Chaghteraght Dot
busy year continued on a glorious day in
A July when the genuine old-fashioned
motorcycles were out in force enjoying the Centenary of the Mountain Course Vintage Motorcycle re-enactment event. A happy band of riders and well-wishers witnessed the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the original starting line of the 1911 TT Races after which the ‘race’ was re-started and the entourage continued round the course to Ramsey then home. There were many colourful characters in evidence and, incidentally, we think our special collection to mark the event is one of our best-ever collectables.
Dot Tilbury
The plaque was locally-produced at the Pooil Vaaish stone works and unveiled by the Lieutenant-Governor His Excellency Mr Adam Wood ably assisted by vintage motorcycle enthusiast Alex Downie MLC.
In August we were pleased to meet the winners of our Genealogy Prize Draw that we ran in tandem with Manx National Heritage. Mr Robert Shimmin and his wife Sue from Widnes, Cheshire enjoyed travel to the Island, (courtesy of Isle of Man Tourism) and VIP access to the MNH archive including assistance researching their Manx family connections by a genealogist from the IOM Family History Society. Prizegiving Mr Shimmin receives his stamps from Maxine and Dot
The Isle of Man was honoured to host the Commonwealth Youth Games in September which assembled athletes between the ages of 13 and 18 years old from the Commonwealth nations. Seven sports: athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, rugby sevens and swimming were included in the Games and competition was fierce amongst these young athletes. We wonder how many of the competitors will go on to be world class like Jessica Ennis who competed in the ‘Youth Games’ as a young athlete. Our Post Shop played a major part in the celebration as the official merchandise retail outlet in Douglas. The exhibition “Our Sporting Life” at Manx National Heritage’s Manx Museum featured the many local sports men and women who have made it onto the national and world stage. Our miniature sheet and two-pound coin proved hugely popular - all in all it was a wonderful occasion for the Island. Our theme for Christmas this year is ‘Birds in Winter’ featuring the ever-popular wildlife paintings of local artist Jeremy Paul. His inspiration for the illustrations came during the heavy snowfalls of recent winters when he studied local birds in these extremely cold conditions. The issue also includes stamps dedicated to the Europa theme ‘Forests’ and the SEPAC theme ‘Scenery’. This year seems to have flown by, but our 2011 Yearbook is a record of it all: as well as IOM Post Office news, our stamp issue chapters are packed with exclusive stories and images which we feel sure you will enjoy. Next year is going to be very busy as we celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics. We are looking forward to the Olympics because not only have we been fortunate in securing a top British designer to design our wonderful stamps, but also the first race of London 2012 will be the Men’s Cycling Road Race with the Isle of Man’s world cycling superstar Mark Cavendish who is predicted to set the Olympics alight on 28th July 2012… fingers crossed! Mark must surely be in line for the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year - so please help us to get him to the top of the leader board. On behalf of us all, may I wish you a very happy Christmas and healthy New Year.

NEW RELEASE • Issue Date – 1st September 2011
The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of stamps featuring the Narcissus flower commonly known as the Daffodil. The issue is released to coincide with our attendance at the 27th Asian International Stamp Exhibition Wuxi, Jiangsu, China which takes place in November 2011. The stamps form part of a collection of issues from a number of countries depicting Chinese Flora. Daffodils are as well loved in the Isle of Man as they are right across the British Isles. Every Island garden shows its rich drifts of cream and gold to welcome the sun in spring. The flowers are to be seen growing in yellow masses in the Island’s beautiful wooded glens, and landowners have planted thousands of bulbs along roadside hedgerows. The English wild daffodil Narcissus pseudo-narcissus is seldom seen in the wild in the Isle of Man, but two other varieties have naturalised themselves successfully. The dainty scented Narcissus minor is called the ‘Manx Jonquil’ and can be seen widely, especially in the north of the Island. What could be an easier souvenir for a mariner to carry than a pocketful of seeds or a handful of bulbs from foreign parts? In view of the Island’s long seafaring tradition, it has been suggested that Narcissus minor was probably brought home by a Manx sailor direct from the Iberian peninsula. The old cultivar Narcissus telemonius plenus ‘Van Sion’, which in England was first recorded in the seventeenth century, has become so common in Mann that it is referred to as the ‘wild daffodil’. It is a curious bloom, sometimes with just the trumpet doubled, sometimes with a complete double ruff of shaggy petals, and occasionally with green streaks in the yellow. ‘Van Sion’ has been around long enough to acquire folklore and its own name in Manx Gaelic, lus y ghuiy – the ‘goose plant’. It is said to be
unlucky to pick the flowers and bring them indoors before the goslings are hatched. A variation on this, according to the late Dr Larch Garrad, one of the Island’s bestknown botanists and author of “The Manx Garden”, was that the bad luck ceased on May Eve. Narcissus ‘Butter and Eggs’, another double daffodil first recorded in England in 1777, has been identified here, as has the more brightly coloured Narcissus ‘Raggedy Ann’. A rare sub-species of Narcissus poeticus, the pheasant’s eye narcissus, has been identified by the Royal Horticultural Society from a site at Glenbooie near Peel, on the west coast, as Narcissus poeticus ssp. radiiflorus var. exertus. In the 1890s Miss A. M. Crellin of Orrisdale, in the north of the Island, was a noted breeder of daffodils and received an award from the Society.

Jeremy Paul’s
Birds in Winter The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present a set of six stamps which feature original artwork by Island based artist Jeremy Paul. The issue also encompasses the 2011 Europa theme “Forests” and the SEPAC theme of Scenery.
Robin IOM One of our most easily recognised birds, the Robin is almost synonymous with winter appearing on countless Christmas cards! Robins feed on a range of items, including kitchen scraps, commercial birdfood as well as earthworms and other invertebrates. At this time of year they can be very tolerant of each other, being too pre-occupied with the business of feeding and staying warm to be territorial. Come the spring, however, they will see off competing Robins to secure their own breeding ground. Redwing UK Like the Waxwing, the Redwing is a winter visitor to the Island, though their nearest breeding grounds are a little closer, with small numbers breeding in Scotland. Come October large flocks of Redwing and their larger relative, the Fieldfare, arrive on the Island, settling on the many fruit and berry trees that line our hedges and roads, feeding voraciously until the trees are stripped bare and then move on. They often visit gardens, though usually in smaller numbers, feeding on fallen apples, etc. Similar in size to the familiar Song Thrush, the cream eye-stripe and red flank are distinctive. Goldfinch 58p (SEPAC theme) In the last ten or so years this dainty, colourful finch has become a feature of many gardens during the winter, especially in those where Nyjer seed is provided. It is probable that the winter survival rate for Goldfinch has increased, as they supplement their natural diet on food provided by the many people who derive pleasure from watching ‘their’ birds in the garden. The Goldfinch is surely one of the most colourful and engaging of winter visitors, often arriving in flocks of ten or more, creating a riot of red and yellow as they flit through the foliage.
Siskin 68p (Europa 2011 “Forest” theme) Resident all year round the Siskin, one of our smallest finches, will readily visit gardens in the late summer through the winter, taking seed from feeders, often defending their place against larger species such as the Great Tit. Although young birds and females appear rather drab, the male is quite striking with strong yellow-green plumage and a black forehead and neat black bib. The mature conifer plantations of the Island provide many breeding sites, accounting for the increased numbers seen in gardens over the last decade. Waxwing 76p The Waxwing is a true winter visitor to our Island, their breeding grounds covering north-eastern Scandinavia through to west Siberia. Following a good breeding season, when numbers are high or in years when berry supply is poor in their usual wintering areas, large numbers of this striking, Starling sized bird reach the British Isles. Often they are very tolerant of humans, allowing people to get within a few feet, as they feed on any soft fruit and berries they encounter, allowing you to see up-close the beauty of their plumage. Long-tailed Tit £2.00 This is one of the firm favourites of the winter garden scene. A tiny bird that looks like a bundle of feathers with a tail stuck to it, the Long-tailed Tit relies upon a group effort to survive the winter. At night they roost in a tight bundle to conserve body heat, whilst by day they are constantly on the move, staying in contact with the rest of the group with a high-pitched contact call, all designed to minimise the risk of predators catching them. The more that survive the more there is the next night to huddle up with, a real group survival strategy!

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this set of six lavishly tooled stamps to commemorate some of the bravest and most innovative transport solutions created by Top Gear, the UK’s most popular motoring programme. TRIUMPH HERALD SAILBOAT No one has ever designed a successful aquatic car, a vehicle equally at home on both road and water. The reason for this, according to James May, is because aquacars have always embraced the wrong power source. Ever at the forefront of technical innovation, wind-loving Captain Slow turned a classic Triumph into a classic schooner, complete with billowing mainsail and 20footmast. The 'Mayflower' was a simple, eco-friendly solution with just two fatal weaknesses:James’s total lack of sailing ability… and low road bridges. CITROEN GRAND DESIGN For years, Jeremy Clarkson has waged war on caravans and motorhomes, destroying these slow-moving, jackknifing road menaces in ever more inventive ways. If you reckon they’re so rubbish, challenged Top Gear’s producers, why don’t you build your own compact-yetstylish motorhome? Jeremy did, and what a creation it was: a three-storey Citroen with sleek modern lines and its own Japanese contemplation area. Though an imposing sight, the mega-Citroen didn’t cope well with crosswinds. Or falling off a cliff… HAMMERHEAD EAGLE i-THRUST Electric cars should, in theory, be relatively simple to design, with far fewer moving parts than one of those ‘tricksy’ petrol vehicles. Turns out they're actually quite complicated. Tasked with building their own electric car from scratch, the boys borrowed the chassis from a TVR Tamora and the electric motor from a milk float, adding a range of innovative design features including a ‘visibility hatch’ for Richard's head. Despite its rakish good looks and blistering performance, the Hammerhead Eagle i-Thrust failed to impress the independent road testers from Autocar magazine. On the plus side, it did dispose of Stig’s vegetarian cousin... ROBIN RELIANT SPACE SHUTTLE Space shuttles are among the most expensive pieces of engineering in the world, costing literally billions of dollars to build, send into space and bring back down again. James and Richard believed they could save the space industry a bunch of cash by bolting a Reliant Robin – every Yorkshireman's favourite three-wheeler – to a blooming great rocket and standing well back. The Reliant Shuttle took off with a bang, but the landing didn’t go so well… CARAVAN AIRSHIP As we may have mentioned, Top Gear isn’t very keen on caravans. But what if, instead of clogging up our roads, the caravans took to the skies? With the aid of a giant balloon, an old caravan and a dangerous volume of propane, James May set out to discover whether a wobbling holiday home on wheels could be turned into a majestic airship. POLAR HILUX When Jeremy and James were ordered to drive to the North Pole, they declined, pointing out that the Arctic is very cold, very dangerous and very lacking in good pubs. But when Richard rolled up on a traditional polar sled with a team of huskies, James and Jeremy felt obliged to defend the honour of the car and reach the top of the world first. In a Toyota Hilux modified with huge tyres and an escape hatch in the roof, they became the first men to reach the North Pole by car, defeating Hammond and his gang of fetid dogs in the process. After causing a national security scare by wandering into the flyzone of Norwich airport, he concluded it probably couldn’t.

COINS AND COLLECTABLES
Isle of Man Treasury Coins Cooinaghyn Tashtey Vannin Following the introduction of Manx decimal coins in 1971, new designs for the Island’s circulating coins were introduced in 1976.
½p Coin: Herring on an outline of the Isle of Man map. The once prolific herring industry provided the Manx people with their staple diet. Manx kippers produced from smoked herring are World famous. The waters around the Isle of Man, especially the west coast, have been commercially fished for herring since medieval times. 1p Coin: Loughtan Sheep. The Loughtan is an ancient Manx native breed of sheep of unknown origin. The ram usually has four horns although it has been known to have six. The wool is warm brown in colour and is always used in its undyed state. Alternative Manx spellings for this rare breed are Loughtan, Loughtyn or Loghtan. 2p Coin: Manx Shearwater. The largest known colony of Manx Shearwater birds has been recorded on the Calf of Man. The birds were regarded by the Vikings as an omen for disaster when, in 1014, a nocturnal clamour of breeding birds circled above two Viking ships anchored in Calf Sound on the eve of the Battle of Clontarf. The colony was wiped out by a plague of rats (Manx longtails) in the late 18th century. A remarkable recovery has been made recently and many Manx shearwaters can be seen around the Island, especially at Maughold Head in the north east. The species were so called after they were first scientifically identified on the Island in the 17th century.
5p coin: The Laxey Wheel: Officially named Lady Isabella after the wife of the then Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man, the wheel was opened in 1854. It was designed by Manxman Robert Casement to pump out water from the deep Laxey lead mine. It is the largest working waterwheel in the world and measures 72ft. 6in. in diameter and 6ft. wide. There is a viewing platform at the top which is reached by an external spiral staircase. It now forms the centrepiece of the Manx National Heritage’s Mining Heritage Trail. 10p Coin: Triskeles. Known as the Three Legs of Mann, or in Manx ‘Tree Cassyn’, this symbol is indicative of the 9th century Norse Viking settlement in the Isle of Man. Its introduction is attributed to Alexander III of Scotland after gaining control from King Magnus in 1265. The three legged sun symbol had been adopted by the ancient Sicilians and it was believed that it was Magnus’s wife, sister of the King of Sicily, who first introduced the symbol to the Isle of Man. The officially adopted Government version shows the legs running ‘sunwise’, that is clockwise, but there are many recorded cases where they run in the opposite direction. 50p Coin: Viking Longship. The 50p coin shows a Viking longship in full sail over an outline of the Isle of Man map. In 1079 Godred Croven, ‘King Orry’, sailed his longships into Ramsey and up the Sulby River to a point below Skyhill. After a ferocious battle on Skyhill, he routed the Manx inhabitants and his dynasty continued to 1266. A commemorative plaque now stands beside the track on the way up Skyhill. Obverse: All the 1976 coins show the first profile portrait of the Queen as used on the first Manx decimal coins of 1971. The bust was sculptured by Arnold Machin and, unlike later profiles of Her Majesty, it does not bear his initials. Details of the Island’s later decimal coins will be featured in future issues of Stamp and Coin News.
