WELCOME

Dot’s Message s I write it is a most beautiful

A summer day on our Island.

I drove along Douglas promenade this morning and looked out towards the Tower of Refuge, the sea was so calm. Although the promenade has been crammed with TT fans, the beach no longer fills up with throngs of visitors and locals as it did many moons ago. Each day during the height of the summer the post office would process thousands of postcards, we even had a seasonal post office in the Villa Marina Colonnade - staff clammered to work there as it was close to Felices Ice Cream Parlour! John McGuinness and Dot at the TT launch

We have captured the spirit of the bygone tourist era with our Tails of the Tailless issue inspired

Chaghteraght Dot by a local collection of Manx cat postcards, which we hope you will enjoy. The second part of our Internment Camp series also derives in part from antique postcards but features postal history of a different nature: handstamps, cachets and even Carl Fogarty and Dot an unofficial postage stamp at the TT Grandstand which was used in the Knockaloe Camp during WW1. Unlike the mass-produced tourist cards these hand-engraved works are rich in detail and were produced in a very different context. I found the research material for the stamp issue truly fascinating. I hope you have a lovely summer, with all good wishes

Royal Collectables The Complete Royal Wedding Collectable – Special Folder A stunning folder containing the cream of our Royal Wedding philatelic items: the world's first William and Catherine engagement postal tribute; the officially approved wedding commemorative sheetlet postmarked 29th April, and - the highlight of the collectable - a complete sheetlet of stamps and images from the wedding day. NEW RELEASE • Issue Date –23rd June 2011

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of six stamps featuring artworks from a series of Manx Cat postcards. There is a Victorian saying: “There is no end of cats in the Isle of Man because they have no ends. These are the totally tailless”. There is no end to them either, despite repeated predictions about their imminent extinction. They still roam free on their Island home and internationally are prized pets. Animated cartoons have portrayed Manx cats as dim-wits like Stimpson J. Cat, or cowards, like Mayor Manx in the Hanna-Barbera 1990s series Swat Cats. Really, they are tough, determined and bright. Their hunting instincts were demonstrated at a World Mousing Championship at a 1964 Calgary cat show. A Manx cat was the fastest to follow a mouse’s scent through a glass maze. Little wonder then, that a Manx cat was a mouser in the House of Lords in the early 1940s and another, the black ‘Peta’, in Britain’s Home Office in the 1960s. A gift from the Island in 1964, ‘Peta’ invaded 10 Downing Street and roughed-up the resident Siamese owned by Prime Minister Harold Wilson. There were no repercussions; however, as The Home Office once ruled that she enjoyed ‘diplomatic status.’ Manx cats have been the companions of royalty and the famous: for example - ship’s cat on the former royal yacht, Britannia. Walt Disney, creator of Mickey Mouse, had a black one. Manxie was a gift from the Isle of Man in 1933 and roamed the Disney studios. The unrealised hope was that he would inspire the creation of a Manx cat playmate for Mickey.

Two Manx cats were adopted by Koko, the Gorilla Foundation’s amazingly communicative lowland gorilla. The first, named All Ball by Koko because she looked like a ball of fur, became an international celebrity. When Koko was told of All Ball’s accidental death she hooted mournfully in painful understanding. Today a Manx cat named Zoe is used as a logo for the American-based Zoe Foundation, whose objective is the creation of a preserve for endangered tigers. The slogan, which applies as much to Manx cats as tigers, is “extinction is not an option”. Throughout the world show standards for Manx cats vary. Traditionally, on the Isle of Man Dimple Rumpies are totally tailless, with an absolute hollow where a tail would begin. Rumpy Risers have a hint of a tail. Stumpies have a little more. Tailed cats, known as Longies, can be Manx if they carry the appropriate genes and display other Manx characteristics that can be passed on to their tailless kittens. Other distinctive features are: a round and large head, a nose longer than that of a good British shorthair, prominent cheeks; ears wide at the base and tapering slightly to a point; hindquarters, exceptionally high; rump round; back short. Of primary importance is a ‘hopping gait.’ The coat must be ‘double’ - open and soft like a rabbit’s; colour - immaterial though the earliest recorded was ‘brown tabby,’ otherwise ‘tiger’ - earth brown with black markings.

ISLE OF MAN

INTERNMENT

POSTAL HISTORY

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a miniature sheet which focuses upon the postal history of the Knockaloe Internment Camp on the Isle of Man. LEFT HAND SIDE OF MINIATURE SHEET (Also, cover image of presentation pack) This depicts a coloured steel engraving of Knockaloe Camp stretching from the main road at Patrick village across Knockaloe Moar Farm out towards the west coast of the Island, which was published by the internees. Inset are pictures of Peel Castle and Patrick Church where some two hundred internees, who died during their internment, were buried; these being repatriated in the 1960s to the German War Cemetery in Staffordshire, England. A smaller black and white version of this engraving, depicting only the Internment Camp itself, was also produced by the internees. TOP PAIR: LEFT HAND STAMP: This postcard depicts a number of the huts, with washing hung out to dry, at Knockaloe Camp in 1916, publisher unknown. RIGHT HAND STAMP: The King George V 1d, first issued on the 28th September 1912, is cancelled by The Camp Knockaloe Peel Double Circle, datestamp 28th October 1915, which was first issued in 1915. This cover is an official Prisoners of War envelope and is not overprinted for specific use at Knockaloe Camp. Also applied to the envelope is the Violet small type Aliens’ Detention Camp Censored Knockaloe, I.O.M. Double Oval which is also known to be used in Black and Blue colours.

BOTTOM PAIR: LEFT HAND STAMP: This postcard by an unknown publisher was issued to send “Easter Greetings to Home” in 1917. Although it does not specifically mention Knockaloe Internment Camp, the card was sent by a Knockaloe internee and the style is characteristic of those produced within its Camps. Also depicted is a clear example of The Camp Knockaloe Peel Double Circle cancelling a “D“ Registration Label, datestamp 14th September 1915, which was first issued in 1915. RIGHT HAND STAMP: The 3d King George V Registered Envelope, first issued in 1912, is cancelled with two strikes of The Camp Knockaloe Peel Double Circle, datestamp 14th September 1915, first issued in 1915. Also affixed to the front of the envelope is the “D” type No. 39 Registration Etiquette, which were temporary labels issued when either a Post Office had run out of labels or were required for special occasions. In this instance, it is reasonable to assume that, with the opening of the Knockaloe Camp Post Office by the British Post Office during 1915, the personalised “Knockaloe Camp, I Of Man” labels had not been printed and issued, hence the use of this temporary label until late 1915. Also applied to the envelope is the Violet small type Aliens’ Detention Camp Censored Knockaloe, I.O.M. Double Oval which is also known to be used in black and blue colours.
