Celebrating 100 Years of the Manx Grand Prix
Yesterday the clocks skipped on an hour to confirm we are now on British Summer Time, however here is a view from our office window! Let’s hope this isn’t typical of the days ahead, although it is good for viewing the spectacular waterfalls featured on the latest issue from local artist Tracey Dean.
My goodness the Island has a lot to look forward to over the coming months as we celebrate not only the 50th Anniversary of the Isle of Man Post Office but also 100 years of the Manx Grand Prix, 150 years of the Isle of Man Steam Railway and 130 years of the Manx Electric Railway. We hope to welcome as many enthusiasts as possible to our Island to join in with celebrations.
Ahead of the release of the Manx Waterfalls collection we hosted artist Tracey Dean at Post Office Headquarters. Tracey, whose beautiful depictions of our Island’s waterfalls are seen throughout this issue, kindly brought along the original pieces seen through the stamps.
Tracey explained “I was delighted that Isle of Man Post Office has asked me to provide my paintings for yet another stamp collection. It fills me with immense pride and knowing that the images will also be used in Susan’s book is just the icing on the cake.”
Let’s also look forward to the future and the reign of King Charles III, our postal tribute to recognise his accession to the throne includes special postmarks for the day of his Coronation which we hope will be of particular interest to collectors of postal history.
With thanks and all good wishes,
Maxine and all the team at Stamps & Coins

Actress Jane Asher, from Kneale’s The Stone Tape (1972) Andy Murray, author of Into the Unknown: The Fantastic Life of Nigel KnealeKing Charles’s coronation on 6th May 2023, marks the beginning of a role that he has spent his entire lifetime preparing for. The King had an incomparable role model in the late Queen and will derive great strength from the support of his wife Camilla, Queen Consort, who will be crowned at his side. His tenure begins a new chapter for the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, to which the King has sworn devoted service. It will be a different monarchy, that embraces changes in society and global politics, and even in the early days of his reign we can see that much has changed.
The coronation ceremony, conducted at Westminster Abbey by the Archbishop of Canterbury, will share many elements of the traditional service that has taken place at the Abbey for more than 900 years. The recognition, the oath, the anointing, the investiture (which includes the crowning), the enthronement and the homage will have subtle changes that respect the spirit of our times. In this issue we have combined the hopes and prayers of a generation: the King, his Queen, the royal cypher, the life he has lived so far, and his coronation. As King Charles III stands on the balcony of Buckingham Palace alongside Queen Camilla and the royal family, he forms a new accord with our nation, the Commonwealth and all people of different nations and faiths; we pray for his reign and say together, God Save the King!

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a collection of stamps celebrating the natural beauty of our Island’s glens and their waterfalls. There are eighteen mountain and coastal national glens across the Island which have been preserved and maintained in a semi-natural state by the Manx Government. They are open to the public throughout the year and are much loved attractions for both locals and tourists.
The Manx glens, the valleys carved out by the timeless flow of streams or rivers, are a prominent feature of the Island landscape and many contain beautiful waterfalls of differing sizes and shapes.
Early tourists in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries praised their picturesque and romantic beauty. Glen Maye in particular was singled out for its ‘very romantic and beautiful cascade, which leaps down the neighbouring mountains, till it approaches a steep perpendicular rock; from whence, with much rapidity, it throws itself into the vale below. The fall is from a considerable height; and its picturesque beauty, and wild melody, receive an additional effect from the solitude of the surrounding scenery’.
The ‘quiet rural beauty’ of Laxey Glen was also singled out as charming by these early tourists, though it was the clear rivulet pouring over jutting rocks and large boulder stones below the main road, the Laxey Quarry Falls, that caught their admiration, not the national glen above the main road visited today.
The opening of the Manx Electric Railway in the late Victorian period allowed visitors to ‘Manxland’ to easily reach the glens along the east coast. Here Ballaglass is perhaps the archetypal example of a Manx glen. Its rocky stream bed descends through wooded hillside, the river now gushing, now slowing in pools. The waterfalls are relatively low and gentle; paths follow and cross the stream on the descent. It is said to be the locals’ favourite glen, with some justification.
Dhoon Glen, also on the east coast, is much more challenging, being steep and deep, but the magnificent waterfall, the Inneen Vooar (the Big Girl) is reward enough. One of the highest falls on the Island at over 40 metres (130 feet), it splits in two over the rock face and falls in ribbons to a large pool in a cavern-like glade of ferns and moss. The path and stream continue down to the shingle shore guarded by impressive jutting rocks.
Victorian visitors came in by boat in their thousands to see the waterfall.
In a more secluded inland location on the west coast is dramatic Spooyt Vane (White Spout), the highest waterfall on the Island, at around 50 metres (164 feet), a torrent of water falling through a narrow gap in the rock walls in several drops, the lower drop spreading across the rock face before plunging into a deep pool from which the beautifully clear water flows gently out, curving round a pebble shore when the season is dry. The semi-circle of rock walls enfolding Spooyt Vane are green with spurge and many different kinds of fern. Access is by kind permission of the landowner.
In the Victorian visitor boom, many of the glens were ‘improved’ to provide refreshments and entertainments, as well as the experience of exploring natural beauty. Dhoon was one and Glen Helen, in the centre of the Island, was another. Extensive tree and ornamental shrub planting was carried out and it was converted to public pleasure grounds with swings, croquet and skittles, with an entrance fee of 4 old pence (2p in today’s money). Fishing was one shilling (5p) extra. Here visitors could also enjoy the spectacle of the long narrow ribbon of the Rhenass waterfall from both above on a long-gone bridge and below before repairing via winding paths and rustic bridges to a picturesque Swiss chalet to take sustenance.
Nowadays the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture is responsible for managing the Island’s 18 National Glens. Its proud association with these popular venues extends back more than 70 years. The Department continues with a rolling programme of maintenance and access improvements.
The seclusion of many of the glens provides some of the most enchanting woodland walking you will find anywhere, with the reward of one of the most mesmerising sights of nature, a waterfall in full flow.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this landmark set of six stamps marking significant career highlights in the long and illustrious life of world-renowned Isle of Man author Nigel Kneale (1922-2006). His influence on generations of writers and film-makers remains as strong as ever more than a century after his birth. The Isle of Man is very fortunate that his papers have been entrusted to the Manx National Heritage Library and Archives for the study and enjoyment of this, and generations to come.
Thomas Nigel Kneale is one of the most celebrated authors of the modern TV and film age. He was a prolific writer and, in addition to his own works of psychological horror and science fiction, wrote numerous adaptations of contemporary stories for film and television in a career that spanned almost sixty years.
Kneale was born in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria to Manx parents: journalist William Thomas (known to his family as Tom) Kneale and his wife Lilian, née Kewley. The family returned to the Island in 1928 when Nigel’s father became assistant editor on the Isle of Man Examiner . In 1930 a second son, Bryan was born, later to become a renowned artist. Nigel’s father acquired the Mona’s Herald newspaper in partnership with his brother Robert G Kneale.
By the age of twenty-four Kneale had written a number of short stories in his spare time and, in 1946, made his first broadcast on BBC Radio, performing a live reading of Tomato Cain. In the same year he moved to London where he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), followed by two years’ work at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. During this decade he made further broadcasts and published Tomato Cain and Other Stories in 1949, for which he won the Somerset Maugham Award the following year. Kneale’s first professional script was the radio drama The Long Stairs in 1950. The next year, he gained a job as a staff writer at the BBC where he remained until 1956. Thereafter he was able to focus on his writing and freelance work.
In 1953 Kneale wrote the ground-breaking The Quatermass Experiment, the first popular science fiction television series. The lead character, Professor Bernard Quatermass, was reprised by Kneale in numerous televisions series, films and radio plays from 1953 until 2005, and it is for these that Kneale is most widely known.
Kneale was prolific and wrote many other works of horror and science-fiction for film and TV such as The Year of the Sex Olympics (1967) and The Stone Tape (1972). He also adapted novels for the screen: 1984 (1954) and The Woman in Black (1989) for example. The chilling series of eight stories for ITV, Beasts (1978), remains highly influential. He was unafraid to experiment with many other genres, as evidenced by Kinvig (1981), his sole situation comedy. After 1974 Kneale spent the rest of his television career mostly writing scripts for Independent Television (ITV), contributing to series such as Sharpe (1993-1997) and Kavanagh QC (1995-2001).
During the early 1950s, Kneale met talented writer Judith Kerr, daughter of a refugee German theatre critic, Alfred Kerr and composer Julia, née Weismann. Kneale and Kerr married in 1954 and had one daughter, Tacy (b.1958), an actress, painter and film prop artist and, in 1960, a son, Matthew, now a renowned writer. Kerr went on to become a hugely successful children’s author, publishing works such as The Tiger Who Came to Tea (1968) and the Mog series (1970-2015). In 1962 the couple settled in Barnes, London, remaining there for the rest of their lives.

David Wright, author of 100 Years of the Manx Grand Prix – Racing out of the Shadows writes…
The past century of racing has seen changes to the roads raced over, to the machines used and to the speeds achieved, but one feature of the ‘Manx’ that remains constant is that winners do not receive prize money –they race for the love of the sport.
Initially a single race called the Amateur Motorcycle Championship, the event quickly became known as the Manx Grand Prix (MGP) and the number of races now totals five at each meeting. Aimed at amateur riders, the MGP has nevertheless provided a stepping stone for many aiming for a professional race career. Among notable names to come out of a century of racing at the ‘Manx’ are Geoff Duke, Phil Read, Carl Fogarty, Steve Hislop and Michael Dunlop.
LEN RANDLES 1923 80p
Len Randles rode his 500cc side-valve Sunbeam to win the 1923 Amateur race and the Crookall Trophy. The Sunbeam carried leather tool-boxes, for machine reliability was questionable and a retirement rate of 30% quite usual. Len returned to win in 1924, when lap speeds reached 60mph.
ALBERT MOULE 1937 80p
Contested mainly by machines from British manufacturers, the MGP saw substantial increases in speeds through the 1930s. Albert Moule is shown on his new Norton, a make that dominated racing in that period.
RON LANGSTON 1959 £1.28
Ron Langston riding to second place in the 1959 Junior MGP. The classic lines of the Manx Norton are shown to advantage in unstreamlined form and although streamlining was in general use elsewhere by 1959, it was not permitted at the Manx until 1962.
CHAS MORTIMER 1968 £1.28
Chas Mortimer rides Ballaugh Bridge on his 250cc Italian Aermacchi four-stroke. The late 1960s saw all classes
Isle of Man Post Office is proud to present this collection of stamps celebrating the centenary of the Manx Grand Prix. First run by the Manx Motor Cycle Club in 1923, a century later the event is still going strong under the same organisers and running over the same 37¾ mile Isle of Man Mountain Course.
facing increased competition from Japanese twincylinder, two-stroke machines. Such growth in use of two-strokes represented a major change in MGP racing, where four-strokes previously ruled.
JOHN KNOWLES 1976 £1.51
A regular MGP competitor from 1971 to 1982. This image from 1976 shows that with his Yamaha TZ350E he had joined the two-stroke hordes who swamped the Manx in the 1970s. The racing of two-strokes brought very different sights, sounds and smells, and also increased speeds. By 1979 the Senior MGP lap record stood to Clive Watts at 105.27mph.
DAVE ROPER 1990 £1.51
In 1983 the organisers introduced the racing of Classic motorcycles to the MGP meeting. Multiple wins went to riders like Bob Heath and Bill Swallow, while American Dave Roper led several races but had to settle for second place finishes. He is shown leaving Creg-ny-Baa on an AJS 7R.
CAROLYNN SELLS 2009 £1.75
Carolynn Sells became the first woman to win a MGP when she rode to victory in the 2009 Ultra-Lightweight race on a 400cc Yamaha FZR. It was an historic moment in Island racing. Later extending her role at the Manx, she became a voluntary ambassador for the races, then a Rider Liaison Officer and committee member.
NATHAN HARRISON 2019 £1.75
Today’s MGP runs over 4 laps. A rider stops to refuel upon completion of 2 laps and has to sit while the pit crew refills the petrol tank, cleans screen and visor, checks the bike for any problems and perhaps advises of race position. Here Nathan Harrison has tanked up and is being sent on his way at the 2019 MGP, where he took a double race victory in the Junior and Senior events, setting lap speeds of over 122mph.
