AT TARA WOODS
Another good celebration at Tara Woods! Thank you to the New York/New Jersey Club for hosting the Labor Day Clambake. The food was delicious, and a rousing game of Bean Bag Baseball lent some fun and laughter to the afternoon. It was good to see so many new faces amidst the familiar party regulars!
Whether this party ended the old season or heralded in the new, it was a great way to celebrate Labor Day!

FROM THE PRESIDENT day, November 19th from 3:00 – 6:00 PM in the Clubhouse. Please consider having your group participate, no matter how big or small it may be. This should be a fun afternoon, as well as informational. Keep the applications coming! We’ll accommodate everyone to the best of our ability, but you may not get your ideal spot if you don’t get your application in soon. The enclosed flyer/application makes it even easier for your group to participate. Just fill it out and drop it in the slot by the office in the Clubhouse or give it to a board member. The purpose of the Fair is to let all residents and renters know all the opportunities available to make your life in Tara Woods a wonderful and fulfilling experience, whether you live here year-round, part-time or enjoy our community only during the cold winter months. This is a first-time event open to all who live in Tara Woods and who are eager to find out where they might want to spend some quality time with their friends and neighbors. We hope you come with an open mind
to discover something new and exciting to add to your busy days here in Tara Woods. We’ve been pleased to welcome a number of new residents at Saturday Morning Coffee over the summer. I hope you will continue to join us through the year. It will continue through October every Saturday at 8:00 AM. Pancake Breakfast will resume on the second Saturday in November. Please sign up on the back bulletin board so Fred can prepare enough pancakes, eggs, sausage, etc. for everyone. It will be great having everyone back! It’s been a fairly quiet and restful summer, but now we’re ready to start the new season. Let the fun begin! Janet Daly “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” L. M. Montgomery

GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END All good things must come to an end and I’m saying goodbye as your Sunshine reporter. I am sending a BIG thank you to all our residents for their encouragement and support these last six years. I’ve met many people who, under difficult situations, have shown such grace and showed us all how to manage devastating illnesses and changes in their lives. Tara Woods’ residents are special and we are lucky to live here with such wonderful people. I am thrilled to announce that JOANIE BYRNES will be my replacement, and I know you will give her the same encouragement and support that you gave me. I leave Sunshine in good hands. Nancy Wuebbeler
FMO NEWS I sincerely hope that everyone has had a safe and enjoyable summer. Other than the rain, updates to the showers, sealing of the roadways, etc. it has been a quiet summer. It is Labor Day Weekend as I start to write this and Southwest Florida was fortunate enough to escape the wrath of Hurricane Hermine, except for some heavy rain. Unfortunately, the Florida/ Georgia Border received the brunt of the hurricane causing significant property damage and flooding. With two more months of potential Hurricane weather your FMO and the DBPR (Department of Business and Professional Regulation) want to remind you about the importance of only hiring FLORIDA LICENSED PROFESSIONALS.

Stay well and safe. Stuart Berman
History - The long-standing Tara Woods “Hurricane Committee” from the 1990’s became the Tara Woods “Emergency Preparedness Team” (TWEPT) in the early 2000’s. The mission was the same. It was to provide logistic support to protect the lives and property of the residents. TWEPT was later absorbed by our current “Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)” which was formed in Tara Woods in the mid 2000’s. CERT is a nationally recognized organization that operates under FEMA guidelines to assist in disaster recovery. In 2004 TWEPT/CERT played a major role in providing a safe haven at our Clubhouse during Hurricane “Charlie” and again in 2005 during Hurricane “Wilma”. At those times the Tara Woods Clubhouse was used as a safe haven for those of us who did not or could not leave the community. Should events like these occur again, CERT will prepare the Clubhouse as they did before. Back then we used the community TV channel 95 to inform the community of the progress of the preparations. That method of communication is no longer available in our community.

Anyone coming from out of state needs to obtain a Florida license to legally do any work on your home. Save the date. The first meeting of the 2016-2017 FMO District Meetings is scheduled for Friday, November 11th. Please watch the bulletin board and the Columns for additional information. Welcome Bill Parker to the Tara Woods FMO Team. He will be attending our monthly FMO meetings and be your eyes and ears for the community. Please take a moment to THANK Bill. To our returning snowbirds, have a safe trip. Remember, if you have any questions about the FMO, please do not hesitate to contact one of the team members listed on the bulletin board.
HURRICANE AWARENESS AT TARA WOODS
Today - Should a storm event occur this year or in the future, we will post the ongoing information and preparation plans on our website at www.twha. us under the heading of “T.W.H.A / Hurricane Preparation”. If a decision is made to use the Clubhouse again, a blanket phone call will be generated to the whole community to advise them when it is ready for occupation. Visit the website now and read the documentation that will help prepare you if an event occurs in the near future. Please direct any questions or concerns to the following: Frank Millette - CERT Team Leader, 543-2954 George Daly - CERT Resident Communications, 567-2285

A DAY OF CARING - 2016 A Day of Caring is a day of sharing. We will be kicking off our “Day of Caring” Annual Fund Drive on October 1st and it will run through mid December. This fund drive raises funds to support local Charities that help feed local families in need through the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Last year, Tara Woods residents contributed $2,645 to “Day of Caring”. Thank you for your generous support. “Day of Caring” has added a new charitable organization which will be receiving financial support from “Day of Caring” contribu-
tions. The new organization is Wake Up America. Wake Up America has been serving the needs of the less fortunate for 23 years. They pick up food from Pepperidge Farms and several Publix supermarkets and deliver the food to churches and soup kitchens in our community. One of the vehicles goes out 7 days a week and the other 5 days a week. Financial support is needed to maintain their vehicles in good running condition and keep their gas tanks filled. Look in the October issue of the Columns for “Day of Caring” letter and a contribution envelope. I will
be making periodic reports on the progress of the fund drive. In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding “Day of Caring” call John D’Amico at 731-7928. Your contributions can be either mailed or dropped in the contribution box located on the windowsill of the Tara Woods Homeowners Association’s office. Please use the “Day of Caring” envelope provided. Thank you for your continued support. John D’Amico

WELCOME BACK SNOWBIRDS! We hope everyone enjoyed their summer, whether it was in hot, steamy Tara Woods or the equally hot, steamy North. We hope to see everyone at our Annual Welcome Back Wine and Cheese Party on Saturday, October 8th at 4:00 PM. Admission fee of $3.00 per person will be collected at the door. Social raffle tickets will also be sold at the door, so bring some extra $$ and wear your name tags. The sign-up sheet is posted on the Clubhouse bulletin board so PLEASE sign up with your name and the number of people in your party. If you find you cannot attend, please cross off your name as soon as possible since we base our purchases on the number of people expected. As always, everyone from New York and New Jersey is welcome to attend our meetings. New residents, renters and visitors are especially welcome. Let’s have a great turn-out for our first meeting of the new season! October Hosts: Chuck and Marcia Poveromo and friends. Any questions, please call 560-9642. Marcia Poveromo Thank you to all who helped with the Labor Day Clambake. It’s taking us all a little longer to recuperate these days, so the many hands do help our backs heal a little faster. The preparations started on Friday with Fred
Puhlfuerst hauling the propane tanks, cement blocks and tubs from the back shed and making sure the tanks were filled. On Sunday afternoon, under the supervision of Janet and George Daly and with the help of John Costantini, Stu Berman, Fred Puhlfuerst, Chuck Poveromo, Pat Sparany, Belle Berman and Lorraine Milligan (who wasn’t able to attend the party), the tables were set up and the seafood was prepared. The party prep started early on Monday morning with Janet getting the baked beans in the oven and John Costantini and George setting up the Verandah for cooking and serving. Stu, Fred and Chuck were back to set up tables for eating on the Verandah and various other heavy-duty jobs. Jon and Mary Ellen Gold arrived to put the finishing touches on the tables, prepare the cole slaw, and do various other chores before leaving to pick up the rotisserie chickens at BJ’s. Pat Sparany was back to fill the cups with seafood sauce and cut all the cakes for dessert. She then proceeded to do some early cleaning up. Thank you to our cooks: John Costantini (who, also, wasn’t able to attend the party) and George Daly, and runners and serving crew: Mary Ellen and Jon Gold, Barbara Bahnsen (George’s sister, visiting for the day) and Stu Berman. Janet and George filled in where needed. Thank you also to the ticket sellers: Stu Berman, Marcia Poveromo, Lorraine Milligan and Barbara Roland. You did a great job! A big Thank You to Janell Wissler and Arlene Greene for running the Bean Bag Baseball game and to Frank Millette from Sound & Lighting for providing our electronic needs. They were honorary NY/NJ Club members for the day. Thank you
to Joan Powers, Arlene and Janell for selling the Social Raffle tickets. Two prizes of $46 each were won by Irene Bartsch and Ann Millette. The clean-up was amazing. The Clubhouse was back to normal very quickly, thanks to Fred Puhlfuerst hauling garbage and everyone pitching in to clean off tables and put things away. Another special Thank You to Pat Sparany, who also didn’t attend the party, but returned to wash dishes! – and to Stu Berman who did so many chores and then ended up at the sink washing the 60 and 80 quart pots used to cook the corn and seafood. It’s a pleasure to work with people who just see what needs to be done – and do it! George, Fred, Chuck, and I were back on Tuesday afternoon to put away all the extra tables and chairs and ice buckets, trays, pots, etc. that were left to dry overnight. Thank you to the dozen people who worked to make this party a success. These parties can be a lot of work, but the fun is working together and having some good laughs in the process. It’s like giving birth – you forget the pain until the next one comes around. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the host of the November NY/NJ Club meeting had to withdraw his offer to run the meeting. Please consider hosting the Saturday, November 12th meeting of the Club. It will be decided at the October meeting. I look forward to our new season, and everyone returning to Tara Woods. I hope you signed up for the Welcome Back Wine and Cheese Party on Saturday, October 8th, hosted by Marcia and Chuck Poveromo. New residents from New York and New Jersey are always welcome!

INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW… At the intersection of Cotton Bay and Charleston Circle, neighbors have stopped to ask me what the “other” flag represents. To my family, it means Police Lives Matter. My son-in-law is an NYPD Peggy Gasmire originally painted the front panel of the Tiki Hut in June 2006. Vote For Smart InVeStment moVeS The presidential election is little more than a month away. Like all elections, this one has generated considerable interest, and, as a citizen, you may well be following it closely. But as an investor, how much should you be concerned about the outcome? Probably not as much as you might think. Historically, the financial markets have done well – and done poorly – under both Democratic and Republican administrations. Also, many factors affecting investment performance have little or nothing to do with the occupant of the White House. Consequently, no one can claim, with any certainty, that one candidate is going to be “better for the markets” than another one. Still, this isn’t to say that any given presidential administration will have no effect at all on investors. For example, a president could propose changes to the laws governing investments, and if Congress passes those laws, investors could be affected. But in looking at the broader picture, there’s not much evidence that a particular president is going to affect the overall return of your investment portfolio. As mentioned above, many factors – corporate earnings, interest rates, foreign affairs, even natural disasters – can and will influence the financial markets. But in evaluating a president’s potential effect on your investments, you also need to consider something else: Our political system does not readily accommodate radical restructuring of any kind. So it’s difficult for any president to implement huge policy shifts – and that’s actually good for the financial markets, which, by their nature, dislike uncertainty, chaos and big changes. The bottom line? From your viewpoint as an investor, don’t worry too much about what happens in November. Instead, follow these investment strategies: Stay invested. If you stop investing when the market is down in an effort to cut your losses, you may miss the opportunity to participate in the next rally – and the early stages of a rally are typically when the biggest gains occur. Diversify. By spreading your dollars among an array of investments, such as stocks, bonds and other investments, you can help reduce the possibility of your portfolio taking a big hit if a market downturn primarily affected just one type of financial asset. Keep in mind though, that diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses. Stay within your risk tolerance. Investing always involves risk, but you’ll probably be more successful (and less stressed out) if you don’t stray beyond your individual risk tolerance. At the same time, if you invest too conservatively, you might not achieve the growth potential you need to reach your goals. So you will need to strike an appropriate balance. Forget about chasing “hot” stocks. Many so-called “experts” encourage people to invest in today’s “hot” stocks. But by the time you hear about them, these stocks – if they were ever “hot” to begin with – have probably already cooled off. More importantly, they might not have been suitable for your needs, anyway. In any case, there’s really no “short cut” to investment success. Elections – and even presidents – come and go. But when you “vote” for solid investment moves, you can help yourself make progress toward your financial goals.

We don’t usually publish any tennis news until the November issue of the Columns, but I thought it would be good to update everyone now on our upcoming tennis season – just to get you thinking about Tara Woods tennis. I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. Whether you headed north to your home state or you stayed in Tara Woods, I hope that playing some tennis was at least part of your summer activities. I hope all of you are ready to enjoy the upcoming tennis season at Tara Woods – either in league play or by participating in our social tennis activities. League play for both the Women and the Men usually starts in early November. The actual start dates for the Women’s SWIFT league and the Men’s Red, White, and Blue leagues will be published as soon as we get that information. Sunday, November 27th, marks the start of our first Round Robin and our first Tennis Association Meeting of the season. It would be nice to have a good turnout for both events. As a reminder, Janell Wissler and Arlene Greene volunteered to host the dinner for the Sunday, November 27th Round Robin, and Kathy Rafferty volunteered to handle the courtside refreshments. For the Sunday, January 22nd Round Robin, George and Janet Daly volunteered to host the dinner, but we still need someone to handle the courtside refreshments for that day. We also need people to volunteer to host the dinners for February 26th and March 26th Round Robins, and we also need someone to handle the courtside snacks on those dates. If you haven’t volunteered in a while, maybe you could consider helping out on these dates. Submitted by Linda Engel
TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB
Circle. We will begin meeting in the Clubhouse again on the first Thursday in November. Last month we covered tablets, smart phones, ebook readers, and other portable devices. We will be continuing with computer speech, music, and videos. This includes computer voices and text-to-speech, voice recognition and search, streaming and downloading music, media players, and online or recorded videos. I also answer general questions, as well as any topic the Club members might suggest. Bring something to take notes with and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Please call me with any questions or comments at 652-0488. I’m looking forward to seeing you.
The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes, and is open to all residents and visitors. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. We are meeting at my home during the Summer season like we have in past years. These meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 10:30 AM. They offer a more relaxed atmosphere, with coffee and donuts provided for free. It’s hard to believe that in just a few months we will be at the end of another year. By the time you read this article we will have had our first rehearsal for next season and we hope to have some new members. In last month’s Columns we were very happy to see our picture with the “Choralaires” and we look forward to having them join us again in 2017. Next year’s performance will
feature a variety of music. We will be singing Broadway music, some from Motion Pictures, some Patriotic, and some contemporary pieces. We invite anyone who enjoys singing to join us (especially guys) (gals, we need you too) in the Clubhouse on Monday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. SOUND & LIGHTING COMMITTEE Your support inspires us to keep providing professional entertainment for the community and providing support to community groups, organizations and resident events. Many of you have told us that when the Sound & Lighting puts on a show, you know you are going to enjoy it and we appreciate hearing that. Recently, two members of our group have left our community and now we are looking for new members who would be interested in working with audio/visual systems and equipment. Our loss of these members will make it difficult to continue to provide our services to the community. Experience is preferred but not necessary. If interested, please talk to Polly Brown or Frank Millette. Once again, from the Sound & Lighting Committee, thank you for your continued support. Sound & Lighting Committee

What to plant Bedding Plants: Even though temperatures are still warm, begin planting for the cooler months ahead. Impatiens, alyssum, and dianthus are good plants for the fall/ winter garden. Bulbs: Plant agapanthus, rain lily, and Clivia lily now for blooms next spring or summer. Add organic matter to the planting bed for best results.

(Continuing: The Garden Club from page 24) Herbs: A wide range of herbs can be planted from seed or transplants this month. Some to try are dill, fennel, parsley, and cilantro. Vegetables: Plant crops now that will grow and produce through the winter months. This includes beet, English pea, carrot, garlic, and onion. What to do Lawn weeds: Control winter weeds in lawns before they appear. Pre-emergent herbicides should be applied when nighttime temps drop to 55-60°F for several consecutive nights. Fertilize ornamental trees and shrubs: This is the last month of the year to fertilize shrubs and trees. Controlled-release fertilizer provides nutrients over a longer period of time. Fertilize lawns: For bahiagrass and centipedegrass lawns use a fertilizer (not a weed & feed) that
contains controlled-release nitrogen for longer lasting results. Choose one with little or no phosphorus unless a soil test indicates a need. This is the last lawn fertilization for the year. Strawberries: Prepare beds and set strawberry plants this month. Strawberries also make a colorful and tasty container planting. Water daily until plants are established. Fertilize Palms: Fertilize palms this month with 8-212+4Mg. Oleanders: The oleander caterpillar is a year round resident in South Florida. To control without harming beneficial insects, prune off infested leaves or spray with BT (Bacillus thuringiensis). Twig girdlers: Small branches falling from oak and hickory trees may be the work of twig girdlers. To control, clean up and destroy fallen branches, which may harbor young twig girdlers.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH Your NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH is working for you. The two primary reasons for the WATCH are the protection of our residents and the observation of our community. Check on your neighbors who may be housebound or ill. If you haven’t seen them for a while check on them. If you see something out of the ordinary, call and report the problem (911 or 477-1000). If you are calling from your cell phone, remember to state that you are located in Lee County. THIS MONTH’S TIPS: Let’s remember some of our park rules. • 20 MPH speed limit. • Golf Carts (licensed driver) • Don’t feed WILD ANIMALS (feral cats, dogs, turtles and alligators). • If walking in the evening or early morning, wear white clothing and carry a flashlight. ENTERTAINING NEWS ries of people who have worked with the Entertainers and how they came to join our group. This month is no exception. The first story is from someone connected to and a very vital part of the Entertainers and a very good friend of mine. • In 2003, my wife and I moved to Tara Woods and for eight years I blissfully enjoyed life at leisure. One day in 2011 while I was in the Clubhouse with Pat Patterson, engaging in conversation about life in general, Polly Brown and her sister Francel Lizotte said to us, “We need you to join the Sound & Lighting committee.” We said, “Sure.” Shortly after this we found ourselves at the Sound & Lighting committee meeting. I explained my qualification for joining this group was my ability to turn on my stereo and the lights in my house. “Am I eligible to join this group?” They replied a resound-
ing, “Yes.” Thus began my career as a Sound & Lighting technician. Learning how to set up the mikes for meetings etc., and how the sound board works completed my education. So with this newfound education I went forth to the community to assist as needed. Along comes the Entertainers who are putting on a show and they need sound and lights. My first experience with the Entertainers was with the musical, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”. This was a show that very much needed sound and light help. Every one of the cast looked to me as if I had years of experience; I managed to pull it off since I don’t think anyone realized that I was new at this. One funny experience happened during the dress rehearsal when I was putting a mike on Ann West. We worked out of the pool room when we put mikes on actors since we had to put the
wire for the mikes down their clothes. Just as I was putting the wire down the back of Ann West, somebody walked into the pool room and as a joke stepped back and said, “Well, excuse me.” Not missing a beat, Ann replied, “Hey at my age if I can get anyone to get into my blouse, all the better.” We had a good laugh over this; Ann is such a comic anyway. Since then there have been many challenges and I have enjoyed learning how to overcome them and create a solution to each. Working with the actors, stage crew and my own Sound & Lighting people has been a rewarding experience. Without any experience I learned about how to create a sound effect and the aspect of sound on stage. I have enjoyed these experiences, and look forward to many more shows and chances to work with my fellow Tara-ites….. Frank Millette
Our next story is from one of the busiest and nicest people I know. • I guess I’ve never been afraid of being “on stage”. Maybe my first experience as a “Butterfly” – chasing a Honeybee in a Kindergarten play – made me comfortable on stage at an early age. As a student in Mrs. Glass’ fourth grade class, you were in her annual “operetta”. In that one I was a “Lollipop” in “The Sweet Shop”. It’s been all uphill since then. At every elementary school talent show I played the piano. The same piece…every time. My parents got really tired of hearing that piece, “The Mill”, and I couldn’t even hum it today. I had no interest in the stage as an actor after elementary school. I sang in the Chorus in Junior and Senior High, but that was it.

So Ladies and Gentlemen….. here we are in October, another chance to frolic and romp with our fellow members of the community. One of the ways to frolic and romp with everyone will be given to you in November at the Community Opportunity Fair put on by your Board of Directors. They are giving you the chance to see firsthand what fun and interesting things there are to do in Tara Woods. The clubs and groups, like the Entertainers, are going to have booths to explain what we do and how you might fit yourself into these groups. The groups are looking for new people to join but also wanting to show you what we have to offer throughout the year for you to enjoy. Make sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, November 19th – more information later. Now to the stories. This Summer I have been sharing the sto-

(Continuing: Entertaining News from page 26) I will be in my fifth production with the March 2017 play, and have finally come to terms with the early rehearsals. That’s showbiz!.....Janet Daly Our next story is from one of the backstage people who started with me, and is also a real sweetie. • How did I join the Entertainers? I responded to a call for help in the Columns and showed up at one of their meetings. After the meeting I spoke with Polly Brown. I told her I would be willing to help with any projects they needed me to do, but that I NEVER wanted to be an actor and be on stage. Several months later, on a Sunday evening I received a call from Francel Lizotte (Polly’s sister). She and Patty Sparany were the backstage crew for “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown”. They could use another person. Would I help? I showed up for rehearsal Monday morning
and survived the play on Friday and Saturday evenings. I spent several years with Patty happily doing backstage work. Then came 2014 and “The Scheme of the Driftless Shifter”, I was asked to fill in during rehearsals and read the part of “Marigold” until the actress playing the part returned from the North. No Problem. Except “Marigold” decided not to return, and since I had been reading the part would I take the part for the play? Throwing caution to the wind I said yes, and as they say the rest is history..…Carol Shields

I tried out for a part in the annual ninth grade musical, but I didn’t have the “Broadway” voice needed. I ended up in a trio and in the chorus. My first experience “acting” didn’t start until I took a seminar on Biblical Storytelling with Thomas Boomershine, about 20 years ago. This was about the time I was encouraged by my pastor to become a preacher. That didn’t happen as a career, but I had fun and felt fulfilled preaching and storytelling occasionally in my church. It wasn’t until I came to Tara Woods that I wound up on stage again. Doing a small walk-on bit for the Chorus caught the eye of The Entertainers, and I was pursued by some avid members to join the group. I gave in and attended rehearsals at 8:00 AM twice a week – moaning and groaning about the early hour.
