Welcome to our Spring 2021 Newsletter Dear Friends Today has been very special for Isle of Man Stamps & Coins as we hosted His Excellency The Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard Gozney and Lady Gozney at Postal Headquarters to recognise the 95th birthday of HM The Queen. Sir Richard is a very knowledgeable philatelist and avid postcard writer so was thrilled to receive a set of Calf of Man postcards to send to anywhere in the world. He agreed it’s better by letter!
Like so many we were saddened to hear of the passing of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. We have fond memories of meeting His Royal Highness back in 2003 when he attended Tynwald Day.
It has brought me a great deal of pleasure to be able to congratulate Her Majesty on her 95th birthday alongside ten fellow postal administrations with the issue of the ‘Devoted To Your Service Joint Sheetlet’. It’s our way of recognising and celebrating the values we all share through our common association with HM Queen Elizabeth II by uniting the individual stamp collections from all eleven Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories. It is also a wonderful reminder of the scope of the CCPA (Conference of Commonwealth Administrators), an organization which aims to enhance the quality, range and accessibility of postal services within the Commonwealth. Our postal collection (see page 10) further unites all postal administrations and is testimony to the CCPA’s mission statement. With all good wishes
Maxine
Best wishes to Maxine and Stamp Issue Coordinator Paul Ford, who both celebrated their 60th birthday in April, from all the team at Isle of Man Post Office STAMP ACTIVE We were proud to sponsor Stamp Active’s 2020 ‘My Favourite Things’ competition, aimed at encouraging stamp collecting amongst the younger generation. Winners from a series of age groups received a voucher to spend on the Isle of Man Stamps & Coins website where we hope they will be spoilt for choice! Congratulations to all winners and participants.

News Highlights LADY COLIN CAMPBELL MARKS HM THE QUEEN’S 95TH BIRTHDAY WITH A SPECIAL VIDEO On the event of Her Majesty’s 95th Birthday in April, we were delighted that issue text writer, Royal author and TV personality Lady Colin Campbell took the time to discuss her collaboration with us on her own YouTube channel. The result is an enthralling watch as Lady Colin pays tribute to Her Majesty as she reaches the latest milestone in a remarkable life. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Lady Colin for taking the time to support our issue, and if you haven’t yet seen it, the video is available to view at iompost.com/devoted.
RUSKIN’S GUILD OF ST. GEORGE We were delighted to collaborate with the Guild of St. George and the Ashmolean Museum who were both instrumental in the development of our latest stamp collection – ‘Ruskin – There is no wealth but life’. The stamps celebrate the life and legacy of one of Victorian Britain’s most influential figures, and both organisations provided context on their relationship with Ruskin, forming an overview and history of his life, including his impact on the Isle of Man. Dr. Rachel Dickinson, Master of the Guild of St. George said “On behalf of Ruskin’s Guild and our 320 Companions around the world, can I express our delight and appreciation for this beautiful acknowledgement of John Ruskin’s founding of the Guild 150 years ago in partnership with the Guild and the Ashmolean Museum. In his lifetime, Ruskin’s ideas, values and his writing across a dazzling range of subjects had a colossal influence on public debate and thought in the 19th century. As an educational charity committed to making lives better through the lens of art, craft and the rural economy, we are delighted to celebrate the continued importance of Ruskin’s ideas in the 21st century’

CALF DEDICATION In April we issued our postal stamp issue, The Calf of Man, a ten stamp collection in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Manx National Trust, now part of Manx National Heritage. Isle of Man Post Office is honoured to dedicate this issue to Dr. Trevor Norton (Sheffield, 1940–Isle of Man, 2021), formerly Professor of Marine Biology at Liverpool University and Director of the Port Erin Marine Laboratory, Isle of Man
(1983–2005). Dr. Norton was a long-serving, well-respected and supportive Trustee of the Manx Museum and National Trust serving from 1984 to 2012. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our very best wishes to Edmund Southworth, Director at Manx National Heritage, as he enters retirement. His advice and support has been invaluable since taking up the post in 2009. Pictured is Dr. Trevor Norton. 3
New Collection
Issue Date: 12.04.21 ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE PRESENTS A SET OF TEN STAMPS WHICH CELEBRATES THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE, UNIQUE CHARACTER AND OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY OF THIS PRECIOUS TINY ISLAND AT THE SOUTHERN TIP OF THE ISLE OF MAN. The issue spotlights aspects of the wide-ranging expert conservation stewardship of Manx National Heritage in the 70th year since the Calf was taken on by the Manx National Trust. The Calf of Man’s nature conservation has made a significant contribution to the Isle of Man’s designation as a UNESCO Biosphere. Dr Erica Spencer writes… A narrow, swirling tidal race of water separates the small island known as the Calf of Man from the Manx mainland. The name Calf is believed to have been derived from the Norse word Kalfr which provides an apt description as it translates to ‘small island close to larger one’. The Calf, as it is known locally, is comprised of steep, craggy cliffs topped with maritime heath, heather moor and open grassland. In the past, the island has been farmed and today many of these buildings are still evident. The Calf is owned by a charitable trust created by statute, the Manx Museum and National Trust and now trading as Manx National Heritage. In its original form, the Trust had no powers to acquire land but this was rectified 70 years ago in 1951, largely as the result of the initiative of Deemster Percy Cowley. The Manx Museum and National Trust Act in 1951 established the Manx National Trust as a separate committee of the Manx Museum and Ancient Monuments Trustees enabling land to be acquired. With their newly created powers, the Trust were now in the position to begin to look at conserving areas of land which were significant in a local and often national context. The Calf was one of their first objectives, initially leasing the island from the National Trust for England and Wales on a peppercorn rent, before outright ownership was transferred to the Manx Museum and National Trust in 1986. On securing the small island, the Trust began to run it as a nature reserve and Bird Observatory. The Calf became an officially accredited Bird Observatory in 1962 and now has accumulated over 60 years of 4
continuous bird data collection. Manx Wildlife Trust’s seasonal wardens now run the Observatory and visitor accommodation in the former farmhouse. Due to its position in the Irish Sea, the importance of the Calf as a bird migration route was quickly realised. One species whose appearance on the Calf always heralds the advent of summer is the Common Whitethroat Sylvia communisis and bird ringing has shown us that many of the Whitethroats that breed on the Calf return to overwinter in the African Sahara. Named due to its close links with the Isle of Man, the Manx Shearwater, Puffinus puffinus, colony on the Calf was once very significant and the birds were harvested annually for their eating quality and for their oil. Unfortunately, these ground nesting birds were all but wiped out by the arrival of the brown rat, Rattus norvegicus, from a ship wreck in the 1790s. In 2012, the Manx Shearwater Recovery Project was set up to eradicate the rats and allow the ground nesting Shearwaters to return to breed. The project is still running but has seen much success, with in excess of 600 pairs of Shearwaters estimated to be breeding on the Calf. As you may expect the coastal fringes of the Calf can become a hostile environment in which to survive, particularly in the winter. Plants such as the Thrift or Sea Pinks, Armeria maritima, are adapted to enable them to flourish in heavily saline conditions. The Calf landscape also provides habitat for a diversity of species including the dramatic Garden Tiger Moth, Arctia caja, whose caterpillars provide a food source for many young birds. In decline nationally, due to intensive land use practices, the moth is able to find refuge on the small island.
The Atlantic Grey Seal, Halichoerus grypus, also seeks protection amongst the rocky crevasses and ledges of the Calf where the females haul out to give birth between September and November. They suckle their single pup for around 3-4 weeks before returning to the sea. The cool, clear waters around the Calf are brimming with marine life, from the microscopic zooplankton right through the food chain to the fish which provide food for the seals and sea birds. Species such as the Lion’s Mane Jellyfish, Cyanea capillata, thrive in the waters off the Calf, now a protected Marine Nature Reserve.
Isle of Man Post Office is honoured to dedicate this issue to Dr. Trevor Norton (Sheffield, 1940–Isle of Man, 2021), formerly Professor of Marine Biology at Liverpool University and Director of the Port Erin Marine Laboratory, Isle of Man (1983–2005). Dr. Norton was a long serving, well-respected and supportive Trustee of the Manx Museum and National Trust serving from 1984 to 2012.
The Calf also boasts a rich history of human settlement as a result of several centuries of farming and, more recently, the 1818 Stevenson-designed lighthouses. Arguably the most significant piece of the island’s history is the Manx Celtic pre-Norse Crucifixion Stone which was found in 1773 when field walls were being built. It shows Christ with his arms outstretched on the cross and is probably derived from an early Christian chapel or keeil.
Manx National Heritage
For the visitor to the island, the journey by boat provides an opportunity to see a number of different sea bird species and for those who are lucky enough, porpoises and dolphins. As you step off the boat, onto the Calf, you are met with the realisation that you have reached a very special place.
Manx National Heritage, the trading name of the Manx Museum & National Trust, is a registered charity no.603 and the national heritage organisation for the Isle of Man. The organisation’s role includes management of a significant proportion of the Island’s physical heritage assets including over 3,000 acres of coastline and landscape. For further information please visit: manxnationalheritage.im Manx Wildlife Trust The Calf of Man Bird Observatory houses a team of Manx Wildlife Trust wardens and volunteers who run a number of projects to record and help a range of native wildlife. Dr Erica Spencer has had many years’ experience working as an ecologist both on the Island and in the UK. She is employed by MNH as their ecologist and environmental planner. Part of her role is to advise on planning applications where there may be a conflict with wildlife, habitat or implications for the wider environment through pollution, loss of breeding sites or reduction in an ecosystems ability to function naturally. She also advises on wildlife issues and habitat management, conservation and enhancement. Research plays a large part in increasing our understanding of the natural world and MNH are always keen to support this and to undertake research projects which will directly benefit land and species management.

Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to issue this set of six stamps in celebration of the life and legacy of one of Victorian Britain’s most influential figures, John Ruskin. The Guild of St. George, set-up by Ruskin 150 years ago, played a pivotal role in the history of the Laxey Woollen Mills, a Manx institution that continues to practice traditional crafting methods to this day. John Ruskin (1819-1900) was a writer, artist and philanthropist, and a fierce critic of prevailing social and political norms. He wrote about nature, art and architecture, craftsmanship, geology, botany, Greek myth, education - a dizzying variety of subjects. Driven by his deep faith in social justice, his concern for the impact of industrial society on people and their environment, and his passionate advocacy of a sustainable relationship between people, craft and nature, he established the Guild of St George in 1871 to right some of the social wrongs of the day and make England a happier and more beautiful place in which to live and work. He gave the Guild a substantial art collection for the benefit and education of the working people of Sheffield, where it continues to thrive. He encouraged contemporaries to give funds and assets to the Guild so that it could buy land on which people might live in greater harmony with the earth, and express themselves through craft, food production and good livelihoods. Ruskin Land in the Wyre forest remains to this day. In his lifetime and after, Ruskin commanded international respect, attracting praise from figures as varied as Leo Tolstoy, George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans), Marcel Proust, Charlotte Brontë, Le Corbusier, William Morris and Mahatma Gandhi. He was cited as an influence by Clement Attlee and the founders of the National Trust, among many others. Early Companions of the Guild included Egbert Rydings, and in conjunction with the Guild and with Ruskin’s support, Rydings established what was initially called the St George’s Woollen Mills in Laxey on the Isle of
Man in 1881. Ruskin’s Guild thrives in the 21st century; it is now a registered charity which puts Ruskin’s ideas into practice in the modern world. THE ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM John Ruskin has a unique association with Oxford University. Visits to Oxford between 1830 and 1834 preceded his matriculation as a Gentleman Commoner at Christ Church in 1836; he won the Newdigate Prize for Poetry, resulting in his only meeting with William Wordsworth at its recital in 1839, and took the degree of Master of Arts in October 1843. Lifelong friendships were forged there, especially with Henry Wentworth Acland, later Regius Professor of Medicine, whom Ruskin helped in the establishment of the Oxford University Museum and with the design of its building; on one visit in 1857 he met Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll). Elected to an Honorary Studentship at Christ Church in 1858, he made the University a gift of 48 drawings by J M W Turner in 1861. These are held in the Ashmolean Museum. With the support of Acland and Henry Liddell, Dean of Christ Church (and father of Alice), Ruskin was appointed the first Slade Professor of Fine Art in 1869. One of his first acts as Slade Professor was to establish a Drawing School within the University. It was separate from the Oxford School of Art, held in its own room in the University Galleries (now the Predynastic Gallery at the Ashmolean Museum) and with a Master (initially Alexander Macdonald) paid for by Ruskin. He deposited a collection of examples for instruction and copy, constantly re-arranging and re-cataloguing them even after a formal Deed of Gift had been made in May 1875.

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR & LADY GOZNEY VISIT STAMPS & COINS DIVISION OF ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE
Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO) was delighted to welcome His Excellency The Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard Gozney and Lady Gozney to Postal Headquarters on Wednesday 21st April for a tour of its Stamps & Coins division, on the occasion of Her Majesty The Queen’s 95th birthday. Hosted by the Chairman of IOMPO Ms Julie Edge MHK, His Excellency and Lady Gozney’s visit began with a brief history of the Stamps & Coins division, which has become worldrenowned for its variety of stamp issues since IOMPO became independent in 1973. This was undertaken by Maxine Cannon, General Manager of Stamps & Coins, showing the guests a selection of stamps from the earliest to one of its most recent issues the ‘Devoted to Your Service’ collection – a set of stamps which reflects upon Her Majesty The Queen’s lifetime of devotion to the Crown, her people and her service. This was a highly apt issue to feature on a day which saw Her Majesty turn 95 years of age. His Excellency and Lady Gozney then undertook a tour of Stamps & Coins, based in the Integrated Mailing Solutions (IMS) division of IOMPO. The tour was led by Russell Cowin, General Manager of IMS, and enabled the honoured guests to see first-hand the day-to-day workings of the division, how the stamp issues are produced,
collated and packaged ready to be sent to all corners of the globe, as well as meet with the team to learn more. There was also the opportunity for His Excellency to try his hand at postmarking a first day cover! Before the visit came to a close, Ms Edge MHK presented a framed set of the ‘Devoted to Your Service’ collection as a keepsake of the HM The Queen’s milestone birthday and His Excellency’s visit to IOMPO. Ms Julie Edge MHK, Chairman of IOMPO said: “It was a privilege to welcome His Excellency and Lady Gozney to Postal Headquarters so they could learn more about our Stamps & Coins division. His Excellency has been a keen supporter of Isle of Man stamps throughout his tenure and so to host a visit was a great opportunity for us to further highlight the excellent work undertaken by this team. Isle of Man stamps play an important role in promoting our beautiful Island by featuring on letters and parcels to destinations around the world. As IOMPO is only two years away from reaching its 50th anniversary as an independent postal authority, the visit was a timely opportunity for us all to reflect on the fascinating history of Isle of Man stamps thus far, from being featured at numerous notable events to even travelling to space and back!
