ARE YOU READY FOR THE 2104 HURRICANE SEASON? •

Have you visited our TWHA website at www.twha.us to find updated information on what you need to do now and what you need to do in the event of an impending hurricane? On the website home page look for a green bar on the right of the screen labeled “CERT Information”. Click it and you will find other informative literature that you should read and understand to be prepared.

Do you have medical needs that require special attention? If you have special medical needs, you need to apply for the Lee County Special Needs Program to take advantage of the shelter and medical services they offer in the event of an impending hurricane. You must apply now because they cannot accept applications when Lee County is within the “5-day forecast cone” of an approaching hurricane.

Once registered, you will be good for the entire year. You will find the application for this on our website or you can fill one out and submit it online at the following website: https://www.leeoc.com/shelter evacuation/Pages/application_en.aspx

certified to resist damaging winds from category 3 hurricanes, it is suggested that a prediction of anything beyond a category 2 hurricane should be your signal to seek shelter out of the predicted path of the storm. The direction you should travel will be reported on the local news station.

Hometown America and the CERT team cannot accept liability for using the clubhouse as a safe haven.

You will receive confirmation that you have been registered along with the location of the local shelter to which you’ve been assigned. Once registered, you are not under any obligation to use this service but it will be there if you need it. If you have any medical questions regarding this, call our CERT medical coordinator Lorraine Milligan at 560-7931.

Are you aware of the procedures involving the use of the Tara Woods Clubhouse as a safe haven from a storm?

In the event of a hurricane that is predicted to affect our area, our CERT team will go into action. As the storm approaches the procedures laid out in the “Tara Woods’ Hurricane Preparation Plan” will be executed. They will track the storm and provide updates on our preparation via our community TV channel (195). If deemed necessary by the CERT team, the Clubhouse will be prepared to house our residents should they wish to seek shelter from the storm. You should not be in a manufactured home during a hurricane. Although the Clubhouse has been

Pets will not be allowed in the Clubhouse. The only exception will be a dog used as a “Service Animal”. Please read the pet guidelines in the “Hurricane Preparation Plan” on the website. If you can’t reach the person listed in the phone book for details, give me a call. I can probably link you up with someone here who would be able to supply information. There’s a lot to do during the summer in Tara Woods besides curling up in front of your air conditioner with a good book.

This is also the season when many of us take vacations for a week or so. Don’t forget to hurricane proof your home and property, even if you’re only gone for a short while. We all know how unpredictable Florida weather can be in the summer. Safe travels and stay cool!

We gratefully welcome the new editor of The Columns, Barbara Roland. Barbara willingly agreed to take over, with Donna Phillip’s retiring at the completion of this issue. Donna has done a great job and has passed on her vast knowledge of newsletter editing to make the transition a little easier. Thank you, Donna.

Thanks to our CERT team, we received our official certificate designating us as a “Firewise” community. If you missed the presentation at the April 5th Saturday Coffee, Frank Millette will be glad to fill you in on the program and explain exactly what that means. It’s another reason to be glad you’re living in beautiful, safe, Tara Woods.

The President is enjoying a much needed vacation, although there is plenty to do around the community to keep busy. The Memorial Day celebration, hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Club, was a fitting tribute to our veterans, with good food and the good company of 160 people, a great turnout for this event. The Kentucky Derby party was a lot of fun with a follow-up event on June 7th to watch The Belmont Stakes to cheer on California Chrome to win the coveted Triple Crown.

The next party is July 4th which is being hosted by the TWHA Board of Directors and friends.

An old fashioned Fourth of July picnic is planned with picnic food and games in and around the pool. Tickets are on sale through June 28th for $10/person. The poster in the Clubhouse has all the details. I hope you’ll be there.

The CERT/Hurricane Preparation Team has met and is ready for another hurricane season, which we hope will be a “non-season”.

Watch for Different Risk Levels of “Muni” Bonds Are you thinking of investing in municipal bonds? If so, you may have good reason, particularly if you are in one of the higher tax brackets. After all, municipal bond interest payments typically are exempt from federal income taxes, and possibly state and local income taxes, too — although some “munis” are subject to the alternative minimum tax. However, since not all municipal bonds are the same, you’ll want to know the differences — especially in terms of risk.

Municipal bonds, like corporate bonds, essentially face two types of risk: interest rate risk and default risk. Interest rate risk becomes clear when market interest rates rise, causing the value of your existing municipal bonds to fall. No one will pay you full price for your bonds when newly issued bonds carry a higher rate — so if you plan on selling bonds before they mature, you risk losing principal. You can largely ignore this type of risk simply by holding your bonds until maturity, at which point you will receive the face value back, provided the issuer doesn’t default.

And that brings us to the second type of risk: default risk. Historically, municipal bond default rates have been much lower than those of corporate bonds, particularly lower-quality bonds. But different types of municipal bonds carry different levels of default risk. Here’s a quick look at the two main categories of municipals and their risk characteristics: General obligation bonds — General obligation bonds generally finance projects of a municipality. A general obligation bond issuer is required to do everything in its power, including raising new taxes, to ensure that interest payments are paid on time and in full. This requirement helps support the creditworthiness of general obligation bonds.

Revenue bonds — Revenue bonds, which finance schools, hospitals, utilities, airports, affordable housing and other public works, are paid by dedicated streams of revenue. For example, revenues generated by the sewer system pay the interest on a sewer system revenue bond. Because revenue bonds have more restricted revenue streams than general obligation bonds, they are generally viewed to be riskier. To compensate for the added risk, revenue bonds usually pay a higher rate of interest than general obligation bonds. When studying the risk factors of revenue bonds, you also have to consider the type of revenue bond involved. For example, some sectors, such as housing and health care, may be more volatile, as are some industrial revenue bonds.

(These bonds, which are generally used to support a specific project, such as a new manufacturing facility, are sponsored by a government entity — but the proceeds go to a private, for-profit business.)

Of course, when evaluating the risk potential of municipal bonds, you don’t have to rely on guesswork. The major bond rating agencies — Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s and Fitch — review municipal bonds to determine their creditworthiness. There are no guarantees, but by sticking with the bonds that are “investment grade,” you can help reduce the risk of owning a bond that goes into default.

Municipal bonds can be valuable additions to your portfolio. Besides providing income that’s free of federal taxes, these bonds offer you a chance to help support valuable projects in your community. But, as we’ve seen, different “munis” have different risk factors — so make sure you know exactly what type of bond you’re purchasing before you write the check.

With the holidays upon us, I would like to share a personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving. This is a first for me, as I normally don’t preach to others.

As you may know, some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a “social session” out with friends.

Well, two days ago I was out for an evening with friends and had several cocktails followed by some rather nice red wine. Feeling jolly, I still had the sense to know that I may be slightly over the limit.

That’s when I did something that I’ve never done before - I took a cab home.

Sure enough, on the way home there was a police road block, but since it was a cab, they waved it past and I arrived home safely without incident.

This was a real surprise as I had never driven a cab before. I don’t know where I got it, and now that it’s in my garage, I don’t know what to do with it.

The menu is one which will satisfy any seafood lover as well as any landlubber. There are lobster rolls, fried oyster rolls, broiled seafood combo with stuffing, oysters on the half shell, seafood gumbo, lobster bisque, to name just a few items available.

All of the food was served hot, which is something we expect from our restaurant experience...but, unfortunately, at times we do not get.

The Fries (Chips) were not the typical McDonald-size fries, rather, a nice, almost steakhouse size. We spent some time talking about Rhode Island with our waitress, who was also from Rhode Island and was well acquainted with some of the places we mentioned. She has been employed with the Clam Bake for nine years, which says something for the way the owners treat their staff.

Each Wednesday there is a Rhode Island Chowdah served, which is clam broth and clams and onions and potatoes...They also have Saugy Dogs, which are hot dogs made in New England and a favorite of ours. We ate so well we did not have room for dessert.

But, there was Boston Cream Pie, Key Lime Pie as well as several other offerings on the menu.

The House specialty is a CLAM BAKE, which includes a Maine lobster, mussels, cup of clam chowder, corn on the cob, New England Steamers, a generous portion of Atlantic Cod fish, a piece of hot sausage, russet potatoes, carrots, celery and onions steamed to perfection in layers of North Atlantic seaweed, served with garlic bread, which I tasted and loved! The Clam Bake is priced at $49.95.

As mentioned, the owners, Mark and Laurie Thomas moved to Fort Myers, from West Warwick, Rhode Island some ten years ago. They have obviously got the “restaurant business” down pat and run a wonderful operation. Mark is a graduate of Johnson and Wales, which our own Anthony, from the Del Tura Pub, graduated. Mark has been in the restaurant business 30 years.

The restaurant is The Clam Bake. Located in south Fort Myers, right on route 41. My wife and I spend our summers in Rhode Island. We love seafood and, in particular, New England fare. The Clam Bake is owned and operated by a couple from West Warwick, Rhode Island. Our summer cottage is in Warwick.

The Clam Bake is located at 16520 South Tamiami Trail, Suite #152, Fort Myers, Florida 33908. They are prepared to take reservations for parties for as many as 70 people.

Immediately, upon entering the Clam Bake, we noticed the decor was based on various New England landmarks and icons; Boston Red Sox banners on the walls, New England Patriots logos, paintings of the New England shoreline. On and on....The restaurant is quite large and was not too busy on the afternoon of our visit. We were seated in a comfortable booth and immediately began looking over the menu. Our waitress was at the table without hesitation and asked if we were interested in a drink (they do have a full bar service and “specialty drinks” were on a card at the table.). I requested sweet tea (they did not have it during our visit but, it’s on the menu). I settled for lemonade and Margaret had club soda.

There is a “Special Lunch Menu”, which consists of several typical New England offerings, priced quite reasonably. The lunch specials are four ounces worth of entree and the dinners are eight ounces.

We each started off with New England clam “chowdah”, which was served hot and very tasty. Thick and rich, with not too many potatoes and a nice allotment of chopped clams. For our main course, Margaret had the Fish & Chips with an appetizer of Steamed Middleneck Clams. I had the Fried Ipswitch Clams (whole belly). The fried fish as well as the Ipswitch Clams are batter fried, which we both prefer, rather than breaded. The batter contains a bit of cornmeal, which adds to the flavor and the crunchiness ! The tartar sauce was a typical tartar sauce. My meal came with baby lima beans, which could have used a bit of seasoning but were cooked perfectly.

Ladies and Gentlemen….. about ½ way through summer… aahh, nice and warm just like we like the weather to be in Florida.

The pool is a great place to refresh and catch up on the local happenings. There really is nothing going on with the Entertainers, but I just cannot miss the opportunity to chat with ya’ll. I do hope everyone is enjoying their time during this summer no matter what state you are in. If your plans have you traveling during the summer, travel safe and return with loads of fun memories.

Speaking of memories, I am going to share one with all of you. Lou and I made a journey to Egypt in December of 2000.

What better place to spend Christmas than in a country with about a 1% Christian population?

Anyway, we had a wonderful trip sharing the sights, sounds and tastes of a very foreign land with people from around the globe.

During the trip we had an opportunity to ride a donkey to the top of the Valley of the Kings to see the sunrise over the valley on Christmas morning. What a splendid idea. You go to a spot near 2 colossal giant statues and get on an ‘ass’. We started in the dark about 5 AM since we wanted to be at the top at sunrise.

We were riding on a street on the way to begin the climb. In Egypt, unlike most of the world, lights on a vehicle appear to be an op-

tion which most people choose not to use, this is also interesting since it is …DARK. Well, my donkey was antisocial, with a mind of his own. He must have thought that he was a motorized vehicle because he walked in the middle of the street. Anyone who has ridden a donkey knows there is no steering wheel. We also did not have lights on me or the donkey. I knew I was in trouble when a bus was so close to me that I could feel the coolness of the outside of the bus as it passed us by. I screamed and Abdul, one of the guides, came back and proceeded to whack my donkey to get him back in line on the side of the road with the other 20 or so animals. Ok, now we were going up on the side of a rocky cliff. They failed to mention we would be traveling on a path which was about one foot wide next to about a 1,000 foot drop to the bottom of the valley floor, and remember it’s dark.

Again my burrow, the cute little thing, is already pissed at me for getting him beat once today, chooses to walk as close to the edge as he could. I was terrified, afraid to even breathe. Thank goodness it was still relativity dark so I could not see much to the right of me. Of course, except for air, there was nothing to the right of me. Again Abdul came to my rescue and walked with my precious donkey as we made our

way up the rocky cliff. Finally making it to the top I jumped off and much to the surprise of the local guides and Abdul, I hugged him for saving me twice. I had forgotten about the position of women in this country. I guess they thought I was one of “those” women from the USA. Our trip in Egypt was wonderful, and we are so glad we had the opportunity. We returned home with lots of interesting memories. This is just a heads up, for those of you going to ride a donkey in the dark use your bicycle lights and try to get a more considerate donkey to ride.

I want to remind you that I am ‘showcasing’ the hard working volunteers that help put on our shows year after year. The Entertainers thank each and every one of you for your continued support. Again I bring you another batch of “a picture is worth a thousand words”.

Kentucky Derby Party A good time was had by all on Sat., May 3rd when about 85 people enjoyed watching the 140th Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs in Kentucky on the big screen. As the pictures show, we were dressed in our Derby attire for our own Kentucky Derby Party in Tara Woods.

The food was great and the Mint Juleps were flowing. Thanks to George Daly and Ken Clark for “keeping them coming” throughout the afternoon. The two bouquets of red roses were won

by Lynn Porter and Dottie Hargrove. Congratulations, ladies, and also to our 50/50 winner.

The betting table was run, once again, by our race official, George D’Alessandro,

assisted this year by Barbara Roland and Linda McKay. Lorraine Milligan and “new guy” (He’s so new, I didn’t get his name. Sorry!) did a great job of selling the 50/50 tickets. Mary Ellen Gold made sure everyone was given a “free” ticket to win the roses. Thank you all for pitching in and helping to keep the party going.

Thanks to everyone who helped set up and take down tables and chairs before and after the party. I’ve never seen it done so quickly!

All the ladies looked great in their hats and the men very dapper. It was a tough decision, but two impartial, unnamed judges picked out two outstanding hats for the ladies and one for a man to

win prizes. The Bishops, Wanda and Carolyn won for the ladies and, Joey Murphy, nephew visiting Dawn & Bob Benjamin, won for the men. Next year you are encouraged to join in the fun and make the decision even more difficult, especially for the men.

This was a record number of people attending this year.

Belmont Stakes Get-Together A group of 30 of us gathered on Sat., June 7th, to cheer on “California Chrome” who won the Kentucky Derby and went on to win the second leg of the “Triple Crown”, the “Preakness Stakes” in Baltimore, MD. Unfortunately, he failed to win the third leg, the “Belmont Stakes” which would have given him the honor of being the first horse to win all three races since “Affirmed” did so in 1978. Our evening included

playing “Triple Crown” Jeopardy and betting on a First and Second Place win. In spite of “Chrome’s” disappointing finish, it was a good race and we had a couple of big winners. Thanks to everyone who helped set up in the morning and put away tables and chairs after the race. Maybe next year we’ll have another opportunity to cheer on a “Triple Crown” hopeful.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH New Horizons

by Mike Renzulli During my return to New Hampshire during the summer months, I volunteer my time at the local New Horizons soup kitchen. New Horizons serves three distinct charters. It operates two shelters as well as a soup kitchen and food pantry.

Shelter The shelter provides a bed for the homeless for a maximum of three nights. An individual’s stay may be limited to three (3) nights as this will allow time to take advantage of appropriate public services or make arrangements for shelter elsewhere.

Food Pantry The New Horizons Food Pantry is available for people residing in Manchester who are suffering extreme financial hardship.

The Food Pantry relies largely upon donated food items. Many churches, businesses, schools, supermarkets and individuals consistently support the pantry in this way. One of my volunteer jobs is to pick up the donated food each Monday at area supermarkets.

Soup Kitchen The soup kitchen serves breakfast for shelter guests daily. It also serves a complete dinner. The soup kitchen typically serves over 250 meals daily.

Recently, the owner of a commercial greenhouse business donated a commercial greenhouse to New Horizons. The greenhouse is located in the center of the city of Manchester on an empty lot that was donated to New Horizons. The goal was to grow and produce many of the vegetables that could be used to create the daily meals that are served to individuals.

My volunteer work included building many of the planters that will be used outside the greenhouse during the warm summer months. I have included pictures of the greenhouse and the different stages of the planter building process.

THREE LITTLE DUCKS Before leaving Tara for the summer our editor and chief Donna told me news gets a little “thin” in the summer months and to send in anything “from up north” that may be fun reading, so here goes!!

Here in Erie, Pennsylvania, Suzy and I live near the water. Presque Isle Bay on Lake Erie is about 75 feet from our front door. We have a wonderful deck that overlooks the bay which is an ever changing scene. There are 21 houses or cottages in our community; most of them are about one or two feet apart. They can only be entered from the water side; there is a dock in front which is the “only way in”.

One of the interesting things that happened on our beach last year was when

someone dropped off three pond ducks. They brought them here in a cage and told us they had been in their swimming pool. There are two males and one female.

I might also add that there are lots of wild duck that live here, mostly Mallards.

When they arrived we named them Huey, Dewy and Louise. What is interesting about these three is they are never more than a few feet apart.

We were told by one of our neighbors that they would not survive the winter. In November when we departed for Tara we put a barrel of cracked corn on the dock and the neighbors made sure they were fed. Amazingly, they survived 18 inches of ice and one of Erie’s worst winters. When we returned in April they were quacking away to greet us.

NOTHNAGEL’S NEWS FROM NEW JERSEY Mary and Bill are enjoying a busy and fun summer.

We are in the full swing of activities – softball 3 times a week and golf the other 2 days. Our beautiful beaches are slowly getting back to pre Sandy days, and we are enjoying walks on the boardwalk, summer concerts on the beach at night, and dips in the rolling surf of the Atlantic Ocean.

We have a family wedding in the Boston area in July and our biggie is a 2 week Scandinavian Cruise. ll be sailing on the We will

Celebrity’s Constellation, the same ship Tara Woods is taking in January 2015.

Our ports of call are: Amsterdam, Holland; Berlin, Germany; Stockholm, Sweden; Helsinki, Finland; St. Petersburg, Russia; Estonia; Copenhagen, Denmark; and back to Amsterdam. The trip will be from the end of August into September.

Before you know it, we will be back in TW. We miss you!!!

The ducks, geese and loons are returning to a lake still frozen over and will be for another week or so. The Whitetail Deer seem to have survived the winter in better shape than the people in this neck of the woods. All of our friends have what we call cabin fever, and can’t wait to see open water on the lake. They tell me how lucky we are to have a community like Tara Woods to

spend the winter all of the activities, and socializing. Of course we know that and are thankful we are able to do it. We will be spending the week of July 5th to the 12th with Judy and Dale Holat, Joanne and Stan Yamka, Nancy and Ray Leclair at a cabin on Leech Lake which is located about a hundred miles south of us. It will be quite a long ride for Dale and Judy, over 600 miles. We are looking forward to that week. Kathy is busy getting the Craft store ready to open, she helps run the store. It’s open during the summer and affords a place for local crafters, of which there are many, to display and sell their

items. The staff also offers info to visitors on things to see and do while spending their vacation time in the area. The opening of the fishing season is one week away and all of the resort owners are hoping that the lake is ice free by then. This is a very big deal in northern Minnesota.

All of the small towns like ours depend on fishermen, as well as hunters, to keep the economy going. With the economic downturn, many of the small loggers went out of business so now most of the people who live here depend on tourism and sportsmen and women to earn their living. The green-up has not started yet so all the trees

and shrubs are still leafless, although Kathy’s flowers like tulips, irises and some lilies are starting to show through.

I will be going to southeastern Minnesota to hunt wild turkeys with our brother-in-law Ray, who many of you know, as he and my younger sister, Nancy, bought a house in Tara Woods last year and live on Darwin Street during the winter. We will be hunting from the 11th of May thru the 15th.

This Friday there will be a Smelt fry at the town hall. This is an annual tradition in many communities in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. These are small minnow like fish

that are netted in Lake Superior and are deep fried in beer batter and are eaten whole, except for the head and entrails.

Money from this event goes to the first responders of which Kathy is a member. We will be leaving on August 11th for an Alaska adventure lasting 21 days. No long motorcycle trips are planned this year.

We are hoping to see Joe and Linda Parise the first week in August as they will be traveling to Minnesota to visit Joe’s son. They plan on traveling to our home for a few days; we are also looking forward to that.

NEW ENGLAND CLUB Hope all New Englanders are enjoying their summer!

One change for our new season the officers would like you all to know aboutthe New England/Midwest Challenge will now be held every other year, rather than yearly.

Therefore, there will be no challenge in 2015, and New England will host in 2016. The date we reserved for this party was Saturday, March 21st and we will still be having an event on this date for the club.

Reminders: Our Welcome Back Party is Saturday, October 25th, and it will be a picnic by the lake and the Clubhouse after dark. Also, the New England Club is hosting the Tara Woods Christmas Party on Saturday, December 13th. We know we can count on the support of our terrific members with this event.
