What a wonderful time everyone had at the Tara Woods

Christmas Party. Good food from Beef O’Brady’s, wonderful music by John’s Mobile Music – I don’t think I’ve seen so many people up and dancing as I did that night, and beautiful Holiday decorations on the tables. A huge thank you to the

New England Club and its many members who helped make the Tara Woods Christmas Party a success – especially to Judy Machnicz, the Party emcee. It could not have been as successful as it was without you all!!

Wishing Everyone A Very Happy New Year!

FROM THE PRESIDENT should have received your notice in the mail and have all the information you need to vote on the 2017 Budget and Election of Board members. I hope to see you there. The Community Opportunity Fair in November was very well received. There were 20 groups represented, with lots of information, food and freebies given away. Thank you so much to all those who participated by hosting a table and to those who came to the Fair. Even though I received many positive comments, I would like your input as to how to make this event even more inviting to everyone. Please put your thoughts in writing and give them to me or e-mail me at janetdaly@ yahoo.com. The next three months are filled with numerous opportuni-

ties to participate in the active Tara Woods lifestyle. I hope you will take advantage of as many of them as you can. APPRECIATION DAY GAMES The Appreciation Day Games Chairman is looking for volunteers to assist with the various games on Saturday, February 25th from 12:00 to 2:30 PM. The games are variations of: softball toss, bocce, horseshoes, shuffleboard, tennis, basketball foul shots, golf putting and chipping, bean bag toss and beanbag baseball. There are perks for volunteering; you get to eat early and you receive tickets for the prize drawings to be held that night. Also, it’s a good way to meet some of your neighbors as they participate in the games. Each game has a captain who will contact you if you decide to help, so if you can help for ½ hour to 1 hour, there is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse or you can call Mary or Bill Nothnagel at 5671192 or 732-822-6300. The games are only a success if we have volunteers to oversee them, so give it a thought and help out. Thank you in advance for volunteering. - Bill Nothnagel

“MAGIC SOFTBALL”

There will be a signup list for baking cookies on the bulletin board at the end of February and beginning of March, or call Beth Ferris or Ann Scott. Every year we receive many thanks for the boxes received and we thank you for your support of this project. You have always been very generous, and we thank you. This is truly a communitywide project and a worthwhile one to show our servicemen and women that we care and are thinking of them. Many times, besides their letters thanking us, they include photos, and say they share with their unit, etc. Thank you for your part in sending out the boxes! Beth Ferris

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN (AAUW) FT. MYERS/LEE COUNTY BRANCH The 23rd Annual Style Show was held on Saturday, December 3rd at Grandezza Country Club Estates in Estero, Florida by AAUW Fundraiser. They support the Advancement of Women. The Ft. Myers/Lee County Branch alone has made a difference in Lee County for over 50 years. In addition to annual awards to worthy local programs, the branch has over $90,000 in endowed scholarships. At 11:00 AM we entered Grandezza to view and bid on raffles and silent auction items. There was a Fashion Show at noontime presented by Chico’s at Bell Tower Shops in Ft. Myers. Following the Fashion Show a most deli-

cious lunch was served. Then the auctions, raffles, money hat and door prizes were distributed prior to the conclusion of the Show. Approximately 30 area artists and businesses donated products or certificates which made up the many prizes. Five of the lovely models, all of whom are members of AAUW, participated. They certainly did a professional job. A good time was had by all, especially those who were fortunate enough to win. Our group, consisting of 8 women, were fortunate enough to have 5 winners at our table alone! They were: Marilyn Workman, Carol Andrews, Nancy Wuebbeler, Ann Kabbas, and Lou Cashin.

The lunch, prizes, raffle, and silent auction were most enjoyable thanks to Marilyn Workman who has been an active member for the AAUW Fundraiser for many years and nice enough to include us in this pleasant afternoon affair. Ann Kabbas

JUDY BRDA CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS WITH HER WATER AEROBICS GROUP On Friday, December 2nd, our traditional get-together Christmas Celebration was held. At this time, and for the first time, we decorated our Water Aerobics Christmas Tree with colorful noodles. Talk about fun! This group really knows how to get things done and done, with enthusiasm. The food and drinks were plentiful and delicious. And as always so was the laughter and fun. So come, let’s get together; join our Water Aerobics Group on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8:00 AM. You’ll be glad you did, and then you will be just in time to celebrate with us at our semiannual get-together. Our thanks to Judy for inspiring us, and keeping us fit mentally as well as physically as only she knows how. And another thank you to Mary Costantini who substituted for Judy and to Lori Thomas for her lovely Christmas outfit and gifts to every one of us. How sweet are they? Thanks again. By the way, I think we convinced Judy to have these celebrations every 4 months! The crowd cheered to this!!! See ya in April. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year – 2017! - Ann Kabbas

tickets. The Mid-Atlantic Club had its Christmas Party Buffet at Bianca’s Restaurant on Sunday, December 11th. This was a private party, the restaurant being closed to other diners. We, as always, had a good meal and a great turnout and it was a really fun event! Our Sunday, January 15th meeting will be a planning and work session in preparation for the community-wide Valentine’s Day celebration on Sunday, February 12th. Mid-Atlantic is sponsoring the event this year with the “Del Prados” providing the entertainment. We are excited about this opportunity to bring one of the favorite singing groups in the area back to Tara Woods. Saturday Morning Coffee on January 14th will be the first day of ticket sales. The tickets always go quickly for this event, so hurry in to reserve your seating.

NEW YORK/ NEW JERSEY CLUB

Our December meeting/Christmas Party was a big success. It was hosted by Carole and Ken Clark and friends. They outdid themselves with the traditional antipasto trays with help from John and Mary Costantini. The Italian pastas and meat dishes were delicious and the desserts were great. I don’t think anyone went home hungry. Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, January 8th at 4:00

PM and will be hosted by Agatha Breen and friends. It will be our Soup, Stews and Chowder night. Sign-up sheets are on the bulletin board. We would appreciate it if you would sign the sheets and let us know what you are bringing. We will be playing the game Show Me The Money run by George D’Alessandro and friends. It is a lot of fun. Just remember to bring single dollar bills. I hope to see you there. Wishing you all a Very Happy New Year. Agatha Breen

A huge thank you to the many New England Club members who helped make the Tara Woods Christmas Party a success. We could not have accomplished this without all of you!! The New England Christmas party was held on Saturday, December 10th, and we were happy to welcome 8 more new members. The club enjoyed a delicious prime rib dinner prepared by Chef Stew Franklin, and his great assistants: Mike Renzulli and Ron and Sue Proulx. We thank you for all your hard work both in planning and executing this dinner party. Our tree has to be un-deco-

This is our “Glad we’re not in New England” party, where we will enjoy a warm winter menu of New England Clam and Corn chowders as well as cornbread and biscuits prepared by our very special

When You Retire, Where Can You Find Investment Income? As an investor, your main goals will change at different times in your life. During your working years, you need to grow as many resources as possible for retirement. Once you retire, however, you will likely need to focus more on getting income from your investments. But what are your options? There’s no shortage of income-producing investments, of course. You might immediately think of bonds, which can provide regular interest payments and probable preservation of principal, provided the bonds are considered “investment grade.” Still, if interest rates are low when you retire – as they have been for several years now – bonds might not provide you with as much income as you need. And just as importantly, the income you receive from most bonds won’t rise over time, leaving you susceptible to inflation and the loss of purchasing power. Consequently, you may also need to explore other types of income-generating vehicles, including dividend-paying stocks and real estate investment trusts (REITs). Some stocks have not only paid but also increased their dividends for many consecutive years. These stocks have historically provided the potential for rising income to help combat inflation and are typically well-run companies that strive to reward their investors. Nonetheless, you need to recognize that even these stocks are not obligated to pay you dividends, and they are free to lower or discontinue them at any time without notice. Now, let’s turn to a second type of potential income-producing asset: Real estate investment trusts (REITs). Different types of REITs are available. For example, equity REITs invest in and own commercial properties, such as hotels and shopping centers, while mortgage REITs, as the name suggests, own and invest in property mortgages. Is one form of REIT better than another? There’s no simple answer. On the one hand, mortgage REITs are considered riskier than equity REITs. However, mortgage REITs often pay quite large dividends, although the payout can be inconsistent. (Like all REITs, mortgage REITs must pay 90% of their taxable income to investors in the form of dividends. Due to this requirement, REITs generally need to raise capital to finance their growth plans, and this necessity can affect their share prices.) Other factors, such as changing interest rates, will affect the value of mortgage and equity REITs differently. Specifically, rising interest rates will likely cause the market value of the property mortgages inside mortgage REITs to fall, whereas equity REITs, which own actual buildings, might actually benefit if the Federal Reserve raises interest rates, as such a move would indicate a strong economy, more jobs and greater demand for office space. In the short term, though, even equity REITs can react negatively to an interest-rate increase. But over the long term, this movement can be offset by the benefits of earnings and dividend growth driven by a growing economy. Clearly, there’s much to think about when considering potential income-producing options such as bonds, dividend-paying stocks and REITs. Ultimately, you will need to weigh the merits and risks of these investments – including interest rate risk, credit risk and market risk – and determine which of them, or which combination of them, are most appropriate for your needs.

TENNIS ASSOCIATION MEETING Our first Tennis Association Meeting of the new season was held on Sunday, November 27th. Some of the items discussed are listed below. Fred Puhlfuerst and Dick Heffron volunteered to be on the Nominating Committee to select new officers for our Tennis Association. Frank Neveu will order new net straps, new scoring trees due to last year’s cracking, and two new windsocks. One of the covers on the benches needs repair. It was reported in last February’s Columns that we would be getting an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) for the tennis courts. Later, we were told by Doug Objartel from the Office that it wasn’t in the budget. Frank will contact Nancy Wuebbeler, a board member of the Tara Woods Homeowners Association, concerning Hometown America purchasing an AED for the tennis courts. When anyone notices that we are in need of supplies for the First Aid Kit, we are to contact Bill Hampton. Also, Frank Neveu suggested we could contact him, and he would then get in touch with Bill Hampton. A yearly fundraiser event for community relations, the recruitment of new members, and generating funds for other tennis activities, events, supplies, etc. was voted on. About half of the meeting attendees agreed that this was a great idea. The event will be further discussed at the January 22nd meeting. The ongoing topic of whether or not all league members must become a member of the Tennis Association was discussed again. Glen Fisher, Art Frederick, and Liz Wilson volunteered to have discussions with league captains to promote the benefits that the Tennis Association has to offer to all league players when they become a member. Fred Puhlfuerst will teach tennis lessons on Fridays at 11:00 AM. There are five new people interested in lessons as a result of the Community Opportunity Fair. Warren Engel has agreed to help Fred if needed. Dakota Windancer will further discuss tennis opportunities and

competitive tournaments with Pine Lakes. These events would include Del Tura, Tara Woods, Lake Fairways, and Pine Lakes. Janet and George Daly have volunteered to host the dinner for the January 22nd Round Robin, and Al Dion will provide the courtside refreshments. For February 26th, Val Roderick will host the dinner, and Fred Puhlfuerst and Janice Johnston will provide the courtside refreshments. For March 26th, Carol Neveu and Connie Lessard will host the dinner, and Liz Wilson will provide the courtside refreshments. Our next Tennis Association Meeting is Sunday, January 22nd at 5:00 PM. – Arlene Franchini ROUND ROBIN There were 23 people who came out to play tennis in our first Round Robin of the season on Sunday, November 27th. We had 15 men and only 8 women, but it looked like everyone was having a great time on the courts. The sun was shining and the temperature was warm. Refreshments, supplied by Kathy Rafferty, kept us hydrated and satisfied. Later, a great dinner of tacos and taco salad, both chicken and beef, was served by Arlene Greene and Janell Wissler. Dessert was Arlene’s homemade brownies—oh, how delicious! The dinner was enjoyed by 38 people. – Linda Engel TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE The Tara Woods Angels have played only two matches this season. We evenly split both matches in November, winning 3 sets and losing 3 sets, against both Pine Lakes and Lake Fairways. To get us through the holidays, three round robins with the other teams in our league were scheduled for early December. We have a bye on January 5th and we won’t play a competitive match again until January 12th against Six Lakes. – Linda Engel MEN’S LEAGUE Red League The Tara Woods Stallions were bridled and tamed in their last two meetings. We had a match with Sabal Springs as visitors to their courts

of clay on Wednesday, December 14th. Our best efforts have been resulting in losses as of late. We are going to have to find how to tap into the “Tara Woods Magic” real soon to turn things around and begin 2017 with winning ways! – Dakota Windancer White League As of press time, the White Team has a win-loss record of 8-10, which equates to about a 44% win. That puts us about in the middle of the pack – BUT – most important, the Tara Woods White Team suffered its most serious loss this month. We lost our illustrious Team Captain, Gerry Gagnon, to---Canada! Gerry and his bride, Terry, decided, due to personal reasons, to sell their home here in Tara Woods and move back to Canada. As luck would have it, they received an offer to purchase their dream home on Kara Circle within 8 days of showing. But, not all is lost; he threatened to return to Tara Woods next season, but as a renter. So, if anyone should know of a reasonable (almost free) rental at that time, I’m sure he would appreciate a call. I know the White Team will miss him. So long for now, Gerry, and God be with you!!! P.S. An election was held by the White Team players and Royce lost. Guess who the next captain will be…yep…Royce. – Royce La Liberty Blue League The first game of the season was a tough one for some of the players – many, many deuce games and finally a tie breaker. It ended after 1½ hours and the Tara Woods Tigers were victorious. After the first week of play we were in a three-way tie for first place. Then came the second match of the season and we didn’t fare as well as the first match. This time of year most teams do not have a full roster of regular players – some people are traveling, some have family obligations or doctor visits. This situation should settle down in early January. The bottom line is that everyone had a good time and lots of beer. – Bill Powers Linda Engel

TARA WOODS

The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month is devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer. The second and fourth Thursdays are reserved for General subjects, and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. Our regular season of classes began in December. We selected the topics that we will cover this year, started on the fundamentals of using your computer, and looked at the Windows Essentials software download and Photo Gallery. These subjects will be continued in January. As the season progresses, we plan to include how to work with photos (from buying a digital camera through creating and sharing photo projects), the Microsoft Word word processor, and the Excel spreadsheet

program. This will provide a good basis for almost anything you want to do on your PC. Additional topics will be added as time allows. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. This is a great time to learn the Basics; we start at the very beginning and assume that you know nothing about computers. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 6520488. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St.Laurent, The Computer Tutor

The Garden Club is looking for volunteers who like to garden; we need one or two people who will care for the butterfly garden located near the Gazebo. The Garden has a watering system that needs to be checked on and the plants in pots need to be watered by hand. New ideas are always welcome. Julian cleans and trims the garden. Anyone interested please call Rachelle DellaRocca, 322-6386 Rachelle DellaRocca JANUARY WHAT TO PLANT Bedding Plants: Plants that can be added to the garden during the coolest months include begonia, browallia, lobelia, dianthus, dusty miller, and nicotiana. Bulbs: Winter is a great time to plant bulbs that will bloom this spring. Some to try are Clivia lily, crinum, and agapanthus. Herbs: Many herbs will thrive now that temperatures are cooler, including tarragon, thyme, dill, fennel, and any of the mints. Vegetables: Continue planting cool season crops including beet, cabbage, turnip, lettuce, and broccoli.

JANUARY WHAT TO DO Rejuvenate the landscape: After the danger of freezing temperatures, it’s a good time to plant woody shrubs. Water frequently to get new plantings off to a good start. Irrigation: Plants may need water if temperatures remain higher than normal and rainfall is scarce. Shrubs and Trees: Prune nonspring flowering shrubs and trees this month to improve form. Arbor Day: Florida observes Arbor Day on the 3rd Friday of January. To celebrate, plant a tree in your yard or community. Cold Protection: If a frost or freeze is predicted, bring sensitive plants like orchids inside. Water sensitive plants in the landscape thoroughly 12-24 hours before a freeze and cover. Pests: To control scale on citrus, shrubs, and deciduous fruit trees, apply horticultural oil while plants are dormant. Apply copper spray to mangos after bloom. I want to remind everyone that the donations to the Trash and Treasure make it possible for the Fashion Show to be a Free Event. Please, if you have items that are clean and usable that you are giving away, hold onto them until Friday, March 3rd. This year’s Trash and Treasure is Saturday, March 4th All Garden Club members, please remember since everyone is busy with the different clubs, we voted to have limited meetings. Our NEXT meeting is Saturday, February 11th, immediately after pancake breakfast. Please note the date of the meeting; it was incorrect in the December Columns. This is the only meeting before the Trash and Treasure, and we will be planning our luncheon. A reminder to the new members who signed up during the Opportunity Fair and anyone else who wants to join, please come to this meeting. To all: We will be collecting dues at this meeting. Dues are $5.00 place in an envelope with your name and contact number.

ENTERTAINING NEWS So Ladies and Gentlemen….. I do want to say congratulations from the Entertainers to our winners from the Opportunity Fair. Chuck Poveromo won 2 tickets to Florida Rep, Ken Clark won 2 tickets to Cultural Park, Bob Cooney won 2 tickets to our play Drinking Habits in March, and winning the champagne with balloons were Lloyd Kelsey, Stu Berman and Sheila Piganelli. We give our congratulations again to the winners and thanks for stopping by our booth. We hope to see you at the next Community Opportunity Fair. January has arrived and from where I hail from this means snow, cold, sleet and hail. But here in SW Florida it

with your applause and laughter. As a note and reminder: We do not allow food nor drink in the Clubhouse for this production. Also, there will be theater seating up front and cabaret tables for those who choose. Tickets will be on sale one month before the performance and I will let you know the price in later Column articles. So for now (as we are sailing in the Caribbean) take care and keep laughter in your life; it keeps you young. Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart. means chilly mornings and warm afternoons, maybe trips to the beach or sitting in the sun enjoying a beverage. Ahhh, the good life. Another way to look at January is our actors are not using their books while on stage at rehearsal. Also we are fine tuning the bits and pieces that make our productions the work of art that they are; well at least to us we see it that way. We have high hopes to see a packed house on Friday, March 10th and Saturday, March 11th for our production. To the new people in our community, we put on one show a year and this is your chance to become part of the production by being in the audience and encouraging our band of merry folks

during the evening. • Try to have motion activated lights installed on driveway entries. • Never leave your golf cart key in the ignition. • Always lock your house and shed, and auto at night Robert Glandorf
