Welcome to our Summer 2014 Newsletter Dear Friends, Since April, when I last put pen to paper, we have seen a lot of activity within the department. The Archibald Knox issue has, not surprisingly, proved very popular as our main postal issue for 2014. Each time I see a letter coming through my letterbox with one of the stamps affixed I see something different within the designs. During TT week we had a sales stand at the Grandstand where we set up a fun-fair-style photo booth to help raise funds for TT related charities: bikers and locals alike had great fun placing their heads through a cut-out image of John McGuinness! We had an unexpected visit to the stand on the 3rd June. The ladies on duty were especially impressed when ‘Red 10’ - Mike Ling from the Red Arrows Display Team and a colleague - came by in between displays over Ramsey and Douglas. They were able to confirm that our Red Arrow Booklet Panes were on board the aircraft. I was thrilled, even more so when they sent through a picture of ‘Red 1’ showing
us exactly where they were located; our stamps really do hit dizzy heights in every sense. As we look forward to our new issues I hope you enjoy all that we have on offer. People ask where the ideas for issues come from. Well, for our Playing Cards set, it was a chance conversation with a customer, Mr Sommerville, who was looking for a single stamp from the Coronation commemoratives issue, which illustrated a playing card featuring the Queen and Prince Philip. He mentioned Manx playing card historian Mike Goodall’s collection and ‘snap’ we had an issue! Sorry just had to say it, all good wishes…

Unique RAF Red Arrows Set Launched to mark 2014 Royal International Air Tattoo The 2014 Royal International Air Tattoo in July marked the official celebrations of the RAF Red Arrows’ 50th display season, and to celebrate we launched an exclusive and unique new stamp sheet set. On 3rd June, during the famous Isle of Man TT, the Red Arrows put on two displays in Manx skies, over Ramsey and Douglas. During both displays four aircraft were carrying, stowed in the ‘ground lock’ compartment in the nose, special sheets of our Red Arrows 50th Display Season stamp issue. Our new set includes a sheet flown during each display in a specially-designed mount featuring photos of the Red Arrows in action. Each sheet has also been postmarked with a very special cancellation. This is a limited edition product – just 500 pairs of the flown sheets are available. Prior to the Douglas Bay display Red Arrows Squadron Leader Mike Ling, ‘Red 10’, and the team’s Technical Director, who is an avid stamp collector, visited the Post Office’s TT shop and are pictured with our Prestige Booklets, a collector’s item which features two complete adhesive sets of the special six stamp issue marking the 50th Display Season of the RAF Red Arrows. • See Page 14 2

FA Cup History made in the Isle of Man For the first time ever, an FA Cup Final Commemorative Postal Cover has been issued in the Isle of Man. Dawn Cover Productions of Stockport have produced a cover for every FA Cup Final since 1971 in their Official Football Cover Series. However, this year they saw a golden opportunity to include an additional cover for collectors which was different and would have an Isle of Man stamp on. Hull City have the nickname “The Tigers” because of their black and amber striped shirts. They appeared in the FA Cup final for the first time in their 110 year history and as the Isle of Man currently had a “Tiger” stamp available, this was the deciding factor to sponsor a special handstamp in the Isle of Man. For readers interested in purchasing either the Isle of Man version of the FA Cup final covers, or the traditional Wembley one, they can purchase them directly at www.footballcover.co.uk or by calling 0161 483 1297.
Limited Edition Postmarked Envelope to mark the Millennium Anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf As part of the events commemorating the Battle of Clontarf millennium anniversary, the original illustrations of the stamps went on display at the Clontarf Castle Hotel in Dublin on Thursday 23rd April and Maxine Cannon was present on the day, representing Isle of Man Stamps and Coins on a trade stand with “Clontarf 2014 Committee Boru merchandise”. Isle of Man Stamps and Coins marks that date 1000 years on by launching a special marked limited edition envelope signed by Victor Ambrus and dated, 23rd April 2014. Only 1000 copies are available and are priced at £15 each. See page 16.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a miniature sheet and a single stamp issue featuring original artwork by Manx artist Catherine James. The Manx winters can be bleak, wet and cold and, on many occasions, “Manannan’s mantle of mist” makes it difficult to see further than the bottom of the garden. Yet, to awaken on a winter’s morning to windows limned with frost patterns (before central heating) is to enter another dimension, a magical transformation, a silvering of hoar frost-edged leaves. Rusty bracken, teasels and sea holly become gems to rival a jeweller’s window, all against a backdrop of winter lace trees, while the glowing colours of rose hips in the hedges entice hungry birds. Bright red holly berries with shining spiked leaves and ivy bowers bearing beautifully aligned fruits — in colours that range from green/orange to purple/black throughout the winter months — provide food for blackbirds and other members of the thrush family. These bowers also give essential shelter to many creatures on the cold and frosty nights. Then, the extra privilege of discovering, in a hedge of brambles, an old birds’ nest filled with a colourful array of berries, nuts and seeds, to form the jewelled larder of a field mouse. All of these images came to mind when I was asked to design the Winter Flora stamps for the Isle of Man Post Office. This also gave me the need to look in greater detail at the hellebores, now far removed from the original green hellebore, the wild relative of the Christmas rose, yet still retaining - for me - a primeval aspect, despite the amazing colours and patterns. What a designer is nature! I felt very privileged to be asked to design the stamps for the miniature sheet. There is so much beautiful flora in the winter and it’s lovely to highlight this in the stamps. Seeing my artwork in its final form as a miniature sheet is very rewarding indeed. Yes, a Manx winter can be cold and dark. It can also be incredibly beautiful. I hope the Winter Flora stamps give some indication of this other aspect of winter on our Island. Catherine James 4

Alison Crellin writes… The Panama Canal is a 77 kilometre (48 mile) waterway across the Isthmus of Panama joining the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Canal runs from Limón Bay at Colón to the Bay of Panama at Balboa and provides a key channel for international marine trade. Within the Canalwhich has a minimum depth of 2.5 metres-there are a series of three sets of locks: the Gatun, Pedro Miguel and the Miraflores locks. Its history can be traced back to the first explorers of the Americas where a narrow land bridge was found to offer the unique opportunity of creating a water passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This potential was recognised by the earliest European colonists of Central America before the idea was seriously pursued in 1819 when the Spanish government authorised the construction of a canal and the creation of a company to complete it. The project was stalled for some time whilst a number of surveys were taken, one of which was carried out by Manxman William Kennish. Born in Cornaa, Isle of Man, in 1799, he joined the Royal Navy at the age of 22. During his time with the Navy he was recognised by the Society of Arts and Commerce and is remembered as a notable engineer, explorer, inventor, scientist and poet. In 1855 he was employed to plot the Panama Canal which was approved by the United States Government. Sadly, he never saw the start of the Canal’s construction as he died in New York City in 1862. 6
The Panama Canal was constructed in two stages. A French company headed by Ferdinand de Lesseps-a French diplomat who was involved with the development of the Suez Canal joining the Mediterranean and Red Seas-began the effort to build a route at sea-level, without locks, on 1 January 1880. Work continued until 1893 when disease, the lack of French experience and the sheer difficulty of building a sea-level canal put a halt to progress. The project suffered a high death toll due to epidemics of malaria and yellow fever in the area. This, alongside earthquakes and financial problems, meant an estimated 22,000 workers were lost. The project was later bought out by the US Government who, in 1906, changed the design to a non-sea-level canal with locks. This decision was made when it was realised that, along with the need to develop disease control facilities, constructing a high-level lock canal would reduce the need for extensive excavation and help prevent landslides therefore counteracting many of the problems the French workforce had encountered. The Panama Canal was opened on 15 August 1914. The Panama Canal accommodates over 200 tons of cargo and an average of 14,000 ships a year, representing five percent of the world’s shipping industry. The route remains a viable commercial venture with ships today taking approximately nine hours to pass through. It is a vital link in world shipping and one of the busiest waterways in the world, with 2014 marking its 100th anniversary.

THE ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE IS PLEASED TO PRESENT A FASCINATING INSIGHT INTO THE HISTORY AND IMAGERY OF ISLE OF MAN PLAYING CARDS. Alison Crellin writes...
T
he history of playing cards is one filled with mystery and intrigue because, although many facts are certain about their origins, some details are still subject to debate. The main problem faced with pinning down their creation is due to the fragility of paper, however early examples can be traced to China - where most experts agree they originated as far back as 1294. It is thought that playing cards first arrived in Southern Europe during the late 1300s, spreading quickly via trade and colonialism, due to their small size and nature. Whilst different countries infused their local tastes into designs, the core elements of the decks and suits - based on the French red and black colour scheme - were established by the end of the 15th century. This model is closest to the version of cards we know and love today. Originally decks of cards were produced by hand which meant they were only available to the rich upper class. However, as printing techniques improved their accessibility increased. This meant that the sale and use of playing cards grew more common. Gambling became a popular pastime which led to the church and state intervening in order to control their use. It is reported that card games were banned in Florence, Italy in 1376 and, in 15th century England playing cards were forbidden apart from the 12 days of Christmas. There are even statements saying Henry VIII felt that card games were distracting his bowmen from training! In the late 19th century the Isle of Man began to benefit from a growing tourist industry and the Island developed into a favoured destination with visitors from Lancashire and Yorkshire. Hotels and boarding houses began to open alongside cafés and souvenir shops in order to cater for the visiting trade. Warrington businessman, Samuel Webb, opened his first shop in Duke Street, Douglas - later “Webb’s Bazaar, Public Lounge, Louvre and Gallery” in Strand Street, Douglas - after noting a demand for the sale of novelty goods to holidaymakers wishing to commemorate their trip.
8
Initially the backs of playing cards were left blank and were often used for writing notes and love letters, however, Webb had a card up his sleeve, having seen decks from the continent adapted as souvenir items for tourists. These cards had customised scenic views on each of the aces and, in 1863, having seen the potential for this product, Webb instructed London-based Charles Goodall and Sons to produce the first order. Over the next 57 years, they, along with Thomas De La Rue, Woolley, Valentine and companies in Britain, Austria, Germany and USA, produced approximately 30 different designs. Early packs included black and white illustrations of quintessential Island settings and later progressed to photographed locations. The backs commonly featured iconic Manx elements such as the Three Legs of Man or Manx cats, all of which added up to produce perfect tourist collectables. Webb died in 1903, but his entrepreneurial spark came up trumps leaving a unique legacy in Manx playing card history.

Future Issues Dark Skies Issue date 01.09.2014 In the Isle of Man we have fantastically clear skies and a unique role in the subjects of astronomy and astronautics. Acknowledged as the fifth most likely nation in the world to go to space, it is difficult to see from orbit because the Island has very little light pollution. Consequently the Island is one of the best places in the British Isles for stargazing and in 2012 the Island was awarded Dark Skies Discovery Status. Now with a total of 26 Dark Skies sites, the Island has the highest concentration in the British Isles.
The 50th Anniversary of Manx Radio Issue date 01.10.2014
Manx Radio has the historic distinction of being the first commercial radio station in the British Isles, at a time when broadcasting was a monopoly enjoyed by the BBC with no advertising content. The idea for it was born in 1960 by the setting up of a Manx Government-sponsored company to be a possible vehicle for launching commercial radio and TV programmes from the Isle of Man to the whole of the UK and well beyond, raising substantial revenues for the Manx Treasury. It was a brilliant and exciting concept, especially financially.
