Technology in Education - a Panacea? Quality education is everybody’s goal. In fact, it is a universal goal. It is in this premise that educators find ways and means to deliver instruction effectively so as to enhance learning amidst global innovations. One of the ways being born is the introduction of technology inside the classrooms. Many people believe that technology is changing the way faculty teach and students learn. As technological advances are introduced into the academy, schools are more and more attracted by the promise and potential of technology for enhancing access and learning. Faculty, staff and even administrators need to understand what technology can and what it cannot do. This technology is seen by some as the panacea - some see visions of hundreds of students sitting in front of monitors, with talking heads providing cheap, mass education. Others see technology as a critical complement to the educational experience, opening more opportunities for the learner. We believe that the Grade School Department of University of Saint Louis is in support with the second vision, that is, through technology, we can achieve quality education. By giving our learners access to a new world of information, computers have been a powerful tool. The Internet has brought an unprecedented level of great educational content. E-mail has facilitated improved communication among people. Emerging Web service technologies would further create opportunities for collaborative learning. These are the things the department would want to happen. But, we’ve still a long way to go before we see how much technology can really do. We must view technology from a critical, reflective distance in order to fulfill our responsibilities to our pupils. For all the value that a virtual world can bring to teaching and leaning, we must promote technology with a HEART!

Empedrad, GradeSchool Principal visited the City of Friendship - Cagayan de Oro, last September 22-27 to attend the 2008 Seminar Workshop for Science Club Advisers of the Philippines held at Grand Caprice Hotel. The seminar was attended by science enthusiasts - science teachers, science club advisers, principals, supervisors and directors. Topics in the seminar revolved around the theme “Science and Technology: Focus on Food Security for Community Development”. The theme was timely as our country is confronted with various concerns like food security, food poisoning, shortage of basic needs and other science- based problems. Speakers lengthily discussed in their lectures the small steps that could be done to solve these problems through research and experimentation. Some researches like birth of submarine rice, production of goods using moringa oleifera (malunggay), use of human feces as fertilizers were presented. Such topics enhanced the knowledge of the Science teachers and were challenged to go on researches and science experiments to help solve the problems. Presentations of investigatory projects were done giving time for the participants to interact with other Science teachers and club advisers. The seminar was a success. The participants were eager to go home and apply what they have learned in their respective posts.

Parenting: A Challenge “A little girl and her father were crossing a bridge. The father was kind of scared so he asked his little daughter. “Sweetheart, please hold my hand so that you don’t fall into the river.” The little girl said, “No, Dad. You hold my hand.” “What’s the difference?” asked the puzzled father. “There’s a big difference,” replied the little girl. “If I hold your hand and something happens to me, chances are that I may let your hand go. But if you hold my hand, I know for sure that no matter what happens, you will never let my hand go.” -Adapted-

T “ he short anecdote that you have read seems so simple yet it may touch the hearts of every parent that would read it. It speaks shortly of the role of parents in their children’s lives. Indeed, parents are expected to hold the hands of their children to ensure that these children would tread the right way. They are important in building their dreams and make them come true. However, this is not a simple task. We have to know our responsibilities as parents and we have to carry out these responsibilities if we want to have a happy home. These are some guidelines given by R. Valencia, S. Bismark (InquirerFirst posted 05-12-2007) which you can follow: 1. Thou shall bear children to love and nurture. Children should never be seen as unwanted burdens or accidental offshoots of the sexual act.

Parents are expected to hold the hands of their children to ensure that these children would tread the right way.

They are natural products of sexual activity and, therefore, must be cared for. They are beloved Sparks of the Supreme Being. To find fulfillment, we must show them love. 2. Thou shall not treat children as future investments. Real love is unconditional - it should not contain terms and conditions. W e should train our children well, but when they reach adulthood, we should accept that they have their own choices to make and paths to follow. 3. Thou shall respect - and communicate with children as spiritual parcels of the Supreme Lord. Their small bodies aren’t reflections of their true identities. They should be given

the proper information and guidance about life. Listen to them when they express their ideas and share their problems. 4. Thou shall be willing to accept sacrifices in the care of the young. The performance of pious work is guaranteed to bring a person to a higher plane of existence. 5. Thou shall nourish children. Don’t poison them by exposing them to toxic food and environment. 6. Thou shall not be lazy in teaching and correcting them. We need to be firm and consistent when training young people. 7. Thou shall be a good example - in words and in deed!

A call to the world

by Mathhew Tungpalan

any people are now leading carefree lives, just enjoying life, a sumptous life, carried away by pride, greed and selfish desires. They have had, all they could ever want but they did not even consider the consequences of their actions. Mankind’s works have contributed a large part to climate change. To make it simpler...”WE ARE THE MAIN CAUSE OF CLIMATE CHANGE!”.

Global warming has damaged the North Pole, that has been the home of Polar bears, who right now are struggling or fighting for survival. They are now extinct, yet this hasn’t brought or gave a thought to us, people, of the harm it can even cause. On the other hand, in the South Pole, there are many penguin eggs that are not capable to hatch or grow for their parents could not find any place to bear their children wherein they can live safely. Oh, what have we done? These

Until each one of us realizes that the destruction of Mother Nature is our direct responsibility, children like me will continue to suffer and other laws that protect the environment will merely be again another rule to break.

are just one of the few manifestations on how global warming and climate change damage the whole world. Shall we still wait for many animals other than polar bears to be extinct before we make a move? I believe, people have lost themselves, that we lost ourselves! Our souls are now dead for having been exposed to many animalies due to our desire to make our lives rich. We now consider ourselves as somebody who committed a largest sin - to create an evil scheme plotted against Mother Nature and of course to humanity! We already have lost our consciousness, our conscience and ultimately our love and concern to Mother Earth.

Many children are now witnessing the large change we have brought into our world. With this, I now call on you, I’m pleading from you to stop what you are doing and let us together face the real thing - that our Mother Earth needs our help. This is now the right time for us to move before it will already be too late. Other environmental hazards will only get better when the urgent need for improvement is instilled in our minds and is manifested in our actions. As one of the articles I encountered says: “Until each one of us realizes that the destruction of Mother Nature is our direct responsibility, children like me will continue to suffer and other laws that protect the environment will merely

be again another rule to break.” We have the power in our own hands! If one person can make a difference, imagine what the largest continent in the world can do when it works together. Let us join efforts in making our world a better place to live in! We are the Earth’s only hope! The action is within us. Let us not turn our back to the call of our Mother Earth. If ever, we are not doing this as a favor but as a payment for her endless care for us. Remember, she is our life! We cannot survive with our her. Let us now then make a move, let us find ourselves. I know, there is still tomorrow and I believe there will always be....

isneyland is everybody’s dream place. Both the old and the young wish to visit the place which is believed to be full of wonder and awe. This year, the Grade School Department has had a glimpse of what a Disneyland is not by having a first hand experience of it but rather through portraying the different Disney films which had touched the lives of many especially the young children. Hold your breath as the department would bare you the different Disney films loved by many through their musical presentations. In stifling Edwardian London, Wendy Darling mesmerizes her brothers nightly with bedtime tales of sword play, swashbuckling and the fearsome Hook. But the children become the heroes of an even greater story when Peter Pan flies into their nursery one night and leads them over moonlit rooftops through a galaxy of stars to the lush jungles of Neverland. Wendy and her brothers join Peter and the Lost Boys in an exhilarating life free of grown-up rules, while also facing the inevitable showdown with Hook

The story was presented musically by the Grade 1 pupils with all their lovely costumes and a wonderful setting. • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a simple story of a charming little princess saved from the evil deeds of her wicked stepmother, the queen by a group of seven adorable dwarfs. In the story, the princess is befriended by woodland creatures who lead her to a cottage deep in the woods owned by the seven dwarfs. The princess was welcomed by the seven little creatures as their guest. His staff is transformed into objects to do with their profession. In the village, a beautiful young girl feels lonely and misunderstood, ‘cause she reads books and seems to be the only one. Her father is a nutty professor. He goes off to compete at an inventors’ fair but gets lost in the woods and ends up a prisoner at the beast’s castle. Belle, the girl keeps looking for him, finds him there and pleads to let her father go, in return for her staying there with the beast. It’s a done deal and Belle is now trapped in the castle with the beast and his staff. She manages to fall in love with the beast. Gaston is upset that Belle is not interested in him. When her father claims she trapped with a beast, Gaston sees the opportunity to have him committed to a mental hospital, thereby forcing Belle to marry him. This almost works, but the

Reaching Out: Its Truest Essence

o one is so rich that he has nothing to receive and no one is so poor that he has nothing to give.”, so goes the very inspiring adage and the same adage gave an inspiration to the Grade School Department when they reached out to our brothers and sisters in the Dinggin Ka Learning Center (DKLC). Our brethren in the DKLC need our love and care. Needless to say, they need our assistance and support. W e all live as one family and it would be so sad to note if some of our brothers are in pain and difficulties. If possible, we would do everything to make them happy. With this, the different clubs and organizations planned an outreach activity that would simply give joy and happiness to our DKLC brothers and sisters.

The outreach activity went so well. We had seen how our pupils in the department made our DKLC pupils fulfilled and satisfied and we also had seen how happy are they when they ate together , played together, and danced together. This is the truest essence of reaching out - making others happy and making them smile. The happiness is insurmountable. This does not mean that we have to spend much just so to

reach out to them. With the simple things that we gave, we believe we made them happy. With the games and moments we shared, we are sure that we made them smile and we made them feel that they were accepted. Their smiles would never equal any other joy that we feel. Simple as these may seem, we are sure that we have touched their hearts and lives in our own ways, sharing the least things we have.

Grade school goes... from page 12 of the meeting between Pocahontas and John Smith. Capt. John Smith leads a rag-tag band of English sailors and soldiers to the New World to plunder its riches for England. Meanwhile, in this “New World”, Chief Powhatan has pledged his daughter, Pocahontas, to be married to the village’s greatest warrior. Pocahontas, however, has other ideas. She has seen a vision of a spinning arrow, a vision she believes tells her change is coming. Her life does indeed change when the English ship lands near her village. Between Ratcliffe, who believes the savages are hiding the gold he expected to be plentiful, and Powhatan, who believes these pale newcomers will destroy

their land, Smith and Pocahontas have a difficult time preventing all-out war and saving their love to each other. • This retelling of the Old Chinese folktale is about the story of a young Chinese maiden who learns that her weakened and lame father is to be called up into the army in order to fight the invading Huns. Knowing that they would never survive the rigorous of war in his state, she decides to disguise herself and join in his place. Unknown to her, her ancestors are aware of this and to prevent it, they order a tiny disgraced dragon, Mushu to join her in order to force her to abandon her plan. He agrees, but when he meets Mulan, he learns that she cannot be

dissuaded and so decides to help her in the perilous times ahead. The Grade 6 presented this film creatively. • A young lion prince is born in Africa, thus making his Uncle Scar the second in line to the throne. Scar plots with the hyenas to kill King Mufasa and Prince Simba, thus making himself King. The King is killed and Simba is led to believe by Scar that it was his fault and so he flees the kingdom in shame. After years of exile he is persuaded to return home to overthrow the usurper and claim the kingdom as his own thus completing the “Circle of Life”. The film was presented by the DKLC. Full of creativity, they were able to catch the whole story. Reference:Internet

Books

by Matthew Tungpalan What a wonder is the world of books, As you turn the pages About castles, trees and beautiful brooks. It brings you the places That you have never seen Filled with new faces. As you travel to worlds Sitting on a chair With a single book of words. This is the world of books As you can see Of animals, kings, dukes That we can witness when the children read.

by Suzette Leong

We all know that nobody has seen the wind The swaying trees, the fresh cool breeze The scattered leaves, the flying papers But nobody has ever seen the wind. We cannot see the wind, but feel it To the tune ofthe music, to the rhythm of the beat Every sleep, every word and every people you find Still nobody saw the wind. Every heartbeat and every song I cannot wait for too long How important it is to know No one will ever see the wind.
