MANAGER’S CORNER The past few weeks have definitely been different at Tara Woods. Prior to the hurricane preparations, we did have a great Labor Day Party with lots of food, games and activities enjoyed by all. Hurricane forecasts for our residents had everyone getting prepared for the weather-related issues (just like what our neighbors in snowstorm states prepare for). Everyone goes to the local grocery stores, banks, drugstores, and gas stations. This is the place where we socialize when we have events like hurricane forecasts.

Irma was very kind to our residents; she mainly was after our trees and lamp posts. Monday morning, we had crews in for tree trimming, collecting debris and making sure our residents felt safe...here are photos of our staff going to pick up food from the National Guard and having residents who were so kind to help the staff deliver food for two days until our electric service was restored. We were able to have an End of Summer Bash on September 23rd, with a live DJ and wonderful outing for all...we needed time to relax and have fun. As we moved into the third

week of September, we were able to relax and get back to our normal schedules of trash, horticulture, and recycle pickups. We feel very fortunate for no serious injuries here at Tara Woods. Football season, fall events, Thanksgiving, Christmas and the return of our northern residents are being anticipated by all. I would like to send out a big heartfelt Thank You to all who helped and worked so diligently in a stressful time. Darlene Bradley Property Manager

full-time resident at 19536 Charleston Circle and is originally from Indiana. He is a self-employed real estate agent. He is the parent of three children. He enjoys golf, the beach, traveling and his grandkids.

FROM THE PRESIDENT We survived Hurricane Irma! Some homes suffered more damage than others and some residents suffered more than others through five days of no electricity, but on the whole the community came together and experienced the real “Magic” of Tara Woods. After Irma’s visit, so many people stepped forward to help their neighbors, from opening their doors to host residents without a/c and hot water, to offering their refrigerators and freezers to take food for those without electricity, to delivering hot coffee every morning to those without electric, to serving free hot dogs, chips and soda to the workers who came to clean up our park and worked on getting our electricity back. Thank you to all these good Tara Woods residents who were looking out for their neighbors and their neighbors’ homes. A special Thank You goes out to resident, Karen McKearney, who had her family with her during the storm. We were extremely lucky to have her daughter, Sharon, and son-in-law, Ryan, and two grandsons, Cory and Kirk, and their two friends, Jake and Julian, take shelter at the Clubhouse during Irma. They proved to be an immense help with setting up and maintaining the generators during the storm, allowing for enough electricity to power the special needs refrigerator and the icicle lights in the Clubhouse. Being short staffed, we were very grateful when they stepped in to offer their assistance. I guess every once in a while Mother Nature thinks we need to be reminded that we live in a prime

hurricane zone. We lucked out once again when this storm downgraded to a category 2 just before it hit Fort Myers. Let’s hope and pray we don’t experience this “reminder” again very soon. Thank you to the New York/ New Jersey Club for hosting the Labor Day party. About 140 people enjoyed the BJ’s rotisserie chicken and all the fixin’s and the optional shrimp and clam appetizer. Thank you to Judy & Bill Machnicz and Dave & Peggy Boncher, who were made honorary New York/New Jersey-ites for the day, for running the Bean Bag Baseball. Did I mention that the ladies were victorious once again this year? I hope you have your tickets for the Halloween Party on Saturday, October 28th hosted by the Midwest Club. This is another fun party with great food. Make sure you get your tickets before the deadline. This is the last time you’ll be hearing about the Community Opportunity Fair to be held on Saturday, November 18th, from 1:00 - 3:00 PM in the Clubhouse. Reservations are coming in, but there are many more groups that could participate. Please consider signing up your group for a table. Reservation forms are included in this edition of the Columns. Fill it out and get it to me or any Board member. This is a fun afternoon, as well as informational. Whether you are new to Tara Woods or just don’t get out much, the Fair is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the many groups that have something to offer to fill your days and nights with fun and friendship.

At the Homeowners meeting in October, Lou Dunning introduced the formation of a new Decorating Committee to oversee and decorate the outside of the community. We received a generous donation of great Christmas decorations from Rachelle Dellarocca that will get us started, but we need the helping hands of residents to make it happen. Please call Lou if you would like to be a part of this new committee this year. As of this writing, there is no host for the Christmas Party on Saturday, December 2nd. Hopefully someone will step up soon to organize this traditional party. Give me a call if you would be willing to help with this event. Now that the season has started, Saturday Morning Coffee will occasionally be host to some special speakers on different topics of interest to our community. Lou Dunning will keep you aware of them, as well as any special guests we have at our monthly Homeowners Meeting. At the November 13th Membership Meeting Lou has arranged for the new liaison from the Sheriff’s Department, Staff Officer Gerald McNulty, to introduce himself and tell us about his function in our community. When you see a sheriff’s car driving around the community, it is most likely Officer McNulty. I hope you will attend to give him a hearty Tara Woods welcome. Welcome back to everyone. I hope you are ready to join in all the fun as we begin a new “season” in Tara Woods. Janet Daly

Take Action on ‘Giving Tuesday’ … and Beyond You probably already know about the two big shopping days – Black Friday and Cyber Monday – that follow Thanksgiving. But did you know that Giving Tuesday is observed on Nov. 28? By showing your generosity on this day and throughout the holiday season, you can benefit charitable organizations and your loved ones – and your gifts can even provide you with some potential financial advantages. So, what sort of gifts should you consider? Here are a couple of suggestions for the charitable organizations you support: Give cash. Any charitable group will welcome cash contributions. And if the charity has 501(c)(3) status (named after the section of the Internal Revenue Code that governs such groups), your gift can offer you a tax deduction. So, for example, if you are in the 25 percent tax bracket and you give $1,000 to a qualified charity, you will be able to deduct $250 from your taxes. (You will need to itemize deductions to gain this tax benefit.) Generally speaking, your maximum deduction is limited to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income. You might be able expand the reach of your cash gifts through your workplace. Some companies will match some of your contributions to charitable organizations. Also, your employer may allow you to apply for larger grants to support nonprofit groups, especially those in which many employees are actively involved. Donate appreciated stocks. If you have stocks that have grown significantly in value, you may want to donate them to a charitable group. You will be allowed a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the gift on the date of the transfer, even if your original cost was only a fraction of today’s value. Furthermore, you will avoid the capital gains taxes you’d have to pay if you sold the stock, provided you’ve held the stock for at least a year. You don’t have to restrict your giving to charitable groups. If you have children or grandchildren, you might want to provide them with the gift of higher education by contributing to a 529 college savings plan. A 529 plan offers several benefits. Contribution limits vary from state to state, but are generally quite high – you can accumulate more than $200,000 per beneficiary in many state plans, although special gifting provisions may apply. And you can typically invest in the 529 plan offered by any state, even if you don’t live there, although you might not receive the tax benefits – such as deductions or tax credits – you’d get if you invested in your own state’s plan. Also, all withdrawals from 529 plans are free from federal income taxes, and possibly from state income taxes, as long as the money is used for a qualified college or graduate expense of the beneficiary you’ve named – typically, your child or grandchild. (Withdrawals for expenses other than qualified education expenditures may be subject to federal, state and penalty taxes.) Be aware, though, that 529 plans may affect financial aid, particularly if you’ve set up a plan for your grandchild, so you might want to consult with a college’s financial aid office before the child heads off to school. Through your gifts to charitable groups and your family members, you can take the spirit of Giving Day and extend it throughout the holiday season – and even beyond.

First, and most importantly, Thank God we all made it through the 2017 hurricane season, so far! It was definitely a very scary ordeal. Long, long

drives on I75 North, pounding of hammers securing the hurricane shutters, the wild wind blowing through the massive palm trees, wondering and waiting about electricity; all of these events have made for a very harrowing time. It may even cause you to pause for a moment and ask yourself, why am I living in Southwest Florida? Tara Woods may just be your best answer! time in tight quarters, sharing all of your anxieties and concerns with others just like you; we are nearly back to normal now and starting a brand new season at Tara Woods. Welcome back your neighbors, be involved with the meetings, plan all of your dinners, dances, and fun times. But why not start something new, adventurous, fun, and fulfilling. Try Music! We are welcoming back all of our New Image Chorus members, present, past and hopefully future individuals. Do you have to sing like Pavarotti? No, we accept one and all, who just want to sing, laugh, and enjoy the friendship. We are currently under new leadership of Carol McGowen as our new Director Our time has changed by an hour to 12:30 PM on Mondays at The Clubhouse. Come and join us; try it out; it just might surprise you! We will be looking out for you! Sheila Piganelli

ENTERTAINING NEWS So Ladies and Gentlemen, this month I am making a request for items that will likely be needed for this season’s play. We are looking to use the following items on stage for the month of February and for two weeks in March. The items are: • 2 side chairs, padded material type (not wooden), do not need to match, low backs • 1 or 2 small cubes to be used as a coffee table • a 3 or 4-tiered shelf that stands alone • any sports memorabilia that can be displayed on walls or small shelves • an authentic football If you have any of these items and would allow us to use them on stage next year, please call me, Pat Dunning at 599-4490. Someone will come and lowok at the items and see if they will work for us to be part of the stage set, and then we will ar-

range with you to have them on stage after the stage is constructed in February. These items will be noted in the Playbill thanking you for your generosity; the items will be returned to you at the end of the weekend of the play in March. Thanking you in advance for any help you can give us. Volunteers do not necessarily have the time, they just have the heart. Pat Dunning Entertainers

Welcome back members! The first meeting to kick off the 20172018 season is on Sunday, November 26th. I am proud to announce that we will be hosting a members only party in the Clubhouse on January 14th. Details will follow as soon as we firm up the complete itinerary. At our February 25th meeting we will be electing two new officers to serve on the Tennis Association Board. For the upcoming tennis season, each Tara Woods tennis team is being supplied one case of new tennis balls to kick off their league play. This was possible due to the fundraiser held last March-so, the Board’s gratitude to all of you for helping and attending. Oh! I almost forgot. The January 14th party is a “no cost” event

due to our collective efforts at the March fundraiser. Please put it on your January calendar and plan on attending. It should be a lot of fun and a nice way to reconnect after a wild Summer. Many blessings to you all for continued health, happiness, and prosperity of wealth and spirit. Hugs. – Dakota Windancer ROUND ROBIN Some of this information was already published in the October Columns, but for those of you who were not here to receive the Columns, I am repeating some things. Our first Round Robin of the season is set for Sunday, November 26th. Janice & George Johnston have volunteered to host the dinner, which will consist of Pizza, Caesar Salad, and Ice Cream Sundaes. Fred Puhlfuerst has vol-

unteered to handle the courtside refreshments. The sign-up sheet for the tennis portion of the Round Robin will be posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board in early November. Be sure to sign up to play tennis that day – the more people who sign up, the more variety of pairings we can arrange. There is no Round Robin scheduled in December. The dates for the remaining Round Robins are January 28th, February 25th, and March 25th. We still need volunteers to host the dinners and we also need people to handle the courtside snacks on these dates. – Linda Engel TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE Practice has already started for those team members who are already in Tara Woods. players are still in the transition of driving to Tara Woods from their Northern states. We have 6 ladies on each team this season, with 2 shared subs. The list of team members is posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board. Coincidentally, the Angels have 5 full-time Tara Woods residents and 1 part-time resident on their team while the Fusion has only 1 full-time resident and 5 part-time residents on their team. When all of the players are back in Tara Woods, practice will be in full swing. Both teams practice Tuesdays at 9:00 AM. – Linda Engel MEN’S LEAGUE White League-Stallions It is a new season and the former Red Team Stallions are now a level White Team. We have combined with the other Tara Woods White Team players (the Mustangs), and the two Team Captains have chosen their team members. Both teams will be playing on Tuesdays at 1:30 PM, which will require fans to choose which team to watch. We will all play our

best, so come out and show your support. – Fred Puhlfuerst White League-Mustangs Nothing to report. Blue League Since the last update in October, a few more players have arrived in Tara woods, and a few more are expected in November. The season officially starts on Thursday, November 2nd, and we are all looking forward to a winning year – and we pray that the rainy season is at last over and that the courts stay dry. – Bill Powers

Pickleball is a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong. Using a paddle slightly larger than a ping pong paddle and a wiffle ball, it is played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net. It can be played as doubles or singles. Come join a fun group every Sunday, Monday and Thursday at 4:00 PM on Court 4. Pickleball is open to everyone. Balls and paddles are available.

BAILEY SPEAKS Bow Wow Wow - BOW WOW!! Whew, how time flies, other than experiencing Hurricane Irma that came to our State of Florida on September 10th. Tara Woods hit a bump in the road at the time of impact. But, like the movie “Gone with the Wind”, our “Hometown” community did a good job of handling clean-up quite well. Even we who have received some amount of damage to our residences, we put our paws forward-I mean our efforts on helping one another - by opening their homes for shelters, feeding us, and rebuilding. Sure, it was a struggle at first by realizing one side had electricity while the other side didn’t, but, once again, with patience and time, it came back on. Even though I couldn’t be here for the brunt of September 10th, we managed, with other couples, and with my fellow furry four-footed friends (4 dogs and a cat) we traveled to safer ground. Yes, even though we left early, it was touch and go on traveling by road – with bumper-to-bumper traffic, then finding a place to stay with our family of furry friends. Where we were, if they had to state that mandatory evacuation was necessary, it was not guaranteed that we could stay. But we all lucked out and made make shift until it was safe to come home to see the reality of our homes in Tara Woods. Actually, after all of this and stories to be told to one another upon returning, it barks down to this, I mean it boils down to this… It’s YOU and all of YOU who make Tara Woods what it is, along with the help from others and organizations who make it safe. God Bless everyone. Welcome back to our snowbirds returning to our community to make our last couple of months great by sharing their eventful summer stories with one another. We also hope that 2018 is a good year to come for four legs or two. As for an end as Bailey Speaks…Remember, play it safe and be patient. Happy Tails, Bailey P.S. Have a Happy Thanksgiving – and eat more chicken … hee! hee! And don’t forget our Doggy Park is open to all our four-footed furry friends. All our trees are re-rooted and benches are back in place, so you and your pet can have fun and play once again. Enjoy it! Be sure to pick up after your pet in order to keep our park clean. See ya next month.

It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. The stakes are very low. Call Polly Brown, 7311614, if you’d like to join us – she’ll fill you in on the details or answer any questions you may have.

THE GARDEN CLUB

What to Plant Bedding Plants: Create a display of fall colors with cool season plants. Some to try are impatiens, strawflower, cape daisy, and pansy. Bulbs: Many bulbs like to get their start in cool weather. Bulbs to plant this month include amaryllis, crinum, and the many varieties of elephant’s ear. Herbs: Continue planting herbs from seeds or plants. A wide variety of herbs like cooler, dryer weather, including cilantro, dill, fennel, parsley, sage, and thyme. Vegetables: Continue planting cool season crops such as beet, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, kale, and lettuce. What to Do Perennials: Divide and replant overgrown perennials, ornamental grasses, and bulbs now so that they establish before the coolest weather

arrives. Fungal disease: Until May, watch for brown patch and large patch, fungal diseases that cause areas of grass to turn brown. Since treatment is difficult, prevention with proper cultural practices is key. Scale on ornamental plants: Now that temperatures are lower, use dormant oil sprays to control scale insects. Irrigation: Plants need less supplemental watering in cooler weather. Turn off systems and water only if needed. Fertilization and Irrigation Needs of Florida Lawns and Landscapes Poinsettias: Watch for hornworms on poinsettias planted in the landscape. This pest can quickly defoliate a plant; handpick or treat only the area infested. Lawns: This is a great time to plant ryegrass to cover bare patches in the lawn Excerpts from University of Florida Gardening Calendar

SEWING FOR CHARITY

We are finally getting back on track after Irma delayed our expected start date. We hope to begin sewing again on the 17th of October in the Craft Room from 10:00 -12:00 on Tuesday mornings. We plan to make adult bibs and turbans for cancer patients. Anyone interested in joining us to help or if you have any suggestions for projects for our group, please call me.

INSPIRATION HOUR Tuesdays @ 10:00 AM

All welcome!

It isn’t hard to make a mountain out of a molehill. Just add a little dirt. Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.
