FREEDOM!
How fortunate we are to live in a country which gives us such a special gift.......Freedom! “Freedom from Want” pictured here by Norman Rockwell - this cannot be said any better than here at Tara Woods. We have the good luck to live in this community and in South West Florida. There are so many activities, events, dances, clubs, sports, cards and just getting together with family, friends and neighbors. Our weather allows us to do many things all year ’round, i.e.; golf, tennis, beach, softball, community events, etc. What more could you want! Therefore, when you get together with your family and friends this Thanksgiving Day, also remember those who aren’t as fortunate, those who cannot be with their family and friends, the men and women in the military and service organizations (police, firemen,EMTs, etc.), and for the country we live in. Say a special prayer for them and for the life we have - may it forever be bright and beautiful and forever remain free. ~Barbara Roland Norman Rockwell’s picture “Freedom from Want”

From the President and Director need to be filled. Please see Celeste’s article regarding the procedures for submitting your name as a candidate. I would like to express how important it is that we have people step up to run for the Board. Our Homeowner’s Association Board consists of eight members. There are five officers: President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Treasurer and Membership Secretary, and three Board members at large. All are considered Board members. We meet monthly as a Board, followed by a meeting of the Association, October thru May. Board meetings in the summer are called on an “as needed” basis. This group represents the residents of Tara Woods and acts as liaison with management, as well as overseeing a number of Committees and groups that provide services for the residents. The officers have specific duties related to their office, as well as other duties that are assigned by the President. The duties of the three Board members at large are assigned by the President. The By-laws of the Association are on the TWHA website, www.twha.us, if you would like to review them and learn more about the Association.
SUNSHINE AND SYMPATHY Condolences to the families and friends of Jim Sturgis, Don Tarrance and former resident Dot Busfield who passed away this past month. We hope the following people and others in our community who are struggling with health issues will soon be on their way to a complete and full recovery: Cookie Wilcyek, Barbara Miller, Sue Nagle, Aaron Safirstein and Joe Bibeau. Stay well! Nancy Wuebbeler, 288-5778
Having served on the Board for a number of years, I have seen how important it is to have a group of dedicated people, working for the good of the community. I have been fortunate to work side by side with these people and through positive communication we have been through a number of difficult situations. Currently, we have developed a good rapport with our community manager and office staff. I believe it is crucial to maintain a working relationship with management. Having achieved this, we hope to continue along this path as we welcome new members to the Board in January. If you would like to know more about serving on the Board, feel free to give me a call. Any of the current Board members would be glad to talk to you regarding their positions and their general thoughts about serving on the Board. Being a member of the Board requires integrity, commitment, tolerance, cooperation and humor, among other talents. If you possess these qualities, We Want You! Think about it.

What happened to summer? There seemed to be little transition into fall this year. The rain just stopped. The humidity lowered. The air cleared and the white, puffy clouds of winter appeared. Being away most of September, maybe I missed it. It also seems that overnight we’ve been thrown into the “busy” season. The snowbirds are slowly returning, the state clubs are meeting again, the organized sports are starting, Entertainers and New Image Chorus are back on schedule with rehearsals, and thanks to new resident, Kim Buletta, the Halloween Party is being planned! Thank you, Kim and to those who volunteered to be on her committee. The TWHA Board of Directors is meeting again and the Membership meetings started in October. As announced at the meeting by Membership Secretary, Celeste Perre, there are four positions open that need to be filled at the elections to be held at the January Annual Meeting. With a sigh of relief, I’m very glad that Celeste and Paul Montelaro have opted to run for their current positions of Membership Secretary and Treasurer for another two years. In addition, the positions of Recording Secretary

the scheduling of these lessons is tentative. The next topic that will be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Most of them stand on their own and do not require that you attend the earlier ones. Each lesson is scheduled to last about an hour, but tends to run overtime with general questions from the members. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. This is a great time to learn the Basics; we are starting again at the very beginning and assume that you know nothing about computers. The Advanced topics cover all sorts of subjects, programs, and hardware, including Windows 8, multi-media, tablets, and e-book readers. Bring your laptop computer with you if you want to follow along (this is optional). Bring something to take notes with. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, so
So Ladies and Gentlemen…..as we look forward to the reports of early snow from our Northern friends and family, we here in Tara Woods continue enjoying beautiful weather. These lovely days help us enjoy getting out experiencing what South West Florida has to offer. Speaking of what is offered in Florida, here in Tara Woods, The Entertainers have been in rehearsal for a short time and we
are progressing. It is not too early to mark your calendars; as a reminder our show this season will be “Said the Spider to the Spy” and will be on stage in the Clubhouse for two nights; Friday and Saturday, March 13 and 14, 2015. The doors open at 6:30 PM, show starts at 7:00 PM. Tickets will be on sale a month before the production; usually on sale at Saturday’s coffee, at Bingo and also at the door the nights of the shows. None of what we do would be possible without the support of our volunteers and community. In return, we all experience a vibrant camaraderie, vital civic pride and a shared love for the arts and our
community. Make sure you support the events that are happening in Tara Woods. Your ticket purchase and applause are the ways we know you appreciate our hard work. Please note: We request for these two shows you do not bring food nor drink into the clubhouse. Thank you for your cooperation. Also, the first row is set aside for those that feel the need to be closer to the stage, for whatever reason. Tell your friends and encourage them to join you in the audience. Our small cast of players will appreciate the larger audiences. Pat-one, Stage Manager

“It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to thy name O Most High: To declare Your faithful love in the morning and Your faithfulness every night.” A hearty welcome to all our snowbirds. We are glad to have you back safely in sunny Florida as we look forward to another season of exciting happenings. Our first Inspirations meeting will be on Monday, November 17th at 12:00 NOON in the Clubhouse Meeting Room. All Ladies are invited. A salad luncheon will be served following the meeting by the Inspirations’ planning committee. Please sign the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board if you plan to attend.
We are excited to welcome as our guest speaker and soloist, Mr. Norman Jones. He resides in Cape Coral, but was born in Yorkshire, England. He has performed many recitals on both sides of the Atlantic. He will be sharing with us about his coming to America, as well as some wonderful hymns and their stories. His wife, Betty, will pleasure us with her quaint English accent as she shares with us an interesting experience concerning her husband. Come and bring a friend. She will be glad you did. We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and remember to “Count your blessings. Name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done”.

Please be advised that I will begin collecting TWHA dues for 2015 every Saturday morning at coffee (except Thanksgiving weekend), and November, December and January homeowners meetings. As in the past, the drill will be the same. The dues are $15 per home. Checks made out to TWHA, cash accepted. The dues can also be deposited in the mail slot outside the Homeowners Office or in the box outside my lanai door. If you have paid your dues for 2014, and you are paying your dues now, you will be paying for 2015. If you have not paid for 2014, you will NOW pay for 2014 and those dues will expire on January 31, 2015. This will mostly affect new residents who were not here a year ago. In either case, you will be able to vote for officers and the budget on election night which is January 12, 2015. Sound confusing?? Contact me. I will explain. Since the dues are the major income for the Homeowners Association, I encourage you to become new members, or to renew your membership from last year. I also ask that you pay your dues by the end of December. It makes my life easier when election night arrives. My best wishes to all for a Happy Thanksgiving.

YOU WOULD NEVER HAVE GUESSED Captain Kangaroo passed away on January 23, 2004 at age 76, which is odd, because he always looked like he was 76 (DOB: June 27, 1927). His death reminded me of the following story. Some people have been a bit offended that the actor, Lee Marvin is buried in a grave alongside 3 and 4 star generals at Arlington National Cemetery. His marker gives his name, rank (PVT) and service (USMC). Nothing else. Here is a guy who was only a famous movie star who served his time, why the heck does he rate burial with these guys? Well, following is the amazing answer: I always liked Lee Marvin, but did not know the extent
of his Corps experiences. In a time when many Hollywood stars served their country in the armed forces often in rear echelon posts where they were carefully protected, only to be trotted out to perform for the cameras in war bond promotions, Lee Marvin was a genuine hero. He won the Navy Cross at Iwo Jima. There is only one higher Naval award: The Medal of Honor! If that is a surprising comment on the true character of the man, he credits his sergeant with an even greater show of bravery. Dialog from “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson”: His guest was Lee Marvin, Johnny said, Lee, I’ll bet a
lot of people are unaware that you were a Marine in the initial landing at Iwo Jima and that during the course of that action you earned the Navy Cross and were severely wounded. ‘Yeah, yeah I got shot square in the bottom and they gave me the cross for securing a hot spot about halfway up Suribachi. Bad thing about getting shot up on a mountain is guys getting shot hauling you down. But Johnny, at Iwo I served with the bravest man I ever knew. We both got the Cross the same day, but what he did for his Cross, made mine look cheap in comparison. That dumb guy actually stood up on Red beach and directed
his troops to move forward and get off the beach. Bullets flying by, with mortar rounds landing everywhere & he stood there as the main target of gunfire so that his men got to safety. He did this on more than one occasion because his men’s safety was more important than his own life. That Sergeant and I have been lifelong friends. When they brought me off Suribachi we passed the Sergeant and he lit a smoke and passed it to me. NEXT MONTH I WILL LET YOU KNOW WHO THE SERGEANT WAS. Submitted by: Ruth and Timmy Zimmer
VETERANS’ MEMORIAL PLAQUE The Veterans’ Memorial Plaque presentation which had been previously planned to be held on Veteran’s Day has been delayed. Everything is coming together, but there is still a lot to be done. Everyone is working very hard to finish, but as we all know, all good things take time. Look for a new date and time on the Bulletin Board for the presentation announcement.

HONOR and REMEMBRANCE Ninety-six years ago, (November 11, 1918), World War I ended with an armistice, or temporary halting of hostilities. The Treaty of Versailles made it official on June 28, 1919. Later that year, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th to be Armistice Day, a day to celebrate peace while honoring our soldiers’ bravery and heroism. Unfortunately, the hope that this would be “the war to end all wars” did not hold true, and we continue sending our sons and daughters off to foreign countries to fight for justice and freedom. To honor veterans of all wars, Armistice Day was later renamed Veterans Day. This day gives us the opportunity to reflect on our good fortune to live in the United States and to thank those who defend our rights. It is the soldier who has given us our cherished freedom
of speech, our right to vote, and all of the other freedoms we too often take for granted while around the world others still fight for basic human rights. We are all indebted to the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country – a sacrifice that extends beyond those who put on the uniform. We should not forget that every soldier is a son, daughter, husband, wife, father, mother, sister or brother. For the families left behind, the sacrifice can be just as great. “ASK A VETERAN OR AN ACTIVE DUTY SOLDIER WHY THEY SERVE, AND THEIR STRENGTH OF CHARACTER, SENSE OF DUTY AND LOVE OF COUNTRY SHINE THROUGH IN THEIR ANSWER.”
of something greater than themselves, or of their determination that others may possess the precious rights and freedom we cherish. Whatever their specific reason, a common theme runs through their answers – they do not fight for themselves, but so that others may enjoy a better life. When Veterans Day comes around this year, I hope that we recognize it is more than just a day for shopping and sales bargains, or perhaps another day off from work. Instead, reflect on the significance of what our veterans have sacrificed and how your life might be different without them. Then do something special to honor the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our country. Submitted by: Dolores Paeth

What Are the Key USES of Cash?
As an investor, you may find that the elements of your portfolio that seem to draw most of your attention are stocks and bonds. After all, these investment vehicles, and others derived from them, provide you with potential growth and income opportunities — which is why you invest in the first place. Yet, you also may find significant value in a more humble financial asset: cash. In fact, you might be surprised at the various ways in which the cash, and cash equivalents, in your portfolio can help you complete your financial picture. One way to understand the uses of cash is to look at the “USES” of cash. In other words, consider the acronym USES:
• Unexpected expenses and emergencies — You’ll need sufficient cash for situations such as a job loss, a home repair or an unplanned medical expense. During your working years, you should keep three to six months’ worth of living expenses in a cash account specifically designed to meet unexpected expenses. Once you’re retired, you may be able to get by on a smaller emergency fund — up to three months’ worth of living expenses, although you will need more for everyday spending.
•
Specific short-term savings goal — Are you anticipating a big expense —a wedding, a big vacation, a down payment on a new home, etc. — sometime within the next few years? If so, you’ll want to set aside sufficient cash, with the exact amount depending on your specific short-term goal.
•
Everyday spending — It goes without saying that you’ll need adequate cash for your everyday spending needs — groceries, utilities, entertainment, mortgage/debt payments, and so on. Of course, while you’re working, you will probably handle most of these costs with your paychecks, but you may still need to set aside one or two months’ worth of living expenses. Once you’re retired, though, it’s a somewhat different story. While your expenses may go down in some areas (such as costs associated with employment), they are likely to go up in others (such as health care). So your overall cost of living may not drop much, if at all. Consequently, it may be a good idea to set aside 12 months’ worth of living expenses, after incorporating other sources of income, such as Social Security and outside employment. In addition, you’ll have to decide on the most efficient way of drawing on your other sources of income, including Social Security and investment accounts such as an IRA, a 401(k), etc. It’s especially important to create a sustain- able withdrawal strategy for your investment portfolio because you don’t want to run the risk of outliving your money.
•
Source of investment — You’ll want to have some cash available in your portfolio — perhaps 2% to 3% of the portfolio’s value — to take advantage of investment opportunities as they arise. Also, having even a small percentage of your portfolio devoted to cash can modestly improve your overall diversification — and a diversified portfolio is your best defense against market volatility. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.)
So, there you have it: four key USES of cash. Taken together, they provide some good reasons to keep at least a modest “stream” of liquid assets in your portfolio. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.
