Cover Story

After the worst riots here in 40 years, the government moved quickly to enact an alcohol ban in Little India, citing the problems caused when large groups of men gather to drink cheap liquor on the street on Sundays, starting fights and generally making a nuisance of themselves. In some quarters the new rules were judged reactionary, if not a little racist. Thankfully, the body Of Over Zealous executives (bOOZe) this week stepped in to clarify the rules about when, where and why you’re allowed to drink in public here.

Police operational effectiveness The Singapore Police Force is rolling out a new initiative to transform police posts island-wide. Unmanned police posts in West Coast, Radin Mas and Marsiling have been opened, where residents can make police reports, apply for a passport and drop off any found items, without the aid of an officer. As a result, personnel are freed up for patrols. If residents encounter difficulties, a video function or phone will connect them to an officer.

Popular social news commentary site, The Breakfast Network, was wrestled to submission earlier this month by the Media Development Authority (MDA), having to register their site and vow not to receive foreign donations. Founder Bertha Henson said the registration required listing all contributors for the MDA. The team has moved back to blogging instead, with political commentator, Cherian George, lamenting the loss of the Government’s temporary relaxed attitude towards the media.

The buzz: H&m’s higher-end sister label cOS, short for collection of Style, recently opened its first Southeast Asian store at ION Orchard to give Zara a run for its money. The vibe: Sparse, muted and minimal, in the same vein as the brand’s design ethos. The 5,900 sq. ft. space seems to go on forever, with womenswear, menswear and childrenwear neatly displayed for easy browsing. The goods: Whatever the season, the cOS look is always impeccably cut and luxuriously crafted in distinct minimalist style. colors are often safe—black, white, grey and navy—though there’s some red and green in the current

Autumn/Winter collection. For Spring/ Summer 2014, expect the same rigorous silhouettes in soft pastels. Price-wise, the numbers start where H&m’s end: $29 upwards for tops, $49 upwards for trousers, $69 upwards for dresses and $135 upwards for outerwear. Why you’ll be back: Now, who can say no to great style at affordable prices? besides, everyone’s wearing Zara to death. And while there’s a second outlet that just opened at Westgate mall, the ION boutique is bigger and more conveniently located.

Singapore Art Week 2014 Special

SINGAPORE'S ART GEMS Galerie Sogan & Art

BE DAZZLED BY THE RANGE OF QUALITY ART EXPERIENCES DURING SINGAPORE ART WEEK 2014.

Singapore’s visual art scene will come alive with the return of Singapore Art Week from January 13-19 2014. Join art collectors and enthusiasts alike as they enjoy a variety of blockbuster art events featuring international artists alongside established and emerging talents. Here are some key highlights not to be missed.

Art Stage Singapore Seize the opportunity to enjoy the newest and most cutting edge masterpieces at the fourth edition of Asia’s leading contemporary art fair. Underscoring the fair’s Asian identity, Asia-Pacific galleries make up 80% of more than 100 top international galleries, with 29 Singapore-based galleries showcasing both established and emerging local artists including Sarah Choo, Jolene Lai and Jane Lee. Local artists will also get their chance to shine at the specially curated South-East Asia Platform this year, one of eight platforms with a museum-like layout showcasing art from a specific region or country. Jan 16-19 2014. Halls D, E, F, Level B2, Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre, 10 Bayfront Ave., www.artstagesingapore.com. S$33 (day pass), S$63 (season pass).

With more than 50 arts groups and artists calling it home, the Aliwal Arts Centre showcases its diverse mix of creative talents during Singapore Art Week. Discover this art gem and immerse yourself in the creations by these local talents through a series of art exhibitions, musical performances and art jams. Watch visual artist Tang Ling Nah as she works with dancers and musicians across different art practices in a unique multi-disciplinary showcase. Participate with performance artist Malvina Tan and a ‘traveling trunk’, as she takes visitors on a nostalgic journey that traces the paths of old immigrants arriving along the Singapore River. With an energetic lineup of live bands, DJs, street art and dance performances by some of the city’s most talented artists, the vibrant arts centre and residency’s one night festival is not to be missed.

An Evening at Gillman Barracks Expect a night of special happenings and the premiere of exciting new shows at Gillman Barracks. Home to 16 international world-glass galleries presenting cuttingedge exhibitions against lush greenery and colonial buildings, this is one of Asia’s prominent districts to enjoy international and local art. Talents to catch include three of Singapore’s most promising local artists—the latest video works from multidisciplinary artists Charles Lim (Future Perfect) and Ang Song Ming (Fost Gallery), and a showcase of Jane Lee’s new series of paintings (Sundaram Tagore Gallery). Be sure to stop by the Centre for Contemporary Art for its first exhibition, Paradise Lost, as well as experimental pop-up, The U Factory, an eclectic showcase of Singaporean tastemakers in design, culture, art and dining, which will host art exhibitions by Boedi Widjaja, ROOTS, and Malaysia’s L.I.E. Jan 17 2014, 7pm-late. (Exhibitions are ongoing throughout the whole of Art Week.) 9 Lock Rd., www.gillmanbarracks.com. Free admission.

Aliwal Urban Art Festival

Jan 18 2014, 5-10pm. 28 Aliwal St., 6345-0131, www.aliwalartscentre.sg. Free admission.

Art in Motion Sign up for this bespoke art tour that will bring you to 13 participating galleries across the city’s arts and heritage district, including Raffles Hotel Arcade, Tanjong Pagar Distripark and Old Hill Street Police Station. Actually

The Actually crew’s biggest boutique to date is still as off-beat and hip as ever, with more labels to be had, including mainstays like Freitag and Boy London alongside local names such as Coupe Cousu.

This small but well-stocked flea market of a shop offers an ever-changing collection of restored furniture and eccentric antiques such as a French medicinal bottle and vintage wine barrels. Prices are incredibly affordable and up for negotiation, too— extremely rare for a shop on Orchard Road.

013 was a year of sad closures. We said goodbye to Blackmarket in September, after it won our Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Indie Boutique for the third year running. Multi-label boutiques Hide & Seek and The Society of Black Sheep soon followed suit, though the latter is moving to a new location next year. We were thrilled however with more openings and expansions in the indie retail scene, worthy of celebration. Here is our pick of the ten best:

The Moongi Project

#B2‑23/24 Orchard Central, 181 Orchard Rd., 9889‑7541, www.themoongiproject.com.

The Godown

HOME

#04‑06, 313@somerset, 313 Orchard Rd., 6336‑7298, www.actually.com.sg.

Clad in dark wood and industrial fittings, this swanky boutique offers a faultless range of menswear and accessories from local indie labels K by Kevin Seah and Ed Et Al as well as international names like Jack Spade and Masunaga Eyewear from Japan. HOME

The Godown

44 Zion Rd., 6333‑8966, www. thegodownstore.com.

Everything you see in this quaint vintage home furnishing store—whether it's the herringbone-patterned coffee table, or the glass table lamp—is for sale and new items are added each month, so there's always something new to discover.

Nana & Bird

#01‑65 59 Eng Hoon St., 9117‑0430, www. nanaandbird.com.

The second and flagship store of Nana & Bird retains the intimate, homey vibe of the first outlet, but offers different labels spanning ready-to-wear, accessories and homeware such as Heinui from France and British brand Falcon Enamelware. LIFESTYLE

PACT

Styled like a quaint 18th-century tea salon with a modern, minimalist approach, the hip sibling of Surrender carries cutting-edge names like Viktor & Rolf and Christian Dada in menswear, womenswear and accessories. LIFESTYLE

Supplies & Co.

Temporium

72 & 74 Dunlop St., 6294‑1139, www. temporium.com.sg.

We love pop-ups, and this store-diner-gallery (through Mar 8) is arguably one of the most interesting so far. The 4,000 sq. ft. space carries a cool range of clothes, ceramics, books and curios, plus food and coffee. n

The buzz: Hot on the heels of i.t’s first multi-label flagship comes a second outlet at Bugis Junction, this time smaller and fronted by Hong Kong-based cult label Chocoolate. The vibe: Each of the four labels housed within the 5,300 sq. ft. store has its own distinct theme. Chocoolate, which takes up a large part of the multi-concept space, follows the same design concept as seen in its Hong Kong and China stores—clean-lined, polished and monochromatic, with a couple of walls made to look like a giant chocolate bar. Izzue, 5cm and fingercroxx, on the other hand, feel somber and rough around the edges.

The goods: Japanese label A Bathing Ape’s collaborative line with Chocoolate ($50 upwards) is currently in store for Fall/ Winter, alongside the brand’s signature preppy-chic (and slightly eccentric) pieces. For sharp, grungy styles, izzue hardly disappoints. Fingercroxx stands out with crazy colors and prints on sportswear-inspired looks, while 5cm’s goth-y vibe and slim silhouettes should do well with dark dressers. Prices range from $29 for a t-shirt to $49 for a skirt. Why you’ll be back: Hong Kong isn’t very far, but finally having Chocoolate right at our doorstep means saving on airfare and more cash to burn on the highly popular label.

The buzz: Moda Pacifica, the company who brought Brazilian flip-flops Havaianas to Singapore, expands its portfolio to include more casual-chic labels—all of which are housed in its first multi-label concept store at ION Orchard. The vibe: Splashy, fun and madly colorful, like a fashion-focused candy store. As if the kaleidoscope of rainbow hues from the products isn’t enough, edgy geometric patterns and more bright colors add to the happy, carefree atmosphere, for a weekend feel. The goods: Havaianas’ standalone store at the mall has shuttered, but the

summery, sand-appropriate footwear ($32.90 upwards) are now consolidated in the new boutique, alongside French names like lifestyle label Bensimon ($59.90 upwards), and all-terrain shoe specialist Praiaz ($69.90 upwards). The store also carries its own in-house collections, including ballet flats from Allegrina ($69.90 upwards), basics from Thread 365 ($29.90), and retroinspired hip shades from Hoola ($64.90 upwards). Why you’ll be back: Because everyone needs some trusty flip-flops, sensible kicks for the weekend, cheapand-chic sunnies and well-made basics.

Battlefield 4 Pitch: Battlefield differs from your usual first-person shooters in its ability to give you control of vehicles and jump around from soldier to soldier, giving you the impression of leading an entire campaign at both a strategic and tactical level. This edition of the beloved game, set in the near-future, pits the USA, China and Russia against each other. Who made it: EA Digital Illusions CE (DICE) is published by Electronic Arts. Most anticipated feature: Battlefield 4 will run up to 60 frames per second and it features support for 64-player multiplayer matches on PS4 and Xbox One. Bonus drama: There’s an actual Jason Bourne-style plot in the single player campaign by Jesse Stern, who has writing credits on scores of US TV series like NCIS (about the Naval Criminal Investigative Service). His series have a tendency to never make it past the first season, though. Just sayin’. Perfect for: Those who dodged their military service and are having second thoughts.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Pitch: This is the first-person shooter of choice. And while most kids on the multiplayer maps won’t care about the plot, here goes: The game is set

Release Date: Unfortunately it won’t be available in Singapore until late 2014(!) but you should be able to find units on eBay.

Who made it: Infinity Ward, Neversoft and Raven Software. Most anticipated feature: “Dynamic Maps” introduce midgame events that can flatten entire portions of a map, while players can strategically destroy parts of the map to open or block passageways. Bonus drama: Tony-Award nominated Stephen Lang (Col. Miles Quaritch from Avatar) is the voice of Elias Walker and the game’s script is written by Stephen Gaghan (Traffic and Syrianna). Perfect for: Your typical gamer who needs a little more violence in his life.

Dead Rising 3 Pitch: Following the well-received previous installments, Dead Rising 3 takes place 10 years after the events at Fortune City. The protagonist, a young mechanic named Nick Ramos, attempts to survive a massive zombie outbreak. To do so, Nick has a tendency to build madcap contraptions that cause massive mayhem. Who made it: Capcom Vancouver and Microsoft Most anticipated feature: Players now have the ability to create weapons and vehicles on the go. Rollerhawg, anyone? It’s the combination of a chopper and a steamroller. Bonus drama: This is a Capcom game and its many references to Hollywood zombie flicks have trickled through Japanese arcade game culture, making it a pretty brain-dead experience. But

hey, you’re here to kill zombies, not watch Oscar-winning performances. Perfect for: Walking Dead fans who would like to experience the thrill of crushing hordes of zombies.

NBA Live 14 Pitch: The 14th edition of the NBA’s only official basketball simulator. Who made it: EA Sports. Most anticipated feature: BounceTek; a new dribbling physics-based system that allows the players to have more control over the ball and better responsiveness. Bonus drama: Six of the league’s youngest point guards lend their faces and physiques to the game: Kyrie Irving (NBA All Star 2013), alongside Damian Lillard, John Wall, Kemba Walker, Ricky Rubio and Victor Oladipo.

New Features: • Blu-ray player, 500GB harddrive and 8GB memory. • Multi-tasking with music, video, Skype and Internet Explorer. • Improved cloud computing and on-demand streaming of games onto your consoles. • Improved Kinect functionality: a 1080p wide-angle camera that captures your movements and gestures, allowing you to control the on-screen action. • Kinect microphone that remains active at all times, and can be woken with a voice command when in sleep mode. • The new wireless Xbox One controller features new vibration motors in the triggers. • Expanded TV and entertainment options.

Perfect for: Those too short to make the high-school team.

Need for Speed Rivals Pitch: Your usual Need for Speed format: cops chase you, you shake them off your tail, you challenge rival racers, your reputation grows. This time around, you can also play as the cops, though. Who made it: Ghost Games and Criterion Games. Most anticipated feature: AllDrive is a new online feature that allows players to seamlessly transition between single player, co-op, to multiplayer mode. Bonus drama: Ken Block is the series’ appointed racing advisor. He’s this mad Gymkhana driver who can pull some awesome driving stunts. Perfect for: Guys who crash their car trying to pull these stunts in the real world. n

REVIEW Samsung Note 3

TECH THE GOOD:

THE BAD:

+ The S Pen stylus works perfectly, allowing you to make beautiful sketches anywhere. The handwriting recognition also works wonders, although it’s a bit of a gimmick, as typing remains faster and more convenient.

- Do you normally sketch a lot? If not,

+ Android offers the best integration with Google: contacts, calendars and documents all work seamlessly.

+ The sharp 1920 x 1080 screen is so big you can even do things previously reserved for tablets or desktops, such as working on a spreadsheet. Of course, it looks great when you show pictures and movies on it, too.

Phablets, which sit somewhere between a smartphone and tablet, are a pretty niche category. The Samsung Note 3 does fit in your jeans pocket, but not comfortably or discreetly. The tradeoff is a massive 5.7” screen, which makes browsing the web and viewing movies an experience that puts iPhones’ 4” screens to shame. The Note 3 is promising more than display real estate, though. Its stylus is meant to make it a creative device that allows you to draw, crop and lay out images on the go.

+ This thing is fast. Whether you’re shooting with the very capable 13MP camera or running two applications at once in the split window, everything just whizzes along.

you’re going to use that stylus twice and then forget about it. The handwriting and scrapbooking, too, are really just gimmicks.

- The stylus and screen size are basically the two major differences with the Galaxy S4. And we actually think this screen is too big for comfortable one-hand use. You’re constantly shifting the device in your palm to reach all four corners.

- Of course, the second size issue is portability. This is not going to look good in your jeans, or fit into them at all if they’re skinny.

- The design—fake leather and plastic metallic trim—is tacky and cheap. iOS7 also remains a lot more streamlined than Android. These aren’t deal breakers, but if you’re a design fanatic, the Note 3 just won’t cut it for you.

VERDICT: It’s the best phablet out there: great screen, camera, processing speeds, stylus, battery, etc. But while that massive screen is a joy under some circumstances, it’s just as often unwieldy. Unless you’re dead set on having a stylus, just get the Samsung S4, whose 5” screen is much closer to the ideal smartphone size. $1,048 from Samsung Experience Store, #02‑28/29 Vivocity, 1 Harbourfront Walk, 6376‑9150, www. samsung.com. DINING brunch Bubbling Over

Lucky Eight IKYU might no longer be the only Japanese restaurant in Tiong Bahru (see Bincho, page 28), but they are offering a special winter menu this Christmas (until January 1). Priced at $188, the eight-course menu will feature creations from the season’s best ingredients, including Miyazaki wagyu and Japanese oysters. 5 Yong Siak St., 6223-9003, www.ikyu.com.sg.

Take your brunch up a notch with InterContinental Singapore’s “The Art of Sundays” ($128, unlimited soft drinks). The menu is pretty lavish: think foie gras, Tasmanian oysters, and artisanal cheeses. Opt for free-flow Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label Magnum Champagne and Pink Elephant Rosé ($158) to top it off. InterContinental Singapore, 80 Middle Rd., 63387600, www.intercontinental.com/singapore.

takeaway Cut the Mustard

New takeaway hot dog joint The Mustard Incident features a menu influenced by American, Mexican and Southeast Asian flavors. On offer are signatures like Frankenstein ($10), a beef-and-pork sausage combo wrapped in streaky bacon. Artisanal beer is also available for $12 per bottle. Basement One, TANGS Orchard, 310 Orchard Rd., 6836-3647, www.facebook.com/TheMustardIncident.

drink Through the Grapevine

New online marketplace WineFamily (www.winefamily.com), which boasts a growing collection of labels for every budget (from $19 to $859), isn’t just a webstore. The interactive site allows you to learn more about the wine offered directly from winemakers, and spark interesting debates through the social networking platform Grapevine—perfect for novices who aren’t keen on wine appreciation workshops. See page 27 for founder Paul Gerken’s top affordable bubbly.

OPEN DOOR

Morsi & Sorsi The buzz: Opened by chef Lino Sauro, Morsi & Sorsi is a cheaper and more casual alternative to his fine dining eatery Gattopardo. The vibe: It’s located within the CBD so expect a crowd of execs for both lunch and dinner. With an alfresco dining area out front, and back-toback seats around the U-shaped bar and along one side of the restaurant, the use of space is smart in this seemingly small outlet. Also, it’s an

open-concept kitchen so you can watch chef Lino and his team in action. The food: Creations like beef lasagna ($13), quinoa with fresh vegetable salad ($12), and toasted panini with parma ham, mozzarella, rucola and tomato ($13) pepper the menu and are pretty reasonably priced. If you prefer, opt for a platter to share (the buffalo mozzarella with parma ham, baby spinach and cherry tomatoes ($23) is a great choice), or order a sandwich

to go, like the roasted porchetta with cheese, mustard and grilled capsicum ($11). A small selection of cold and hot tapas (from $5) is also on offer. The drinks: Italian labels make up most of the drink list here, including beer like Peroni ($8), wine by the glass ($8), spirits (from $6), and cocktails, e.g. Bellini and Rossini ($10). Why you’ll be back: If you’re pressed for time, it’s the perfect go-to spot for a quick, tasty meal.

Bincho was an inspired move, lending the place a worn-in, tiled-wall character you couldn’t pay to replicate. The food: It's all about omakase (sets from $50-$80), with Head Chef Asai Masashi turning out small plates (salmon avocado yukke wrap with seaweed; grilled meat and veggies) most of which are cooked over the charcoal grill (bincho is Japanese for the white charcoal they use here).

The first thing visitors see on arrival.** Produced by

The buzz: The latest arrival in Tiong Bahru is a tiny Japanese bar and restaurant occupying the back of the half-century old Hua Bee mee pok store (the one made famous in Eric Khoo's Mee Pok Man). The vibe: Insider-y and undeniably fun. Bringing back the original owners to run the mee pok store

The drinks: The darkened corridor doubles as a bar, serving a selection of sake, whisky and beers from craft brewer Hitachino, as well as cocktails dressed up as “Japeritifs” (Yuzu Be Alright, $23; The Yeast I Could Do, $22). Why you’ll be back: Retaining the balance of old and new is what drew the hipster crowds here, but once the Keppel Land condo across the road goes up (next year), that old world charm might be gone for good. Until then, don’t miss out on the sake cheesecake.

Japanese bartender Tomoyuki Kitazoe’s glass-and-metal booths atop the esplanade are “shapeshifting modular structures” that form the previously mobile bar. The 360 degree views of marina bay and the cbD just sweeten the deal. Drinks-wise, expect creative use of tropical fruits, and the odd exotic ingredient (like wasabi salt); fitting for a bar whose name is short for “organic chemistry”.

It’s a strange location for a bar, but being on top of a Supertree at Gardens by the bay really works. Our number one tip: come here after dark to see the Supertrees lit up in Avatar blues and greens. Plus, on the alfresco rooftop bar—which revolves!— the view is great.

W Hotel’s lounge bar is no wilting wallflower. everything is bathed in purple light and the cocoon seats look like props from the set of Alien. Step in here and you’ll soon forget you’re in familyfriendly, sun-kissed Sentosa—not least with the help of their snazzy cocktails.

Week of December 27 © 2013 Rob Brezsny

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Derrick Brown has a poem entitled “Pussycat Interstellar Naked Hotrod Mofo Ladybug Lustblaster!” I hope that at least once in 2014 you will get up the nerve to call someone you love by that name. Even if you can’t quite bring yourself to utter those actual words, it will be healing for you to get to the point where you feel wild enough to say them. Here’s what I’m driving at, Capricorn: In the coming months, you will be wise to shed any inhibitions that have interfered with you getting all of the free-flowing intimacy you’d love to have. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): “Artists who are content merely to hone their gifts eventually come to little,” says the Belgian writer Simon Leys. “The ones who truly leave their mark have the strength and to explore and exploit their shortcomings.” Even if you’re not an artist, you will be able to achieve an interesting kind of success if you’re willing to make use of the raw materials and untapped potential of your so-called flaws and weaknesses. Whatever is unripe in you will be the key to your creativity. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): In 2014, you will have the mojo to escape a frustration that has drained you and pained you for a long time. I mean you can end its hold on you for good. The coming months will also provide you with the chance to cultivate a labor of love. While this project may not bloom overnight, it will reveal its staying power in dramatic fashion. And you will be able to draw on the staunch faith you’ll need to devote yourself to it until its full blessings ripen. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): “Life is best organized as a series of daring ventures from a secure base,” wrote psychologist John Bowlby. Some of you Aries enjoy the “daring venture”, but neglect the “secure base”. That’s why your daring ventures may on occasion go awry. If you are that type of Ram, the first half of 2014 will be an excellent time to correct your bad habit. Life will be offering you considerable inspiration in building a strong foundation. And if you already appreciate how important it is for your pursuit of excitement to be rooted in well-crafted stability, the coming months will be golden.

Mr. KNOW‑IT‑ALL Our Favorite Smart Aleck Answers Your Questions Dear Mr KIA, I’m someone who needs more than just 24 hours in a day. From lunch meetings and after work drinks, to gym sessions and meet-ups with friends, there’s virtually no time to run my errands. That increasing pile of clothes isn’t going to wash itself and my groceries are running low—there’s no way I’m resorting to fast food. What can I do? – Hustler Dear Hustler, One thing’s for sure—time waits for no man. You can also be sure about Task Amigo (www.taskamigo.com), an online service that connects you to reliable help. If you need to free yourself from the burden of errands, sign up and post your tasks on the listings page where people can place their bids to do it for you. You can post just about any menial task and you’ll find people willing to do it.

I-S MAGAZINE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 27, 2013

Dear Mr KIA, I’m done with enduring the rush hour crowd—not to mention the smell that comes with it. And with the cost of private transport, owning a car is out of the question. Save me from this misery! – Grumps Dear Grumps, Taking the particularly humid weather into consideration, I’m not surprised at the smell. But seriously, if you’re swearing off public transport, you might want to check out Lompang (www.lompang.sg), an app for Apple and Android that connects you to nearby riders on scooters. You can “flag” for a rider to pick you up by sending out a notification, to which they’ll respond if they’re up for it. For now you pay a flat fee of $5 for a trip into the Central Business District.

TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Here’s a tale of three renowned Taurus brainiacs: Immanuel Kant, John Stuart Mill, and Bertrand Russell. They all had IQs over 175 and all made major contributions to philosophy. Yet all three were physically inept. Kant had trouble keeping a sharp point on his writing instrument, the quill, because he was clumsy using a knife. Mill was so undexterous he found it a chore to tie a knot. Russell’s physical prowess was so limited he was incapable of brewing tea. Chances are that you are neither as brilliant nor as uncoordinated as these three men. And yet, like them, there is a disconnect between your mind and body — The coming year will be an excellent time to heal the disconnect and fix the glitch. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20): A horticultural company in the UK is selling TomTato plants to home gardeners. Each bush grows both cherry tomatoes and white potatoes. The magic was accomplished through handcrafted hybridization. I foresee a comparable marvel in your long-term future, Gemini. I’m not sure about the exact form it will take. Maybe you will create a product or situation that allows you to satisfy two different needs simultaneously. It’s possible you will find a way to express two of your talents in a single mode. Or perhaps you will be able to unite two sides of you that have previously been unbonded. Congratulations in advance! CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22): “To destroy is always the first step in any creation,” said the poet E. E. Cummings. Do you buy that idea, Cancerian? I hope so, because the cosmos has scheduled you to instigate some major creative action in 2014. In order to fulfill that potential, you will have to metaphorically smash, burn, and dissolve any old structures that have been standing in the way of the future. You will have to eliminate as many of the “yes, buts” and “I can’ts” and “not nows” as you possibly can.

LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): When did you first fall from grace? Do you remember? It has happened to most of us. We spend time being privileged or cared about or respected, and then, suddenly, we no longer are. We lose our innocence. That’s the bad news, Leo. The good news is that I think the months ahead may be time for you to climb back up to one of those high states of grace that you fell from once upon a time. The omens suggest that even now you’re making yourself ready to rise back up—and sooner than you think, there will be an invitation to do so. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Leonardo da Vinci created the painting St. Jerome in the Wilderness around 1480. It now hangs in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, a museum in Vatican City. For several centuries, though, the treasured work of art was missing. Legend tells us that in the early 19th century, Napoleon’s uncle found the lower half of the painting in a junk shop in Rome. Years later he stumbled upon the top half in another back alley, where it was being used as a wedge in a shoemaker’s bench. I foresee the possibility of a comparable sequence unfolding for you in 2014, Virgo. You just may manage to restore a lost beauty to its proper place of honor, one step at a time. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22): The Italian painter Tintoretto (1518-1594) was a Libra. He worked with such passion that he was nicknamed Il Furioso—The Furious. One of his crowning achievements was his painting Paradise, which is 74 feet long and 30 feet tall — about the size of a tennis court. It adorns a huge wall in the Doge’s Palace, a landmark in Venice. I propose that Tintoretto serve as your role model in 2014. The coming months will be an excellent time for you to work hard at crafting your own version of paradise on earth. You may not be so wildly robust to deserve the title “Il Furioso.” But then again, you might. SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): Between 2002 and 2009, Buddhist monk Endo Mitsunaga spent a thousand days meditating as he did a ceremonial walk around Mount Hiei in Japan. In 2006, English writer Dave Cornthwaite took 90 days to skateboard across the entire length of Australia, a distance of 3,618 miles. The first man’s intentions were spiritual, the second man’s adventurous. The coming months will be prime time for you to contemplate both kinds of journeys. The astrological omens suggest that you will generate good fortune for yourself by seeking out unfamiliar experiences on the open road. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Many farms in California’s Tulare County grow produce for supermarket chains. Here’s the problem: Those big stores only want fruits and vegetable that look perfect. So if there are brown spots on the apples or if the zucchinis grow crooked or if the carrots get too big, they are rejected. As a result, 30 percent of the crops go unharvested. That’s sad because a lot of poor people who live in Tulare don’t have enough to eat. Fortunately, some enterprising food activists have begun to work out arrangements with farmers to collect the wasted produce and distribute it to the hungry folks. I gather there’s a comparable situation in your life: unplucked resources and ignored treasures. In 2014, I hope you take dramatic action to harvest and use them.
