Welcome to our Summer 2017 Newsletter Dear Friends Today, as we almost reach the summer solstice, our Island has said farewell to TT road racing fans and welcome to competitors in in the HSBC UK | National Road Championships. Here in Stamps & Coins we have taken great pleasure in supporting both events. Firstly with a new set of four stamps titled TT Winners and secondly with a bespoke special postmarked certificate for each competitor in the road races. For the first time, we have commissioned a business customised sheet with Royal Mail to celebrate 300 years of Freemasonry, it’s a limited edition of just 750 copies and complements our range. Our national day, Tynwald Day, which takes place on Wednesday 5th July marks the 600th Anniversary of Customary Law. We have worked very closely with Manx National Heritage and the Office of the Clerk of Tynwald, while our stamp issue coordinator, Paul Ford has selected and photographed a number of images, many un-published, to be used on our commemorative limited edition sheet. I’m sure you will agree the final result is very informative both in terms of style and content, the range concludes with a limited edition commemorative envelope personally signed by the President of Tynwald. It just leaves me to say as we go into our 45th year of postal independence a very sincere thank you for your continued interest and support of Isle of Man stamps. I was looking through our office Lindner Album a few days ago and was reminded of all the beautiful stamps that we have produced since 1973, so a timely reminder to say thanks to all the stamps and coins staff past and present who have played a part in the producing our collections. With all good wishes Maxine Cannon, General Manager, Isle of Man Stamps & Coins
Chris Collins Puts His Stamp on Island Schools On Wednesday 3rd May we launched our Green Mann, Food Matters on the Isle of Man Stamps. To celebrate the launch of these stamps former Blue Peter Gardener Chris Collins, who also wrote the issue text, visited four of the Island’s primary schools. Chris worked with the children to help them improve their school’s green spaces and talk about the importance of horticulture. Whilst on Island Chris also attended the launch of the Isle of Man Food Provenance label. This label can be seen on the front of the self-adhesive booklet from the collection.

TT Riders Full Throttle Support of TT Winners Collection The TT Festival is a huge event in the Island’s calendar, a time when our sleepy towns and villages become part of one of the best race tracks in the world. This year marked 110 years of this one of a kind event and it seemed only fitting to pay tribute to the debut wins of four legends of the races; Joey Dunlop, Steve Hislop, Ian Simpson and Ian Hutchinson. We are so pleased Ian Hutchinson, Ian Simpson and Joey’s son Gary (pictured left) were able to find time in their hectic schedules to show support for this fantastic stamp collection.
150th Anniversary of the First Popular Election Stamp and Coin Packs Presented to School Children Island Wide. In April Isle of Man Post Office Chairman Julie Edge MHK visited Onchan and Ashley Hill Primary schools where she talked to the students and presented them with commemorative coin packs marking the 150th anniversary of the first popular election of the House of Keys. The packs contained a 50p piece and a stamp from the recently released 150th Anniversary of the House of Keys stamps. This was part of an Island wide initiative which saw every school child presented with one of these packs which were all produced by Isle of Man Stamps and Coins. These stamp and coin packs are now available to purchase for £7.50 using code AH37. Pupils of Ashley Hill School with Chairman Julie Edge MHK, Rob Callister MHK and headteacher Peter Lewis.
Isle of Man Stamps and Coins at Classic 300 On Sunday 21st May we were privileged to attend the Freemasons’ Classic 300 event at the Windsor Great Park. At this event the United Grand Lodge of England’s Grand Master HRH The Duke of Kent was presented with a framed 300 Years of Freemasonry Collection. Participants in the run were all given a very special limited edition cover to carry in their vehicle with them. These have been signed by the drivers and returned and will be auctioned as a unique collection, with all funds raised being shared between Manx charities; The Family Library (Charity No. 1211) and Wish upon a Dream (Charity No. 972). The United Grand Lodge of England considers the Classic 300 to be a significant and colourful part of the tercentenary celebrations.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to celebrate landmark anniversaries of the maiden victories of four heroes of the Isle of Man TT. With more than 50 TT wins between them, each of the riders featured here has earned a place in TT history alongside great names like Woods, Guthrie, Surtees, McIntyre, Hailwood, Grant and McGuinness.
Joey Dunlop
Ian Simpson
It was 40 years ago when Joey Dunlop showed that he was a fast learner on the Snaefell Mountain Course, for in only his second year at the TT and riding a hybrid comprised of a Yamaha TZ750 engine in a frame built to take a Suzuki, he came home first in the 1977 Jubilee Classic TT.
For Ian Simpson, pressure to win a TT was increased by the fact that his father was a previous winner.
Joey suffered an engine misfire for the first few miles of the race and then was forced to stop at Ramsey on the last lap to check the state of his rear tyre, but he raced on to the chequered flag and took the first of his 26 TT wins.
He went on to take two further wins in 1998.
Steve Hislop A decade later and it was the talented Steve Hislop’s turn to record his first TT win. With his Yamaha troubled by ignition failure in practice, and being unable to afford a replacement, Steve was fortunate to be gifted a new ignition unit for the race. Putting it to good use, he overcame stiff opposition to take victory in the 1987 Formula Two event at record speed. It was the first of his 11 TT wins.
4
Ian’s first win came in the 1997 Junior race, when he rode his colourful V&M-sponsored Honda in a start-to-finish victory at record-breaking speeds.
Ian Hutchinson Three years after making his TT debut, Ian Hutchinson had cause to join in the 2007 TT Centenary celebrations when he grabbed his first TT win in that year’s Supersport race. His victory was the high spot of a successful week in which he took a further three podium places. Ian holds the record of taking five TT wins in a week and remains a top runner, with 14 TT wins to his name before the 2017 races.

Isle of Man Post Office presents this most significant landmark stamp issue in tribute to one of the world’s most famous figures and in recognition of his lifetime of service to the British monarchy on the occasion of his retirement from royal public engagements. PETER JENNINGS WRITES… His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich, was born Prince of Greece and Denmark on 10th June 1921 in Corfu. Baptized Greek Orthodox, he was the youngest of five children and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenburg. He was educated across Europe before joining the British Royal Navy at the age of 18. He graduated top cadet in his course and was commissioned as a midshipman in January 1940. Promoted in 1942, aged 21, he was one of the youngest first lieutenants in the Royal Navy. It was in 1939, whilst King George VI and Queen Elizabeth were touring the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, that Philip was asked to escort the King’s two daughters. Soon after this meeting Princess Elizabeth, then aged 13, and Philip began exchanging letters. They fell in love and, in 1946, Philip asked the King for his daughter’s hand in marriage. King George VI gave his blessing provided the formal engagement was delayed until Princess Elizabeth’s 21st birthday. It was during this time that Philip adopted the surname Mountbatten from his maternal grandparents and became a naturalized British citizen, discarding his Greek and Danish titles and converting to Anglicanism. The royal engagement between Philip and Princess Elizabeth, ‘heiress presumptive’, was officially announced on 9th July 1947. Philip and Princess Elizabeth were married in Westminster Abbey on 20th November 1947 and moved into Clarence House before welcoming Prince Charles, born in 1948, and Princess Anne,
6
in 1950, into the family. Prince Philip returned to the Navy and was promoted to lieutenant commander of the frigate HMS Magpie in July 1950, before his naval career ended in July 1951. The accession of Princess Elizabeth occurred on 6th February 1952 and she was later crowned Queen of the United Kingdom in front of more than 8,000 guests and an estimated 27 million British television viewers. The young family took up residence at Buckingham Palace before expanding their household to include Prince Andrew, born in 1960, and Prince Edward in 1964. A keen artist, carriage driver, polo player and yachtsman, Prince Philip founded the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for 14–24 year olds in 1956 to give young people “a sense of responsibility to themselves and their communities.” He was granted the title Prince of the United Kingdom in 1957 and appointed to the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada. He has been patron of more than 800 organisations, served as UK president of the World Wildlife Fund between 1961 and 1982 and acted as Chancellor for the Universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Salford and Wales. As the Queen’s consort he has celebrated her Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees by her side and visited countries all over the world from Australia to the USA, Tristan da Cunha to the Isle of Man. Prince Philip is the longest serving, oldest ever spouse of a reigning British monarch and the longest living male of the British royal family. HIS CONTRIBUTION TO BRITAIN IS IMMEASURABLE; HE HAS CERTAINLY EARNED HIS RETIREMENT.

“
Every time I’ve met him over the years he has always been the same - he shoots from the hip and is not in any way flowery. He loves a laugh and is very very funny. At 95 he has earned the right to come out of the public spotlight. He might be retiring but he’s far from meeting his mortician.

The Isle of Man Post Office is very pleased to present this set of six stamps featuring the work of renowned local wildlife artist Jeremy Paul to celebrate the important conservation work of the Manx BirdLife census. CHRIS SHARPE WRITES… In the summer of 2017 local charity, Manx BirdLife, undertook a census of all seabirds nesting around the Island’s coastline, a repeat of a survey last undertaken in 1999 and part of ongoing research aimed at monitoring the fortunes of our diverse coastal bird life. This issue showcases six species that breed around our coast, all of which are of Conservation Concern within the British Isles. OYSTERCATCHER This boldly marked black and white wader with a distinctive bright red bill occurs commonly round the coast. Breeding on sandy beaches, rocky outcrops and at some inland sites, the Oystercatcher is our most widespread wader with approximately 350 pairs in 1999. EIDER The Eider is a relatively recent coloniser of the Island, with breeding first noted in 1992 rising to around 50 pairs by the time of the last census in 1999. Since then the number and range of the species has increased significantly and it can be found around most of the coast, though fewer up the east coast than elsewhere. On calm days in spring their distinctive call is easily heard as males compete for a mate. LITTLE TERN Having spent the winter along the coast of West Africa the Little Tern, one of the Island’s most vulnerable species, returns to breed along the north-west coastline, with breeding restricted to one or two colonies. Colonies are susceptible to disturbance by humans, predation and prone to being washed away by storms. Only around 20 pairs bred at the start of this century, but 8
conservation effort since has helped increase numbers to 50 pairs in 2015, making the Manx population of significance in the British Isles. FULMAR The first nesting record on the Isle of Man was in 1936, now occupying most suitable steep cliff sites, with around 3,000 breeding pairs. Having finished raising their single chick by late August, pairs vacate nest sites before returning periodically through the winter to reestablish pair bonds. The young, meanwhile, become true ocean wanderers for the first four years of their lives, ranging throughout the North Atlantic as far as Newfoundland. BLACK GUILLEMOT The Isle of Man hosts approximately 1% of the breeding population of Britain and Ireland; around 600 individuals in 1999. Nests are mainly on remote steep cliffs, in cracks and under boulders, largely unnoticed by humans. In recent years however breeding has occurred in some of the Island’s harbours, providing a great opportunity for people to get close-up views of this attractive member of the auk family. RAZORBILL One of the four members of the auk family to breed on the Isle of Man, with over 1,500 individuals at the start of the century. Despite this it has a relatively restricted distribution, over 90% of birds confined to just four main colonies on sheer inaccessible cliff faces. Like many seabirds the species is vulnerable, due largely to pressures on food caused by a range of factors including changes in climate.

Isle of Man Post Office takes great pride in issuing this set of six commemorative stamps on the 70th anniversary of the engagement of HM Queen to HRH Prince Philip. In this Platinum anniversary year, the set charts landmark wedding anniversaries and is complemented by Dickie Artbiter’s warm appreciation of the couple’s long life of service and devotion together.
Head Over Heels
BY DICKIE ARBITER
When most young girls entering their teens come face to face with a blonde, six foot tall athletic Adonis, they would either blush or become totally smitten. For the 13 year-old Princess Elizabeth of York it was the latter, love at first sight.
To ensure that suitable time and space was put between the couple, the two Princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret, accompanied their parents on a four-month tour of South Africa and Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). The King was ambivalent about the young naval officer and didn’t want to lose the daughter of whom he was incredibly fond.
It was during a visit to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, with her father and mother, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in July 1939, that Princess Elizabeth came face to face with an 18 year-old Royal Navy Cadet named Philip Mountbatten. He was a Danish Greek Prince, who’d been assigned to entertain the King and Queen’s daughters.
He also hoped that with the long sea passages aboard the battleship HMS Vanguard and the gruelling four-month tour, Princess Elizabeth’s passion for Philip Mountbatten would diminish.
Within months of that meeting, war with Germany had been declared, and Philip, who had been commissioned a midshipman, was posted to the battleship HMS Ramillies. In 1942 he was promoted to Lieutenant and went on to serve in both the Mediterranean, where he was mentioned in despatches, as well as in the Far Eastern theatres of war.
But the King and Queen had to finally to accept their daughter’s unshakeable desire to marry the man she wanted, realising that hers was to be a marriage of choice rather than arrangement, and so on the 9th July 1947 the King and Queen made the long awaited announcement of the ’betrothal of their dearly beloved daughter, Princess Elizabeth, to Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten RN’.
Even though the war years kept them apart, Princess Elizabeth never forgot the man she’d fallen in love with, writing to him regularly, and he to her at least once a week.
There’s no question that The Queen could not have had a better life partner than Prince Philip. They have shared a remarkable journey of togetherness; they love and appreciate each other; they are the best of friends; they understand each other’s position and they’ve laughed away the years. At a lunch to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in 1997 The Queen paid rare public tribute to her husband: “He is someone who doesn’t take easily to compliments, but he has quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I and his whole family, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim or we shall ever know.”
At the end of war Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten was invited to join the royal family on their summer holiday at Balmoral. It was during this break that Philip, now 25, proposed to the 20 year-old Princess. She accepted immediately, ignoring the 1772 Royal Marriages Act by which she should have first asked her father’s permission. When the King was eventually asked, he provisionally agreed on condition that she allowed ’time for reflection’ and 10
that there would be no announcement until after she had turned 21, which was still over half a year away. This was the King’s way of saying ’wait’.

Twenty years later, nothing has changed. They have grown older together, he is still her strength and they still make each other laugh. The Queen and Prince Philip have seen a changing world and they have adapted to it. They are soul-mates in a marriage that has stood the test of time, making their 70 years a truly remarkable Platinum celebration.

The striking sheet, designed in conjunction with Grand Lodge for the Tercentenary celebrations, is produced in a limited edition of 750 individually numbered sheets.
For the true collector of stamps and masonic memorabilia, we have allowed the release of a strictly limited number of these very special uncut sheets of stamps. We are releasing just 300 copies to mark the three hundredth anniversary of the founding of the United Grand Lodge of England.
The pictorial label images feature the collar jewels of the senior officers inside the Lodge and geometric Masonic patterns, with coded references to places important in masonry and the charitable works supported by Freemasons. These special stamps can be used for mailing within the UK, but they are also the perfect way for a Mason to show how proud he is of his craft - they are beautifully designed and can be framed as a gift for special events, Installations, Ladies Nights or as a gift for visiting Lodges. Each sheet is presented in a descriptive album containing a certificate of authenticity and includes a pristine set of Freemasonry 300 stamps with a detailed explanation of the many visible and hidden design elements contained within a stamp area of no more than 40mm square, a truly impressive Tercentenary 300 commemorative piece. 14
The sheet is exactly what rolls off the printer’s press and foiling machines, with the colour bars and grip left in place. Unsurprisingly, these sheets are very rarely, if ever, released to or even seen by the public. The sheets are 480 x 640 mm, making a wonderful framed item. The full sheet shows the six sets of ten of each of the stamps and the special six stamp sheetlet. The total face value of the stamps contained in the sheet is £91.32 The sheets will be numbered from 1 to 300.
