VETERAN’S CORNER
The flags are stowed. The bunting is put away for another year. And the fireworks are all expended (hopefully). For some, the patriotism of July 4 th gets put away until the next time but not so for our nation’s veterans. Just as their collective commitment to our country had no expiration date, their love of country is a constant. Be thankful that it is Too many Americans grow up imbued with an entitlement of their rights and too few recognize any responsibilities to improve the nation. Their sense of patriotism gets put away with all the trappings of July 4 without any sense of what we commemorate.
By Steve Banko
Every da y in Am erica, we ha ve no t ju st th e ability but the responsibility to make patriotism an action word. Veterans’ posts all over the country translate the camaraderie earned in military service into positive action to continue their legacy. When I was younger, I had little trouble transitioning from, combat service to civic commitment. I spearheaded the first two visits of the traveling Vietnam memorial to the Buffalo area.
We established a Memorial Day luncheon to raise money for college scholarships for the children of Vietnam veterans that donated more than $50,000 to provide futures to our kids in the name of those often denied a chance at a future. We dedicated space in a county park and planted a tree for each of the 268 sons of Western New York who died in Vietnam. We raised tens of thousands of dollars to erect a fitting memorial on Buffalo’s waterfront to the service, suffering, and sacrifice of our brothers and sisters.
But that was then and this is now. If the Del Tura veterans’ cadre is anything like me, we are past the point of doing big things to renew our pride in our country. The programs that haven been conducted on Memorial Day and Veterans Day are first-rate and a source of pride for all of
us. But there are still possibilities for patriotic action here in the fourth quarter of our lives.
FOR INSTANCE:
• We could plant a tree whenever one of our number passes, thereby honor our commitment to our fellow vets and our commitment to leaving the planet a little better than we found it;
• We could sponsor a patriotic essay contest for the students at North Fort Myers High;
• We could collect food for the Harry Chapin Food Bank;
• We might commission a banner for the North Fort Myers high school gym that says something along the line of “Del Tura Vets Support the Red Devils.”
These are just a few ideas that spring to mind. Smarter veterans than I could come up with other, better ideas. That’s why it would be good to get together and talk about how we can extend our patriotism beyond a handful of national holidays. If you would like to share some thoughts, feel free to email me at stbanko3@roadrunner.com.

We are currently asking for assistance with the Resident thanksgiving dinner. We are looking for a chairperson and volunteers. They can contact any board member for information. It was brought to our attention by a law enforcement office at the last Tuesday Coffee Meeting that it is against Florida State Law to drive a golf cart out of Del Tura... whether on the road OR on the sidewalk. Thanks

WONDERFUL 4TH OF JULY
By Lisa Bellanca
What a wonderful 4th of July in Del Tura
The weather cooperated by not raining on us, although the heat was a little excessive.
I would like to thank a few people on behalf of the HOA.
A big shout out to the guys that coordinated and ran the PUTT & PITCH contest.
Thank you to Dave Ross, Forney Johnson, Jim Hooper, and Frank Bellanca. They stood out in the heat and ran this event from 10am until noon. I would also like to thank Butch in the pro shop for collaborating with us and allowing us to use the putting green.
PUTT & PITCH CONTEST Winners:
• Men’s Pu tt. Of th e 73 pu tts ma de, th e winner, Steve Baney, was only 4.25” away from the hole and won $73.00.
• Women’s Putt was won by Lori Angelilli, who was 21.5” away from the cup, and won $65.00.
When it came to Chipping, Tom Spino was the men’s winner, landing the ball only 11.5” away from the target, winning $46.00
Dorinda Doyle was the women’s Chipping winner, and came within 13.5” of the cup, and as a result won $19.00.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this annual event.
The HOA provided FREE ICE CREAM in the form of Dr umsticks, Fa t Bo y Ic e Cr eam Sandwiches, and Fudge Pops to everyone who stopped up in the Starlight Ballroom between noon and 2pm. This stop is always a good option. This break allows residents and their guests an opportunity to get out of the sun and heat and time to enjoy the air conditioning while eating a cold treat. The HOA served approximately 150 Ice Cream treats.
Retirees must identify and manage income sources
During your working years, you know where your income is coming from because you’re working.
But once you retire, you’ll have to identify your income sources, know how much you can expect from them and know how to manage them to help support a retirement that could last two or three decades.
So, where will your retirement income come from? And what decisions will you need to make about these income sources?
CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:
• Retirement accounts – If you’ve regularly contributed to an IRA and a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, you likely have accumulated substantial amounts of money in these accounts — but during your retirement, you’ll need to start tapping into them. In fact, once you turn 73, you’re required to start taking withdrawals from some of your retirement accounts, with the amount determined by your age and account balance. You could take out more than these amounts (technically called required minimum distributions, or RMDs) but you can’t take less without incurring penalties. Many people take out 4% of their balance each year, and this guideline may be reasonable, but everyone’s situation is different. So, you’ll need to weigh various factors including your age, health and other sources of income before deciding on an appropriate withdrawal rate.
• Social Security – You can start collecting Social Security at age 62, but your payments will be much higher if you wait until your full retirement age, which will be between 66 and 67. And your benefits will reach the maximum amount if you wait until 70 before collecting. So, your decision on when to take your benefits will depend on whether you can afford to wait, and for how long. In making this choice, you’ll also need to consider your health and your family history of longevity. And if you’re married, you may want to factor in spousal benefits when deciding when you should collect Social Security. A spouse can receive either their own benefit, based on their work record, or up to 50% of their spouse’s benefit, whichever is greater. So, if one spouse has a much higher benefit, it may make sense for that spouse to delay taking Social Security as long as possible so that both spouses can receive bigger payments.
• Earned income – Even if you have retired from one career, it doesn’t mean you can never receive any earned income again. If you have specific skills that can translate to part-time work or a consulting arrangement, you might want to consider reentering the work force in this way. With the added income, you might be able to afford delaying Social Security, and you would still be eligible to contribute to an IRA.
• Supplemental lifetime income – There aren’t many guarantees in the financial and investment worlds — but one of them is the income from a fixed annuity, which can be structured to provide you with a lifetime income stream. Annuities aren’t for everyone, however, and they do involve penalties for early withdrawals and lack of protection from inflation.
By learning all you can about your potential retirement income sources, and by understanding how to manage this income to your best advantage, you can help yourself achieve a comfortable — and more rewarding — retirement.

18 HOLE WOMEN’S GOLF
By Tammi Carleton
It is with profound sadness to acknowledge the recent passing of one of our friends and league members, Deb Gonsalves. Deb was a wonderful lady… gracious, fun, beautiful, caring, selfless… there are not enough words to accurately describe just how special she was to all of us and to our community that she so dearly loved. Deb’s passing has left a void in Del Tura and we are all so fortunate to have had her in our lives for as long as we did. To Deb’s husband, John, and their family, we offer our heartfelt condolences. We will always remember Deb and the good times we shared.

REFLECTIONS
“Anticipation of Summer Adventures”
They say the fun of the journey is in the planning of anticipated adventures. I know it is probably different for each of us. I think it has a lot to do with the number of times you travel, or an individual’s definition of adventure. For some of us it could be planning a trip abroad on a beautiful ship, and for others it could be taking the car train to visit family up north. Whatever the reason, the important thing is that the journey speaks to our hearts. If planning the trip continues to give you good feelings as you prepare your agenda then you’re headed in the right direction.
Our adventure this summer will take us up north to visit and celebrate with family. We have a wedding and a 70th Anniversary party to attend and I look forward to every minute of it. It’s not often we have the opportunity to visit with family and having them all together is a very special bonus. It will definitely be a very special time! A time to celebrate the new, and a time to reminice about the happy family times of the past. Lots of “toasting” to the new, “best wishes” for the future, and always a “special toast” to the ones that paved the way, leaving us with so many heartfelt memories.
I read this quote recently, “Some people see more in a walk on the beach than others see in a trip around the world.” Well, that went right to my heart for many reasons. Although I have never been around the world, we have been on many wonderful trips that took us on many adventurous journeys. Believe me, they were, without a doubt, enjoyable and so appreciated.
By Dianne J. Roderick
The memories of those trips will forever be treasured within my heart. However, as beautiful as they were, nothing will ever compare to the love of family and dear friends who are also family!
There is one powerful reason that the above quote tugged at my heartstrings… I grew up near the ocean and it will always be a big part of my soul. To me, a trip around the world is like taking a walk on the beach, leisurely wading in the salt water, collecting sea shells, smelling the seaweed , and letting the gentle breeze cool you with a fine mist of salty spray. Here, my dear friends, is where my roots and heart live. Where the beginning of my life began, deep rooted in the paths of where my past lies… along the same pathways that my parents and grandparents walked many years ago. And now the younger generation of our family continue to make footprints in the sand and walk the same pathways making beautiful memories for the next generation.
The most important part of this quote is how it speaks to me about “family,” the most important people in our lives. Although I may never take a physical trip around the world, I have been blessed to have my world around me…my family and dear friends are my trip around the world. So as we prepare for our summer adventure with our family I can tell you that the excitement is building and the anticipation is truly speaking to my heart.
May the rest of your summer be healthy & happy…
Sincerely, Dianne

A Tail Two Make Ewe Think By Mary DeJoseph
Did ewe ever confuse a word or too, Two stop and think what knot two chews? That word does knot make any cents. Maybe eye should change the tents. This is a tail too make ewe think Maybe…just maybe…eye should knot drink!!
Hear it is!: A Night’s Tail
A night inn shiny meddle armor
Hoo tries two protect his king’s hi honor
Where’s plate two stop a deadly arrow
Knot two bee among yore sorrow.
His quest: too shield the young and week
A loan he travels, to meat this feet. Two protect the land with strength and mite, From rival thieves who think there write. Awl two gain a prior’s blessing
Bee Four he rests two partake in festing. He humbly sheds his heavy vest, Two relax and enjoy his well-urned wrest. Weave read and learned this old-thyme tail Of night’s who ware they’re heavy male. These words were chosen two make ewe think Bee Four ewe swallow that final drink!
