The final round of Summer Golf ended on Tuesday, October 6 with a BBQ in the courtyard at Del Tura Golf & Country Club. All golfers and guests enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs and all the trimmings, as well as BEER - all paid for by the money collected during the summer. We all enjoyed music from Colton James and Family in the courtyard which made the event really special. Door prizes were given out.

We look forward to seeing you. Donna Phillips, 731-5802, and Bev Bayer, 731-7734.

FROM THE DESK OF THE MANAGER Management has conducted numerous community tours this summer which resulted in reminders being sent to residents for trimming, palm tree trimming, house washing, etc. I know some of you were not happy to receive a notice, but please rest assured that no one person was singled out. Everyone needs to make sure that their home is taken care of while they are away. If your home is in need of power washing, trimming, or new name signs, please make arrangements to have the work done as soon as possible. Also, do not leave items stored around the home. If management has to complete the work, the fees will be much higher than what an individual could contract the work for on their own. Some of the accomplish-

ments this summer include: Road seal coating, tennis courts resurfaced, lake fountains cleaned and new LED lighting, pool deck painted, landscaping around the Clubhouse/pool bath building, and tennis building. Also, benches were replaced at shuffleboard courts, and adding hot water was added to the outside shower. While we are on the subject of showers, let’s remember that the showers are for rinsing off before going into the pool. Please don’t tie up the facilities for extended periods of time for your personal use. Just a reminder to pick up after your dog while out walking. The designated areas for walking them are around the lakes and the common areas up front. The dog run in the back is being enjoyed by

many. Please make use of it. Your pet does like to run. Thank you for your cooperation. REMEMBER – TRASH OUT BY 7:00 AM ON MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS ALSO THE SPEED LIMIT IS 20 MPH LIGHT IN FRONT OF EACH HOME SHOULD BE ON IN THE EVENING

FROM THE PRESIDENT manager, to the October meeting of the Association, who updated the membership on the improvements that were done over the summer and those that are to come in the near future. We live in a beautiful community and we appreciate the effort made by Doug and Hometown America to keep it a premier community. The Bylaws Committee submitted their revisions to the Board at the October 6th Board meeting. All met with the Board’s approval. They will be part of the packet sent in December to members in good standing, which will also include the call for the Annual Meeting on Monday, January 11, 2016, the budget for 2016, and the candidates running for the Board of Directors. Remember, you must be present at the meeting to vote in the election of members to the Board. The three major changes to our voting procedures brought about by the passing of HB 307 were introduced and discussed at the October Membership Meeting. These revisions were highlighted in the October Columns. Hopefully, those present

now understand these changes a little better. If necessary, we will introduce a shortened version at the November meeting for our returning snowbirds. Thank you to the New England Club for hosting the Halloween Party. The season has begun! The Midwest Club is hosting the Christmas Party. That’s always a special party to celebrate the Christmas season and it will be here before you know it. Watch for ticket sales to begin in early November. The November Association Meeting is on Monday, November 9th at 7:00 PM. I look forward to seeing you there. There is much to hear about and it is another venue to purchase tickets to the Christmas Party. I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving. We have much to be thankful for living in our beautiful, caring Tara Woods community.

As per my October article, I’m glad I understand how to cope with change. Before the Columns went to print, some information I wrote about was already obsolete. That’s a hazard of having to write an article so early in the month, or is it Murphy’s Law? There’s always the chance that something will change overnight, and if it can happen, it usually will. What I’m referring to is the introduction of a new Activities Coordinator, and the decorating and un-decorating of the Clubhouse for Christmas. Liz had to resign as Coordinator, and at this time we have no one to oversee the Christmas decorating and un-decorating. An appeal will be given at the October Membership Meeting to fill these voids. Hopefully, this information will be obsolete as well, before the November Columns goes to print. That would be a good thing! The Valentine’s Day party is still up for grabs. Why not get a group together and try your hand at hosting a party? Your community would appreciate it. We were pleased to welcome Doug Objartel, our community

TWHA DUES FOR 2016 2015, and you are paying your dues now, you will be paying for 2016. If you have not paid for 2015, you will NOW pay for 2015 and those dues will expire on January 31, 2016. This will mostly affect new residents who were not here a year ago. In either case, you will ONLY be able to vote in the election on Monday, January 11, 2016 if you have already paid dues for 2015. Dues for 2016 are effective February 1, 2016 to January 31, 2017. Sound confusing?? Contact me. I will explain. Since the dues are the major income for the Homeowners

Association, I encourage you to become a new member, or to renew your membership from last year, I also ask that you pay your dues by the end of December. It makes my life easier on election night. My best wishes to all for a Happy Thanksgiving.

When Christmas time arrives, we always conjure up memories of Christmas past. I remember when…… When I was little…….. We always celebrated at grandmas….. Everyone can relate to Christmas traditions in our family growing up, or traditions we had with our kids. Isn’t that what Christmas is all about? This year is an old fashioned Christmas. It is the Christmas we want to remember – decorating the tree, and going to Grandmas. We encourage all Clubs to decorate their trees

with memories. The community Christmas party will focus on Christmas memories. Our goal is to bring memories to the front and conversation to the front of our memories. Please come to an Old Fashioned Christmas at the Clubhouse on December 5th. Tickets will be on sale at the Clubhouse starting on November 7th thru November 27th at Saturday morning Coffee and Bingo on Tuesday night. Time is short so don’t delay for a memorable Christmas. OUR 60th ANNIVERSARY We had a big September! We had our 60th celebration planned for a weekend at Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan, Wisc. Unbeknownst to us, our family, and especially our daughter, Valerie and Ron, planned a surprise weekend for us, the weekend before in Door County – to celebrate our anniversary and Ken’s birthday – and we all did both weekends. Our granddaughter, husband and Bradley, 1½, were visiting and in walked our family, including our son, Greg, Wendy and grandson, Bryan from Iowa, yelling “Surprise” and giving us

balloons and flowers. The whole weekend was all planned and we just enjoyed it all – picnic, cakes, gifts, dinner at an elegant restaurant and church the next day, even though they had to travel a distance to come. Ken and I celebrated at Lake Delavan. The next day, with family, we had fun riding on our son, Steve, and Darla’s pontoon boat. We were treated to another delicious dinner. I’ve included a few photos and there are more on Facebook. It was a great anniversary. Beth Ferri

NEW HAMPSHIRE GREENHOUSE COLLABORATIVE UPDATE This is an update from New Hampshire on the Greenhouse collaborative On the right hand side is a brief summary of how we are doing in the Greenhouse, poundwise, comparing 2014 to 2015. We must keep in mind that we did add some growing beds last Fall…...443 square feet to the existing 1008 square feet. To do better with the added “real estate”, we needed to produce at

least 2050 pounds this season. We’ve already surpassed that. I am confident that by the end of our 2015 growing season, we will have doubled our production. Consequently, this has saved New Horizons thousands of purchase dollars for produce. These results are all thanks to the wonderful collaborative of Greenhouse volunteers, their hard work and care to log each item of produce into the Plant

Book. Mike Renzulli

The Midwest Club officers would like to thank all our members for making our Oktoberfest such a fun event.

When: Friday, November 20th, 4:30 PM As was discussed at our October meeting, we have some very important things to discuss at our November meeting. We will be voting on the guidelines and any changes in the coming month. The second order of business will be to start planning the Community Christmas party our Club is hosting on December 5th. We will only have 24 days until the community party as of our November meeting, so all hands are needed. There will be two sign-up sheets on our Midwest board in the Clubhouse. One is to sign up to volunteer to serve or bring a soup, salad or dessert for the November meeting. Remember! NOW SHE IS A TEACHER!!! In September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a History teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks in her classroom. When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks. ‘Ms. Cothren, where are our desks?’ She replied, ‘You can’t have a desk until you tell me how you earn the right to sit at a desk.’ They thought, ‘Well, maybe it’s our grades.’ ‘No,’ she said. ‘Maybe it’s our behavior.’ ‘No, it’s not even your behavior.’ And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom. Kids called their parents to tell them what was happening and by early afternoon, television news crews had started gathering at the

school to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room. The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the desk-less classroom; Martha Cothren said, “Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he or she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you.” At this point, Martha Cohren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it. Twenty-seven (27) U.S. Veterans, all in uniform, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall. By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned. Martha said, “You didn’t earn

the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. They went halfway around the world, giving up their education and interrupting their careers and families so you could have the freedom you have. Now, it’s up to you to sit at them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education. Don’t ever forget it.” This is a true story; and this teacher was awarded the Veterans of Foreign Wars Teacher of the Year for the State of Arkansas in 2006. She is the daughter of a WWII POW. Let us never forget that the freedoms we have in this great country were earned by our U.S. Veterans. Let us always remember the men and women of our military and the rights they have won for us. Farmers’ Skills Can Pay Off for Investors, Too

In many parts of the country, it’s harvest season. As a consumer, you will certainly be affected by the labors of farmers — and their particular skill set can also teach you a lot in your role as investor. Here are a few suggestions for putting farmers’ behaviors to work for you: • Keep a cool head. Farmers have to cope with all sorts of challenges – bad weather, changing crop prices, availability and cost of land, global trade policies, etc. But the most successful farmers don’t panic, follow sound agricultural practices and adapt their work habits as necessary. As an investor, you, too, need to keep a cool head, especially in the face of volatile markets, political turmoil and changes in the economy. Don’t overreact to today’s headlines; instead, constantly plan for tomorrow, and follow an investment strategy designed to help you achieve your goals.

• Keep learning. Farmers are constantly learning new techniques from agricultural extension services and other sources. When you invest, you can also benefit from educating yourself on the various factors – corporate earnings, changing interest rates, and so on – affecting the financial markets.

Control your expenses. Farming isn’t cheap. The cost of farm equipment is daunting, land is expensive, water usage can be enormous – the list goes on and on. The most successful farmers work hard to manage their costs, and it’s an ongoing challenge. As an investor, you also can incur plenty of costs – especially if you’re constantly buying and selling securities, which can lead to heavy commissions and fees, along with higher-than-necessary capital gains taxes. Following a long-term, “buy-and-hold” investment strategy can help you con- trol your investment costs while also helping you build and preserve your long-term financial security.

• •

Be flexible. The ups and downs of growing commodity crops have become more frequent, forcing farmers to become more flexible and resourceful in their business. For example, many farmers have started producing specific products for specific markets, thus giving them an “all-weather” income stream. As an investor, you may also need to look for new opportunities as they arise, provided these moves are still within the overall context of your long-term strategy. To be able to make such moves, you’ll want to keep a reasonable amount of “cash” in your investment portfolio. Be patient. Farmers plant crops and nurture them carefully for months before it’s harvest time. In fact, it’s possible that no other occu- pation requires such a willingness to wait for results – and payouts. Similarly, when you invest, you simply can’t expect to instantly turn huge profits; no matter what you may hear, investing is not a “get rich quick” type of endeavor. The best investors work toward growth slowly, over a period of many decades, and only by diligently pursuing a strategy that’s appropriate for their individual needs, goals and risk tolerance. In short, when it comes to investing, patience isn’t just a virtue – it’s a necessity.

Farmers work long hours, but they don’t just work hard – they work smart. Emulating their work habits and patterns can help as you cultivate the investment fields. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

The New Image Chorus began their 5th season on Monday, October 5th. At that time we had the pleasure to welcome our new Director, Dave Adams and his wife, Nancy. Dave and Nancy come to us from Rockport, Mass. and now reside in Del Tura. They are both multi-talented with a musical background in band, chorus, theatre and radio. Our first rehearsal gave us a “taste” of what we will be doing and believe me it will be exciting. With that thought in mind, we want to extend a personal invitation to anyone interested in singing and doing whatever Dave might have in his musical notebook. Rehearsals are in the Clubhouse on Mondays from 1:30-3:30 PM. Come by and check us out! Shirley Ringleben

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB Welcome back to our winter residents! In November, the Computer Club will begin a new season of free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. Our first meeting, on Thursday, November 5th, is an introductory get-together. We will discuss our upcoming schedule and I will take suggestions for topics that you would like to have covered in the lessons. Try to think of any subjects that you might be interested in. Our next meeting, on November 12th, will provide a summary overview of each of the topics (both Basic and General) that we intend to cover during the coming year. I will also be available to answer any of your questions at that time. November 19th will be our first actual lesson. This will be a description, demonstration, and critique of the new Microsoft Windows 10 for the benefit of anyone who will be purchasing a new computer after Thanksgiving. ALL new computers come with this new version of Windows. I will also discuss how to upgrade from Windows 7 or 8 for free. If you are thinking about performing this upgrade, DON’T DO IT until you see this presentation. We will not meet on Thanksgiving Day (November 26th). Our normal schedule of classes begins on December 3rd. The first and third Thursdays of each month are devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer. The second and fourth Thursdays are reserved for general subjects, and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. We will not meet on December 24th or 31st due to the holidays.

(Continuing Computer Club from page 21) It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. This is a great time to learn the Basics; we are starting again at the very beginning and assume that you know nothing about computers. The General topics cover all sorts of subjects, programs, and hardware, including Windows, the Internet, email, multi-media, tablets, and e-book readers. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. So Ladies and Gentlemen…..soon TARA’S GOT TALENT will be making its debut on stage. A Fund Raiser for the Entertainers Saturday, November 21st 7:00 PM $7.00 suggested donation General Admission and Cabaret tables available You may Bring Your Own Beverage and snacks for cabaret tables only. We will provide light refreshments after the show for a meet and greet. We will be raffling a Spirit Basket and a Gourmet Basket. Tickets started on sale on October 20th at Bingo and at Saturday’s Coffee. This will be your chance to be in the audience enjoying your fellow Tara-ites performing; or possibly you will be one of the lucky ones on stage with your talent. We want to say thanks to all of you for helping in any way to make this become a reality. Last year when Polly Brown and I suggested this as a fund raiser for the Entertainers, we were not sure that it could really happen, but here we are, a few weeks from the show. Thanks again to all! We are getting people from

the whole community to highlight their talents. Not everyone’s talent is on stage; some have talents in different ways like sound, lights, ticket sales, hall set-up, back stage or in the kitchen. We have different talents for different people. The important part is that we enjoy working together to achieve a successful end. Getting to this point was a lot of work but it gave us a chance to get to talk to and know people who were new to us. We hope to see you in the audience on Saturday, November 21st. So make sure to get your tickets for Tara’s Got Talent at Saturday’s Coffee or before Bingo, then come and enjoy the show. P.S. The Entertainers are actively looking for people, male or female, who would like to act in our plays. We are looking for interested people to begin by standing in for our current actors when they take time off. This practice could put you in a great position to participate in future productions. With many residents returning and many new people moving into Tara Woods, we are hoping to find people who would like to try their hand at acting. No previous experience is necessary! Give it a try in one of our practices this season and see if you like it. We practice on Mondays and Thursdays at 8:00 AM in the Clubhouse. Contact Patty Sparany, 543-5144, or Pat Dunning, 599-4490, if you are interested.

NOVEMBER GARDENING CALENDAR kale, and lettuce. What to do Perennials: Divide and replant overgrown perennials, ornamental grasses, and bulbs now so that they establish before the coolest weather arrives. Fungal disease: Until May, watch for brown patch and large patch, fungal diseases that cause areas of grass to turn brown. Since treatment is difficult, prevention with proper cultural practices is key. Scale on ornamental plants: Now that temperatures are lower, use dormant oil sprays to control scale insects. Irrigation: Plants need less

supplemental watering in cooler weather. Turn off systems and water only if needed. Poinsettias: Watch for hornworms on poinsettias planted in the landscape. This pest can quickly defoliate a plant; handpick or treat only the area infested. Lawns: This is a great time to plant ryegrass to cover bare patches in the lawn.
