AppreciationWeekend 2014 CONGRATULATIONS TO GEORGE AND JANET DALY AS GRAND MARSHALS

This weekend, sponsored by Hometown America, has been in existence since 1995. The Saturday Parade with Grand Marshals, decorated golf carts, bands and costumed participants is a highlight of our season. Our community gets together to play games and have lunch each day. Tickets are given to each person for playing the games and game winners are noted. At the Saturday evening dance winners are awarded prizes and random tickets are also drawn from those earned playing games and those volunteering their time to run the games. Mark the date and join us for the fun Friday, February 28th and Saturday, March 1st Carolyn Glandorf We were very surprised and happy to receive Irene Dorr’s call early in the fall that we were chosen by the Appreciation Day Committee to be the Grand Marshals for the 2014 parade. The hard part was keeping it a secret until they were ready to announce it to the community at the December Homeowner’s Association meeting. I guess we were surprised because we have only been in residence at Tara Woods for ten years. Other Grand Marshals have been here much longer than that. We chose to become involved in the life of the community even before we came to live here full time. Our good friends, Mary Ellen and Jon Gold, volunteered us (with our permission) to run the St. Patrick’s Day party in March and we only arrived here the December before. The rest is history, as the good people of Tara Woods stepped up to help us. Many of them are still on that committee as we prepare for our 11th year hosting in 2014. That was only the beginning

a larger expense, evolved. It was a natural sequence of events that w stepped into the role of Kitchen we C Committee Chairpersons when that n need arose. Again, people stepped up to form that committee and the j of hosting Saturday Coffee was job s spread among a larger group of p people. George’s line of work in New York was computer programm ming. He’s found his skills in that a area to be in demand in the comm munity and has done some problem s solving on occasion.

of our involvement. We joined the bowling league and got to know many more people. As positions opened up in our area of interest and knowledge, we gladly volunteered. It’s just what we do.

We were very surprised and happy to receive Irene Dorr’s call early in the fall that we were chosen by the Appreciation Day Committee to be the Grand Marshals for the 2014 parade.

When we were up north, George’s love of cooking led us to do some catering for family and friends, the church and the yacht club we belonged to on Long Island, NY. We never did it to earn money, just for the fun and experience. When he saw the opportunity here to get people involved, and met other cooks with a similar interest, providing the food ourselves for Tara Woods events instead of bringing in a caterer at

Janet’s organizing skills prov vide the backbone for most of the w work we do. She finds most of the j jobs we tackle to be manageable if the work involved is organized a spread among willing helpers. and S credits her 19 years working She f First Presbyterian Church of for Port Jefferson as the venue where s gained the experience, confishe d dence and skill for organization and w working with people. Starting as Youth Director, then Director of Christian Education and finally splitting the job of church Secretary with DCE, provided the ground work for her learning experience. The confidence she has gained as a member of the TWHA Board is directly related to the dedicated people that have served with her over the years, and the valued support of the community.

One of these days we may actually retire. Right now, we’re happy and fulfilled with the diverse activities we enjoy doing in the community. It is an honor to be chosen as Grand Marshals and we are delighted to be included in the list of recognized residents that have had this privilege before us.

I hope you enjoyed the first issue of the “new” Columns. The feedback from the January issue is mostly positive and encouraging. There are still some small glitches to iron out, but you should see some of those improvements in this issue. The publisher told us it would take a few months to get it right and produce a paper that showcases the best of our community in the most readable format; so please bear with us. We really do listen to your comments and suggestions and welcome your contributions. I can now write this article as the “President” and not President “Pro Tem”. Thank you to everyone for your vote of confidence in my continuing as the President of the Homeowner’s Association. I look forward to continuing to work with the current members and I welcome the new members to the Board, Frank and Ann Millette. Frank has served as Vice President before, so he knows what his duties entail. He was an excellent VP when I served on the Board as Recording Secretary, some years ago. I am delighted to have Ann Millette join the Board. She retired from a nine-to-five job and jumped right in to serve the community. I’m sure she will

serve with insight and enthusiasm. We are very pleased that Bill Nothnagel agreed to run for another term. His work on the Board is important and he serves diligently. We say goodbye to Roger Rafferty as Vice President and Gib Loesel as a Director. It was a pleasure serving with them. We thank them for their time and energy, and wisdom and expertise in the issues that came before the Board. Bud Snell does a great job as our representative to FMO. He keeps us informed and does his homework to make it as easy as possible to support FMO and the bills that are in the Florida Senate and House that are of benefit to us as homeowners of manufactured homes here in Florida. Please take a few minutes to e-mail the senator and representative that Bud told us about at the meeting to support these important bills. The information is on the bulletin board in the clubhouse, or give Bud a call. I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome the new Tara Woods softball team “The Magic” to the array of sports in our community. They are totally new to the 50+ Softball League comprised of teams from our neighboring commu-

nities here in North Ft. Myers. I encourage you to come out and root them on as they come up against established teams that have been playing for years. They play on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 5:30 in the softball complex off Florida Rd. in Punta Gorda. Under “Good News/Bad News”, our Treasurer informed us that the copy machine use is costing us more than we take in. Director, Bill Nothnagel informed us that the copy machine in the library has served its time and needs to be replaced; therefore, the good news is that we are getting a new copier for the library. The bad news is that the cost of copies is now 10¢ each for all copies made on the library machine and on the big copier in the office. This minor increase of 5¢ will help to some extent to defray our costs and keep these services available to you. I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting of the Association on Monday, February 10th at 7:00 PM. I leave you with these words of wisdom: “You’ll find that the big potatoes are on the top of the pile because there are a lot of little ones holding them up.”

ASSUMPTIONS

Can Be Dangerous to Investors Every day of our lives, we make assumptions. We assume that the people we encounter regularly will behave in the manner to which we are accustomed. We assume that if we take care of our cars, they will get us to where we want to go. In fact, we need to make assumptions to bring order to our world. But in some parts of our life โ such as investing โ assumptions can prove dangerous. Of course, not all investment-related assumptions are bad. But here are a few that, at the least, may prove to be counter-productive: t i3FBM FTUBUF XJMM BMXBZT JODSFBTF JO WBMVF w 6Q VOUJM UIF รถOBODJBM DSJTJT XIJDI XBT DBVTFE BU MFBTU QBSUJBMMZ CZ UIF iIPVTJOH CVCCMF w NPTU QFPQMF would probably have said that real estate is always a good investment. Thank you Tara Woods residents for this year’s support and contributions to the 2013 Day Of Caring Annual Fund Drive. The four communities participating in this drive were Tara Woods, Lake Fairways, Pine Lakes, and Heritage. This year’s total contributions amounted to $17,200. Tara Woods donations were $2,880. As a result, each of the selected charities received $4,300 to continue their work in feeding the local families in need during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The

selected charities were Salvation Army, Fort Myers Soup Kitchen, Hispanic Services of Catholic Charities, and Fort Myers Rescue Mission. This is our twenty-first year running Day Of Caring and since that time $429,00 was raised which allowed our charities to serve 143,00 meals. Thanks again Tara Woods residents for your continuous support and generosity during these past years. Happy New Year to all! John and Irene D’Amico

sell your home now, you may some day, and you may not be in a position to say “NO” for an answer. Unfortunately, a park owner may adjust the buyers rent to the point where the sale falls through…. currently there is nothing to prevent this. SB 114 and HB 29 will help prevent this hardship. The bills require a cap on the amount the park owner may increase the rent when your buyer signs his own lot rental agreement during the sale. The increase for your buyer would be limited to the 12-month percentage change in the Consumer Price Index for the previous calendar year. After the first increase, your homes prospectus provisions will control future rents. Over the years FMO PEOPLE POWER has been very effective in the Legislature… helping to both kill and pass Bills! We must create an im-

mediate campaign of letters and emails to urge support for SB 114 and HB 29. It is important that these Committee Chairpersons hear directly from you now with a letter or email. Please use the information above to state your position. All TW homeowners need to respond, not just FMO members. Rep. Please support SB 114 & HB 29. Both bills are currently in the first committees in the Florida State House and Senate. THEY NEED TO MOVE FORWARD! Give committee Chairperson Senator Kelli Stargel, SB114 and Committee Chairperson Representative Debbie Mayfield, HB 29 the support necessary to start approval in their Committees. They need to hear from YOU that this is important to you as both a manufactured home owner and as a voter. Increasingly prospective manufactured home buyers are walking away from a sale when they discover what the increased lot rent will be when the existing lot lease expires. Thank you to my great committee for all of the help this holiday season. Once again you made the season bright! Now to get a little bit serious, for the residents of Tara who do not attend any of the activities sponsored parties, here is what else Activities does. We pay for the free popcorn for movie night, helium for your party balloons, we purchased all of the new decorations for the clubhouse, we also pay any added expenses for memorial services held at the clubhouse and a Bon Voyage party for anyone who attends two Activity- sponsored parties. That is why you need to support the clubs that run these parties.

while temperatures are cool. What to do Lawns: Fertilize lawns this month. Choose one (not a weed & feed) with no or very little phosphorus unless a soil test indicates the need for it. A fertilizer with controlled release nitrogen will give longer lasting results. Prune Roses: Roses should be pruned this month to reduce and improve the overall form. After pruning, fertilize and apply a fresh layer of mulch. Blooming will begin eight to nine weeks after pruning. Fertilize Shrubs and Palms: Spread fertilizer evenly over the

soil surface and water in. Follow with a fresh layer of mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Hold off pruning cold-damaged branches until new growth starts. Lawn Weeds: Apply a preemergent weed killer (not a weed and feed) to lawns this month to prevent germination of warm season weed seeds. Apply when temperatures rise to 65°F for 4-5 days. Timing is important for good control. Spray: When avocados and mango have lost 2/3 of blossoms, spray copper fungicide to control anthracnose.

Fruits: If not done in January, fertilize fruit trees including citrus now.

GARDEN CLUB As a reminder our next meeting is Saturday, February 8th at 9:00 AM. This years’ Trash and Treasure is Saturday, March 15th. Time to start setting aside items you no longer need or want. Please, no broken or dirty items, they should be items in a condition that YOU would buy. Remember that the garden club depends on the proceeds of this sale to continue to sponsor the Fashion Show as a free event. February Florida Gardening Calendar What to plant Bedding Plants: Good per-

formers in South Florida’s mild winter include impatiens, verbena, dianthus, strawflower, and lobelia. Bulbs: Many bulbs can be planted now. Divide large crowded clumps. Provide adequate water to establish. Some to try are Amazon lily, crinum, and agapanthus. Ground Covers: Consider replacing areas of grass with drought tolerant, low maintenance ground covers. Vegetables: Begin planting warm season crops this month. Sweet potato, cantaloupe, eggplant and squash can be started

ENTERTAINING NEWS In 2002, The Entertainers presented a melodrama entitled, “The Face on the Barroom Floor.” It was fun to rehearse and fun to perform. Ever since, the cast (well, all right, only one) has been asking to do it again. So here we are, a dozen years later prepared to do it again. We have a cast of 17 or 18. It’s hard to tell, we have yet to have a rehearsal with everyone there. New to the repertoire of players is Norm Libby as our “honky-tonk” piano player/sound effects man. Last time around it

was Betty Shields. Her daughter, Carol carries on the show biz tradition. In addition to her stage duties, she has become the newest member of our cast playing Marigold. We are delighted to have Tessa Berg making her comeback, after a ten year hiatus. She will play the director. We have, of course, the usual characters. Polly Brown playing a cockney maid (or is she Scottish?) Barry Maberry is reprising his roll as the hero and Ron Andrews is still the villain. No need to tamper with that. John D’Amico is the spoonerific, bumbling father who mixes up his words, syllables and letters. Going from supporting cast to leading lady is Barbara Lenhart, playing the ingénue. Other thespians are Jon Gold who will go from a stage hand playing an actor to an actor playing a stage hand. Pat Sparany is resurrecting her loud clothes from “Carol Burnett” to play the scrubwoman. Irene D’Amico has morphed from a bird to a dog. (She’ll soon be her own zoo.) Prompter, Joyce Elsbury will venture on stage in the roll of the

prompter. (Works for me!) Cameo rolls are played by Janet Daly, George Daly, Lou Dunning, Miriam Norris, Mary Ellen Gold and we welcome another newcomer, Dottie St. James. All in all, our cast members of 17 or 18, are well seasoned. In doing a little figuring, I discovered the average age of our cast is 71.06 years. So, as you can see our thespians have a lot of experience to fall back on. Whether you are new to the community and have never seen any of our shows, or someone who has seen them all since “So Nice Not to See You,” bring your friends, neighbors and family and come watch our overbaked “hams” overemote in the “Scheme of the Driftless Shifter” and other “Spoonerisms” on March 7th & 8th, 2014 at 7:00 PM. Tickets go on sale starting February 4th at Bingo, Saturday coffee and Homeowners meeting. You can cheer the villain and hiss the hero. We did say that it was all about spoonerisms, didn’t we? TREASURES OF TARA

1/15

Beth, a sophomore at Fenger High School in Chicago, IL, fell in love with a senior, Ken Ferris. That love grew and developed into a beautiful love story. They were married in 1955, right after Beth graduated HS, and 58 years later their love is still strong and deep. Together the Ferris’ focused on Family, Faith and Friends. They are so proud of their 3 children, Valerie, Steven and Greg, their 6 grandchildren, and 1 (and 1 on the way) great grandchildren. All their family have long term marriages, are well educated, are all very successful, and are active in their churches. In fact, one granddaughter is married to a Lutheran Minister and they are pastoring their first church. Beth was a stay at home Mom and after the children were raised she went to Community College, worked in the School System as an aide to Special Ed and then as a School Librarian. She eventu-

ally became the acting Librarian in a K to 12 school. After she retired she worked part time in the Huntley Public Library. If you know Beth, you know she has a deep spirituality and has been very active in her Churches. She is past president of the United Methodist Women, as well as holding many other offices. Presently she is an active, vibrant member of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. Beth continues to be very active, belonging to the following groups: bridge, book clubs, Inspirations, yoga, bowling as well as the garden club, and Red Hats. Her goodness and thoughtfulness are evident in all she does. Ken is our All American Gentleman, who loves the outdoors. After high school he was apprenticed in construction and rose to be Vice President and General Superintendent of a Construction Company in Chicago. His company was involved in build-

ing the Sears Tower and many hospitals and office buildings in Chicago. Ken loves to hunt, fish, sing, boat, play tennis and make us laugh, and he is a monthly cook at our Pancake breakfast. For 29 years they lived in Dolton, IL .and then Huntley, IL. They are presently Snow Birds and live in Baileys Harbor, Door County, WI. Yearly Ken, his son and grandson go to Canada to fish together. They once owned 20 acres of land in Missouri where they were going to build and retire, but fortunately for us they found Tara Woods, thanks to Ray and Nancy Kalebau. They also have traveled extensively all over the US and have gone four times to Europe. Beth and Ken’s life has been blessed because they are a blessing to others. Ken’s overflowing gift of humor and goodness, special. However, their great combined with Beth’s gentleness grandchild got it right when he and kindness make them very named them Gigi and Goofy!!! Sports around Tara Woods “TARA WOODS MAGIC” SOFTBALL TEAM The Magic of Tara Woods has a secondary meaning these days. The New Year also brought a new softball team at Tara Woods into being. Their first game of the season was on Monday, January 6th, with the Mark and Mary Ford League of Punta Gorda, at the Diamonds Field, beginning at 5:30 PM. A nice opening ceremony was led by the Heritage Honor Guard, a parade of teams and introduction of the Managers, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, an Invocation by a Minister and our own George Daly singing the Star Spangled Banner. Mary Ford, founder of the League, threw out the first pitch to Bill Nothnagel. Manager of our team is George Sullivan and Scorekeep-

er is John D’Amico. Assisting the Manager in getting players for the team were Jim Brown, George Daly, Bill Nothnagel and Roger Rafferty. Team members are Steve Bittenger, Jim Brown, Don Buechner, Mike Burk, George Daly, Jim Dalhofer, Warren Engel, Bob Evans, Jon Gold, Ray Leclair, Wyatt Longacre, Bill Nothnagel, Joe Parise, Robert Polenska, Roger Rafferty, Bernie Sciarpelletti and Jennell Wissler. Even though they lost their first game to the Buccaneer Pirates, their spirits and sportsmanship were high. The team did a great job and was cheered on by a large group of frozen, blanket laden cheerleaders who came out in full force to support the “Magic.” (The miracle was

they stayed to watch the game in the blustery, cold night.) Our second game was on Wednesday, January 8 against Heritage. We were in the loss column again, but the experience we are gaining is invaluable and the team spirit is high in anticipation of our first win. In addition to Tara Woods and Buccaneer the other teams are from Lake Fairways, Del Tura, Heritage, Pine Lakes, Old Bridge and Herons Glen. Games are played Mondays and Wednesdays in Punta Gorda and begin at 5:30 PM. Everyone is welcome to attend the games and

come out to support our team. If you need directions, please call George Sullivan, 731-9200. The Tara Woods Magic Softball Team is looking forward to a great season of softball and camaraderie. Mary Nothnagel, Barbara Sciarpelletti & Jackie Sullivan contributed to this article.

TENNIS LESSONS Beginner tennis players who want to learn the basics and anyone wishing to improve their tennis game are invited to come out to the tennis courts on Mondays at 12:00 Noon. Instructors are Don Boehlke, Warren Engel, Glen Fisher, and Fred Puhlfuerst. MIXED DOUBLES FRIDAY LEAGUE Thanks to the effort of Dick Heffron, a new Mixed Doubles League started on Friday, January 10th. Eight men and eight women will be playing Mixed Doubles Tennis every Friday at 9:00 AM for the next ten weeks – except for February 28th which is Appreciation Weekend. For this league we did not choose our own partner; instead, we will be playing with a different partner each week. This should make for some good tennis. TENNIS LEAGUES Due to the Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays, there was

not much to report on the Tennis Leagues. WOMEN’S LEAGUE The Tara Woods Lady Bugs played the Pine Lakes Dolphins on Thursday, January 9th. Our Lady Bugs won 4 sets and lost 2. The Tara Woods Angels had a bye that day. The first half of the season ended with the matches played on Thursday, January 16th. Because of the deadline for submitting our news for this February Columns, we were unable to report the first half standings. MEN’S LEAGUE Red League The tennis courts were too wet from the morning rain on Wednesday, January 8th, so the Tara Woods Stallions did not play their match against Pine Lakes. That match has been rescheduled. White League The Mustangs are now in fourth place in a nine team division, winning 3 out of 6 sets against Pine Lakes on January 7th

TENNIS NEWS TENNIS ASSOCIATION The Tennis Association will hold their next meeting on Sunday, February 23rd, at 5:45 PM. To be discussed and voted on at that meeting will be possible changes to the Tennis Association By-Laws. If you have any suggestions for changes, you can talk with any of the Committee Members – George Daly, Warren Engel, Glen Fisher, or Fred Puhlfuerst. At the Tennis Association meeting scheduled for Sunday, March 30th, there will be an election of officers for the 2014 season, so be sure to attend that meeting to cast your vote for the person you feel would make a good member of the Board. All four positions on the Board are open – President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. In order for you to vote at any Tennis Association Meeting, you need to be a member in good standing, which means you need to have paid your dues for that year. Our

Treasurer will be collecting dues at the monthly meetings. Dues are presently $1.00 per person. BALL MACHINE New tennis balls have now been put into the ball machine. There is a notice on the Tennis Bulletin Board regarding this. If you get a chance to use the ball machine, please let Nancy Schoeppner know how you like the new balls. ROUND ROBIN The next tennis Round Robin is scheduled for Sunday, February 23rd. The sign-up sheet will be posted on the tennis bulletin board in early February, so be sure to sign up to play. We are looking for someone to host the dinner for that February 23rd Round Robin and also for the Round Robin on March 30th. The monthly Tennis Association Meeting will be held, as usual, at 5:45 PM on February 23. Future Round Robins are scheduled for March 30th and April 27th .

Shuffleboard Notes As of this writing, the Tara Woods Shuffleboard Travel Team is in 1st place in their league. There are 8 teams making up this league and Tara Woods is leading by 10 games, thanks to the leadership of captain Bob Prenoveau. Each team plays the other 7 teams twice, once at home and once at their park. Good luck Tara Woods for the rest of the season Ken Clark The second half of the season is starting and there will be some exciting matches, as we will be playing some of the top rated teams. Come join us on Tuesdays at 1:30 PM and watch your neighbors play. Check the Tennis Bulletin Board for our home games. Blue League The Tigers played on Thursday, January 2nd, against one of the two teams from Lake Fairways. Our Tigers won 3 sets and lost 3. On January 9th the Tigers played against the other Lake Fairways team and won 2 sets and lost 4, one of them in a tie-breaker. The Eagles did not play on January 2nd, but they did play on Thursday, January 9th, against the team from Six Lakes. Our Eagles won 2 sets, lost 2 sets, and forfeited the other 2 sets. We socialize with different ladies while enjoying lunch out. It’s a great way to make new friends. One lady selects a restaurant each month and makes the reservations and the sign- up sheet. If you have a restaurant you like, you can do the reservation one month. This makes it easy and no one is responsible for more than one month. We meet at the clubhouse and carpool to restaurants in Fort Myers, Punta Gorda or Cape Coral. If you are interested, you may phone the lady who is doing the current

month and ask questions if you are not familiar with a restaurant. Of course, the ladies who have a birthday each month will receive a birthday card. ALL LADIES ARE WELCOME! Hope to see you at lunch. Anne Matthias 543-6322

Tara Woods Computer Club The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes each Thursday at 10:30 AM in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. These lessons are open to all residents and visitors. We discuss Computer Basics on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month, and cover Advanced Topics on the other weeks. The new year is going good. We reviewed the Basic topics that were covered last year, including Programs, Files, and Folders. We also started to discuss the Win-

dows Wordpad word processor. This program is included with every version of Windows, and is a great way to learn how to write your own text documents. In February, we will continue the Basics with Wordpad, and the Windows Paint graphics program that allows you to draw or edit pictures and diagrams, or to create your own original digital art. Other grahics programs like Photo Shop and Auto CAD will also be described. We finished the four-part series

Working With Photos, and talked about Windows 8.1, the first major update to the not-so-popular Windows 8 operating system that comes installed on most new personal computers. The more advanced topics we plan to cover in February include Ebooks and Readers, such as Kindle, Nook, and a new inexpensive program from Halo TTS that lets you read ebooks on your laptop or Windows tablet, as well as how to download ebooks from the Internet or the Public Library. We will also discuss how to change the format of an ebook to match your particular device. This has become one of the fastest-growing areas of interest. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, so the scheduling of these lessons is tentative. The next topic that will be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only

those classes that appeal to you. Most of them stand on their own and do not require that you attend the earlier ones. Each lesson is scheduled to last about an hour, but tends to run overtime with general questions from the members. You can ask me any question at all and I will try to answer it. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. Our membership has been increasing from week to week. Bring your laptop computer with you if you want to follow along (this is optional). Bring something to take notes with. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I can help you with any of your computer needs. I’m looking forward to seeing you. Dave St.Laurent, The Computer Tutor
