TWHA FINAL REMINDER FOR 2014
1/15 10/14
The annual meeting and election of officers will be held on Monday, January 12, 2015. Those attending the meeting, and who have paid their 2014 dues, are eligible to vote. They will be given a ballot. We request that you do not mark your ballots immediately. The candidates for the position of Director will be asked to introduce themselves to give the membership the opportunity to meet them in person. If you will not be attending this meeting, fill in, sign, and return the proxy that was included in the annual letter. If you have not paid your dues for 2014, please do so before the annual meeting. Dues are $15.00 per household. Checks to TWHA (Tara Woods Homeowners Association); cash is also accepted. As of this article, we still do not have an applicant for the position
of Recording Secretary. Please think it over and help out your Homeowners Association. Contact me or Diane Burns if interested. I have been asked several times about new homeowners and dues. Quite a number of years ago the Tara Woods management was paying the first year of homeowner’s dues. After several years, it was decided that they would no longer have that program. Then, the TWHA decided that they would give complimentary membership to new homeowners. About 2 years ago the Board decided that this was a financial burden to the Association. Now, new homeowners are strongly encouraged to join the TWHA. If there are any questions on the above, please contact me. Celeste Perre, 731-7146

From the President It’s been one year since the debut of the newspaper format of The Columns. It’s been a year of learning and transition, but we’ve come a long way since last January. The biggest change was acquiring a new editor after Donna Phillips got us off to a great start, and then retired. Barbara Roland has done a terrific job of filling her shoes and maintaining the integrity of the paper, while balancing the demands of the publisher with her contributors’ wishes. We look forward to an even smoother year ahead. Thank you to Linda McKay for extending her tenure as Activities Director through December. The Board is conscientiously looking for an Activities Director for the coming year. If you would be willing to serve on the Activities Committee, please let me or Frank Millette know. I’ve already heard from a couple of people, but more hands make light work. January brings lots of opportunities for participation in community activities here in Tara Woods. Sound and Lighting is of-
fering a great show of music and comedy on January 10th. Tickets for this event were selling fast in December. I hope there are some seats left for the January- March snowbirds. The annual Caribbean cruise is booked and ready to sail and the Yard Sale, hosted by Shuffleboard, is on Saturday, January 31th. The Clubs are also meeting and tennis is holding a round-robin on Sunday, January 25th. The community phone directory will provide you with the names of the people in charge for these events. Don’t miss out on all the “Happening’s” in January. The Annual Meeting of the Association on January 12th should prove to be an interesting one, with a race for the open Board Member position bringing two candidates to the fore. I hope the members in good standing of the Association will take their voting responsibilities seriously and attend this meeting, or use your proxy, to vote. As a homeowner in Tara Woods, you are considered to be a member of the Homeowner’s Association. To maintain the privileges that come with your membership, please pay
2014 DAY OF CARING Thank you Tara Woods residents for this year’s contributions and your continuous support to the Day of Caring Annual Fund Drive. As of December 2nd, the total contributions received from our residents AMOUNTED TO $2,836. Contributions received through November 15th by the four communities involved were delivered to the following charities: THE FORT MYERS SOUP KITCHEN (Communities COOPERATIVE), HISPANIC SERVICES OF CATHOLIC CHARITIES, FORT MYERS RESCUE MISSION, AND THE SALVATION ARMY. EACH RECEIVED $3,500. Thanks to you, our donations made it possible for many needy people to have a decent Thanksgiving Day
meal. Donations that will be received in December will again be divided equally and delivered to the above-mentioned charities for feeding needy families during the Christmas holiday. Besides Tara Woods, the other communities involved in the Day of Caring fund drive were: Heritage Village, Lake Fairways, and Pine Lakes. Again, “THANK YOU ALL” for a job well done. We wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season. Your Day of Caring Committee: John and Irene D’Amico
your dues of $15.00/year/household. Celeste has requested that you pay your membership dues before the January 12th meeting, but dues will be taken that night if you want to vote. She is making it very clear that dues paid for 2014 only entitle you to vote at that meeting. You have no further vote on issues that may arise during the year if you do not pay your dues for 2015. Contact Celeste if you are not clear on this issue. Good luck to those who have made New Year’s resolutions. I gave up a long time ago, but it does make you stop and think what might make you a better person in the coming year. Here’s a suggestion as sung by Glen Campbell in his song, “Less of Me” in 1968: Let me be a little kinder, Let me be a little blinder, to the faults of those about me, Let me praise a little more. Let me be when I am weary, just a little bit more cheery; think a little more of others and a little less of me. Happy New Year!

Congratulations to all Tara Woods, the Federation of Manufactured Home Owners (FMO) members, we have been honored with the PRESIDENT’S CLUB CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT for last year. It was a pleasure to receive this plaque award on your behalf at the November 2014 FMO District meeting. To become a member of the President’s Club, the community achieved 37% membership. We are one of 7 parks out of 200 in District 7 to get this award this year. FMO is the only non-profit consumer advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the rights of over 1.2 million man-
ufactured homeowners in the state of Florida. Many of our resources target Florida legislators, making them aware of the problems that face homeowners and persuading them to affect positive legislation that will protect our members. An example of being recognized by our politicians is the guest speaker at our November 2014 District 7 meeting was Florida Representative Ken Roberson. Because of your support, Tara Woods is becoming recognized by outsiders. I recently received a call from a nearby park representative asking if we would meet with them in January to help shore up their FMO efforts.

SUNSHINE AND SYMPATHY Condolences to the friends and family of John Discepolo, to his wife Maggie who not only lost her husband, but also her brother-in-law and her sister all within a very short span of time; to Sharon Boehlke on the death of her mother, and to Norma Jones on the death of her sister. A speedy recovery is wished for Mike Grigas and others in the community who are struggling with health issues. Sunshine wishes the entire community a New Year filled with good health – and a year free of doctors, labs, x-rays, MRI’s and all that other awful stuff. Stay well! Nancy Wuebbeler, 288-5778

TENNIS NEWS Tennis Association Meeting The Tara Woods Tennis Association held their first meeting of the season on Sunday, November 23rd. One item of discussion was the Round Robin. It was decided that hosting the dinner and also taking care of the courtside snacks could be handled by two different people/groups. Preparing the dinner and also taking care of the courtside snacks are two different tasks; separating them would make it easier for our volunteers to enjoy the day. Linda and Warren Engel were thanked for setting up the pairings for the November Round Robin. We hope to have more tennis players at the January Round Robin. Fred Puhlfuerst was thanked for his work on the tennis courts, including, among other things, the repair of the awnings on the
court benches. Fred mentioned that the tennis courts will be resurfaced in the summer of 2015. We have a new water fountain by the rest rooms. Replacement bottles for the water cooler are kept in the storage room and extra paper cups can be found in the tennis cabinet. Kathy Rafferty will clean and sanitize the water trays on the coolers. Tennis players were reminded to use only the unpressurized balls in the ball machine; the machine balls will be replaced as needed. Please do not put used game balls in the ball machine. Fred Puhlfuerst stepped down as Vice-President, but will continue to help with maintenance when he can. Anyone interested in the position should contact any Tennis Association officer. The Nominating Committee for the 2015-2016 tennis season
will be appointed at the January meeting. These individuals will submit names of candidates for the Tennis Association officers to be elected at the March meeting. Anyone interested in being on the Nominating Committee should contact Nancy Schoeppner. The next Tennis Association Meeting will be held on Sunday, January 25th, starting at 5:45 PM. Round Robin The November 23rd Round Robin had only 12 people signed up to play tennis and no one had volunteered to serve dinner that day. Despite the low turnout, based on the comments that were heard, it seems like everyone had a good time playing tennis. There was no Round Robin scheduled in December. The next Round Robin is set
for Sunday, January 25th. The sign-up sheet will be posted on the Tennis Bulletin Board in early January. The more people who sign up to play, the more variety of pairings we can arrange. We hope to see a lot of you signing up to play tennis for this Round Robin. The dinner for the January 25th Round Robin is being hosted by Arlene Greene and Janell Wissler; the courtside snacks are being handled by Dottie Hargrove. Appreciation Weekend There will again be three separate tennis games for Appreciation Weekend, which is scheduled for February 27-28. There will be the usual “Hole in the Board” game, which is run by Warren and Linda Engel. Janet and George Daly will again be having the “Bowling” ten-
nis game. The “Hit the Chairs” game will be run by Janice and George Johnston this year. So, come out and try your luck to see how well you do at the games. You do not have to be a tennis player to enjoy these games. They are a lot of fun! We need workers to help run these games, so please consider giving us a hand. We are asking for only one hour of your time. So, if you’re asked to help out, please say “Yes”. Workers get extra tickets for a chance at prizes at Saturday night’s festivities. Workers are also invited to the pizza party in March. Tennis Lessons We will again be having tennis lessons to help beginners improve their tennis game. We will have tennis lessons on Saturdays at 12:00 Noon for anyone who is interested. Please

Tennis Leagues Women’s League The Women’s SWIFT League consists of eight teams, two of which are from Tara Woods. The other six teams in the league are made up of two teams from Herons Glen, and one team each from Lake Fairways, Pine Lakes, Sabal Springs, and Six Lakes. The standings after four weeks of very competitive tennis with the other communities in the SWIFT League show the Tara Woods Angels in first place, with 20 wins and only 4 losses. The Angels have been very consistent; their outcome so far has been 5 wins and only 1 loss every time they have played. The Tara Woods Jewels are in a close second place with 17
wins and 7 losses. The Jewels lead the third place team by two wins. Congratulations to both teams on this great record so early in the season. It’s great to see both Tara Woods teams leading the league. – Linda Engel Men’s League Red League The Red Team is presently in third place out of five teams in the league; we are doing much better than last year! We would like to thank everyone for their great support, and we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! – Glen Fisher White League We have had four matches so far this year with ever-increasing results. We are no super stars,
but the energy level and team spirit cannot be beaten. The beer is still cold and enjoyed after each match. Fan support has been tremendous with only standing room available at our last game. I am thinking of charging admission to these matches and providing popcorn. Check the Tennis Bulletin Board for our league standings and for the location of our next match. – Gerry Gagnon Blue League On Thursday, December 4th, our Tara Woods Tigers played against the team from Lake Fairways. We won 4 sets and lost 2. We now have 14 wins and 10 losses for the season so far. – Dale Holat Submitted by Linda Engel 9/15

A NEW TWIST ON VALENTINE’S DAY AT TARA WOODS! When Valentine’s Day rolls around each February 14th, we are reminded through hints from our spouse, or the bombardment of Valentine advertising, that it’s time to show our love by buying a valentine card, a sweet treat, or dinner out for our loved one. Have you ever noticed the holiday has become an activity for couples and grade school children? There seems to be a group that is left out during this “Hallmark Holiday”. So, to be all-inclusive, and to add a fun twist to this holiday, we have decided to switch things up and have a party for singles, couples, and friends alike. Everyone set the Date for Cupid’s Carnival on February 14, 2015! This event promises to offer fun for everyone who attends. Here are a few carnival highlights that will be offered. • An open baked potato bar with many original yummy toppings to choose from • An open taco bar with all the fixings. The food bars will be open all evening so you can eat whenever you choose!
•
Buy a heart paddle to play a fun paddle game that will be played throughout the evening for cash prizes. ($5.00 a paddle) No 50/50 at this event. • Gather your spouse and friends and snap some romantic or cheesy pictures. Many fun props will be available. (for a small fee). • Have a sweet tooth? No problem! Take a stroll around our sweet street and see if you can win baked goods or candy of your choice (for a small fee). • Take a chance at shooting an arrow at cupid for a prize (for a small fee). All of these activities will be available to play all evening. • Besides these on-going activities, Dave Paugh will serenade us with his one-man show for some great dancing music. EN GUARD Tara Woods has some of the friendliest Gate Attendants in North Fort Myers. What better way to enter our community than to be warmly greeted by the Guard at the Gate. His wave and friendly smile help to make the day. They are the first greeters to our visitors, repairmen, delivery men, etc., cordially welcoming them to Tara Woods. How often have you wondered who they are? Our Gate Attendants (full time) are shown below; some of them have agreed to write a little about themselves so that we may get to know them better. As you enter our community, please stop and say hello to them the next time you go through. Give them a salute and a Thank You for a job well done.
. ROBERT ANDERSON Hi, my name is Robert Anderson. I grew up on Long Island, New York. I spent about 10 plus years in Texas before moving to Southwest Florida in 1998. I have enjoyed working as a gate attendant here in Tara Woods since 2001 and meeting so many of my fellow residents here
ROBERT GLANDORF My name is Robert Glandorf and I have lived in Tara Woods for almost 10 years. I have been employed as a gate attendant for the last 5 years. We are originally from Ohio and traveled before settling here permanently. I love to RV and I like to play golf.
BOB GOODING Hi, my name is Bob Gooding. I’m from Commack, Long Island, NY, and have been living in Tara Woods with my wife, Flora, since 1989. We live at Lot 510 on Darwin Street. I’m a WWII veteran and served 8 years in the U.S. Navy. I worked for the Ducon Co. as quality assurance inspector, and then as plant manager in the manufacturing of Pollution Control Equipment for heavy industry. I have enjoyed working as a gate guard at Tara Woods for 16 years, and I still go like the energizer rabbit
BILL HAMPTON I just enjoy living in Tara Woods. BILL LYFORD Hi, my name is Bill Lyford. I lived in Illinois for 50 years before coming to Florida. My wife Nancy and I have been a resident of Tara Woods for 19 years and I have been a gate attendant for 5 of those years.
WILLIAM SANDELL Late-night gate attendant. ED SIMKO Hi, my name is Ed Simko. I have been working at the guard house since September 2003. I enjoy working the gate; it is my way of meeting everyone who lives in Tara Woods – either by seeing you as you go through the gate or by taking your calls for your visitors. I am still an avid Pittsburgh fan and ex-Steeler season ticket holder. I will always follow the Steelers even though down here it is hard to watch them with the three Florida teams always on. I do manage to go to most of the Pirates spring training games every year up in Bradenton or elsewhere in southwest Florida with my brother. If I don’t see you at the gate, possibly I will see you when I pick up your aluminum cans, or when I deliver your Columns, or if not then at the Pancake Breakfast.

TREASURES OF TARA
Have you seen a `57 turquoise Chevy being driven by a fun-loving couple, named Paul and Evelyn Loud? What a car and what a couple!!! Evelyn was raised in a family with 11 children; she is next to
the youngest. In this loving family Evie learned how to share, help, direct and generously give of herself. She had to learn all this to survive! We, of course, at Tara Woods (TW) have benefited from these skills. Both Paul and Evie were raised and lived all their lives in Massachusetts. Paul had one older brother, who is now deceased, but he was engulfed by Evie’s extended family of 90. The original 11 (and children) still get together and celebrate their love of family and life. Evie has 4 children from her first marriage, 1 boy and 3 girls. Paul also has 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls. They met through mutual friends and were married 29 years ago in Las Vegas. Many family and friends were there to celebrate with them.
Paul, as we all know, is a hard worker and for 51 years he was a heavy equipment operator in Boston. He worked on the “Big Dig” and also a 9-mile sewerage treatment tunnel. The tunnel was 350 feet under the ocean, and they worked on it for 5 years and 3 months. At times he worked 7 days a week. You can understand how he deserves to relax now and drive that `57 Chevy around. Evie successfully worked for a local bank, Prudential Insurance Company, and finally retired from GE Credit Union. When not working, they enjoyed their 27 foot “Big Boat” and frequently cruised Boston Harbor and vicinity. They also built their own ranch home in Saugus, Mass., living there for many years. In this home, Evie
cared for Paul’s sick father until his death. In 2002 they found their home in TW on Darwin St. and became snow birds 2 years later. In the summer they go to their daughter’s home, where they have a Mother/Daughter apartment. They enjoy the built-in ground swimming pool and are visited by some of their 18 grandchildren (Evie 8, Paul 10). They share their talents and love of life with the New England Club. Evie has chaired the Craft Fair since 2009. They have been involved with Shuffleboard, and she was Membership Secretary on the TW Board. Paul’s health issues have slowed him down somewhat, but he now has a clean bill of health so watch out! They still frequently travel
and often cruise. They love the spirit, activities, and people of Tara Woods, and we sure love their generosity and enthusiasm. Thank you, Paul and Evie.
Keep cruisin’ in that Chevy. Mary Nothnagel

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB
1/15

The Tara Woods Computer Club has resumed free computer classes every Thursday at 10:30 AM in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. These are open to all residents and visitors. We review Computer Basics on the 1st and 3rd Thursday each month, with more Advanced Topics on the 2nd and 4th Thursday. The 5th Thursdays are general question and answer sessions. We won’t be meeting on Christmas or New Year’s Day, but will begin again on January 8th. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. This is a great time to learn the Basics. We are starting again at the very beginning and assume that you
know nothing about computers. We are still covering the essentials at this time, and will be learning about files, folders, and programs in January, and graphics programs and word processors in February. We are seeing new faces each meeting, so the group is growing. The Advanced Topics will cover all sorts of subjects, programs, and hardware, including Windows 8.1 and working with photos. Bring your laptop computer with you if you want to follow along (this is optional). Bring something to take notes with. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, so the scheduling is tentative. The next topic that will be covered is always posted on
the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Most stand on-their-own, and don’t require you to attend earlier ones. Each lesson is scheduled to last an hour, but tends to run over with questions from the members. Ask me any question at all, and I will try to answer it. Please call me with any questions or comments, 6520488. I can help you with any of your computer needs. I’m looking forward to seeing you

I believe everyone had a great time at the Fashion Show. The Models were Terrific! We “Thank” the ladies who gave us such a good show; the wigs and makeup added to make the event wonderful. I want to “Thank” everyone who helped with the event, as you all know it would not be possible without the people who VOLUNTEER. As I discussed at the event, very few people paid last year’s dues. Anyone wishing to pay their dues, please come to the January 10th meeting. Bring an envelope with $5.00 in it; include your name and telephone number on the outside of the envelope or give the envelope to Bev Bayer or Carol Shields at Bingo. Re-
member the Fashion Show is a free event made possible by the dues and monies collected at the Trash and Treasure. Even though everyone brings food or wine to the event, there is a cost for decorations, favors, and cheese and crackers all supplied by the Club. Please begin to collect items for the Trash and Treasure in March. We want to try to do a group outing to the Peace River Wildlife Center. All interested, please attend the January 10th meeting. Again, “Thanks” to ALL who made this year’s Fashion Show possible. Rachelle Dellarocca

What Can You Learn from the “Oracle of Omaha”? Warren Buffet, the “Oracle from Omaha,” is considered one of the most successful investors in history. Yet while the investment world may seem complex, Mr. Buffet’s advice is actually pretty simple. Here are a few Buffet quotes, along with some suggestions on putting them to use:
“Whether we’re talking about socks or stocks, I like buying quality merchandise when it is marked down.” Essentially, this means you should look for good investment vehicles whose price may have dropped. A “bear” market tends to drag down many stocks — even those with strong fundamentals and favorable prospects. These stocks might then be considered “bargains.” One way to determine whether a stock is “expensive” or “cheap” is by looking at its price-to-earnings ratio (P/E). For example, if Company “A” has a share price of $20 and earnings per share of $4, then it has a P/E of 5. On the other hand, if Company “B” has the same share price of $20, but has earnings per share of $2, its P/E would be 10. So it would be considered more expensive than Company “A.” Be aware, though, that the P/E ratio works better as a measure of cost when you are comparing two companies in the same industry.
“Time is the friend of the wonderful business, the enemy of the mediocre.” Be prepared to own quality stocks for the long term; over time, your confidence may be rewarded. On the other hand, if an investment is not of high quality, its flaws will be revealed over the years.
“If investors insist on trying to time their participation in equities, they should try to be fearful when others are greedy and greedy only when others are fearful.” Trying to “time” the market — that is, attempting to buy when prices are low and sell when prices are high — is a difficult task. Too many people do just the opposite: They try to “cut their losses” by selling when the market is down and then go after the “hot” investment whose price may already be as high as it’s going to go. Mr. Buffet clearly is not in favor of a market timing approach, and those who try to do it, he says, are probably better off by going against the crowd. Keep in mind, though, that even when holding investments rather than trying to time the market, investing in equities does involve risk, including potential loss of principal.
“When we own portions of outstanding businesses with outstanding managements, our favorite holding period is forever.” When should you sell good investments? Never, according to Mr. Buffet. And while this endless holding period may not be possible for all of us, you get the idea: the longer you keep a good investment, the better off you may be when you do sell.
“The line separating investment and speculation, which is never bright and clear, becomes blurred still further when most market participants have recently enjoyed triumphs. Nothing sedates rationality like large doses of effortless money.” The lesson here? Be an investor, not a speculator. A long run-up in the market can increase your wealth, but it may also make you prone to risky behavior if you think that all your investments will rise indefinitely. As an investor, you may well want to consider Mr. Buffet’s ideas— after all, they’ve sure worked well for him.

TESTIMONIAL: Phil - Tara Woods on his Installation: “I would like to thank you and your staff for the great job installing my new air conditioner. After getting quotes from two other companies, including the company that had been servicing my old unit, I thought you should know why I chose your company. It wasn’t based on price alone, even though your quote was extremely competitive. Custom Cooling was recommended by many folks in my community along with a neighbor that handles the heating and cooling at Edison College. When you first visited us for the initial quote, you were the only representative that thoroughly explained all options. I found your sales presentation both informative and honest. Having been an auto dealer for almost 30 years, I appreciate that type of business approach. The installation was fast and neat with no surprises. Please feel free to use me as a reference. I will let everyone know why I chose Custom Cooling. Thank you for your admirable business ethics.”

removing seed pods, crossing branches and small twiggy growth improves the appearance and form of the plant. Cold Protection: If a frost or freeze is predicted, bring sensitive plants like orchids inside. Water sensitive plants in the landscape thoroughly 12-24 hours before a freeze and cover. Pests: To control scale on citrus, shrubs, and deciduous fruit trees, apply horticultural oil while plants are dormant. Apply copper spray to mangos after bloom. What to Plant Bedding Plants: Plants that can be added to the garden during the coolest months include begonia, browallia, lobelia, dianthus, dusty miller, and nicotiana. Bulbs: Winter is a great time to plant bulbs that will bloom this spring. Some to try are Clivia lily, crinum, and agapanthus. Herbs: Many herbs will thrive now that temperatures are cooler, including tarragon, thyme, dill, fennel, and any of the mints. Vegetables: Continue planting cool season crops including beet, cabbage, turnip, lettuce, and broccoli.
