Another slap in the face to Singapore this month, with Kanye West making a surprise guest appearance at the wedding of the grandson of Kazakhstan’s President and Repressor-inChief Nursultan Nazarbayev. Elsewhere, Dennis Rodman was back in North Korea to hang with his “pal” Kim Jong-Un, a.k.a. the guy who had his ex-girlfriend executed by firing squad in August. This isn’t the first time we’ve lost out in the superstar celebrity visit stakes. Back in 2011, Beyonce, Mariah Carey and Usher performed in Libya for Mad Dog Gaddafi; and Jennifer Lopez has carved out a successful second career singing sweet nothings to monsters like Chechen dictator Ramzan Kadyrov and, as recently as July, Turkmen overlord Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov (a.k.a. Gurby from the Block). As F1 rolls around once again we’re not short of celebrity visitors here ourselves—but the rest of the year? Forget about it. (And no, K Pop “stars” don’t count.) You know what’s wrong, don’t you? We’ve lost our edge. Gotten soft and lost our nasty, bitter repressive edge. Celebs these days aren’t impressed by bans on chewing gum and jaywalking—they need to see some real evil being enacted before they come running. If we really want the big names in town on a regular basis, we’re going to have to get tough: Sentence taxi drivers who don’t stop for passengers despite having a green light to immediate and painful death. Ship anyone who blocks the way up an escalator off to five years of forced labor in the Jurong Rock Caverns. Make stupid haircuts punishable by permanent banishment. Chop the hands off anyone who tries to put five or more fruits in a cocktail. We used to be good at this, folks! Remember when William Gibson described Singapore as Disneyland with the Death Penalty? Now that’s a tagline to drive visitor numbers! None of this airy-fairy, touch-feely ‘something for everyone’ nonsense of nowadays. Theme park rides and the gallows—it’s just what the modern-day A-lister expects from his vacation.

Tay Wei Kiat is the founder of Oompr! (www.oompr.com) a web-based marketplace, which allows folks to sell anything from clothes to tech gadgets, to online “friends” at sharp discounts.

– local director Anthony Chen, winner of the Camera d’Or at Cannes Film Festival 2013, at a Singapore Film Society post-screening Q&A session.

The Bookie OB Index Charting the ups and downs of Singapore's openness, tolerance and freedom of expression.

How did you come up with the idea for Oompr!? Previously, I worked on BookINBookOUT, an online textbook marketplace for tertiary students. I realized that users enjoy knowing to whom they are buying and selling textbooks. Oompr! is a new marketplace that fully explores how social networks can benefit these buyers and sellers. What lessons have you learnt from your startup ventures? There’s no point in protecting your startup idea too fiercely. Ideas can be easily copied and someone else may come up with the same idea independently. Execution and building a community who are loyal to your product should be the main focus. Also, sales and marketing is important. Users hate speaking to robots. Show them that they can reach out to the living person behind the product. How many different ideas do you have milling around your head at any given time? Two to three: at various different stages of development. But the number isn’t important. What makes or breaks a business idea is how thoroughly you explore it, how deeply you believe in it, and how well you can execute it. What do you think of the start up scene in Singapore? It is very encouraging to see all the startups sprouting up here every week. But the odds are not always in our favor. In Singapore, we have access to a much smaller market compared to our regional counterparts, there’s a lack of early stage angel investors, and an expensive operating environment. Where do you see the business in 10 years? Oompr! will revolutionize the ecommerce scene in the region. It’s Ebay 3.0. Chin Hui Wen

Comedy Scene It seems Singapore’s local comedy scene is gaining momentum. Stand Up For Singapore (28 Sep, DBS Arts Centre, 20 Merbau Rd.,6733-8166. Log on to www. thecomedyclub.asia for more info), a standup comedy competition by The Comedy Club Asia pits aspiring comedians against each other in a series of rounds at BluJaz—our best bet to find the next Kumar or Hossan Leong. That’s in addition to sessions such as Home Club’s Comedy Masala (www.homeclub.com.sg), Talk Cock Comedy and Fight Comic at Blujaz (www.blujaz.net) which provide regular opportunities for local acts to make a name for themselves.

Despite the controversy over the sudden introduction of new MDA licensing requirements for online news sites in June, new and independent commentary websites such as Mothership (www.mothership.sg), The Independent (www. theindependent.sg) and The Breakfast Network (www.breakfastnetwork.sg) are flourishing, giving the mainstream press a run for their money. From interesting bite-sized opinions to full-fledged candid commentaries coming from non-partisan volunteer writers, they’re certainly a fresh and long overdue departure from mainstream media.

Be Good Spare Change If you can afford that expensive Birkin bag, a few cents for charity won’t hurt, will it? That’s the creative idea behind One Cent Movement. They’ve just launched a Google Chrome plugin that rounds up your online transaction to the nearest dollar, while giving you the option to donate the difference to charity. Users will receive an email prompting them to give back to any charity organization of their choice as listed in the SG Gives portal. Find out more at www.onecentmovement.sg.

Ah Sam Cold Drink Stall

The buzz: Just when you thought the whole speakeasy trend had died, Jigger & Pony barkeep Sam Wong opens a spanking new cocktail joint just next to the Spiffy Dapper, in a cozy space once occupied by café Homebodies. The décor: Simple IKEA-style furniture and mismatched couches lend a house party feel to the place. Little touches like old school “Gold Cock Brand” glasses add to the retro-local aesthetics suggested by its name, though fortunately nothing gets too heavy-handed. The drinks: There’s no menu, so just go up to the bar and tell them what you feel like having; prices range from $10 for selected neat drinks to $30 for truly fancy cocktails. We went for classics—an old

fashioned and mint julep ($18 each)—and they were wellexecuted, tasty and strong. The food: Complimentary prawn crackers (you’re not really here to eat anyway). The music: None. All you hear is chatter. The crowd: Mostly Sam’s fans, who followed him here from Jigger & Pony. We hear some of the local bartending crowd hang out here, too, even occasionally getting behind the bar to strut their stuff. Why you’ll be back: It’s the latest hush-hush drinking hole in town for insiders only. Plus, sipping on one of Sam’s concoctions while looking out at the craziness of Boat Quay below feels pretty cool, in an eye-of-the-storm way.

All you need to know about this year’s F1—from A to Z. By the I-S Team

Art Perhaps surprisingly for an event dominated by loud noise and macho moves, this is a great time of year for art, with some exciting exhibitions taking place throughout September. Among the most relevant (since it was specially curated for the race), popular British artist Paul Oz (Sep 19-Oct 20) presents his signature large scale “explosive” paintings for his self-titled solo show at Icon Gallery (476 River Valley Rd., 6735-4550, www.icongallery.sg. Free). Meanwhile, art enclave Gillman Barracks (9 Lock Rd., www.facebook/gillmanbarracks) is celebrating its First Anniversary through Sep 28–with late-night openings and an array of free performances from the likes of avantgarde collective Strangeweather Movement Group. See page 13 for more details. A is also for apps, and there are two official ones this year: the SingTel Pitstop Mobile App (which lets you share pictures of the race in a fan gallery) and the Singapore GP Mobile App. Frankly though, you only really need the I-S App, available for both your Android phone and your iPad (www.is-magazine. com/app). This issue’s in there, alongside all the other F1 round-ups you read about below.

Dining deals As is now standard for F1 weekend, tons of restuarants are going all out with special menus and promos. The big one this year is undoubtedly over at Pan Pacific (right in the heart of the action, no less) where daytime pop-up brunch party Bacchanalia Brunch: GPSS Edition is taking place (Sep 21, 1pm. Pacific Ballroom, Pan Pacific Singapore, 7 Raffles Blvd., 6336-8111, www. panpacific.com. $100-10,000 (package for 20 inclusive of buffet brunch and drinks). appearances It’s one of the hottest topics of gossip over race weekend: who’s been spotted where and when. “We do not usually know which celebrities will attend until they show up,” says Podium Lounge’s organizer Robbie Hoyes-Cock. “But rest

assured that the majority of F1 team, drivers and team-owners will turn up at the Podium Lounge as they stay at The Ritz-Carlton due to its proximity to the Paddock Club.” Over at 1 World Music Festival, there will also be special appearances by non-performing A-listers. “We have tables reserved for the usual slew of celebrity guests who will be making appearances at the Aire Lounge area,” says organizer Gregory Gumo. “It’s a pop-up club on festival grounds where guests can rub shoulders with the performers as well as the rest of the big names coming to town.” See Parties for more info.

Free Rides Just in case you didn’t know, rides on the Singapore Flyer (30 Raffles Ave., 6333-3311, www.singaporeflyer.com) are free for all ticket holders. Suffice to say, the view will be stunning.

Grand Theft

Auto V

It’s the gaming event of the year and probably the closest most of us are going to get to racing recklessly around a city. (The provocative ad they took out on our cover last week gives you a pretty good idea of what’s in store…) It’s been five years since the last one, so expect queues out the door when the latest instalment of one of the most popular (and notorious) video games of all-time launches on September 17. It’s available for both Xbox 360 and PS3, priced at $79.90-189.90 from Comics Connection (#06-04 Plaza Singapura, 68 Orchard Rd., 6337-8300). Find out more at www. rockstargames.com/grandtheftauto/.

Headline acts

This year’s headliners at the 2013 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix Concerts might just be the best yet. As well as The Killers (see right), you’ve got Rihanna (Sunday Sep 22, 10:30pm, Zone 4), Justin Bieber (Monday Sep 23, 8:15pm, Zone 4) and Big Bang (Friday Sep 20, 11:15pm, Zone 4)—hey, even they’re not your thing, there’s no denying they’re huge. Plus familiar old names like Tom Jones (Sunday Sep 22, 6:45pm, Zone 1) and, ahem, Bob Owl City Geldof (Sep 21, 8pm, Zone 1, why he’s playing on the Saturday and not the Monday so he can sing about it, is beyond us); alongside smaller but no-less-interesting names like Laura Mvula (Friday Sep 20, 8:30pm, Zone 4) and Owl City (Monday Sep 23, 6:15pm, Zone 4). “Each year we try to curate a broad span of music and entertainment to cross as many age groups and genres as possible,” says organizer Michael Roche of Midas Promotions. “Killers is our rock act, Rihanna our diva female pop act, and Justin Bieber and Owl City for the younger market. A huge amount of work has gone into securing this line up and the production is going to be stunning on the massive Padang main stage.”

The Killers

Iggy Azalea Move over Nicki Minaj. Iggy Azalea is the new It girl in hip hop, and this blonde model from Down Under (yes, really) with the filthy mouth is one of our top picks at the 1 World Music Festival. Read our exclusive one-on-one with the starlet at is.gd/iggyazalea. Iggy Azelea performs Sep 20. Main Stage, Marina Barrage, 8 Marina Gardens Dr., 6514-5959, www.1worldmusicfestival. com. $98-188 from the site.

Jetting away After five years of F1 it’s possible you’ve just had enough. If that’s the case, then why not use the weekend to get away? Affordable return flights (going out Friday, back Sunday) are still available to Hong Kong ($288 upwards with Tigerair), Bali ($204 upwards with AirAsia) and Bangkok ($304 upwards with Jetstar). COVER STORY Unwinding

VIP guestlists

All that action taking its toll on you? There are a few special ways to unwind. From Sep 19-22, head to nearby The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands (2 Bayfront Ave., 6688-8868, www. marinabaysands.com) to do some late-night shopping and indulge in special dining privileges (look out for exclusive chef appearances) (see is.gd/ f1diningdeals). Following that, tee-off at the Marina Bay Golf Course (80 Rhu Cross, 6342-5730, www.mbgc. com.sg) during its Weekend Night Golf Special from Sep 21-22, with the course open from 4:30pm till very late. And then chill out at Bar Stories (55/57A Haji Lane, 6298-0838, www.facebook. com/barstpries.sg) at their Off Your Tracks nights (Sep 20-21, 7-11pm), where there will be Spin the Rave Wheel games and trivia alongside bespoke race-inspired cocktails.

Getting on a guestlist is easier said than done, though if you’re “in the company of a celebrity, F1 Driver or team owner, royalty, supermodel or an ambassador of some sorts, you might just get in,” says Robbie Hoyes-Cock, organizer of Podium Lounge. Our advice: make lots of friends at the race track, especially anyone who could pass for a model. You never know.

Plan your exit strategy carefully (crowds start building at the exits nearly half an hour before the end of the race) or else you’ll be stuck there till late. And then treat yourself to a foot massage the next day. One of our all-time favorites is Orchard Way Beauty Shop in the seedy environs of Orchard Towers (#04-03, 400 Orchard Rd., 67371758). Ask for Sam—the man is a magician and only charges $38/hour.

Getting around town over race weekend can be a real pain. Don’t forget there are six different stations serving the various circuit zones.

Up In Arms Gillman Barracks’ first anniversary is not just a celebration. Terry Ong finds an enclave keen to keep growing, and picks five of his favorite shows.

T

his month, Gillman Barracks celebrates its first anniversary with extended opening hours (until 9pm every Friday), weekend art tours (organized by Art Outreach every Saturday, 11am and 4pm) and noteworthy new exhibitions by both local and international artists (of which we’ve picked five of our favorites below). One year on from launch and Gillman has welcomed 15 galleries into its fold, played host to more than 90 exhibitions and hosted more than a few fun events (including our very own ArtWalk in August, the pictures from which you can see above). The area is not yet drawing regular crowds and it remains to be seen whether all the galleries can stick it out until those crowds start coming, but with a new push from the Economic Development Board (see our interview with their Programme Director, right) and some big new names incoming, the stage is set for an exciting few months.

Ai Weiwei – Baby Formula

The controversial Chinese artist’s solo show here is a biting installation piece on corruption and mortality.

Audrey Yeo

“We need to have more estate-wide events such as festivals. Gillman Barracks is primarily an arts and cultural enclave, however we do need to cultivate the estate as a lifestyle destination and to attract the office crowds in the vicinity.”

“With the Arnoldii Arts Club, pop-up events and F&B that are coming soon, we are looking forward to building and extending our current local and international art community into something really vibrant and exciting.”

Director, Yeo Workshop (#01-01, 1 Lock Rd., 6658-8990)

What’s new and upcoming at Gillman? Just opened is Yeo Workshop by Audrey Yeo who studied in Columbia as well as Sotheby’s Institute. With her extensive contacts and expertise, the gallery will play a developmental role to grow the local art cycle’s system and industry. I am also looking forward to the Centre for Contemporary Art which will open in October. This special project by the Nanyang Technological University will hold various residency programs with nine studio spaces for artists to produce new works. Then there is Pearl Lam opening in November, which will be concentrating on Chinese art are informed by Western art forms. Are you making any changes based on the last year? Based on the feedback that we’ve received from visitors, one of the main issues is connectivity throughout the belt. Right now, discussions are ongoing to fill the existing spaces. So once that is sorted, walking through Gillman Barracks will feel less of a stretch. We also want to keep the nature element here, which is why we’d rather not have too many walkways connecting the different blocks, but we have just created new sign postings so that new visitors will have a better sense of where the galleries are located. There might also be more F&B outlets here in the near future.

books City, Slicker We wouldn’t ordinarily recommend a rival city guide, but since this one has been put together by much-missed former I-S staffer Jalean Wong we can’t pretend it’s not awesome. the Hunt Guide: Singapore is now into its 2nd edition, resized and revamped with a modern-chic look. The latest edition also boasts more cultural feature stories and round-ups of the best hotels, hawker centers and the like. There’s also a handy “48 Hours in Singapore” portion for those looking to fill up their weekend itinerary (or entertain guests from out of town). $20 from all major bookstores and selected lifestyle stores including BooksActually (9 Yong Siak St., 6222-9195, www.booksactually.com)

Sleek and minimalist, the cool Bluetooth-enabled sound bar connects to just about any mobile device— your smartphone, ultrabook or tablet—and converts your phone into a remote control through a dedicated app. Sound-wise, the 40W 3-way 2.1 channel speaker system promises lush, rich playback. $349 from Audio House, #04-01/15 Liang Court Shopping Centre, 177 River Valley Rd., 6336-7177, www.audiohouse.com.sg.

Inspiral Carpet The new way to display art? Away from the wall and on to the floor. Our favorite street artist Steve Lawler (aka Mojoko) has come up with an eyepopping 200cm by 170cm handwoven wool carpet called the redrug, inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic The Shining, Lawler’s favorite film of all time. Produced in a limited edition of 50 in collaboration with creative project Alamak Projects (a joint effort of creative agency Art & Industry and artist Yoichi Nakamuta), this intriguing, mind-bending and blood-red work will add drama to any living space. $650, from www.kult.com.sg.

Fred Perry Laurel Wreath Collection Shop the buzz: Brit label Fred Perry has brought back its Laurel Wreath Collection Shop to Mandarin Gallery (after its exit from Ann Siang Road) stocking its namesake premium line plus coveted pieces from collaborative projects. the vibe: The cool folks at Asylum gave the boutique the raw, industrial look—the done-to-death combo of concrete floors, rough-hewn wood, exposed ceiling and

black steel frames—but managed to add heaps of Fred Perry character by styling the space with a smorgasbord of vinyls decked on the walls like a hip indie record store. the goods: Currently on the racks are the Autumn/Winter 2013 Laurel Wreath collections (the Brit brand’s premium and signature range, not to be confused with its regular Authentic line), including

apparels, accessories and shoes, for both men ($159 upwards) and women ($109 upwards). But we’re putting our money on the cult-status collaborative pieces with fellow Brit designer Christopher Raeburn and Raf Simons ($239 upwards). Why you’ll be back: Everything here is exclusive to the store, which means you won’t find them stocked in the other two FP outlets at ION Orchard and Cineleisure.

Pilates as physiotherapy— how does it work? The primary purpose of Pilates in healing is to provide a more stable inner core for the spine and limbs, permitting safer, better function and facilitating a return to physical activity. What are some Pilates‑related exercises readers can do in the office on the days they can’t make a class? The Standing Hip Extension—an Xtend Barre exercise—is great for strengthening your glutes. Stand at the desk with your feet hipdistance apart. Check that your ears, shoulders, hips and ankles are in alignment. Using your desk or chair as support, extend your right heel behind while keeping your back straight. Engage your glutes—lift and lower on eight counts. Repeat on the other side. Do four sets of this. Any Given Sunday Ten new brunches to get you up early on weekends. By Chin Hui Wen

runch is both a great hangover cure and the perfect cover for daytime drinking. The only problem is that it’s often unimaginative and boring. Who really needs another from-concentrate mimosa or 30-buck eggs and toast? Thankfully, brunch has started to take off at non-traditional hangouts: Spanish tapas joints, Peranakan restaurants and Latin hotspots. Here are ten of our favorites.

In an airy light filled dining room, swig PiperHeidsieck Champagne while digging into everything from moreish mushroom risotto to fiery Thai salads. Servers come round with hot pizza too, at 30-minute intervals. It’s all surprisingly affordable: $68 or $98 (with freeflow Champagne and wine).

The freshly minted Argentinean establishment has just launched new brunch recipes like braised ossobuco on toast ($24) and chorizo grilled tomato omelet ($23).

Stellar churros ($12) as well as savories like chuletillas y huevos ($28), pan-fried baby lamb cutlets with two eggs, pair well with their cava mimosas ($12/glass, $42/jug).

Sabio tapas bar & Restaurant An awesome deal at $49.90 for an a la carte buffet of cold—try the creamy St. Helens oysters—and hot tapas (the spicy panfried calamari is killer), this meal’s been christened the “Hangover Brunch”. The feast comes with freeflow cava as well as red and white sangria. 5 Duxton Hill, 66907562, www.sabio. sg. Available Sun 11:30am-3:30pm.

fRENCH taratata bistrot

Tanjong Pagar is pretty quiet over the weekend, so the brunch vibe at this charming Parisian-style bistro is real laidback. Chef-owners Bertrand Raguin and Philippe Nouzillat put out a menu of French crepes—with fillings like ham, egg and cheese ($11)—plus, eggy classics such as oeuf cocotte ($12). 35A Keong Saik Rd., 6221-4506, www. taratata.sg. the buzz: Noted Argentinean chef Diego Jacquet—whose London eateries Zoilo and Casa Malevo draw rave reviews—has teamed up with the Spa Esprit Group to launch this restaurant with plates sophisticated enough to dispel existing notions of Argentinean grub. “The biggest misconception is that we eat 400-500g-steaks at one go. That is so far from the truth,” says Jacquet. the vibe: The spacious 100-seater features a bold design with lots of dark wood and red metal accents. A lively open kitchen occupies one side of the space, while on the other side is a long bar: The ample counter seating creates a real convivial atmosphere.

the food: Creative recipes, which are perfect for sharing, from braised pig head croquettes with quince ($15) to grilled octopus and tuna mayo ($23). Plus, Latin takes on standards like the beef chimichurri burger ($28), which is spiffed up with spicy herby sauce and sharp cheese. the drinks: Latin inspired mixed drinks like the Spicy Lolita ($18), comprising Bochinche spiced vodka, Chambord and ginger beer, as well as classics such as the amaretto sour ($18). There’s also a wine menu, consisting of around 40 Argentinean labels. Why you’ll be back: Quality Argentinean fare is still a great novelty here and this restaurant provides a great atmosphere to sample some fine exotic cuisine.

Drink Celebrity in a Bottle These drinks may rely on flashy star power to grab your attention, but are also well worth drinking on their own terms.

2010 Grateful Dead Steal Your Face Red Wine Blend Part of Hard Rock Cafe’s exclusive Wines That Rock range (inspired by music legends), this peppery red pays tribute to American rock band Grateful Dead’s eclectic style, with an experimental mix of syrah, petite sirah, zinfandel and Grenache. Other wines in the series include 2010 Rolling Stones Forty Licks Merlot ($80), 2010 Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon Cabernet Sauvignon ($80) and 2011 Woodstock Chardonnay ($78). $80 at #02/03-01 HPL House, 50 Cuscaden Rd., 6235-5232, www.hardrock.com.

2012 Château Miraval Côtes de Provence Rosé The first vintage from Hollywood power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Provence estate Château Miraval, this salmon-colored blend of grenache, cinsault, syrah and rolle is pleasantly dry and mild. The actors paired up with Marc Perrin (owner of noted wine maker Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneufdu-Pape) to make the wine, and Oyster Bar managed to snag just 20 bottles of the much coveted vino. $160 at Oyster Bar, #01-01 Customs House, 70 Collyer Quay, 6534-5534, www.oysterbar.com.sg.

Chateau Miraval Rose Wine

Estrella Damm Inedit Well known Spanish chef Ferran Adrià (of the now-closed but ever influential molecular gastronomy temple El Bulli) teamed up with Catalonia’s largest brewery Damm to design this surprisingly easy-to-drink brew, with gentle fruit and coriander flavors, a light body and soft bubbles. $21 at The Providore, #05-03 Tan Boon Liat Building, 315 Outram Rd., 6221-7056, www.theprovidore.com. Sopra Cucina banquette seats, luxe marble finishings and a classy bar. The food: Sardinian specialities including hearty peasant-style zuppa gallurese ($26), bread soup with lamb stock and pecorino. For a good overview of what the cuisine has to offer, there’s a four-course degustation menu ($98).

The buzz: Tucked away at the back of five-star hotel Pan Pacific Orchard right by Orchard Towers, this 230-seat Sardinian restaurant more than makes up for its unusual location with its retro glam decor. The vibe: Pretty glitzy. You can tell they mean business. The restaurant’s name is in big lights out front, and the interior is dominated by plushy black leather

The drinks: A list of mostly Italian labels, including affordable housepour vinos (from $9.50/glass, $86/caraffe), plus beers from Italian microbrewery Beer 32 ($36) and modern cocktails such as the Amaro Smash ($14), comprising smashed pineapple and amaro montenegro. Why you’ll be back: For authentic Sardinian grub, this is the only place in town. Besides, there's a solid wine list and the service is no slouch. Take business associates here for a dinner that’s adventurous, but not too “out-there.”

RESTAURANT REVIEWS Shoebox Canteen HHHHH Western. 36 North Canal Rd., 9296-4836, www.facebook.com/ShoeboxCanteen. If the name hasn’t already given the game away, this eatery—co-located with bespoke cocktail bar Bitters & Love—is real cozy, seating only 30 diners, mainly along canteen-style communal tables. Those who don’t work around the CBD and can never make it down for their lunch service will be happy to note that they’ve recently started serving dinner, too. The compact, rotating menu features hearty standards such as their signature homemade beef burger ($19), which—though still relatively juicy—is a touch overdone and overwhelmed by a too-heavy egg bun. You’d do better to order the Weihenstephaner beerbattered snapper and chips ($18), which is technically faultless with a light crisp shell encasing some incredibly tender fish. We also like their more sophisticated off-the-menu specials, like the crisp-skinned duck confit ($24), which goes great with homey sides (from $5) including a bread basket and mash potatoes. With so many other dinner options in the area, it’s easy to pass on Shoebox Canteen’s prettied-up fast food items in favor of something more exotic (think Latin grub at SUR or Japanese robatayaki at Tamashii Robataya). But if you’ve got a hankering for a simple comforting lunch or crave a bite with your drinks (Bitters and Love’s bar snacks are quite insubstantial, even if delicious), this is just the ticket. Open Mon-Fri 11:45-2:30pm, 6-9pm. $

Food For Thought HHHHH Modern Singaporean. #01-04/05 National Museum of Singapore, 93 Stamford Rd., 6338-9887, www.foodforthought.com.sg. Folks have come to expect a certain standard of museum restaurants—they're no longer just utilitarian canteens. From fine-dining spot The Modern (three stars from The New York Times) at the MoMA in New York, to experimental restaurant Nomiya on the rooftop of contemporary art gallery Palais de Tokyo in Paris, museums have become destination dining venues. Even here in Singapore, museum eats are plenty appealing, with joints like respected Italian establishment Trattoria Lafiandra at the Singapore Art Museum. Socially-minded local restaurant chain Food for Thought has caught the museum bug too, offering their locally-inflected fare at exhibition spaces around town. Besides a pop-up burger shack at the Singapore Art Museum (open through the end of the month), they’ve launched this modern Singaporean cafe serving hawkerinspired plates at nearby National Museum. It’s a cute space, featuring retro marble laminate tables and kopitiam-style wall mosaics. The food’s simple, plentiful and good: Addictive brown buttered chye poh prawn salad—featuring all the flavors of chwee kueh—caveman-sized slabs of hoisin har cheong baby back ribs ($25) and plush baked Milo Godzilla pudding ($12), modelled after the rich coffee shop sip. Service isn’t perfect (they seem understaffed) and the monthly specials are disappointing. (The August mussel promo brought an especially puny portion of bivalves in insipid laksa broth.) So we wouldn’t go out of our way to eat here. But after working up an appetite wandering the museum halls, attending artsy talks or even partying at a Fort Canning concert (just behind the building), we’d be glad to return to this spot for quality comfort grub. Open Mon-Sat 10am-10pm; Sun 10am-9pm. $$

SCENESTEALER Weish Uber-talented local singer-songwriter Weish is set to entertain the crowd at this year’s F1 with her funky looper instrument, keyboard and voice. She tells us how she got started ahead of her upcoming gig. How did your journey begin? In terms of starting to make my own music and becoming active, it was only in mid-2012 when some friends bought me a looper for my birthday. that excited the hell out of me because it offered so many possibilities. but it wasn't till local band plainsunset found

an old cover I did of their song that I become visible at all; I was invited to play a show alongside local musician Jon Chan and was generously given my own set time, which I used to debut my looper stuff. the response was great, and things have miraculously picked up since. Where do you draw your musical inspirations from? musically, it's hard to say. I grew up on bach and the beatles, spent my teenage years with everything from eminem to Death Cab, Justin timberlake to Radiohead, Zero 7 to the

strokes. I also am tremendously inspired by various people that I've worked with in the local scene. We've got some really amazing musicians, poets, and playwrights. How do you feel being in an entertainment lineup with the likes of Rihanna? It feels pretty darn weird. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would happen. I’m way more stoked about the Killers though! but I doubt we’ll be on similar stages nor share holding rooms, or anything like that. so I’ll be spending all my off-stage time slinking around tents to stalk them down.

Weish performs on Sep 21-22 at various locations around Zone 1 and 4 of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. For tickets and more info on the entertainment lineup, log on to www.singaporegp.sg. KHAIRUL AmRI

Nightclubs today are… the same as they've always been. Modern music today is… too compressed and manicured. The last time I got drunk I… listened to the 40 part motet by tomas tallis while sitting round a camp fire watching a meteor shower. It was a real moment. Indonesia’s leading street artist is now one of the country’s most sought after, named by Art+Auction magazine recently in its list of “50 under 50 Most Collectible Artists”. His works are clever parodies of Indonesia’s socio-political issues, reminiscent of the UK’s Banksy, focusing mainly on the downfall of Suharto’s regime in the ‘90s and its repercussions. He waxes lyrical about today’s art world and his latest show We Are What We Mask, now showing at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute.

What's your pet peeve about art? the tricky art market and various gallery trappings. Who would you like to work with? everyone and everything. I am very flexible.

What is the current state of Indonesian contemporary art? the young have a lot to offer and it’s all very interesting because the art scene is continually evolving and keeping pace with the times and our political developments.

What can you tell us about your current show? I worked with a lot of different techniques and media like paper-making, sewing, sculpturing, printing, drawing and photographing. I carried out what I would call "small communication" about singapore's culture and society. It was very interesting for me as an observer because the issues that occur in singapore are similar to the situations in Indonesia. I hope that this little “research” I’ve conducted can be accepted by artgoers here.

We Are What We Mask is on through Oct 9. Singapore Tyler Print Institute, 41 Robertson Quay, 6336-3663, www.stpi.com.sg. Free. teRRY ONG

The décor: the vibe’s kitsch and playful; there are even old board games to play with. the gray plastic school desks and chairs here will prompt either a smile or a shudder from those who spent their formative years in singapore. Outside, vintage wooden and rattan furniture are perfect for alfresco lazing. The drinks: Craft beer is the main event here, and there are five varieties on tap, all by local brewery Archipelago ($7/glass or $12/ pint) plus bottled beers from all over the world (from $10), including the rather unusual jumbo 750ml bottles from Italian brewer Gjulia. You can even have your beer served with ice, kopitiam-style. probably one of the most boring and unoriginal thrillers we’ve seen in years, the purge makes you want to do exactly just that. A supposed morality piece about the state of violence in America, everything about this thriller rings false. From ethan Hawke’s semi-heroic turn as a steadfast family man who will do anything to protect his wife and kids to a truly ridiculous premise, the film is unredeemable. the year is 2022. America has never been in a better shape with unemployment rate at only one percent and violence is minimal. to keep everything in its place, the government has sanctioned an annual “purge” night where any form of crime and murder is legal. their point: Kill off the country’s non-contributors to the economy and the country will further prosper. the film’s main thread centers on security salesman James sandin (ethan Hawke) and his pretty, precious wife mary (Lena Heady), whom together with son Charlie (max burkholder) and daughter Zooey (Adelaide Kane), lead an idyllic suburban life. but all that is about to change when Charlie accidentally lets a homeless black man (edwin Hodge) into their house during a “purge” night. mistaken for protecting the helpless man, the sandins become the victims of the annual “purgers” as they threaten bloodbath and mayhem if the latter is not surrendered. Needless to say, James decides to take matter into his own hands and fight the morally corrupt. Unlike michael Haneke’s Funny Games which subverts violence, the purge only encourages it. the plot is so flawed from the get go that its snail-paced proceedings (shocking) make it extremely excruciating to watch. the most exciting bit is seeing Hawke wielding an axe but even then, that’s towards the film’s final 10 minutes. the rest of it? Killers in scary masks making threats and running around, mary and Zooey crying their eyes out and other predictable shenanigans. Oh, and did we mention that the acting’s terrible and the film borderline racist? You’re better off hiding at home. Terry Ong

the momentous debut feature film by our very own Anthony Chen, which took home the coveted Camera d’Or award at Cannes earlier this year, is a straightforward and unpretentious family drama set in the ‘90s during the financial crisis. based on Chen’s own childhood, Ilo Ilo is uncomplicated and ordinary; yet it is infused with such tender loving care that there is no real excuse to fault it. Although if it weren’t for its recent accolade, it could very well pass for a tV drama—albeit a very well-made one—with its predictable theme of domestic disturbances (misbehaving brat in school, foreign maid in peril), the plot devices are oh-so simply and clearly laid out. 12-year-old Jia Ler (Koh Jia Ler) is every parents’ nightmare. Not only is he in the habit of getting into fights in school, he is also an ill-disciplined kid at home. pregnant mom Hwee Leng (Yeo Yann Yann) has about had it with his antics, and so employs Filipino maid teresa (Angeli bayani) to care for the child while she is at work. Although Jia Ler is at first hostile to his maid, even to the point of getting her into trouble at a local stationery store, he slowly warms up to her following a minor road accident which leaves him with a bandaged arm. but as it turns out, Jia Ler is getting way too close to teresa, at least according to the increasingly jealous Hwee Leng, who holds an unwarranted and bitter suspicion towards their new maid. And as the financial crisis hits closer to home, with dad teck (tian Wen Chen) out of a job, the family has to learn how to cope within the family unit without teresa. there are no arty flourishes in Ilo Ilo (long pensive takes that have become the norm for Asian cinema are refreshingly absent) as director Chen opts for naturalistic performances and a straightforward script (with clever details and human observations) to do the job. With those pillars in place, he focuses on both set and costume designs (all painstakingly approved by the self-confessed obsessive compulsive director) to elevate the film’s realism. Yeo in particular is impressive as the short-tempered Hwee Leng, realistically unravelling before our eyes. but the real revelation here is first timer Koh, whose inexperience only adds a believable and surprisingly likeable edge to his rebel child role, and his chemistry with veteran Filipino actress bayani is palpable. Ilo Ilo may not offer anything new to local cinema, but it is certainly one of our most well-crafted films in recent years. Terry Ong

VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): this is a good time to free yourself from a curse that an immature soul placed on you once upon a time. I’m not talking about a literal spell cast by a master of the dark arts. Rather, I’m referring to an abusive accusation that was heaped on you, perhaps inadvertently, by a careless person whose own pain made them stupid. As I evaluate the astrological omens, I conclude that you now have the power to dissolve this curse all by yourself. You don’t need a wizard or a witch to handle it for you. Follow your intuition for clues on how to proceed. Here’s a suggestion to stimulate your imagination: Visualize the curse as a dark purple rose. see yourself hurling it into a vat of molten gold. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22): the current chapter of your life story may not be quite as epic as I think it is, so my advice may sound melodramatic. still, what I’m going to tell you is something we all need to hear from time to time. And I’m pretty sure this is one of those moments for you. It comes from writer Charles bukowski: “Nobody can save you but yourself. You will be put again and again into nearly impossible situations. they will attempt again and again through subterfuge, guise, and force to make you submit, quit and/or die quietly inside. but don’t, don’t, don’t. It’s a war not easily won, but if anything is worth winning then this is it. Nobody can save you but yourself, and you’re worth saving.” SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): the cosmos hereby grants you poetic license to be brazen in your craving for the best and brightest experiences… to be uninhibited in feeding your obsessions and making them work for you…to be shameless as you pursue exactly and only what you really, really want more than anything else. this is a limited time offer, although it may be extended if you pounce eagerly and take full advantage. For best results, suspend your pursuit of trivial wishes and purge yourself of your bitchy complaints about life. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): At the last minute, elsa Oliver impulsively canceled her vacation to New York. she had a hunch that something exciting would happen if instead she stayed at her home in england. A few hours later, she got a message inviting her to be a contestant on the UK television show Who Wants to be a millionaire? In the days and weeks that followed, she won the equivalent of $100,000. I’m not predicting anything quite as dramatic for you, sagittarius. but I do suspect that good luck is lurking in unexpected places, and to gather it in you may have to trust your intuition, stay alert for late-breaking shifts in fate, and be willing to alter your plans. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): “the only thing standing between you and your goal,” writes American author Jordan belfort, “is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it.” I don’t entirely agree with that idea. there may be other obstacles over which you have little control. but the bullshit story is often more than half the problem. so that’s the bad news, Capricorn. the good news is that right now is a magic moment in your destiny when you have more power than usual to free yourself of your own personal bullshit story. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Is the truth a clear, bright, shiny treasure, like a big diamond glittering in the sunlight? Does it have an objective existence that’s independent of our feelings about it? Or is the truth a fuzzy, convoluted thing that resembles a stream of smoke snaking through an underground cavern? Does it have a different meaning for every mind that seeks to grasp it? the answer, of course, is: both. sometimes the truth is a glittering diamond and at other times it’s a stream of smoke. but for you right now, Aquarius, the truth is the latter. You must have a high tolerance for ambiguity as you cultivate your relationship with it. It’s more likely to reveal its secrets if you maintain a flexible and cagey frame of mind.

PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): It’s a good time to indulge in wide-open, high-flying, anythinggoes fantasies about love—IF, that is…IF you also do something practical to help those fantasies come true. so I encourage you to dream about revolutionizing your relationship with romance and intimacy—as long as you also make specific

adjustments in your own attitudes and behavior that will make the revolution more likely. two more tips: 1. Free yourself from dogmatic beliefs you might have about love’s possibilities. 2. Work to increase your capacity for lusty trust and trusty lust. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): “A good story should make you laugh, and a moment later break your heart,” wrote Chuck palahniuk in his book stranger than Fiction. From what I can tell, Aries, the sequence is the reverse for you. In your story, the disruption has already happened. Next comes the part where you laugh. It may be a sardonic chuckle at first, as you become aware of the illusions you had been under before the jolt exposed them. eventually I expect you will be giggling and gleeful, eternally grateful for the tricky luck that freed you to pursue a more complete version of your fondest dream. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): taurus musician David byrne was asked by an interviewer to compose a seven-word autobiography. In response, he came up with ten words: “unfinished, unprocessed, uncertain, unknown, unadorned, underarms, underpants, unfrozen, unsettled, unfussy.” the coming days would be an excellent time for you to carry out similar assignments. I’d love to see you express the essential truth about yourself in bold and playful ways. I will also be happy if you make it clear that even though you’re a workin-progress, you have a succinct understanding of what you need and who you are becoming. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20): the French word sillage means “wake,” like the trail created behind a boat as it zips through water. In english, it refers to the fragrance that remains in the air after a person wearing perfume or cologne passes by. For our purposes, we will expand the definition to include any influences and impressions left behind by a powerful presence who has exited the scene. In my astrological opinion, Gemini, sillage is a key theme for you to monitor in the coming days. be alert for it. study it. It will be a source of information that helps you make good decisions. CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22): “Cataglottism” is a rarely used english word that has the same meaning as French kissing—engaging in liberal use of the tongue as you make out. but I don’t recommend that you incorporate such an inelegant, guttural term into your vocabulary. Imagine yourself thinking, while in the midst of French kissing, that what you’re doing is “cataglottism.” Your pleasure would probably be diminished. this truth applies in a broader sense, too. the language you use to frame your experience has a dramatic impact on how it all unfolds. the coming week will be an excellent time to experiment with this principle. see if you can increase your levels of joy and grace by describing what’s happening to you with beautiful and positive words. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): this is Correct Your First Impressions Week. It’s a perfect time for you to re-evaluate any of your beliefs that are based on mistaken facts or superficial perceptions. Are you open to the possibility that you might have jumped to unwarranted conclusions? Are you willing to question certainties that hardened in you after just a brief exposure to complicated processes? During Correct Your First Impressions Week, humble examination of your fixed prejudices is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. p.s. this is a good time to re-connect with a person you have unjustly judged as unworthy of you.

The fun loving founder of the city’s original secret bar 28 Hong Kong Street (and winner of Bartender of the Year and Best Cocktail Bar awards at our Readers’ Choice Awards two years in a row) talks to Terry Ong about the brighter side of life. The role of a barman has been like a best friend. A best friend you end up marrying. We always had each other’s back. I guess it was only a matter of time before we came to understand that we were destined to be together. I was dating a girl I met when both of us were focused on our professions. She moved to the Philippines to follow her career. I went to visit her for 24 intense hours during Sinulog because I realized she was my best friend. Three months later we were married on Mount Faber. Singapore was the loving and stern aunty that said “prove it”. She challenged me to reach my full potential and gave me room as I spread my wings. She gave me a home with support and affection. She has rewarded my conviction at every turn. I am a better man because of her. Due to my devotion it pains me to hear of others that take her kindness for granted. Singapore is a young city with an old soul. It has beautiful pockets of old world nostalgia while still having the charm of a rookie sensation. I hope to see within my lifetime a city-state that grows to rival New York and London in its diversity, relevance and charm. Why must all of the taxi drivers in this city change shifts during the busy hours of the afternoon? I find inspiration in images. Sounds silly but it’s true. Many of us create

cocktails to relive old memories or escape to places we always dreamed of. Seeing a picture of a guy lounging on a boat off the coast of Portugal, I would ask myself “What would be the best drink for that guy?” and “What ingredients would he have available?” It’s always an image.
