffleboard team hosts the Yard Sale which will be on Saturday, January 31st. Tables will be $10.00 each. Contact Ken Atkinson, 815-970-0467, or Ken Clark, 609-432-1383, to reserve a table(s)
BIKING Bicycle servicing was very good this past year with well over 100 residents using my service. Maintenance, tires and tubes are the majority of the problems. At this time I have 17 BIKES available – girls/boys, 24 and 26 inch. I have requests for 4 three-wheelers – so if you have one to donate, I would appreciate it. Call me if you have any bikes or parts and I will pick them up. HAPPY BIKING, Jack Boylan, 567-0119.

Check Out This Year-End Financial Checklist
As 2014 draws to a close, you may want to look back on the progress you’ve made this past year in various areas of your life — and that certainly includes progress toward your financial goals. At the same time, you may want to make some end-of-year moves that can close out 2014 on a positive note while paving the way for a productive 2015.
HERE ARE A FEW SUCH MOVES TO CONSIDER: • •
Boost your retirement plan contributions. This actually isn’t an “end-of-year” move because you have until April 15, 2015, to contribute to your Roth or Traditional IRA for the 2014 tax year. Nonetheless, the sooner you get extra dollars working for you in your IRA, the better. You can put in up to $5,500 to your IRA (or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older) for 2014. If you are self-employed, or run a small business, you also have until April 15 to contribute to a retirement account, such as a SEP IRA or a SIMPLE plan. In addition to helping you build resources for retirement, these types of plans can offer you some tax advantages — so if you haven’t established a retirement plan yet, consult with your financial and tax professionals Sell your “losers.” If you own investments that have lost value since you purchased them, you can sell them before 2014 ends and use the tax loss to offset some capital gains you may have earned in other investments. If you don’t have any capital gains, you can use up to $3,000 of your tax losses to offset other ordinary income. And for a loss greater than $3,000, you can “carry over” the excess and deduct it from your taxes in future years. If you still liked the investment that you sold at a loss, and you want to keep it in your portfolio, you could repurchase it, but you’ll have to wait 31 days to avoid violating the IRS’ “wash sale” rules. Keep in mind that these suggestions only apply to investments held outside your employer-sponsored retirement account; you can’t take a tax deduction on capital losses in a 401(k) or similar plan. • Evaluate your 401(k) investment mix. You may be able to adjust the investment mix in your 401(k) as often as you like. So when evaluating your 401(k), make sure your holdings aren’t concentrated in just a few investments, and try to determine if your portfolio is still appropriate for your risk tolerance — not too aggressive or too conservative. Also, if your plan offers a “Roth” option, consider taking advantage of it — with a Roth, you won’t be able to deduct your 401(k) contributions from your taxes, but once you retire, you won’t be taxed on your with- drawals. • Review your insurance coverage. If you’ve experienced any changes in your life in 2014 — new spouse, new child, divorce, new job, etc. — you may need to review your life insurance coverage to make sure that it’s still sufficient for your needs and that you have the correct beneficiaries in place. By making these and other moves, you can say a fond farewell to 2014, knowing that you’ve done what you could to help bolster your financial position — for 2015 and beyond. John Bradford, a Dublin University student, was on the side of the road hitchhiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a big storm. The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly, he saw a car slowly coming towards him and stop. John, desperate for shelter and without

thinking about it, got into the car and closed the door...... only to realize there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn’t on. The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road ahead and saw a curve approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life. Then, just before the car hit the curve, a hand appeared out of nowhere through the window, and turned the wheel. John, paralyzed with terror, watched as the hand came through the window, but never touched or harmed him. Shortly thereafter, John saw the lights of a pub appear down the road, so, gathering strength, he jumped out of the car and ran to it. Wet and out of breath, he
rushed inside and started telling everybody about the horrible experience he had just had. A silence enveloped the pub when everybody realized he was crying.... And wasn’t drunk. Suddenly, the door opened, and two other people walked in from the dark and stormy night. They, like John, were also soaked and out of breath. Looking around, and seeing John Bradford sobbing at the bar, one said to the other…Look Paddy....there’s that bloody idiot that got in the car while we were pushing it!!!!’ Contributed by Bill Nothnagel
