for the Olympics Torch relay and the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen special events taking place in June. Celebrations started off in the rain for the arrival of HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. The Royal couple were treated to a demonstration cycling race by young Island cyclists at the National Sports Centre in Douglas before crossing to Peel on the west coast of the Island to meet with the lifeboat crew and a selection of Manx food producers. The Prince is well known for his interest in organic foods and he and Camilla spent a great deal of time sampling Manx cheeses, fish and other produce of the Island. On the first day of racing at the TT motorbike races the Olympic Torch landed at Ronaldsway Airport and the selected runners and riders began the relay for this historic occasion on the Isle of Man. Tom Black, a Post Office employee and Manx Cyclist, was chosen to carry the baton on his bike along Douglas promenade. There were crowds everywhere to see the baton being carried on all modes of local transport, including a horse tram, electric tram, motorcycle and lifeboat.
Whilst all this was in progress on the Island, Her Majesty the Queen was preparing for the wonderful Jubilee celebrations taking place in London and nationwide. The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant was a very special occasion for the people of the Isle of Man as we had representatives in the Viking boat and also the last remaining lifeboat of the Isle of Man steamer ‘Lady of Mann’ which served in WW2. The Viking boat had a three hour row before they got to their start line but they still had enough energy to complete the course and proudly fly the Manx flag. The lifeboat didn’t fare as well as it began to take on water and had to be rescued by the lifeboat. The stories of the Pageant are the stuff legends are made of and the Vikings from Peel will certainly dine out on their experiences for a long time. Maxine Cannon, our Sales and Marketing Manager, was in London for all the celebrations and has been busy working on a celebratory folder which will contain wonderful memories of the four days in June 2012 when the people who turned out to celebrate made Her Majesty the Queen so proud of her glorious sixty years on the throne.
Remembering George Holland, Ramsey Philatelic Services It was with genuine sadness I heard that following a number of years of ill-health George or GBH as I frequently referred to him had passed away in Ramsey. George would ring me up numerous times each day to place orders, share an idea or more times than not tell me where we were going wrong with every aspect of the Philatelic Bureau. He was formidable and many a Post Office employeee past or present from Chief Executives, Board Members to postal officers experienced the GBH school of doing businessforthright is one way to describe it! He never bore a grudge, he said what he thought and moved on. Through it all though, George wanted the very best for his customers, everything had to be spot on and delivered yesterday, one of his favourite sayings was “we couldnt sell snow to Eskimos.” He was our sounding board on many occasions and was always ready to give his honest opinion based on what was best for the collector of Isle
of Man stamps. Another of his stock phrases was “the Collector needs to be complete and know he has everything, if not he will close his account”, again a very true statement. (George sold his business to his long time friend Mike Southall) George also had a wicked sense of humour which brought light relief to every phone call. There were times when I thought “oh no not GBH, what does he want this time” but now when I think I'll ring him to run past an idea and he isn’t there, I feel the terrible void he has left in the world of Philately. There will never be another personality like him. Our deepest sympathies are extended to his wife Esther and family.

The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this miniature sheet in celebration of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. It was the highlight of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, bringing the Thames alive as it resounded with clanging bells, tooting horns and piercing whistles and recalling both its royal heritage and its heyday as a working river. When the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant took place on the afternoon of Sunday June 3, 2012 – just six weeks before the London Olympic Games - it showcased one of the largest flotillas ever assembled on the Thames and the largest collection of historic vessels. Crowds of Londoners and tourists lined the route to catch a glimpse of the Queen, who herself had already launched 25 ships, and to wave at boats such as the Amazon, which took part in Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations a century ago. Memorable attractions included the Boadicea, an oyster smack, which is the oldest sailing boat still afloat in Europe, and Gloriana the royal rowbarge, an 88-foot gilded barge, resembling a Viking vessel and rowed by 18 oarsmen. More than 1,000 vessels, including Dunkirk little ships, dragon boats, narrowboats, steamboats and tugs, rowing boats, kayaks and canoes from all corners of the Commonwealth, festooned with garlands, streamers and Union Flags, motored, sailed or floated along the seven-mile route from Putney to Tower Bridge. There was even a replica of a Viking longboat. The procession went under a total of 14 bridges and was led by a floating belfry with eight new church bells, commissioned by the church of St James at Garlickhythe and cast at the Whitechapel foundry. They were echoed by the peals of the bells of riverbank churches along the route. It was divided into ten sections with music herald barges separating each one, playing a range of tunes from traditional and classical music to more contemporary pieces, including works commissioned especially for the occasion. At its centre was the royal barge, The Spirit of Chartwell, decorated in red and gold, and carrying the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, who is now Lord High Admiral in the Royal Navy. The armed forces, fire, police and rescue services were represented and passenger boats, carrying up to 30,000 flagwaving members of the public took part in the floating celebration of the Queen’s 60 years on the throne. The bascules of Tower Bridge were raised in salute and, downriver of London Bridge, there was a gun salute as the flotilla passed through a spectacular ‘avenue of sails’ formed by traditional Thames sailing boats, oyster smacks, square riggers and naval vessels with sails too high to pass under London Bridge. There was a rare opportunity to see a replica of The Golden Hinde, in which Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the globe in 1577. The flotilla travelled at a speed of 4 knots with the ebbing tide increasing its speed over ground to 6 knots. The oldest boat taking part was built in 1740, while the largest boat was 65 metres long and 42 metres high. Each participating boat was provided with a specially designed Diamond Jubilee ensign as a lasting souvenir. The pageant is the latest in a long line of royal celebrations on the Thames amongst which was Queen Anne Boleyn’s Coronation in 1533; an extravagant pageant for King Charles II and Queen Catherine of Braganza in 1662 and a flamboyant musical event held in 1717 by King George I. In 1977 the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh celebrated their Silver Jubilee with a River Progress from Greenwich to Lambeth. They watched from County Hall as 140 vessels took part in a river pageant. Now, 25 years later, they were back on the Thames again.

NEW RELEASE • Issue Date – 19.06.12
The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to commemorate the sporting achievements of Mark Cavendish MBE the Island’s most successful sportsman The year 2011 was remarkable for ‘Cav’, even by his high standards, as he won the Tour de France Green Jersey and World Road Race Championship, was awarded an MBE and was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He will win many more races and receive many more honours, but this is a perfect moment to celebrate his achievements so far with this Isle of Man Post Office stamp issue. The first of the seven stamps, 38p value, shows his victory in the 2006 Commonwealth Games Scratch Race - one of the greatest achievements in the Isle of Man’s proud sporting history. Mark is only the second Manx cyclist to win Commonwealth gold - Peter Buckley won the road race in 1966. A few months after the Games, Mark turned professional and the 41p value stamp shows him winning his first ‘pro’ race, the 2007 Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen. In 2008 Mark stunned the cycling world by winning stages of the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France. He had proved that he was the fastest sprinter in the world, but as the 2009 season began he had still to win one of cycling’s ‘monuments’ - the most prestigious single day classic races. The 65p stamp shows Mark winning the 2009 Milan - San Remo classic in which he snatched victory from Heinrich Haussler right on the line. The Tour de France is the most gruelling endurance event in sport, and for a sprinter the greatest prize is the Tour’s Green Jersey. Mark had come close to winning it before he finally achieved his lifelong ambition to wear it on the Champs Elysees in the 2011 Tour de France. It was confirmation that he was the best sprinter in the world - and potentially of all time. Mark is featured doing a lap of honour after the final stage of the Tour de France on the 71p stamp.
Mark achieved one of the highlights of his career to date winning the 2011 World Road Race Championships in Copenhagen, illustrated on the 80p value. With this historic victory came the coveted road race ‘Rainbow Jersey’ that he will wear for the whole of the 2012 season, as he appears on the £1.05 stamp. Before Mark won in Copenhagen in 2011 only one other Briton had won the men’s title as a professional - Tom Simpson in 1965. To date, this is Mark’s greatest achievement. At the end of 2011 Mark signed for Team Sky, and the £1.16 stamp - the final value in this collection - shows him riding for his new team wearing the ‘Rainbow Jersey’ as the reigning road race World Champion. Apart from at the Olympic Games when he will wear Team GB colours, Mark will wear the World Champion’s jersey throughout this season. It is a great honour, but one which also carries with it a duty to race with the pride and passion of the legendary riders who have preceded him in wearing the coveted rainbow bands. There was never any doubt that Mark would fulfil this duty, and he began the 2012 season in a manner befitting his status as World Champion by winning two stages of the Tour of Qatar. He then won the Belgian semi classic Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne with his trademark sprint finish and followed this with a stage win in Italy at the TirrenoAdriatico. It was the perfect start to a season which will see Mark attempt to win the Tour de France Green Jersey again, and gold for Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Mark has already produced many outstanding performances, but perhaps the most remarkable aspect of his career is that his greatest achievements may still be ahead of him.

NEW RELEASE • Issue Date – 08.08.12
The Isle of Man Post Office is pleased to present this beautiful stamp issue on honey-scented paper dedicated to one of our most popular and beloved insects and recognising its crucial role in the life cycle of the natural world.
The Bee Fauna of the Isle of Man Steve Crellin writes... Apart from the honeybee, the Island is home to approximately 15 species of bumblebees and 57 species of solitary bees. To put this in perspective, currently 24 species of bumblebees and over 200 solitary bee species are recorded from the British Isles. On the Island these bees can be found foraging from flowers on our mountain moorlands where the lovely Bilberry Bumblebee (Bombus monticola), amongst several other species, visit bilberry and heather flowers, right down to the Island’s coastal fringes where a number of bees make a living, for example on the Ayres and the soft cliffs of Ramsey Bay. Most of us will be familiar with some of the various bumblebees that visit our garden flowers, but the solitary bees will be less familiar and it may be only when they are nesting in our lawns or flower beds that we notice them. They are called solitary bees because, unlike the honey and bumble bees, there is no worker caste and they do not live in colonies although they can form large nesting aggregations such as those of Colletes succinctus. Other solitary bees, known as cuckoo bees, forgo building and provisioning their own nests but sneak their eggs into the nests of other bees where they develop after eliminating their competition for the nest’s provisions. The silver and white Epeolus variegatus is one such cuckoo bee which can be found on the Ayres where it takes advantage of the efforts of bees such as species of the genus Colletes.
A Short History Harry Owens writes…The written history of bees in the Island goes back to well before 1550 AD when 11 bee boles were built at a farm called Ballachurry in the south. Here also is the last remaining bee-house used for wintering skep bees, which consists of a window-less small roofed building about four metres square, inside of which are built-in recesses to accommodate various sized skeps. There also remains about six
or more bee bole sites in other locations on the Island. In addition, before the reformation, we had a large monastery located at Ballasalla called Rushen Abbey and situated in the best farming area of the southeast; the monks must have kept bees. I would theorise that a land bridge could have stretched from what is now Cumbria or Galloway in southern Scotland; as the depth of the sea in that area is reasonably shallow, and going westwards to Northern Ireland likewise, thus depth is shallow enough to regard the possibility of such a bridge. Food for thought! On the Isle of Man we have in the region of 120 beekeepers with varying numbers of colonies, 100 of them are fully paid-up members of the IOM Beekeepers Federation affiliated to the BBKA, comprising of three districts. I would estimate that there are at least 400 colonies kept by these beekeepers.
The Status of our Native Bee Population We had a Bee Disease Act 1987 that not only set out the control of Foulbrood but also completely banned the import of any type of live bees into the Island. We are varroa mite and Foulbrood disease free. Unfortunately, the Isle of Man is an associate member of the European Community and has to follow certain protocols; these protocols allow free movement of most livestock and food between member states and this puts our bees at great risk.
Harry Owens... Harry Owens is a Manxman by birth and has been, for the last 30 years, the Adviser and Bee Disease Officer to the Isle of Man Government’s Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture. He is also the current Treasurer of the IOM Beekeepers Federation and Chairman of the Western District Beekeepers Association. Harry has been a member of both the Bee Improvement and Conservation Association and the British Beekeepers Association since 1968.

Isle of Man Treasury Coins Cooinaghyn Tashtey Vannin We continue our history of Manx Coinage with New Manx Decimal Coins introduced in 1981-86 M. J. Southall, MBE, MCGI In 1981 the world’s first £5 coin minted for general circulation was issued by the Isle of Man. The design was of a triskelion on an outline map of the Island and was identical to that on the first thin £1 coins nicknamed “Percy’s”, after the Manx Treasury Minister, Percy Radcliffe, who introduced them in 1978. These £5 coins were produced by the Pobjoy Mint in Sutton, Surrey. They were 36mm in diameter and made of ‘Virenium’, an alloy of copper, tin and zinc. In 1981 a total of 22,414 Virenium coins were minted and just over a 1,000 in 1982 and nearly 1,500 in 1983. Five pound coins with a superior finish were also minted in small quantities for collectors as well as coins produced in Sterling Silver, Gold and Platinum. The 20p coin first went into circulation in 1982. Again, the Isle of Man beat the rest of the world’s sterling area (but only just!) to introduce a coin of this value. The coins depict Viking arms and armour of the 9th to 13th centuries, including a winged helmet, a breastplate, broadswords, spears, battleaxes and daggers. There is also shown a Norse ‘targe’ or shield bearing a ‘lymphard’ or Viking galley emblem with Viking ornamentation. When introduced, the coin also had a nickname of the ‘scorer’. This rather complicated design lasted just two years before being replaced by the ‘three herrings’ design in 1984. A total of 824,892 cupro-nickel 20p coins were minted in 1982 and 115,610 in 1983. Mention has already been made of the £1 thin ‘Percy’s’ introduced in 1978. In 1983 the UK first introduced a £1 coin. Its diameter was the same as that of the Manx £1 coin but it was almost twice as thick. For compatibility, a thick Manx £1 coin was also put into circulation in 1983.
It was the first in a series of four coins to show the Arms of the towns in the Isle of Man. The 1983 coins depict the Peel Town Arms; a horizontal garter showing Peel Castle and Cathedral ruins with fishing boats in the foreground and surrounded by the wording PEEL · TOWN · COMMISSIONERS, above the date 1983. All four coins in this Town Arms series were minted in Virenium.
The 1984 coin bears the Castletown Town Arms: A stylised representation of Castle Rushen above waves of the sea and surmounted by a crown within a shield. To the left of the crown is a triskeles and to the right a deer’s head. Within the scroll is the Manx word SHICKRYS meaning ‘steadfast’. Above the shield is the word CASTLETOWN. The 1985 Ramsey Town Arms: The Town Arms shows a bird perched on the Albert Tower in front of the sun’s rays with a crowned scroll above. A swan faces inwards either side of a triskeles in a shield. The whole contained in an ornate shield and surmounted by the word RAMSEY. The 1986 Douglas Town Arms: The intricate coat of arms has a crowned helmeted crest. The shield is quartered and shows a Viking ship with sails furled, an eagle and child with the cap of maintenance, a lion rampant and a triskeles going anti-sunwise. The upper scroll has the wording BOROUGH OF DOUGLAS and the lower one is entirely in Manx. The coat of arms is surmounted by the wording DOUGLAS. Obverse: All the 1981-86 coins show the first profile portrait of Her Majesty by Arnold Machin, as used on the first Manx decimal coins of 1971.

Celebrate A Real Winner... Isle of Man Stamps & Coins is pleased to present a most prestigious stamp issue, inspired by the London 2012 Olympic Games. Designed by internationally renowned British designer Sir Paul Smith, this very special set of stamps went on sale at 00.01 a.m. on January 1st 2012 at the Island’s main Post Office in Douglas – a ‘world first’, that has proved extremely popular worldwide. We are hugely honoured and thrilled that Sir Paul Smith agreed to design our Olympic collection. He aspired to design a truly positive and colourful collection with a strong graphic style of design – something we certainly feel he has achieved with this iconic set, we hope you will agree. Sir Paul Smith’s introduction into fashion was accidental. His ambition was to become a professional racing cyclist until aged seventeen years he was involved in a road accident. Three months in hospital followed and when he came out he knew he wanted to do something creative. With the encouragement from his girlfriend Pauline Denyer (now wife), and a small amount of savings, he opened a tiny shop in Nottingham in 1970. He started to take evening classes, studying tailoring and by 1976 Paul had shown his first menswear collection in Paris. Today there are fourteen collections including ready-to-wear for men and women, accessories, shoes and junior. Paul Smith has seventeen shops in the UK and sells to sixty six countries in the rest of the world with shops in Paris, Milan, New York, Hong Kong, Korea, Kuwait, U.A.E. and Japan. Paul continues to be an integral part of the company; he is both designer and chairman and is continually involved in every aspect of the business.

FUTURE ISSUES The Centenary of the Royal Flying Corps - Issue Date 20.09.12 We commemorate this landmark occasion with a set of six stamps featuring the wonderfully-detailed illustrations of aeronautic artist Arvo Vercamer. The Corps was formed by a Royal Warrant in April 1912 and began as a collection of disparate groups until it became the unified fighting force that numbered 27 squadrons with over 420 aircraft plus a further 216 in depots and training at the time of the Battle of the Somme in 1916. We tell the story of the formation and success of the Corps and pinpoint the significant aircraft that were so vital in its development.
The Centenary of Scott’s South Pole Expedition - Issue Date 02.10.12 Our miniature sheet commemorates the centenary of Scott’s heroic expedition to the South Pole. We are grateful for the uniquely-qualified contribution of Sir Ranulph Fiennes and to the Scott Polar Research Institute for permission to feature the extraordinary photographs of Herbert Ponting which, in Sir Ranulph’s words, powerfully serve ‘to remind us all of the stark reality of the conditions faced by Scott and his men, the very first human beings to penetrate and learn about Antarctica.’
Christmas Scenes – A Time Gone By - Issue Date 20.10.12 Ramsey-born artist and ex-IOM Post Office employee Michael Starkey says of his work featured on our six-stamp set: ‘In my paintings I try to capture a moment of time. I work from faded black and white photographs of old buildings and streets that no longer exist and then bring them back in colour with memories and research. I hope the paintings will stimulate conversations about people and places. These Christmas paintings are based on this principle. I have an image in my mind of that feeling just before the light fades in the winter and the lights in houses start to flicker on and Christmas lights glow in the gloom. At this darkest time of the year this brings hope and comfort to all.’ As our Christmas postal issue, the IOM and UK values of this colourful set are also available in self-adhesive form.
