any times as you read the Columns, I bet you skim over some articles but always find and read the important Column called BIRTHDAYS and ANNIVERSARIES. Shirley has written that Column for every issue since February 1989!! That’s a long time!! Shirley, an only child, was born in Buffalo, NY on May 3, 1928, and graduated from Kenmore High School in 1946. She met Gil at a Methodist Church function and married him on August 18, 1951. They raised their daughter, Gail, in New York and during those years Shirley worked as a Secretary for two sales firms and at Daemen College in Buffalo, NY. Gil was later transferred by Dow Chemical to Dover, Ohio where they lived for ten years. Shirley and Gil moved to Tara Woods in February 1988 and Shirley worked as a weekend Receptionist in the Front Sales Office from 1989 to 2006. Gil also worked part time in Sales. He cooked hot dogs at the Front Office on various Saturdays for visitors.

When they were not working, they were both very active at Tara Woods. They opened and ran the apparel and watch sales at Saturday morning coffee for 8 years. (Tony and Celeste Perre ran it after them.) Shirley was involved in a tap dance class, a round dancing class and line dancing as well. She was also involved in Bocce, Spanish class and Chorus, of which she is presently secretary for the Chorus Board and is still a very active member. She frequently has danced during the Chorus performances. Because Tara Woods was a new Community, they were involved in many activities to sell homes. They had a Tara Woods display at the Shell Factory in 1994, and in April 1994 at the Open House they had the theme of “Gone with the Wind”. Shirley was dressed all day as Scarlett and Gil was Rhett Butler. That night the management had cock-

tails at poolside and then a dance in the Clubhouse with a full orchestra. Scarlett and Rhett danced all night. No wonder homes sold so rapidly!! Shirley is proud to say she has been a member of the Eastern Star for 63 years

in Sabal Springs, which is a blessing. As you know, Shirley is a generous, talented, non-judgmental woman, who is fair and loves helping people. We

are so fortunate to have this classy lady in Tara Woods and we are privileged to have her as our 2017 Honoree.

Thanks, Shirley

FROM THE PRESIDENT Thank you to everyone who attended the Annual Meeting on January 9th or responded with proxies if you couldn’t attend. We must have a quorum at this meeting for the election of Directors and to vote on the budget. We exceeded the quorum needed, thanks to your participation and support. It was a successful meeting, as the budget passed and four Directors were sworn in. Welcome to our two new Directors, Joanie Byrnes and Eileen Robinson; and thank you to Marie Ivens and Nancy Wuebbeler for running again. We are very fortunate to have elected four Directors with the expertise necessary to carry on the important work of the Board. I look forward to working with them as we all work together for the good of the community. The Board held a meeting immediately after the Annual Meeting to elect officers. The officers for the next year are: Janet Daly, President; Frank Millette, Vice President; Eileen Robinson, Treasurer; Marie Ivens, Recording Secretary; and Ann Millette, Membership Secretary. Lou Dunning, Nancy Wuebbeler and Joanie Byrnes are Directors At Large. Paul Montelaro was thanked for his four years of service as Treasurer. He did a great job. Thank you, also, to Celeste Perre, who resigned a few months ago, for a wonderful job as Membership Secretary and Director At Large. A concern regarding the use of the Dog Park in the rear of the community was raised. Please

remember to pick up after your dog when using the park. There are bags and waste containers conveniently located by the park. Please use them and do not force others to pick up after your dog. Just as you must clean up after your dog when walking them in the community, you are expected to clean up after them when using the dog park. At this time, please continue to bring your own water until the situation with the water faucet is resolved. The New Year’s Eve Party was a very successful event. Thank you to those who helped set up and take down tables and chairs and hang decorations and un-decorate. The tables looked beautiful, individually decorated in many styles and colors. A special thank you to Peg Gamble for the inspiration and incentive to make the party happen. We never expected such a large response. 153 people attended and enjoyed the music and dancing to Lady K and DJ Watson entertainment, the New Year’s Eve Classic horse race and the social raffle. It’s been suggested that we continue this type of party for next New Year’s Eve. Thank you to Sound & Lighting for bringing “Red Hot and Blue Collar” entertainment to our stage in January. It was one of the best shows to date. The female singer was outstanding and her “comedian” husband kept us laughing. We appreciate all your efforts to bring quality entertainment to Tara Woods. There are lots of events happening in February with numer-

ous opportunities to participate in the active Tara Woods lifestyle. All the events should be advertised in this Columns. The MidAtlantic Club will be bringing in The Del Prados to entertain at the Valentine’s Day party on February 12th. If you like 50’s music, you don’t want to miss this party! Appreciation Day on February 25th is the culmination of a very busy month. See Polly Brown to learn more about this fun day sponsored by Hometown America. Welcome to our snowbirds who are here for Jan. Feb. & March. Many of you consistently return to beautiful Tara Woods each season and look forward to participating in numerous social occasions. We invite you to relax and have a wonderful winter vacation with us. New people are always welcome at all venues. Please read the Columns, watch the posters and information posted on the Clubhouse bulletin boards and attend Saturday Morning Coffee to hear about all that is happening. There is no reason to miss an event if you make an effort to visit the Clubhouse or talk with your neighbors. I look forward to seeing you around the community and at the next TWHA Membership Meeting on Monday, February 13 at 7:00pm. Janet Daly A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others. Frank Morgan

MANAGER’S CORNER TARA WOODS RESIDENTS

Beautiful surroundings, convenient location, friendly staff, our community gives residents reasons to brag. In order for us to brag about our community we need to trim, weed and power wash our homes. We will be starting our YARD OF THE QUARTER in March. I have been out inspecting homes in the community. I am looking at yard maintenance and the condi-

tion of the home, i.e.: paint, and power washing. The YARD OF THE QUARTER will be chosen in March and the winner will receive a $50.00 gift card from Home Depot. We all need to work together to make this community a safe place. Please obey our street signs, and the speed limit of 20 miles per hour within the community. Please be careful of pedestrians and animals

when traveling through the community. Safety is a number one priority. If you are paying your rent by check please put your lot number on the check. “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible”. Dalai Lama Darlene D. Bradley – Tara Woods Community Manager

THE “MAGIC” OF TARA WOODS

Exp. 4/17

I’ve heard people talking about how the magic has disappeared from our community. Well, I’m here to say that’s not so. Here are some examples that I have come across recently: 1) There were 64 spectators at the Tara Woods Magic Softball game, 2) My neighbors checked my mailbox every day for 5 days and brought it in while I was away, 3) Two gentlemen

OUR KNITTING NEIGHBORS I thought you would like to know about the ladies who knit hats and sweaters to help others keep warm. In our church newsletter, it was reported that they had sent some hand-knitted hats to the Indian children in Montana. I mentioned this to my neighbor, Bette Davis, who I knew knitted hats. She said she had some to donate and came over with four very large bags full! Needless to say, our church was extremely appreciative that so many more will be helped. Bette has been knitting hats for many years and has given them to places in Tenn., Va., Mich.,

N.Y. and Ireland. Two others from Tara Woods, Carole Clark and Nete Godfrey, have knitted some hats to give through Bette, too. Also, Erika Futrell knits hats and sweaters and gives them to Bette to donate. I thought you’d like to know some of the good things being done here. Thank you, knitters! We would love to hear of other good things people in Tara Woods do. I know that we have caring people who do volunteering, etc. Like, Fred Hoar who volunteers four days a week at Southwest Regional and has for many years. Over the

years, Linda and Warren Engel, Henri and Royce La Liberty, and Kathy and Roger Rafferty have served Christmas dinner to underprivileged people in the Fort Myers area. Jack Boylan has free bikes to loan and will fix bikes for free. You just pay for the parts. Jack needs two or three 3-wheeled bicycles. Call him if you have one. What else do Tara Woods residents do? How about sharing it with us? Name withheld at author’s request

THE DAY OF CARING REPORT FOR 2016 Another successful year for the Day of Caring annual fund drive. The total donations received by the three communities were $13,924. By community, donations collected were: Pine Lakes $9,370, Tara Woods $2,304, and Lake Fairways $2,250, totaling $13,924. Each of the three charities received $4,600. For the Thanksgiv-

ing Day holiday $3,400 and for the Christmas Day holiday $1,200, totaling $4,600 each. I want to mention again the three charities involved: Fort Myers Rescue Mission, Hispanic Services of Catholic Charities, and Wake Up America. Thank you again, Tara Woods residents, for your generous contri-

butions as well as your continuous support over the past twenty-two years I have been involved with Day of Caring. It’s a great feeling to know that together we were able to make a little difference in the lives of many. John D’Amico and Irene D’Amico Day of Caring Committee

I want to thank all those who provided baked goods for the FMO meeting last month hosted by Tara Woods. I sincerely hope those of you who wanted your questions answered had them answered to your satisfaction. For quite a while the importance of membership in FMO has been stressed. While some of you felt it was someone else’s responsibility, let me take a moment to tell you why it is all OUR responsibility. Recently the State Legislature was looking at ways of increasing the states revenues. One way was to put a sales tax on your lot rent. This is the second time, in recent years FMO has been able to prevent the bill from

coming to the floor. The first time, several years, ago, the tax was going to be 6%, this time it was going to be 8%. Let’s look at the math. For argument sake, we will use $50.00 per month you would have to PAY TO THE STATE, on top of your lot rent. That amounts to $600.00 per year. What did you do with that money? New clothes, home improvements, down payment on a car or trip, savings? Looking at it another way, how would a $600.00 reduction in savings or checkbook impact your life style? For most of you I suspect the numbers would be higher. The number of FMO members over the years has been in decline.

We, you and me, need to reverse this trend because it’s possible the next time this comes up there will be no one to stop it. Membership in the FMO is $25.00 per year or 3 years for $65.00. If you join or renew and get two of your neighbors to join, who were not previously FMO members, then you receive a free year’s membership. Applications are available in the Clubhouse on the back bulletin board. Should you have questions or wish to discuss anything, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thank you, Stuart Berman

THANK YOU TARA WOODS This year the wonderful people of Tara Woods donated $930 to our annual Christmas collection for the members of the North Fort Myers Fire Department and Paramedics. This enabled us to provide the three shifts with Pub-

lix Gift Cards to purchase their Christmas dinners. It was your kindness and generosity that made this possible and we sincerely appreciate it. I would also like to thank Frank Millette and Fred Puhlfuerst for

handling the collections while I was away. Thank you all, and may you have a Happy and Healthy New Year. Chuck Poveromo

We want to thank those who have given us contributions so far towards the expenses of postage and items for the boxes. We appreciate your help. We will still need more funds for those expenses and you can give them to Beth Ferris. WE HOPE YOU ARE WORKING ON GETTING THE ADDRESSES OF THE PEOPLE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE A BOX SENT TO. To explain our project more for those not familiar with it, the Inspirations group has been sending boxes to our troops every year since 2006. We include cookies, and many treat such as, beef jerky, Granola bars, gum, trail mix, nuts, candy, snacks, oatmeal packs, paper, pens, just to name a few items. The community gives us the names and addresses of the service man or woman they know, so we can send them a box. We have received many thank yous and photos from the troops telling us how much it has meant to them, and many of them share it with others in their unit. Please give us the names and addresses soon, or no later than March 11th. The Inspirations ladies will be baking the cookies and we will purchase the other items and will pack the boxes after a coffee meeting later in March. Again, please give names, addresses and contributions to Beth Ferris 543-6295. Thank you.

“MAGIC” SOFTBALL UPDATE the national anthems for both the United States and Canada were sung by our own George Daly. A prayer was delivered and announcements were made, trophies awarded to last year’s league champions, and then it was time to play ball. One thing is for certain: we have the best and most enthusiastic following in the league. The turnout for the first game on Wednesday, January 4th was reportedly 64 fans, far more than

any other team, and on behalf of the “Magic” I want to thank you for your continued support. Even on a chilly night (Monday, January 9th the turnout was remarkable. I also want to thank all those who participated in producing our spaghetti dinner on Thursday, January 19th, and of course all who attended. We hope you all enjoyed the evening.

Well, the 2017 season has begun and despite two early setbacks (7-3 loss to Buccaneer and a 9-2 loss to Lake Fairways) along with some key early injuries, the team remains highly spirited and confident. We have twelve regular season games remaining, along with divisional games at the end of the season – plenty of chances to show our stuff. Opening night included a pregame ceremony at which all the teams mustered onto the field and

of the Tara Woods Clubhouse. Such energy and commitment and enjoyment from so many voices! What a fine way to participate in life singing to the heavens! What’s Smarter - Paying Off Debts or Investing? If you’re just starting out in your career, you will need to be prepared to face some financial challenges along the way – but here’s one that’s not unpleasant: choosing what to do with some extra disposable income. When this happens, what should you do with the money? Your decisions could make a real difference in your ability to achieve your important financial goals. Under what circumstances might you receive some “found” money? You could get a year-end bonus from your employer, or a sizable tax refund, or even an inheritance. However the money comes to you, don’t let it “slip through your fingers.” Instead, consider these two moves: investing the money or using it to pay off debts. Which of these choices should you pick? There’s no one “right” answer, as everyone’s situation is different. But here are a few general considerations: •

Distinguish between “good” and “bad” debt. Not all types of debt are created equal. Your mortgage, for example, is probably a “good” form of debt. You’re using the loan for a valid purpose – i.e., living in your house – and you likely get a hefty tax deduction for the interest you pay. On the other hand, nondeductible consumer debt that carries a high interest rate might be considered “bad” debt – and this is the debt you might want to reduce or eliminate when you receive some extra money. By doing so, you can free up money to save and invest for retirement or other goals.

Compare making extra mortgage payments vs. investing. Many of us get some psychological benefits by making extra house payments. Yet, when you do have some extra money, putting it toward your house may not be the best move. For one thing, as mentioned above, your mortgage can be considered a “good” type of debt, so you may not need to rush to pay it off. And from an investment standpoint, your home is somewhat “illiquid” – it’s not always easy to get money out of it. If you put your extra money into traditional investments, such as stocks and bonds, you may increase your growth potential, and you may gain an income stream through interest payments and dividends.

Consider tax advantages of investing. Apart from your mortgage, your other debts likely won’t provide you with any tax benefits. But you can get tax advantages by putting money into certain types of investment vehicles, such as a traditional or Roth IRA. When you invest in a traditional IRA, your contributions may be deductible, depending on your income, and your money grows on a tax-deferred basis. (Keep in mind that taxes will be due upon withdrawals, and any withdrawals you make before you reach 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but your earnings are distributed tax-free, provided you don’t take withdrawals until you reach 59½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. Clearly, you’ve got some things to ponder when choosing whether to use “extra” money to pay off debts or invest. Of course, it’s not always an “either-or” situation; you may be able to tackle some debts and still invest for the future. In any case, use this money wisely – you weren’t necessarily counting on it, but you can make it count for you.

TENNIS ASSOCIATION MEETING There was no Tennis Association Meeting in December, so there is nothing to report for this issue of the Columns. Our second meeting of the season was held on Sunday, January 22nd. Items discussed at that meeting will be published in the March issue. Our next Tennis Association Meeting is Sunday, February 26th at 5:00 PM. ROUND ROBIN Our second Round Robin of the season was held on Sunday, January 22nd. We will report on that in the March issue of the Columns. We hope to have a good turnout for our next Round Robin, which is scheduled for Sunday, February 26th. Be sure to sign up to come out and play some fun tennis that day. The more people who sign up, the better pairings we can put together. The February 26th dinner will be hosted by Val Roderick, and the courtside refreshments will be provided by Fred Puhlfuerst and Janice Johnston. – Linda Engel TENNIS DVD’s You may not be aware of this, but your Tennis Association has DVD’s available for anyone interested in improving their tennis game. If you would like to check out any of these DVD’s, contact George Daly. The topics are listed below: #1 Consistent Tennis Wins – The Original #2 Strategy for Singles and Doubles #3 The Serve #4 The Backhand #5 Grooving Consistent Strokes #6 Return of Serve #7 Get to the Net and Win #8 Specialty Shots APPRECIATION DAY Appreciation Day this year is on Saturday, February 25th. I am

very happy to report that Mike and Linda Renzulli have agreed to take over the “Hole in the Board” game from Warren & Linda Engel, who have been overseeing this game for the past five years. A big “Thank You” is extended to Mike and Linda for taking charge of this game. George and Janet Daly have confirmed to me that they will again chair the “Bowling” tennis game, and George and Janice Johnston have also agreed to again chair the “Hit the Chairs” game. Another possibility for a tennis game which would be played on Court 4 is to hit a tennis ball into a container similar to our blue recycling bins. (Putting a thick towel in the bottom of the container would help keep the balls from bouncing out.) Please consider volunteering to run a game like this. If anyone has any other ideas for another tennis game, please let us know. Wouldn’t it be great to have a game on all four tennis courts! We need workers to help run these tennis games, so if you’re asked to help out, please say “Yes”. – Linda Engel TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE We didn’t have any scores to report before the deadline for this issue of the Columns, as our first competitive match of the New Year was not until Thursday, January 12th against the Six Lakes Seagulls. We were then scheduled to play the other Six Lakes team, the Pelicans, on January 19th. Both were away games. Eventually we were able to play on our own home courts as we hosted Sabal Springs on January 26th. We had another away game scheduled against Herons Glen on February 2nd. That game marked the end of the first half of our tennis schedule. We hope to give you good results from those matches in the March issue of the

Columns. – Linda Engel MEN’S LEAGUE Red League The Tara Woods Stallions battled like Warrior Poets against the Pine Lakes team but fell short, losing 2-4 in their efforts on Wednesday, January 11th. We have had some great pairings and matches as of late, and will continue to bring our best to play and a better outcome. We are missing John Goers who is in recovery of health, and our juggernaut in Glen Fisher who is battling a torn meniscus in his right knee. We wish them Godspeed and quick return to good health. – Dakota Windancer White League As of press time, the White Team had a win-loss record of 1818 which equates to a 50% win. That puts us about in the middle of the pack of 10 community teams. Our goal is to go in a positive direction and at the same time to enjoy the friendship and fun of the game – be positive!! Hope to see you at our Tuesday afternoon (1:00 PM) games that are posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board at the courts. – Royce La Liberty Blue League We are now about one-third of the way thru the season and our best guess (without seeing the most recent results) is that we are most likely tied for last place. It’s not that we are not trying hard, or that our cheering section has let us down, or that the days were too hot – pure and simple, the competition was just a little better than the Tigers. We should have a full roster sometime during January, at which time things may turn around for us. In addition, the beer is still cold, the jokes are still corny, and we have a lot of fun. – Bill Powers Submitted by Linda Engel

The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday is devoted to Computer Basics, a beginner’s course on how to use your computer. The second and fourth Thursdays are General subjects, and cover a single specific topic. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session; ask me any-

thing you want. Last month we looked at Microsoft Picture It photo editing software and started a multi-part lesson on Working With Photos. In our Computer Basics sessions we finished going over the desktop fundamentals and many of the topics common to almost any program, as well as the roles and differences of programs and files. This month we will continue with Photos, from selecting a digital camera to organizing and editing your pictures, and how to print, use, and share the finished result. We plan to start a mini-course on Microsoft Office, concentrating on Word, the word processor, and Excel, the spreadsheet. In Basics, we will learn how to organize your files and folders on your computer, and look at the Paint and Wordpad programs that are included free with every version of Windows.

It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St.Laurent, The Computer Tutor

The Garden Club meeting is Saturday, February 11th, immediately after pancake breakfast. This is the only meeting before the Trash and Treasure, and we will be planning our luncheon, in April, which is open ONLY to Garden Club Members A reminder to the new members who signed up during the Opportunity Fair and anyone who wants to join. Please come to this meeting. To all, we will be collecting dues at this meeting. Dues are $5.00 please, in an envelope with your name and contact number. I want to remind everyone that the donations to the Trash and Treasure make it possible for the Fashion Show to be a Free Event. So, please, if you have items that are clean and useable that you are giving away, hold onto them until Friday, March 3rd. To all our wonderful volunteers, please put this date on your calendar. At 9:00 AM we will need to move tables and set up for the sale. Also, the next day, Saturday after 1:00 PM we need to put tables back in place. This year’s Trash and Treasure is Saturday, March 4th. I also want to mention that some of

our monies are used to care for the butterfly garden near the gazebo, and we make donations to CROW and ECHO. If you don’t know about these organizations, please take the time to look them up on the internet. The Garden Club is still looking for one or two people with the time and energy to help keep up the butterfly garden. New ideas are always welcome. Rachelle DellaRocca My new contact number: 322-6386 What to Do Lawns: Fertilize lawns this month. Choose one (not a weed and feed) with no or very little phosphorus unless a soil test indicates the need for it. A fertilizer with controlled- release nitrogen will give longer lasting results. See: Your Florida Lawn Bahia grass for Florida Lawns Bermuda grass for Florida Lawns Centipede grass for Florida Lawns St. Augustine grass for Florida Lawns Zoysia grass for Florida Lawns Prune Roses: Roses should be pruned this month to reduce and improve the overall form. After pruning, fertilize and apply a fresh layer of mulch. Blooming will begin eight to nine weeks after pruning. See: Grow-

ing Roses in Florida Fertilize Shrubs and Palms: Spread fertilizer evenly over the soil surface and water in. Follow with a fresh layer of mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Hold off pruning colddamaged branches until new growth starts. See: Fertilization and Irrigation Needs for Florida Lawns and Landscapes Lawn Weeds: Apply a pre-emergent weed killer (not a weed and feed) to lawns this month to prevent germination of warm season weed seeds. Apply when temperatures rise to 65°F for 4-5 days. Timing is important for good control. See: Weed Management in Home Lawns Spray: When avocados and mango have lost 2/3 of blossoms, spray copper fungicide to control anthracnose. See: Diseases of Avocado in Florida. Some Common Diseases of Mango in Florida Fruits: If not done in January, fertilize fruit trees including citrus now. ENTERTAINING NEWS 25th Anniversary So, Ladies and Gentlemen…..most people have wondered “What do our Nuns do behind the walls of the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing convent?” If you attend either of our performances of “Drinking Habits” it will be made perfectly clear to you. There might be some surprises to you and to Mother Superior when we all discover what Sister Augusta and Sister Philomena are up to. And why are there reporters in the convent, looking into who is sewing what? Make sure you get your tickets to the show: Tickets go on sale from Saturday, February 11th until the show closes on Saturday, March 11th. Available at Saturday Coffee and before Tuesday

Bingo – also at the door of each performance. l Ticket price is $7.00. l Friday, March 10th and Saturday, March 11th. l Doors open at 6:30 PM. l Theater seating available; ask an usher for assistance if needed. Front row for those who want to be closer to the stage. NO FOOD/DRINK ALLOWED INTO CLUBHOUSE. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. Our actors have put great effort in this production and we all hope that you come out and support us, but also that you enjoy the production, as you

have for 25 years. Entertainers’ first show was in 1992 and here we are celebrating our 25th Anniversary. Thanks to all who made this possible. A note to anyone interested, the next Entertainers Business meeting is scheduled for 9:00 AM on Saturday, February 18th. From now on Entertainers meetings will be starting at 9:00 AM. Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.
