Like many local news portals, blogs and websites our thoughts have of late been dominated by a truly shocking and unexpected development. A turn of events so dark and twisted it brought many of us together in shared outrage. Some of us chose to go offline for a day in solidarity. Others gathered publicly to express their anger. Together, we vowed never to let our guard down again.

Amidst the talk of false assurances, of bonds that might be forfeit, of swords being dangled perilously over heads, it was the sheer suddenness with which our hopes were shattered that hit us hardest. None of us saw this coming. All of us thought we’d seen enough positive developments of late to stoke happier expectations for the future. And yet in one fell swoop—with one brutal, bloody, tyrannical flourish of the pen— the powers that be have dashed those dreams, leaving us ever-fearful for what comes next, reluctant to trust, devoid of hope. We refer, of course, to the recent “Red Wedding” scene in popular HBO drama Game of Thrones. What—by the old gods and the new, and the balls of George R.R. Martin—WTF kind of madness was this? We haven’t seen so much blood spilled since the early days of E.R. Haven’t been so blindsided by a plot development since Carlton rocked out to Tom Jones on the Fresh Prince. We won’t spoil it for those of you who haven’t seen it yet—but if you really want to know what happens you can, of course, just go look it up on the internet. They’re talking about it right now on all the blogs and all the websites—all those platforms of free speech and spirited dissent; places where everyone is at liberty to express what they want without fear of reprisal or suppression or a volley of arrows from a Frey bannerman. Go read about it now! For truly, the night is dark and full of terrors.

The Media Development Authority (MDA) of Singapore recently—and suddenly— announced tighter regulation of local news websites in a bid to align standards with established traditional news platforms. Identified sites such as Yahoo! Singapore and Stomp will be subjected to a performance bond of $50,000 and will have to comply with any take-down notice from authorities within 24 hours. The move has been met with a fierce backlash from the online community such as political commentators and opposition parties. Blogging movement #FreeMyInternet recently staged an online blackout protest for 24 hours and an offline rally at Hong Lim Park. The new ruling has also been feedstuff for online satire such as “Simisai Also License”, a Tumblr blog dedicated to churning a list of absurd activities in Singapore that might require a license.

Singapore Valley
Startup 101 Recommended resources for getting you started.
Codeacademy.com Don’t have any programming knowledge? Get some from this really intuitive (and free) online school.
The seven secrets of successful local startups, and the tools you need to get your foot in the door. By Hidayah Salamat
I
t's no secret that Singapore has, in the last couple of years, become something of an Asian hub for startups, thanks to a combination of a tech-savvy population, comparatively easy access to funding and a quality of life (and yes, favorable tax rates) that attracts overseas talent and investors. The Action Community for Entrepreneurship (ACE) recently called for a major review of its initiatives and barely a week goes by now without the announcement of another big buy-out of some young upstart (you can read all about this year's acquisitions at local tech and innovation blog e27.co). But what's really going on behind the million-dollar headlines? What do the successful startups have in common? Is it hype and hot air or hard work and honest labor? And what can you learn from them if you're thinking of starting up yourself? (Aside from the need to kit your office out with ping pong tables.) We spoke to more than a dozen of the biggest names in the scene to find out.
1. Be great at more than one thing. If you’re a multi-instrumentalist who writes songs for a living, you might be an amazing musician. And if you clock in more than 48 hours of coding a week across languages, you might be an amazing hacker. But if the goal is to found a startup, be prepared to be a jack of all trades. Advice from Derek Tan, co-founder of the fastexpanding indie film streaming platform Viddsee (viddsee.com): “Don’t limit yourself to just being an artist or a programmer. I’m trained as an engineer, but I make films.” That said, it doesn’t matter what kind of million-dollar idea you have—having some programming knowledge is key. “I didn’t start off as a programmer; I was from business school,” says Bryan Lee, co-founder of Intraix (a nifty home energy management system; intraix.com). “I learnt iOS programming from my team because it’s important to have some basic programming skills so that if it comes down to it, you can create your own product easily. Outsourcing creates a lot of problems. It’s OK to know less, as long as you know some.”
What is a startup? A young company that aims to bring something of massive value to the market in a disruptive manner, using limited resources, typically with a strong tech element.
Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh Required reading at the RedMart office, it really demonstrates the importance of delivering a ‘wow’ experience to your customers.
Outgrow.me This is the first online marketplace for inventions that have been successfully funded via Kickstarter or Indiegogo—a great way to check if someone’s already monetized your “great idea”.
2. Three’s a company.
Carousell
Many of the companies we spoke to at the recent startup open house event Walkabout SG (walkaboutsg.wordpress.com), described their first few months of work as being an excruciatingly painful experience. Intraix’s Lee even went so far as to say he wouldn’t want to do it again. “It’s a very tough process. You need to find a good partner. Two minds working together is fine, but three’s better because then you always have someone there to break up an argument or keep a discussion on track,” he says. It seems this formula works across the board—some of the most talkedabout startups in Singapore today, including mobile marketplace Carousell (thecarousell. com), online grocer RedMart (redmart.com) and TaskAmigo (taskamigo.com), a Singaporebased task and errand platform, are run in threes.
The Social Network The blockbuster starring Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake offers entertaining insight into the makings of a billion dollar startup, which in this case is Facebook.
Carousell Co-founder Marcus Tan is an Instagram suggested user (@curiousmarcus), with over 50,000 followers.
Thelist.sg Run by SGEntrepreneurs writer Kristine Lauria (krissymo.com), this is an immensely useful online calendar of events in Singapore, mostly free and tech startup related.
A 26-year-old coder eats and sleeps in the Intraix office for free. In return, he shares his programming knowledge with them during their weekly “hack-and-tell” sessions.

3. Disrupt the status quo. A good idea—or several—can sustain a business. But Singapore’s game changers have rather different aspirations. DropMySite (dropmysite.com) founder John Fearon—whose company is one of the biggest local startup success stories—defines startups as businesses that are trying to change the status quo, and are prepared to move fast and break things (a line also popular with Mark Zuckerberg). His cloud backup solution for email and websites recently won funding of up to $250,000 from prominent global seed accelerator 500 Startups, and is targeting a valuation between $10-50 million, a number you'd associate with Silicon Valley, not Singapore.
4. Keep it simple. LOCALS & REGIONALs live
That said, starting a revolution doesn’t need to be complicated. “Many people here are just going for the cool, sexy stuff like loyalty programs, coupons and special boxes—you know, premium style—instead of addressing the basic needs,” says Vinnie Lauria, founding partner of Singapore-based seed fund Golden Gate Ventures (goldengate.vc). “Basic services may not be attractive to get into, but for an investor, that’s the sexy stuff. I would love to invest in something that’s just straight up e-commerce; selling a product with a stated price to an end user. Every startup I see now spend too much time in fluffy stuff like flash sales. Stop it—just stick to the basics.”

5. Have fun, don’t stress. Clearly, tough times are inevitable when you’re an entrepreneur, so it's important to avoid burning out or worse, giving up. Several Singapore startups have got this down pat. “When things get crazy, we try to remind people why they’re in a startup—to enjoy bigger and more immediate gratification for hard work—and to have fun,” says RedMart's CEO Roger Egan. “We also bought a Nespresso machine to celebrate our 1,000th customer, maintain a well-stocked pantry and throw monthly pizza parties.” The team at online beauty store Luxola (luxola.com) also goes the extra mile to have fun. According to their regional marketing director Camille Schu, the team goes on a treasure hunt slash pub crawl during Christmas time, and is moving into a big industrial space in June that will have all the works: couches in the lounge, makeup counters, ping pong tables and yoga mats. One of RedMart's investors Toivo Annus, has his own Skype emoticon.
I-S ASKS: Does the local startup scene live up to all the hype? "The pieces are in place but the community needs to think bigger and better.” Jonathan Briggs, academic director of Hyper Island Singapore (hyperisland.com)
“Things are definitely changing here. More people are seeking work at startups instead of the other way round and successful international companies have begun to build their presence in Singapore.” Amanda Eng, marketing director of online retailer Zalora Singapore (zalora.sg)
Renting on a budget? The city's co-working spaces are a hubbub of activity and networking. Read our story about them at is.gd/singaporecoworkingspaces.
"You can’t compare it to the Bay Area yet, but we can definitely expect some real success cases. What we’re missing is a real shooting star, like a company with an almost S$1 billion valuation.”
"The startup scene has improved dramatically over the past three year. The market here is limited though, and I miss visionaries. Where are the local Elon Musk, Larry Page, Peter Thiel and Jeff Bezos?

"I do think it’s a little over hyped, but if you compare it to where it was two years ago, it's definitely progressed and is getting more exciting.” Grace Clapham, co-founder of Secret {W} Business (secretwbusiness.com)
"Well, nothing’s severely lacking, but it’d be great to have more technically-inclined folks passionate about building great products. The hacker culture here has room to grow.” Marcus Tan, co-founder of Carousell
founder of Flocations
"I think most Singaporebased startups are in a world of trouble. The market is far too small, and there are far too few seed or Series A investors who’d take the risk on them.” Daniel Goh, founder of The Good Beer Company (thebeerhawker.tumblr. com) and the Young Upstarts blog (youngupstarts.com)
“Singapore truly is an incredible place to start up—the amount of funding and support is mind-boggling. The processes can be improved, yes, but don’t worry—soon there’ll be apps for all that.” Chrissy Lim, co-founder of Paperplane Pilots (paperplaneco.com)

6. Eat humble pie. Hugh Mason, CEO of one of Southeast Asia’s most successful seed accelerator programs JFDI.Asia, quotes emotional maturity and the willingness to put ego aside as key characteristics of a successful startup. He identifies “winners” not by their idea, but by how “coachable” they are. “We all have to take a few of life’s knocks to learn the lessons, me included!” he says. Vinnie Lauria reiterates this by saying that startups need to “not be full of themselves”. Humility is hard to measure, but many of the startups we spoke to, like Carousell and travel aggregator Flocations (flocations.com), used the term “flat hierarchy” in a matter of fact manner, insisting that everyone gets to express their ideas, which will all get a chance at execution. Roger Egan attributes much of Redmart’s success—they recently hit $3 million in annual revenue—to never thinking you know it all. “I’ve learnt that I have a lot I still don’t know in terms of being a CEO and that my team members are often the best source of learning,” he said.
One of the Flocations team is so obsessed with sous vide eggs that they eat them for breakfast in the office.
JFDI.Asia
7. Just get it done. “Your idea may be brilliant, but it’s probably not as unique as you think. 10 other people may have already thought of your idea. The key to success is execution,” says Jamie Wang, the director of P2P car rental platform iCarsClub (icarsclub. com). Every other Singapore startup we spoke to agrees. Said Viddsee’s Tan, “Startup success is 5% idea and 95% execution.” And again, it doesn’t need to be too complicated. Lauria is surprised that so many people come to him with only an idea: “Entrepreneurs need to have built some form of prototype before expecting to pitch. It just needs to address the point they’re going after and can even be put together by some third-party service. It doesn’t even need to look nice." n

Hung Up Newly-renovated Indian resto Rang Mahal (3/F Pan Pacific Singapore, 7 Raffles Blvd., 633312788, www.rangmahal.com.sg) is a few steps up from its former stuffier self. Its main dining halls are now bathed in hues of cream, gold and burgundy, further enhanced with silk-textured walls, which illuminate light from the outside. They’ve also created an alfresco cocktail area where you can enjoy some drinks and snack on bar food; but the main event is still the food, which is glorious. Their king tandoori lobster ($65) is cooked over glowing embers of smoked cinnamon, while the sensational tava scallops ($42) are delicately drizzled with green chilli and coconut sauce. But if you want to sample a variety of dishes, go for the gourmet lunch buffet (available from noon-2:30pm, Sun-Fri), a steal at $55++, with no less than 40 dishes (including appetizers, mains and desserts) up for grabs.
Seems like every tech giant wants a piece of the Android tablet cake. The latest to enter the market is computer specialist HP, with the launch of its first Android-powered device: the HP Slate 7. Besides delivering the usual Google experience, the 7-inch, entry-level tablet is embedded with Beats Audio, front and back cameras and boasts an ARM Dual Core Cortex-A9 1.6GHz processor for speed. Another bonus: it’s affordably priced at $249. Available at all major retailers and the HP Online Store (www. hpshopping.com.sg).

But through the glass door is an understated and intimate space with a

The goods: Don’t miss the three founders’ pride and glory—carryalls from Cumulus ($200 onwards), bespoke shoes from Ed Et Al ($2,500 upwards) and bespoke threads from K by Kevin Seah ($150 upwards). There’s also preppy shirts from local label Crawford & Sons ($149 onwards), leather bracelets from Carrie K ($99 upwards), bags from Jack Spade ($350 upwards) and cool glasses from
Masunaga Eyewear ($460 upwards). Why you’ll be back: For one, there aren’t many stores here that cater primarily to dressing up the well-heeled man and this swanky store has everything for an expansive wardrobe. et’s face it: the only waves that pack a punch here are of the heat variety. But with world class breaks a short flight away in Bali, surely some of us are surfing? Since International Surfing Day (Jun 21) is just around the corner, we decided to ask the President of the Surfing Association of Singapore (is.gd/surfingsghomepage), Nazir Salleh, about the state of the scene here. How’s the popularity of the sport these days? We have seen a steady trend of young local Singaporeans and expats taking our surfing classes [and] can see that the sport will grow in years to come. We think that part of the interest has to do with the opening of Wavehouse Sentosa (see wavehousentosa. com for updates on future classes). That’s really a nice place to hang out and enjoy the artificial surf—the best we can have here. What are some of the difficulties you face? Surfing is not a mainstream sport here and this has been our biggest challenge. Having an association in a country where there
is no surfing culture is never going to be easy. There is so much work to be done and funding seems to be our main problem. But we’re trying to start our own Singaporean Surfing league outside Singapore just for our local surfers in spots around the region. What are your thoughts on the future of surfing here? It’s growing, slowly but surely. We now have around 800 members on our Facebook page and that is a good sign. We have more events in the pipeline for locals and expats to come together and create a surfing contest for beginners and experienced surfers. Whether you’re young or old, surfing is a sport for everyone.

Hashida Sushi all round. Entering the space, guests wander down a narrow corridor (with pebble covered floors) leading to the main dining room, where a long chef’s counter awaits. It’s all very zen. The servers dress in kimonos too, adding to the classic atmosphere.
The buzz: The first overseas offshoot of famed Tokyo establishment Hashida Sushi—headed by master sushi chef Tokio Hashida—is helmed by the chef’s son Kenjiro Hashida, a Japanese food personality in his own right who goes by the nickname “Hatch”. The younger Hashida has got some serious culinary chops of his own, having trained at prestigious cooking school L’Ecole Tsuji Tokyo and apprenticed under his father. The vibe: It’s an elegant and minimalist setup, with light wood

The food: Dine on lunch sets (from $80) and dinner courses (from $300) including seasonal nigiri sushi such as sea bream, ark shell and tuna, plus specialties like chawanmushi with fugu shirako (egg custard with blowfish milt), and salmon roe and sea urchin rice. For dessert, the chef also makes exemplary macarons in delicate flavors (think cherry blossom) as well as traditional Japanese sweets. The drinks: There are fine sakes (from $30) and Bordeaux wines, from silky whites like 2005 Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc ($189) to complex reds such as 1996 Chateau Margaux ($2,168), to go along with the meal. Rehearsal is important to learn the geography of the show; some parts are uphill, other parts plateau, and hopefully nothing goes downhill. It’s like learning a dance or training to do a half marathon, once you’ve established the routine it’s merely a matter of following it.

We unlock the secrets behind the successful satire One Man Lord Of The Rings with creator and performer Charles Ross. How long did it take you to master all the different voices required for all the characters in LOTR? It didn’t take years to learn the impressions, though I had to spend a lot of time by myself, trying not to look totally insane (especially with the character of Gollum). In fact, I found the character of Gollum to be the greatest mental block, yet when I “unlocked” his voice, the impression gelled. I’d say, overall, I spent about a month thinking about and trying out the voices.

What do you personally find funny? Many, many things. Everything from John Cleese to George Carlin, David Sidaris to Red Letter Media, Metalocalypse to Bill Bryson and Cute Overload to Fenslerfilms. Laughing is the best thing ever. Which is your favorite character to imitate? I don’t have a single favorite character. I have favorite moments that will hopefully delight the audience. It is surprising how much fun the character of Denethor is to perform–you’ll see what I mean if you come to the show. Chin Hui Wen

Art Seen & Herd!
Mum
Art Beat You don’t have to visit the galleries or museums to see good art anymore, judging by two credible outdoor art showcases taking place now. First up, Night Safari’s Art Seen & Herd! (Through Jul 15), featuring the works of local street artists Michael Ng (Mindflyer), Samantha Lo a.k.a. Sticker Lady (SKL0), Luthfi Mustafah (The Killer Gerbil) and Eman Jeman (ClogTwo). Now that all the controversy surrounding Lo’s “vandalism” works has been laid to rest, it’ll be great to see what she has up her sleeves for the zoo (additional stripes for the tigers perhaps?). Types of artworks announced include graffiti and illustrations based on the theme of awareness of wildlife poaching, so expect to some wild animalistic prints and graphic images on the ground’s entrance plaza. Getting here might still be a pain, but hey at least the works will be interesting. 80 Mandai Lake Rd., 6269-3411, www. nightsafari.com.sg. Free. Also worth trekking for: the Airs & Graces show (Through Jul 7) at Millenia Walk (9 Raffles Blvd.). Nine huge art installations are free to view, including Canadian Max Streicher’s 7m-tall inflatable “Floating Giants”, made from nylon spinnaker and helium balloons suspended from the ceiling that will have you looking high and low, and Indonesian’s Entang Wiharso’s “Feast Table: Undeclared Perceptions”, which is cast in graphite and resin. Other works include those from China’s Chen Wee Ling and India’s Lochan Upadhyay, which are scattered throughout the mall for an immersive experience.
Still on art, we’re looking forward to this year’s Affordable Art Fair (www. affordableartfair.com/singapore) in November. Not only will there be more works to buy with most under $1,000; for further shopping convenience, the curators will be collating all these affordable pieces together on a massive wall to showcase them at just one station. Previously, we had to troll through booth after random booth to source out the good (and cheap) stuff, so good thing that they’ve done the work for us. More details on the developments for the coveted fair in upcoming issues.
Live and Loud Our good friends at Blu Jaz (11 Bali Lane, 6292-3800) are keeping themselves busy lately (with Broadcast HQ closed while they get their licensing sorted, our local indie dance collectives need a new home), with a list of DJ sets and live performances that you probably won’t see anywhere else. More familiar names like Alicia Pan and Michaela Therese aside, acts with funkier names like Bass Rebels and Havana Social Club are set to spin or perform (see respective listings on page 17 and 20 for more information). If nothing else, their gigs will be unpredictable. Ditto our friends at Zouk (17 Jiak Kim St., 6738-2988), who will be holding the first live concert by Icelandic band Mum here on Jul 15 (see Stage, page 17); followed by Korean entertainer Running Man and reggae singer Reggae Skull’s first collaboration concert here on Jul 20. We’re not sure about the latter, which costs between $88-300 for a ticket (plus, K-pop is so over), but expect Mum to mesmerize emo-rock music fans with their ethereal set. Yep, we’ll be there.

Colbar
The Tippling Club
This converted military canteen from the 1950s looks like it’s still stuck in the past, with much of the old structure and décor retained, and—get this—not an AC unit in sight. This paragon of vintage-chic looks innocent enough (the sign on its roof deceptively reads “Milk Bar”) but holds its own against the big boys, stocking a generous array of English beers and ciders (from $11) to go with its tasty local fare.
With a name like that, we couldn’t leave out this Dempsey Hill favorite. It will move out of its current premise in September, so more reason to drop by sooner. The cocktail list here is still killer, we’re happy to report, with must-try classics like the Juniper Sling ($25), named after the Penhaligon’s perfume. Or just go wild and try the Fake Blonde ($21), a classy/trashy concoction of tequila, lime and beer that’s bound to get you into trouble.
9A Whitchurch Rd., Wessex Estate, 6779-4859. Open Tue-Sun 11am-10pm.
8D Dempsey Road, 6475-2217. Open Mon-Fri 6pmlate; Sat noon-3pm, 6pm-late.

Wild Oats @ Punggol Park
Drink till you see stars (literally!) at the outdoor patio of this colonialstyle looker hidden amongst the lush foliage of Rochester Park. Though it’s a bit far away from the city, the chilled out atmosphere here makes the schlep worthwhile. Oh, and the drinks aren’t bad either. If you’ve ever wondered what a Chai High feels like, try the chai-infused gin cocktail ($22) to find out.
Bringing life to a sleepy neighborhood is never an easy task, but we think this cheekilynamed bar-restaurant does the trick. Thanks to celeb chef Willin Low, this outdoorsy joint—think rattan chairs strewn casually across the grassy glade— attracts gourmands from all over the island who make their way here for fusion bites and exotic booze like lychee beer ($11.50). The Great Gatsby • (US) Baz Lurhmann’s retelling of the classic tale of redemption and debauchery is soulless, but a suitably glossy piece of entertainment.
