Dear Friends of Isle of Man Stamps & Coins,
Welcome to our first newsletter of 2025. The New Year came in with a very cold blast from the north and while we continue to have icy conditions and some snow (the Snaefell Mountain Road has been closed for a few days) it does tend to bring beautiful sunny days.
Thanks so much for all those who commented on the Churches sheetlet gift to standing order customers. I really enjoyed affixing the Victorian Christmas stamps to my cards and found even more enjoyment when receiving cards from friends around the globe.
Amongst the new collections within this newsletter is a special tribute to the career of Sir Mark Cavendish KBE, the greatest sprint cyclist of all time. He has been an inspiration and role model for so many young people on our Island and we join in wishing him every success for his future away from competitive cycling.
It always gives us great pleasure to work with those based on our Island who bring local knowledge and the ‘extra ingredient’ to the forefront of our issues, none more so than those featured in this newsletter.
In January Isle of Man Post Office staff, with the help of FC Isle of Man volunteers, were delighted to once again support Hospice Isle of Man through the annual Treecycle campaign. Post vans travelled across the Island to collect 11,460kg of unwanted Christmas trees to be recycled, raising a staggering £15,400 and kicking off the fundraising year!
We are proud to celebrate our Island’s links with China and the 2025 Year of the Snake, as well as the 60th anniversary of the Isle of Man Arts Council and the work of Archibald Knox in this landmark issue.
There really is something for everyone and I hope you enjoy these issues as much as we have all enjoyed preparing them for your pleasure.
All good wishes,
Maxine and all the team at Stamps & Coins
Isle of Man Stamps & Coins was delighted to support the 2024 Banbury Festival of Stamps. Arranged by the Banbury Stamp Society, the annual event welcomes a range of philatelists from experts to beginners. We were pleased to support the festival through the donation of collectables that were included in the raffle.
We are delighted to issue a collection of ten stamps produced in collaboration with Manx National Heritage and the Archibald Knox Forum in celebration of the KNOX: Order & Beauty exhibition, the world’s largest exhibition of works by Archibald Knox, to be showcased in the National Art Gallery at the Manx Museum from 5th April 2025 – 1st March 2026.
Stamp issue text author and Manx National Heritage Curator for Art Katie King said:
“The Post Office played a pivotal role in Archibald Knox’s celebrated Liberty story, making this stamp issue a fitting tribute to mark KNOX: Order & Beauty, the world’s largest Knox exhibition being staged at the Manx Museum. Between 1901 and 1905, Archibald Knox returned to the Isle of Man from London to focus exclusively on his designs for Liberty & Co. of London.
From his cottage in Sulby, he would sketch and colour thousands of designs for homeware and jewellery, carefully crafting each detail. These designs were then dispatched from the nearby Sulby Post Office, travelling by boat to London for Liberty’s approval. This exchange often involved a dynamic back-and-forth with manufacturers, with Knox overseeing every detail to ensure the final product met his high standards. In some cases, Liberty even sent precious stones to Sulby for his approval. The whole process was done via the Post Office, which served as his vital link between the tranquillity of Sulby and the vibrant design world of London.”

In celebration of the Isle of Man’s historic cultural and trading links with China, Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this collection of four stamps.
The Isle of Man has a proud tradition of establishing long-held business, cultural, and political relationships with nations around the world. This is certainly the case with China, where connections date back more than 200 years.
Isle of Man-based Strix, a global leader in the design, manufacture and supply of kettle safety controls, opened its first office in the region in 1989. In 1997, the award-winning Manx business, which trades worldwide, opened a new factory in Guangzhou. In 2021, its latest manufacturing facility in that region, situated in Zengchen, became fully operational.
Since those early days of contact by sea, maritime connections between the Isle of Man and China have remained strong. In 1997, China bestowed ‘Most Favoured Nation’ status on vessels registered with the Isle of Man Shipping Registry (IOMSR). Many clients of the IOMSR dry-dock and build vessels in China, leading to the Registry’s appointment of its first permanent representative in China, Jonathan Kingdon, in 2021.
Of course, there is more to the relationship between the nations than trade…
The Isle of Man has hosted diplomatic guests including Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom His Excellency Liu Xiaoping in 2013, Minister Counsellor Wang Yongli, head of the education section at China’s London embassy, and Consul General Li, of the Manchester Consulate of the People’s Republic of China.
Consul General Li’s visit included a tour of the Isle of Man Post Office Headquarters, where he was presented with a framed set of Isle of Man Post Office Chinese stamp issues in recognition of the close cultural and historic ties between the nations.
In turn, China has hosted several delegations from the Isle of Man, with members including serving chief ministers, ministers and business and cultural representatives to the area.
In addition, just as China has become home to people from the Isle of Man, the Island has welcomed many Chinese nationals to its shores. The contribution of the Chinese community to the Isle of Man and strong links between the nations was perhaps best exemplified by the establishment, in 2013, of the Isle of Man Chinese Association.
The Nan Sha District, Guangzhou, China is part of the Greater Bay Area, a key economic zone in southern China, and serves as a hub for shipping, trade, and high-tech industries.
The district hosts the Nan Sha Free Trade Zone, which promotes international trade and investment.
The set of four Nan Sha stamps, showcases many of the features and traditions of the NanSha landmark. The stamp set consists of Technology and Innovation, Opening up (global outreach and trade), the global stamp exhibition and the city of NanSha and Harmony.

Isle of Man Post Office is delighted to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Snake with this set of four stamps beautifully illustrated by local artist Jo Davies. The 2025 Year of the Snake is the latest instalment in our ongoing series marking the Chinese Lunar New Year.
Jo Davies writes…
2025 is the year of the Wood Snake and the artwork in this collection reflects the symbols associated with the snake, combined with those traditionally used in celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year. The snake symbolises light and dark and is believed to offer protection from negative forces. It sheds its skin and appears to have been reborn and is often associated in cultures with transformation and rebirth.
Each Chinese New Year corresponds to one of the five elements from Chinese culture; earth, wood, fire, water and metal. These are drawn from Wu Xing, a philosophy which describes the relationship and interdependence of all things to create balance that is symbolised by Yin and Yang.
Flowers are used as gifts and decorations in the Chinese New Year, and they feature lavishly across this collection of stamps to celebrate joy, prosperity, hope and renewal across the world. These stamps celebrate these themes to deliver positive messages for the year ahead.
The elements of metal and wood create harmony, combined in the Pipa, the Chinese lute that has been played for more than 2,000 years to create joyous classical music as we enter a new year.
The markings on snakes are a form of both camouflague and identification and in these stamps the snake’s decorative symbols include the triskelion, an ancient Celtic motif that appears on the Manx flag, identified with the Isle of Man. A snake coils around the wooden branches of the plum tree bringing growth and prosperity, allowing it to flourish with blossom.
The Lantern Festival symbolises the banishing of darkness and bringing of hope into the year ahead promoting peace and forgiveness. Shaped like our earth and featuring flames to symbolise fire, the lantern stamp with its red and gold invites good fortune and happiness.
Water symbolises life-giving and new beginnings and in many stories is connected with Mother Nature and creation. Each drop is more valuable than gold. The water lily which opens and closes each day represents power and rebirth bringing hope for the future.
Those born during the year of the snake are said to be cheerful, witty, sociable and kind, with many friends and a forgiving nature.
The snake years are: 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013 and 2025. Famous people born in the year of the snake include Mahatma Gandhi, Bob Dylan, J.K. Rowling, Taylor Swift and Prince George.

Isle of Man Post Office takes great pleasure in presenting an insight into the diverse and varied areas of the Manx cultural community supported by the Isle of Man Arts Council to celebrate its 60th anniversary.
The impact of the IOM Arts Council reaches all corners of the Island. Founded in 1965 to promote, invest, inspire, enable and champion creativity, the Council is made up of an entirely voluntary membership representing all aspects of the arts, chaired by a member of Tynwald.
As a sponsored body of the Department of Education, Sport and Culture, and funded by lottery tax, it provides funding support and advice to develop the Island’s strategy for arts and culture working with a wide variety of individuals, schools, groups and venues across the community. It plays a vital role in enabling the arts to thrive on the Island. Since 2020, more than £1 million has been awarded.
Chair Sarah Maltby MHK said “The Isle of Man Arts Council has played a significant role in the development of Manx arts and culture for 60 years and will continue to support creativity in the future. Our creative community surprises and inspires so many of us every day, enhancing all our lives.”
THE STAMPS:
THEATRE – THE GAIETY THEATRE, PHOTOGRAPH BY JADE BOYLAN
Funding has long championed theatre, providing support to all local amateur theatre groups on the Island which perform to the highest of standards.
The Gaiety Theatre also hosts the sell-out Isle of Man Arts Council Annual Lecture, with recent guests Louis Theroux, Kevin McCloud and Dame Joanna Lumley, allowing Manx audiences the opportunity to learn and engage with creative icons.
CONCERTS – THE MIGHTY WURLITZER
The Wurlitzer organ installed in the Villa Marina Arcade is an outstanding and rare example of its type and regular concerts take place as part of the IOM Arts Council “Summer Music Season”, which also features local brass bands.
SCULPTURE – THE DANCERS BY JOHN MULVEY, PHOTOGRAPH BY STEPHEN CORRAN
“The Dancers” sculpture by John Mulvey was commissioned by the IOM Arts Council in 2020. The sculpture depicts two dancing figures, a lasting tribute to the thousands who have danced at the Gaiety Theatre and Villa Marina in the last 125 years as performers, competitors and audiences.
COMMUNITY ARTS – CAROUSEL HORSES, SILVERDALE, PHOTOGRAPH BY SUZIE WALKER
Working in conjunction with the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (DEFA), the IOM Arts Council funded the restoration of the
much-loved carousel horses on the Victorian waterpowered merry-go-round at Silverdale Glen. Local sign writers Sneaky Weasel used their painting and design talents to revive the colours to bring renewed joy to the carousel.
PUBLIC ART – PARLIAMENT STREET BY KAROLINA PAWLOWSKA, PHOTOGRAPH BY JADE BOYLAN
The IOM Arts Council provides funding support for public art, bringing bursts of colour to our Island.

EXHIBITIONS – “ELLYN” CURATED BY OLIVIA SAVAGE
The idea of “Ellyn” emerged as part of the learning experience shared throughout our community during the Pandemic. The 2021 exhibition captured a snapshot in time of the work of many of prominent Manx artists, but also promoted new talent. It was curated by former Arts Council Graduate Intern Olivia Savage.

Isle of Man Post Office it pleased to share this collection of ten stamps created in collaboration with Manx National Heritage and the Archibald Knox Forum. This issue is inspired by the KNOX: Order & Beauty exhibition, celebrating the life and work of Archibald Knox, one of the most influential British designers of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The exhibition showcases more than 200 pieces of Knox’s work, offering a unique opportunity to explore the lasting impact of Knox’s designs and artworks, which continue to inspire artists and designers today. Ten standout pieces featured in the exhibition are shared throughout this issue.
Katie King, Manx National Heritage Curator for Art writes…
Born on the Isle of Man in 1864, Knox was deeply inspired by the Island’s natural beauty and its unique Celtic and Norse heritage. His intricate designs, marked by complex interlace patterns, reflect these influences. After studying and teaching at the Douglas School of Art, and teaching at the Douglas Grammar School, he left the Island to teach art in London, where his professional association with The Silver Studio and Liberty & Co. would mark a turning point in his career. His beautiful designs and Liberty’s reputation as a defining force in fashionable good taste created a match made in heaven. Knox became a pioneer of modern design, blending the Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau, and Celtic Revival into a distinctive style.
Designed by Archibald Knox in the early 1900s, this brooch was created for the jewellery range of Liberty & Co., the London-based department store. Knox moved to London in the late 1890s to teach at an art school, and it was here that he began his association with Liberty, designing exclusive pieces for its highend clientele.
MNH Collection (1984-0106)
Cymric Silver Pepper Castor
Stamped with the earliest known hallmark for Liberty’s Cymric range (1898), this small pepper castor appears in the first Liberty Cymric catalogue, under the name Thorian (a Norse reference to Thor). This piece is a direct link between Archibald Knox, the Silver Studio, and the early Cymric collection.
Private Collection
In 1913, Knox returned to the Isle of Man and alongside his day job as an art teacher he was in great demand locally as a book illustrator, designer of illuminated addresses and public memorials. This design, created for a printing block, was used in Castle Rushen (1927) by Armitage Rigby, one of many commissions Knox worked on in his later years.
Manx National Heritage Collection (1954-5839/k)
Knox’s watercolour landscapes, though not widely known outside the Isle of Man, reveal a deeply personal side to his art. Painted for the ‘satisfaction of his own soul’, his watercolours capture the shifting beauty of the Manx landscape. This piece shows trees coming into spring foliage, embodying Knox’s love for the Island’s ever-changing seasons.
Manx National Heritage Collection (1954-5651)
Textile Designs (stamps 5 & 10)
These original watercolours, featuring interlacing buds and leaves, showcase Knox’s design work in the Arts and Crafts style. Probably created during his time with the Silver Studio, these designs were likely intended for textile products sold by Liberty. It is estimated that Knox produced more than 5,000 designs for Liberty, demonstrating his incredible versatility as a designer. Manx National Heritage (1964-0221/e & m)
Gold, Opal, and Enamel
This ring features an intricate knot design, highlighted with vibrant blue enamel and an opal centrepiece. It appears in Liberty sketchbook no. 4064, showcasing Knox’s fusion of Celtic-inspired patterns with modern aesthetics. Many of Knox’s designs were influenced by the unique culture and heritage of the Isle of Man.
Private Collection
Cymric Silver Biscuit Box
A striking silver box with yellow-green enamel, the lid is double-hinged and inset with blister pearls. Hallmarked in Birmingham, 1900, it is one of only two known enamelled versions of this design, the other held at the V&A Museum. It stands as an early example of Knox’s modernist Celtic style.
The Peartree Collection
Manx Fairy Tales Illustration
This illustration was created for Sophia Morrison’s Manx Fairy Tales (1929). Knox and Morrison, both celebrated figures in Manx culture, were close friends, and he generously gifted the book illustrations to her. This image accompanies the story The Lhondoo and the Ushag-
Reaisht (The Blackbird and the Golden Plover), with the opening word “One” elegantly rendered in Knox’s distinctive calligraphy. The complete set of illustrations is housed in the Manx National Heritage collections. Manx National Heritage (1970-0149/16)
Curving Road under Vibrant Sky
This atmospheric watercolour from Manx National Heritage’s extensive collection depicts a track leading from a quarry, with distant cottages and trees under a dramatic sky. It captures a fleeting moment, painted quickly but with careful attention to the precise lighting Knox wanted to evoke.

Isle of Man Post Office is proud to issue this sheetlet celebrating the career of legendary cyclist Sir Mark Cavendish KBE. The Manx Missile retired from competition in 2024 after a professional career which brought multiple accolades, including recording the most Tour de France stage wins of any rider in history.
Born in the Isle of Man in May 1985, ‘Cav’ is one of the most successful and prolific sprinters in the history of professional cycling. His career was marked by extraordinary achievements, perseverance, and a tenacious spirit that cemented his status as a legend in the sport.
His cycling journey started at a young age, racing BMX at the National Sports Centre in Douglas, the capital city of his home nation. His former coach, Dot Tilbury, recalls him as a determined young racer who would often lap other riders on his way to victory.
He soon transitioned to road cycling and turned professional in 2005. Riding for Team Sparkasse in 2006 he demonstrated his class on the Tour de Berlin, winning two stages and the points and sprint competitions. This success saw Cav promoted to stagiaire at the T-Mobile Team for the rest of the season. In 2008 he took his first stage wins on the Tour de France, launching a period of sprinting domination from the Manx Missile, where his ability as a master tactician to deploy his explosive energy and positional awareness allowed him to overwhelm competitors.

In a glittering professional career, Cavendish secured 165 wins including, perhaps most famously, 35 stage victories on the Tour de France to surpass the longstanding record of Belgian great Eddy Merckx. The record books show that Cavendish amassed 55 Grand Tour stage wins, UCI World Championship titles on road and track, Olympic and Commonwealth Games medals, and so much more.
In typical style, at his final race, the then 39-yearold put in a trademark sprint finish to win the 2024 Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium, ensuring he signed off with victory. It was an emotional end to a highly successful 19-year career.
In August 2024, just weeks after being awarded a knighthood for his services to cycling and charity, Cavendish attended a national celebration of his career which culminated in the raceway at the National Sports Centre, where he began his career, being renamed in his honour.
Many of the young riders who take to the Sir Mark Cavendish Raceway dream of emulating their hero Cav, for many the greatest cyclist in history.
