BON VOYAGE PARTY The weather was beautiful on Saturday, April 5th, for the Bon Voyage Party that was attended by 173 fun-loving people. This party was free to any Tara Woods resident who had previously attended at least two Activities-sponsored parties; that accounted for 160 of the people there – only 13 others paid for their tickets to this end-of-season party that was sponsored by Activities. Many of them gathered around the pool and others enjoyed the comfort of the air-conditioned Clubhouse. Both groups were able to enjoy the great music provided by our own Lloyd and Carolyn Kelsey. A meal of chicken and ribs was catered by Redneck Bar-B-Q of Naples. We would like to extend a big “Thank You” to Linda McKay and her committee for sponsoring this party. Linda has been on the Activities Committee for five years and has been the Chairman for the last three years Additional photos from the Bon Voyage Party will be included in the next issue.

Financial Services. Rita has 2 children, 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Her hobbies include shopping, reading and dogs. Evelyn Picklesimer is a full-time resident living at 19442 Charleston Circle, moving here from upper Florida. She is retired from Haverty’s Furniture but is presently in business as Cakes by Evelyn. Evelyn has 2 children, and 4 grandchildren, with one on the way. Her hobbies are cake baking along with other desserts.

FROM THE PRESIDENT have a lot of fun and become a congenial summer community. This issue of the Columns has an article encouraging those of you up north to send information on what you’re up to up there. We’d love to hear what you are doing with family and friends, or just how you keep yourself occupied while you’re away from Tara Woods. Send pictures, too! The July/ August issue is combined, so send stuff by June 10th. The September issue is by itself, so send info. by August 10th. We hope to hear from a lot of you. Don’t forget that you can read the Columns on-line at twha. us. At Saturday Coffee on April 5th, Frank Millette arranged for a speaker to talk about the “Firewise” program in Florida. She was very informative and gave a Powerpoint presentation on how to keep your home safe should a brush fire become a threat. We are relatively safe here with our landscaping under control. We are now a certified “Firewise” community. Thanks, Frank and the CERT team, for bringing this pro-
gram to Tara Woods. Frank reminded everyone at the Association meeting on April 7th that we are approaching hurricane season. The Hurricane Preparation Committee will be meeting in May. If you are here during the summer, the Committee can always use an extra pair of hands should the need arise to prepare the Clubhouse. Hopefully, we’ll have another calm hurricane season this year. The Board will meet in May on Thursday, May 8th, at 9:00 AM. There will be a meeting of the Association on Monday, May 12th at 7:00 PM. This will be the last meeting of the Association until October. The Board will meet during the summer on an “as-needed” basis. Stay safe and have a happy, healthy summer. I look forward to seeing you at Bingo or the pool this summer and at the October 13th meeting of the Association.

I thought March was busy. It’s been a crazy April, too. I need a vacation! I really do enjoy the calm and quiet summer down here. It’s hot and humid, but that just makes the beach more inviting, and it’s much easier to eat out at whatever time you prefer without waiting. I don’t think people realize how pretty it is here during the summer. We’re in a sub-tropic climate, which is very evident in the summer. The daily rain and thunderstorms turn the landscape into a wet, green tropical forest. Everything blooms and thrives in this climate, except maybe us. It doesn’t stop the summer golfers or tennis players, though. They’re out early and usually miss the rains, which are prevalent in the afternoon. As a summer beach-goer, you never know exactly where it’s going to rain. You know it probably will, but you hope it’s not on your beach. Tara Woods certainly doesn’t shut down. The calendar stays full and there are lots of scheduled activities to enjoy. There are also the impromptu parties that pop up at the pool and tiki bar and on the verandah. We

Saving Is Good...
But It’s Not Investing It’s a good thing to have some savings. When you put the money in a low-risk account, you can be pretty sure it will be readily available when you need it. Nonetheless, “saving” is not “investing” — and knowing the difference could pay off for you far into the future. Think about it this way: Saving is for today, while investing is for tomorrow. You need your savings to pay for your daily expenses, such as groceries, and your monthly bills — mortgage, utilities, and so on. In fact, you might even want your savings to include an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses to pay for unexpected costs, such as a new furnace or a major car repair. These are all “here and now” expenses — and you could use your savings to pay for them. But in thinking of your long-term goals, such as college for your children and a comfortable retirement for yourself, most individuals typically can’t simply rely on their savings — they’ll need to invest. Why? Because, quite simply, investments can grow — and you will need this growth potential to help achieve your objectives. To illustrate the difference between saving and investing, let’s do a quick comparison. Suppose you put $200 per month into a savings account that paid hypothetical 3% interest (which is actually higher than the rates typically being paid today). After 30 years, you would have accumulated about $106,000, assuming you were in the 25% federal tax bracket. Now, suppose you put that same $200 per month in a tax-deferred investment that hypothetically earned 7% a year. At the end of 30 years, you would end up with about $243,000. (Keep in mind that you would have to pay taxes on withdrawals. Hypotheticals do not include any transaction costs or fees.) This enormous disparity between the amounts accumulated in the two accounts clearly shows the difference between “saving” and “investing.” Still, you might be thinking that investing is risky, while savings accounts carry much less risk. And it is certainly true that investing does involve risks — investments can lose value, and there’s no guarantee that losses will be recovered. Nonetheless, if you put all your money in savings, you’re actually incurring an even bigger risk — the risk of not achieving your financial goals. In fact, a low-rate savings account might not even keep up with inflation, which means that, over time, you will lose purchasing power. Ultimately, the question isn’t whether you should save or invest — you need to do both. But you do need to decide how much of your financial resources to devote toward savings and how much toward investments. By paying close attention to your cash flow, you should be able to get a good idea of the best savings and investment mix for your particular situation. For example, if you find yourself constantly dipping into your long-term investments to pay for short-term needs, you probably don’t have enough money in savings. On the other hand, if you consistently find yourself with large sums in your savings account even after you’ve paid all your bills, you might be “sitting” on too much cash — which means you should consider moving some of this money into investments with growth potential. Saving and investing — that’s a winning combination.

The FMO is the only organization in the State of Florida that watches over the interests of the people living in manufactured homes. The Florida Mobile Home Act (Florida Statute 732) was enacted in 1984, in part to address the relationship between the Park Owner and the Homeowner. The Legislature recognized that the mobile home owners have certain basic rights, which must be protected. The Legislature also recognized that park owners have certain rights that need to be protected. Florida Statute 723 is a document that all manufactured home owners should be famil-

Would you like to meet a 96 year old Snowbird who is always positive, cheerful, and upbeat? Helen Boettger is amazing the way she still maintains two homes, lives alone and has her station wagon transported back and forth from NJ by a kind Mike Grigas. Helen retired in 1985. With her cousin, Freddy Moore, and their friend, Vito Disaro, they wanted a place to bask in the sun to get away from NJ’s cold winters. Helen, a widow since age 45, found Tara Woods in 1986. The three of them rented until 1989 when Freddy purchased the house on the corner as you come into the gate. Helen purchased her home in 1990 on Tara Lakes Circle. They joined many clubs; daily basked in the sun,
and in the summer would travel often to Padua, Italy, where Freddy and Vito had a home. As we all know, our Vito is still basking in the sun!!! Helen grew up in Plainfields (NJ), and graduated with a
For 22 years she shared an office with a young physical education teacher named Bill Nothnagel. A deep friendship developed, and Helen is the reason Bill purchased Freddy’s house in TW after Freddy died in 2004. Helen raised a wonderful family. Her daughter, Lynn, is a snowbird, too, living in The Villages and NJ. Unfortunately, her son Billy died at age 54. Helen’s grandchildren and great -grandchildren are a source of joy to her. We thank Helen for being such an inspiration to so many. Her greatness is in the little ways she positively lives her life. I, personally, thank her for finding TW for us and for her friendship.

ENTERTAINING NEWS So Ladies and Gentlemen…..May is upon us and here in sunny Florida we have another chance to enjoy the sunshine. Some of you will be leaving or already have left Florida to your get-away home, drive safe and return to us in good health. Since I was so chatty last month, I failed to say thanks to everyone who attended our production in March; (and I hope everyone enjoyed seeing it snow in Tara Woods in Florida). I hope the show was as much fun for you as it was for us putting it on. I am not sure if we enjoyed ourselves more in rehearsal or on the nights of the performance. Either way, thanks again for supporting the Entertainers. I know we have a talented bunch of people living here in Tara Woods and I bet that some of you who are not yet involved have hidden talents that would enhance our productions; think about it; we would love to include you in the productions on or off stage. Many of the people who help us do so without ever being seen. The Entertainers is a group that must transact business just like the other groups, therefore we have meetings which are normally held on the 3rd Saturday each month (except in the summer months of May, June, July, August and September) after coffee in the little living room. Our next meeting will be October 18th, 2014. This group is a real bargain since there are no dues. Stop in and see what we are about. Putting on a show is not quite like the Spanky and Our Gang which we all remember from early TV, “We have a garage and a sheet, so let’s put on a show.” Then in 10 minutes they put together a show with words and/or music. In reality it takes some effort and lots of time on the part of many people. To give you an idea of the number of people it takes to produce a show, look at the program from the last show; it has 43 people mentioned. We are familiar with the faces of the actors on stage, so in the next few months of our Columns I hope to include photos of a few of these hard working people who make the productions possible. TARA WOODS BOWLING LEAGUE The 2013/2014 bowling season ended on April 2nd. It was capped by an elegant luncheon at Bianca’s Ristorante on April 9th. There were four entrée menu choices but we know the favorite was the Tiramisu and Cannoli desserts. The top three teams were, the Mai Tais finishing first, captained by Wayne Ray. In second place were Captain George Daly and his Manhattans. The third place slot went George D’Alessandro and his team, the Woo Woo’s. Listed below are the final standings and individual achievements. The kickoff meeting for the 2014/2015 season will be held on September 12 at 7:00 pm in the clubhouse.

ACTIVITIES Well, the season is just about over and I wish the snowbirds a great summer. Stay safe and healthy. I hope everyone had a good time at the Bon voyage Party. SPORTS AROUND TARA WOODS TARA WOODS SHUFFLEBOARD TRAVEL TEAM The Tara Woods 2013/2014 travel shuffleboard team won 1st place in the North Fort Myers travel shuffleboard league. The league consists of 8 teams from various parks in NFM. League President is Don Watson and Nancy Wuebbeler is Secretary (both from Tara Woods). Bob Prenoveau is Captain of our team this year and is quick to point out it has been 17 years since Tara Woods brought home the 1st place trophy. The team as a whole credits a number of reasons why this year was our year to win. We are a small experienced group of players. We had a number of strategy practices before our season started and almost all of our players
were involved in Tuesday/Friday leagues this year. In addition, team members improved their “shot execution” by participating in a fun game called “horse collar” managed by Don Watson and Ken & Carole Clark. The game is very popular, with a large number of people playing every Monday. It could be said “The Tara Woods stars were aligned” as we all agree this shuffleboard season was a truly magical experience. Bob Prenoveau The Tuesday and Friday leagues completed their season and held a banquet on Monday, March 31st. Prizes were award to 1st, 2nd & 3rd places for both leagues. Winners were:

“TARA WOODS MAGIC” SOFTBALL TEAM The first season for Tara Woods Magic ended on Wednesday, March 26th, with another loss on the scorecard. This “initiation” season, however, was a win in all other categories! Spirits are high as well as teamwork and the fan cheering section. Injuries have leveled off and hopes for next year are high. Our Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser on March 20th was a huge success. The dinner was sold out and we enjoyed a dining room filled to capacity. George and Janet Daly coordinated the kitchen and workers who came early to prepare. Cooks were Ken Clark, John Costantini, Mike Renzulli and Dave Simonson. Plating the meal were team family members, and team members served the dinner. In attendance were four members of Tara Woods’ first softball team: Bob Benjamin, Dick Heffron, George Sullivan
and Dick Weiss. Many thanks to emcee, Roger Rafferty, to Kathy Rafferty, for being in charge of ticket sales and to Mike Burk for his great pictures of our team in action. Thanks also to Tony “Bud” Montelaro and John “Lou” D’Amico for our entertainment, with their rendition of “Who’s On First”. Still trying to get those positions straight. A special thanks to Shear Perfection (The Parise’s) and Vinnie Amarando for their donations of new bats for next season. We hope to have new uniforms for next season. We also thank Bob Polenska, our interim manager, for filling in this year. Tony Perre stepped up to the plate and answered the call to be Team Manager and Lou Dunning will be Assistant Manager for the 2015 season. Any changes to the team roster will be announced in January.
We also had a team appreciation picnic on the verandah, April 6th. Good food and a happy afternoon were enjoyed by all. Thanks to Roger & Kathy Rafferty for organizing. The team wishes to thank everyone who helped, cheered or participated as a team member, as a fan or behind the scenes. Many thanks to Aaron Homrighouse for all your help in the dugout. And, last but not least, thanks to all the fans who came out and supported Tara Woods Magic this year. Thanks to you, we have the reputation for the biggest cheering section in the League. TENNIS NEWS TENNIS ASSOCIATION MEETING There were approximately 40 people at the Tennis Association Meeting that was held on March 30th. At that meeting an election of officers was held for the 2014-2015 tennis season. All four positions on the Board were filled as follows: Nancy Schoeppner was elected President; she had been the Treasurer and the President Pro-tem. Fred Puhlfuerst was newly elected to be VicePresident. Kathy Rafferty was re-elected as Secretary, and Carole Neveu was elected as the new Treasurer. We thank Nancy, Fred, Kathy, and Carole for their willingness to serve on the Board. There will not be a Tennis Association Meeting in April. The next Tennis Association Meeting will be held on November 23rd, 2014. ROUND ROBIN A group of 39 people enjoyed Jambalaya after the tennis Round Robin that was held on Sunday, March 30th. Earlier that day 16 people played tennis on another beautiful, sunny day on the Tara Woods tennis courts here in Southwest Florida. The tennis Round Robin dinner was hosted by Bob & Debbie Polenska, with help from Roger & Kathy Rafferty. There will not be a tennis Round Robin in April. The next Round Robin is scheduled for November 23rd, 2014. We need someone to host the dinner at that Round Robin. If you are willing to volunteer to arrange that dinner, please contact Nancy Schoeppner. TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE The Women’s tennis season ended on March 20th. The Lady Bugs, captained by Henri La Liberty, took 3rd place in the league that consisted of nine teams. The Angels, with Sharon Boehlke as their captain, took 5th place. The following Thursday, the women enjoyed an end-of-season round robin and luncheon, both held at Herons Glen. The Lady Bugs were recognized at that luncheon for their 3rd place position. For next fall’s tennis season, 18 women signed up to be on the two Tara Woods women’s teams. The women then held a meeting on March 18th to select members for the new teams for next season, which should start in early November. The Tara Woods Angels will again be captained by Sharon Boe-
hlke. A new team name – the Tara Woods Jewels – was selected for the team to be led by newly-elected Captain, Julie Wehrung. Team members who were selected to play on the two teams are listed on the Tennis Bulletin Board. MEN’S LEAGUE Red League I would like to take this time to let the people of Tara Woods know that, unlike last year, the Red Team did not finish in first place this year. Even though we did not do as well this year, our team was dedicated and determined, and we enjoyed the competition with the other clubs, which was our priority. To finish off our last home game with a bang, we invited the opposing team players and their wives from Pine Lakes to join our team players and our wives to the verandah for an assortment of food and other goodies!!!! There were close to 40 people enjoying the close friendship we have developed. (I think they came for the food. Ha Ha) Next year is another year, our spirit is high, and we expect to do great things (not necessarily in tennis). We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many supporters who came to our games at home and away. It meant a lot to us to see you there encouraging us week in and week out; so, thank you very much!!! Until next season, please stay healthy and enjoy life to the maximum. – Glen Fisher White League The White League tennis season is now over and we are pleased to have achieved 4th place out of nine teams. We had a good season playing together, with lots of laughs and a few tears. We thank our fans and hope that you continue to support the players. See you next season. – Gerry Gagnon Blue League – The Tigers The Tara Woods Tigers played their final match against Herons Glen on March 27th. That match ended with 2 wins and 4 losses, and put the Tigers in 7th place out of 8 teams. Blue League – The Bald Eagles The tennis season for the Tara Woods Eagles ended on March 27th in the rain. We won 3 sets and lost 3 against the Pine Lakes Gators, and we ended up in 4th place.
Next year we will only field one team because of low player turnout early in the season and because of so many other unpredictable events like the cruise, health issues, visiting family, etc. The final team roster will not be turned in until early October 2014. – Bill Powers Blue League – Next Season The Blue League Tennis Team from Tara Woods will enter the 20142015 North Fort Myers Senior Men’s Tennis League season next fall with a consolidated single team named the Tara Woods Tigers, chosen during the annual league tennis meeting on March 9th. The team will play a series of matches against senior teams from other area communities starting in November of 2014. The Tigers will be captained by George D’Alessandro and co-captained by Bill Powers, who each led their respective teams through the just concluded 2013-2014 tennis season. Members of the Tigers, in addition to D’Alessandro and Powers, are Ray Flynn, Rich Letourneau, Phil Franchini, Dale Holat, and Chuck Wheeler. Substitute players for the team are Rich Binkowski, Mike Renzulli, Barry Maberry, Ron Andrews, Ken Ferris, Dakota Windancer, Howie Gross, and Bob Polenska. The team members would like to thank all their friends and neighbors who came out to watch and support them at their matches this year, and are looking forward to a winning season when play resumes in the fall. – Phil Franchini TENNIS TIDBITS I understand we have a very patriotic tennis player among us. It has been reported that Gene Dickie played in all three leagues – the Red League, the White League, and the Blue League – all within eight days. That’s quite a distinction – and it probably won’t be repeated any time soon. Because the tennis league season has officially ended here in Southwest Florida, there won’t be any tennis news to report to the Columns until next fall. In the meantime, we hope that all tennis players will enjoy their summer social tennis, either here at Tara Woods or wherever the others spend their summer months. Submitted by Linda Engel

NEW ENGLAND CLUB The New England Club held it’s Bon Voyage Party at Beef O’Brady’s on April 10th for our annual YankeeRed Sox game. We had a record number of club members in attendance this year and a great time was had by all. Our season ended with the annual Lobsterfest that we shared with the New York/New Jersey Club. The officers want to thank our dedicated, loyal members for all their help and hard work all season long. The Valentine’s Day party which we hosted was a huge success, as was the New England-Mid Atlantic Challenge. We would not have the great club that we have if not for our awesome members! To our snowbirds- safe travels; to our summer survivors-a hurricane-free summer; and to all our members-A healthy, happy, fun summer ! Judy Machnicz
MidWest Club It’s hard to believe that the season is over. We had a lot of laughs, fun and good times. Now it’s time to say goodbye to our snowbirds as they head north. MID-ATLANTIC CLUB March 15th – Well, we finally won the “Bean Bag” challenge against the New England Club. This was the first time, in a very long time, we were not defeated. Hooray, MidAtlantic Club!! Thanks to New England for the fine food and an enjoyable time. April 23rd – Don’t forget our Nokomis Park Beach Party. We will meet at the Clubhouse at 9:00 AM to car pool. Simonson. See you at the beach! May 11th – Annual Mother’s Day Brunch at the Clubhouse. The male members will cook and serve the Mothers a delicious brunch at 12:00 noon. May 26th – All are invited to a Memorial Day celebration at 4:00 PM at the Clubhouse. DJ will be Lloyd and Carolyn playing songs for dancing/singing. Dinner will be served: Barbecued chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, corn on the cob, and watermelon for dessert. We will have a preview of plans for a permanent Memorial Plaque to commemorate our vet-
erans. Tickets are $12.00 per person and are on sale at the Clubhouse during Saturday morning coffee and Tuesday night Bingo. Finally, goodbyes and have a safe trip home to all our friends who will be leaving for the summer. Enjoy the summer and see you in the fall. The Club will not meet in July or August. A good time was had by all at the Lobsterfest in April. The food was outstanding, with thanks to George Daly and his crew and to Ralph Latimer and his crew for the New England Clam Chowder. Thank you to all who participated and helped on that day. By the time you get this, we should have also had our “Outto-Lunch” meeting on Saturday, April 26th, at the new Golden Corral on Pine Island Rd. & Andalusia. Thank you to Tony & Celeste Perre for setting this up for us. Our meeting schedule for October 2014 – April 2015 will be passed out at this meeting and also sent by e-mail, and is available on the bulletin board. Our next event is hosting the Labor Day Party, which will be a Clambake on Monday, September 1st. Watch for a sign-up sheet in August to help for this party. If you are here, we can use your help.

FLORIDA GARDENING CALENDAR JUNE What to plant Annuals: Annuals that can take full sun during the increasingly hot summer months include celosia, portulaca, vinca, and some coleus. Palms: Summer’s warm, rainy weather is the perfect time to plant palms. Herbs: Plant heat loving herbs, including basil, ginger, summer savory, cumin, Mexican tarragon, and rosemary. Vegetables: Plant tropical vegetables such as boniato and chayote this month. What to do Pests: Monitor the garden weekly for harmful insects. Know-
ing which insects attack a plant can aid in identification and control. Irrigation: Watch for drought stress and water as needed if rainfall is spotty. Focus on new plantings and follow water restrictions. When rains begin, shut down the irrigation system. Propagation: Now is a good time to produce more plants by air layering, grafting, division, or cuttings. Palms and cycads: Watch for nutrient deficiencies or environmental problems with palms and correct using an appropriate treatment. Pruning: Many summer flowering shrubs, like hibiscus, oleander, and ixora, bloom more when lightly pruned during the warmer months. FLORIDA GARDENING CALENDAR MAY What to Plant Annuals: Plants that can take summer heat include coleus, salvia, torenia, wax begonia, and ornamental pepper. Bulbs: Some lilies do better when their roots are crowded. Try planting Amazon, Aztec, and Clivia lilies in containers to increase blooming. Herbs: Plant heat loving herbs,
including basil, Mexican tarragon, ginger, cumin, summer savory, and rosemary. Vegetables: Southern favorites to plant now are okra, southern pea, and sweet potato. What to Do Pests: Harmful insects become more active as the weather warms. Watch forthrips, scale, and mites on ornamental plants. Gardenias and Ixora: While some yellowing of older leaves is normal, yellowingof new growth usually indicates a micronutrient deficiency. Oleanders: Chewed or ragged leaves indicate oleander caterpillars at work. Tomatoes: Watch for pests, disease, and nutritional disorders on tomato plants.
