We received outstanding feedback by everyone on such a wonderful, sentimental time honoring those married 50 plus years. Each couple was escorted to the front where they received a rose, had their photo taken and were seated for special recognition. They all enjoyed the first dance together.

FROM THE BOARD ROOM Tara Woods continues to prosper, grow and evolve. I hope you had the opportunity to visit the new model homes on Residents Open House Days. There are a total of 39 homes planned for this next phase. It was neat to not only see the different models available, but to examine some of the cutting edge decorating ideas. Speaking of evolving, a number of large pine trees were recently removed from near the horseshoe pits. These trees were infested with beetles. Other trees might have to be removed and new ones planted as the lake front evolves. Our growing group of Pickleball Players, currently playing 3 times a week on the tennis courts, is looking forward to “their own” Pickleball courts. Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. Two, three or four players use
solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated ball, similar to a whiffle ball, over a net. The game was invented one summer afternoon in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the nation per NBC news. We look forward to seeing work start on the courts, which will be located around the lake area of our recreational campus. The horseshoe pits will run along Tara Circle on the north side of the lake near the putting green. HEADS UP---Darlene Bradley, Community Manager, and the Tara Woods Homeowners Association have arranged a “Dialogue with Darlene” evening for ALL residents of Tara Woods. It will be in the Clubhouse on Thursday, March 29th, starting at 7:00 PM. Darlene will share timely information and answer written questions. Starting
March 15th, written questions can be dropped off in the mail slot located outside the Homeowners Office in the Clubhouse or at the Tara Woods Office. Come on out! DID YOU KNOW THAT – you can help your Tara Woods Homeowners Association and the environment at the same time? Just put your aluminum cans out to the curb by 9:00 AM on the first and third Saturday of each month. Andy “The Can Man” Vanderplaats and his crack crew will pick up the cans and deposit them in the trailer out back near the Dog Park for recycling. Last year your efforts amounted to over $1,500.00 for our Association. Keep up the good work and thank you to Andy and regular volunteer collectors Ed Simko, Andrea Snyder, Jon Porter and Bill Black! During the next few months, the community will have plenty of parties, Pancake Breakfasts, and Resident Appreciation Day with games, food and music to end the event. Be sure to check the bulletin boards at the Clubhouse for future events for the next few months. Safety is our main concern for all our residents and their guests. The first week of February brought us cool weather, rain and temperatures in the 80’s; this is par for winters in Florida, however, NO SNOW! Our turnout for Tara Woods residents to tour the new homes was a big success and that same weekend we had our Yard Sale. As you can see, events at Tara Woods are plentiful. We served more than 400 hot dogs, chips, and drinks, and all marveled at the new homes. The following weekend was also a success for outsiders to view the homes and eat hot dogs along with registering for our TV giveaway. The Office staff issued golf cart stickers. I hope all had a chance to receive your new stickers. If you missed the week, please go by the Office after 2:00 PM Monday thru Friday. You must bring your golf cart

Is a Managed Account Right for You?
As an investor, you’ll face many decisions over the years. How much should you invest? Where should you put your money? When is it time to sell some investments and use the proceeds to buy others? Some people enjoy making these choices themselves – but not everyone. Consequently, the type of investor you are will influence your thinking about whether to open a managed account. As its name suggests, a managed account – sometimes known as an “advisory” account – essentially is a portfolio of stocks, bonds and other investments chosen by a professional investment manager who makes the buy and sell decisions. Typically, each managed account has an investment objective based on your goals, and you may have some voice in investment choices – for example, you may be able to request that the manager avoid certain investments. Or, you might still work with a personal financial advisor who can help you identify and quantify your goals, define your risk tolerance, and track changes in your family situation – and who can then use this information to help guide the investment manager’s choices. Beyond this basic structure, managed accounts can vary greatly in terms of administration, reporting, fees and minimum balance. So, assuming you meet the requirements for a managed account, should you consider one? There’s really no one right answer for everyone. But three factors to consider are cost, control and confidence. Cost – Different managed accounts may have different payment arrangements. However, it’s common for a money manger to be paid based on a percentage of assets under management. So, if your manager’s fee is 1% and your portfolio contains $100,000, the manager earns $1,000 per year, but if the value of your portfolio rises to $200,000, the manager earns $2,000. Because the manager has a personal stake in the portfolio’s success, this arrangement could work to your advantage. Be aware, though, that other fees may be associated with your account. Control – With any managed account, you will give up some, or perhaps all, of your power to make buy-and-sell decisions. If you have built a large portfolio, and you’re busy with work and family, you may like the idea of delegating these decisions. And, as mentioned above, you can still oversee the “big picture” by either working through a financial advisor or, at the least, having your goals, risk tolerance and investment preferences dictate a money manager’s decisions. But you will have to decide for yourself how comfortable you are in ceding control of your portfolio’s day-to-day transactions. Confidence – It’s essential that you feel confident in a managed account’s ability to help you meet your goals. And the various elements of a managed account may well give you that assurance. For example, some managed accounts include automatic rebalancing of assets, which, among other things, can help you achieve tax efficiency. Other features of a managed account – such as the experience and track record of the manager – also may bolster your confidence.
Ultimately, you’ll need to weigh all factors before deciding whether a managed account is right for you. In any case, it’s an option worth considering.

BAILEY SPEAKS March is here and remember the saying: “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb”. Proverb: The month of March usually starts with “cold, unpleasant weather, but ends mild and pleasant.” But, since we have snowbirds that come to visit us in Florida, we all can relate to what may lie ahead. As we all know, March has St. Patrick’s Day (Saturday, March
17th), so I’m on the lookout to hunt or locate those wee little green Leprechauns. But with my non-Irish blood in me, I have to get my master to go to the grocery store and buy a box of “Lucky Charms” cereal for me. It has a Leprechaun on the front, and, of course, they are “Magically Delicious,” Yum, Yum. So, in this segment of Bailey Speaks, for all dog lovers you can
test your luck (even if you may or may not be Irish) on Bailey’s Dog Breeds Word Search Puzzle. Maybe you’ll find your breed of dog listed. Have fun till next month. Happy Tails, Bailey… P.S. TREASURES OF TARA D
o you know the journey of Dominic Cirillo? He was born a healthy baby and grew up in South Philly with his parents and two sisters. At his high school graduation from Bishop Neuman he was honored with two awards. The first was the prestigious award for his PERSEVERANCE, INDUSTRY and INITIATIVE; the second was for perfect attendance. He dreamed of a career working on Naval ships and was employed at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard. At 21 his dream was shattered when a plank fell 46 feet, crushing his hard hat, collapsing his lungs, fracturing six ribs, fracturing back bones, and causing numerous injuries. He could only move his arms and head and was told by doctors that he would NEVER walk again. Dominic, filled with courage and motivation, asked the doctors, “What do I need to do in order to walk again?” After years of rehab, hard work and determination he is able to walk with the aid of crutches. He enrolled in Computer Management School and returned to the Naval Shipyard in the Data Processing Office. To further his career, he attended St. Joseph’s University night school for TWELVE years and graduated in 1986 with a degree in accounting. He worked for the government for over 40 years, 30 of those years working in Budget. Dominic claims it is his deep faith that motivates and inspires him. His wife, Judy, grew up in Carteret, New Jersey with her parents and two sisters. After graduating from Carteret High School, she worked for various companies, one position being a manager for an oil company. (I am sure you are familiar with all the oil companies on the New Jersey Turnpike!!) Judy would go on a yearly retreat to Elkins Park, PA, and one year Judy’s Catholic retreat group planned a trip to Hawaii with another retreat group from Philly. Dominic belonged to this group and they met in Hawaii. Judy reports that Dominic had offered to drive her lady friends back to their hotel after a “fun” night. Judy was so impressed by his kindness, completely overlooking his handicap. They began to date and were married two years later. They have been married for 37 years and are blessed with a beautiful daughter, Amy. In 1996 the Philly Naval Yard closed and Dominic was transferred to the Norfolk Naval Yard and worked there for 10 years, commuting home every other weekend. In 1996 the Government awarded Dominic a Gold Medal for his exceptional performance. They cited his attendance, excellent relationships with fellow employees and his outstanding performance. Dominic is well matched by his wife, who is extremely kind and generous. She works full time as a Para Professional at Manatee Elementary School and frequently helps some of the needy children in her quiet, humble way. They love Tara Woods and have been here since 2011. Dominic is presently the treasurer of the New York/New Jersey Club and does daily exercises in the pool. Last year was a highlight in their life when Amy married Kevin Gallo and Dom was able to walk her down the aisle. Dominic’s courage and perseverance are exemplary, and his qualities of PERSEVERANCE, INDUSTRY and INITIATIVE exhibited in high school have been an inspiration to all who know him. The Steamboat Loop Block Party W
e started the year with our 15th Block Party on January 13th. Our main dish was Pork Loins and Applesauce which was paired by wonderful side dishes brought by our wonderful cooks on Steamboat Loop.
We all joined in games arranged by Judy Machnicz. We had a 50/50 where we raised $100.00 which we gave away and another $100.00 that was given to our neighbors in a drawing of the tickets purchased for the dinner. All had a wonderful time; thanks to all who helped to make the party a success. We look forward to next year when we can come up with new games and a different menu. Thank you all for your support.

March meeting will be held on F R I D AY, MARCH 2ND at 5:00 PM This meeting’s meal will be the PIG ROAST and the food will be catered. Menu is pork, roasted potatoes, and baked beans. There will also be a dessert. BYOB You must have a ticket to partake in the meal. The deadline for purchasing a ticket was February 17th. The reason for the early cut-off date is because the caterers needed at least a ten-day notice as to how many

dinners they need to prepare. There will also be a GOLF CART RACE at the beginning of the evening. There will be two classes, a 36 volt and a 48 volt. An entry fee of $2.00 is required, with all the monies collected paid back in prizes. A sign-up sheet is posted in the Clubhouse if you would like to enter your golf cart in the race. Have your carts ready and on the road east of the Clubhouse at 3:45 PM. This evening will also be the election of officers for the upcoming 2018-2019 season. All four offices of president, vice president, treasurer and secretary are open for nominations. A nominating committee, con-
sisting of Shelly Lubich and Peggy Gamble, was established to recruit people for these offices, but nominations will also be taken from the floor. Music for the evening will be provided by Dale Humphrey. Arlene Greene, Secretary

This year’s Trash and Treasure is Saturday, March 3rd! I want to remind everyone that the donations to the Trash and Treasure make it possible for the Fashion Show to be a Free Event, to keep up the beautiful Butterfly Garden, and for the Garden Club’s donations to CROW and ECHO. So, please bring clean and usable items that you wish to donate to the Clubhouse on Friday, March 2nd. And to all our wonderful volunteers, please put these dates on your calendar: On Friday March 2nd, at 9:00 AM, we will need to move tables and set up for the sale. Also the next day, Saturday, March 3rd, after 1:00 PM, we need to put the tables back in place. Our last meeting for this year is Saturday, March 10th. We will have discussed our luncheon plans at the February meeting. Since this is due before that date, I have no information yet. I will put up a poster with all the information in the Clubhouse. We are looking at Friday, April 6th, as a possible date. Please remember the luncheon is for Garden Club members only. COMPUTER CLUB The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer lessons for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month is devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer. The second and fourth Thursday is reserved for General subjects and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. This is a great time to learn the Basics. Last month, we discussed Windows 10 and smart phones, as well as the basics of the Windows desktop, programs,
files, and folders. The General topics include an ongoing series on working with photos and multimedia, tablets, and e-book readers. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private
lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. TENNIS ASSOCIATION UPDATE Dear Tennis Enthusiasts, Your Vice President (Frank Neveu) and I met with Darlene Bradley, who is the Community Manager of Tara Woods, on January 30th. Among the items discussed were the AED, resurfacing of the tennis courts, and general maintenance strategies. These are the facts concerning the resurfacing of the courts: My recollection and the documentation shows that the courts were resurfaced only three years ago. A request was made by Frank and me to resurface the courts possibly next year. Darlene will submit that request for next year. The AED (defibrillator) device has been ordered and has been promised to be installed sometime this year. Frank and I were also informed that upon approval first, we can purchase tarps to be used for shade. They would be purchased from Home Depot and reimbursement would be made. We will be given access to a leaf blower in being proactive to better maintenance of the tennis courts as the need arises. I am asking and reminding all members that your concerns and requests be made to the Tennis Association Board first; our liaison member will then take those requests to the Office. We have agreed and voted on at the past meetings that one member will represent the tennis community with all concerns to keep the data and outcome
accurate, and to prevent massive individual trafficking for Darlene as well. If you want to volunteer to lend physical help in maintenance, we would appreciate that very much. Frank Neveu is doing much of this work himself, along with Fred Puhlfuerst, and also Mark Van Ort, the Maintenance Man for Tara Woods. The meeting was held in a spirit of amicable fostering of the community at large, and much of the rumor and myths were dispelled as to how and when various requests are handled. Patience, understanding, acceptance, and working together with the Office and membership is a viable way for our tennis community to flourish and receive what it needs. I hope this news informs you and has provided some illumination on what heretofore has been unclear. Live well my friends. – Dakota and the Board TENNIS ASSOCIATION MEETING The Tara Woods Tennis Association had a busy and productive meeting on January 28th. Some of the items discussed are listed here. The games for Appreciation Day on February 25th are set up and ready to go. The members voted unanimously
to raise the dues for the next tennis season. Dues will increase to $10.00 per person effective November 1, 2018. Members also voted to install a practice board on the tennis courts. George Daly and Bob Polenska offered to take the lead on this project. It was reported that a good time was had by all at the Tara Woods Tennis Association Party on January 14th. The piñata was a big hit. Thanks go out to Arlene Franchini, Gwen Engel Windancer, Mary Ellen Gold, Frank Neveu, and Phil Franchini for all their hard work to help make this event fun for all involved. At next month’s Tennis Association Meeting on February 25th we will vote in a new President, Secretary, and Director at Large. Please think about stepping up into a leadership role. – Debbie Polenska, Secretary “You’re Served” January Party On January 14th the Tara Woods Tennis Association held it’s very first “You’re Served” members party featuring appetizers and beverages, followed by an inspiring tennis speech from President Dakota Windancer. During the friendly tennis competition, refreshing courtside snacks were provided by Carole & Frank Neveu. In the evening, very large and delicious subs were enjoyed by 29 people who gathered to socialize and eat after the Tennis Association Meeting. The dinner hosted by Gwen Engel Windancer and Mary Ellen Gold also consisted of Coleslaw, Chips, and Dessert. We have two more Round Robins this season. You are strongly encouraged to sign up and come out to play some fun tennis. For February 25th, Connie Lessard and Andy Hardy will arrange the dinner, and Art & Louise Frederick will
provide the courtside refreshments. For March 25th, we have Carole & Frank Neveu arranging the dinner and Julie Howley handling the courtside refreshments. – Linda Engel TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE Women’s League – Angels The Angels make-up match with their sister team, the Fusion, which was played on Tuesday, February 6th, resulted in an even split, with both teams winning 3 and losing 3. As of February 9th, the Angels have 29 wins and 25 losses, after having played 54 matches. The Angels had a make-up match scheduled for February 14th against Herons Glen, the last place team. If the Angels would win all 6 sets, which is a strong possibility, that would put them in a win/loss tie with the Tara Woods Fusion team. Women’s League – Fusion As of February 9th, the Fusion team has 35 wins and 25 losses, having played 60 matches. This puts them in 4th place out of eight teams. They are just one win short of the 3rd place team. Their make-up match with their sister team, the Angels, was played on Tuesday, February 6th. The Fusion won all 3 sets on Court 2, but lost all 3 sets on Court 1, one of which was a tie-breaker. – Linda Engel

Frank Neveu, our Vice President, honored Linda and Warren Engel for their numerous years of organizing the season’s monthly Round Robin tournaments and Fred Puhlfuerst for his years of dedication and support to the tennis community. For fun there was a tennis ball piñata challenge where members and their spouse or guest tried smashing it. It was successfully busted, and members scrambled to the floor for tennis items and other goodies that were inside. A 50/50 raffle was held, and Dick Heffron won the pot! To wrap up the party, coffee and a tennis cake were “Served”! Arlene Franchini, Director at Large ROUND ROBIN Well, we did luck out with the weather! The Weather Channel had forecasted 80% chance of rain in the morning. I thought all our work in preparation for our second Round Robin of the season would be for naught. But the sun did shine, and 20 tennis players enjoyed that sunshine most of the time they were on the courts. We did get some rain sprinkles halfway through our last tennis session, but that didn’t stop the players from continuing to play. It did sprinkle a little heavier later on when we were putting things away, but by then everyone else was back home. So, given the early forecast of rain, I would say it was a pretty good day for tennis.

First of all, our scheduled match the last week of January was postponed until further notice. The entire opposing team was incapacitated due to the flu. The first week of February we had a bye in our schedule which complicated things a little more. We are currently waiting on word from the opposing team from the last week in January play date to reschedule the match. We are still in the middle of the pack despite all the glitches we are
faced with. We are hoping to start regular play some time the second week of February and have the make-up game soon after that. All the players are having a good season thus far and we hope to move up in the standings in the coming weeks. – Bill Powers FUN TENNIS EVENT Due to a league match cancellation on February 1st, the Tara Woods Tigers team hosted a fun afternoon of tennis with the Cape Coral Racquet Club. It is Thursday, February 8th, as I write this, trying to gather my ideas for the monthly softball article for the Tara Woods Columns newspaper. I’m pleased to report that Tara Woods had a convincing win against Pine Lakes on January 29th. In a subsequent game the Herons Glen team was seen dialing 911 on their cell phones as Tara Woods infielders and our pitcher kept them off the scoreboard for the first two innings of the January 31st game. Herons Glen did eventually eke out a victory, however Tara Woods received accolades from Herons Glen for their stellar defensive work that night. It was 15 months ago when I no longer wanted to be a softball virgin. I decided to try out for the Tara Woods softball team and was given the number 75 jersey when it was confirmed that I had two legs that worked. My reasoning was that this was slow pitch softball. Being a man in my prime, how hard can it be anyway for a jock like me. Well, you softball virgins and swimming pool floaters, I invite you to try out to be a member of the elite Tara Woods softball team and see if you are first able to hit the ball, then sprint to first base quickly before the ball you hit is in the glove of the first baseman. By the way, I was told that it is not permissible to stand at home plate and admire the absolutely beautiful hit that you have just made. You need to run not to first base but through first base. Once safely at first base and no wheelchair in sight, you need to get to second base all the while watching what the current batter is up to. If she hits the ball, you have to decide if it is safe to run as the ball flies through the rarefied air of Punta Gorda or bounces on the ground. At this point, the batter up has one strike and one ball on his charge without the pitcher having even thrown the ball once towards that batter. You explain that to Babe Ruth. If you manage to acquire 3 strikes (1+2), you’re out. If it’s four balls (1+3) you get to walk to first with or without a cane. Many of our team like the walk option, however it is not easy to accomplish as those high-flying balls moving at 10 mph towards home plate can be tricky to read. If the ball hits anywhere on the wooden board, even the back corner, you get rewarded with a strike call even though it would appear to the untrained eye that it was physically impossible to hit the ball on that trajectory, unless possibly you were using a pitching wedge. If the next batter up hits a single, you must use all of your energy to move quickly to second base, arriving standing up and safe. Space does not allow me to finish this epic story today, so you will have to stay tuned for the April edition of the Columns to read about the exciting conclusion of a Tara Woods softball players journey home. Tennis from - page 27 MEN’S LEAGUE White League – Stallions The Stallions, one of our White Teams, is fighting the good battle among the ten teams in the White League. As of this writing we are in 4th place in the league. We have been hit with the flu and other ailments. However, we stand against the opposition and do our best on the court. We have seven more matches, three of which are at home. So, check the schedule on the tennis board and support your local tennis team. – Fred Puhlfuerst White League – Mustangs Since last month’s report, we have continued to play good tennis, despite losing players to injury, illness, a Tara Woods cruise, and other personal and family situations. The level of the league’s teams has improved as the season has progressed, yet we have remained competitive. However, we must remember this is a social activity as well as a competitive activity, and we continue to meet some outstanding people from the different league communities, as well as knowing our own teammates and substitutes on a more personal basis. While you are reading this, we will be finishing our schedule, looking especially to Round 2 of the Tara Woods Mustangs vs. the Tara Woods Stallions
