FROM THE BOARDROOM by Lou What better way to bring in 2018 than a homegrown New Year’s Eve Party at the Clubhouse. A big thank you to the Midwest Club for hosting the New Year’s Eve Party and to all the participants who had the opportunity to enjoy a good night while watching the ball drop. Another thank you goes out to the Sound & Lighting Committee who brought in the Orange Sunshine Band to entertain us all. This was a high-class act with five musicians who played multiple instruments while singing songs that all of us, somehow, knew the words to. The annual Tara Woods Homeowners Association meeting was held on Monday, January 8th. The membership elected four directors, each of whom will serve a two-year term. Returning to the Board are Lou Dunning, Frank Millette, Ann Millette, and with a new member Ginnie Pontarelli. The meeting was well attended and we thank all the homeowners who came out and participated. In addition to the elections of directors, the Association’s 2018 budget was reviewed and approved by the membership along with the suggested revisions to the Association by-laws. Outgoing President Janet Daly was recognized for her 10 ½ years of service on the Board; she served 6 of these as President. While she will be leaving as a Board Member, she will continue to be actively involved in our community as the Activities Coordinator. A big thank you from all goes to Janet and her supportive husband, George. After the Annual Meeting the directors met to select the officers for the upcoming year. Selected were Frank Millette as President, Lou Dunning as Vice President, Ann Millette as Membership Secretary, Marie Ivens as Recording Secretary, and Eileen Robinson as Treasurer. Nancy Wuebbeler, Ginnie Pontarelli will serve as Directors at Large. The passing of Board Member Joanie Byrnes left a big hole not only on our Board but in our entire community. Joanie was always active in everything that she did – for instance the Sunshine Lady and revitalizing the T-shirt sales. We could always count on Joanie to step forward and volunteer in any way necessary to better our lives here in Tara Woods. We will miss her dearly. As a result of that untimely vacancy the Board is charged with selecting a director to fulfill the remainder of her term. The Board has selected Lynn Makia to fill out Joanie Byrnes’ term. Lynn is very active in our community and we look forward to working with her on the Board. Have you ever been to a Magic’s game? The Magic is our softball team which represents Tara Woods. They play Monday and Wednesday in Punta Gorda. The schedule is posted on the back bulletin board. They are a dedicated group of residents who are worth seeing, so check the schedule and plan to attend a game or two or three. Tara Woods Magic is known for having a large fan base attending their games. Let’s keep that going in 2018. Have you ever bet on a horse? If so, or if not, you have the opportunity to bet on actual prerecorded races. Everyone has their own method of choosing the winning
horse, so be sure to come out and try your hand at your method. I am sure you will be a winner! The races will be held on Friday, February 9th, at 4:00 PM in the Clubhouse. Tickets are $2.00 at Coffee, Bingo or at the door. Join us! There is still time to get your tickets to the Valentine’s Day Party hosted by the New England Club to be held on Saturday, February 10th, in the Clubhouse. This is always a fun evening. Be sure to get your tickets at Saturday’s Coffee or before Bingo on Tuesday night. Are you ready to have some fun? Our annual Residents Appreciation Day is Saturday, February 24th. This event is sponsored by Hometown America in conjunction with Tara Woods’ volunteer residents. This is one action-packed day starting with free coffee and pastry at 8:00 AM, followed by a golf cart/bicycle poker run. From 11:30 to 1:00 PM is a free lunch at the Clubhouse where lunch tickets are required. Prior to Appreciation Day, lunch tickets can be obtained from Polly Brown. Noon to 2:30 PM we move on to numerous games entailing shuffleboard courts, tennis courts, basketball court, bocce ball, horseshoes, mini golf course and more. Playing or working at each of these will earn you game tickets. Free BINGO with cash prizes follows 3:30 to 4:30 PM. In the evening at 7:00 PM you return to the Clubhouse where the game tickets you acquired during the day are redeemed for an opportunity to win prizes. This day is wrapped up with a dance which lasts till who knows when or 10:00 PM, whichever comes first. It is a totally fun day. To those who have attended before we look forward to seeing you again, and the people who are new to Tara Woods, please join us for this completely free fun day. This whole day is open to residents and official renters, so again, please see Polly Brown to receive your lunch ticket and plan on spending the day with your neighbors on Saturday, February 24th. Lou Dunning, Vice President

MANAGER’S CORNER January has brought most of our northern guests back to Tara Woods. We are anxious to hear about their summer activities while away. Residents are in full swing with parties, tennis, bocce ball, softball, golf, bowling, etc. Please take time to see all the new items that have been repaired or replaced during the summer months, new signs, horseshoe canopies, gazebo refurbished, and our new models completed. You will also notice Irma visited Tara Woods. Even though
we had issues, she left us with minimal damage to most residents. We did have crews in here as early as Monday morning after Irma left by midnight the previous Sunday. During the next few months please be aware of our speed limit of 20 mph. Also, we have many walkers and bike riders; patience is the name of the game. While on the subject of safety, children are not allowed to drive golf carts until 16 years of age. We do ask our bike riders to wear bright colored clothing and always have lights on
your bike when riding at night. Please remember we have changed car stickers for entrance to the gate. If you were not here for the initial distribution, you will need to come by the Office for your new decal, after 2 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Schedule for RV’s, Golf Carts, Motorcycles will be at a later date. We wish all of our residents a happy, healthy, New Year. See you at the Residents Appreciation Day! Darene Bradley

RESIDENT APPRECIATION DAY The annual “Resident Appreciation Day” for 2018 will be on Saturday, February 24th. The fun-filled day is made possible by the generosity of Hometown America and all the caring volunteers within our community. It takes an army of volunteers who give much of their time and energy to make it all happen. Hometown continues a tradition started by others many years ago by financing the entire day. Everyone involved are to be commended for everything they do, though it often goes unappreciated. The festivities for the day will stay the same as last year because
most of the feedback was positive. What few glitches there were have been tweaked! (The sandwiches will be larger!) For those of you who have not yet experienced Appreciation Day, the festivities begin Saturday morning at 8:00 AM with free coffee and bakery in the Clubhouse. At 9:30 AM anyone wanting to participate in the golf cart/bicycle Poker Run will gather at the Craft Building to receive the “clues”. A cash prize is awarded for the best poker hand. Next, between 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM free lunch is served: a sandwich, chips, a soda or water and a cookie. Sandwich choices
will be ham & cheese, chicken salad, egg salad or tuna salad. Then the activities/games will be played between 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM. A variety of games involving most of the amenities at Tara Woods are played – although not in the usual way! A big part of the fun is collecting tickets every time you participate in an amenities game (or for each hour you work during the day) for chances to win prizes to be given later in the evening. At 3:30 PM there is free BINGO for everyone with many $10.00 prizes. The festivities conclude Saturday night at 7:00 PM with a dance and awards ceremony acknowledging
our Honoree, Frank Millette. Many prizes will be given out during the evening at random drawings from all the tickets given to everyone for participating and volunteering. Those prizes range from $5.00 bills to gift certificates from many establishments in our area and other donations. It is the Steering Committee Members who will solicit and collect the donations for those prizes. Hometown America also provides additional good quality door prizes for Saturday night attendees randomly drawn from door prize tickets given at the door. The Steering Committee is open to any comments and sug-
gestions, including nominations for Honoree(s), committee members and changes in the activities. However, any changes you want to make to the games should include your new replacement game plan. All comments and suggestions will be discussed and considered at the committee meetings. A list of members will be posted on the bulletin board. Whether this is your first Appreciation Day or your fifteenth, everyone can get involved to help make the day fun. How much fun you allow yourself to have is entirely up to you!! Polly Brown, Chairman

Although the holidays are behind us, those looking to relieve you of your identity or money don’t take a holiday. At the December FMO meeting, a representative from the Sheriff’s Department spoke about the various ways crooks will try to obtain your personal information. Some of the highlights follow: The telephone call from your grandson claiming to need money. Hang up. If you want to verify that a family member is OK, call that family member. Then there is the call that your
TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS credit is OK and they want to offer you a lower interest rate. The only thing they want to lower is your bank balance. NEVER GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION TO ANYONE ON THE PHONE UNLESS YOU INITIATED THE CALL. THEN KNOW WHO YOU CALLED. It’s February; don’t let your guard down. At this writing, literature that was distributed at the December FMO meeting about how to protect yourself is in the library. Please help yourself.
The February FMO meeting is Friday, February 9th at 1:00 PM in what was formerly Aqua Isles, LaBelle. It is now called Legacy Moss Landing. Check the back bulletin board for directions. If you are not a member of the FMO, please consider becoming a member. There is strength in numbers. Thank you.

As we move into a new year, we draw ever closer to March when we will be putting on the play “Adam’s Eve”; be sure to mark the calendar for either March 9th or 10th. About February 10th we will begin selling tickets for our show at Saturday Morning Coffee and before Tuesday Bingo. The tickets will be $7.00 per person. everyone of the do’s and don’ts of attending a live stage performance: •No food and/or drink is allowed into our performance •Any electronic devices should be turned off or silenced •There should be no talking while the show is going on; applause or laughter is encouraged •All candy wrappers, etc. must be removed before the opening act Attention all Entertainer members: the February meeting will be on the third Saturday which is
February 17th. The meeting starts right after coffee about 9:00 AM. If you are not a member of the Entertainers, but are interested or want to know more, please join us at our Saturday, February 17th meeting. See you there. Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart. Pat Dunning, Stage Manager Entertainers

JOKE OF THE MONTH Six retired Irishmen were playing poker in O’Leary’s apartment when Paddy Murphy loses $500 on a single hand, clutches his chest and drops dead at the table. Showing respect for their fallen brother, the other five continue playing standing up. Mike O’Connor looks around and asks, “Oh, me boys, someone’s got to tell Paddy’s wife... who will it be?” They draw straws, Paul Gallagher picks the short one. They tell him to be discreet, be gentle, don’t make a bad situation worse. ”Discreet? I’m the most discreet Irishman you’ll ever meet. Discretion is me middle name, Leave it to me.” Gallagher goes over to Murphy’s house and knocks on the door. Mrs. Murphy answers and asks what he wants. Gallagher declares, “ Your husband just lost $500 and is afraid to come home.” “Tell him to drop dead!”, says Murphy’s wife. “I’ll go tell him” says Gallagher.

How Can You Improve Your Financial Fitness This Year?
If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get healthier, you may already be taking the necessary steps, such as improving your diet and increasing your exercise. Of course, physical fitness is important to your well-being – but, at the same time, don’t forget about your financial fitness. Specifically, what can you do to ensure your investment situation is in good shape? Here are a few “healthy living” suggestions that may also apply to your investment portfolio: Build endurance – Just as exercise can help build your endurance for the demands of a long life, a vigorous investment strategy can help you work toward your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement. In practical terms, this means you will need to own some investments with the potential to provide long-term growth. These are the investments that, ideally, you can hold on to for decades and eventually reap the benefits of capital appreciation. Of course, growth-oriented investments, such as most types of stocks, will rise and fall in value over the short term, and there’s no guarantee of profits, or even preserving principal. But if you choose wisely, and you’ve got the patience and discipline to hold on to your investments through the market’s ups and downs, you may well be rewarded. Maintain an ideal “weight” – You can help yourself stay healthy by maintaining your ideal weight. This can be challenging – as you know from the recently finished holiday season, it’s easy to put on a few extra pounds. And, just as inadvertently, your portfolio can tack on some unneeded weight, too, in the form of redundant investments. Over time, you may have picked up too many similar investment vehicles, resulting in an overconcentration, or “flabbiness,” that can work against you, especially when a market downturn affects the asset class in which you’re overloaded. So, you might be better off liquidating some of your duplicate, or near-duplicate, investments, and using the proceeds to help broaden your investment mix. Get proper rest – Many studies have shown that we need adequate rest to stay alert and healthy. In your life, you’ve probably already found that if you over-tax your body, you pay a price in your overall well-being. If you look at your investment portfolio as a living entity – which, in a way, it is, as it certainly provides life to your goals and aspirations – then you can see that it, too, can be weakened by stress. And one of the main stress factors is excessive trading. If you’re constantly buying and selling investments in an attempt to boost your returns, you may rack up hefty fees, commissions and taxes – and still not really get the results you wanted. Plus, if you’re frequently moving in and out of different investments, you’ll find it hard to follow a unified, long-term strategy. So, confine your trading to those moves that are really essential – and give your portfolio a rest. To enjoy your life fully, you’ll want to take care of your physical and financial health – and, as it turns out, you can make similar types of moves to help yourself in both areas.

The time is coming up for getting those names and addresses to Beth Ferris for men and women you know who are in the service, so we can send them a box with cookies and other items. Please get the information to me by February 17th. This is an annual project of the Inspirations Group here in Tara Woods. We don’t meet monthly any longer but have continued with doing our service projects. We would appreciate contributions to help with the cost of mailing the boxes and for purchasing the items. Those can be given to Beth Ferris or Ann Scott. There will be a sign-up list for baking cookies on the bulletin board in February or call Beth or Ann. The boxes are very much appreciated and we thank you for your help and support. We will be packing up the boxes March 3rd. Beth Ferris

BAILEY SPEAKS Wow! Can you believe it? It’s February already and we’ve had a whirlwind of activities that took place last month in January at Tara Woods. Started by bringing in the 2018 New Year, Orientation, Cancer Run (unfortunately I was unable to participate, because I got seriously bitten by Fire Ants during my routine walk – “So Be Careful” out there), special stage shows, Block Party, Happy Hour, Club Parties, and Yard Sale are just a few. Even though we may be the warm “Sunshine State”, we do and did experience a Bomb Cyclone of frigid weather that hit us during the first week of January, which brings this segment of Bailey Speaks: Cold Weather – How cold is too cold for my fellow four-footed friends. A dog or cat who gets too cold could develop hypothermia, a condition that occurs when the dog or cat’s body temperature continues to fall, muscles stiffen, breathing and heart rate slow which could cause death. Even more, wind chill can affect your furry companion. If your pet has short hair along with our
elderly pets, they will feel the cold quite quickly. During the holidays, we gave our pampered pooches a holiday cut and, if you did, please have a backup plan by having a coat for them – brrr. Even having a coat on, we do sweat, so don’t leave it on for long periods of time. A coat must have a high collar (ex., turtleneck) and cover from the base of the tail to the belly. By having a coat, it helps regulate the temperature of the dog’s body, also, it makes the dog feel more comfortable on wearing one. Try to take it off; they may want to keep it on. Bring a towel during our routine walks. Snowbirds who have returned from up North, the tires of their cars may have a tendency to bring salt and other chemicals with them and deposit them here – be careful – those water spots may have that salt and/or chemicals in it. They could also have antifreeze from the cars from the cold areas in the water as well. Check your four-footed friends’ paw pads for cracks and redness and don’t forget to check between the toes. Taking off a winter coat from our fourfooted friends, we may discover a
bad doggy odor. Bathe us as little as possible; frequent bathing may remove essential oils and increase the chance of developing flaky skin. Use petroleum jelly on the paw pads to protect them from cracking. Give them plenty of water to make them well hydrated and to keep their skin from drying out. Just like in Summer weather, don’t leave them in a locked car in the cold weather; it too can act like a refrigerator holding in the cold and causing them to freeze to death. Of course, our Tara Woods canine companions are strictly indoor pets. They go out on their routine walks and to enjoy our doggy park (reminder: Keep our Pet Park clean and tell others if it’s too cold to PLEASE BRING US IN). Be aware of cold symptoms like unusual whining, barking, stop moving, and shivering. Have a warm place for a good night’s sleep. Please place the sleeping spot away from cold drafts or cold floors by supplying a warm blanket or a good bed. These are just a few commonsense tips to keep your four-footed friends safe and warm during the
time we get another cold spell. In the meantime, during my routine walks, I’ll try, but I’ll make no promise, to hunt down Punxsutawney Phil on Ground Hog’s Day (February 2nd) for Tara Woods. But so far it seems we have Punxsutawney Phil Gator instead. Maybe Tara Woods would make it official

on February 2nd that we’ll have an official Punxsutawney Phil Gator. If they see a shadow due to clear weather it will retreat back into its underwater home extending Winter for six more weeks, but if the Punxsutawney Phil Gator does not see his shadow due to cloudiness, Spring will arrive early. I guess we just have to wait and see. Well, don’t forget Valentine’s Day is February 14th. As a reminder, we may love flowers and chocolates, but chocolates are quite toxic to us – so NO!!! do not give them to us dogs. Give us a good hug and lick (I mean kiss) – a well-deserved one to boot. After all, what is Valentine’s Day? It’s a whole day Set aside to celebrate love Share laughter, hugs and Sweet things in life, And to think of the people Who touch our hearts. Special wishes, warm thoughts, too, Because you’re loved Because of you. Till next month, Happy Tails and have a wonderful Valentines’ Day and days to come. Bailey Happy Tails.

BRAVING THE COLD FOR THE CAUSE Facial Hair for Cancer Causes 10K/5K – 2 Mile Run By Marie Springsteen – President – 4 Words Foundation
4 Words Foundation, Inc. and 21st Century C.A.R.E. held their third annual cancer run/walk on January 6th. Hosted by Tara Woods and sponsored by Radiology Regional, Kelly Services, Hello SWFL, Applebee’s North Fort Myers, and Millennium Physician Group, the event was held to show support for Men’s Cancer Awareness and raise funds to support cancer awareness, education, and patient financial assistance in Southwest Florida. Corey Lazar of WINK TV once again participated as event emcee and has already committed to returning again for a fourth year in 2019. Other supporters on site were the North Fort Myers Fire Department who came to provide First Aid (if needed) and Pink Heals SWFL. While the final totals raised from the event have not yet been tabulated as of the writing of this article, preliminary amounts are approximately $4,000 being raised to support the above mission. Runners, walkers, and volunteers alike braved the frigid temperatures (by Florida standards) to participate in this event. Volunteers from 4 Words Foundation and 21st Century C.A.R.E. were out starting at 6:00 AM setting up for the event. Other volunteers joined the set-up by 7:30 AM, many of whom were Tara Woods residents such as Mark Van Ort and his brother Mike (who was here visiting), Ginny Owenburg, Agatha Breen, Gail Sanfillipo, and Hilda Dienes. A special thank you to Sam Jokich of Tropical Photography and a Tara Woods resident for donating his time and talent to taking photos of the event for us. 10K Runners took off from the starting line at 9:00 AM while the 5K Runners and Walkers started the course at 9:10 AM. All runners and walkers had finished the course in a little over one hour. The awards ceremony and Chance Raffle drawings were held directly after, and the event concluded by 11:00 AM. 4 Words Foundation, Inc. and 21st Century C.A.R.E. wish to extend our gratitude to Tara Woods for allowing us to hold the event in this beautiful community and our deepest appreciation to the volunteers, participants and sponsors for supporting this event. Thank you to all. See you next year.

RESIDENTS APPRECIATION DAY Frank Millette
Our Appreciation Day Honoree this year is Frank Millette. Frank’s love and dedication to Tara Woods is heartfelt and genuine. If you go into the Clubhouse I am sure you will find Frank working there on his many Tara Woods projects all hours of the day. Frank was born and raised in Brocton, Mass., the “Shoe City of New England”. He was the only boy raised with four sisters and because he was next to the youngest, his wife Ann states, “You can imagine how loved and spoiled he was!!!”. He proudly states that his father grew up with and was friends with Rocky Marciano, the Prize Fighter. Frank had the privilege of meeting him once as a child. After graduating from Brocton High School, Frank enlisted in the Navy during the Viet Nam War. The prayers of his Mother and Sisters were answered when Frank was assigned and served his term in Hawaii!!! After his discharge from the Navy, Frank drove a lumber truck and then got a job with the Massachusetts Department of Corrections. It was here that Frank developed his calm, cool, levelheadedness. He worked at the Bridgewater State Hospital for the Criminally Insane and after six months transferred to the State Prison for Maximum Security, working there for thirty years. As we know, it takes a special person to do that work and, Frank, indeed, is very special. He met Ann, the joy of Tara Woods, in December 1971 on a blind date and he knew a good thing at once. They were married soon after and were blessed with four children, two girls and two boys, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Frank asserts and proclaims he does NOT provide Ann with her ‘’witty’’ jokes. Frank carefully researched Florida real estate and they got caught up in the Magic of Tara Woods immediately. They have lived here for fourteen years (2003) and we have greatly benefited by their presence and generosity of time and talent. Frank, with Chuck Poveromo, started the CERT program, joined the Hurricane Committee, was FMO liaison and director, and has been on the TWHA Board for twelve years. Both Frank and Ann are the only married couple to both be on our Board at the same time. He also was very active on the Appreciation Day Committee for years. It is easy to see why Frank was chosen this year to be our Honoree and we are extremely grateful to you, Frank, for your love and dedication to Tara Woods!

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH Your NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH is working for you. TENNIS ASSOCIATION TREE Dear Tennis Association Members, Consider this a polite nudge for stepping into some type of leadership position for next year. We must vote on a new President, Director at Large, and Secretary. I am reminding you also that there exists the strong possibility that there will be no Round Robin social tournaments next year unless someone steps up in replacing Warren and Linda Engel for that position. Stepping up does not mean you “hold the bag” alone. It means you are simply “taking the point” on each activity’s direction and logistical acquisitions. There will be support given should you need it. Please consider contributing to leadership and carrying on the positive momentum of the last two years’ accomplishments. Hugs to all! You’ve been served! – Dakota and the Board APPRECIATION DAY Appreciation Day this year is on Saturday, February 24th. We hope we have great weather so everyone can get out and enjoy all the games that are provided. As for the games that are played on the tennis courts, Mike & Linda Renzulli have agreed to again chair the “Hole in the Board” game, George & Janet Daly will
again chair the “Bowling” tennis game, and George & Janice Johnston have also agreed to again chair the “Hit the Chairs” game. We give them a big “Thank You” for chairing these games again this year. Another possibility for a tennis game is to hit a tennis ball into a container similar to our blue recycling bins. (Putting a thick towel in the bottom of the container would help keep the balls from bouncing out.) This game could be played on Court 4. Please consider volunteering to run a game like this. If anyone has any other ideas for another tennis game, please let us know. Wouldn’t it be great to have a different game on all four tennis courts! We will need volunteers to work at these tennis games, so if you’re asked to help out, please say “Yes”. – Linda Engel ROUND ROBIN The second Round Robin of the season was scheduled for Sunday, January 28th. That Round Robin will be over with by the time you read this article. We hope to have a good report for you to read in the next issue of The Columns. The dinner hosted by Gwen Engel Windancer and Mary Ellen Gold consisted of Subs, Coleslaw, Chips, and Dessert. The courtside refreshments were to be provided by Carole & Frank Neveu.

For February 25th, Connie Lessard and Andy Hardy will arrange the dinner, and Art & Louise Frederick will provide the courtside refreshments. For March 25th, we have Frank Neveu arranging the dinner and Julie Howley handling the courtside refreshments. – Linda Engel TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE Women’s League – Angels The Angels away game at Sabal Springs on January 4th was postponed due to the very cold temperature. The make-up game was scheduled for Tuesday, January 9th, and the weather cooperated this time; they split the match with 3 wins and 3 losses each. Prior to the Christmas break, the Angels had 13 wins and 11 losses and Sabal Springs had 11 wins and 13 losses. So, the Angels now have 16 wins and 14 losses and stayed ahead of Sabal Springs in the standings. The following week, January 11th, the Angels were scheduled to play another away game, this time against the Six Lakes Pelicans who were tied with the Angels with 13 wins and 11 losses prior to the Christmas break. Because of the cold weather on January 4th, not all of the teams played their matches, so we don’t have an accurate count of the standings at this time. January 18th marked the end of the first half of the season, with the Angels hosting the women from Herons Glen. Women’s League – Fusion The Fusion team hosted the women’s team from Lake Fairways on January 4th. This was an important match as they were tied in the league prior to the Christmas break, with both teams having 16 wins and 8 losses. The Fusion won 2 sets and lost 4 sets, now making their record 18 wins and 12 losses. (The matches included two tiebreakers which ended with 1 win and 1 loss.) The following week, January 11th, the Fusion were scheduled to play Pine Lakes who were in 1st Place prior to the Christmas break, with 17 wins and 7 losses. January 18th marked the end of the first half of the season, with the Fusion traveling to Six Lakes to take on the Seagulls. We hope to have a good report on our standings for the next issue of The Colunns. – Linda Engel MEN’S LEAGUE White League – Stallions We are not yet half way through the season, so the positions of the teams will not be accurate until we have all played one another. There are ten teams in the league, and that means nine matches to complete the first half of the season. We are on the seventh match and need to play two more matches. Thus far the Stallions are in the

Since we have two White Teams, you can watch a match at home every Tuesday. The schedule is posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board in the hallway at the courts. – Fred Puhlfuerst White League – Mustangs Since last month’s Columns article on our Mustangs team, we finished with three very good wins in preparation for the rest of the 2017-2018 season which began January 9th versus the Tara Woods Stallions. Although we came out on the short end of the 5-1 score, we played some very good tennis for all our “Fans” of Tara Woods tennis. We will finish up the month of January with two home matches and one away. Keep up the good work, Mustangs!! – Ed Malatesta Blue League – Tigers All but two of our team members are back from either regular time Up North or from spending some holiday time with family. To date we are in the middle of the pack in the standings and have played against some stiff competition – the #1 team and the #3 team. We are now in the season where the rules of play are monitored more closely, resulting in a lineup that represents the regular players – ‘No ringers’. All on the team have been playing great and we look forward to a great season. – Bill Powers Submitted by Linda Engel
MAGIC SOFTBALL
As I write this, the team has just concluded its penultimate practice under the guidance of our manager, Bill Hubbs. The main focus of today’s practice was to improve our hitting and it appears to be paying dividends, though as with all dividends it is hard to tell the actual value of this dividend until we get the opportunity to play some games. By the time you are reading this we will have played six games and hopefully you folks will be proud to say that the “Tara Woods Magic Women’s and Men’s Slow Pitch Softball Team” are a sight to behold. As Heritage was unable to field a team this season and as Charlotte County did not let the season start on January 3rd as originally scheduled, our season will have started Wednesday, January 10th and the original schedule has been revamped with no playoffs and byes for some teams on some nights. No doubt the rumor mill will have informed you by now that Tara Woods has the best chance of having the best overall season record of
all seven teams in the league as we will be playing eighteen games while all others will only be playing seventeen games. I can hear the howls of protest from the other teams. How did this happen, you ask? Well, there will be twenty nights of softball and all teams except Tara Woods will have three byes (remember, no Heritage) while Tara Woods will have two byes. Smart, eh! Anyway, you will already know by now that this year’s season ticket prices remain unchanged from last year even though we have planned to have a much-improved season. We also wish to thank you at this time for your attendance at the Spaghetti fund raising dinner held January 18th. Thank you for your continued support and I encourage you to start planning to attend our victory parade and soiree at, a “to be announced” date sometime after the last game is played March 21st. Respectfully Submitted by Joseph “Canadian Joe” Plut

So, please, if you have items that are clean and useable that you are giving away, hold on to them until Friday, March 2nd. To all our wonderful volunteers, please put this date on your calendar: at 9:00 AM, we will need to move tables and set up for the sale. Also, the next day, Saturday, after 1:00 PM to put tables back in place.
This year’s Trash and Treasure is Saturday March 3rd. I also want to mention that some of our monies are used to care for the Butterfly Garden near the Gazebo, and we make donations to CROW and ECHO. If you don’t know about these organizations, please take the time to look them up on the internet. Rachelle DellaRocca What to Do Lawns: Fertilize lawns this month. Choose one (not a weed & feed) with no or very little phosphorus unless a soil test indicates the need for it. A fertilizer with controlled-release nitrogen will give longer lasting results. Grasses for Florida lawns: Bahiagrass, Bermudagrass, Centipedegrass, St. Augustinegrass, and Zoysiagrass. Prune Roses: Roses should be pruned this month to reduce and improve the overall form. After pruning, fertilize and apply a fresh layer of mulch. Blooming will begin eight to nine weeks after pruning. Fertilize Shrubs and Palms: Spread fertilizer evenly over the soil surface and water in. Follow with a fresh layer of mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Hold off pruning cold-damaged branches until new growth starts. Lawn Weeds: Apply a pre-emer-
COMPUTER CLUB
Welcome back to our Winter residents! The Computer Club provides free computer lessons for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursdays of each month is devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer. The second and fourth Thursdays are reserved for General subjects, and cov-
er a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. This is a great time to learn the Basics. The General topics will cover all sorts of subjects, programs, and hardware. These include an ongoing series on working with photos and multi-media, tablets, and e-book readers. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, re-
gent weed killer (not a weed and feed) to lawns this month to prevent germination of warm season weed seeds. Apply when temperatures rise to 65°F for 4-5 days. Timing is important for good control. Spray: When avocados and mango have lost 2/3 of blossoms, spray copper fungicide to control anthracnose. Fruits: If not done in January, fertilize fruit trees including citrus now. What to Plant Bedding Plants: Good performers in South Florida’s mild winter include impatiens, verbena, dianthus, strawflower, and lobelia. Bulbs: Many bulbs can be planted now. Divide large crowded clumps. Provide adequate water to establish. Some to try are Amazon lily, crinum, and agapanthus. Ground Covers: Consider replacing areas of grass with drought tolerant, low maintenance ground covers. Vegetables: Begin planting warm season crops this month. Sweet potato, cantaloupe, eggplant and squash can be started while temperatures are cool. Thank You! I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful, new Christmas Trees in the Lakes this year. It was a labor of love and some minor frustration, but with the new materials and design, they should last for many years. They were designed and constructed by Ken Clark and George Daly with help from Fred Puhlfuerst, Chuck Poveromo and Jack Boyle. Thanks to Bob Kuhns and John Hoos for help with putting them in and taking them out of the lakes and to Mark Van Ort for supplying the truck and helping to put the trees in and take them out for storage in the back storage area. I’m sure everyone noticed the new addition of the moving reindeer to Santa’s sleigh. Special thanks to Mike Girty for rescuing this discarded display from the side of the road and refurbishing it to its natural splendor, and also for sprucing up the sleigh for its
annual appearance in the Golf Cart Parade. Trees and sleighs just don’t appear by themselves. It takes a special kind of caring from special people who work hard to keep the Magic alive and the Tara Woods community a special place to live. The Clubhouse looked beautiful again this Christmas. I heard from a number of people who visited other communities, that our Clubhouse was by far the most beautiful and festive. Thanks again to all the clubs and groups that use their time and talents to decorate a tree representative of their group. The ideas are endless and together create a wonderful holiday atmosphere for the community. We have room for one or two more trees if your group would like to become part of this festive tradition. I hope to see many of you at the numerous functions coming up in the next two months of our busiest season. There is something for everyone. If you would like to participate, but have trouble with mobility, please let me know and I’ll try to arrange for transportation. I would like to see as many “old” faces as new at as many events as possible. Janet Daly, Activities Coordinator janetdaly@yahoo.com 239-567-2285
