christmas and New Year parties

“Wrapped together tighter than chicken in a pandan leaf, their bodies moved in unison on the hawker center table. careless to the rule stating that they should clear up their own mess (and ignoring the voices tut-tutting nearby), the two made love sweeter than the sweetest ondeh-ondeh, more sublime than the kway teow from Stall 74. With the music of a thousand taxi uncle radios ringing in their ears, this harmonious coupling burst through racial barriers, societal prejudice and even the wobbly table leg beneath them. No matter! If sex is this life’s retort to death then this was their abandonment of all things kiasi; a slippery, lime juice-soaked festival on the floor. Not for them the overbearing weight of familial expectation and proper behaviour, not for them any pretence that they would return their trays when they were done with them. Their minds—such beautiful, sex-addled minds—were melded on another plane (though, if we’re honest, hers was still a little bit focused on the queue for fresh popiah and whether she’d make it back to the office on time). And, with the overhead strip lighting fizzing like an Alka-Seltzer on the morning after ZoukOut, this passionate partnering concluded not with a bang (that was already over), but with the clink of handcuffs as the two were marched off to face a custodial sentence and three strokes of the cane for gross indecency.”

The URA’s draft master plan for the next 10 to 15 years is much less snooze-worthy than most governmental efforts. Of particular note in this year’s plan is the proposal to preserve older neighborhoods, free-up more land space in the south and continuing the push to develop more cycling routes. Plus water taxis on the Kallang River! Singapore’s civic district is also set to be transformed into the country’s cultural center, with more public spaces and pedestrianized streets. An exhibition is open to the general public at The URA Centre (G/F Atrium, 45 Maxwell Rd.) from November 20 to December 19 where feedback and suggestions are welcomed.

There’s more reason to cheer for gender equality as women now occupy a higher proportion of seats in parliament compared to a decade ago, in an office known for being overwhelmingly dominated by men. Currently, 25 out of 99 seats are occupied by female and this upward trend seems to be buoyed by Lim Hwee Hua, who became the first woman minister in 2009. While this is a step in the right direction, much more could still be done to include women in higher ranking posts in the Cabinet.

Not only that—next year’s Singapore Art Week will feature more than 60 independent exhibitions, alongside mammoth art fair Art Stage. Perhaps most excitingly of all, five new independent galleries have just opened with more on the way (Pearl Lam brings her Shanghainese style to Gillman Barracks from January). Here we take a look at these new arrivals and peek ahead at what’s to come.

What: Run by former photographer Dominic Khoo, the 8,000 sq. ft. art gallery is luxury and artistry personified. It was just a couple of months after Khoo decided to close down his former space at Jalan Kilang Barat (which in November held the Super O Season pop-up parties) that he reopened at this picturesque spot. “I still wanted to push the idea of art and I wanted a space where viewers can see the works through a more realistic setting, where the pieces are placed at home,” says Khoo. Who: Never mind that it boasts a rather chi-chi setting (customers get to rest on the luxury sofas and sip on tea or coffee while they browse), the art pieces here are an infectious mix of street art influenced works and charming one-offs, including rare early works by Samantha Lo a.k.a. SKLO and Parisian Kongo ($20,000 upwards). Images from Khoo’s photography collection, of celebrities like Maggie Cheung and Lindsay Lohan, are also on sale ($6,888 upwards), as are one-off furniture piece by Italian brand Manoteca ($11,888 upwards). Why: The friendly atmosphere and warm ambiance makes you want to come back again and again. Where: 6 Kay Siang Rd., 6366-4642. When: Open Mon-Fri 10am-7pm, Sat 1-6pm.

What: The latest gallery to open in Dempsey is the sister gallery of Spain’s Barnadas Huang, a 1,500 sq. ft. space that offers some of the best in European art. “We brought the gallery to Singapore because we thought there was a gap in the market when it came to contemporary European art,” says partner Abigail Wong. Who: A staple of both veterans and emerging European artists, including names like Fernando Adam, Jesus Curia, Marc Jesus, Joan Longas and Gabriel Schmitz. Currently on show is The Real Barcelona. Works are priced from $500 upwards. Why: Apart from one-off shows, there has never been such a huge and diverse collection of European artists under one roof in Singapore. What: The second outpost by gallerist and collector Gary Sng—of Collectors Contemporary fame—which opened three weeks ago (official opening in January), is located inside an apartment building off Orchard Road, boasting an urban, industrial setting. “We have been discussing opening another space for a long time,” says Sng. “The place has a very relaxed environment. It makes me feel like I’m back in Los Angeles. This is a casual space so it feels more welcoming for novice art collectors, while our original gallery space at Jalan Kilang Barat will continue to offer original works in the secondary market.” Who: As its name suggests, the gallery mainly carries prints, silkscreened pieces and art-related merchandize from great art names like Gilbert & George, Robert Mapplethorpe, Andy Warhol and Takashi Murakami, just to name a few ($58 upwards). “Our other space feels like a museum, while this one feels like a museum shop, to put it simply,” says Sng. Why: For those who can’t afford to buy the real thing, these editioned pieces are as good as they get. It’s like the Affordable Art Fair, all year round. Where: #01-21 Park House, 21 Orchard Blvd., 6235-2110. When: Open Tue-Sun 11am-7pm.

COVER STORY New School Gillman Barrack’s latest addition, Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA), is not just an exhibition space; it is also a resiency and research center.

Gramercy Art

For savvy collectors

What: A three-week-old, two-story, 3,000 sq. ft. contemporary art space currently hosting a solo show by revered Spanish-American Neo-Expressionist artist Domingo Zapata. Located in River Valley, it will continue to stage shows by both established and new local artists over the next few months, as well as host art residencies. CEO Malini Murjani says, “We are not only looking to function as a space for artists to get their works out but are working towards becoming the platform that connects Singapore’s art scene to the US’s where Gramercy’s main outpost is currently located.” Who: Keen art enthusiasts will be thrilled to see Zapata’s works for the first time here—all 40 pieces of it—featuring his signature mixed-media, collage and graffiti-infused figurative paintings ($13,000 upwards). Why: Finally, a noteworthy art gallery around one of our favourite hoods to complete the shopping experience. Where: 81 Kim Yan Rd. When: Daily 10am-8pm.

More good news for the art scene, with the arrival of Nanyang Technological University’s Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) (43 Malan Rd., Gillman Barracks, 6684-0998, www.facebook.com/ CentreForContemporaryArt), which opened in October at Gillman Barracks. Unlike the rest of the galleries here, CCA features artist residencies from around the world, as well as hold regular seminars and research programs aimed at enhancing the local art scene. In line with NTU’s new strategy towards visual arts, the CCA is meant to be a fast developing hub for idea creation and debate in the arts and humanities. Being a bridge between different fields and pathways of knowledge, the arts represent a logical development for the university. Professor Freddy Boey, Provost of the Nanyang Technological University says, “With a focus on research and production of knowledge, the center will fit into NTU’s larger mission to support research and innovation across disciplines and areas of inquiry. There is now a concept of “whole-brain engineering” being espoused in the US where engineers engage both their right and left brains.” The art center is certainly an impressive space and is currently running its inaugural “Free Jazz” program, which has featured talks with art luminaries like CCA founding director Ute Meta Bauer and local artists including Zai Kuning. Upcoming on Dec 18, 7:30pm is a talk by Nikos Papastergiadis, professor at the school of Culture and Communication, University of Melbourne, who will the discuss the state of contemporary art, followed by a free improvisation performance by the Bani Haykal trio. Admission is free.

Morning Joe

Sunrise over Java’s Mount Bromo makes for a thrilling weekend away. Text and photography by Lauren Jade Hill

The sunrise from Mount Penanjakan

T

he cool climes and crisp mountain air of Java’s tranquil north-eastern highlands make it a refreshing weekend break from city life. And with the sweeping volcanic landscape of Bromo-TenggerSemeru National Park, and the surrounding mountainside of fertile farmland, rice fields and tropical rainforest, there’s even more reason to go. There’s culture on offer too, as you gain an insight into the region’s Tengger people, a Javanese Hindu group that has preserved its traditional culture and way of life. Most people, though, visit this region to see the orange glow of sunrise over Mount Bromo.

Essentials

First Light

Tourists travel to Bromo all-yearround, but the high season, with the least rain, is from June to September.

At 3:30 in the morning, bleary eyed travellers, wrapped-up in their warmest clothes, climb into the back of old jeeps, before heading higher up into the mountains across bumpy terrain, holding onto their seats as they climb steadily higher. After ascending most of the way, the jeeps wind their way across a desert-like landscape, following a trail of lights from the other jeeps and mopeds, before pulling up by a steep grassy slope that leads to the popular vantage point on 2,770 meter Mount Penanjakan—a popular spot for sunrise over the 2,329 meter active volcano Mount Bromo. Without the sun to warm the land, it’s cold on the mountain, but people are too busy readying their cameras to really care. When first light begins to show over the vast landscape of volcanic desert-plain, Mount Bromo and Mount Semeruglow in the soft light, while the long grass on the mountain-side takes on the sun’s hues. A while later, once things have warmed up, each group departs by jeep for what is the next stop on most people’s itinerary.

The desert plain that you stand over from Mount Penanjakan is actually called the Tengger Sand Sea, created by volcanic

Getting there Tigerair has Singapore–Surabaya flights leaving on Friday and returning on Sunday from around $80. Alternatively you could fly with Silkair for around $276. From Surabaya, the BromoTengger-Semeru region is a threehour drive but transfers can easily be arranged through your hotel. Return transfers between Surabaya airport and Java Banana Lodge cost IDR2000,000 ($218).

When to go

Crossing the Sea of Sand by horse

What to take Take good walking shoes and warm clothes, including a jacket, scarf and gloves, as it gets really cold in the highlands, especially in the early hours of the morning. You’ll need a scarf or facemask to protect your face as you cross the Tengger Sand Sea, as well as sunglasses to protect your eyes.

activity and protected since 1919. This sea of sand is part of The Bromo-TenggerSemeru National Park that covers 5,250 hectares and consists of Java’s highest peak Mount Semeru (3,676 meter), idyllic lakes and rivers, and the Tengger Caldera—a vast volcanic landscape formed after an eruption, causing the formation of four volcanoes, including Mount Bromo. All of this National Park is surrounded by a steep crater wall.

You can choose to cross the Tengger Sand Sea on foot or by horse. On horseback, you can ride as far as the foot of Mount Bromo, before dismounting to walk up the sand-filled steps that lead steeply up to Bromo’s smoking crater. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic (and pretty breathtaking) view of the Caldera, Tengger Sand Sea and perfect cone of Mount Batok. Around the volcano locals sell offerings made

Excursions and guides can be arranged with the hotel at the time of booking or on arrival, as well as the hire of 4WD jeeps, while bicycles are free for guests to use at Java Banana Lodge. The sunrise tour costs IDR350,000 ($38), with horseback riding as an optional extra at around IDR100,000 ($11). Alternatively excursions can be arranged through Mount Bromo Tour (www.mount-bromo-tour.com).

Entry requirements Singaporeans and all other ASEAN citizens can visit Indonesia without a visa for up to 30 days, but most other nationalities need to pay US$25 ($31) for a visa on arrival.

Where to Stay Java Banana Lodge Java Banana Lodge has become known as the best, and possibly only luxurious, place to stay in the Bromo region. Situated in a serene garden scattered with contemporary sculptures, just a short walk from the nearby village, and surrounded by farmland and mountainous landscape, the property consists of a lodge, with villas as well as suites, an art gallery that showcases spectacular Javanese photography, and a café that serves Java coffee, as well as their banana specialties such as banana crepes and grilled banana with lemon. The restaurant, which is decorated with photography of Javanese landscape and people, serves wholesome Western and Indonesian dishes, while breakfast can be

eaten on the scenic roof-top terrace. Each year Java Banana hosts the Jazz Gunung Festival at their outdoor theater with appearances from international and local musicians. The festival is held in June but check online for next year’s updates (www. jazzgunung.com). Rates start at IDR1,210,000 ($129) per night and bookings can be made online (www.java-banana.com).

Yoschi’s Hotel An alternative, and economical, place to stay is Yoschi’s Hotel (www.yoschihotel. com), a popular German-owned guesthouse outside the village of Ngadisari, where room rates start at IDR103,500 ($11).

from flowers to throw into the smoking crater for good luck and prosperity. This has special significance to the Tengger people during the annual YadnyaKasada ceremony, taking place on the 14th day of the Kasada month in the Hindu calendar, when offerings are thrown into Bromo’s crater for a good harvest and health in the coming year. After riding back across the sandy plain and returning by jeep to your hotel, it’s just about time for breakfast. Then, the remainder of the day can be spent exploring the surrounding landscape by hiring a 4WD jeep, hiking or cycling, with or without a guide. If you plan ahead, you can take part in longer tours to the rainforest, across the Caldera, or on longer volcanic trips. n Java Banana Lodge

Dreamweave & other stories The buzz: Millenia Walk’s latest arrival is a rustic-industrial furniture and accessories store stocking heritage-rich brands including Danish names Sika-Design and Tine K Home, as well as Italian leather specialist Campomaggi. The vibe: Stripped down to its bare bones—exposed ducts, brick walls and concrete floors—the brightly-lit space feels airy and warm despite being cluttered with display items, thanks to the high

ceiling and earthy rattan furniture. The goods: Almost everything here is for sale, even the Herskind + Herskind bicycles hanging from the ceiling. Most of the store is made up of artisanal goods from the three foundation brands, each with their distinct specialty. Danish furniture label Sika-Design is behind the sleek (and nostalgic) rattan and wicker seats ($390 upwards) which are accented with eclectic furnishings like

cushions, lamps and candles from Tine K Home ($13.90 upwards). Campomaggi’s beautifully aged leather bags ($300 upwards) are showcased in a dedicated corner at the back of the store. Other lifestyle brands stocked here include eco-friendly label Fur & Skins, Nud and Louise Kragh ($48 upwards). Why you’ll be back: For thoughtfully designed, well-crafted and very versatile pieces in every possible interior theme.

I-S MAGAZINE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2013

So we’ve got a competition for aspiring baking professionals running until the end of the year. Here's a look at what we've been getting delivered right to our doorstep: Hearty Hummingbird, Molten Passionfruit and Triple Chocolate cupcakes by Corrine Tan, 32

Our favorite was the hummingbird cake. Not only did it come topped with a gorgeous dehydrated pineapple 'flower', the cake itself was a delight; moist but not too dense. The passionfruit entry had a light sponge cake base and the chocolate ones had a lovely banana filling. Gingerbread cupcake by Brennagh Lee, 25

Our very first entry: a gingerbread cupcake, decorated with a tall Christmas tree. It looked like quite an architectural feat, but Lee pulled it off by (ingeniously!) using an overturned ice cream cone as a base. Interested in taking part? Bring your cupcakes to our office (weekdays, between 10am and 6pm) at #14‑03, 211 Henderson Rd. Cupcakes are judged based on taste, presentation and originality. Send at least two cupcakes of each flavor (one to taste and one to photograph). There's no upper limit on how many you can send. The best entries will face off in a live finale very soon.

CITYSCAPE

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

Play Time With their elusive X factor beckoning you to return time and again, these nightspots pop into mind whenever you plan to hit the town. We find out how these Singapore Experience Awards nightspot finalists guarantee a good time in store for all you partygoers.

Tanjong Beach Club

The Vault

Zouk

Tanjong Beach Club

The Vault

Zouk

What it’s like: Our very own 1950s-style beach club is situated on one of Sentosa’s most secluded beaches, making the joint feel exclusive without sacrificing their funloving, unstuffy atmosphere. Complete with an alfresco bar, indoor and outdoor dining areas, a pool, daybeds and a stunning beach. If you like people-watching, this club is a favorite with pretty, hip young things.

What it’s like: This “indie-yuppie” CBD watering hole has just moved to Boat Quay and is now breathing new life into a once-dodgy part of town. Occupying four shop-house units, the new digs have a similar aesthetic with lots of dark brick and metal for that sophisticated yet underground vibe. Even the same three-tonne historic vault door has been reinstalled at the new premises.

What it’s like: It’s amazing that a club that opened over two decades ago (does anyone even remember 1991 anymore?) is still enjoying so much success. The iconic space comprises of a main room for big-name DJs, Phuture for the hip hop crowd, Velvet Underground for discerning partygoers and Wine Bar for “pre-game” drinks.

What’s on the menu: Beachy, summery cocktails are essential to a good lounge in the sun, so don’t miss signature drinks like the Blackforest mojito and Tanjong Sling. You can also refuel on the spot with the many seafood-centric dishes like warm octopus salad and Maine lobster omelet.

What’s on the menu: The Kitchen serves a mix of comforting bistro classics and edgier east-meets-west plates, while at the Lounge, you’ll find a wide variety of drinks ranging from cold beers to premium champers to loosen you up.

BEST FOR SUN WORSHIPPERS

Party on: Thanks to Lo & Behold’s music director, DJ KFC, music is never an afterthought here. Their weekly Smack My Beach Up parties (every Sunday) are always reliable for feel-good nu disco tunes, and the thrice-yearly Full Steam Ahead bash draws as many as 3,500 revelers. Dance, swim, sunbathe, play beach volleyball or beer pong—anything goes. Did you know? To cut down on waiting time, a pager and tablet system was implemented that lets partygoers order and collect their drinks without having to stand around in line. 120 Tanjong Beach Walk, 6270-1355, www.tanjongbeachclub.com

BEST FOR THE ARTY CROWD

Party on: The roster of residents DJs spin a mix of genres, mainly smooth house and warm techno beats, while frequent collaborators, like the Darker Than Wax and Pushin’On collectives, up the funk factor during guest appearances. It’s not just parties here, though—The Vault has become increasingly well known for its artists’ markets, art exhibitions and even plays. Did you know? Last year, they threw an exclusive party to launch cult filmmaker David Lynch’s limited edition Champagne bottle for Dom Pérignon, which featured a live rendition of the Twin Peaks theme song. Talk about indie cred. 23 Circular Rd., 6222-5001, www.thevault.com.sg.

BEST FOR DANCING TILL DAWN

What’s on the menu: You can go as high or low as you want here—whether you’re drinking Champagne or Red Bull vodkas, people don’t really care. The sour plum shots are definitely an institution, though, as are the bangers and mash in a cup sold from a tiny cart outside. Party on: Their weekly roster of international guest DJs seldom fails to impress. Look out for even more up-and-comers with a stronger focus on acts debuting in Singapore, as well as curated music series like Para//el, which brings in the very cutting edge of techno and house music. And, of course, keynote dance fest ZoukOut (Dec 14-15) is an absolute must every year. Did you know? They may be party animals, but the Zouk team also does a lot of charity work, from sponsoring and supporting nonprofit organizations to helping paint houses and deliver care packages to the needy living around Tiong Bahru. They even throw an annual lunch for senior citizens around the neighborhood every Chinese New Year. 17 Jiak Kim St., 6738-2988, wwww.zoukclub.com. n

Smooth Moves

Two outstanding club staff tell us how potential party nightmares turned out to have happy endings after all. “I once had a strongly intoxicated customer who came alone to the bar. She was so drunk she could not walk properly and I had to call security to help me send her to the taxi stand. But the drivers refused to drive her home. Without hesitation, I got into a taxi with her and made sure she got home safely. A few months later, on my birthday, I received a gift and a letter from her. My help meant so much to her as she realized that there are still good people around who would offer support when someone is in need.” Liza binte Bakar, guest service assistant at KU DÉ TA (SkyPark, Tower 3 Marina Bay Sands, 1 Bayfront Ave., 66887688, www.kudeta.com/ singapore) “A VIP guest flew into town, and urgently called us up to organize a private birthday party for his close friend. The real challenge? We had to come up with a 3D cake in the shape of an aircraft within 24 hours. I worked with our pastry chef and we managed to present a superb cake to much fanfare at the party. My guest was thrilled!” Samuel Lee, chief liaison officer at 1-Altitude (61-63/ F, 1 Raffles Place, 64380410, www.1-altitude.com)

DINING OpeN DOOR

Lower East Side Taqueria The food: Dig into plates such as the charcoal grilled beef with grape and green apple salad ($28), as well as snacky items like the octopus and squid burrito ($18) and chilli con carne tacos (from $13), which come in three levels of spiciness. (Warning: They’re serious about their chilli. Level one provides a comfortable heat, level two is pleasingly tongue numbing and level three is truly incendiary, and will leave your mouth burning long after the meal.) The buzz: The team behind Spathe Public House have just launched this open air Mexican eatery on East Coast Road, nearby other hip spots like Rabbit Carrot Gun. The vibe: It’s a funky colorful space, with bright green, blue and yellow accents. The ceiling is decorated with a “chandelier” made of chairs, and there are raw zinc walls (salvaged from shipyards) and faux mounted animalhead decorations.

The drinks: Wash down all that grub down with milky horchata ($5)—that should quell the flames—craft beers (from $7/half pint; $12/pint) and tequila tasting flights (from $28). There’s a good happy hour deal too: draught pints go for half pint prices before 8pm. Why you’ll be back: It’s a chilledout, affordable spot to chow down on creative Mexican eats and throw back cold craft brews in the East.

19 East Coast Rd., 9824‑4009, www.lowereastsidesg.com. open Mon‑Fri noon‑11pm; Sat‑Sun 10am‑11pm. CHIN HUI WEN

FOOD FOR THOUGHT We were pleasantly surprised by a craft beer reception—rather than the usual Champagne— following a recent piano recital. Rosemary- and honey-infused Spanish brew La Socarrada ($8.50/330ml bottle) isn’t necessarily the kind of hoppy affair favored by beer nerds, but it’s delicate, aromatic and still substantial, and goes terrifically with light bites like brie or seared scallops. Find it at Meidi‑ya (#B1-50 Liang Court, 177 River Valley Rd., 6339-1111, www.meidi-ya.com.sg). Clara Lim

LUNCH BOx LP+Tetsu The deal: The new $28 bento box at this swish French-Japanese restaurant includes some perfectly fried pork katsu, sashimi (with soy espuma for dipping), rice and miso soup. Alternatively, opt for the Encounters menu, which offers two courses ($35) or three courses ($45) of plates like duck breast with red fruit miso. Why it’s worth it: You get a full meal for under $30 at a joint by one-Michelin-starred chef Laurent Peugeot—it’s a steal. The service is as excellent as the food. Plus, the place is never too crowded, so you won’t feel rushed through your meal. #03‑18 Tanglin Mall, 163 Tanglin Rd., 6836‑3112, www.lptetsu.com. Available daily 11:30am‑2:30pm; 6‑7:30pm. OPEN BAR The beast The buzz: On the edge of Kampong Glam you’ll find this three-story bourbon specialist, opened by Jamie Koh, who’s also behind mexican shots bar chupitos at clarke Quay. The décor: Raw, woody and rustic, but with just enough polish. Koh, who went to school in Georgia, was inspired by Southern watering holes and barns. The drinks: Over 30 bourbons to pick from, including the more unusual Willet Pot Still Reserve ($16/glass) from

Kentucky and St. George breaking and entering ($14/glass) from california. And we hear they’re bringing in the super-rare Pappy van Winkle’s Family Reserve too. Their fun cocktail list (from $17) has mint juleps, bourbon “mojitos” and sweet tea cocktails. The food: Southern snacks—wings ($8) and loaded potato skins ($8)—dominate. but there’s also a little diner upstairs where you can get heartier dishes, like chicken and waffles and shrimp and grits.

The music: classic rock and a bit of American punk. The crowd: bourbon-hunting Americans and laidback drinkers who like the good stuff but aren’t too precious about it. Why you’ll be back: They’re barrelageing manhattans and Negronis in-house right now. be there to try them when they’re ready.

SCENEStEALER Lloyd Kaufman The legendary filmmaker and founder of America’s first indie film studio Troma (Tromeo & Juliet, The Toxic Avenger) is in town this month to conduct a two-day masterclass. He talks to us about cult status and guilty pleasures. What are the necessary elements in making a good movie? I do not know what makes a “good movie” but I do believe one very important thing is to follow the Shakespearean mantra “To thine own self be true.” How do you define cult? cult is when you have sold-out retrospectives of your work one day, but get kicked out of line for a screening at cannes for not wearing a suit another day. cult is receiving art work and fan letters requesting autographs from around the world, but having to explain your career to extended members of your family another day. cult is taking the subway as an unrecognized ordinary person, while having legions of fans show up at conventions to show off their Troma body art.

bROUGHT TO YOU bY

What is your own personal guilty pleasure or vice? my own personal guilty pleasure is chewing gum and spitting it on the sidewalk (I hope this gets me frisked at the airport)!

Lloyd Kaufman’s 2-Day Filmmaking Masterclass is on Dec 14-15, 9am-5pm. LaSalle College of the Arts, 1 McNally St., 6496-5000. $495 from www.masterfilmmakers.com. TeRRY ONG

Joy Rides

What's the secret to your success or longevity? Success? Longevity? I think you have me mistaken for Andy Kaufman, who is still alive even after dying from lung cancer. Now that is longevity. No but really, Troma’s greatest success is our loyal and supportive fan base. We’ve always been very interactive with our fans and they have stuck with us over the years.

What do you have to say to art-house film buffs? I respect art-house film buffs for supporting independent art and not fueling the media conglomerates. They understand that art is very important to the human spirit, and is a reflection of society, which is why it is important for us to nurture new and unique voices and support independent art instead of supporting big budget remakes that offer no reflection of the human psyche.

Like most local urbanites, we can’t live without cabs. And there’s nothing that makes our day quite as much as encountering a capable driver who makes us laugh or takes our minds lim Soon Keng off our worries during the ride. “my motto is to make every customer happy after each trip,” says veteran Comfort Taxi driver Lim Soon Keng. And he sure sets a great example for fellow cabbies. “Once, I picked up an American lady from the airport who had no cash on her. I lent her $100 for the two days she spent in Singapore—we have been friends ever since.” 6552-1111, www.cdgtaxi.com.sg.

I-S MAGAZINE FRIDAY, DecembeR 13, 2013

The recently revamped District 10 is now all grown up and a lot more focused on classy Old World wines, plus there’s a brand new Antinori Room—a private dining area that’s named after one of Italy’s top wine companies. Naturally, you want the good stuff here. A bottle of Antinori wine will set you back at least $88, so go all out and get the chef to customize a pairing menu. It’s great for those hard-to-impress dates.

Although this remake by Spike Lee of Korean Park chan-Wook’s cult classic Oldboy (2003) is less twisted or original—there’s still a lot to root for. Josh brolin is excellent as Joe Doucette; the womanizing, heavydrinking ad exec and absentee father, who gets imprisoned for 20 years in a motel room, with food passed through a metal door by an anonymous attendant and a TV as his only window to the outside world. After he escapes, Doucette attempts to make amends, with his long-lost daughter, but the mystery deepens after encounters with social worker mary (elizabeth Olsen), who he is attracted to, and tormenter Adrian (Sharlto copley), who he attempts to kill. Revealing more will spoil the fun, but look out for Samuel L. Jackson as chaney, who runs the prison joint, and a single-take three-minute fighting sequence that apparently took six weeks to rehearse.

Diana

chiwetel ejiofor plays Solomon Northup, a black man from New York who is abducted and sold into slavery, during pre-civil War America. The ever reliable michael Fassbender plays his sadistic owner, while brad Pitt, a canadian abolitionist, alters Northup’s course in life. A supporting powerhouse cast, including Paul Pano, Paul Giamatti and Alfre Woodard, increase its chances of an Oscar. The period costumes don’t look too shabby either. Opens December 19

Is this Leonardo Dicaprio’s latest shot at the Oscars? He and frequent collaborator martin Scorsese’s return to the big screen, after 2010’s Shutter Island, looks like a fun, breezy examination into the life of the controversial Jordan belfort, the millionaire stockbroker who served 20 months in prison for defrauding investors in a massive security scheme in the ‘90s. With Scorsese at the helm, the cat’s in the bag.

even if reviews for the film have not been kind, Naomi Watt’s much talked-about performance should score an Oscar nomination. Downfall’s Oliver Hirschbiegel focuses on the love story between Diana and her doctor Hasnat Khan, and Watt’s performance is one of her best yet (never mind the naysayers).

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Touted as a prime source of “kick-@ ss spirituality,” author Danielle LaPorte has advice that’s good for you to hear. “You will always be too much of something for someone,” she says, “too big, too loud, too soft, too edgy.” But that’s exactly as it should be, she adds. It would be a mistake to “round out your edges,” because then you would “lose your edge.” And I’m here to tell you that you need all of your edge right now, Sagittarius. It’s time to ignore people’s mediocre expectations and push past their limits. To be true to yourself, you will probably have to be too much of something for several someones. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Going into my spiritual mentoring session with the priestess, I had the intention of discovering truths about myself I didn’t know before. That meant stirring up revelations about my ignorance as well as my potentials. I wanted assistance in facing my flaws as well as in tapping into my dormant powers. It worked. Her guidance was a potent catalyst. I was able to shed the debilitating nonsense stories I’d been telling myself about who I am. I awakened strengths that had been asleep. What I wish for you, Capricorn—indeed, what I predict for you—is a comparable experience. To expedite matters, go out in search of a person, adventure, or breakthrough that can help provide you with the kind of prod I received. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): I bet people will be gossiping about you more than usual. Is there anything you can do to ensure that it’s mostly benevolent gossip? Yes, there is. First, make sure that when you gossip about others, you are unfailingly positive in your comments. If you don’t have anything good to say about someone, don’t say it. Second, be on your best behavior. Communicate clearly and don’t even think about taking unethical shortcuts. Finally, contribute more inspirational energy than usual to every group you’re part of. Be an effervescent team player.

Art Week 13 - 19 January 2014

PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Maybe your ego isn’t big enough. I’m serious. Is it possible that you could benefit from being more proud of yourself? Would it be healthy for you to give yourself more credit for the struggles you have weathered and the skills you have mastered and the beauty you have managed to forge out of the chaotic raw materials that life has given you? I’ve got a good feeling about this, Pisces. I can imagine you summoning the playful courage you will need to express more confidence. I can even picture you beginning to fantasize about embarking on certain stirring adventures you’ve never believed you were strong enough to try before now. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Thinking inside the box will be a crime against your nature in the coming weeks. The last place you want to be is in a pigeonhole. I advise you to stay far away from tight squeezes, claustrophobic “sanctuaries,” and “convenient” confinements. If you’re in a one-size-fits-all situation, you simply won’t be able to access your highest intelligence. So then where should you be? I am rooting for you to wander into the wild frontiers where unsanctioned wonders and marvels await you. I’d love for you to find virgin terrain and uncharted territories where the boring old rules don’t apply. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Mike Finnigan is a veteran keyboardist and blues vocalist who has toured with more than 20 major acts, including Jimi Hendrix, Etta James, Leonard Cohen and Los Lonely Boys. There’s a primal quality to his singing. It’s gritty and fluid and tempestuous, almost feral at times. I understand perfectly why Bonnie Raitt has called him a “tall drink of bacon.” The sound he makes with his voice is that lush and tasty. Can you guess his astrological sign? It’s Taurus, of course. I’m naming him your patron saint this week because you yourself are as close as you have ever come to being a tall drink of bacon.

I-S MAGAZINE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2013

GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20): French painter Henri Matisse thought highly of his own work. He tended to ignore critics because he didn’t think they understood his art well enough to produce intelligent critiques. There was one person whose opinion he was willing to heed, though; a single colleague who he said had earned to right to

evaluate and assess his art: Pablo Picasso. I encourage you, Gemini, to come up with your own short list of people whose judgment you totally trust and respect. It’s a good time to seek out their feedback on how you’re doing. CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22): How is it possible that you have come so far and worked so diligently only to be resigned now to hanging out in limbo, waiting around for the lucky break that may or may not ever arrive? I’m here today to escort you out of this infernal place. If you resist, my assignment is to drag you out. Why am I so adamant? Because I am sure it’s a mistake for you to be passive and hope for the best. You need to resume working diligently, focused for now on what’s right in front of you without worrying too much about the big picture. In my opinion, that approach will lead you to unforeseen help -- and a clarification of the big picture. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Your levels of personal magic are high. The radiance beaming out of your eyes is extra sparkly. There’s an artistry to the way you are expressing yourself. Without even trying, you’re exuding natural charisma and animal magnetism. In light of all these advantages, I suspect you will have an elevated capacity for both giving and receiving pleasure. In fact, I predict that your ability to feel really good and make other people feel really good will be at a peak. I hereby designate this, the Week of Supreme Bliss. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): The BBC reported on an expert who combs Switzerland’s Risoud Forest to find the spruce trees whose wood can be made into the highest quality violins. After years of experience, Lorenzo Pellegrini knows which few trees will produce instruments with the most resonant tones. They grow slowly and have few knots. They need to have had enough water to grow strong, but not so much water that they’re mushy. Your task in the coming weeks, Virgo, has a certain resemblance to the master tree-picker’s work. It’s time for you to start selecting and gathering the raw materials you will use to craft your own lyrical story in 2014. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22): Here’s the bad news: For all of us, including you, there is a gap between our intentions and our actual effects. Here’s the good news: Now is your special time to narrow that gap. More bad news: All of us, you included, are periodically guilty of sending out mixed messages. We confuse people with our ambivalence; what we say is sometimes different from what we feel. More good news: Now is your special time to reduce your mixed messages to as close to zero as possible. One more taste of bad news: Like all of us, you are a bit hypocritical. You engage in behavior that you criticize in others. You don’t practice what you preach. One last piece of good news: Now is your special time to work on being forthright, genuine, and consistent. SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): “I am very fond of strawberries and cream,” said author Dale Carnegie, “but I have found that for some strange reason, fish prefer worms. So when I went fishing, I didn’t think about what I wanted. I thought about what they wanted. I didn’t bait the hook with strawberries and cream. Rather, I dangled a worm or grasshopper in front of the fish.” That’s a good teaching story for you, Scorpio. In order to get your desires fulfilled by the people who have the power to do that, you should give them what they actually long for—not what you long for, nor what you wish they would long for. This is always true, of course, but it’s especially applicable to what’s going on in your life right now.

WHAT’S NEW AT Online

The co-founder and CEO of PropertyGuru, one of Asia’s biggest property portals, talks to Crystal Lee about keeping positive and collecting grey hairs. www.is-magazine.com I am, by and large, a very optimistic person. Being enthusiastic and positive towards everything life throws at you is something my parents instilled into me. As a kid, I wanted to be a policeman. I ran around wearing a small plastic British policeman’s helmet!

Poverty and sickness, especially involving kids, is particularly upsetting for me. Having seen kids and families with no fresh water, no electricity, no education and basic food in our travels made me realize how incredibly fortunate we are.

Chilling out is hard for me, but I am getting better! Weekdays are consumed by work. I read fiction on my Kindle at night to switch off, have dinner and drinks with my wife and friends on Friday or Saturday nights, and devote as much time as I can to my kids on the weekend.

This is why every year, our company focuses on giving back to society.

Pamper yourself silly this festive season with our picks of top spa treatments.

If I had to choose between love or money, it would be the love of my family, for sure. Money has never been that important to me, but I’m truly grateful that we now have more than we need.

Set out to create something that will change the world

My dad was in the British Army, so I grew up moving from one country to another, never spending more than two years in one. I made friends, lost some and had to adapt to new environments constantly. I knew my varied experience with different environment and cultures would provide me with a good start in my career outside of England. I found myself thriving in new roles and in different geographic locations. When people ask me what it feels like to be such a successful entrepreneur, I never fail to mention that it is always lots of fun!

Knead This

Sometimes I see signs of complacency and arrogance creeping into PropertyGuru and it scares me. If we are to continue to succeed we’ll need to constantly improve, learn and innovate.

My wife would say that I am collecting grey hairs! I’ve been living in Singapore for eight years now, the longest I have lived anywhere. I love the weather, the people, the culture, the food and the quality of life.

The Singapore property market is extremely dynamic and exciting, but at the same time, it can be quite baffling even to the most experienced of property investors.

Follow your dreams and do what you are really passionate about. Set out to create something that will change the world. Be prepared to take risks, make lots of mistakes and work without or with a low income for a few years— as I did. You’ll experience the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, sometimes all within the same day, but it’s all worth it.
