THE TOWER Volume 33 | NO 6 & 7 | JUNE / JULY 2017

941-349-0194 | ISLAND VISITOR PUBLISHING, LLC | www.DELTURA-HOA.com

I have enjoyed my working relationship with many Delturians over the last twenty years while being a member of The Tower staff. Sadly many of these folks are no longer with us. As my retirement rapidly approaches I would like to thank my co-editor, friend, support system, and all around wonderful person, Ginnie Benjamins for all her hard work. I would also be very remiss if I did not thank Gerry Benjamins, the guy that “taught me all I know”, and stood by me through numerous computer glitches and crashes. Photos on this page and articles throughout this issue are “some of my favorite things” from my years as editor.

From the President’s Desk Greetings everyone and welcome to summer! As we wrap up Memorial Day and step into the hottest months of the year, I just want to take a moment to remind each of you to take care of yourselves in the heat. Dress comfortably, drink plenty of fluids, and try to avoid any strenuous work or exercise during the heat of the day. We have FIVE pools. Take a break with a swim, find a lounge chair and read a book. Please remember to obey all the rules at whatever pool you visit to keep it safe for everyone. Evenings during the summer are also a great time to go “golf

cart cruising”. The cooler air feels great after the hot afternoon sun. As always, please remember to obey stop signs and signal your intent to turn. And of course, make sure the person behind the wheel is a licensed driver. If you are heading out on an extended vacation, secure your home before you depart. Double-check and make sure you’ve locked ALL your doors and windows. Check your utilities and especially your air conditioning unit. Seek the help of a neighbor or friend to watch your place. If you are leaving a vehicle behind, make sure it is also locked. While much of this is common sense,

police officers over the years have told me of many instances where a door or window was missed, leading to the inevitable theft of valuables. “ An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Finally, don’t forget we have two fun activities planned by our entertainment committee during June and August. The excitement never stops here in Del Tura. Please be safe and healthy whatever you do. From my vantage point, it’s just another day in paradise! Dave Adams HOA President

also become endangered, so while they don’t know what it is they have stirred up, there is someone who believes they should be eliminated. Decker’s wife Rina appears to also be in danger so she has also become involved in helping them locate clues as Pete won’t let her be by herself until the case is solved. Good read! Enjoy!

Plumbing

Peter Decker has retired from the LAPD after thirty years working as a homicide detective. He and his wife Rina have relocated to a small town in upstate New York to the town of Greenbury to be closer to their children and grandchildren. When Pete retired he was a lieutenant and now has joined the small police department in Greenbury as a detective, and he is finding the changes in his job now as to what he did in LA somewhat boring, but then the action begins. First he and his partner, a young man recently graduated from Harvard and very wealthy to boot, are summoned to the local cemetery where things have happened at a mausoleum. Decker and his new partner Tyler McAdams begin to check

things out and discover a robbery from the mausoleum. Then, during the investigation they are called to a murder scene of a young female student from the local college. The plot thickens and Decker finds his adrenaline flowing again as he is now working an active case like in the “old days”. Then a second murder occurs when a man they are looking into in connection with the female murder is also murdered. There is a huge difference in age between the partners and a vast difference in economic status as well, but they begin to gel as a team and start to make some headway. As they follow leads things become more complex, adding an international flavor to the investigation and they need to uncover the “client” who was the recipient of the illegal goods garnered by the two deceased. Their lives

I need to say right up front that I have not been a “died in the wool” fan of James Patterson, unlike many of my reader friends. Well, this one grabbed me right away and kept me reading. NYPD Red based in Manhattan has a new case on its hands, when a movie starlet is killed while attending a movie premiere and a necklace valued in the millions is stolen. Investigators, Detective Zach Jordan and his partner, Kylie MacDonald are assigned to the case. While pursuing “who done

it” killers they go from celebrity penthouses to the criminal underworld. Early on they meet with Leopold Bassett and his brother, Maxwell Bassett - jeweler to the stars. The brothers have a business in design and sales of high priced jewelry items and Max created the missing piece of jewelry. Kylie’s estranged ( drug addict) husband Spence is missing and that is another bag of tricks. While she pursues her missing husband she ends up in Las Vegas. Pursing his whereabouts to his location leads to the occurrence of another murder. Murder continues but Zach and Kylie don’t give up in their search for justice.

Naturally you need to read this book for yourself to find out what everything is all about...

Don’t Let Your Investments Take A “Vacation” It’s summer again – time for many of us to take a break and possibly hit the open road. But even if you go on vacation, you won’t want your investments to do the same – in summertime or any other season. How can you help make sure your portfolio continues to work hard for you all year long? Here are a few suggestions: • Avoid owning too many “low growth” investments. As you know, different investments have different characteristics and can help you in different ways. For example, you typically own stocks because you want them to grow in value so that you can eventually sell them for a profit. Other investments, such as certificates of deposit (CDs), provide you with a regular source of income and stability of principal – two valuable contributions to your portfolio. However, investments like CDs don’t offer much in the way of growth. So if you own too many of them, you might be slowing your progress toward your important financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement. You can maximize the productivity of your portfolio by owning a variety of investments – domestic stocks, international stocks, corporate bonds, U.S. Treasury securities, CDs and more. How much of each investment should you own? The answer depends on a variety of fac tors, including your age, income, risk tolerance, family situation and specific objectives. Over time, your ideal investment mix may change, but you’ll likely need at least some growth potential at every stage of your life.

Don’t let your portfolio go “unsupervised.” Your investment portfolio can be subject to “drift” if left alone for extended time periods. In fact, without your making any moves at all, your portfolio can move in directions that may not be favorable to you. Suppose you think your holdings should be made up of 70% stocks, but due to strong gains, your stocks now make up 80% of your portfolio. This develop- ment could lead to a risk level that feels uncomfortably high to you. That’s why you should review your portfolio at least once a year, pos- sibly with the help of a financial professional, to check your progress and make adjustments as needed.

• Don’t stop at the nearest “resting place.” Some people hope that if they can get that one “winner,” they will triumph in the investment arena. But the ability to “get rich quick” is much more of a myth than a reality. True investment success typically requires patience, persistence and the resilience to continue investing even during market downturns.

In other words, investing is a long-term endeavor, and you need a portfolio that reflects this reality. The investment moves you make today may pay off for you decades from now. You need to establish your goals and keep them constantly in mind as you invest. And you will never really reach the end of your investment journey, because you’ll need to make choices and manage your portfolio throughout your retirement years. Hopefully, you will enjoy a pleasant vacation sometime this summer. But your investment portfolio shouldn’t take time off.

Mister Fix-It By Jim Stenzel Over the years I’ve become quite aware that many homes here do not have gutters. For the vast majority of us that did not purchase our homes new, I can assure you that this was not how your home was delivered and set up! So, why were the gutters removed? The only explanation that seems to fit is that the owners got tired of cleaning debris out of their gutters, or didn’t do it frequently enough to keep the downspouts clear so that the gutters backed up during rains. I’ve seen many cases of backed-up gutters leading to deterioration and rotting of eaves, or even roof leaks. Perhaps there is a line of thought reasoning that since our homes have no basements/ foundations, there is no point in channeling water away from the house. I think there are compelling reasons to keep your gutter

system in working order, or even upgrading it. Here are some common problems I’ve observed as I’ve worked under the homes in our community: openings in the vapor barrier (sometimes numerous, sometimes large); steel I-beams that are severely rusted; support piers (blocks) that are not touching the I-beams; tie-downs that have rusted away. In many cases, the ground is damp/wet under these homes, or shows signs of having been flooded in the past. Extreme dampness under your home mixed with a compromised vapor barrier can lead to increased

humidity and moldy odors in your home, possibly degradation of your floors. Extreme

dampness of the soil hastens the deterioration of your tie-down anchors. Standing water under your home can lead to uneven settling of your support piers so that some may no longer be doing their job in supporting your home. Over time, water seeping under your home can move sand as well, making your crawlspace even tighter to work under. Some homes here are so low to the ground, it is necessary to dig shallow depressions under support beams in order to get past them. Of course, the grading of the land your home sits on

has a lot to do with water getting under your home, but the situation is exacerbated significantly when all your roof water falls directly next to your skirting instead of being directed away from your house by a properly functioning gutter/downspout system. This is especially important if you have a home like mine, with a crawlspace that is below grade (whoever planned the homes to be situated like this should have their head examined). If you want to absolutely minimize such issues, and notice that your gutters overflow during heavy rains, you may want to consider having the gutters replaced with larger (deeper) gutters with correspondingly larger downspouts. This should assure that even during heavy rains, water is being directed away from your home as well as it can.

Meet Your Neighbor

Bette Ewing Cheney, HOA Board Member

By Sue Dunigan One of the best things about living in Del Tura Golf & Country Club is all our wonderful neighbors and their lives impacting our own as we interact within our community. It is so interesting to learn about where they have come from and the things that they have done. I know you will enjoy this brief interview with Bette and understand a bit more why she gives so freely of her time and energy to make life better for all of us. I asked Bette to share whatever she would like to the questions presented and the following are her quick responses done with the flare of her warm and friendly style.

Bette Ewing Cheney, HOA Board Member

1. What would you like to share about your Marriage and Family? I was married to Doug Cheney in Ocala, FL in 2001. I have two children (son and daughter) and five grand kids.

Specializing In Floria Rooms, Acrylic Windows And All Screening Including Pool Cages and Garage Screen Sliders

2. Your Education and/or Career? My career was as a High School language arts teacher.

3. How did you discovered Del Tura Country Club? When did you move to Del Tura? I have lived in Del Tura three years. I was unhappy living in Ocala because there were very few activities and social opportunities for retirees. My husband and I watched the Del Tura website video and were impressed. I fell in love with this community when we visited. Since I love people and activities Del Tura was the perfect fit. 4. What position do you have on the HOA Board? How long is your term of service for? I am one of the Board of Directors and the term is for two years. I want to help make decisions and do the work necessary to improve all aspects of the life of our community. 5. What activities have you been involved with and what makes you want to spend so much time and effort serving our community? I volunteered my first summer to work coffee along with Sandy Boykin and spent eighteen months doing coffees. I also took residents on bus tours for about twelve months. I am the FMO chairperson for Del Tura and chair the Entertainment Committee planning dances and shows in our Starlight Ballroom from June to April each season. Without volunteers to organize and help out, This ad is 3 9/16” x 2 ¼”

there wouldn’t be any events, clubs or group activities here in Del Tura. I always volunteer to help others who are chairing events. It’s fun! 6. Is there a particular activity here in Del Tura that you would encourage others to be involved with? I enjoy Tuesday morning coffees because I can chat with so many of our wonderful residents. Try it---you will like it! Those of us who have served on boards anywhere and for whatever type of organization or community--- fully understand the hours and energy it requires to make things happen. We are so blessed here in Del Tura to have people like Bette and all our other board members who willing give of their time and resources. I know that when you take the opportunity to reach out and thank Bette and each one of our board members---your thoughtfulness is appreciated. Each one of us, as neighbors, volunteers and friends are what makes our community “ZING” and each of us bring our own unique “BLING” to it all. As you are reading this issue of The Tower I sincerely hope you are having a great summer and that you are thinking of what activity you might like to be apart of and/or what area you would like to volunteer for. By Elaine Schnur Movie night has proved to be such a great success that we will continue it during the summer months. On June 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Starlight ballroom we will be showing HIDDEN FIGURES. It is a story of the American dream and the untold story of the black women mathematicians who helped win the space race. Unlike the interest shown by our Residents for movie night, we have very little traffic in our video library during the dog days of July and August. Therefore we have decided not to open the video library during this time period. If anyone would like a movie during this timeframe please contact me and I will arrange to have it for you.

We will remain open during the month of June, so come get your movies on any Saturday between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. Our latest movies include: LA LA LAND MANCHESTER BY THE SEA

Restaurant Review Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen

By Dave Adams When you think of the word “Cheddar” I suspect you think about cheese. But, truth be told, there’s nothing cheesy about this delightful restaurant. An easy ride, it’s located just off the I-75 “Alico Road” exit at 10040 University Plaza Drive, less than a half hour from Del Tura. As their name implies, this delightful restaurant takes pride in creating their dishes from “scratch” using natural ingredients cooked to order. They got their start in 1979, and today due to their commitment to quality and

They do serve beer and wine and have a full bar stocked with your favorite drinks, as well as the usual soft drinks, iced tea etc. As for the food, it really is quite good, with a comprehensive menu that has something for everyone. From a nice sized appetizer list, to salads and full meals including sandwiches and complete dinners, there is literally something for every taste. On a personal note I had a full slab of ribs. They were large and meaty and had a nice easy sweet smoky flavor. And they literally fell off the bone. As an appetizer I had a cup of their potato and bacon soup and candidly, it was some of the best I’ve ever had. Next time (and there WILL be a next time) I’ll order the large crock. My wife Nancy had the Citrus Miso Glazed Salmon with broccoli and rice and said it was excellent.

fresh recipes, they employ more than twice as many cooks as other restaurants. Many of their slow cooked meals begin early in the morning. The atmosphere is family friendly. It’s comfortable and not overstated, similar to the setting at other establishments such as “Ruby Tuesday”, with similar prices. Hosts and wait staff are super friendly and we found the time between our order and food delivery to be quite comfortable. Suggestions regarding certain dishes were provided but not forced on us.

Desserts are also homemade and large enough for two to share. A word to the wise…Cheddar’s is popular! We arrived early (5:30pm) and had no trouble getting a table, but it was Friday, and by the time we left, there was a considerable wait. For more information, be sure to check out their web site at Cheddars.com. There are several Cheddars locations and since they are a “scratch” kitchen, they will ask for your zip code so they can give you the menu at the location you choose. They are open seven days a week from late morning

Restaurant Review Dowd’s Pub and Grill

By Dennis Cottini While perusing Pope John’s XXIII Thrift shop in a small strip mall on Tamiami Trail, south of Gladiolus, we spotted a small pub and immediately got hungry. Dowd’s is owned and operated by Megan and Steve Grish who previously owned the Castaway’s Bar on the beach for seventeen years. Megan is the chef and prepared the tastiest homemade

meatballs with marinara sauce. The beef sliders were also delicious. The food was so good we ordered more to freeze for quick dinners. Dowd’s features $5.00 appetizers from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. with mozzarella sticks, cheesy fries, onion rings, corn fritters, potato skins, pub bread, macaroni ‘n cheese wedges and fried ravioli. I’ll bet all is as good as the food we enjoyed. Happy Hour is from 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. close. $3.00 house wines, which were excellent along with $4 calls and $5.00 premiums. All day Saturdays are half price cheese pizzas and all day Sundays are .50cent wings, $2.00 Mimosas and $2.00 Bloody Marys. Mondays @ 5.00 p.m. are Texas Hold-em nights and cruise giveaways. Give Dowd’s a try when in the area.

Good Timers’ Singles Club News By Joyce Lienert “Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each.” – Henry David Thoreau A meeting of the Good Timers’ Singles Club was held on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. in the Poinciana room. There was a consensus among members the club will not meet for the summer months of June, July and August. Our next meet-

Reflections

“Lessons Learned from My Father’s Garden”

8-9/17

By Dianne J. Roderick My thoughts recently returned to my dad while we were on vacation in the neighborhood of my early childhood. As I sat relaxing on our daughter’s deck that overlooked her garden, my thoughts took me back to my childhood. Those thoughts were about all the time I spent trailing behind my dad helping him tend our vegetable garden. What patience he had! As a young child I never realized a garden could teach so many of life’s virtuous lessons. Sure, we appreciated the bountiful harvest it produced, but never realized then the commitment it took to produce those delicious vegetables. (I can still remember eating those luscious, red tomatoes right off the vine!) Working beside my Dad in our garden was much more than a physical task. It was precious quality time spent with the most important man in my life. Of course I didn’t realize at that young age, during those special times, Dad

was actually sharing the gifts he learned from his parents and grandparents. Dad may have inherited a green thumb, but the work and patience he put into that garden made it even greener! Those beautiful fall leaves would later become very useful in the spring as we prepared for our garden. Of course, when the fish scraps, coffee grinds and the yard clippings were added to the growing mound throughout the fall, that mulch pile grew into a huge mountain of fertilizer!

“It often happens to childrenand sometimes to gardeners-that they are given gifts of value of which they do not perceive until much later.” – Wayne Winterrowd Having a garden in those days was a necessity for many families. Many families in the neighborhood didn’t have their own backyard space and would come together to tend community gardens.

Many of our neighbors would put in time, before or after their regular jobs, to help each other out. Each of them came to help with a strong faith that their hard work would produce a plentiful harvest! Caring and sharing that’s what it was all about! I watched in amazement each year as those seedlings in our garden grew into hardy plants; tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, carrots, lettuce, squash. Each row, planted so evenly with love and patience by a man who had much more than an inherited green thumb. In my Dad’s garden I was taught many important life lessons. Little did I realize then the magnitude of each one, but as the years go by I am so very thankful for each one of them. Those little seeds grew into strong plants with lots of love and caring, as did I, and the precious time spent with my Dad will always be in my memory each time I find myself daydreaming in the garden. Happy Father’s Day, Daddy!

“Father’s are Wonderful People”

Submitted by Dianne J. Roderick

Father’s are wonderful people Too little understood, And we do not sing their praises As often as we should For, somehow, Father seems to be The man who pays the bills, While Mother binds up little hurts And nurses all our ills. And Father struggles daily To live up to “his image” As protector and provider And “hero of the scrimmage”. And perhaps that is the reason We sometimes, get the notion, That Father’s are not subject To the thing we call emotion, But if you look inside Dad’s heart, Where no one else can see

You’ll find he’s sentimental And as “soft” as he can be. But he’s so busy every day In the grueling race of life, He leaves the sentimental stuff To his partner and his wife. But Father’s are just wonderful In a million different ways, And they merit loving compliments And accolades of praise. For the only reason Dad aspires To fortune and success Is to make his family proud of him And to bring them happiness. And like Our Heavenly Father, He’s a guardian and a guide, Someone that we can count on To be always on our side. — By Helen Steiner Rice

And Then It Is Winter You know... time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is... the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise. How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is, my friends are retired and getting gray. They move slower and I see an older person

now. Some are in better and some are in worse shape then me, but I see the great change. Not like the ones I remember who were young and vibrant, but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we’d be. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And, taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it’s mandatory! Cause if I don’t on my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit. And so now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did! But, at least I know that though the winter has come, and I am not sure how long it will last, But this I know, that when it’s

over on this earth, it’s NOT over. A new adventure will begin. Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn’t done. But indeed there are many things I’m happy to have done. It’s all in a lifetime. So, if you’re not in your winter yet, let me remind you that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don’t put things off too long. Life goes by quickly so do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promises that you will see all the seasons of your life... so live for today and say all the things you want to your loved ones to remember... and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past “Life” is a gift to you. The way you live

your life is your gift to those who come after, so make it a fantastic one. Live it well! Enjoy today! Do something fun! Be happy! It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver. Live happy in this year and every year! Remember the following: Today is the oldest you’ve ever been, yet the youngest you’ll ever be, so, enjoy this day while it lasts. Your kids are becoming you. Going out is good... coming home is better! You forget names but it’s OK because other people forgot they even knew you! You realize you’re never going to be good at anything, especially golf. The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don’t care to do them anymore.

With a foundation of individualized support and high quality health care services, encouragement of independence, emphasis on freedom of choice, support of individuality, and protection of privacy, our residents enjoy a superior quality of life than they would living alone.

You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed... It’s called pre-sleep. You miss the days when everything worked with just an ON and OFF switch. You tend to use more four letter words... what? when? who? and where? Know that you can afford expensive jewelry, it’s not safe to wear it anywhere. You notice everything they sell in stores is sleeveless! What used to be freckles are now liver spots. Everybody whispers. You have three sizes of clothes in your closet, two of which you will never wear. But old is good in some things: Old Songs, Old Movies, and best of all, Old Friends! It’s “Not What You Gather, but What You Scatter” that tells what kind of life you have lived. Author Unknown

A Message from Save Our Strays. . . RAINBOW BRIDGE

This is for all of us who have ever lost a beloved pet. Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine. Our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals that have been ill and were old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days gone by. The animals are happy and content...except for one small thing, they miss someone very

special to them... the one who was left behind. They all run and play together until the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Bright eyes are intent and he/she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, legs carrying him/her faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands caress the beloved head and you look into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then, you cross Rainbow Bridge into Heaven together. Author Unknown

By Sherry Plisch Get Ready Now - Prepare Your Pets for Emergencies. Just as you would prepare for family emergency supply kit, think about the basics for survival particularly food and water, and the items listed below. Food: Get at least three days of food ready in an airtight, waterproof container. Water: Get three days of water for your pets, in addition to water for you and your family. Medicines and Medical Records: If your pet takes medications, keep an extra supply in a waterproof container. First Aid Kit: Cotton bandage rolls, tape and scissors, antibiotic ointment, flea and tick meds, gloves, alcohol and saline solu-

tion. The phone number of your vet should be included. Collar with ID tag, Harness and or Leash: Make sure you have your Rabies tag and ID and a backup leash or collar. Important Documents: Keep your pet’s registration, adoption papers, vaccination documents and medical records in a clear plastic bag. Crate or Pet Carrier: If you need to evacuate in an emergency,

take your pets and animals with you, provided that it is practical to do so. Sanitary Needs: Include litter and litter box, newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags. A Photo of You and Your Pet: This will help identify your pet if you get separated and allows others to assist you in identifying your pet. Give detailed information about breed, age, sex, color and distinguishing markings or characteristics. Familiar Items: Put favorite toys, treats and bedding in your kit. These reduce stress for your pet. These recommendations come from the Humane Society, ASPCA, American Kennel Club and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard to make the concert a success. A reminder that if you like to sing, rehearsals for their annual holiday concert will begin again on September 19, 6:30 pm in the Starlight Ballroom. If you enjoy singing, come join them! Everyone is welcome.
