FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou The last Homeowners Association meeting for “the season” was April 9th. Thank you for your participation. The Board will continue to meet in May and as needed throughout the summer. The next scheduled Homeowners Association Meeting is October 8, 2018. Don’t laugh, it will be here before you know it. The Board is actively working together with Lee County Emergency Management and our Tara Woods Special Needs Committee to insure the safety of residents during a tropical storm or hurricane. In general, special needs are those residents with medical needs that require electricity, such as oxygen dependents, dialysis, ventilators, nebulizers, etc. There are also many
other medical issues that could qualify you for this worthwhile program. We all know that now is the time to prepare with a plan. You will be hearing more from our Special Needs Committee concerning the specifics. HEADS UP – If you haven’t yet shared your feelings on a possible location of a new Fitness Center using the Meeting Room and the Verandah, sample letters and addresses are available on the back bulletin board of the Clubhouse. Take the time to do this. DID YOU KNOW THAT – if you temporarily need a wheelchair, walker, cane, potty chair, ramp or other items like that – we can help! We maintain an inventory of medical equipment. These
items are kept clean and in good working order. How does it work? When you see that you have a need for one of these items, call: Chuck Poveromo at 815-979-3467, Frank Millette at 543-2954 or Lorraine Milligan at 731-0346. These volunteers will make arrangements to get the item(s) to you and a pickup when it no longer needed. NO CHARGE! If you have an item in good working condition that you no longer need, consider donating it to the program. It is an excellent way of giving back and helping people in our community. Thank you. Although you might not need this information now, keep this note as a reminder. Lou Dunning, Vice President
ANNUAL KARA CIRCLE BLOCK PARTY The Kara Circle, Tara Lakes Circle and Darwin Street Block Party was held on March 15th at the Clubhouse. About 30 neighbors gathered together to share lunch and to get to know one another a little better. The classic beanbag baseball challenge of the women versus the
men was very entertaining. The men staged a comeback and won, but fun was had by all with laughter and high fives. Thanks to hostess Barb Gilfillan and all those who helped providing the games and food.

MANAGER’S CORNER together beautifully. We are adding a form in The Columns mid-section to update the guest list at the Guard House. You can only have five permanent guests per household on the list. Please return to the Office, so we can give the Gate Attendants corrected information. We had a great turnout for the Dialogue with Darlene. I hope that we have answered some questions. This was a trial run; the TWHA and I will use this to make the
next meeting an informative forum. Please remember that you do not have to wait for a meeting to ask a question. The forms are in the Clubhouse. Please fill out the form and make sure to add your contact information. I generally get back to you within 48 hours (from the time I get the form in hand). These forms are confidential; I will not give out names and I do not share the information; Our winter residents are packing up to leave us for the summer,
headed back North. We have had many luncheons, parties, dinners, ice cream socials and going-away parties through April. Please have a safe trip; looking forward to your return in the fall. For us, summer starts our improvements for the community, so our year-round residents will be seeing lots of activities going on. Please remember: if you are going away for the summer, make sure you have someone who will be taking care of your home, trimming, watering plants, shutters, and keeping an
eye on everything. You can give the Office the name and phone number of that person so we know who to call in the event of an emergency. Don’t forget to forward your mail with the postal service. If the box gets full, they will stop delivering mail. Have a safe and blessed summer. See you soon. Darlene Bradley “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” Mae West

ENTERTAINING NEWS So Ladies and Gentlemen…April showers bring May flowers as the saying goes. Here in Florida we are lucky enough to have flowers most of the year. Now that the “busy season” is over we get to enjoy what is around us. The beach is still as beautiful as ever and the traffic is much lighter; even the restaurants are less crowded. If I could suggest, get out now before the hot and humid weather arrives and enjoy what SW Florida has to offer. Oh yeah, if you see any of the Entertainers who were part of the show “Adam’s Eve” you may still tell them how much you appreciate their hard work and dedication. Also, I know you are looking forward to next season. I know I am. You’ll never really be great unless you aim high. Stella Adler Pat Dunning Entertainers
How do spell success? S U C C E S S or the 2018 Spring Concert of the New Image Chorus! My, my, what a fun time was had by all those who attended the March 24th Saturday night affair. The audience was participating full force with their voices, waving the Program, clapping their hands and even some good old-fashioned foot stomping! The name of the show was “Our Favorite Tunes Spanning the Decades” under the fine direction of Carol McGowen. The entire ensemble was electrifying as were the stand out performance of Lois Heideman and Denise Padgett in Hernando’s Hideaway, Polly Brown’s Crazy, Dotty St. James and Ron Andrews’ I Remember It Well, Barry Maberry’s Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, Dorothy Benedict, Erika Futrell, Dotty St. James, Marie Vidrine and Ron Andrews’ My Heart Belongs To Daddy. Polly’s rendition of House of the Rising Sun, Lou Cashin’s K-K-K-Katy, Get A Job sung by Lou Cashin, Lois Heideman, Denise Padgett, Ann West, Ron Andrews, Rod Browder, Bill Hubbs and Jack Morley and Polly Brown Leading You Can’t Be A Beacon. A big salute goes out to Stu Berman who narrated the program. A special thanks to the Sound & Lighting Crew that helps make us look and sound so darn good! All in all, it was a spectacular evening! Looking forward to next year; come on down and join the very best, friendliest, fun seeking group at Tara Woods! Have a safe and sound summer at home, wherever that may be! Sheila Piganelli

What Should Investors Know About Recent Volatility? As you may have heard, the stock market has been on a wild ride lately. What’s behind this volatility? And, as an investor, how concerned should you be? Let’s look at the first question first. What caused the steep drop in stock prices we experienced on a few separate days? Essentially, two main factors seem to be responsible. First, some good economic news may actually have played a significant role. A 17-year low in unemployment and solid job growth have begun to push wages upward. These developments have led to fears of rising inflation, which, in turn, led to speculation that the Federal Reserve will tighten the money supply at a faster-than-expected rate. Stocks reacted negatively to these expectations of higher interest rates. The second cause of the market volatility appears to be simply a reaction to the long bull market. While rising stock prices lead many people to continue buying more and more shares, some people actually need to sell their stocks – and this pent-up selling demand, combined with short-term profit-taking, helped contribute to the large sell-offs of recent days. Now, as for the question of how concerned you should be about this volatility, consider these points: Sell-offs are nothing unusual. We’ve often experienced big sell-offs, but they’ve generally been followed with strong recoveries. Of course, past performance is not a guarantee of future results, but history has shown that patient, persistent investors have often been rewarded. Fundamentals are strong. While short-term market movements can be caused by a variety of factors, economic conditions and corporate earnings typically drive performance in the long term. Right now, the U.S. economy is near full employment, consumer and business sentiment has risen strongly, manufacturing and service activity is at multi-year highs, and GDP growth in 2018 appears to be on track for the best performance since 2015. Furthermore, corporate earnings are expected to rise this year. So, given this background, what’s your next move? Here are some suggestions: Review your situation. You may want to work with a financial professional to evaluate your portfolio to determine if it is helping you make the progress you need to eventually achieve your long-term goals. Reassess your risk tolerance. If you were unusually upset over the loss in value of your investments during the market pullback, you may need to review your risk tolerance to determine if it’s still appropriate for your investment mix. If you feel you are taking on too much risk, you may need to rebalance your portfolio. Keep in mind, though, that by “playing it safe” and investing heavily in vehicles that offer greater protection of principal, but little in the way of return, you run the risk of not attaining the growth you need to reach your objectives. Look for opportunities. A market pullback such as the one we’ve experienced, which occurs during a period of economic expansion and rising corporate profits, can give long-term investors a chance to add new shares at attractive prices in an environment that may be conducive to a market rally. A sharp market pullback, such as we’ve seen recently, will always be big news. But if you look beyond the headlines, you can sometimes see a different picture – and one that may be brighter than you had realized.one that may be brighter than you had realized.

THE GARDEN CLUB The Garden Club wishes all the “Snowbirds” a safe trip home and wishes everyone a safe and healthy summer! We have no meetings during the summer. Our first meeting of the new season is Saturday, October 13th. Please mark your calendars, as this will be our only meeting before the: Fashion Show on Friday, November 2nd, and the Craft Fair on Saturday, November 3rd. We again wish to thank Linda and John Hoos for doing such a great job on the Butterfly Garden. Coming from the North, I had no idea how to care for my palm trees. In doing research I found this to be very interesting and thought I would share with everyone. This
was something I definitely was doing wrong. OVER-PRUNING. I kept seeing articles online that tell people to cut brown parts off of the leaves because it will save the palm tree from wasting nutrients on the dying leaf. Makes sense, right? Wrong. Palm trees need dying leaves for nutrients, and when you cut them off, your palm tree doesn’t like it. Palms move nutrients from the older fronds to the new growth. Palm fronds should be cut when they are as close as possible to the trunk. Do NOT remove any fronds that grow at a 45 degree angle or greater. If your palm tree looks like a rooster tail, you over-pruned it. (from the Florida Palm tree website)
I have been following this and my trees now look great. Rachelle Dellarocca 239-322-6386 What to Plant Annuals/Bedding plants: Plants that can take summer heat include coleus, salvia, torenia, wax begonia, and ornamental pepper. Bulbs: Some lilies do better when their roots are crowded. Try planting Amazon, Aztec, and Clivia lilies in containers to increase blooming. Herbs: Plant heat-loving herbs, including basil, Mexican tarragon, ginger, cumin, summer savory, and rosemary. Vegetables: Sweet potatoes, boniato, hot peppers, and tropical “spinach” such as Sisso, Malabar,
and New Zealand can be planted now. What to Do Pests: Watch for thrips, scale, and mites on ornamental plants because they become more active in warm weather. Gardenias and ixora: Distinguish between the normal yellowing of older leaves and the yellowing of new growth, which usually indicates a micronutrient deficiency. Oleanders: Inspect chewed or ragged leaves for oleander caterpillars Lawns: Watch for damage from chinch bugs in St. Augustinegrass and begin scouting for newly hatched mole crickets in bahiagrass lawns.
Tomatoes: Watch for pests, disease, and nutritional disorders on tomato plants. Trees: Prepare for hurricane season by checking trees for damaged or weak branches and prune if needed. Hire an ISA-certified arborist. Lawns: Prevent or minimize disease by following proper cultural practices when caring for lawns. Excerpts from the University of Florida Gardening calendar.

MID-ATLANTIC CLUB We experienced a sun-filled day on Tuesday, April 10th, for the Tropic Star Cruise to Cabbage Key. A picnic for our meeting on Sunday, May 20th, will wrap up our gatherings until the “Fall”. Watch for details listed through Club emails and on the Clubhouse

NEW ENGLAND CLUB
10/18
The New England Club held our “sports theme” party on Friday, March 30th. NY Yankees, Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots were the predomi-
nant fan gear of the evening. The Club enjoyed the culinary talents of Ron & Sue Proulx, Mike Renzulli, and Al Dion. A huge THANK YOU again to them! After playing frisbee, football and golf, the Club had a rousing game of Bean Bag Baseball--Men vs. Women. Unfortunately, the men got lucky--and won despite a valiant attempt by the
“girls”. After baseball, hot fudge sundaes were served for a perfect ending. Enjoy your summer. Stay safe and healthy until we meet again. Judy Machnicz

TARA WOODS MASONIC CLUB The Masonic Club meets monthly, going out for breakfast at The Pub in Pine Lakes. On March 16th, we met at Herons Glen for our annual luncheon, when we invite our spouses and honored guests whose husbands had been in the club. We had a delicious lunch and a good time. Have included some photos from the day. Our monthly meetings are an opportunity for fellowship and sharing stories of interest about the Masonic Order and other subjects. If you are a Mason and interested in becoming a member (no dues), please contact Bob Cooney, Ken Ferris or Bill Hampton. Our last breakfast together for the season was April 10th, but we normally meet the first Tuesday of the month. See you next season. Submitted by Beth Ferris for Bob Cooney, leader of the club.
BAILEY SPEAKS Hi, this is Bailey. As you read in previous issues, I’ve been under the weather from fire ant bites. Well, on my last visit for treatment, we received blood tests results from a prior visit. Unfortunately, it was a bittersweet outcome. They discover I have cancer in my lymph nodes. Even though my vet doesn’t believe that myself and my master need to say our goodbyes yet, I’m taking one day at a time receiving chemo. So far I am eating, drinking and staying comfortable. Just like humans receiving chemo, I’m losing my hair from the treatments. Once being a beautiful white West Highland Terrier to now turning into a Mexican Hairless. He!! He!!! Well, I want everyone to know I’ll be continuing putting my paws up and scratching behind my ears on writing my articles, “Bailey Speaks”, in The Columns. But when the time comes to say goodbye, I’ll pass the bone to my other fellow four-footed friend Shilo, my Australian Silky Terrier little sister. Well, on a happier note, this seg-
ment of “Bailey Speaks” we are now getting our bearings together. Since our snowbirds are heading back, we wish them, “God Speed and have a safe drive back.” So, this month on “Bailey Speaks” gives my fellow Tarawooders some essential Spring Cleaning Tips: •Remove water stains with lemon for a natural faucet fix •Clean your microwave by heating lemon juice and rinds in water •Use white vinegar to break shower head buildup •Clean stainless steel sinks with baking soda •Use newspaper to clean dirty windows and mirrors •Organize your fridge and cabinets with rotating turntables •Use a wet dryer sheet on your ceramic stovetop to remove burnton residue •Clean your oven or BBQ grill with an onion •Use a coffee filter to clean your computer or TV screen •In your clothes dresser, unpack and stack your Spring and Summer
clothes vertically •Use cream of tartar to clean toasters and teakettles •Use a window squeegee to scrape pet hair from carpet or rug •Clean your computer keyboard with cotton swabs •Use a butter knife to clean air vents
I know it’s a lot of work for simple spring cleaning, and a lot of the tips are common sense. I’m no Hazel the Maid, but hopefully these helpful hints will help you all. By the way, did you know a simple pencil eraser can do the following: remove sticker gunk, secure your earring, spruce up suede and
polish silver. In the meantime, Happy Tails, till next month – hope to see you then. P.S. Happy Memorial Day. Also, a big “Thank you” for your service to our current troops and all who have served. Bailey

LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. The stakes are very low. Call Polly Brown, 731-1614, if you’d like to join us – she’ll fill you in on the details or answer any questions you may have.

LEE COUNTY / TARA WOODS SPECIAL NEEDS TEAM As you all may know, a revised Lee County/Tara Woods Special Needs Program it was developed to assist our residents in Tara Woods who would need assistance in the event of an emergency. We are working and interacting very closely with the Lee County Special Needs Program and Director Deb Quimby to ensure that we at Tara Woods receive the best and most up-to-date information and assistance for our residents with special needs in case of a disaster. The Team consisting of Lynn Makia, Sue Cook, Kathy O’Hearn, Donna Phillips and Sylvia Stump have been working diligently over the past 6+ months to make sure we have the most updated information for you. The Tara Woods Homeowners Association Board is dedicated to ensure the safety of our residents and that is paramount for those who may need assistance during a disaster. Effective immediately the Tara Woods Clubhouse is no longer an option for our Special Needs residents. Our Club-
house and the Hurricane/Disaster Team is not equipped to assist you in case of a disaster. For example, if we should lose power in the Clubhouse and you are on oxygen or you should have a major medical issue, we cannot and do not have the supplies, equipment or personnel to assist you and we most likely cannot guarantee that Lee County EMS or EMT’s will be able to respond. The Lee County/Tara Woods Special Needs Team is dedicated to assist and provide you with the information about the Lee County Special Needs Registration Program and Lee County Shelters so you will be safe and get the best shelter for your needs. The Lee County definition of anyone with Special Needs includes: Use of or dependent upon: • Wheelchair, Scooter • Service Animal • Dialysis patient • Alzheimer’s patient • Amputee
• Oxygen dependent • Insulin Diabetic, Nebulizer • CPAP/BI-PapFeeding tube • Paraplegic, Bed-bound • Requires assistance with medications Due to this change…please contact a member of our Lee County/ Tara Woods Special Needs Team Nurses or members to assist you with questions and a booklet to guide you through the Lee County Special Needs registration process. Or you can go directly to the Lee County website: www.leegov.com/ specialneeds and click on the link in the center of the page - Special Needs Application. Also, if you know someone who may need assistance, please encourage them to contact one of us or go directly to the website to register with Lee County. Thank you for your cooperation in this new program and we look forward to assisting you if you require our help.

The Tara Woods Tennis Association held their last meeting of the season on Sunday, March 25th. The highlight of the meeting was the election of new officers. Their terms will run from November 1st of 2018 through October 31st of 2020. Roger Rafferty accepted the office of President. Janice Johnston will be the Secretary, and Eddie Malatesta will become the Director at Large. The group will be seeking a new Vice President to finish out the term for the 20182019 season. Applauded for all his hard work for the past two years was Dakota Windancer as President. Also acknowledged was Frank Neveu for all the things he has done to keep the tennis courts up and running for the past five years as Vice President. – Debbie Polenska, Secretary ROUND ROBIN We had 21 tennis players signed up to play in our last Round Robin of the season which was held on March 25th. We had 13 men and 8 women signed up to play tennis that day, and it looked like
everyone had a good time on the courts. Julie Howley & Dick Heffron provided the courtside refreshments, which are always enjoyed by the many tennis players between their matches. Later on, after the Tennis Association Meeting, pizza was served by Carole and Frank Neveu. The meal also consisted of a salad and various desserts. The requested dates for next season’s Round Robins have been confirmed. Make note of these dates for next season: November 25th, none in December, January 27th, February 24th, and March 31st. – Linda Engel TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE Next season there will be just one Women’s team from Tara Woods rather than two teams like there was this past season. After both teams finished their season, a team meeting was held on March 20th to discuss the pos-
sibility of having two teams again next season or if there should be just one team. There were good reasons discussed for both possibilities. It was a very close vote as to whether there should be one or two teams but the majority of the women voted for having one team. All those who signed up for the team are now players on that team which will be captained by Janice Johnston. Her Co-Captain will be Mary Sandre. – Linda Engel MEN’S LEAGUE White League – Stallions The season ended with the Stallions of the White League in 4th place out of 10 team – a fair finish, but there were always matches that were close and we would have liked to have won several more. We had an interesting year with several injuries along the way causing us to bring in some substitutes to fill in to give us a full team to play with. Well, at our ages, we

www.twha.us • 941.349.0194 • May 2018 • Island Visitor Publishing, LLC have to be ready for problems and deal with each situation. Next year there will only be one White Team, the Stallions. We have a roster of ten men as of now. We hope it will stay that way. We have a new Captain, Pete Pracher, and Co-Captain, Art Frederick. Keep watching next year for exciting games. We always need your support. – Fred Puhlfuerst White League – Mustangs I did not expect to be coming back as a Captain for the 20182019 season, as I am planning to play County Tennis, but with encouragement and support from my teammates I will again be Captain, with Mike Renzulli serving as Co-Captain, of the newly created Blue League Mustangs.
We will return most of our current team with a few additions for 2018-2019. As of this report, all positions have not been finalized but we are hoping all will come back healthy and ready for a fun and challenging season this fall. As always see you on the courts! – Ed Malatesta Blue League – Tigers Well, the season is finally over and our year-end annual banquet was successful as always but a bit drawn out – “more about that later”. Our team came out in 5th place out of 8 teams – not bad, all things considered: four players 80+. Some changes coming next year: Phil Franchini will be moving away, but not too far, but, in
any case, we will all miss him a lot. There will be two Blue Teams next year; that should be fun. The new captain and co-captain for the Tigers next year will be Al Dion and Mike O’Hearn. Our line-up for the upcoming year looks stronger than this past season. We all look forward to the summer break and the 2018-2019 tennis season. Wishing everyone a great summer. P.S. Dale, our Banquet Manager, has promised a new venue for next year’s banquet where the ratio of servers/bartenders to diners is something less than 24:1. – Bill Powers Submitted by Linda Engel
GANG OF BIKERS SEEN AROUND TARA WOODS!
8-9/18
There was a biker gang that hit our community on a quiet Tuesday afternoon in April. They were captured by photos before they caused any harm. Could this be the beginning of a new club? If you see them again, make sure to wave at them as they go by your house. Have a great summer! Biker Babes – Lynn, Marie, Donna and Pat
