Autumn 2023

In this issue... Birds of Prey by Jeremy Paul • Manx Winter Wildlife by Rowan Corlett Back to the Moon • The Coronation of HM King Charles III and HM Queen Camilla Long Live the King!

Welcome to our Autumn 2023 Newsletter

Dear Friends Sitting in our office today it’s definitely showing signs that winter is just around the corner, albeit we had a lovely September especially on the 2nd September when we held our 50th Anniversary all Island Treasure Hunt. It was a lot of fun with all the questions based around many areas of the Post Office. Looking at our Year Collection for 2023 it’s clear we have recorded a lot of change; the new cypher for the reign of King Charles III, Back to the Moon and moving into the next chapter of Isle of Man Stamps & Coins. Thankfully we have also kept true to our traditions; Birds of Prey by Jeremy Paul has received wide acclaim as have the Kneale Archives, brought together by Emma Cooke of EJC Design and my colleague Paul. Looking forward to January 2024 and RNLI 200 when everyone will come together to celebrate and pay tribute to the selfless service members make to saving lives at sea. It has been an honour to work

very closely with our friends at Guernsey and Jersey Post along with the in-house design team at the RNLI to bring a unified collection together, all of which are in support of the charity. So there is much to look forward to in 2024, but most importantly it is to serve your needs as a collector of Isle of Man Stamps & Coins. With all good wishes and sincere thanks from all the Team

Maxine and all the team at Stamps & Coins

POST OFFICE JUBILEE CELEBRATED AT MANX MUSEUM On Monday 17th July the Postal Jubilee exhibition was officially opened to the public at the Manx Museum. Curated to share the extensive postal history of the Isle of Man, the exhibition ran through to 24th September. Many IOMPO colleagues past and present loaned exhibits to form the display, which was curated by Paul Ford with the help of our 50th Anniversary Committee. We were delighted to host a corporate event at the exhibition on 19th September, welcoming partners from across the business to celebrate our anniversary. Many thanks to all those who visited and enjoyed the exhibition and to Manx National Heritage for allowing the use of the space. Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this selection of six noble avian predators which can be seen by the eagle-eyed in the skies around our Island. Once again, we have brought renowned wildlife artist Jeremy Paul together with noted ornithologist Chris Sharpe MBE to bring these wonderful creatures alive on our stamps.

KESTREL Falco tinnunculus

MERLIN Falco columbarius

A hovering Kestrel is a joy to watch, constant tiny movements of the wings and tail, adjusting to slight changes in the wind, allowing the head to remain almost motionless as it searches for prey below. Males, as illustrated, are distinctive, their blue-grey head, rump and tail contrasting sharply with a deep chestnut back and upper wings. Widely distributed on the Island throughout the year, the Kestrel is also a partial migrant, some birds moving from and through the Island during August to September.

The Merlin seldom breeds on the Island, rarely being seen in summer. Sightings markedly increase in autumn when migrants, mainly from Iceland, arrive for the winter. This is the smallest of our falcons, the males being not much larger than a Blackbird Turdus merula. Despite its diminutive stature it is a fearless predator, not averse to tackling prey larger than itself. Watching one hunt a constantly ‘jinking’ small wader over the coast provokes an ever-changing desire over who should be the victor.

PEREGRINE FALCON Falco peregrinus

SPARROWHAWK Accipiter nisus

Appearing on the Manx coat of arms, the Peregrine Falcon has a long association with the Island. In 1405, King Henry IV gave the Isle of Man to Sir John Stanley, conditional upon two falcons being given to him and every future King upon their coronation, a tradition that continued until 1821. Nowadays, the Peregrine, in common with all our birds of prey, is protected by law with an estimated annual breeding population of in excess of 25 pairs.

Our most common and widespread bird of prey, its diet consists of birds and its hunting strategy is to fly low and fast along a hedge before diving through a gap to take advantage of the element of surprise. When targeting ‘our’ garden birds this does not always make it popular; it is however all part of the wider balance of nature. One cannot help but to admire their ability, the large females more than capable of taking a Woodpigeon, Columba palumbus.

BUZZARD Buteo buteo

HEN HARRIER Circus cyaneus

After a presumed long absence from the Island, breeding was confirmed in 2010, though since then numbers of breeding pairs have increased significantly and they are now a common sight over much of the Island. It is our largest bird of prey, most often seen soaring on broad wings, the high pitched ‘mewing’ call often being the first thing to draw your attention. It may also be seen sitting motionless on a post or in a field, waiting to spot movement of beetles, part of its varied diet.

A male Hen Harrier quartering low over a heather moor in search of food is one of the most evocative sights of our uplands, the blue-grey plumage contrasting sharply with the muted tones of the hills. The adult male plumage contrasts also with that of the female, which in common with young birds has an overall brown plumage with a distinctive white rump. Hen Harrier first bred on the Island in 1977, the census of 2022 finding 38-42 territories, suggesting a stable population.

New Collection Issue Date: 26.10.23

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to share this charming winter collection of six animals seen through the eyes of local illustrator Rowan Corlett. Robin at Old Ballaugh Church Cleeau-Yiarg

Robins have been associated with Christmas ever since Victorian times. Victorian postmen, who were known as ‘Robin Red-breasts’ because of their red waistcoats, are thought to be the inspiration for so many robins appearing on our Christmas cards. Robins can have up to 3 broods a year and their eggs are light blue. There are 2 churches in Ballaugh, however, this is the older of the two. It is thought to have been on the site since the introduction to Christianity on the Island and was rebuilt as it is today in 1717. Loaghtan Sheep at Cregneash Keyrrey Loaghtyn

The Manx Loaghtan is a rare breed of sheep native to the Isle of Man. They are best known for their four (sometimes six) horns. The word Loaghtan translates from Manx as ‘mouse-brown’, distinctively describing the colour of the sheep. Cregneash is an old village near The Sound. It was one of the last strongholds of the Manx language and customs which characterised the crofting way of life. Mountain Hare at Peel Castle Mwaagh ny Sleityn

The Mountain Hare lives in upland areas where it grazes on vegetation, the bark of young trees and bushes on heathlands. Mountain hares do not dig burrows but shelter in ‘forms’; shallow depressions in the ground or grass. Numbers of mountain hares are in decline across the British Isles due to a loss of habitat and climate change. Peel Castle, the backdrop to the illustration, was built in the 11th century by the Vikings under the rule of King Magnus Barefoot. 6

Puffin at The Sound Pibbin

Puffins have recently returned to the Isle of Man for the first time in nearly 30 years after model decoys were used to lure them back to nest on The Calf of Man. Puffins are also known as the ‘Sea Parrot’ due to their brightly coloured bills. The Sound is the Island’s most southern point known for its spectacular views of the Calf of Man, birdlife and wildlife. Manx Cat at Tynwald Hill Kayt Manninagh

The Manx cat is known for having no tail. They have a naturally occurring mutation of the spine which shortens the tail, resulting in a range of tail lengths from normal to tailless. They also have longer hind legs that make them have a similar gait to a rabbit when they run. Tynwald Hill is a four-tiered hill and is a signal of the Isle of Man’s independence as a self-governing crown dependency. It is the traditional meeting place of the Manx parliamentary assembly, dating back at least to the late first millennium AD. Seal in Laxey Bay Raun

Grey seals and common (or harbour) seals are found around the shores of the Isle of Man. They are both protected species and enjoy feasting on fish, squid, whelks, crabs and mussels. Grey seals have their pups in late autumn and are recognisable by their white fluffy coats. They stay on land until they have tripled their body weight and lose all of their white fur. Common seals pups, on the other hand, are born in the summer and can swim when they are only a few hours old. Laxey is a seaside village, known for the Laxey Wheel, or Lady Isabella. It is the largest working water wheel in the world and is spotted in the background of the artwork.

New Collection Issue Date: 06.11.23 Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this collection of eight stamps completing our trilogy of issues studying humanity in space. Chris Stott writes ... What once seemed like science fiction is rapidly turning into science fact. For twenty years we have thought it normal for people to live and work above us on the International Space Station; children born today will think of people living and working in the Moon as normal too. Let that sink in, we are now actively working to settle the Moon. Leveraging a myriad of exponential technologies, humanity is returning to the Moon. As I write, the largest English-speaking democracy in the world, India, has successfully landed at the South Pole of the Moon; three missions from the second largest Englishspeaking democracy in the world, the United States, are also preparing for launch. In total more than 130 missions from over twenty nations are scheduled for return to the Moon in the next decade, including Britain and the Isle of Man. China has been active now at the South Pole of the Moon for over 1,700 consecutive days. This time the key word is ‘return’. We landed on the Moon more than fifty years ago and we have continued to explore it, discovering more about the resources, energy and so much more that our largest satellite can provide to all of us. In my first sentence I said, ‘in the Moon’, and that was no mistake, you do not live on the Moon, you live in it. On the surface of the Moon you would face radiation, micrometeorites, and a day night cycle where two weeks of day light give you temperatures of positive two hundred and fifty degrees celsius, and a two week lunar night plunges you into temperatures near minus two hundred degrees celsius. Our people will live ‘in the Moon’, away from the day night cycle, in near constant temperatures and safe from radiation and micrometeorites. Our dwellings will be in the caves and lava tubes below the surface. Solar panels, communications arrays and landing pads will remain on the surface and using 3D printing, robotics, and inflatable technologies we will build our habitats in the lava tubes. Some of these lava tubes are ninety kilometres long, a thousand meters wide, and eighty meters deep; they can fit multiple Manhattans and even the Isle of Man with room to spare. That’s a lot of living space. Isle of Man technology will be on every mission; our own thriving space industry is at the heart of advances in communications technology and engineering. The Moon provides an incredible platform to back up our global data in a safe, secure, accessible location, meeting every regulatory need for data sovereignty. 8

The Moon is so perfect for our needs that if it wasn’t there, we’d have to build it. Akin to ships on the high seas there will be settlements operating, living, and working under US law, Swiss, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, British, and of course Manx law. All these choices will impact the work they conduct from product liability to intellectual property, employment contracts to trade law. Settlements will use local materials for construction, mining minerals for 3D printing settlements and structures; this has already been done on Earth using lunar regolith simulants. Our energy will come from the sun and from the water deposits that exist on the Moon. Water, broken down into Hydrogen and Oxygen provides us with fuel, air and energy. Growing food is also key to our survival, for recycling our precious air and of course, eating. NASA is far along in testing with award winning 3D printing company Icon; together with architects BIG, they will print ‘Project Olympus’, NASA’s lunar base at the South Lunar Pole. Working with our companies Lonestar and Eayst Noa, BIG has completed the preconcept studies for our first lunar settlement, the City of New Hope, that features in these beautiful stamps. People walked on the Moon fifty years ago. Tomorrow they will do so again and this time they will live and work there too. Science fiction today is simply science fact tomorrow. Just when we need it most, our Moon, our faithful neighbour, is there for us. Here’s to our next frontiers… Chris Stott A Manx American at the forefront of the race to the Moon. He is married to Nicole Stott, NASA Astronaut, Aquanaut, Artist, and Philanthropist. Alongside the late Sir Arthur C Clarke, Chris is Chair Emeritus of the SSPI, the largest professional association in the global space industry. He is a published Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, an Honorary Member of the Isle of Man Astronomical Society, and the co-founder of the Institute of Space Commerce. Serving on facility at the International Space University in Strasbourg, and on the University’s Board of Advisors, Chris has guest lectured at Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and the University of Houston on Space Law and Regulation. A Member of the Reform Club in London and the Explorers Club in New York, he is also a multi award winning documentary filmmaker. When he can’t sleep, he reads his own resume.

New Collection Issue Date: 14.11.23

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of seven stamps to celebrate the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III Lord of Mann and Queen Camilla which took place on the 6th May 2023 Royal correspondent Robert Jobson writes… On Saturday 6th May 2023 the world watched in awe on their television screens as Britain laid on a Coronation full of pomp, pageantry and splendour for King Charles III. Renowned Sunday Times bestselling author and award-winning royal correspondent Robert Jobson looks back at the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla… It was at the Coronation, with his Queen crowned alongside him, in which the King celebrated our diversity as well as our sense of community. It was a magnificent ceremony that acknowledged the past, but also very much looked to the future. Resplendent in his Order of the Garter Robe over his ceremonial Welsh Guards uniform, William knelt before his father, who sat on St Edward’s chair as he pledged his allegiance to him. “I, William, Prince of Wales, pledge my loyalty to you, and faith and truth I will bear unto you, as your liege man of life and limb so help me God,” he declared before touching the crown. Steeped in 1,000 years of religious symbolism the service had several key parts. First The Recognition saw the King turn to each of the four points of the compass to be recognised as the true monarch. The monarch was then presented with the new Coronation Bible which he kissed before taking the Oath, which included a new line in which he pledged to “foster an environment in which people of all faiths and beliefs may live freely”. The most sacred and symbolic part of the ceremony took place behind screens when the King took off his Robe of State before sitting in the Coronation Chair. Holy oil was then poured from the eagle-shaped ampulla into the 12th century coronation spoon, for the Archbishop of Canterbury to anoint King Charles on his “hand, breast and head”. Charles was then presented with his regalia, starting with the 1661 golden spurs, then the Jewelled Sword of Offering followed, before a small velvet bag, holding 100 newly minted 50 pence pieces featuring the King. 10

Finally the moment came for the Archbishop of Canterbury to place the St Edward’s Crown upon the King’s head. The silence was palpable inside the abbey and The King would wear it for just 20 minutes before switching to the Imperial State Crown. King Charles III and Queen Camilla then returned to the palace in a procession in the Gold State Coach. They waved along with their family and the pages from the Buckingham Palace balcony and even gave the adoring public an encore.

His Majesty King Charles III Lord of Mann On 6th May 2023, communities across the Isle of Man came together to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, Lord of Mann, and Queen Camilla. People of all generations congregated across the Island in celebration of this historic day, with public screenings of the Coronation held in Castletown, Port Erin and Ramsey whilst numerous street parties were hosted across towns and villages. Meanwhile in London, Lieutenant Governor Sir John Lorimer, the King’s representative and Chief Minister Alfred Cannon attended the Coronation on behalf of the Isle of Man whilst members of the local community also represented the population. Firefighter Amber Carridge from the Isle of Man Fire & Rescue Service (FRS) attended as an official street liner for the procession. Amber was joined by Louise Kennaugh and Richard Hewitt representing the Isle of Man Constabulary, Eddie Littlewood representing St John’s Ambulance and Cerys Mudie, representing the Sea Cadets. A handcrafted wooden bowl by local artist Graham Hall was gifted to King Charles III on behalf of the people of the Isle of Man in celebration of the Coronation. The Isle of Man Post Office was honoured to hand deliver the gift to Buckingham Palace.
