Awesome Valentine’s Party with the Del Prados! The Del Prados did not disappoint. The Mid-Atlantic Club sponsored this year’s Valentine’s Party with the sensational Del Prados, who top the list of local performers. Over 300 people attended. It has been too long since their last performance at Tara Woods over 10 years ago. The Del Prados gave a wonderful tribute
to the “Jersey Boys” and the original “Four Seasons”. They sang songs remembered by many of us. At numerous times the whole house sang along, or you could dance the night away on the dance floor which was full most of the night. The Del Prados even had outfits to match. What a performance! Their “live” entertainment was considered by many the best event at Tara Woods in the last few years.
The strawberry shortcake went over great, thanks to the kitchen committee and its servers. They ran it very smoothly. Hats go off to all the members of the Mid-Atlantic Club, whether they took tickets, set up the hall, made the amazing decorations, worked in the kitchen, or served, as well as those who cleaned up and took care of all the other chores.
Everyone’s efforts helped to make this night a “night to remember.” A big “thank you” goes to all who attended. ~Jane Crawford

FROM THE PRESIDENT What a great winter to be in beautiful Tara Woods. We’ve had very few cold days so far. We’ve been in the 80’s while our family and friends up north are shoveling 14” of snow or more! It’s a big difference from last winter. We’re glad the “palm tree” saw its shadow down here on February 2nd with this kind of weather. The Board has been busy regrouping with the new Directors on Board. Everyone is tackling their new responsibilities with renewed enthusiasm. As the new chairman of the Community Improvement Committee, Lou Dunning has restructured his committee and their approach to management. He works closely with Nancy Wuebbeler, former Chair of the committee, and they have already managed to accomplish some much needed improvements in the recreation areas. They are always open to hear your concerns about the condition of our community and the amenities. You can also contact Committee members, Ron Proulx or Shelly Lubich. The Dog Park in the rear of the community is being upgraded with new benches and trees. The water should return soon after the pressure testing is completed. Phil Featherbay has agreed to be
the Chairman of the Rent Negotiation Committee. He is in the process of putting together his Committee. Darlene, our new Community Manager, hopes to be able to attend as many of our Association Meetings as her time permits. We welcome her at any time and look forward to getting to know her better. If you thought February was a busy month, just wait until March! The Entertainers theater group will be “entertaining” you on Friday, March 10th and Saturday, March 11th with their production of “Drinking Habits”. I urge you to get tickets to see this delightful play. I am a little prejudiced, as an actor in this production, but I know you’ll have a few laughs and be amazed by the talent of our residents. The Friday after the play, you can look forward to the Tara Woods St. Patrick’s Day Party complete with a corned beef and cabbage dinner, dancing and entertainment. The New Image Chorus ends the month with their show on Saturday, March 25th. They’re planning to dazzle you with an “American Celebration”. You don’t want to miss it! A reminder to the Club Presidents about the planning meeting on Saturday, March 11th at 10:30 AM in the Meeting Room,
to decide which clubs or groups are hosting the major parties for next season. Anyone interested in getting a group together to host a party is invited to attend. Hearty Congratulations to the Magic Softball team on their first win of the season! You can read all about it in this issue of the Columns. Let’s hope this kicks off a winning streak as they finish out the season at the end of March. Come out and support them on Monday and Wednesday evenings in Punta Gorda. Everyone has a great time! I hope to see you at the shows and parties in March and at many of the numerous opportunities to enjoy yourself in our Tara Woods community. Make sure to check the bulletin boards in the Clubhouse and make note of the many events on the calendar. I look forward to seeing you around the community and at the next Tara Woods Homeowners Association Membership Meeting on Monday, March 13th at 7:00 PM. ble companies. Please call and ask: we are here to help you. A fiveminute call can save you hundreds of dollars and a lot of heartache. If you send a letter to the Office, please sign your name. Unsigned letters will be disregarded. All information will be kept confidential. We will need a name if we need
additional information; so, please sign all correspondence. “We don’t grow when things are easy; we grow when we face challenges.”

SUNSHINE AND SYMPATHY Winter seems to be hard on all of us “more mature” types, and Tara Woods is no exception. Since I last reported, we have lost the following friends and neighbors: • Edward Gatens died on January 26th surrounded by his six daughters. • Carolyn Bishop died on February 6th. Her daughter, Wanda, will surely miss her best friend. Our sympathy goes out to their many friends and family members. We will miss them. Others who are on the “sick list” include: • Peggy Ryan is at Lee Memorial Hospital. • Claire Campbell is at home recuperating from surgery. • Ruth Simko is on the mend from a bad bug. Please let me know of any others folks who should be mentioned so that we can all send our good thoughts and cards their way. Remember that “Spring” is right around the corner and that means delightful weather here and maybe a touch of “Spring Fever”? In any case, please stay well – everyone!

FMO NEWS bill from coming to the floor. The first time, several years ago, the tax was going to be 6%: this time it was going to be 8%. Let’s look at the math. For argument sake, we will use $50.00 per month you would have to PAY TO THE STATE, on top of your lot rent. That amounts to $600.00 per year. What did you do with that money? New clothes, home improvements, down payment on a car or trip savings? Looking at it another way, how would a $600.00 reduction in savings or checkbook impact your life style? For most of you, I suspect the numbers would be higher. The number of FMO members over the years has been in decline. We, you and
me, need to reverse this trend because it’s possible the next time this comes up there will be no one to stop it. Membership in the FMO is $25.00 per year or $65.00 for 3 years. If you join or renew and get 2 of your neighbors to join, who were not previously FMO members, then you receive a free year’s membership. Applications are available in the Clubhouse on the back bulletin board. Should you have questions or wish to discuss, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

by Sam Topping “If it is to be it is up to me.”
I was in the local coffee shop recently and desperately needed to pass gas. The place was packed and the music was really loud so I figured no one would be the wiser. I timed my farts with the beat of the music. After a couple of songs I started to feel better. I finished my coffee and noticed that everyone was staring at me… And suddenly I remembered I was listening to my iPod. …and how was your day?

I want to thank all those who provided baked goods for the FMO meeting last month hosted by Tara Woods. Those of you who wanted your questions answered, I sincerely hope they were answered to your satisfaction. For quite a while the importance of membership in FMO has been stressed. While some of you felt it was some else’s responsibility, let me take a moment to tell you why it is all OUR responsibility. Recently the State Legislature was looking at ways of increasing the state’s revenues. One way was to put a sales tax on your lot rent. This is the second time in recent years that FMO has been able to prevent the

Saturday Coffee, starting at 8:00 AM, in the Clubhouse is always a good and fun way to start the day. It is a great way to meet up with old friends and to make new friends while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea and a bakery item. A short meeting brings you up-to-date on all the happenings in our community. Periodically, through the Homeowners Association, we bring in guests who have information that we feel is of interest to all of us. Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 25th. Our guest will be a representative from The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools. It was born 30 years ago by a group of concerned business leaders in our community; they realized that the cornerstone to a strong local community and economy is quality education. They offer two mentoring programs in an effort to provide at-risk youth extensive assistance, accountability, and motivation to succeed in school and go on to post-secondary education. As a mentor, the primary concern is to build a caring relationship with the student, and guide them onto a pathway of success. If you regularly come to Coffee, we will see you there. If you never attended or haven’t recently attended Coffee, join us on Saturday, March 25th for this interesting presentation and discussion. All are welcome; homeowners, renters, visitors – anyone interested in learning about the mentoring program in Lee County Schools. Sign up in the Clubhouse.
COME JOIN OUR TEAM All women tennis players are encouraged to sign up to play in the SWIFT League (Senior Women In Friendly Tennis) next season. The SWIFT League is a great place to meet new people, challenge yourself, and socialize with tennis players from other communities. We are hoping to have two women’s teams representing Tara Woods for the 2017-2018 Tennis Season, but we need more players. The sign-up sheet will be posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board by the tennis courts. We encourage you to sign up – we need you! There will be a meeting scheduled (tentatively set for Tuesday, March 28th, the time to be determined). If you have any questions, feel comfortable to talk with any of the Angels, who are listed on the Tennis Bulletin Board. Linda Engel

BOXES FOR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN The Inspirational group is again going to send boxes with cookies, treats, and useful items to our servicemen and women. We will pack up the boxes on Saturday, March 18th, around 9:30 AM, or earlier, after the meeting following Coffee. Please give names and addresses of servicemen or women to Beth Ferris by the Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, March 11th, at the latest. This will allow us time to bake, shop, etc., for the men/women we are sending boxes to this year. We thank those who have contributed towards
postage and items already, but we do need more for the expenses and would appreciate any and all contributions. There will be a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in March to volunteer to bake cookies and/or pack the boxes. I will be at the meetings in March; if you have any questions, you can call. Thank you for your part in sending the boxes. Beth Ferris, 543-6295

TARA’S TREASURES If you have ever been to Fort Lauderdale and seen a mega yacht, chances are Bill Goodhue has worked on it and fixed it. Let me start at the beginning of the beautiful, simple, love story of Barbara and Bill Goodhue. They met at the bus stop when they were 12 years old and life was never the same. Both of them grew up in Redford, Michigan. Bill graduated from Thurston High in Redford. In 1960 Barb moved to Garden City, Michigan and graduated from their high school, Garden City High. However, they continued to be friends all during high school and started dating seriously when they were 17. They married in 1966 and were blessed with three daughters, Chris, Cyndi and Caren. Barb worked a time as a secretary and then 18 years as a dental assistant. Bill was hired by Detroit Diesel and worked there from 1964
to June 2001. Detroit Diesel was owned by Roger Penske and when Roger (yes, the famous Roger Penske, race car driver) noticed Bill’s craftsmanship and dedication, he hired Bill to travel the world with him fixing the mega yachts. Bill traveled to Egypt, Spain, South France, Mexico, China, and Amsterdam. One time Barb and their daughter joined Bill in Amerstdam, and while Bill worked, Barb and their daughter traveled to Paris, Brussels, and Holland. When not boating, their life was, and is, family focused. Every Sunday their three daughters, five grandchildren and many others gather at their Michigan home and enjoy their backyard pool. Who could ask for more in life???? We thank Carol and Ron Heidmous for encouraging their good boating friends in Michigan to visit them in Tara Woods and pur-
chase a home here. Since that time, Bill has traveled to Fort Lauderdale to continue working on the yachts. Barb generously shares her leadership skills with us. She was President of the MidWest Club (the largest Tara Woods group) for three years, was active for many years on the Activities Committee and teaches a line dancing class each week. Her reputation has spread and she is presently teaching line dancing in other communities, as well. Bill has recently retired and is in the process of getting his body repaired, with a new knee and surgery on his skilled, used hands. What makes them so special? They are REAL, simple, wholesome, full-oflife and fun. What a great couple we have living among us! Mary Nothnagel

CARFIT COMES TO TARA WOODS CarFit came to Tara Woods on Tuesday, February 7th. CarFit is a National Educational Safety Program. The goal is to improve the “fit” between the driver and their vehicle. Each driver received a personal review using their own vehicle.
Thank you to all the residents who participated and made this event both possible and very successful. One of the biggest tips of the day concerned the proper adjustment of the side mirrors to help reduce blind spots. The program was brought to
Tara Woods with the help of the Lee County Sheriff’s Department. We appreciated the talented and thorough deputies and civilian volunteers who helped us this day. Lou Dunning

TO ALL THE LOYAL “MAGIC SOFTBALL FANS!” We want to Thank each and everyone of You, as our Spaghetti Dinner was a “Huge Success”! Our Cooks did an absolutely Fantastic job of cooking the meal. And there was a “Total Team effort”, of the Wives preparing everything, to the Players themselves delivering it, resulting in a very enjoyable evening for everyone. The Magic Softball Team has
just beaten our Arch Rival Del Tura Team for our first Victory this year. We are looking forward to many more this season. Our entire Magic Softball Team would like to “Thank You Again for Your Support”. We hope to see you in the stands at one of our games, as we have the BEST FANS in the league. Our games are at 5:30 PM on
Mondays and Wednesdays in Punta Gorda. Hope to SEE YOU AT THE BALLPARK!!! Thanks to You All, Larry Baldwin #3 Magic Softball Team Dinner Coordinator

TARA WOODS MAGIC SOFTBALL If you haven’t heard, the Tara Woods Softball Team won their first game of the season on February 8th against one of the best teams in the league, Del Tura! It was MAGICAL! Several Jerseys have come up missing… please help us keep a watch on EBay to see if they show up.
Yes, despite some injuries, the Magic coaching staff has utilized different players and strategies to formulate a competitive team destined to become a feared contender. With several exciting games in January, February showed a great transformation for the MAGIC. Congrats to Ed Malatesta on his
Home Run! (without oxygen or the aid of paramedics). Many more games to come. Hope to see you at the field, and thanks for all your support!

TARA WOODS “MAGIC” SOFTBALL UPDATE
5/17
Did you know that it took over a thousand attempts before Thomas Edison succeeded in inventing the incandescent light bulb? That being said, it doesn’t sound so bad that it only took us ten attempts to succeed in winning our first game (this season) on Wednesday, February 8th against an outstanding Del Tura team. We crushed them – 7 to 6! Well, maybe the score wasn’t really that one-sided; however, the team played with a renewed aura of confidence and enthusiasm, with many outstanding performances. It was a very impressive effort that we feel will lead to future successes. This win ignited an energy and excitement that’s contagious as indicated
by Janelle Wissler’s (our star midfielder) see above. As of this writing we have four more games and then the divisional play (starting Wednesday, March 1st) where the more comparable teams will play one another. We hope that the community will continue its fantastic support for the team. We have the best and most loyal following in the league and the team greatly appreciates it. I’m sure that those who attend the games have seen the banner we proudly display. This banner was presented to us from someone in the community who wishes to remain anonymous. Whoever you are, we are deeply grateful. Also,

the music provided by George and Janet Daly has added to our enjoyment of the games. The other teams enjoy it too. You would think you were at Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park! – Just another example of the kind of fans we have. Again, we want to thank those who attended and those who worked so hard to make our Spaghetti Dinner a great success. We all hope you enjoyed it. That’s it for now. Here’s hoping that we have more successes to report on next time. Jon Gold Manager, Tara Woods “Magic” Softball Team

TENNIS NEWS liaison representing the Association when dealing with Darlene on these types of issues. Dakota had two meetings with people at Pine Lakes concerning tennis opportunities. As a result, there will be an event with the theme “The Lakes and Woods Triathlon” on Sunday, March 5th, at 1:30 PM. The event will include the possibility of playing at different locations: Tara Woods, Pine Lakes, or Lake Fairways. It will be a mixed doubles event with three levels of players. Everyone will play two rounds. This will be a fun but challenging event with three categories of prizes. Afterwards there will be a potluck dinner at Pine Lakes. For more information, the event details are going to be posted two weeks in advance. An Association “fundraiser event” sparked some creative ideas from those present, and some possible dates were mentioned. To expedite the research needed, Arlene Franchini will chair the 2017 Tennis Association “Fundraiser and Other Events” Committee along with help from Gwen Engel, Janelle Wissler, and Frank Neveu. The committee will present their ideas, dates, etc.
at the February 26th Tennis Association meeting. Fred Puhlfuerst and Dick Heffron, the Nominating Committee for new officers, had nothing to report at this time. However, the people that they spoke to were not interested in applying for any of the open positions. Fred is hoping that the active participants of the Tennis Association would reconsider applying. We have a donated Christmas tree and everyone agreed that we would decorate it at Christmastime next season for display in the Clubhouse. Our next Tennis Association Meeting is Sunday, March 26th at 5:00 PM. See you on the courts. – Arlene Franchini ROUND ROBIN Very windy conditions prevailed as 21 tennis players tried their best to keep the ball in play at our January 22nd Round Robin. Although conditions were not ideal for tennis, everyone seemed to be having a good time on the courts. After all, that is one of the reasons for our Round Robins – to have a good time playing tennis, unlike when you’re in a

TENNIS ASSOCIATION MEETING Our second Tennis Association Meeting of the season was held on Sunday, January 22nd. Even though the attendance was lower than at previous meetings due to all of you members who are diehard football fans, we had a very productive meeting. In addition, let us not forget that most of you football fans also missed the best ever Cuban sandwiches, salad, and lemon meringue pie, thanks to our skillful chefs, George and Janet Daly. Below are some highlights of the meeting: Frank Neveu reported that he is going to set up a meeting with Darlene Bradley, the Tara Woods Community Manager, to discuss numerous maintenance items and issues concerning the needs of the Tennis Association. Some of these items include the damaged windscreens, court lights, fencing for support posts, bleacher back supports, and more. It was also decided by Dakota Windancer and other members present that Frank would be the only

competitive team tennis match and you are trying to win every game and every point. George and Janet Daly hosted the dinner which was enjoyed by 25 people. The dinner included Cuban sandwiches, corn and black bean pasta salad, and lemon meringue pie. For our February 26th dinner, Val and Paul Roderick planned on serving a Chicken Pierogi, cole slaw, and a Russian dessert. The courtside refreshments were to be provided by Fred Puhlfuerst and Janice Johnston. We will report more on that Round Robin in the next issue of the Columns. The season is going by very quickly, as I am already typing information about our last Round Robin of the season, which is Sunday, March 26th. We hope you sign up to come out and play tennis and also to attend the dinner, which will be hosted by Carole Neveu and Connie Lessard. Liz Wilson is in charge of the courtside refreshments. – Linda Engel APPRECIATION DAY By the time you read this, Appreciation Day will be over. tennis game, and George & Janice Johnston again chaired the “Hit the Chairs” game. – Linda Engel TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE Our first competitive match of the New Year was against the Six Lakes Seagulls where we won 4 of the 6 sets. The following week we won 5 sets and lost only 1 to the Six Lakes Pelicans. Sabal Springs then visited our courts on January 26th, and we came away with a victory, winning 4 sets and losing only 2. This included two tie breaks; with us winning one and losing the other. We won all 6 sets in our match against Herons Glen on February 2nd. That match marked the end of the first half of our tennis schedule. As of press time, we are in second place, just 4 sets behind Lake Fairways. – Linda Engel MEN’S LEAGUE Red League The Red Team has been playing with a number of injuries. Our team is down from nine players to five, but with the dedication of the five and subbing up from the White Team we are looking forward to improving our standing in the Red League. We were able to go to two
tie breaks with Herons Glen, which is the best team in our league. That is a good thing. We are improving ourselves at practice and are working hard to win more sets as the year progresses. – Fred Puhlfuerst White League The White Team results are not as good as we would like them to be. We are still in the middle of the pack of ten teams, middle of the season, trying to advance, but, there seems to be a big hill blocking our view. We will keep on plugging along and doing our best – still having fun!!! – Royce La Liberty Blue League We are now eight weeks into the season which is the halfway point. Our team is in sixth place but in a very tight grouping. Only seven points out of 3rd/4th place, so anything can happen between now and the end of the season. Everyone is playing well and I feel confident we can move up to third or fourth place by season end. Practice, practice, practice – it can be done. – Bill Powers Submitted by Linda Engel

Time to Gather Your Investment Tax Forms The holidays are now a month behind us, which means it’s about time for another season: Tax Season. While you may not find it particularly festive, you can get through this season with a minimum of stress – if you’re organized. That means, among other things, you’ll need to gather the correct forms in one place. And right about now, you should be receiving many of the forms you’ll need – specifically, those tax forms related to your investments. HERE ARE SOME OF THE KEY FORMS TO WATCH FOR: • 1099-B – This form reports capital gains. A capital gain is an increase in the value of an investment over the initial purchase price. Short-term capital gains, on investments you’ve held for one year or less, are taxed at your ordinary income tax rate, while long-term capital gains, on investments you’ve held for more than one year, are taxed at 0%, 15% or 20%, depending on income. (Keep in mind t that these figures are for the 2016 tax year.) • 1099-DIV – This form reports the dividends you received from companies in which you invested. For most dividends, the tax rate is the same as it is for capital gains – 0%, 15% and 20%. • 1099-INT – A 1099-INT reports the interest you received from bonds or cash instruments. Typically, most types of interest are taxed at your ordinary tax rate. • 1099-R – A 1099-R form reports withdrawals from retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k), along with payments you received from pensions and annuities. • 1099-MISC – This form reports, among other items, payments you might have received in lieu of dividends. 1099-MISC also reports earnings you might have received as an independent contractor. • 1099-Q – If you contributed to a 529 plan or a Coverdell Education Savings Account (ESA), you may receive Form 1099-Q in each year you make withdrawals to pay school expenses of the beneficiary. However, the earnings in a 529 plan or Coverdell ESA grow tax free, and withdrawals are not taxable, as long as the money is used to pay for qualified higher education expenses. Whether you do your taxes yourself or use a tax professional, you’ll want to become familiar with these forms. Not only are they necessary for filing your taxes, but they can also tell you something about how you invest. To cite one example, if you’re seeing a lot of taxes related to short-term capital gains – which are taxed at your personal tax rate, rather than the more favorable long-term rate – you may be doing too much trading. You might want to consider moving toward a strategy in which you buy quality investments and hold them for the long term. Here’s something else to look at: the taxes resulting from your traditional IRA and 401(k) withdrawals. Could you possibly withdraw less from these accounts so that your taxes will be lower? Once you’re 70½, you have to take at least a minimum amount, but other than that, you control the withdrawals – and you might benefit, taxwise, by taking out only what you truly need. So, gather up those 1099 forms for your tax returns – and for your own education as an investor.

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB
The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month is devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer. The second and fourth Thursdays are reserved for general subjects, and cover a single specific topic of interest. Last month we looked at Internet Video, including the many devices and services that you can use, and started a mini-course of the basics of Microsoft Office. This is the most popular productivity software of all time and in all places and uses. In Basics, we finished our overview of Programs, Files, and Folders, and started looking at the Windows Paint drawing and drafting application. This month we will cover Microsoft Word, the word processor in Office that has become the standard in business, and WordPad, the word processor that is included free with all versions of Windows. Everyone has WordPad on their computer, though most people don’t know it. We will then continue with Office, and move on to the Internet and E-mail in Basics. We will wrap up the Basics by the end of the season, and hope to cover Excel spreadsheets (the other major component of Office) and Google Apps (an online version of Office). It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St.Laurent, The Computer Tutor
GOING PLACES
Definition of "OLD" I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over. It’s scary when you start making the same noises as your coffee maker.

ENTERTAINING NEWS So Ladies and Gentlemen…..wherever did February go? With the arrival of March comes the completion of the entire Entertainers’ hard work for this season. By now most of you have purchased your tickets to our production of “DRINKING HABITS”, and if not I trust you will be purchasing them soon or at the door. This play involves Nuns, Priests and Cardinals; I am pretty sure it does not fulfill your Sunday obligation. But then what do I know? Give it a try. Listen! Can you hear that sound? What do you hear? Why, I believe it is the harmonious vocals of the New Image Chorus practicing for their performance in March. There is laughter, joy, and pride exuding from the rafters of the Tara Woods Clubhouse. Such energy and commitment and enjoyment from so many voices! What a fine way to participate in life – to sing to the heavens! The New Image Chorus this year is quite patriotic. We all need to feel proud of our Red, White and Blue. What is your favorite Americana tune? Don’t you feel happy, strong and proud with every Hallelujah? Does your back become a little straighter, your

I want to remind everyone that the donations to the Trash and Treasure make it possible for the Fashion Show to be a Free Event, and for the Garden Club’s donations to CROW and ECHO. So, please bring clean and useable items that you wish to donate to the Clubhouse on Friday, March 3rd. To all our wonderful volunteers, please put this date on your calendar. That day, we will need to move tables and set up for the sale at 9:00 AM; also the next day, Saturday, March 4th, after 1:00 PM, we will again need to put the tables back in place. Our last meeting for this year is Saturday, March 11th. Since this article is due by the 10th, I cannot report on where or when we will meet for our Luncheon. This will be decided at this meeting. If you missed the meeting, a poster with a sign-up sheet will be placed on the Clubhouse Bulletin Board. Remember the Luncheon is for Garden Club
members only. The Garden Club is still looking for one or two people with the time and energy to help keep up the Butterfly Garden. New ideas are always welcome. Rachelle DellaRocca My new contact number: 322-6386. What to plant Annuals: Plant heat tolerant annuals for color such as crossandra, gazania, melampodium, and zinnia, that will last. Bulbs: Plant gladiola corms 6” apart and 4” deep and stake as they grow. Plant caladiums for a showy tropical display all summer. Herbs: In addition to their culinary value, many herbs are ornamental and attract butterflies to the garden. Vegetables: Warm season crops, such as sweet corn, cucumber, watermelon, and pepper, should be planted now for late spring harvest. What to do Trees and shrubs: Prune when new growth begins after the end of
the dormant season. To guard next season’s blooms, begin pruning after the last flowers fade but before new buds Mulch: Renew or add mulch in landscape beds to reduce weeds and retain moisture. Fertilize lawns: If not done in February, fertilize lawns this month. Pests: Monitor landscape plants for insects, especially for the presence of aphids on tender new growth. Insects become more active during warm weather. Fertilize: palms and ornamental shrubs if not done last month. Choose a fertilizer based on each plant’s needs. Examine lawns for problems: Identify damaging insects and spot treat early to prevent widespread damage. Rule out cultural problems, such as irrigation failure, before treatment. Tropical and subtropical fruits: Add variety and interest to the landscape and table with exotic fruits. Excerpts from the University of Florida Gardening Calendar available on line.

HOW TO STAY YOUNG
1. Try everything twice. On one woman’s tombstone she said she wanted this epitaph: “Tried everything twice. Loved it both times!” 2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down. (Keep this in mind if you are one of those grouches!) 3. Keep learning: Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever... Never let the brain get idle. ‘An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.’ And the devil’s name is Alzheimer’s! 4. Enjoy the simple things. 5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath. And if you have a friend who makes you laugh, spend lots and lots of time with HIM/HER. 6. The tears happen: Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. LIVE while you are alive. 7. Surround yourself with what you love: whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge. 8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help. 9. Don’t take guilt trips.. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county, to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is. 10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity. I love you, my special friend! 11. Forgive now those who made you cry. You might not get a second chance. Remember! Lost time can never be found. Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. Wine does not make you FAT .... it makes you LEAN .... (against tables, chairs, floors and walls)
