Welcome to our Spring 2024 Newsletter
Dear Friends
Welcome to our first newsletter of 2024. Today I was out in the Manx countryside in the village of St Marks, very close to my childhood home at the Braaid, and as I looked out over the rolling countryside towards the south of our Island on a crisp clear blue sky day, I thought how lucky I am to live on such a beautiful Island amongst people who have a love for all that is good about it. I know many of you have visited us, and this year as we celebrate the birthplace of the RNLI in its bicentenary year. Visit Isle of Man are encouraging people to take a trip and savour our maritime heritage.
Talking of heritage, I read over the weekend that President Joe Biden is a lifelong fan of the Manx born Bee Gees. It is an honour for us to celebrate the work of Maurice Gibb with a new collection issued on 29th February, a once in every four years issue date.
I have the best job in the whole wide world…where in the same day would you be talking about the Year of the Dragon with our friends in Hong Kong and later the same day be viewing archive material featuring the history of the Universal Postal Union
200 YEARS OF SAVING LIVES AT SEA
In honour of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s (RNLI) monumental 200-year anniversary, Isle of Man Post Office proudly announces the launch of an exclusive stamp collection, paying homage to two centuries of maritime valour and life-saving endeavours.
and the centenary of commemorative stamps? More to come of that later this year.
On the same day I accepted delivery of the Marine Mosaics stamps. It is wonderful that Manx born artist Kimmy McHarrie’s work should feature on our stamps and has been approved by H M The King. One day in the future those stamps will be treasured as a piece of Isle of Man postal history. I hope you have enjoyed this little diary entry for the 9th January 2024.
Maxine and all the team at Stamps & Coins
Allen Corlett, Chairman of the RNLI’s Isle of Man 200th Anniversary Panel, said: “Our dedicated volunteers across the Isle of Man will be proud to see that the charity’s long history and enduring commitment to our lifesaving mission are valued by the community we serve. We are grateful to Isle of Man Post Office for working with us to create this stunning collection of commemorative stamps. They will inspire our volunteers and supporters, here and further afield, as we celebrate two centuries since Sir William Hillary’s vision took root in the Isle of Man, and as we look forward to another 200 years of service.”
In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the RNLI we are pleased to showcase our joint collection with Jersey Post and Guernsey Post. It has been a great pleasure to work together to produce a collection of 18 stamps which encompass the links and stories with the RNLI from each of our three Islands.
BEAUTIFUL MANX MARINE MOSAICS FEATURE ON STAMPS
We are delighted to share the works of Manx-born artist Kimmy McHarrie through this collection of six stamps. Prominently displayed at Ronaldsway Airport, Kimmy recently unveiled a basking shark mosaic at over 10ft in length. Commissioned by Culture Vannin, this impressive work uses local stone and repurposed glass to draw attention to the dwindling numbers of basking sharks visiting Manx waters.
Kimmy’s basking shark artwork beautifully adorns the front of this collections Presentation Pack and we hope many of you will get the chance to view her work in person when passing through our airport.
TREECYCLE 2023
Isle of Man Post Office was delighted to support Hospice Isle of Man through the annual Treecycle campaign. Post Office staff and volunteers collected over 900 unwanted Christmas trees from across the Island with 10.24 tonnes of trees shredded to be recycled. We are pleased to have raised £15,745 with all donations in aid of Hospice Isle of Man
NOTICE REGARDING STATIONERY SURCHARGE
In order to maintain the quality and presentation of our stationery items, after many years of holding our pricing structure we have been presented with significant price rises which unfortunately we can no longer absorb. As a result we have increased the cost of service on First Day Covers and Presentation Packs by 40p.
ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE IS DELIGHTED TO ISSUE THIS LANDMARK COLLECTION OF STAMPS CELEBRATING THE BI-CENTENARY OF THE RNLI.
ORIGINS OF THE RNLI
The RNLI was founded on the Isle of Man in 1824 by local resident Sir William Hillary. In the early 19th century there was an average of 1,800 shipwrecks a year around British coasts. Hillary saw the treacherous nature of the sea firsthand, having witnessed dozens of shipwrecks around the Manx coast and saved many lives with the help of locals.
On 28th February 1823, Sir William Hillary made an impassioned appeal to the nation. Just over a year later, on 4th March 1824, Sir William Hillary’s vision for a service dedicated to saving lives at sea became a reality.
On 10th September 1824 the Institution received a request from Sir William Hillary for a lifeboat for Douglas “…on account of the frequent gales andwrecks in Douglas Bay”. The boat was built, then sent in October 1825.
PORT ST. MARY LIFEBOAT STATION
Port St Mary Lifeboat Station currently operates a Trent class all-weather lifeboat and a D class inshore lifeboat.
The station is the youngest of the current Manx lifeboat stations by age, however it is the only station still using the original boathouse building.
On 6th November 2021 an early morning rescue involved both lifeboats and would result in saving the lives of 3 yachts’ crew. For superb boat handling, seamanship, and courage a Bronze Medal was awarded to helm Leigh. Framed Letters of Appreciation signed by the Chief Executive will be awarded to inshore lifeboat crew Chris Hill, Daniel Grace, ALB Coxswain Mike Keggen and Lifeboat Operations Manager Sarah Keggen. Framed Letters of Appreciation signed by the Operations Director were awarded to all the other all-weather lifeboat crew on the service.
PEEL LIFEBOAT STATION
Operating from within the fishing harbour of Peel, the lifeboat station has a Shannon class all-weather lifeboat.
The lifeboat house was constructed in 1885, its effectiveness quickly proving itself, when in 1889 medals were presented to the crew by the Norwegian Government for the rescue of 23 people from the barque St George of Christiania
On Tynwald Day 2021, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited the station to inspect the new Shannon lifeboat, Frank and Brenda Winter, prior to its entering service in October 2021, as the first Shannon all-weather lifeboat to be stationed in the Isle of Man. Her Royal Highness also presented several volunteers with long-service awards.
The stamp image displays RNLB B-536 in action. The vessel serviced Peel from 1976-1992.
PORT ERIN STATION
Port Erin Lifeboat Station has a long and distinguished history. It is situated on the south-west of the Isle of Man and was founded in the 1880s with its first station building being built in 1884. The first lifeboat at Port Erin Station was a ten oared self-righting open boat.
In 1970 Coxswain Maddrell BEM was awarded an RNLI Bronze Medal for Gallantry, after the lifeboat launched in a south south-westerly gale, rough seas and very poor visibility. A few years later, a Letter of Thanks of the Institution, inscribed on vellum, was awarded to Coxswain Peter Woodworth for successfully saving the lives of two men.
The station has been serviced by an inshore lifeboat since 1992, with the current boat being an Atlantic 85 class, Muriel and Leslie.
RAMSEY LIFEBOAT STATION
In 1829 Ramsey’s first lifeboat arrived, a Palmer non-selfrighting type lifeboat. By the mid-1850s this boat was no longer serviceable. In 1868 the RNLI’s Committee of Management received a letter from the Island’s Lieutenant Governor, requesting that a new lifeboat be sent to Ramsey. The Two Sisters arrived, under tow from the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company’s Mona’s Queen, in November 1868.
Since 1829 Ramsey has had 6 pulling/sailing lifeboats and 6 motor boats, the latest being the Shannon class, Ann and James Ritchie ll, which arrived in Ramsey in February 2022.
RNLI awards to the station include Silver and Bronze Medals and several Thanks of the RNLI on vellum to the coxswain and crew. Other awards include MBEs, BEMs, Finnish Government Silver and Bronze Medals plus other sea gallantry awards.
DOUGLAS LIFEBOAT STATION
Douglas is the birthplace of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The original Douglas boat was ordered by the Duke of Atholl and placed in service in 1802, making Douglas one of the earliest places in the British Isles to be provided with a lifeboat (before the RNLI’s formation).
In its long history, there have been two stations at Douglas, the first was established in 1802, which eventually closed in 1895. The second station, established in 1874, is the one that remains to this day. During the years 1824 to 1851 it is reported that 91 lives were saved by the Douglas lifeboat.
Sir William Hillary was awarded the Gold Medal as founder of the RNLI. His son, Augustus, also served on the crew and was awarded a Silver Medal for a service alongside his father.
In 1988 the station received their new Tyne class lifeboat, aptly named Sir William Hillary © RNLI

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to share the festivities worldwide by presenting our set of four stamps to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Dragon. This year the 10th February marks the beginning of one of the most widely celebrated festivals on the planet, represented by the dynamic and powerful dragon. We take the ancient legend of the The Four Dragons Tale as the inspiration for our commemoration.
The Dragons’ story derives from ancient folklore…
In a time long ago, when there were no rivers and lakes on Earth but only the Eastern Sea, there lived four dragons: the Pearl Dragon, the Yellow Dragon, the Long Dragon and the Black Dragon. Soaring through the skies one day, they saw people below laying out offerings and burning incense, they were praying for rain. There had been drought across the land, crops had not grown and the ground was parched and dry.
Seeing that the people would starve without their crops and a good rice harvest, the Long Dragon suggested to his friends that they visited the Jade Emperor in the Heavenly Palace to beg him for rain.
The powerful Jade Emperor ruled over the affairs of heaven on Earth and the sea. He was very angry to be interrupted from his pleasure of listening to the songs of the fairies by these demanding visitors. In a hurry to be rid of these anxious Dragons he told them to behave themselves and return to the sea, telling them he would send rain tomorrow.
Believing his words, the Dragons left the Emperor’s palace content that rain would fall and the crops would be saved. When ten days passed without rain, the Dragons saw that the people began to truly suffer, many being forced to eat tree bark and grass roots. Realising that the Jade Emperor did not care for his subjects, and only cared about pleasure, the four Dragons felt sorry for the people and decided that they must act quickly to save them.
The Long Dragon had the answer: working together, the four Dragons would scoop up the water of the seas into the clouds for it to fall like rain on the thirsty plants and people below. The four Dragons flew tirelessly back and forth, making the sky heavy with rain that soon fell to earth. The people celebrated wildly as the rain poured down onto the
arid ground. Wheat and sorghum stalks were re-vitalised and signs of green shoots began to emerge from the earth. However, when the God of the Sea heard of these events he reported immediately to the Jade Emperor, who was enraged that the Dragons had acted without his permission. He ordered the heavenly generals and their troops to arrest the Dragons and bring them to the palace. The Emperor then ordered the Mountain God to use his magic powers to set four mountains down upon the Dragons.
Even though they were imprisoned deep in the ground, they did not regret helping the people of China and resolved to make sure that water flowed forever through the land. They turned themselves into four rivers, which flowed past high mountains and deep valleys, crossing the land from the west to the east and finally emptying into the sea. In this way China’s four great rivers were formed: the Heilongjian (Black Dragon) in the far north; the Huanghe (Yellow River) in central China; the Changjiang (Yangtze, or Long River) to the south and the Zhujiang (Pearl) in the far south.
The Year of the Dragon
Thought to be auspicious, there are more people born in Dragon years than in any other of the zodiac. Signs most compatible with the Dragon are the Monkey and Rat while the Dog, Ox and Goat are least so. Lucky numbers are 1, 6 and 7 while 3, 8 and 9 are to be avoided.
The hyacinth brings good fortune to a Dragon and Spring is the luckiest season. Blue and red are thought to be unlucky colours, while yellow and green bring most happiness to a Dragon.

Isle of Man Post Office takes great pleasure in presenting a set of six stamps spotlighting a small selection of fish species of particular importance to Islanders, beautifully presented through the art of mosaic. As an island whose population was traditionally dependent on fishing and farming for survival, the condition of the marine environment and the local fishing industry has been of the highest importance for generations.
We have all become acutely aware of the decline in fish stocks worldwide and around our little Island especially. The fishing boats that Manx people were used to seeing moored several-deep along the quays and piers of the Island’s small ports and bays have almost all disappeared as times have changed in the worldwide fishing industry and in nature itself.
Countless hundred barrels of salt, clamour and activity has been replaced by a relatively sleepy silence. Decades of over-fishing and associated political controversies, along with climate and habitat evolution, have taken their toll. However, there is hope: last year, following a post-Brexit agreement, herring were landed by Manx fishing fleets for the first time in twenty-five years.
Manx mosaic artist Kimmy McHarrie has been producing nature-inspired work for decades and her love of the marine life of the Isle of Man has been a central theme. She was made aware of the gradual changes in the ecology and fishing industry on the Island at an early age as she was brought up with a sea view, facing the beach in Castletown and spent much of her time in boats and on the shoreline with a crab-hook in her hands. Hearing from
local fishermen and marine biologists about the decline of fish stocks in Manx waters prompted her to make a series of fish mosaics.
The fish that residents of all ages would catch by line from the piers and beaches of the Island were, and many still are, known to Islanders by their Manx names. We have included the Manx alongside the more common English and zoological Latin monikers on our stamps.
All species of fish featured are native to Isle of Man waters, the most notable being the Herring (or Skeddan in Manx) which, when split and smoked, becomes the famous Manx Kipper. Kimmy’s commitment to the subject is clear and she is fascinated that many of the names we still commonly use were derived directly from the Manx language while others were passed down the ages by word of mouth.
Because these species have been such a part of Manx people’s lives, and are so precious in our eco-system, we present these images of original artworks rendered in the appropriately luminescent medium of glass mosaic in a spirit of tribute and celebration.
