Tennis Social Event Submitted by Glen Fisher

O

n Sunday, January 24th we held a fun 32-player mixed social event. We had eight teams of four players each. We lucked out in the weather department; it was cool and sunny, no wind or rain!!! It was truly a great day. This mixed 32-player format was used for the first time as an alternative to the regular Round Robin format. Each team played three sets against other equal strength team players. We were fortunate to have two experienced photographers taking many pictures during the day. As you can see from these pictures, we are in training to play in the U.S. Open Tennis in New York later this summer!!! During the day, we had a good supply of refreshments, thanks to Arlene Greene and Janell Wissler. (Those homemade cookies sure were good, Arlene!) People also came to watch the activities and joined in the fun. In the early evening, 44 people enjoyed a selection of wraps and a cheese tray. To top it off, we had ice

cream for dessert. Thank you to Carole and Frank Neveu for hosting this dinner. Like all new ideas, there were suggestions on how to improve upon this new format. Using these suggestions, a mixed player event was planned for Sunday, February 28th. Again, three sets were to be played, but partners were changed for each set. The pairings were made so that equal strength players were matched up to play against each other. No scores were to be recorded. We will report on the success of this new Round Robin format in the April Columns. We are open to suggestions on how to grow the tennis membership through our tennis social activities.

WELCOME NEW RESIDENTS Larry N. Trotter, Sr. will be a full-time resident at 19496 Omega Road once he sells his farm in Virginia and some of his antique cars. He is originally from South Carolina and is retired. He has 2 children and 4 grandchildren, 2 sets of twin girls. His hobbies are antique cars and golf. John and Barbara Bakun are part-time residents at 2773 Orlenes Street. They are from Michigan where Barbara owns a gift shop called Navajo Trading Post. They have 3 children and 11 grandchildren. They both enjoy boating, and Barbara enjoys playing cards and other game activities. Jim Bishop and Tracy Baugher are part-time residents at 19540 Cotton Bay

from Tennessee. They are both self employed, Jim at the Lochmoor Country Club. They have 2 children and 1 grandchild. They enjoy fishing and boating, and Tracy also enjoys sports, crafts and games. Sheila Hodgins is a part-time resident at 2876 Steamboat Loop. Sheila is from Lucan, Ontario, Canada. She is retired after 30 years working at Canada Trust as a Management Accountant. She is currently the Treasurer and Funding Co-coordinator for the Lucon Heritage and Donnelly Museum. She has 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren. She enjoys playing cards, working on her computer, ceramics, walking and volunteering. Sheila enjoys meeting new people and

MANAGER’S CORNER is looking forward to joining in the fun at Tara Woods. Ron and Bobbie Mester are new full-time residents at 2630 Macon Circle. They are originally from Michigan where Ron is retired from the Ford Motor Company, but Bobbie is not retiring from being a housewife and homemaker. They enjoy playing cards. Ron’s hobbies are bowling and boating; Bobbie enjoys gardening. They are the parents of 3 children and grandparents of 4 grandchildren. Welcome to Tara Woods, Joanne Byrne

Home and lot care: It is the responsibility of the homeowner to make sure that their home and lot are properly maintained, especially during the summer months. House signs with resident’s name and house number must be attached to the light post. If a new name sign is required, please call the office for the phone number of the person that makes the signs. Upon walking throughout the community at night I am noticing a number of lights not working. It is the responsibility of the resident to have these in good working order. If your exterior light fixture fails, make sure the light bulb is replaced. A burned out light bulb is the most common cause of failure.

We don’t like to think about hurricane season, but it is approaching. Please ensure that your palm trees are being taken care of. Dead palm fronds can blow off rather easily and can damage your neighbor’s property for costly repairs. Lot rents: If the 9th or 10th of the month falls on a Saturday or Sunday (as was the case in January) and you drop your payment off in the lock box at the Clubhouse, your payment will not be posted until the 11th and you will be charged late fees. If your payment is mailed to the Tara Woods Office, please mail it to get here before the 10th. Most mail is now taking at least 7 days. Doug Objartel Community Manager

FROM THE PRESIDENT This cold, windy weather is taking its toll on event attendance, and I can’t blame anyone for wanting to hibernate. We’re just not used to this for so long a period of time. I keep remembering how hot it was this summer, but that hasn’t helped to keep me any warmer. The snowbirds may be enjoying this, but the rest of us are bundled up at 50°. I just wish it would make up its mind. March is so packed full of stuff to do, hopefully no one will notice the weather. The Entertainers’ Show, “Senior Follies” on March 11th and 12th, is one you won’t want to miss, for only $7.00/ticket! I hope you have your tickets for the St. Patrick’s Day Party on Thursday, March 17th. Easter is on March 27th. If you’re heading north to be with family, I hope you’ll return in time for the New Image Chorus Concert on Friday, April 1st. The Magic Softball team plays on Monday and Wednesday evenings through March. They love having the stands full of fans, so come out and cheer them on. The tennis teams also enjoy the fans in the stands, and don’t forget the TWHA meeting on Monday, March 7th at 7:00 PM. It’s important that you be aware of the actions of your Association. At the February meeting of the TWHA, Paul Montelaro was welcomed back to his position as Treasurer, and thanks was given to John D’Amico for taking over the

daily business of the Treasurer in Paul’s absence. The Club presidents were reminded of the planning meeting on Saturday, March 12th at 10:30 AM to decide which clubs or groups are hosting the major parties for next season. Anyone interested in getting a group together to host a party is invited to attend. Lou Dunning spoke about a Fall Prevention Program that will be presented by Home Health Services on Thursday, March 10th from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM – pizza included. Please sign up on the bulletin board for this worthwhile program. The photos for the community picture directory are in progress. A great effort has been made to get everyone to participate in this project. You might still be able to take part if there is space available in the early March dates. Call Joanie Byrnes at 652-3446 to find out if space is available. You will receive a free 8x10" photo and a Directory. This is a great way to get to know your neighbors, so you are encouraged to participate. Bob Glandorf has initiated a “Silver Alert” program to be used when a resident wanders off and may not be able to find their way home. He has coordinators and a large group of people willing to search throughout the community when alerted. There is a flyer on the bulletin board with more information. Thanks, Bob, for initiating this program in Tara Woods. Some concerns were raised re-

garding behavior at the pool, and others expressed their concerns to me privately for safety and security within the community. If you have visitors, please make them aware of the rules and regulations in the community. These are in the Rules and Regulations section of your Prospectus. If you are new to Tara Woods, please take time to read this document. Tara Woods is a beautiful community where we’ve always felt safe and secure. The rules in place are sensible and are there to assure the comfort and safety of everyone. The rules for the pool are posted at the pool, as well. Please be aware of them and abide by them. I look forward to seeing you at the next TWHA Meeting on Monday, March 7th at 7:00 PM.

Recently, I was asked by several FMO members who belong to the Cross Country Motor Club why I don’t talk about it. So here goes. The Cross Country Motor Club provides year-round protection for just pennies a day. For less than ten cents a day you are guaranteed you won’t be stuck out on the road alone without emergency protection. This includes the primary member, spouse or significant other. The Cross Country Motor Club is the largest independently owned automobile club in the country. Cross Country Motor Club services include, but are not limited to 24-hour Emergency Road Service, custom computerized trip rout-

ing, reimbursement for emergency travel expenses, emergency message service, auto/truck/rv rental discounts, hotel/motel discounts, significant other covered at no additional cost and much more. There is only one catch. To get all these services and more for only $35.00 per year you must be a member of the FMO. Here is an opportunity to join FMO, protect yourself and family, while supporting your community for just pennies a day. Remember you need FMO and FMO needs you. Thank you, Stu Berman

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated in any way in our January 30th Yard Sale. This event is getting bigger every year, but I think we may have hit our maximum this time. The only thing missing was cotton candy and carnival rides. Everyone who purchased a table appeared to have made money and was very happy with their efforts. This was truly a community effort. I especially want to thank the “Horseshoe Crew” for setting up and tearing down all the tables. This

TREASURES OF TARA

Bill and Lorraine Milligan have hearts of gold and their compassion and goodness overflows from their hearts. Billy was born in the Bronx and moved to Manhattan. He played sports and “peeled potatoes” in the summer for pocket money. At age 16, life changed for him when his father suddenly died. Bill, his mother, and sister, Marybeth, moved to Plains, Penn., where he completed high school. At 18 he entered the Navy and served from 1959 to 1962. Upon returning home he had a variety of jobs, but it was at Friden Machine Company that he developed his skill and love to fix machines.

MAGIC SOFTBALL Second win for the Season. All are hoping for another win.

He married, had 3 children and raised them in Penn. His son, Robert, and daughter-in-law presently live between Bradenton and Switzerland and they visit frequently. Lorraine lived and was schooled all her young life in Wilkes Barre, Penn. Her father, a coal miner, died in the mines when she was 9. Lorraine, an only child, was happily given a new, wonderful stepfather when she was 16. She graduated from Wilkes Barre City School of Nursing and had a long and successful career at WB General Hospital. For 43 years she specialized in Cardiac and Open Heart Care. That is probably why her generous, open heart continues to reach out to so many of the Tara Woods residents. Her short marriage produced the joy of her life, Jennifer, who is presently Assistant Principal in the Montgomery County School System in Maryland.

A miracle happened on July 14, 1993 when Bill and Lorraine met on a blind date. Lorraine was 49 years old and not interested in giving up her freedom, but Bill won her heart over with his warmth and gentle manner. They were married 1 year later and still celebrate July 14th as a very special day. They both say life began for them when they met!! Bill’s face lights up when he lovingly talks about his successful Bike and Sharpening Shop. Bill loved his customers, was good to all of them, and made many friends. Even today he generously sharpens people’s instruments and fixes their bikes. They found Tara Woods in 2002, and bought a home on Pandora Circle. After Bill’s mild heart attack in 2003, they sold the Bike Shop and moved full time to Tara Woods, buying their new home on Cloister Street. Since that day Tara

Woods has not been the same! Bill was the CAN MAN for many years and headed our recycling program. After a hurricane they would collect aluminum siding caught in trees, fallen on the streets, etc. and sold the aluminum, making a profit of $1,500. This money was given to the CERT team to buy needed medical equipment. Lorraine has dedicated herself to CERT, being on the team from the beginning. She was in charge of people with special needs who needed to be evacuated during an emergency. She was also on the Florida Federal Disaster Medical Team (and the State one, too). She has traveled to various states to help people after the hurricanes: Charlie, Hugo, Katrina, Sandy, etc. She states it was heart breaking to see people freezing without heat or homes or to be with orphaned, homeless children evacuated from Haiti to Homestead, Florida. She has helped

heal many people in pain....... In their free time they are Elders and Deacons at the Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church, or driving around in their ´53 blue Chevy, or cheering on the

Yankees, or raising butterflies, or traveling. Impressively, they are “Diamond Members” of Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruise Lines! Life began for them when they met, but life continues to sparkle and shine for all of us because of them. Lorraine might have healed hearts in Wilkes Barre but they have truly touched our hearts. TO ALL THE LOYAL “MAGIC SOFTBALL FANS”! We want to thank each and every one of you for our Spaghetti Dinner being a “Huge Success!” Our cooks, John Costantini, Ron Proulx, Ken Clark, and Bill Black, did an absolutely fantastic job of cooking the meal. George Daly helped coordinate. A “total team effort” was given by the wives who prepared everything, the players themselves delivering it; all resulted in a very enjoyable evening for everyone. The Magic Softball team has already registered a victory this year and is looking for many

more this season. Our entire Magic Softball team would like to “Thank you again for your support”. We hope to see you in the stands at one of our games (see schedule below) for we have the BEST FANS in the league. Our games are at 5:30 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays in Punta Gorda. Hope to see you at the ballpark!!! Thanks to you all. Larry Baldwin, #3 Dinner Coordinator

(Continuing Tennis from page 13) might need to be updated. Dale Holat is heading the committee to look into this. He is being helped by Gene Dickie, Kathy Rafferty, and Dakota Windancer. They were to give a brief report at the February 28th meeting. A Nominating Committee consisting of Roger Rafferty and Judy Holat will submit names of candidates for the offices of the Tennis Association. The election will take place at the April 3rd meeting. All four offices are open for new people to serve on the Tennis Association Board. If you are interested in a position on the Board, please let Roger or Judy know your wishes. Because of Clubhouse scheduling problems, we cannot hold our usual meeting and election of officers in March – and many of our members may no longer be here to attend our April 3rd meeting. This is just a reminder that according to our By-Laws, Article VI – Proxies, a member in good standing is entitled to

vote by written proxy or in person. If a proxy is used, it must be submitted, in writing, to the Association Secretary or other board member, prior to the intended meeting and can be used only for that meeting. The Tennis Association held its third meeting of the season on Sunday, February 28th. Items discussed at that meeting will be published in the April issue of the Columns. Because of a Clubhouse scheduling conflict, our usual March meeting (which is the last meeting of the tennis season) won’t be held until Sunday, April 3rd, at 5:45 PM. ROUND ROBIN The article and pictures pertaining to the January 24th Tennis Social are on the front page of this Columns. The dinner for the February 28th Tennis Social was hosted by Bob & Debbie Polenska. They served Swiss Burgers, salad, and

dessert. Gerry & Terry Gagnon provided courtside refreshments during the day. We will provide more details about this event in the April edition of the Columns. The last Round Robin of the season is scheduled for Sunday, April 3rd. The sign-up sheet will be posted early to mid March, so be sure to sign up to play that day. Because of the early deadline for the Columns, it is not known who will be hosting the dinner and who will be providing the courtside snacks for that April Round Robin. Please consider volunteering to host the dinner or the courtside snacks at one of the future Round Robins. TENNIS LESSONS If you want to learn how to play tennis or brush up on your tennis skills, come to the courts on Fridays at 10:30 AM where skilled players will help you with

(Continuing Tennis from page 16) your game. APPRECIATION DAY By the time you read this, Resident Appreciation Day will be over. This year, we had the same three tennis games that we had last year. There was the “Hole in the Board” game, the “Bowling” tennis game, and the “Hit the Chairs” game. Contrary to past years, game scores were not kept for any of the games this year, so we have nothing to report in that regard – but we do hope everyone enjoyed playing our tennis games. If anyone has any new ideas for another tennis game to be played on the tennis courts, please let us know. – Linda Engel

So, for now, I can only report on the first two matches of the second half of our schedule. For our first match on February 4th, we played the second place team from Lake Fairways. The Angels won only 1 set and lost 5 against a tough opponent. We then played our make-up match on Saturday, February 6th against the Herons Glen Eagles, where we won all 6 sets. The standings haven’t yet been reported, so we are not sure of our position in the league at this time, but I believe we are still in the top three. – Linda Engel

MEN’S LEAGUE Red League Since the New Year, we, the red team, are playing better and TENNIS LEAGUES winning more games. We are WOMEN’S LEAGUE still in last place in our division We sure had our share of rain BUT not for long!!! Cheers. – that last week in January. Many Glen Fisher league matches, including the SWIFT league play on ThursWhite League day, January 28th, got rained out. With only three matches left

in our tennis season, we may not finish in the top four out of a nine team division, but we are very satisfied with our quality of play and the enjoyment of the competition. We look forward to next year’s tennis season. – Gerry Gagnon Blue League The bleacher seats are still full and the cheering section keeps us pumped up, but we are stuck in 5th place and have been for the last few games. The coming weeks we play some teams that are more on our play level so we may pick up a position, possibly two, before the season ends. We never know from week to week how many able players we will have to fill out the roster. The same holds true for our opponents, but we all look forward to the challenge. – Bill Powers Linda Engel

How Should You Respond to Market “Correction”?

As an investor, you may be gaining familiarity with the term “market correction.” But what does it mean? And, more importantly, what does it mean to you?

A correction occurs when a key index, such as the S&P 500, declines at least 10% from its previous high. A correction, by definition, is short-term in nature and has historically happened fairly regularly – about once a year. However, over the past several years, we’ve experienced fewer corrections, so when we have one now, it seems particularly jarring to investors.

How should you respond to a market correction? The answer may depend, to some extent, on your stage of life. • If you’re still working … If you are in the early or middle parts of your working life, you might not have to concern yourself much about a market cor rection because you have decades to overcome a short-term downturn. Instead of selling stocks, and stock-based investments, to supposedly “cut your losses,” you may find that now is a good time to buy more shares of quality companies, when their price is down. Also, you may want to use the opportunity of a correction to become aware of the need to periodically review and rebalance your portfolio. Stocks, and investments containing stocks, often perform well before a correction. If their price has risen greatly, they may account for a greater percentage of the total value of your portfolio – so much so, in fact, that you might become “overweighted” in stocks, relative to your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. That’s why it’s important for you to proactively rebalance your portfolio – or, during a correction, the market may do it for you. To cite one aspect of rebalancing, if your portfolio ever does become too “stock-heavy,” you may need to add some bonds or other fixed-rate vehicles. Not only can these investments help keep your portfolio in balance, but they also may hold up better during a correction. • If you’re retired … After you retire, you may need to take money from your investment accounts – that is, sell some investments – to help pay for your cost of living. Ideally, however, you don’t want to sell stocks, or stock-based vehicles, during a correction – because when you do, you may be “selling low.” (Remember the most common rule of investing: Buy low and sell high. It’s not always easy to follow, but it’s still pretty good advice.) So, to avoid being forced into selling, you need to be prepared. During your retirement years, try to keep at least a year’s worth of cash instruments on hand as well as short-term fixed income investments. By having this money to draw on, you may be able to leave your stocks alone and give them a chance to recover, post-correction. And it’s important to maintain a reasonable percentage of stocks, and stock-based vehicles, in your portfolio, even during retirement – because these investments may provide the growth necessary to help keep you ahead of inflation. Consequently, as a retiree, you should have a balance of stocks and stock-based vehicles, along with fixed-income vehicles, such as bonds, certificates of deposit, government securities and so on. Being prepared can help you get through a correction – no matter where you are on life’s journey.
