FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou Your Homeowners Association saw the realization of our ongoing goal to get the COVID-19 vaccination right here in Tara Woods. On Tuesday, March 30th, the Pfizer first shot Vaccination happened for all interested residents, including homebound residents. The “thank you’s” are many: • The over 200 residents who signed individual letters to our Lee County Commissioner, Brian Hamman. • Tara Woods Hometown America. • Brian Hamman who provided excellent outreach from his office. • CDR/Maguire Heath and Medical for their onsite efforts.
Thank you one and all The show must go on! The hardy group of theatrical entertainers along with the Sound & Lighting team were determined to put on a play for the residents. And they did! They performed two radio plays of Fibber McGee and Molly while adhering to all safety protocols, keeping the actors and audience safe. Well done! Your Homeowners Association hosted the First Ever outdoor Spring Fling – Dancing in The Street Party for ALL residents on Saturday, March 27th. The weather was great and the turnout was fabulous. It was
uplifting to see so many Tara-rites visiting with each other and enjoying themselves. The line dancers took over Shiloh Lane and put on a clinic of line dancing in the street. Well done! The DJ provided music that we all knew and remembered. The Karaoke was an extra added bonus. The food truck was a great addition. On March 25th, Christi Kulwizki, Public Education Officer from the North Fort Myers Fire District, came to Tara Woods and provided a safety seminar and CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) informal talk. We are now in the process of reestablishing our own CERT team in Tara Woods. The interest was great and it looks like a good new beginning. If you are interested, please contact resident Dick Resh, at 215-5829811 or rresh@juno.com. Our first “outdoor” Tara Woods Homeowners Meeting was held on Monday, April 12th, at 6:00 PM in the parking lot of the Clubhouse. Many items were covered and reported on by the Board. You may view the minutes from the meeting on our website www. twhoa.net.

FMO NEWS: TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS Unfortunately, nothing much has changed as we enter the fifth month of 2021. My first reaction is where has 2021 gone. The FMO monthly meetings are over. Hopefully, come November, we can start anew. Unless something changes between now and then, FMO meetings will be held on the second Friday of the month, usually starting at 1:00 PM. The meeting is informative, educational, and possibly lifesaving. Anyone wishing to serve on the FMO Committee, or possibly service at the District level, please contact Stuart Berman at 239-220-2369. What is FMO and what does it do for you? FMO stands for the Federation of Manufactured Homeowners. They are there to serve you. The Officers of FMO are volunteers. They also maintain a lobbyist in Tallahassee to make us aware of possible bills that will affect our pocketbooks or way of life. Recently, the legislature, needing additional funding, was planning on putting a sales tax on our monthly rent. For example, if your monthly

rent was $600.00, and the tax was 7%, then the monthly sales tax would be $42.00 or $504.00 per year in addition to your lot rent. For those of you who enjoy playing Bingo, you can thank and continue to thank the FMO. In the first instance, the FMO rallied the membership, and the bill was defeated. The larger bingo operations are still fighting to get bingo stopped in our communities. The FMO is there to protect our interests. A one-year membership is $25.00, and three years is $65.00. If you haven’t joined, I strongly encourage you to do so. If you haven’t renewed, please do. Just because we did not have meetings doesn’t mean we don’t need your support. It is needed 365 days a year, to protect our interests. Applications are available on the back bulletin board in the Clubhouse. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. To our snowbirds, safe travels and we will see you in the fall. Thank you. Stuart Berman

Thank you for all the praise over my work at the butterfly garden. Thank you for your continuing contributions for the firemen and the kids. Tom so enjoyed the people here and always looked forward to seeing everyone especially his poker playing buddies, cribbage, bowling, casino trips and also when he was able, golfing. KITCHEN HELP NEEDED The Kitchen Committee is looking for four to six people to join the Committee as Saturday Morning Coffee hosts for the summer, May thru October. Two people always work together to set up, host, and cleanup. This is the current procedure: The Coffee is set up the Friday before. At 7:00 AM Saturday morning one person goes to Publix to pick up the donuts, which are pre-ordered by me. The other person arrives at the Clubhouse about 7:15 AM to make sure all is ready to serve the guests around 7:45 AM. Clean-up starts either when the meeting begins or ends. That’s up to you. Polly Brown is our Cashier/Treasurer. She is there every Saturday morning to be the cashier, so the hosts can give the guests their full attention. With two people serving each week, a committee of ten people is ideal and means each person would host only one Saturday each
month. A schedule is prepared for the summer, but is flexible if someone has last minute plans. Whether you are new or have lived here for years, this is a great opportunity to greet old friends and get to know your new Tara Woods neighbors, while doing a needed and appreciated service for the community. Some of the current members of the committee enjoy this opportunity so much, they have been serving for a few years. I am only asking for a one-year commitment at this time. If you would like to join us or would like to know more about it, please give us a call. Thank you! Janet & George Daly Chairpersons, Kitchen Committee since 2005 239-567-2285, janetdaly@yahoo.com

GARDEN CLUB
The Garden Club wishes all the “Snowbirds” a safe trip home and wishes everyone a safe and healthy summer. We will continue to monitor the virus protocol and will keep everyone advised of what will be happening next season. If you haven’t heard, Linda Hoos is moving. Linda and her husband John, along with some other volunteers, are the reason the Butterfly Garden looks so great and is a safe haven for all the butterflies. Linda and John will be greatly missed. Luckily, Diane West, a newcomer to Tara Woods, loves to garden and has agreed to take over the garden. If you see her in the Butterfly Garden, say hello. The Butterfly Garden is a very peaceful place to sit, overlooking the lake, and if you are lucky, you can see all the butterflies that it attracts. Coming from the North, I had no idea how to care for my palm trees. In doing research, I found this to be very interesting, and thought I would share with everyone. This was something I definitely was doing wrong. OVER-PRUNING. I keep seeing articles online that tell people to cut off the brown part of the leaf because it will save the palm tree from wasting nutrients on the dying leaf. Makes sense, right? Wrong. Palm trees need dying leaves for nutrients, and when you cut them off, your palm tree doesn’t like it. Palms move nutrients from the older fronds to the new growth. Palm fronds should be cut when they are as close as possible to the trunk. Do NOT remove any fronds that grow at 45 degree angle, or greater. If your palm tree looks like a rooster tail, you over-pruned it. (from the Florida Palm Tree website). I have been following this and my trees now look great. Stay safe. What to Plant
Annuals/Bedding plants: Plants that can take summer heat include coleus, salvia, torenia, wax begonia, and ornamental pepper. Bulbs: Some lilies do better when their roots are crowded. Try planting Amazon, Aztec, and Clivia lilies in containers to increase blooming. Herbs: Plant heat-loving herbs, including basil, Mexican tarragon, ginger, cumin, summer savory, and rosemary. Vegetables: Sweet potatoes, boniato, hot peppers, and tropical “spinach” such as Sisso, Malabar, and New Zealand can be planted now.
What to Do
Pests: Watch for thrips, scale, and mites on ornamental plants because they become more active in warm weather. Gardenias and ixora: Distinguish between the normal yellowing of older leaves and the yellowing of new growth, which usually indicates a micronutrient deficiency. Oleanders: Inspect chewed or ragged leaves for oleander caterpillars Lawns: Watch for damage from chinch bugs in St. Augustine grass and begin scouting for newly hatched mole crickets in bahia grass lawns. Prevent or minimize disease by following proper cultural practices when caring for lawns. Tomatoes: Watch for pests, disease, and nutritional disorders on tomato plants. Trees: Prepare for hurricane season by checking trees for damaged or weak branches and prune if needed. Hire an ISA-certified arborist. Excerpts from the University of Florida Gardening calendar.
Help protect your family’s inheritance
You might contribute to your IRA for decades to help pay for your retirement. But if you don’t need all the money, you may want to leave what’s left to your children or grandchildren. However, if you want to ensure they get the most from this inheritance, you’ll need to do some planning. Here’s a little background: Up until a couple of years ago, when you left the proceeds of your IRA to your beneficiaries, they could choose to “stretch” required withdrawals over a long period, based on their life expectancies. These required withdrawals were generally taxable, so this “stretch IRA” allowed your beneficiaries to greatly reduce the annual taxes due, while benefiting from longer tax-deferred growth potential. And the younger the beneficiary, the longer the life expectancy and the lower the withdrawals, so this technique would have been especially valuable for your grandchildren or even great-grandchildren. Changes in laws affecting retirement accounts have significantly limited the stretch IRA strategy. Now, most non-spouse beneficiaries must withdraw all assets from the IRA within 10 years of the IRA owner’s death. The beneficiary generally does not have to take out any money during that 10-year period, but at the end of it, the entire balance must be withdrawn – and that could result in a pretty big tax bill. The stretch IRA strategy can still be used for surviving spouses, beneficiaries who are no more than 10 years younger than the deceased IRA owner, and beneficiaries who are chronically ill or disabled. Minor children of the original account owner are also eligible for a stretch IRA – but only until they reach the age of majority, at which time the 10-year rule applies. So, if you want to leave your IRA to family members who don’t meet any of the above exceptions, what can you do? One possibility is a Roth IRA conversion. You could convert a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA over your lifetime, so your heirs would receive the Roth IRA. They would still be required to withdraw the assets within 10 years, but unlike with a traditional IRA, Roth IRA withdrawals are generally tax-free. These conversions are taxable, so you’ll want to consult your tax professional in addition to your financial advisor, to determine if this strategy can help you achieve your legacy goals. Another option is to purchase life insurance, which can provide a specific dollar amount to your heirs or be used to help cover additional taxes. This may be especially advantageous if you are 72 or older, in good health, and taking withdrawals – technically called required minimum distributions – from your retirement accounts, such as your traditional IRA and your 401(k). If you don’t really need the money, you can use these withdrawals to pay for some or all of the insurance premiums. Life insurance can’t replace an IRA as a means to save for retirement, though, so you should consult with your financial advisor to make sure you are working toward all your goals. In any case, if you have a sizable IRA or you don’t need the funds that you’re required to take from your retirement accounts, you may want to start thinking about what you want to do with the money. The more thorough your legacy planning, the better your chances of meeting your legacy goals.

ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen...May is in full bloom in Florida. Those of you with allergies know all about this. I do hope that the majority of you have received your COVID-19 shots. Those who have not yet, hang in there. The life of the Entertainers during the summer is one of waiting, relaxing and reading. We all know the play that we hope to perform in March of 2022 is “She Was Only Marginally Modest” from the year that did not happen. We needed to make a few changes to the cast, but for the most part, as far as we know now, the cast should be about the same. They will be relearning their lines. Right, cast? As to the set, it was put away and we hope to be able to re-invent it on stage again. First time ever redoing a play like this. There is always a new adventure when it comes to live performances. But you know, new adventures
are good for us humans. This past year has been a new adventure. We know that it has been hard but possibly we have learned something about ourselves. We need each other, not just to speak with but also to be with, work with, and yes even argue with. People need people, as the song goes. If we have learned anything, it is that our community is a family. We laugh, cry, complain and enjoy each other. Let’s not forget this as we work our way out of this time of physical distancing. Enough of that. Go out there and fist bump someone that you see (in another time one could say hug each other). Just enjoy each other’s company. Life is full of drama, why not join the club? Pat Dunning, President of the Entertainers 239-240-5848 pdunning46@gmail.com
This is Old Glory. Is yours faded and torn? Retire her to a proper disposal. Drop her off at 19553 Charleston Circle (lot #12) or at the Guard House. Replacements are available from $8.00. Bob Glandorf
• Due to the limited seating, there will be no saving seats for anyone. • There will be no concessions for now, but you may bring your own snacks and beverages. If anyone refuses to comply with these provisions, they will be asked to leave. Should they refuse to leave and cannot be persuaded to do so by others, the Bingo session will be terminated, and the hall will be vacated. No refunds will be given. These are very trying times and many of us are ready for something to change. If we all do our part and follow these guidelines, we can stay safe and have some fun. If you have any questions, call Polly Brown at 239-246-2391.

TENNIS NEWS TENNIS ASSOCIATION
There is nothing new to report. Next fall – if everything hopefully gets back to “normal” – we will again have our monthly Tennis Association Meetings. OPEN TENNIS Even though a lot of the regular tennis players go north for the summer, the “open mixed doubles tennis” continues throughout the summer. Join us from 9:00 – 10:30 AM every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. All skill levels are welcome to join us on the courts. If you have an interest in tennis, stop by the courts and check us out. TENNIS LEAGUES Men’s League A sign-up sheet for next season’s Men’s Tennis Teams has been posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board. If you intend to play on one of the Men’s teams next season, be sure to sign up. Women’s League A sign-up sheet for next season’s Women’s Tennis Team has also been posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board. We are hopeful that there will be a tennis league next season where we can play fun, competitive tennis with the other women’s teams in our area.
We would like to get an idea of who is interested in playing on the Tara Woods Angels team next season so we suggest that you sign up now. TWIT (Tara Woods Inter-Community Tennis) This is our last TWIT write-up for the season because our Thursday morning TWIT “officially” ended on April 8th. We polled all the players about this season and everyone really enjoyed the internal competition. Stay tuned for next season when the snowbirds return to see if we would like to continue TWIT next year. – Mike Renzulli Personally, I had a great time playing in the TWIT league and I have the feeling that most of the people really enjoyed it as well. I have to add my “Congratulations” to the guys in the top tier of the ladder for playing great tennis – you know who you are! TWIT was organized and run by Dick Heffron and Mike Renzulli. – Linda Engel ROUND ROBINS Nothing to report. – Dale Holat, Round Robin Coordinator Submitted by Linda Engel

MAGIC SOFTBALL 2021 RECAP The Tara Woods Magic Softball Team recently completed its 2021 season, and it was TERRIFIC. Our overall record of 13 wins versus 8 losses was our best yet, BY FAR! We received a nice first place divisional trophy for the Tara Woods trophy case. We now settle down for a hiatus until November when we will begin organizing for the 2022 season, with practices to begin in December. The games begin the first week of January, and the season is completed by late March. Games are Monday and Wednesday nights at Carmelita Park, in Punta Gorda, near the airport. We have a core group of players who participate every year, and the balance of the roster has a yearly changeover. We are always
looking for new players who love the game and would like one final hurrah to play a kid’s game once more, at least until the body says, “no more.” Watch for information in the October issue of The Columns regarding our next season organizing and start-up. We also want to thank those fans who attended our games and supported our efforts, win or lose. After all, winning is fun but the real thrill is simply playing a game we all love. And for those who wish we could have had our famous Spaghetti Dinner in January, let’s hope that next year everything returns to “normal.” Thanks again, and we’ll see you all in November. Larry Baldwin, Manager, and the rest of the Magic.
SHUFFLEBOARD If anyone is interested in playing Horse Collar on Mondays at 10:00 AM, the cost is $1.00 per player (to be given away as prizes). Anyone can
play. The Tuesday and Friday leagues began in January 2021. Call Ken Atkinson at 815-970-0467 if you have any questions.

WATCH THE BUTTS!! A resident brought to my attention the alarming number of cigarette butts near her house. I have seen several butts while walking my dogs here in Tara Woods. The resident reminded me that this is dry season, and just forgetting to really make sure even one of those butts is out could start a fire right here in Tara Woods. Look at our yards, they crunch when walked on. That crunch is a big reminder just how dry everything is. So, we are asking you all to be very careful with your butts. The best thing would be to not

even put them on the ground but take them back home with you. Not only would this help with fire prevention, but help keep Tara Woods as neat and clean as it can be. Wild animals and many dogs have eaten them and can get very ill. So, for the safety of us all, and just good manners, take care of your butts. Someone once told me that God didn’t make this beautiful world to be your ashtray. Hmmm, think about it. Thanks, Chris Olson

What’s Happening?
SHILOH SPEAKS Ah! It’s the month of May. Where did that month go? By the way, I DID get my fill of Easter, especially those hardboiled colored Easter Eggs. I didn’t have to hunt too far for them!! Yes, we must realize that last May 2020 was quite a hardship for young and old, due to the COVID-19, but it seems we are trying to get back on track. Most of us have gotten our shots – and social distancing should STILL be practiced.

SPORTS, EXERCISE, and ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES Summer is coming fast here in southwest Florida. The cold and flu season is over, but not the COVID-19 season, just yet. Because of following pandemic guidelines, there were very few cases of the flu and colds – proof that masks, social distancing and washing hands does work! We just have to hang in there a little longer until everyone gets their shots and “herd immunity” takes effect before we can relax and get back to normal. Please continue to follow the guidelines to stay healthy and safe. Don’t forget to get your tickets for the Memorial Day dinner at the Clubhouse on Monday, May 31st, hosted by Bill Black & Friends and the Dog Park Club. Check out all the information in this issue of The Columns. Bill will also be decorating Tara Blvd. and the front of the Clubhouse lawn with flags honoring our military
veterans. Hundreds of flags are needed to support this effort. You can donate to purchase a flag at Saturday Morning Coffee or contact Marie Ivens. As the pandemic guidelines relax and the Clubhouse opens up a little more, watch for more groups to start meeting again. The TWHOA website will post new activities when notified. Word of mouth and phone calls work well also. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions regarding the events at this time, or in the future. Welcome Committee
TAI CHI When are classes? Tai Chi classes are FREE and begin Thursday, April 1 in the Tara Woods Clubhouse. Classes will meet year-round Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. Who is teaching classes? Our instructor is Tony Fettig. Tony has twenty years martial arts experience (Tai Chi is a form of martial art) and ten years experience in Tai Chi, five of those years as an instructor. He is a full-time resident at Pine Lakes for the past ten years, where he teaches Tai Chi classes twice a week. How do I sign up for classes or contact with questions? Contact Barbara Werner-Lubich, Tara Woods resident. Phone: 410-409-5874 Email: barbara.wernerlubich@gmail.com What is Tai Chi? Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for mind and body health. Tai Chi is a mind-body practice that involves a series of slow, gentle, flowing exercises that combine movement, meditation, and rhythmic breathing. Who is Tai Chi for? Everyone!! Men and women, any age. Like starting any exercise, it is important to ask your physician any questions you may have about whether Tai Chi is right for you. What are the health benefits of Tai Chi? Tai Chi has been shown to improve one’s flexibility, coordination, relaxation, balance, stamina, and blood oxygenation. It has also been shown to help relieve stress and reduce blood pressure and heart rate. All are particularly important as we age. With the mind and body united in movement, seniors find they feel good and can bring this feeling into their everyday lives, making them more resilient physically and emotionally. What are classes like? Tony teaches the Taoist forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. First 20 minutes: Foundation exercises, slowly and gently working all muscle groups
and joints with an emphasis on deep breathing and relaxation. Second 20 minutes: From the beginning, step by step learning the forms of Master Moy Lin Shin. Demonstrating and practicing each movement in order, emphasizing stance, direction, hand and foot position, all in order to achieve the most physical benefit. Last 20 minutes: Connecting the learned movements into the relaxed, continuous, flowing form of Tai Chi. What should I bring to class? Tony recommends comfortable clothes and flat shoes that allow the foot to glide and pivot. One of the best shoes for Tai Chi is FitKicks available on Amazon for $20-$23. Ballet style slippers like those sold by Isotoner (any brand will do) are also acceptable. Just want to try out Tai Chi before buying shoes? You can wear socks for the short term. Not allowed: bare feet or sneakers. Not sure if shoes you already have are acceptable? Bring them to class to show Tony along with socks just in case. Bring a water bottle. It’s important to stay well hydrated and we will take a brief water break part way through class.
EXERCISE FOR SENIORS CURTIS IS BACK & HE IS LOOKING FOR YOU!! Now is the time to get up and get going again. This is a total body workout that can be done standing or sitting down. It includes stretching, balance, cardio and light weights. Give it a try - nothing to lose and may even gain some muscle. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays in the clubhouse at 8:00 AM. Any questions, please contact Barb Simonson at 541-840-4430.

POKER, ANYONE? LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” Rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. It is most likely the least stressful and least expensive poker you can play around here! It’s a good night to socialize with the ladies and make new friends with the girls who like to play poker. The stakes are very low. Call Polly Brown, 731-1614, if you’d like to join us – she’ll fill you in on the details or answer any questions you may have.
