In this issue... Culture Vannin 40th Anniversary • The Creative Network David Bowie: Actor NEWS Issue Number 178 Summer 2022
Hello from the Isle of Man. It is a real pleasure to present newsletter 178 which is the first of our 50th anniversary year.
To have worked in collaboration with designer Jonathan Barnbrook and text writers Nicholas Pegg and Mark Kermode has been a privilege. I must acknowledge the patience and determination of my colleague Paul Ford who has brought the collection together over a period of five years in total. A five star production as they would say at the movies! We do hope you enjoy this landmark issue.

The icing on our birthday cake has been the generous opportunity to work with the IOM Post Office on this stamp issue to showcase the range of our member artists’ work to the wider world”.

10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CREATIVE NETWORK CELEBRATED THROUGH NEW ISSUE OF STAMPS
Dear Friends,
The 40th Anniversary of Culture Vannin artwork by Jay Cover is a pictorial summary of what we have set out to achieve over the last 50 years; to share with our collectors worldwide the thriving and proud cultural heritage of our Island and our place in the wider world. Not a day goes by on our Island without an activity taking place to enhance our cultural wellbeing and long may that continue.
Marking the release of our Creative Network stamp issue we were delighted to attend a gathering of all 10 featured members at their studios in Grenaby. This set of ten stamps, designed by member Carola Rush, assembles ten pieces of artwork from a collective of talented local artists, part of the Creative Network, to celebrate Manx art and their tenth anniversary.

The envelopes have different postmarks, one for each of the key events of the Jubilee weekend, two of which Edward and his family attended at the invitation of the Lord Chamberlain. Edward explained “It was really, really lovely, a special experience I am sure I’ll remember it forever.”

ONCHAN POST BOX CROWNED WITH PLATINUM TOPPER
On 1st June we met with Gillian Corkill who created a fabulous Jubilee Post Box Topper that can be seen crowning the Post Box at Onchan Post Office. Our Platinum Jubilee Committee handed Gillian a bouquet of flowers to thank her for this wonderful crocheted piece of art – well received from all of the community.
Culture is made and re-made each day by amazing people and communities so that everyone can enjoy it. The stories captured so beautifully in this set of stamps reflect the journey of the past 40 years of a cultural charity working with the community to celebrate Manx culture and cultural heritage. They tell of the cultural richness of the Isle of Man and the importance of culture and language to our sense of identity and community, both nationally and internationally.
celebrate Manx culture and all those who create, practise and enjoy it, and who have done so for generations.
Isle of Man Post Office is happy to celebrate this fortieth milestone in Culture Vannin’s very positive journey. They have helped and nurtured so many groups and individuals and made so many friends along the way. Our set of six stamps is a joyous commemoration and also marks a truly affirmative Manx collaboration with artist Jay Cover.
Under the name of the Manx Heritage Foundation for many decades, or the more recent trading name of Culture Vannin, the ment funded charity has worked to support and promote Manx culture by partnering with the community, Government
Jay Cover’s wonderful illustrations capture all aspects of the wide remit of Culture Vannin. They show the sense of movement and joy which is at the heart of a living culture which is accessible and relevant to everyone. Archaeologists, artists, musicians, dancers, and deemsters rub shoulders with ecologists, historians and linguists - ‘Gaelg aboo’ – ‘hurray for the Manx language’! Can you spot Archibald Knox carrying one of the Island’s iconic buildings? Have you read T E Brown’s Betsy Lee? And who is about to receive the Isle of Man’s highest cultural award, the Reih Bleeaney TheseVanannan?stamps
Culture Vannin’s story started in 1980 when a petition was presented to Tynwald by Sheila Tarr, which called for a permanent centre for the Island’s art, culture, craft, language, literature, festivals and so much more. The vision was for a space that could be used by different cultural groups for conferences, meetings, performances, archives, and even as a youth hostel; the idea was to give Manx culture and cultural heritage a focal point, a home. The report of the Select Committee chaired by Clare Christian MHK led to the Manx Heritage Foundation Act 1982. The Foundation set about telling the stories of the Isle of Man, publishing books and films, collecting oral history recordings, and supporting traditional culture and language through recordings, education and development work.
agencies and business in order to fulfil its founding objects. Communication, education and accessibility are key to this, and development work for Manx language, Manx music and dance, and online and educational resources makes sure that is possible. Culture Vannin also supports grassroots projects through an annual grants scheme, knowing that the time, knowledge, skill and enthusiasm of those involved with Manx culture adds enormous value by effectively applying a multiplier effect to what are often modest sums of money.

Our intangible cultural heritage includes traditions handed down over the centuries, performing arts, festivals and calendar customs, knowledge of the environment around us, traditional crafts, and anything else passed on by word of mouth. It’s also, quite crucially, about what we do today. How we understand ourselves is a key way of finding a voice in an increasingly globalised world; if we understand where we have come from, we have more chance of understanding and respecting other cultures around the world.

The Gift - Digital illustration by Bruno Cavellec
Graham makes objects from local timbers, each is unique and highlights the joys of the colour and texture of the wood. These bowls are keepsake boxes made from burrs with the natural edge retained, with finely finished wood to display the intricate patterns. The lids are ebonised oak and made to be in deliberately stark contrast to the complex colours and textures of the bowls/boxes.
The artwork and the title were inspired by a letter Bruno’s mother wrote to him, which he found after her passing. The image illustrates the saying: “You mean the world to me”.

Child’s Dress - Hand-sewn gampi silk tissue with pressed wild flowers by Myra Gilbert Myra’s background and practice is in the three dimensional discipline of fashion design. She has always been drawn to the textures and patterns in the natural world around her.
Although the techniques used in the making of this picture are fairly traditional, the view is a ‘constructed’ one arrived at after several boat trips taking photographs and making small drawings. These were worked up in paintings (this is the third and most ambitious) which tried to reflect the massiveness of the rock, the sound of the numerous noisy birds and the experience of being there on the water looking up at the pinnacle.
This hand-sewn gampi silk tissue dress covered with pressed wild Manx flowers, illustrates the beauty of the natural hedgerows here on the Isle of Man. It also represents the childhood clothes made by
Sarah has evolved a fascination with traditional Manx gateways to old farmsteads across the Island. Sadly these gateways with their white stone posts are decreasing in number rapidly. Having seen Sarah’s interest in gateways, a friend told her of a pair of gateposts to a farm on the coast road from Peel to Kirk Michael. Sarah drew them several times, getting attached to their almost sculptural appearance. They were not in good repair, but recently driving past, Sarah was sad to see them gone, now demolished.
Three Boxes - Turned-wooden vessels by Graham Hall
Isle of Man Post Office takes great pleasure in presenting a small selection of talented local artists who represent the membership of this hard-working and diverse group. Our collection of ten stamps marks the tenth anniversary of the collective:

Wren - Illustration on music score by Dawn Kennaugh
Gateway at Ballagyr - Oil on canvas by Sarah Devereau
Black Rhino - Ceramic stoneware by Erica Kermode
This accomplished and dynamic large scale painting features a well-known landmark in the south of the Island. Unusually pictured from the sea it is a dramatic sight and refuge to hundreds of seabirds and numerous species.
The painting is less about a photographic image and more about the memory and experience hence the looser brushwork and liberties taken with perspective.
Myra’s mother for her and her three sisters. Myra chose to use tissue paper as a medium because of its ephemeral tactile quality and its frequent association with the packaging of delicate or precious items of clothing. Her aim was to express fragility and transparency of those memories associated with her distant past self through ghostly or husk-like handsewn garments.
Dawn loves to use old paper as it gives beautiful muted tones when painted on with acrylic paint. She also relishes the challenge of re-purposing old things. When painting her illustrations of birds on old music scores, she loves to create an interaction of the new bird with the old musical notes. Hunt the Wren is an ancient Manx custom still performed each Boxing Day where this song is sung.
Erica Kermode is a ceramic artist, who is inspired by wildlife and the natural world. She creates animal and bird sculptures in stoneware clay, based at her studio in the wilds of the Isle of Man. This Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis), is one of a series of pieces of work showing critically endangered species.
Bruno began to explore digital art several years ago with the intention of creating a wider range of

This image reflects a painterly approach to Eric’s surroundings in Peel. He explores the colours and textures of the three dimensional architectural forms to express his fascination with forms as we perceive them within local spaces. Moving from abstract painting to photography has enabled him to reflect this aspect of the rugged, jumbled charms of Peel.

Maureen came across this Sea Kale on Castletown shoreline in the south of the Island. She photographed and sketched the beautiful plant and then interpreted what she had captured using free-machine embroidery with some hand stitching on a felt background. Maureen looks upon her work as painting with needle, stitch and thread rather than paint.

“I feel like an actor when I’m on stage, rather than a rock artist,” David Bowie once observed. It was a telling remark. A man of many parts, Bowie turned his hand not only to music and acting, but to painting, writing and filmmaking – and what linked them all was his compelling sense of theatre. On stage, on screen, on canvas or in song, the notion of performance is always there. Time and again in his lyrics, Bowie identifies himself as the player in his own drama. “I felt like an actor,” he sings in Ziggy Stardust’s opening number ‘Five Years’. On Aladdin Sane he adopts the character of an ageing Hollywood star to sing ‘Cracked Actor’, a title later appropriated for a famous documentary portrait of Bowie himself. On the sleeve of Hunky Dory he even describes himself as “the actor”. The theatrical sensibility which permeated Bowie’s songwriting spilled out into his legendary live performances: from the physical theatre of the Ziggy Stardust shows to the revolutionary staging concepts of the Diamond Dogs tour (“my set is amazing,” he sang on the accompanying album, and on stage it came true), and from the stark monochrome aesthetic of the Thin White Duke concerts to the rainbow-hued rock theatre of the Glass Spider tour, Bowie persistently blazed a trail for others to follow, redefining the parameters and possibilities for the staging of live music. The same is true of his videos, which found him embracing with relish an ever-changing succession of roles, from the New Romantic

Nicholas Pegg writes…
So it’s hardly surprising that when Bowie set aside his music and turned his hand to the thespian art, he did so with great proficiency. Many a rock star has taken a stab at acting, but with more than 20 feature films, half a dozen television roles and a celebrated Broadway run to his credit, Bowie the actor was no dilettante, building up a substantial body of work. In the wake of his breakthrough role in The Man Who Fell to Earth, casting directors often regarded him as a go-to guy for outcasts and loners, a niche which happened to suit Bowie’s verytasteswell. As both actor and musician, he was always drawn to life’s outsiders, to the people stranded on the fringes of society: Newton, Baal, Celliers, the Elephant Man. And whatever the role, from Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ to the ruler of Atlantis in Spongebob Squarepants, it was unfailingly tackled with intelligence, warmth and Onsincerity.stage, the song ‘Cracked Actor’ was accompanied by one of Bowie’s wittiest routines, as he donned a Shakespearean doublet and brandished a human skull, a rock star Hamlet pondering the ephemerality of life and the vanity of fame. It was quintessential Bowie: a cracked actor to the tips of his fingers.
Isle of Man Post Office proudly presents David Bowie as a performer in this set of eight stamps spanning fifty years of his remarkably varied career. The set also celebrates his performance in Everybody Loves Sunshine, filmed on the Isle of Man, and his little-known creative visits to his long-term collaborator Rick Wakeman, for many years an Isle of Man resident.
Pierrot of ‘Ashes to Ashes’ to the love-struck Buster Keaton of ‘Miracle Goodnight’, from the callow youth and preening rock god of ‘Blue Jean’ to the button-eyed enigma of ‘★’ and ‘Lazarus’.
