COVER STORY

The best of Singapore by the ultimate insiders—you. By the I-S Team.

W

e at I-S pride ourselves on being opinionated, but once a year we take a break and let our readers do the judging. And judge you did—thousands of you filled out our lengthy ballot and cast your votes on Singapore’s best restaurants, bars, attractions, shops, gyms and lots more. Without further ado, here are the winners…

NIGHTLIFE Best Wine Lounge

Wine Connection Cheese Bar

Tippling Club

Best Bar

Tippling Club Oh, how times have changed. 28 HongKong Street has been vanquished by Tippling Club. This restaurant and bar has gone from strength to strength, with new digs, special experimental dinners and, of course, bartender Kamil Foltan’s classic-with-a-twist creations. 38 Tanjong Pagar Rd., 64752217, www.tipplingclub.com

Best New Bar

Anti:dote No longer are hotel bars synonymous with watereddown swill. Anti:dote leads the revival with creative cocktails that are beautifully presented. The modern space brings back forgotten classics, while also dishing out awesome fusion tapas like black truffle veal cheek bao. 1/F Fairmont Singapore, 80 Bras Basah Rd., 6431-5315, www.antidote-bar.com

I-S MAGAZINE FRIDAY, October 10, 2014

Best Bartender

Best Microbrewery

Brewerkz

Tom Hogan

It’s a double win for Anti:dote with bartender Tom Hogan snatching the bragging rights from the boys at 28 HongKong Street. The American fuses his classic know-how with Asian touches and lots of charm. 1/F Fairmont Singapore, 80 Bras Basah Rd., 6431-5315, www.antidote-bar.com Honorable mention: Peter Chua (28 HongKong Street). The local wonderboy is fresh from his Diageo World Class finals after clinching the sixth spot as one of the world’s best bartenders. Readers love him, too, it seems. 28 HongKong St., 65332001, www.28hks.com

Local pride FTW. As one of the oldest local microbreweries, this three-time winner is the grand-daddy of the small-batch movement, serving signatures like their IPA and the Oatmeal Stout and seasonal brews like the award-winning XIPA. #01-05/06 Riverside Point, 30 Merchant Rd., 64387438, www.brewerkz.com

Best Party Event

Zoukout

This annual party attracts tens of thousands of EDM fans with headliners like this year’s Steve Aoki, Nina Kraviz and Nicky Romero. With multiple stages and tons of food & drink booths, one of Southeast Asia’s largest music festivals keeps partiers going until the wee hours two nights in a row. Tanjong Beach Club The nautical blue and white color scheme imparts chic beach bar vibes at Tanjong Beach’s only restaurant-bar. While things get Tanjong heated at night with Beach Club their DJs spinning popular tunes, the days have a chiller weekend brunch vibe.

Best Club

Zouk

We’re pretty sure Zouk has been topping every club list since its inception and it’s easy to see why. They bring in big names like Avicii and David Guetta, they’re constantly introducing cool club nights at their three establishments: Zouk, Velvet Underground and Phuture. Plus, they’re not closing anymore! 17 Jiak Kim St., 6738-2988, www.zoukclub.com

Zouk

120 Tanjong Beach Walk, 6270-1355, www. tanjongbeachclub.com

Best Rooftop Bar

Ku De Ta

Marina Bay Sands’ swanky rooftop bar has snatched the top spot for three years running. It’s got Asian fusion menu, sunset cocktails, cool DJs and a ridiculous view. 57/F Skypark, Marina Bay Sands, 1 Bayfront Ave., 66887688, www.kudeta.com.sg Honorable mention: 1-Altitude. Taller than Ku De Ta, this triangular rooftop space has a garden-like atmosphere, bottle service and some pretty pumped up music. It gets super packed over the weekends with pretty young things who are dressed to impress. 63/F One Raffles Place, 1 Raffles Place, 6438-0410, www.1-altitude.com

Jaan

Best Restaurant

Jaan

Throwing Les Amis off its two-year winning streak, this French fine dining restaurant is equally as swanky and undoubtedly delicious. It doesn’t hurt that the place capitalizes on the 70th floor bay views and pushes out prettily-plated gastronomic nosh. 70/F Equinox Complex, Swissotel The Stamford, 68373322, www.jaan.com.sg

furniture edged out last year’s winner Chye Seng Huat Hardware, which came in second place. #01-00 22 Martin Rd., 6836-4695, www. commonmancoffeeroasters.com

Best Local Chef

Willin Low (Wild Rocket)

Honorable mention: CUT by Wolfgang Puck. The venerable steakhouse was so close to clinching top position but lost by only three votes. But, really, who could resist marbled steaks oozing meaty juices cooked to perfection? #B1-71 Galleria Level, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, 10 Bayfront Ave., 6688-8517, www.wolfgangpuck.com.

Best New Restaurant

Burnt Ends

The slick grill (read: gourmet barbecue) and bar is well-loved by critics and diners alike because of its accessible high-low interpretations of comfort food. Although the menu changes daily, think along the lines of pulled-pork sandwiches with chipotle aioli and coleslaw, as well as burned leeks in a brown butter sauce. 20 Teck Lim Rd., 6224-3933, www.burntends.com.sg

Best Café

Common Man Coffee Roasters Between their in-house roasted coffee and a food menu that’s far from your average coffee joint fare, it’s no wonder the cool space full of edgily-marbled counters and minimalist wooden

Willin Low

Willin Low has certainly had a good year, between reopening his Mod Sin restaurant Wild Rocket and cementing his status as the champion of fusion Singaporean cuisine. The ultimate comeback kid’s landslide win this year puts fine dining favorite Justin Quek on the backburner for the time being. Can’t argue with your verdict on this one. PS. Cafe has a great mix of atmosphere and good food. That, and all four outlets have slightly different menus, making each experience a little different. The airy spaces with huge floral bouquets add to the brunch-y vibe, but staples like the truffle shoestring fries and eggs benedict never fail us, either. GrabTaxi ran away with this category because—say what you will—it’s made getting in taxi a bit easier. If you don’t know already (hello, where you been?) the app connects passengers to taxis from all taxi operators, increasing the likelihood of you getting a taxi when you really need one. The user-friendly app also auto-detects your location, finds nearby drivers and gives you an estimated fare price. Get it at grabtaxi.com/singapore

We thought it might be Indonesia or Hong Kong. But no. The Land of Smiles clobbered the competition with nearly half the votes. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

Northern-style curried noodles

Lanna Living Thailand’s northern capital Chiang Mai has got an arty vibe, great food and its own distinct culture. Here’s how to soak it all up in 48 hours.

Akha Ama

Mixology

Noon: Time for some delicious northern-style Thai food, famous for its herby flavors and indigenous greens. Head to the arty part of town and the well-known restaurant, Tong Tem Toh (11 Nimmanhaemin Soi 13, +66 53 894-701), a casual home-garden type place with fresh local cuisine. Order up the hors d’oeuvres muang, which includes a mixture of popular northern bites like sai oua (spicy sausage), kaep moo (crispy pork rinds), nam prik ong (chilli paste with minced pork) and nam prik noom (green chilli paste).

Day 1 9am: Morning coffee is a treat in Chiang Mai, which is teeming with a specialty roasting scene. Check out the new branch of coffee pioneers Akha Ama (175/1 Ratchadamnoen Rd., +66 86 915-8600. www. akhaama.com), located within the historical walled city. It’s got full-on industrial décor, and all the beans are sourced sustainably from the Akha village in neighboring Chiang Rai. Get their shakerato, a double shot of expresso shaken with ice in a cocktail shaker. 2pm: Many of Thailand’s creative agencies and architecture firms are moving to Chiang Mai, making the city a real design hub. The focal point of this hub is the gorgeous and sun-drenched Thailand Creative & Design Center (1/1Muang Samut Rd., +66 5 2080500, www.tcdc.or.th). This design hub, a replica of the one in Bangkok, houses a reference library containing over 6,000 art and design publications and other resources. There are also design exhibitions, creative showcases, seminars and workshops held on a regular basis. You can get a day pass and browse for hours. 5pm: Time for a drink. The city is full of pretty little houses converted into bars and cafes by design-savvy entrepreneurs. Kalapela (145/6 Ratchdamnoen Rd., +66 81 634-2245. www.facebook.com/kalapelatea), a shophouse-turned-hotel-and-wine bar, is one of our favorites—full of antiques and art pieces that have been collected from travels all over the world. They have a decent wine and sake list, too. 7pm: Dine with local hipsters and have a nightcap. Mixology (61/6 Arak Rd., Phrasingha, +66 88 2613057) has a rustic ambience, with its bare-brick walls, wooden tables and beautiful bric-a-brac. Cocktails have names like Love Me Love My Dog, Chiang Mai

Thailand Creative & Design Center

Kalapela

Chanee Berry and Lost in the Fruit Garden. To eat, get the fusion-y Chiang Mai Burger, which comes with a Northern-style laab patty made with rice.

Day 2 9am: Get a proper Thai spa treatment at Rarinjinda Wellness and Spa (14 Charoenraj Rd., Wat Kate, +66 53 247-000. www.rarinjinda.com), a luxe hotel and wellness destination with onsen facilities, Thai massages and even Ayurvedic programs, all set in a leafy retreat in the middle of the city.

2pm: Go gallery hopping. The Nimmanhaemin neighborhood is home to a plethora of galleries, making it a popular hangout for arty types. Choice picks include Gallery Seescape (22/1 Nimmanhaemin Rd., +66 86 114-2845, www. facebook.com/galleryseescape) which also houses a gift shop and cafe, and Minimal Gallery (24/2 Nimmanhaemin Rd., +66 84169-3283, www. facebook.com/minimalgallery), which showcases photography, graphic design and new media works. Pick up a few gifts at The Booksmith (11 Nimmanhaemin Rd., +66 91 071-8767, www. smithproject.co.th). This Monocle-esque bookshop stocks a gorgeous specialty magazine section and a variety of gifts and stationery. 7pm: End the trip right with a blowout meal at The Restaurant (Anantara Chiang Mai Resort & Spa, Chang Klan Rd., +66 5 3253-333), located on the premises of the old and character-heavy British consulate house. It’s a riverside location, there’s a teak deck and the whole place just oozes romance. On the menu is a diverse range of cuisine from Indian to Thai to tapas.

Artel Nimman

Essentials Getting there Thai Airways flies several times a day between Singapore and Bangkok, with easy connections onto Chiang Mai. All-in fares start at $368. If you want to extend your layover and hang out in Bangkok for a couple days, you can do that at no additional cost.

Where to stay With 22 rooms and four suites, Makka (18 Soi 8 Phrapokklao Rd., Phra Singh, Muang, +66 53 281636, www.makka.co.th) has walls adorned with paintings of lotus flowers. Its prime location means you can stroll to nearby temples Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang in just 10 minutes. Closer to the artier part of town, there’s Artel Nimman (40 Nimmanhaemin Soi 13, +66 81 594-6233, www.facebook.com/ TheArtelNimman). The 13-room hotel possesses a whimsical charm with art pieces at every turn and circular windows in each room.

Visa Singaporean citizens can enter Thailand without a visa for a period of up to 30 days.

Exchange rate $1 = THB25.50

Watch Out

FITNESS

Wearable tech has become quite a buzz word. Take our quiz to see which wearable device on the market is right for you. By Eimear Elkington Ralph Lauren Polo Tech t-shirt What it is: For serious budding athletes, this t-shirt has sensors sewn into the lining to read your pulse, respiration and energy output and sends you the information through an app so you can make changes to your exercise level and breathing in real time. Where to buy: Available in Singapore later this year, you can pre-order one from Isetan Scotts, Shaw House Level 1 & 2, 350 Orchard Rd., 67350572. www.global.ralphlauren.com.

Jabra Sport Pulse wireless earbuds What it is: Great for cardio bunnies interested in their fat-burn zone, these earbuds combine an in-ear biometric heart rate monitor with Dolby audio (and some motivational voice coaching to spur you along). The Sport Life app helps you schedule your exercise, keep track of your progress, and monitor your heart rate so you can push into maximum calorie-burn zone. Best of all, the earbuds are wireless. Where to buy: $298 from Cathay at Marina Square, #02-215/216 6 Raffles Boulevard. 63396166. www.jabra.sg.

YES YES

NO Sony Smart Band

Do you feel oppressed by wearing a device on your wrist?

What it is: Designed for 24/7 wear, the band works with the Lifelog Android app to track your days. As you go about your day, it records things like calories burned, photos taken and how much time you’ve spent on Facebook. The new Smart Band Talk also comes with a built-in mic and speaker for calls and voice commands. Where to buy: $228 from Sony Centre, #03-71/72 Sim Lim Square, 1 Rochor Canal Rd., 6339-1198. www. sonymobile.com/sg.

NO Yeah, but do you secretly think you’re the next Usain Bolt or Jelena Dokic?

YES Fitbit One What it is: An exercise tracker and sleep monitor that clips onto your clothes, FitBit tracks your movements during the day— steps taken, stairs climbed and NO calories burned. While you sleep, it measures your sleep cycles and provides daily sleep stats, with an alarm built in to wake you up in the morning. Where to buy: $129 from Challenger, #02-34/35 VivoCity, 1 HarbourFront Walk, 6376-6100. www.fitbit. com/sg.

Samsung Gear 2

Jabra Sport Pulse wireless earbuds

Do you love working out more than the average person?

NO Is it because you’re addicted to your smartphone?

YES Do you believe Steve Jobs was the messiah?

YES

NO

What it is: It’s a watch that connects to your Samsung mobile, so you can receive notifications to your wrist, even if your phone is buried in your bag. You can also initiate and receive calls via the watch as well as take pictures on a 2-megapixel camera and listen to music. The 1.63 inch (4.14 cm) display comes in a range of colors, but still seems a little bulky on slender wrists. Where to buy: $398 and is available from Challenger, #02-34/35 VivoCity, 1 HarbourFront Walk 6376-6100. www.samsung.com.

Apple Watch What it is: Apple’s new smartwatch is essentially an iPhone extension that allows you to update your social media profiles, take calls and share images. It will be compatible with the iPhone 5 and 6 models (but anyone with an iPhone 4S or earlier is out of luck). Much like the Samsung Gear 2, the watch itself is bulky to be considered “wearable”. Where to buy: The Apple Watch will launch early 2015 and starts at US$350. www. apple.com/sg.

OPEN door

BEAUTY

Beauty 100 The buzz: Opened by local entrepreneur Julie Zhu, the newly re-launched Beauty 100 Spa does skincare, massage and slimming treatments. And rather than a generic menu, Beauty 100 is all about treating individual conditions. (There are branches in Bugis and Kovan as well.) The vibe: Don’t be fooled by the nail salon-esque downstairs, with its glass facades, rows of shoes lined up by the door and aunties chatting on couches at the reception. Upstairs sports a more professional look with individual treatment rooms, cream colored walls and (slightly clinical) white lighting. The goods: Every treatment begins with a futuristic computerized health assessment using hand-held transmitters

to test the energy throughout your body. Looks like a gimmick, but in our experience, the findings were uncannily accurate. Once the health assessment is complete, the therapist on hand suggests a range of facials and massage techniques to treat your individual concerns. Do note, though, that the majority of the therapists are Chinese-speaking. If you require an Englishlanguage practitioner, be sure to book ahead. Why you’ll be back: The Beauty 100 therapies are not for the faint hearted (we’ve gotten little bruises in the past), but the results are remarkable. If you go to spas for pampering, Beauty 100 may miss the mark, but if you’re interested in a solutions-focused health and skincare assessment then this is the spa for you.

Q&A Pablo Tymoszuk Visiting soft-tissue therapist Pablo Tymoszuk specializes in correcting postural and muscle imbalances caused by bad habits like using your phone too much. We wanted to know if sitting really is the new smoking. Is sitting really that bad for you? Statistics say that the average office worker spends in excess of 80,000 hours (9.13 years) sitting down over their working life. This will not only have negative effects on the musculoskeletal system but also our emotions, leading to stress. With prolonged sitting

the body becomes tired and fatigued, causing some muscles to tighten and others to weaken. So it’s crucial that your workstation is correctly set up. What do you think of the trend for stand-up desks? In regards to working posture, the best posture is the next posture: even if you sit or stand in the perfect posture for more than twenty minutes, it will result in pain simply from the static loading on the muscles. My suggestion is to make sure your seated workstation is assessed and set up correctly and, if your workplace provides a stand-up desk, use it one or two times per day for 60 minutes. Tymoszuk will be at COMO Shambhala Urban Escape (#06-01/02 Delfi Orchard, 402 Orchard Rd., 6304-3552, www. comoshambhala.com) from Oct 22-Nov 5. $215/60 minutes; $320/90 minutes. JAMES MASKELL

COMNAM Broken Rice The buzz: After the success of their pho and banh mi outlet Nam Nam, the guys at Les Amis take a stab at another Vietnamese classic, broken rice. The vibe: Like many other mall offerings, it’s a bright and colorful space with a selforder sheet and cashier. It’s not unlike its sister outlet with a minimalist and contemporary design: pale wooden tables, stools, booth seats and bright yellow lights. The food: Traditional broken rice dishes (there’s a choice of soups

or dry rice bowls) get a shake-up from chef Nam Quoc Nguyen, who does toppings like sautéed lemongrass pork ($9.90) and crispy soft shell crab and squid ($13.90). Each of these comes with a choice of broken rice or kimchi fried rice, as well as pickles and fungus. Brothy rice soup includes topping options like seafood balls with bean sprouts ($9.90) and Grey Featherback fish balls with a soft-boiled egg ($7.90). Pair these with refreshing appetizers like the grilled chicken salad with roasted

peanuts ($5.90) which has a little bit of spice and lots of fresh herbs and citrus. The drinks: A slew of traditional Vietnamese drinks like black and condensed milk coffees ($2.50) that come both hot and iced. They’ve got playful sodas using traditional ingredients like tamarind with peanut and sesame seeds ($3.50). Why you’ll be back: It’s something different from pho and although not “authentic”, it’s tasty, comforting and affordable.

DINING NEW AND NOTED with Letitia Tandean

Néktar

Sweet No More Néktar was hot when craft cocktails and artisanal spirits were only just making an appearance, and their head bartender Raveen Misra also won Singapore's Diageo World Class back in 2011. But sadly Néktar has now closed, and we're mourning the place where we held our very first I-S Xperience event. No word yet on whether they'll reappear elsewhere.

Wok-ing Out After about six months of Shen Tan's Mod Sin venture at Ujong, the former directorturned-hawker-turned-chef is moving on. Although we weren't the biggest fans of Ujong's execution, especially

Bottle

after her slamdunk over at Wok & Barrel, we're sad to see the passionate chef go. As for her future Shen Tan plans, Tan says she'll be focusing on her new role as a Culinary Director at Gastrogig (www.gastrogig. com), a gastronomic collective that specializes in foodie events. Additionally, she'll also teach cooking classes at ToTT (www.tottstore.com). For now, look out for her next pop-up, Aporkalypse IV (a pork-centric extravaganza). Details are still sketchy, but we'll let you know more as they emerge.

Duxton Part Deux Lots of endings, we know, but here’s a nice new beginning. Au Petit Salut's old head chef and manager have opened Rhubarb Le Restaurant (3 Duxton Hill, 8127-5001). Chef Paul Longworth, together with manager Jerome Desfonds, will be pushing plates of modern French food. Not the cheapest option on the Hill with appetizers ranging $16-$32 and mains between $28-$64, but expect a seasonally-rotating menu with lunches starting at $42 for three courses and a dinner degustation at $138.

Cheeky Rascal Gingerberry Limited Edition Cider

Backstory: This 100% real fruit cider is made by a Melbournian husband-and-wife team at boutique cider house Rebello. They use local apples and pears from neighboring farms, while their berries are from the family’s Sunny Ridge farms. Appearance: Similar to some champagne (they use the same fermentation method), but with a slightly darker amber coloration typical for a cider. Smell: Quite heavy floral notes with a slightly sour kick, like vinaigrette or tart white wine. From the nose, it’s definitely not as sweet as other ciders on the market.

Sip: Punchy notes of strawberry, followed by syrupy apples and then some spice from the ginger (though we wished there was more of this). Verdict: Hoppy beer lovers will find this a little syrupy, but if you’re already a hard cider fan, give it a try. Lowdown: 500ml/8% Where to get it: $17 from Owls Brew (146 Mackenzie Rd., 6333-3440, www.owlsbrew.com). Letitia Tandean

Lunch Box Esquina respectively with four options per course), which is pretty decent considering the prices for dinner.

The deal: Jason Atherton’s tapas joint rolls out a set lunch menu with two- and three-course options (at $35 and $45

Highlights: For starters, the crispy baby squid with chili coriander and black ink aioli has all the crunchy goodness with just the right amount of heat. Of the fishcentric mains, the sea bass with chorizo red pepper paella and black olives is particularly addictive. Dessert-wise, the basil sorbet with black pepper meringue stands out with its tart and savory notes.

16 Jiak Chuan Rd., 6222-1616, www.esquina.com.sg. Lunch from 12-2:30pm. Letitia Tandean

SCENESTEALER Teppei Kaneuji Japanese contemporary artist Teppei Kaneuji debuts his solo show in Southeast Asia, with dynamic two and three-dimensional works devoted entirely to Singapore's landscape. Here, the artist tells us more about his collaborative process, the weirdest place in Singapore and the freedom that art provides. Tell us about you collaboration with the Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI) for your latest exhibition. The collaboration with STPI has allowed me to conduct many important experiments pertaining to my practice. I’ve gotten my hands on materials like handmade paper, and valuable resources such as various printing methods. You have a very unique artistic style that

combines manga illustrations and everyday items. Where do you draw inspiration from? I’m interested in the connection between fiction and reality, and the ambiguous line that separates the two. I decided to become an artist because I was very drawn to the stuff that did not belong to any category and did not follow a set of rules or expectations, and art gave me that freedom to pursue ambiguity in the most direct manner. What are the weirdest places in Singapore and why? Haw Par Villa was very interesting. The absurd and imaginary statues made out of colorful

concrete gave so much weight and body to the space. And thanks to repeated restoration efforts, the place seems to have maintained its vibrant atmosphere and unique sense of liveliness.

Teppei Kaneuji

How has your artwork shaped you as a person? Creating work and living as an artist has definitely helped me accept and confront any sort of unknowns, especially in my own life.

Endless, Nameless (Constructions) by Tepperi Kaneuji is showing till Oct 18 at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute, 41 Robertson Quay, 6336-3663, www.stpi.com.sg. Free Rebecca Wong

SCENESTEALER Joe Labero The Swedish illusionist has had a pretty illustrious career so far, having sold out arenas around the world and being crowned Illusionist of the Decade at the Magic World Cup in Beijing. Returning to Singapore after the success of “Incanto”, Labero tells us about his craziest feat, die-hard fans and how he keeps audiences coming back for more. What challenges did you encounter when you first started performing? I had initially complicated every aspect of magic, wanting to do everything. I learned over time to find what works best for me, developing my form and technique. I learned to keep it simple, and master that. How do you connect with audiences and keep them engaged? It is important for me to get them involved with the show. I get them involved by asking them their names as the show progresses and it incorporates an element of interaction and intimacy with the audience— each one is unique.

Tell us some of the strangest fan encounters you’ve had. I wouldn't call them strange, as I am grateful for the appreciation. For example I have a very nice and likeable Swedish fan who has come to watch my shows at least 70 times! What’s the most difficult feat you’ve accomplished so far? It was definitely the feat I did when performing in Tunisia, where I caught a speeding bullet at close proximity with my hands. So, is it really magic or is it a trick of the eye? Are you ready to believe?

freewill astrology

LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22): “I am naughtiest of all,” wrote poet Emily Dickinson in a playful letter to Maggie Maher, dated October 1882. In accordance with the astrological omens, I authorize you to let that same declaration fly frequently from your own lips in the coming week. Feel free to invoke other variations on the theme of naughtiness, as well: “I am exploring the frontiers of naughtiness,” for example, or “You need to be naughtier” (said to a person you’d like to get naughty with), or “Being naughty is my current spiritual practice.”

SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): “There’s a way not to be broken that takes brokenness to find it,” writes Naomi Shihab Nye in her poem “Cinco de Mayo.” I suspect this describes your situation right now. The bad news is that you are feeling a bit broken. The good news is that this is a special kind of brokenness—a brokenness that contains a valuable secret you have never been ready to learn before now. Allow yourself to feel the full intensity of the brokenness, and you will discover a way to never be broken like this again. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): In a competitive game show on Japanese TV, 13 people had slabs of meat tied to their foreheads. They then poked their heads up from below, through holes in the floor of an elevated platform, where a hungry lizard was stalking around. But not one of the contestants stuck around when the lizard came to nibble the meat; they all ducked down out of their holes and fled to safety. That was probably wise, although it meant that the prize went unclaimed. Now I’m wondering, Sagittarius, about what might happen if a similar event were staged in your neighborhood. I suspect there’s a chance you would will yourself to stand calmly as the lizard feasted on the meat just inches from your eyes. As much as I admire that kind of poised courage, I want you to know that there are better ways to express it. Be on the lookout for noble challenges with goals that are truly worthy of you. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Director Michael Bay makes big, loud, fast, melodramatic action films, including Armageddon, Pearl Harbor and the four Transformers movies. The critics hate him, but he’s unfazed. “I make movies for teenage boys,” he says. “Oh, dear, what a crime,” he adds sarcastically. I love that stance. He knows what he’s good at, and makes no apologies for doing it. I recommend that you cop some of that attitude right now. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): While walking in San Francisco, I passed the Pacific Heights Health Club. The sign out front said, “Birthday suits tailored here.” It was a witty reference to the idea that working out at a gym helps people get their naked bodies in good shape. I’d like to interpret the sign’s message in a different way, and apply it to you. The time is right for you to get back in touch with your raw, original self, and give it the care and the fuel and the treats it has been missing. Who did you start out to be? What does your soul’s blueprint say about who you must become? Home in on your source code and boost its signal.

I-S MAGAZINE FRIDAY, October 10, 2014

Week of Oct 10 © 2014 Rob Brezsny

PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Horror novelist Stephen King has sold more than 350 million books. But when he was young and destitute, still honing his craft, his self-confidence was low. His breakthrough work was Carrie, about a teenage girl who develops telekinetic powers. But when he was first writing that manuscript on his old manual typewriter, he got so discouraged that he threw his first draft in the trashcan. Luckily for him, his wife retrieved it and convinced him to keep plugging away. Eventually he finished, and later sold the paperback rights for $400,000. I hope you have an ally who will go digging in your garbage to fish out the good stuff you unwisely discard. Or maybe this horoscope will convince you not to scrap it in the first place. ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Situation #1: If you meet resistance or doubt, say this: “Ha! This diversion can’t slow me down, because I am in possession of an invisible magical sword!” And then brandish a few charismatic swipes of your sword to prove that you mean business. Situation #2: If angst and worry are preventing your allies from synchronizing their assets with yours, say

this: “Begone, dread! For with the power of my wicked crazy songs, I am the destroyer of fear.” And then sing your wicked crazy songs. Situation #3: If you’re finding it hard to discern the difference between useless, ugly monsters and useful, beautiful monsters, say this: “I am a useful, beautiful monster!” Your kind will flock to your side. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): In her poem “Advice to Myself,” Louise Erdrich speaks of the human heart as “that place you don’t even think of cleaning out. That closet stuffed with savage mementos.” I invite you to use her observations as a prod. Now is an excellent time to purge the savage mementos from your heart, and clean the whole place up as best as you can. You don’t have to get all OCD about it. There’s no need to scour and scrub until everything’s spotless. Even a half-hearted effort will set in motion promising transformations in your love life. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 20): I hope you will learn more in the next eight months than you have ever before learned in a comparable period. I hope you will make a list of all the subjects you would love to study and all the skills you would love to master, and then devise a plan to gather the educational experiences with which you will reinvent yourself. I hope you will turn your curiosity on full-blast and go in quest of revelations and insights and epiphanies, smashing through the limits of your understanding as you explore the frontiers of sweet knowledge. CANCER (Jun 21-Jul 22): Three times a week, I take a hike along a rough path through an oak forest. I say it’s rough because it’s strewn with loose rocks. If I don’t survey the ground as I move, I’m constantly turning my ankles. Or at least that was the case until last week. For two days, with the help of a rake, I cleared many of those bothersome obstacles off the trail. It took several hours, but now the way is smoother. My eyes are free to enjoy the sights that aren’t so close to the ground. I recommend that you do similar work. Stop tolerating inconveniences and irritations that hobble you. Get your foundations in shape to serve you better. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): American author Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was ahead of his time. He created the genre of the detective story and mastered the art of Gothic horror tales. According to the Internet Movie Database, 240 films have referenced themes from his work. British writer Aldous Huxley wasn’t a fan of Poe, though. He said Poe was “too poetical—the equivalent of wearing a diamond ring on every finger.” Judging from the astrological omens, I suspect you may be at risk to lapse into a diamond-ring-on-everyfinger phase yourself, Leo. While I am all in favor of you unveiling more of your radiant beauty, I’m hoping you won’t go too far. How about wearing diamond rings on just four of your fingers? VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Republican Jody Hice is running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Georgia’s 10th Congressional District. To bolster his authority, he repeats quotes by revered figures from American history. One of his favorites has been a gem from the sixth U.S. President, John Quincy Adams: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” The only problem is, those words were actually written by country singer Dolly Parton, not by Adams. Don’t get fooled by a comparable case of mistaken identity, Virgo. Be on the alert for unwarranted substitutions and problematic switcheroos. Be a staunch fact-checker. Insist on verification.

LAST WORD Janice Koh It’s certainly no mean feat being Janice Koh. Not only did the stage actress represent the arts community as a Nominated Member of Parliament the last two years, she’s starred in numerous local stage and television productions. Here, Koh opens up to Rebecca Wong about being in the limelight, juggling multiple roles and her love for pop starlets.

Growing up, my family wasn’t very well to do. Going into the arts caused some worry, especially regarding economic prospects. I was fortunate, as my parents trusted that I was happy doing it. My life changed completely after studying drama. My classes were made up of lying on the floor, relaxing and doing warms up, and I went, “My God, who wouldn’t want to do this for the rest of their lives?”. My role in Frozen [see page 26] really scares me. All the characters are so far away from our own reality, and that means getting under their skin. It is a scary process to embody them on stage for three weeks running, especially with such an emotional play. As an actor, you need to be filled with other people’s lives. We can’t only have one point of view, so we always need to tap into other worlds. Reading fiction books really helps with that. I never take my work home. For theater and performance, you need a neutral space. The home is a comfort zone with a lot of distractions, and it is difficult being in someone else’s shoes in that kind   of environment. I juggle many balls at the same time and sometimes they drop. When I was a Nominated Member of Parliament, my day would be filled with meetings with interest groups, followed by filming and play rehearsals in the afternoons. In the evenings, I’ll try to get home in time to be with my kids and prepare for the next day. Yoga keeps me sane. I’ve been doing it for 14 years and it’s a great way to start the day. I do ashtanga, which is a more physical form of hatha yoga, with backbends, handstands and headstands. Being in parliament was scary. If you are not used to being on a soap box and having the public glare upon you, it can be very intimidating. Anything you say in the media may be torn apart, whether by netizens or trolls.

That’s what she said

You have to grow a level of thick-skinned-ness. When you speak up, not everybody will agree with you, but it’s important to find the courage to say what you feel is right, trusting that it resonates with enough people. An issue that’s close to my heart is education. I think we’re at a kind of tipping point now. If we go too far in focusing on test scores, it might backfire on us in 20 years’ time, when we develop people who are book smart but not street smart.

My guilty pleasure is pop music. I’m really a top 40 kind of person. I feel almost apologetic, but I love anything by Katy Perry or Ariana Grande.

I am just barely surviving

I feel that many people think of me as capable, mainly because I’m handling so many things at the same time. The reality is that I am just barely surviving, like a duck or swan that looks really graceful on the surface but is paddling like mad underneath. Singaporean behavior really peeves me. I hate to say it, but it bothers me when I am in a hawker center and people don’t return their trays. It’s the sense of entitlement, I suppose, when they think that someone else is going to do it for them.

My friends make me laugh. As busy as I can be, I always try and squeeze in a semblance of a social life. I am by nature an extrovert, so connecting with others and surrounding myself with great company is definitely a priority.

In my lifetime, I would like to see equality for LGBT people in Singapore. We haven’t made that kind of social shifts the way New York and London have. As a country we are very young, so I also understand that dreams have to come with a certain realistic understanding, because social changes take generations   to occur.

The people who inspire me are those who get out there and make a change on their own. People like social activist Claire Chiang, who is extremely dynamic and continues to speak so insightfully   about Singapore society and the way she brings up her children. I wish I was better at speaking Mandarin. Being bilingual is really powerful. Language provides another view of the world, and you can read a lot more widely and understand culturally why people think the way they do. That part is closed off to me because I never mastered the language. It’s difficult for women in our society. The idea that men should play an equal role in the home is just not happening yet. For them it’s like “Hey, I cooked breakfast!”. I’m like “We do it everyday, but I’m not bragging about it.”
