Spring 2017

In this issue... Isle of Man Festivals Miniature Sheet, Green Mann Food Matters on the Isle of Man, 300 Years of Freemasonry, new 50p coin, Variable Value Triskelion Definitives rolling out to kiosks and counters.

Welcome to our Spring 2017 Newsletter Dear Friends As I write this, we are very much in April showers season on the Island; having said that in my opinion spring on the Isle of Man is my favourite time of the year. There is something about the light against the rolling hills and hedgerows, abundant with brilliant yellow gorse and a multitude of spring flowers, which makes me feel all is well. These sentiments are beautifully represented by local artist Nicola Dixon who we commissioned to produce exclusive new artworks for our Green Mann stamp issue which celebrates “Food Matters” and the launch of the new Isle of Man food provenance initiative. I hope you found our first variable value definitives, the Triskelion issue, pleasing. They were very well received at Stampex with a number of collectors from Europe showing a lot of interest in the slight differences between the stamps printed by the handheld machines and the kiosks. Also in this newsletter we showcase Manx Festivals, a collection which was researched and designed by Isle of Man Advertising. Finally we are incredibly proud of our stamp collection celebrating 300 Years of Freemasonry which was produced in conjunction with the Isle of Man Provincial Grand Lodge and United Grand Lodge of England. On behalf of all the staff of Stamps and Coins I would like to extend our very good wishes to you and your family. All good wishes Maxine Cannon, General Manager, Isle of Man Stamps & Coins

A tribute to Albert Lowe by Maxine Cannon It was with great sadness I attended the funeral service of Albert Lowe a stalwart of the Isle of Man Philatelic and Postal History scene. As long as I can remember Albert was always there taking photographs of special post office events. In fact he prepared a collection of images which we used on our Post Box issue back in 1999, he also had an archive of many former sub post office properties. I had a lot of respect for him, I always knew that if I rang Albert to ask for help with any customer queries or stamp issues without hesitation he would get on with the task. A very proud Manxman who gave so much back to our Island. Pictured is a stamp from our 2002 People’s Choice stamp collection which Albert Lowe provided the photography for.

Behind the scenes with Nicola Dixon Green Mann artist Nicola Dixon, kindly invited us in to her studio to see her in action working on the concepts for our tasty new stamp collection which issued on Wednesday 3rd May. Nicola, who describes herself as ‘an artist from the Isle of Man painting bright colourful watercolours of the Manx coast and creatures’, worked with our Stamp and Coin coordinator and the Island’s Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture, to come up with new original artworks especially for the stamps. Based on real locations around the Island, the stamps showcase the landscape of the Isle of Man and it’s horticultural, farming and fishing heritage beautifully. 2

The Isle of Man Post Office is proud to present this miniature sheet featuring popular Manx festivals which celebrate the Island’s rich artistic and cultural heritage. It is also a tribute to all those who have contributed so much to Manx arts and culture, such as Sophia Morrison, TE Brown and Mona Douglas. Yn Chruinnaght - ‘the gathering’ – takes place in July as a celebration of the Island’s culture and its relationship with the other Celtic nations. It has its origins in Cruinnaght Vanninagh Ashoonagh, a festival founded in 1924 by William Cubbon which ended with the outbreak of World War II. Thanks to the efforts of Mona Douglas, one of the Island’s leading cultural icons, and others, it was reborn in 1978 as Yn Chruinnaght, a five-day festival centred first around Ramsey and from 2007 based in Peel. Yn Chruinnaght enters an exciting new era in 2017 with the launch of a new identity, Celtfest, which stays true to the festival’s heritage while embracing its increasing diversity in the modern world. The Mananan International Festival, established in 1975, is the brainchild of John Bethell MBE and was championed by the late Sir John Betjeman, the festival’s first patron. Held annually at the Erin Arts Centre in Port Erin over a fortnight in June and July, this prestigious event has long attracted leading stars from the world of performing arts to the Isle of Man. Classical music, jazz, theatre, films, opera (such as The Barber of Seville), lectures and more have all featured on the diverse programme. For 2017 guests are set to include classical guitarist Craig Ogden, operatic bass Matthew Rose and cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, the 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year. The success of the Ramsey-based Shennaghys Jiu demonstrates the passion among young people in the Isle of Man to preserve and celebrate traditional Manx culture. As with many great ideas, it had its origin in a pub discussion between James Alexander, leader of the Fochabers Fiddlers, and Andrew Hannan and Juan Garrett, who founded the festival alongside Rachel Pressley in 1998. Each Easter holiday it brings together young performers and artists (such as Share na Veg from Bunscoill Rhumsaa) from around the Celtic nations, providing a platform to showcase their talents in a warm and friendly atmosphere. One of the newest additions to the Island’s arts and cultural calendar, Manx Litfest was first staged in 2012. It brings together authors, poets, agents, publishers and readers from around the British Isles for a celebration of storytelling in late September/early October. Events inspire youngsters to read and write, including National Story Day, which sees authors and poets visit Manx schools for a series of performances, readings and talks (such as poet Mark Grist). Litfest also provides a platform for Island writers to enhance their skills and make contacts within the publishing industry, while the poetry and short story slams offer opportunities to perform their work in front of an audience. 4

125 Years

The oldest of the featured festivals is the Manx Competitive Music, Speech and Dance Festival, more commonly known as the Manx Music Festival or ‘The Guild’. It started life in 1892, when choir competitions were held as part of the Isle of Man Fine Art and Industrial Guild. These were organised by Miss ML Wood, ‘The Mother of Manx Music’. Further classes and awards were added over the years (such as the Manchester Manx Shield, first presented in 1908 and still presented today for the Concert Class for Mixed Choirs) and what started as a one-day competition has evolved into a nine-day festival held each April at the Villa Marina. In 2017 The Guild marks its 125th anniversary and competition for the iconic Cleveland Medal will be as fierce as ever.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this collaboration with TV gardener Chris Collins and IOM artist Nicola Dixon in which we celebrate the Island’s landscape and the horticultural, farming and fishing heritage which has encouraged a rich and growing diversity of contemporary food producers on the Isle of Man. Chris Collins writes… This Green Mann stamp issue has such amazing possibilities and the chance to create a narrative about the work of those that locally produce the food on the Isle of Man was a chance I jumped at. We all benefit from the many wonderful things that arrive on our shores from faraway lands but it’s time to stop and see what is right on our own doorsteps. On the Isle of Man there really is a treasure trove. From fruit orchards, fresh fish, farm products and wonderful fresh veg, the Island has it all on offer. So how do we let people know about this, is there a more perfect way than a stamp issue? This provides a vehicle we can all rally round, the humble stamp is something everybody knows and provides opportunities to go in to schools, farms, gardens and really touch base with the people of the Isle of Man and its fresh produce. I look forward to working with the friendly and hospitable residents of the Island and helping let the world know all about these stamps and what they represent. Food Matters on the Isle of Man For centuries, farmers, growers and fishermen have helped to shape the diverse landscape and rich cultural heritage of the Isle of Man. They are also playing a part in growing the Island’s economy with an exceptional range of food and drink products that are widely acknowledged for their quality and flavour.

6

As more consumers seek to buy quality food and drink from known and trusted sources, farmers have become more entrepreneurial and food producers more and more imaginative. Last year, 28 UK Great Taste Awards were won by 13 different Manx businesses, with products ranging from fresh meat, ale and cheese to bread, flour and spices. Our dairy, meat and flour are both traceable and well-managed as most farms on the Isle of Man are accredited members of Farm Assurance Schemes in which safety, animal welfare and environmental protection are regularly assessed. Our fisheries are managed to sustain commercially important species, (such as King and Queen Scallops for example), well into the future and our food producers are registered and inspected to ensure that high standards of food hygiene and safety are maintained. The Isle of Man Government’s Food Matters strategy promotes the growth of our food and drink sector, assisting businesses to start up and expand. Since the first Isle of Man Food and Drink Guide was produced in 2009 the number of businesses and information included in the guide has grown significantly. The guide serves to inform consumers about the Island’s wonderfully distinctive and varied food products and where to buy them. Andrew Lees Food Business Development Manager

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present six stamps marking three hundred years of English Freemasonry. Freemasonry is a “system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols”. It is a society that instils in its members a moral and ethical approach to life based on integrity, kindness, honesty and fairness; members are urged to show concern for all people, care for the less fortunate and help those in need. For this reason perhaps, the Masonic Charitable Foundation is one of the largest grant-making charities in the United Kingdom. We have taken architectural elements from the lodges of England and the Isle of Man as inspiration for the background illustrations in our stamps. The main features of the stamps are the badges of office of the senior officers within the lodge and discreet symbols within the stamps relate to the tercentenary, as well as the 50th year of office of His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent, Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England. Our first stamp bears the badge of office of the The Steward on a background of geometric patterns. His jewel represents a Cornucopia or ‘Horn of Plenty’. It is a symbol of abundance and plenty - to remind him that it is his duty to see that the tables are properly furnished at refreshment. Our second stamp bears The Inner Guard’s jewel, two swords in saltire on a background of art deco starred lines. The sword is also the jewel of the Outer Guard or Tyler, and symbolically enables these officers to “keep off all intruders and Cowans to Freemasonry, and suffer none to pass but such as duly qualified.” Our third stamp bears the jewel of the Junior and Senior Deacons, a dove bearing an olive branch on 8

a background of a great light surrounded by other lights, from the ceiling of Grand Lodge. The dove symbolises a faithful messenger, and dates back to the story of Noah in ‘Genesis’. After forty days and forty nights a dove was dispatched, it returned with an olive branch – a message that the waters were receding. Our fourth stamp bears the jewel of the Junior Warden, a plumb rule, which symbolises moral uprightness and integrity, on an art deco inspired pattern. The plumb rule denotes the connection of Heaven and Earth and teaches us to walk in a righteous manner, and maintain a straight and undeviating line along the paths of virtue. Our fifth stamp bears the jewel of the Senior Warden, a level, which symbolises equality, on a background inspired by the windows of Freemason’s Hall in the Isle of Man. The level was used by ancient civilisations as a symbol of equality and justice - it was given to represent Magistrates within the guild system. Our sixth stamp bears the jewel of the Worshipful Master, the Square, on a background of overlaid right angles. The square symbolises morality. It is an angle of ninety degrees or the fourth part of a circle, and is the symbol of regulated life and actions. You will find discreet references to six important locations at the top of the stamps and other hidden mysteries, including some visible only under UV light. Our stamps have been designed to be respectful, symbolic as well as beautiful pieces of art in their own right.
