Welcome to our Autumn 2015 Newsletter Dear Friends We are now well into autumn and over the weekend I took a trip to Peel. There’s still a lot of colour in the gardens and hedgerows with the leaves starting to turn to the most beautiful shades imaginable. I like autumn on our Island as you can get some lovely days - just what’s needed to set you up for the winter ahead. We are putting the finishing touches to our Year Collection. As I went through the chapters I was reminded of what a varied year it has been. The Penny Black Anniversary was very important to reinforce the long and significant place the postage stamp has had in the daily lives of people worldwide. I was told recently that letter writing was a thing of the past; I was therefore heartened to read about National Letter Writing Week and a Universal Postal Union letter writing competition which generated 1.5 million responses. Isle of Man Stamps & Coins makes every effort to encourage letter writing; we
provide stamps and postcards if required to schools and clubs. If you know of any project where we can assist please don’t hesitate to get in touch. At Stampex last week Robin Cassell of Mulready Philatelics showed me a letter posted in Ramsey in 1844. It was in the most beautiful condition with very interesting contents - I wonder if the letter I sent to my aunt in the USA will turn up in a postal history sale in 2186! With all good wishes to you and your family as we approach the festive season.

Isle of Man Post Office announces LongestReigning Monarch with special postmark – 5.30pm Windsor Road Post Office Isle of Man Post Office produced a postmark to record the truly historic moment in time when not only HM The Queen became the Longest Reigning Monarch but also HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh became the longest serving Consort, in service of the Nation and Commonwealth. Following the calculation prepared by Buckingham Palace that the accolade of Longest Reigning Monarch would pass from HM Queen Victoria to HM Queen Elizabeth at around 5.30pm on the 9th September 2015, Isle of Man Post Office was able to initiate a special item and postmark design incorporating our aptly named ‘Windsor Road’ Post Office branch along with the relevant time of 5.30pm and inside of this special cover, a pictorial text card shows events from the 9th September 2015. This one day only official postmark is truly significant in recording a momentous milestone in the reign of HM Queen Elizabeth II and Her Consort HRH Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh.

JOHN WILKINSON, COMPANIES REGISTRAR FOR THE ISLE OF MAN GOVERNMENT WRITES... The 5th September 2015 sees the 150th anniversary of the Isle of Man’s first Companies Act. Tynwald promulgated the Companies Act 1865 and on the 5th July 1865 it came into operation two months later. On the 26th October 1865 the Isle of Man Banking Company Limited was incorporated as company ‘number 1.’ Over the years the Companies Act 1865 has been amended on numerous occasions and there are currently eight Acts of Tynwald that are collectively known as the Companies Act 1931 to 2004 with supporting rules, regulations and orders. These enable the creation of bodies in the Isle of Man known as companies, each with its own distinct corporate personality and perpetual succession - that is to say that each company continues
notwithstanding the death or incapacity of any one or more of its members and directors. In recent times the Isle of Man has adopted company law provisions from jurisdictions other than the United Kingdom when they suited our needs. For example, the Companies Act 1968 contained amendments in relation to the issue of a prospectus that had been enacted in Northern Ireland in 1960. The Companies Act 1986 contained new provisions in relation to the capacity and powers of companies which were derived from legislation enacted in New Zealand in 1955. More recently, the Isle of Man Companies Act 2006, also known as the 2006 Act, was introduced and is a law which permits the incorporation of a flexible and modern corporate vehicle which was originally known as the New Manx Vehicle. Incorporation of 2006 Act companies commenced in the Isle of Man on the 1st November 2006.

New New Collection Collection
Issue Date: Date: 25.04.15 Issue 01.10.15
Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this collection showcasing ten remarkably varied works by the Island’s most distinguished living artist. Marking over sixty years of exemplary artistic practice and achievement, our issue features works located on and off the Isle of Man and reflects the artist’s deep-rooted connection to the Island. Bryan Kneale is the elder statesman not only of British sculpture but also of Manx art. While he is known in London as a celebrated sculptor, Royal Academician and esteemed lecturer, he has simultaneously contributed to Manx cultural life through a range of public commissions sited on the Island. A bronze of Sir Hall Caine, a stainless steel portrait of Henry Bloom Noble and a variation on the three legs of Man in the same material, and adorning the Island’s main hospital, are all publically accessible in addition to the works featured on our stamps and Bryan is well represented in the Manx National Heritage and IOM Arts Council collections. While portraits of Manx luminaries and the three legs of Man are easily associated with the Island, the ‘Manxness’ in Bryan’s work is less obvious and harder to define. The large bronze three legs of Man for the Manx Millennium is familiar to thousands passing through the Island’s airport, but closer inspection reveals an ingenious construction, resembling an assemblage of ancient armour, its taut lines and crisp silhouette redolent of Celtic interlacing and, in turn, the work of fellow Manxman Archibald Knox, one of Bryan’s early influences whose work he much admires. Both artists share an acute awareness of form and outline, which Bryan feels may be attributed to a Manx upbringing… “One of the things about the Island is that whatever I saw seemed to assume a daguerreotype-like kind of reality owing to the extreme clarity of light and bareness of the landscape.” This strong silhouette and muscular articulation of form has been a central characteristic of Bryan’s work throughout his career: the early figurative portraits,
6
seemingly carved from paint; his ground-breaking early abstract work in forged and welded steel, so dynamically original in form, all muscle and knuckle; his direct yet compassionate drawings of animal skeletons and his later fluid and masterfully weightless works in coloured and patinated metals. All these works demonstrate a hand and mind at work determined to explore and develop new equivalents for personal experience and growth, not content to settle into an artistic or commercial formula… Indeed Bryan’s late brother, Nigel Kneale, best known for his Quatermass novels, thought of him as an adventurer… “If my younger brother Bryan hadn’t taken up art I think he might have gone to sea. We come from the Isle of Man and the Manx have a long history of becoming sailors, smugglers or Naval captains. A longing for adventure took them to the ends of the Earth.” “He took the high road and I think I took the low road, writing screenplays for television and film. That’s what it feels like. Bryan remained the purist, accepting no compromises in his work but always looking for new adventures.” “…He turned to sculpture. First small pieces in welded metal. What I found fascinating was that somehow they always retained some human dimension, a kind of life… Marvellously, beasts and fish and birds are re-animated through their most basic structure. Rendered in bronze or simply drawn, in scale from small to gigantic, always alive.”
A
B
C “…They are Bryan’s creatures, creations from his many adventures. There are others in the Isle of Man, with which he has kept strong links, mounted on sites there or preserved on permanent display. It has been his Island ever since he walked its hills in his youth, a boy with a dog.” Bryan has always recognised the enormous influence of his upbringing on the Isle of Man, feeling that he was fundamentally a Manxman and that was the root of his strength and directness as an artist. We hope this stamp collection reveals even a small glimpse of Bryan’s adventures on and off the Island in six decades of making art.

The Isle of Man Post Office is very pleased to present this sparkling set of five stamps to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the first prayer book published in Manx. Local artist Julia Ashby Smyth has focussed on a selection of Manx words and religious emblems most closely associated with the spiritual aspects of Christmas and winter festival. Valerie Caine, Manx freelance journalist and feature writer writes… John Phillips, Bishop of Sodor and Man, translated the 1604 edition of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer into Manx Gaelic c.1610, when he discovered that local clergy conducted services on an ad-hoc basis and translated ‘on the hoof’ which led to them making errors. A Welsh speaker from North Wales, Bishop Phillips also held the positions of Rector of Andreas, Archdeacon of Mann and the Lord of Mann’s Chaplain. The first Manx Gaelic translation, described in a letter by Bishop Phillips as the Mannish Book of Common Prayer, was based on the 1604 English edition, but the Manx clergy set about another translation c.1760, during the time of Bishop Hildesley, using the 1662 English version of the Anglican Book of Prayer. It was published in 1765 under the auspices of the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge and subsequently reprinted in 1842. Both translations were brought together within a two volume edition in 1893 by Manx scholar A.W. Moore, assisted by Professor John Rhŷs (Professor of Celtic at Oxford University) and published by the Manx Society. 8
Bishop Phillips died in 1633 at Bishopscourt and is buried at St German’s Cathedral. Former Reader in Celtic Studies at the University of Leeds, Rev. Robert L. Thomson studied the Bishop Phillips text afresh in 1953, and his unpublished dissertation is held in the University of Glasgow, with a copy in the Manx Museum Archive. The Anglican Book of Common Prayer is seen as a valuable example of the Manx language at an earlier stage, containing prayers for every occasion throughout the year, including Advent, Christmas Day and St Stephen’s Day (Boxing Day). Artist Julia Ashby Smyth writes… My initial point of reference for the design of these stamps was, obviously, the Prayer Book and particularly the prayers/Collects from Advent to Epiphany. I studied comparative liturgies used in 1765 and concentrated specifically on the prayers recited on the first Sunday in Advent, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day (the Feast of the Nativity), St Stephen’s Day (26th December), St John the Evangelist’s Day (27th), The Innocent’s Day (28th) and Epiphany (6th January). A number of words appeared regularly throughout the chosen Collects and these were the ones I used in the five designs with their Manx translations - Peace (Shee), Love (Graih), Grace (Grayse), Strength (Niart) and Faith (Credjue). I am grateful to Chris Sheard of Culture Vannin for making sure the spellings and context of the Manx translations are correct.

As there are no pictorial elements in the 1765 Manx Prayer Book, inspiration came from illuminated manuscripts, ecclesiastical texts and a ‘Book of Hours’ of the same period, reproducing the same colours and design elements to hopefully recreate an eighteenth century ‘feel’ for the collection. The motifs chosen to illuminate the Manx words have been used for nearly two millennia to depict aspects in the Bible, and have been adopted and adapted for use around Christmas-time for centuries, the idea being to link the, maybe, unfamiliar word to the familiar motif, thus highlighting the ‘Manxness’ and the origin of the issue.

BRYAN KNEALE RA Born in Douglas, Isle of Man, Bryan studied painting at Douglas School of Art before attending the Royal Academy Schools, London from 1948 to 1952. During this time he lived in Italy having been awarded the prestigious Rome Scholarship for painting. He became known as an accomplished portrait painter until, in the early 1960s, he was inspired by his brother-in-law to try welding and he moved from painting to making sculpture. After a successful solo show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1966, he became the first sculptor of abstract work to be elected a Royal Academician. In addition to organising a number of radical and influential exhibitions he enjoyed a long career, 1963 to 95, lecturing in London’s leading colleges, including the Royal Academy Schools. His most significant contribution was to the Royal College of Art where he taught for over thirty years and was Head of Sculpture from 1985 to 90. Bryan has exhibited widely and his work can be found in many prestigious collections around the world including the Tate, London, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the National Gallery of New Zealand and, of course, Manx National Heritage. He lives and works in London.
