ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE REPRESENTATIVES ATTEND MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR PROF STEPHEN HAWKING On Friday 15th June 2018, Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO) Chairman Julie Edge MHK and Maxine Cannon General Manager of Stamps & Coins, along with five year ten science pupils from local secondary schools were honoured and proud to attend a memorial service in honour of Professor Stephen Hawking at Westminster Abbey in London. IOMPO were invited to attend having worked closely with The Stephen Hawking Foundation (SHF) over the past few years on a number of projects, including the privilege to record the Professor’s life’s work on postage stamps in July 2016. IOMPO also assisted the foundation by sending all invitations for the memorial service using a special postmark and stamps from the Hawking collection. Continuing their emphasis on education and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), 2
the foundation also invited the five pupils to attend the service and enjoy a private tour of Westminster Abbey where the late Professor’s ashes were interred alongside other great scientists including Sir Issac Newton and Charles Darwin. Elizabeth Forrester, Executive Director of The Stephen Hawking Foundation, said: “It has been a great pleasure for The Stephen Hawking Foundation to work so closely with the Isle of Man Post Office over the past several years. Their creativity and generous support are to be celebrated!” Before the ceremony Julie Edge MHK, Chairman of IOMPO, said: “We feel incredibly honoured to be attending what will be a very special memorial service. Professor Hawking is one of the greatest scientists of our time and to be privy to his final send-off will be a moment to treasure.”
News Highlights ISLE OF MAN STAMPS AND COINS ‘ACE’ IT IN LONDON! On Friday 15th June 2018 representatives from Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO) were delighted to join bikers and scooterists in London to unveil the newly installed Scooter and Classic Bike history boards – the IOMPO’s 80th anniversary gift to Mark and his team at the ACE Café London. In the presence of the Lord Mayor of Brent, IOMPO Chairman Julie Edge MHK, friends from the 59 Club and RAF100 Bike Ride and stamp designers Graham Crowley (Great British Motorcycles) and Paul Ford (Isle of Man International Scooter Festival) IOMPO thanked the ACE Café for all of their loyal support during the TT Festival. Upon arrival, General Manager, Maxine Cannon, asked Mark how many people he thought would turn up for the launch, given that Ed Sheeran was playing up the road at Wembley and the World Cup was on the TV. He told her ‘to wait and see, you won’t believe it’; and what a scene it was, as the car park filled up to capacity! The bikers were terrific sports and readily posed with stamp boards whilst telling stories of road trips and their passion for the Isle of Man TT. Each of the bikers were presented with a limited edition pair of 80th Anniversary ACE postcards, with Paul and Graham on hand to personally sign them.
Each had a special one-day-only ACE Café postmark, which are sure to be highly sought after by collectors of ACE café memorabilia. As the sun set on the forecourt of the ACE, the atmosphere was buzzing, just like IOMPO’s new partnership with the Ace Cafe in their 80th anniversary year.
‘MAIL ON THE RAILS’ MANX ELECTRIC RAILWAY UNVEILS MAIL VAN 4 On Saturday 30th June 2018, Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO) was delighted to issue its latest stamp collection ‘Manx Electric Railway 125th Anniversary’. It also marked a special date in the Isle of Man’s social calendar as the annual Laxey Fair took place, along with a very special unveiling of a recently restored mail van. Mail Van 4 is one of two covered goods vans built in 1894 by G. F. Milnes and was used to carry bagged mail between Douglas and Ramsey, a daily service which was to end in 1975. The van has recently undergone complete cosmetic restoration and was unveiled for the first time by Hon. Howard Quayle MHK in the presence of Hon. Steve Rodan and IOMPO’s Chairman Ms Julie Edge MHK. The restoration was a joint venture between the Manx Electric Railway, Isle of Man Post Office and a small band of dedicated volunteers who have carried out countless hours of work to an exacting standard. The restoration coincided perfectly with the launch of IOMPO’s postal
tribute, including the MER125 Prestige Booklet which celebrates the postal heritage of ‘Mail on the Rails’ and tells the story of the Railway Letter Service. To make this fascinating aspect of the MER125 history more widely known, history boards were fixed to both the interior and exterior of Mail Van 4. More details about this fantastic collection can be found on page 10.
News Highlights SCOOTER ENTHUSIASTS GIVEN THE STAMP OF APPROVAL On Saturday 23rd June 2018, hundreds of scooters set off from the Grandstand in Douglas as part of the 60th Manx International Scooter Rally. The 60th anniversary ride out was officially started by 1968 Scooter Rally gold medal winner Terry Moore and Anthea Radcliffe, former scooter girl and wife of Ken Radcliffe who started the Rally with David Higgins in 1958. This event has an interesting history; initially conceived as an annual event featuring competitive racing but in the 1980s, a ban was placed on scooters visiting the Island after trouble in the UK. In the early 2000s the Rally was revived as a bi-annual social event, drawing crowds of scooterists of all ages. In celebration of this landmark anniversary, Isle of Man Post Office issued a set of eight vibrant stamps featuring standout moments from the history of the gathering. To commemorate the ride out, Isle of Man Post Office also issued a special cover with stamps cancelled using a TT Grandstand postmark dated 23rd June 2018. Sixty first day covers were also taken on the ride out which are now available to purchase with a portion of the funds being donated to a local charity. You can view details of the collection and our special anniversary memorabilia at www.iompost.com/scooter-rally.

ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE CELEBRATES 45 YEARS OF POSTAL INDEPENDENCE On Thursday 5th July 2018 the Isle of Man marked its national day, Tynwald Day and also 45 years of postal independence. In 1767 His Majesty’s Postmaster General established a post office in the Isle of Man and introduced a mails service to and from the Island. At first Douglas was merely a sub office but it rose to head post office status in 1822. Administration of postal services remained under the control of the British post office (now Royal Mail) and up to postal independence the stamps used in our post offices on the Island were known as regionals - featuring a small portrait of Her Majesty the Queen and a three legs symbol to signify the Isle of Man. Similar stamp designs were used in Wales and Scotland to signify national identity.
4
On July 5th 1973 the Isle of Man Post Office Authority officially became an independent postal administration. Independence heralded the beginning of Isle of Man stamps specifically designed for exclusive use in the Isle of Man - this landmark occasion resulted in a new collecting area for philatelists and Manx stamps soon made their mark with collectors all over the world.
CHARITY’S ‘DRESS FOR SUCCESS’ FASHION SHOW Isle of Man Stamps and Coins is thrilled to announce that a fantastic £11,110.00 was raised at the Manx Breast Cancer Support Group’s ‘Dress for Success’ fashion show in June. Earlier this year, IOM Stamps and Coins approached actress and stage star Samantha Barks and asked her to model the red ‘Finella’ dress which appeared on our first class stamp from the Preen collection. Samantha was very pleased to get involved and personally selected the Manx Breast Cancer Support Group as the charity for which to receive proceeds from the auction of the dress. Samantha’s proud mum along with the mothers of Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi were in attendance at the fashion show to offer their support where a bid was submitted for the dress, and added to the total amount raised. Congratulations to Julie Stokes and her team for an incredible event that Isle of Man Post Office was thrilled to support.
ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE MAKES HISTORY AT RAF 100 FLYPAST On Tuesday 10th July 2018, Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO) was honoured to be invited by the Royal Air Force to participate in the celebration of their 100 years of service to our country. During the day, Her Majesty the Queen presented a new colour to the RAF in a moving ceremony. Representatives from IOMPO were positioned in the private reception on Horse Guards Parade, and surrounded by many hundreds of RAF Officers, being very moved to meet officers young and old, their families and special guests including Air Vice Marshal Murray, Controller of the RAFBF, who worked with IOMPO on the issue of the RAF100 stamps. It was the greatest flypast likely to be witnessed in our lifetimes. The RAF100 stamp collection was presented to pilots and crew of many of the aircraft on display and Ben Glazier of Glazier Design, who designed the stamps, had the opportunity to show them to the representatives of Lockheed Martin, who built the incredible new F35. Ben’s Grandfather Geoffrey Glazier was a Royal Flying Corps pilot who became an RAF officer on the
first day of the RAF in 1918. Ben was able to take Geoffrey’s medals, pilot wings and a photograph with him to show to the crews, which included young Air Force officers dressed in costumes of the era. During the flypast, something very special happened. On board the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Avro Lancaster PA474 were 500 sheets of the official RAF100 stamps. These sheets of stamps flew in the greatest RAF flypast and are now part of history. They flew above tens of thousands of people in London and directly over Buckingham Palace, the Queen and the Royal Family and very few people will have the opportunity to own one of these pieces of history. It was an incredibly proud moment for IOMPO to have been a part of this extraordinary event, which was an honour for the Isle of Man, the Post Office and everyone involved. 5

Isle of Man Post Office is delighted to mark the 50th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking film ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ (1968), ranked as one of the best films of all time, with a special collection of stamps, each one like the film itself, layered with hidden secrets embedded in microscopic form. This British-made film was released to UK audiences in 1968, one year before the moon landing. Audiences were stunned by the effects used and the sheer vision of writer Arthur C. Clarke and filmmaker Stanley Kubrick.
Heather Downham who played one of the space stewardesses who feature on the 83p stamp, recalled hearing an intake of breath at the premiere, so astounded were cinema audiences at the portrayal of weightlessness in space.
Clarke inspired the film with his book ‘The Sentinel’ and is also partly responsible for starting the Isle of Man’s space industry. He inspired Chris Stott to set up his satellite company ManSat and was also Chancellor of the International Space University when the chapter on the Island was formed with Chris at the helm. The Isle of Man has a thriving space industry, that includes communication with geostationary satellites, an area of research in which Arthur C .Clarke was a leader.
Another one of the defining images is the Star Child, featured on the £1.40 stamp; is this the future of humanity? It is for you to decide. On the £1.93 stamp is astronaut and main character Dr. Dave Bowman, played by actor Kier Dullea. He said later about the film, “It set the benchmark for everything else.”
We have been honoured to work with Warner Brothers and through them the Kubrick family, to create a set of stamps that are respectful of the genre, the film and its makers, as well as the millions of fans in the UK and beyond. The series of eight stamps depicts some of the most iconic imagery and themes from the film: the 25p stamp shows Stanley Kubrick in the midst of creating movie magic. On the 30p stamp, revered sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke whose short story, ‘The Sentinel’, from which ‘2001’ was adapted, is pictured on the set, standing in front of the pod. The 52p stamp features the docking scene at Space Station V, decades before today’s ISS was a reality. The 75p stamp has the ‘monolith, a featureless yet menacing black structure that provides the time link between past, present and future, that adds so much to the tension in the film. 6
The main theme of tension in ‘2001’ is derived from the interplay between the human characters and the artificial intelligence, HAL 9000. His all-seeing, all-hearing red ‘eye’, is featured on the £2.01 stamp. The theme of the film came from Kubrick’s own fascination with the Moon and the possibility that an alien life force had visited Earth centuries ago, perhaps before man, choosing the arid and airless surface of the Moon to leave clues, calling cards with evidence that mankind was not alone, that intelligent life had existed before and already mastered the art of intergalactic space travel. Kubrick knew exactly what his film should look like and the message it was going to deliver as he takes the audience on a mind-bending journey through space and time. In true Kubrickesque style, each of the ‘2001’ stamps issued by the Isle of Man Post Office contains a message, a secret code hidden to the naked eye – there for you to find.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of six stamps chosen from an open photographic competition, in collaboration with Isle of Man Railways, to showcase images which enthusiasts felt best represented the Manx Electric Railway. David Lloyd-Jones writes… The unique 3ft (914mm) gauge Manx Electric Railway is a pioneering inter-urban tramway, operating a fleet of vintage 500 volt DC tramcars. The oldest passenger tramcars date from 1893 and the newest from 1906. They operate a scenic 17¾ mile (28.5 km) route up the Island’s rugged east coast from the capital Douglas to Ramsey town in the north of the Island. The story of the Manx Electric Railway (MER) starts in the late 1880s, with a proposal to build a holiday camp at Howstrake, north of Douglas incorporating an electric tramway link. Construction and operation of the original 1¾ mile (2.8 km) long tramway was a testing ground for a line through to Laxey. The first section opened on 7th September 1893, operated for 19 days and carried over 20,000 passengers. Following the initial success, the line was extended to Laxey the following year, opening on the 28th July 1894. The next extension from Laxey to Ramsey was completed as far as the outskirts of Ramsey, opening on the 2nd August 1898. It wasn’t until the 24th July the following year the line reached Ramsey town itself, following the construction of an impressive 200ft (61 metres) long viaduct crossing the deep gorge at Ballure Glen. The first section of the line was constructed by the Douglas Bay Estates Ltd., acquired by the Douglas & Laxey Electric Tramway Co. Ltd. which changed its name to the Isle of Man Tramways & Electric Power Co. Ltd. (IoMT&EP). The IoMT&EP was forced into liquidation in 1900 following a bank collapse. In 1902 the tramway was purchased from the liquidators by the Manx Electric Railway Co. Ltd. 10
The MER‘s fortunes mirrors the Isle of Man Railway, with its golden years in the early 1920s, motor bus competition in the late 1920s, poor returns during the two World Wars and a post war decline due to cheap foreign package holidays. By the late 1950s the MER was in trouble and was acquired by the Isle of Man Government in 1957. The MER, under government ownership, has survived, despite a brief closure of the Laxey to Ramsey section in the late 1970s, which soon re-opened due to public pressure. The MER’s historical rolling stock today includes two of the original three tramcars dating from the opening of the line in 1893 and are in regular use today. MER No. 1 & No. 2 design predates traditional tramcar designs with their distinctive boxy bodies and open driving ends. Today, the MER is still reliant on the tourist trade. A lot of money has been spent over the last couple of decade on the MER with major rolling stock, track and infrastructure renewals to bring the system up to modern standards. Despite these changes, a ride on the MER today is like stepping back in time to a Victorian age, when the horse was the king of the road, and the pace of life much slower. David Lloyd-Jones is a well-known Isle of Man based author and photographer. His expertise is transport, especially the railways and tramways on the Island. For the past 30 years he has been promoting the Island to a worldwide audience via traditional and social media. In addition to the hundreds of magazine articles and thousands of photographs published, David has penned three books on the Manx railways. When not photographing or writing about transport, David loves pulling on his walking boots and heading out into countryside to capture the stunning Isle of Man scenery on film.

To mark the centenary of the end of World War 1 the Isle of Man Post Office presents a set of six stamps celebrating the work of Manxborn sculptor Rayner Hoff whose work adorns the ANZAC memorials in Sydney and Adelaide, Australia. The story is told by Deborah Beck, author of Rayner Hoff: The Life of a Sculptor with a complementary essay by Manx Aviation and Military Museum director Ivor Ramsden detailing the lives of the Manx ANZAC soldiers featured on our stamps.
Nottingham. Here Rayner began his training as a stonemason with his father, who was employed for the next 30 years as a mason at the magnificent Wollaton Hall. Rayner also enrolled at Nottingham School of Art, but his studies were interrupted by the Great War.
Sculptor Rayner Hoff spent the first eight years of his life on the Isle of Man before moving to England and serving in the British Army during the Great War. After migrating to Sydney in 1923, he became an acclaimed artist and teacher. His war memorial sculptures in Australia have come to represent the spirit of ANZAC in his adopted country.
Rayner enlisted with his brother Tom in 1916 and at first his battalion was posted to a reserve position behind the front in Picardy. Fortunately his skills as a draughtsman were acknowledged and he was transferred to a topographical survey unit of the Royal Engineers in 1917, where he made maps from aerial photos for the remainder of the war. Having witnessed the terrible slaughter of trench warfare, years later he stated that he ‘had seen too much of war to glorify it’.
Although the Hoff name is of Dutch origin, the first Hoff family members to move to the Isle of Man came from Lincolnshire in England. Joseph and George Hoff arrived in the 1880s to work on the new steam railway system, and by 1891, both brothers had married women from long-established Manx families. George’s wife, Elizabeth Amy Coole, had grown up in Cronkbourne Village, Tromode. After their marriage, George and Elizabeth Hoff lived in St Helena Cottage near Woolf’s Brewery and Mineral Water Works, in Spring Valley, Braddan, where George was employed as a bricklayer. Their second child, George Rayner Hoff, was born on 27th November 1894. He was named after his father, but was known by his middle name. As a child, Rayner was fascinated by the folklore on the Island - he and his brothers and sisters grew up hearing stories of fairies, goblins and giants. These tales stayed with him and were referenced in his many later depictions of mythological subjects. In Douglas, George Hoff worked on public buildings, such as the Market Place and St Matthew’s Church, and also taught woodcarving in Derby Square. The family were prospering until a banking crisis hit the Island. In 1902, the Hoff family moved to Lanercost in Cumbria, and then to 14
After demobilisation in 1919, Rayner received an ex-service award that allowed him to attend London’s Royal College of Art from 1920 until his graduation in 1922. He studied sculpture and modelling in the same class as Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, and won the prestigious Rome Scholarship in 1922. During his time in Italy, he accepted an appointment as a teacher of drawing, modelling and sculpture in Sydney and he arrived in Australia with his wife and daughter in July 1923. Soon after his arrival in Australia, Rayner Hoff produced works for several war memorials, including the Dubbo War Memorial, the National War Memorial in Adelaide and the Anzac War Memorial in Sydney’s Hyde Park. His memorial sculpture avoided heroic images of war, and was frequently challenging and controversial. Hoff was commissioned to create the sculptures for the Adelaide War Memorial in South Australia in 1926. He produced two unique stylised winged marble spirits or angels, which hover imposingly above his figurative bronze sculpture Youth below. The Memorial was unveiled on Anzac Day 1931, before a crowd of almost 75,000.
A public meeting to appeal for funds for a war memorial for Sydney was held on 25th April 1916, the first anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli. Fundraising for the Memorial was slow When Hoff arrived in 1923, the people of Sydney were still suffering from the devastating effects of the war. Many soldiers had returned mentally scarred or wounded, and in New South Wales 21,000 out of the 120,000 who had enlisted had died. A memorial as a place of remembrance, built to honour the lives that were lost, became a pressing need. In 1929 a competition was finally announced for the design of the Anzac War Memorial in Hyde Park. The young architect C. Bruce Dellit submitted a successful design which was chosen from one hundred and seventeen entries. Dellit contacted Hoff in 1930 and they began their long and fruitful collaboration on the Memorial. They worked closely together on the design and placement of the 37 sculptures, and by May 1932 Hoff’s maquettes were all approved by the Trustees of the Memorial. Designed by Dellit in the shape of an Art Deco ziggurat, the Memorial stands at 30 metres high. The exterior sculptures include sixteen seated and four standing figures, four cast stone reliefs and two ten metre long bronze reliefs. Inside, relief sculptures line the walls, and the ‘Well of Contemplation’ holds the now iconic bronze sculpture Sacrifice. All these monumental sculptures were made in Hoff’s large studio at the National Art School where he taught in Darlinghurst, Sydney. He employed six of his students to work with him for three years on the sculptures, which werefirst hand drawn by Hoff before maquettes were made. They were then scaled up to full size in clay, and moulds were made in plaster. Some, like the exterior reliefs and Sacrifice, were sent to England for casting in bronze, while the rest were cast in synthetic stone (a mixture of ground granite and cement) in Sydney.
The work was completed for the official opening of the Anzac War Memorial by the Duke of Gloucester on the 24th November 1934. The Memorial stands as a respected place of remembrance and a testament to the rare talent and vision of Bruce Dellit and Rayner Hoff. DEBORAH BECK National Art School, Sydney DEBORAH BECK is an Australian historian, writer and artist who has exhibited her work widely. She is currently lecturer, archivist and collections manager at the National Art School, Sydney. She is the author of Hope in Hell and Set in Stone which won a NSW Premier’s History Award in 2012. Her biography of Hoff Rayner Hoff: The Life of a Sculptor was published by NewSouth Books in 2017. MANX ANZACS Work was not easy to find in the Isle of Man in the early years of the 20th century. Many young men left the Island for the developing countries of the British Empire and America. On the outbreak of war many of them joined the armies of Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. John Joseph Corteen was a painter who emigrated to Australia from Castletown. Only a few days after signing up with the Australian Infantry he left for Egypt. His newly-formed unit trained constantly during the voyage, arriving on the Gallipoli peninsula on 4th September. They saw regular action for three months until December when they were evacuated and moved to the Western Front where they took part in many of the major battles from July 1916 to the war’s end. During his service he suffered from recurrent ear infections which were made worse by shells exploding close to him. This led to him spending time in hospital but he survived the war without further injury and in July 1919 he was discharged and returned to Castletown to live. John Gell of Pembroke House on Castletown Promenade was in the 4th Australian Infantry. He was killed in the Suvla Bay landings at Gallipoli. His exact date of death is unknown but it was between 6th and 8th August 1915. He was 27.

Charles Stanley Nicholson emigrated to New Zealand from Douglas in 1907 and worked as a cheesemaker. He enlisted in the Machine Gun Section of the 1st New Zealand Rifle Brigade in May 1915. His unit shipped to the Middle East where he saw his first action against the Turkish Army. The brigade then moved to the Somme region of France where, on Friday 15th September 1916, his machine gun team was moving into action when a shell exploded amongst them. Two of the team were wounded and one was killed but Charles vanished without a trace. The army held an enquiry into his disappearance and it was concluded that the exploding shell must have completely destroyed his body. He was 29. Good mates Thomas Sayle Corlett and Robert Joseph Caley emigrated to Western Australia from Ballaugh in 1913. Both took up farming before enlisting together in the 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion in February 1916. They arrived in France in November 1916. Robert was wounded in June 1917 and again in September 1918 but he survived the war. Tom was killed by shellfireon 19th October 1917 in the Third Battle of Passchendaele. He was 29.
A fellow Manxman in his regiment wrote to George’s parents, telling them that he “was wounded whilst going out to find a close comrade, only to find his friend gone.” He slowly recovered and was sent back to the battlefront where he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in July 1918. Only a month later, on 9th August 1918, he was killed aged 29. He left a wife and two children in Australia. Samuel Robinson Rothwell was a telegraphist aged 43 when he enlisted in the 12th Australian Infantry in February 1915. His wife is recorded as living in Duke Street in Douglas. He was at the Dardanelles by May 1915 but had to be evacuated to Egypt suffering from dysentery in August. He was later discharged from the army due to deafness and he died in an accident in Australia in 1921. His wife never joined him in Australia; she was sent his war medals in 1925.
Many of the Manxmen who were wounded or suffered from disease at the Dardanelles were evacuated to the large military hospitals on the island of Malta. Many of them sent letters home and one of the first to write was Private John Moore, who emigrated from Foxdale to Australia and was Lance Corporal George Roberts emigrated to Australia in 1912 in the Australian Army. He was wounded at the Dardanelles from Port St Mary. He was a hairdresser before joining the 7th and wrote home from Malta but he didn’t have much to say Battalion, Australian Army in November 1916 and was sent to about the place other than “It is very hot here and you get bit to pieces by the mosquitoes.” France where he was badly wounded in September 1917.

THE STAMPS
IVOR RAMSDEN Museum Director, is a retired civil servant who, in his own words “lives and breathes the Museum.” He has always had an interest in aviation and military history and in archaeology and was part of a team of volunteers who, in 2000, opened the Manx Aviation and Military Museum.

ANZAC stands for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. On 25th April 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey. The Anzacs landed on Gallipoli and met fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. Their plan to knock Turkey out of the war failed, and the campaign resulted in the loss of 8,000 Australian soldiers. Anzac Day on 25th April is now a national day of remembrance and commemoration, and is centred around the major war memorials across Australia and New Zealand.
83p – Sacrifice; Rayner Hoff with his sculpture Sacrifice; Kangaroo paw (Anigozanthos), floral emblem of Western Australia £1.25 – Aviator (detail), Air Force Officer; Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), significant for Australians as it is found on the Gallipoli peninsula £1.40 – External bas relief (detail); Blue gum (Eucalypts globulus), floral emblem of Tasmania £1.75 – Female angel (detail), National War Memorial, Adelaide; Flanders poppy (Papaver rhoeas) £2.05 – Male angel (detail), National War Memorial; Golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha), Australia’s symbol of celebration, national unity and remembrance The golden stars on selected stamps represent the Hall of Memory in the Anzac War Memorial.
The golden stars that cover the ceiling of the Hall of Memory in the Anzac War Memorial symbolise the men and women from New South Wales who served during the Great War.
